A resource for producers new and old.......2000-06-09
How helpful this book is depends on how "green" you are about the film industry. Those with little to no knowledge about film production will find the book resourceful, informative and very "to-the-point" about the different types of financing available. The advantage/disadvantage sections are especially concise--it's always good to see both sides when it comes to deals potentially worth millions. The "further reading" sections at the end of chapter are also handy, if you want to do extra research on your own.
For those who are experienced film producers (or even those who have finished rigorous film producing and/or entertainment business academic programs, such as myself), the information may repeat many things you already know. Many of the strategies in this book I've learned about in producing classes and film financing seminars--and I'm just starting my career. So I'm sure that some seasoned producers may think this book is reinventing the wheel. However, I did think that the sections dealing with the different securities and corporation options were very informative as far as how they impact your tax status, the difference between active and passive investors, how your autonomy as a filmmaker/producer may be affected, etc. It breaks down a lot of tax legalese into layman's terms.
Overall, I recommend the book--as a primer for new producers and students, and as a great reference guide to those with experience.

Since its original publication in 1987, Channels of Discourse has provided the most comprehensive consideration of commercial television, drawing on insights provided by the major strands of contemporary criticism: semiotics, narrative theory, reception theory, genre theory, ideological analysis, psychoanalysis, feminist criticism, and British cultural studies.
The second edition features a new introduction by Robert Allen that includes a discussion of the political economy of commercial television. Two new essays have been addedone an assessment of postmodernism and television, the other an analysis of convergence and divergence among the essaysand the original essays have been substantially revised and updated with an international audience in mind. Sixty-one new television stills illustrate the text.
Each essay lays out the general tenets of its particular approach, discusses television as an object of analysis within that critical framework, and provides extended examples of the types of analysis produced by that critical approach. Case studies range from Rescue 911 and Twin Peaks to soap operas, music videos, game shows, talk shows, and commericals.
Channels of Discourse, Reassembled suggests new ways of understanding relationships among television programs, between viewing pleasure and narrative structure, and between the world in front of the television set and that represented on the screen. The collection also addresses the qualities of popular television that traditional aesthetics and quantitative media research have failed to treat satisfactorily, including its seriality, mass production, and extraordinary popularity.

Excellent Overview of Media Studies Methodologies.......2002-07-04
In a critical writing course I taught in Spring 2002, I used Channels of Discourse, Reassembled as the core text for the course readings. The many chapters within are written by the best of the best in the fields of media studies and cultural studies, and the methodologies are presented in an easy-to-read manner which is informative and full of examples and case studies. This is an excellent book for media studies students, as its chapters lay out the basic information they should know about many of the methodologies often used in media criticism.

Rhetoric and Narrative.......2002-02-24
Chatman's book has been around for a while, but it is still probably the best summary of structuralist narrative theory out there. Chatman makes the very important connection beetween narrative theory and its rhetorical effects on audience. His treatment of the construction of time in narrative summarizes several other prominent narrative theorists, but his terminology is perhaps the most useful. His clear presentation of the distinction between "story" and "discourse" (often called "l'histoire" and "recit" after Genette) and the linking of discourse to rhetorical theory is perhaps the book's most useful feature. Chatman, whose early works included a treatise on poetic meter, is known primarily as a film theorist, but his work analyzes narrative in many media and in many forms. I have used this book as an introduction to narrative theory in my classes.
Useful for analyzing written and film narratives.......2000-10-14
This book offers, for me, the most understandable model of a narrative I've read so far. Chatman offers helpful concepts for analyzing both written and film narratives. He tries to create a synthesis of all narrative theory before his book, and he does a very good job. Instead of getting lost in a collection of different approaches, you actually find yourself connecting them all, seeing where they fit together.
Among all the books on narratology and narrative analysis I've read, this is the one most helpful not only for analyzing film narratives but also written narratives (although I would always recommend you also read "Narratology: An Introduction", "Narrative Fiction" and perhaps Bordwell and Thompson's " Film Art : An Introduction", if you want to focus especially on films).
This book and the way Chatman dissects the narrative are also interesting for people more interested in writing than in analysis: I believe the parts Chatman splits the narrative into resemble very closely those writers use in putting one together. So this book may actually help writers gain new insights into what they are doing instinctively.
First and foremost, however, it is a very useful book for the student and scholar of literature.

