3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2005-09-29

I guess I expected a lot more famous names like Gilbert Rowland. This stuff ain't bad but a lot more researsh and better stock could of been included. What ever happened to Rita Moreno, you won't find her in this collection either. A purchase that I never should of made ...for the same price I could of got a good Lydia Mendosa CD!

5 out of 5 stars Vivid Colors and Wild Designs.......2005-09-26

I do graphic work for a living. Having a book like this around helps the muse that visits my studio. I don't read the words. This is purely a picture book for me. And with that said - I really like it and use it for my job.

5 out of 5 stars An Important and Thrilling Collection.......2005-09-07

This so much suits my personal tastes, blending my affinity for the style of art, the era, and my love of the cinema. The collection is a visual joy and a great history lesson. Delightful. Fascinating. Thrilling.

5 out of 5 stars the art of "La Epoca de Oro".......2003-01-22

This dual-language book celebrates the wonderful posters that were made during the Golden Age of Mexican film (1936-1956), with depictions of some of its greatest stars, like the gorgeous Maria Felix pictured on the cover.
In the introduction by Charles Ramirez Berg, he states that "The main rationale for the book is preservation; to maintain the memory of movie posters", which were such a unique part of Mexico's superb cinematic history, and also to "acknowledge the artists, who often worked in obscurity".
Tragically, many posters (as well as films) were destroyed in a massive fire at the national film archive, the Cineteca National, in 1982. The 150 posters included in this book came from the Agrasanchez Film Archive in Harlingen, Texas, which houses a vast private collection of approximately 2,000 posters, as well as 1,400 Mexican films, and much more.

Included in this book is an extensive history of this period of Mexican film, a bibliography, and short bios of some of the artists, although a few posters are not credited, and some of the artists that are credited have no biographical material.
The heart of the book is the artwork, which is colorful, humorous, and dramatic. The women are extremely curvaceous (some scantily clad, and on two occasions with nothing at all), and many of the men, like Jorge Negrete in "El Fanfarron", looking dashing and "muy macho".
It is divided into categories: 1: Comedy, 2: Cabaret Girls, 3: Cowboys and Folklore, 4: History and Religion, 5: Drama, and 6: Mystery and Adventure.

My favorite is "Vuelven Los Garcia", by Juanino Renan Berenguer, with horses and riders in silhouette, against a magnificent sky, and two others painted by Juanino's brother Josep, "Cartas Marcadas" with Pedro Infante and Marga Lopez, and Libertad Lamarque in "Soledad"; both show portraiture with a hint of cubism, and are quite remarkable.
Also recommended is the lovely set of 40 postcards, selected from this book, in an attractive, sturdy gift box. the cards are on a matte finish stock, and the plates of this book have a semi-gloss finish. Both will be appreciated by fans of Mexican film, and anyone who enjoys popular art forms.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT VISUAL BOOK.......2002-12-28

This is a great book to look at, especially if you are at all interested in art or el cine mexicano. I bought one for my family in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, and they enjoyed the nostalgia that the old movie posters brought back. The book divides different types of movie posters into different categories from Comedy to Monster-movies. The only thing that would have made this book better was if it had included more posters on Cantinflas and Clavillaso movies. Orale!

4 out of 5 stars Critical historical overview.......2007-03-04

This is an exhaustive study of the film portrayl of Hispanics, beginning with the silent era of the 1929's through the 1990's and the author leaves no stone unturned. He begins with a silent oldie entitled "The Americano" (1916) starring Douglas Fairbanks as the American hero. He is a mining engineer who is called upon by the Latin American president because "Without American capital and engineers, our mines are helpless." Thus setting the stage for the adventures of Fairbanks in the fictional Latin American country that was very similar to the real politics of "gunboat diplomacy." According to the author , " the villains are greasy and trecherous mestizos" and "the film perpetuates the image of the hopeless Latin American who cannot control his excesses of voilence and greed." The author goes on to further state that the "Darwinist scenario, the inevitable is the civilizing, firm hand of the neighbor to the north." These type of theories are everywhere throughout this book. The author has an agenda obviously and is not shy about exposing film used as propaganda. He continues with more Fairbanks movies, most notably his role as Zorro. The author is a Harvard and Oxford educated intellectual with roots in the Lincoln Heights barrio and produces an in depth study of the demeaning Hollywood stereotypes in film. He meticulously examines major and minor Hollywood films and than rips the movie apart for lack of sensitivity to the image portrayed that is usually by a non-Hispanic actor. However , in all fairness , the author does not find fault with all the movies he dissects as some he finds to be positive. Throughout this book Garcia Berumen injects many other opinions about particular films by using national reviews and director and actors quotes.I found the book a little tedious but mangeable in small doses. By picking and choosing which films you would like to read about it makes the reading less of a chore and more enjoyable. There are also interviews with Venezuelan- American actress Silvana Gallarda, who is a star of film , stage and televison and Rosaura Revueltas who was blacklisted in film in the U.S. and Mexico after her role in the politically banned movie "Salt of the Earth." There is also a chapter dedicated to the Chicano/Hispanic Stars of film decade by decade. If you are film buff or interested in the roles and portrayls of Chicano/Hispanics in film, than this book might interest you, although it is a bit scholarly and repetitive in it's presentation. It's depth of perception is it's saving point.

    Book Description

Mexican National Cinema offers an account of the development of Mexican cinema from the intense cultural nationalism of the Mexican Revolution, through the "Golden Age" of the 1940s and the Nuevo Cine of the 1960s, to the renaissance in Mexican cinema in the 1990s.
The book moves from broad historical and theoretical context, particularly theories of nation, emergent discourses of "mexicanidad" and the establishment and development of the Mexican industry, towards readings of key film texts and genres. Individual chapters discuss the relationship between Hollywood cinema and Mexican cinema, the stars of the "Golden Age," the role of foreign auteurs in the founding of Mexican cinema, tensions in the industry in the 1960s, and the national and international reception of contemporary films and film-makers. The author then examines the portrayal of Mexican nationhood through critical analysis of film genres including Revolutionary films, machismo and "mexicanidad," the prostitute, and the work of female auteurs.

    Product Description

Any on-screen schmuck can take down a wolfman with a silver bullet. It takes a certain kind of hero to hoist that wolfman overhead into an airplane spin, follow with a body slam, drop an atomic elbow across his mangy neck, leg-lock him until he howls, and pin his furry back to the mat for a three-count. It takes a Mexican masked wrestler. Add a few half-naked vampire women, Aztec mummies, mad scientists, evil midgets from space, and a goateed Frankenstein monster, and you have just some of the elements of Mexican masked wrestler and monster movies, certainly among the most bizarre, surreal and imaginative films ever produced. This filmography features some of the oddest cinematic showdowns ever concocted—Mexican masked wrestlers battling monsters, evil geniuses and other ne’er-do-wells, be it in caves, cobwebbed castles or in the ring. From the 1950s to the 1970s, these movies were staples of Mexican cinema, combining action, horror, sex, science fiction and comedy into a bizarre amalgam aimed to please the whole family. Chapters examine the roots of the phenomenon, including the hugely popular masked wrestling scene and the classic Universal horror films from which Mexican filmmakers stole without compunction. Subsequent chapters focus on El Santo, Blue Demon, and Mil Mascaras, the three most prominent masked wrestlers; wrestling women; other less prominent masked wrestlers; and the insane mish-mash of monsters pitted against the heroes. Each chapter includes background information and a full filmography, and a wide assortment of striking illustrations-posters, lobby cards and other graphic material, some better than the movies they advertised-accompany the text.

4 out of 5 stars Bobb Cutter Cuts Through The Lucha Crap .......2006-08-25

This book is the bible for fans of masked wrestling films! "Bobb" Cotter's writing style is informal and fun to read yet highly informative. His book is literally crammed with every possible tidbit of information on the wrestlers, directors, producers, actors, and actresses that made the golden age of Mexican psychotronicness possible. He also seems to have a genuine fondness for the personalities behind the cameras; with the possible exception of Doyle Green's for more difficult Mexploitation Cinema, this book is your average fan's only chance to catch a glimpse at what went on behind the scenes at an El Santo film.

Filmography is also an invaluable tool in figuring out what Lucha Libre film's NOT to buy. There are after all over 100 of them! As a fan of the genre who (for the most part) enjoys watching the films, this book has helped me to spend my hard earned pesos on fun films like El Castillo de las Momias de Guanajuato and avoid turkeys like El Aguila Real. Consider this book an investment if you're going to collect some of the films.

If you're only going to buy a single book on the topic, make it this one.

3 out of 5 stars This guy sees them, so you won't have to..........2005-09-20

My first exposure to Mexican wrestling movies came from seeing a still in a magazine that showed a match in which one wrestler had a spider for a hand. Any genre that can go that far is worth exploring, and this book does a great job of providing an overview of Mexican wrestling and monster movies. The author has spent a lot of time studying these films, and it shows in the detail. In addition, the subject matter is treated affectionately, rather than as something to be derided. Unfortunately, actually watching these movies can be a chore. They are a lot like Japanese monster films: the buildup is a lot better than the payoff, the acting is atrocious, and you find yourself marking time until the next wrestling match. That this author was able to watch so many films and write about them so entertainingly is laudable. Whether they'd compel me to watch some again...I'm not so sure. I'm content in knowing that I have the best sourcebook available if I ever engaged in a late night debate on Mexican wrestling movies.

          Book Description

La crisis, a period of political and economic turmoil in Mexico that began in the late 1960s, spawned a new era in Mexican cinema. Known as el Nuevo Cine (the New Cinema), these films presented alienated characters caught in a painful transition period in which old family, gender, and social roles have ceased to function without being replaced by viable new ones. These are the films explored by Charles Ramírez Berg in Cinema of Solitude, the first book-length critical study of Mexican cinema in English. Berg discusses the major films and filmmakers of el Nuevo Cine in depth. He analyzes dozens of commercial movies, from popular comedies and adventures to award-winning films. Introductory chapters address the issue of mexicanidad (Mexican national identity) and outline Mexican history, the history of film as popular culture and as a leading national industry, and the ideological dynamics of Mexican cinema. In thematically arranged chapters, Berg investigates the images of women, men, and social structures portrayed in New Cinema films. He finds that women characters have begun to reject traditional stereotypes for more positive images, while male characters have grown ambiguous and undefined as machismo is abandoned. Other chapters trace the continuing marginalization of Indians in Mexican culture, the changes in male dominance within the family, and the disruptive social and economic effects caused by migration. For everyone interested in Mexican culture as reflected in its major cinematic productions, as well as students of film theory and national cinemas, this book will be important reading.

From its early beginnings in 1896 to its present condition, the historical development of Mexican filmmaking is traced here. From Nicolás Echevarría's Cabeza de Vaca (1991), to the 1992 releases of Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos and Alfonso Arau’s Como agua para chocolate, to Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también (2001), this work provides a close look at Mexican films that received international commercial success and critical acclaim and put Mexico on the cinematic world map. Arranged chronologically, this completely updated and revised edition covers the entire scope of Mexican cinema. The main films and their directors are discussed, together with the political, social and economic context of the times. Appendices offer selected filmographies and useful addresses.

            —Chicago Tribune

"Characters like Wolfman Jack, Reverend Ike, Norman Baker, "Dr." J. R. Brinkley, Pappy O'Daniel and others were master showmen and tremendously successful salesmen. Secret-formula medicines, magic prayer cloths, Crazy Water Crystals, and goat-gland rejuvenations are just part of this often hilarious telling of this outrageous period in broadcast history."

"If you're wondering where Herbalife, Home Shopping Network, No-Money-Down Seminars, and Jim and Tammy Bakker found their inspiration and techniques, look no further than this superb book."

            —Dallas Morning News

Before the Internet brought the world together, there was border radio. These mega-watt "border blaster" stations, set up just across the Mexican border to evade U.S. regulations, beamed programming across the United States and as far away as South America, Japan, and Western Europe.

This book traces the eventful history of border radio from its founding in the 1930s by "goat-gland doctor" J. R. Brinkley to the glory days of Wolfman Jack in the 1960s. Along the way, it shows how border broadcasters pioneered direct sales advertising, helped prove the power of electronic media as a political tool, aided in spreading the popularity of country music, rhythm and blues, and rock, and laid the foundations for today's electronic church. The authors have revised the text to include even more first-hand information and a larger selection of photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful World of Radio.......2007-08-09

Take a trip back to radio's beginning. I've wanted this book for a long time and if you are like me and still get a thrill listening to distant am stations at night this book is for you. This book covers it all with forward by Wolfman Jack. Well worth your time. A great read!

            5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-03-08

Great book if your are 50+. Other wise you won't know what great entertainment the Mexcian border stations really were.

4 out of 5 stars High Powered Hoopla.......2006-07-05

Anyone who thinks that instant virility claims and easy money offers got their start with the Internet should read these tales of super salesmen broadcasting from South of the Border at 200,000 watts. Everything from goat gland "male rejuvenation" to religious salvation was available for a price and with little or no FCC interference.

Add in a few "psychics" and some country & western music and you have a formula that the legal stations in the US couldn't (or wouldn't) match. It was outlaw radio.

Go get this book, friends and neighbors, and keep those cards and letters coming in!

            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic. .......2006-04-14

If you have been or know someone who is in the radio business, this book will be a fascinating read. I couldn't put it down after the first chapter detailed the famous radio quack who surgically placed goat glands into human males for renewed vigor! It goes to show us that the masses will believe anything radio and all the media purports to be true. Preachers-fake doctors, wayward singers and hucksters were the programming content of these stations. The book details the stories of almost all the AM stations that dotted the Mexican-U.S. border with higher power than what stateside stations were allowed to have. This caused great consternation with U.S. broadcasters and the FRC (FCC) at the time. I was lucky enough to experience Wolfman Jack on XERF all the way up in Maryland one late night in the 60's. This book quenched the curiosity I always had about the station(s) and its now famous DJ who details driving over sand dunes to work at the station that he eventually became General Manager of. Read it. You'll laugh for hours.

4 out of 5 stars Humorous history of radio's wildest personnas.......2005-10-01

"Border Radio . . ." was featured on the radio program "Fresh Air with Terri Gross" and the interview with the author piqued my curiousity enough to buy the somewhat hard to find book.
While most of us born later than the 1960's have probably never heard border radio, we nonetheless have at least heard of it thanks to ZZTop's classic "Heard It On The X". By Mexican law, all radio station call letters had to begin with the letter "X", hence the title. These stations were situated just across the U.S. - Mexican border and blasted the North American continent with as much as 500,000 or even a million watts! Perhaps the funniest part of the story is the anecdotes by people not far from the tower in southwest Texas near Del Rio, particularly who reported picking up transmissions off barbed wire fences, fillings in teeth and, in the last portion of the book that feautures the late Wolfman Jack, his recalling of birds flying too close to the towers and frying in mid-flight!
It's a wonderful history of preachers, the forerunners of today's televangelists, quack doctors, some genuine musical genius, including a young Bob Wills before founding the Texas Playboys and, of course, the Wolfman himself.
Claims of these AM radio giants being heard world-wide can truly be considered a direct ancestor to the world wide web, complete with its own spam in the form of wild commercials and hawking some truly bizarre health products, prayer cloths and just about everything under the sun.
"Border Radio . . . " is well researched and written with obvious great admiration for a lost chapter in broadcast history. A fine read.