The author is a higher regarded teacher of acting and directing actors, but I found the material in this book, and her other book, inaccessable. I'm certain she knows what she is talking about, but I just couldn't get into the material, which seems to be written in a stream of consciousness manner. It lacks the meat I was looking for.

Well, Judith Weston has done it again. This book covers even more ground than her first book. If you're interested in directing - or better yet if you are a director - then for goodness' sake, get this book.
If you wonder why her books get all these glowing reviews, it's because she helps unlock what is THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL in directing: working with actors. Not just on a moment-by-moment basis, but in shaping your film overall as well.
And she does it in practical, concrete ways, with lots of examples. Also, the rehearsal techniques she discusses can be used in a few minutes in between takes while they're setting up lighting.
She also covers script analysis, which sounds more academic and technical than it is. It's what any good director already does on some level, but helps you do it better.
If this book were required reading for every working director, then the movies you see would be a whole lot better.

If you liked DIRECTING ACTORS you will love THE FILM DIRECTOR's INTUITION.
Think of it this way: If DIRECTING ACTORS is like a nice, hot, bubble bath; then THE FILM DIRECTOR's INTUITION is like a luxurious jacuzzi you want to stay in all day and all night, soaking each molecule of your being into each of its pages.
I cried with so many quotes and revelations Judith shares with us in this book.
And, as usual, her words and knowledge and her love for the craft and actors inspired me so much!
A must read for all film lovers. Filmmakers or not!
Best book on directing other than her other one!.......2006-10-18
This book is an extraordinary, essential tutorial and rumination on the philosophy and practice of directing film actors. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it essentially repeats the same thing her previous book (Directing Actors) said, albeit in new ways and with new depth. Read "Directing Actors" first, then I won't have to convince you to buy this one. You will know that every word from Judith Weston is solid gold, and not to be missed. Highly recommended, even if you have already read Directing Actors, as she really does go further and deeper here and presents a number of new insights and techniques that you won't want to miss.
As the subtitle suggests, her focus here is largely on script analysis and rehearsal. Of course that was a lot of her focus in the previous book, too, and she does cover many of the essentials of directing and acting here as well. I do think the book could have been half as long and been better--she tends to take ten words to say what could have been said in four. But what words! If you direct or act in film or television, there is no excuse for not owning this book. Nobody in print can "get you there" better than Judith Weston, and you are sure to gain usable ideas and genuine insights again and again as you read this. I have taught film and video acting for years, and only wish I'd had this book and her other one when I started! If you want fake, affected performances and constant conflict with your actors, no reading necessary. If you're looking for solid ways to work with actors to give life-changing performances, read this. Now.

Great for Reference and Fundamental Overview. .......2006-02-25
I've been mixing and Recording music for 15 years and have done a number of major motion pictures now, but always felt slightly in the dark regarding some of the technical jargon and workflow for Film and TV post production. This book is clear, to the point, easy to read, and a constant source of reference for me as more and more work i do is for Film and TV. As someone who has had a lot of experience in audio, I really appreciate that the delivery of detail is not dummied down, but that it's nor over explained either. This is a great launchpad for people needing to grasp a fundamental overview of the whole process. It should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves a TV or Film or Commecial producer.
Definate key text for students of sound and film.......2005-11-11
This is the book I wanted to write! There are many books out there around this subject, but this text is comprhensive AND comprehensible! It covers every area of the post production process ( and a good deal of giudance for the recording of production sound too) in exactly the amount of detail that is needed, with each technical topic supported by useful and informative technique and advice.
The chapters on editing sound give many valuable pointers that will help anyone who is learniung this craft to develop a strong skills base, with really useful practical tips. There is no important technical information missing; all the standards and formats are addressed and explained in easy to read language, so that you're not left with an incomplete picture, and it's up to date with contemporary systems such as Windows XP and Mac OSX, hard disk recording and digital TV, DVD, diffusion systems for broadcast (surround) and more.
So to sum up, this is a really good read, and worth having as a reference book for anyone studying or working in this field who wants to get a a good understanding of the entire process of audio post, and I would also recommend it to film makers as well, as it is a good read and will inform and enlighten.
I have included it my essential reading list for students on our film and sound design courses.

He then breaks down five major film finance/distribution scenarios, explaining various distribution deals and suggesting ways of negotiating distribution.

Though a little dated (not much has changed in the film industry), The Feature Film Distribution Deal is a must-read for every producer and every newly minted entertainment lawyer.
The author, a practising entertainment lawyer) covers typical/standard/boilerplate film industry deal contracts as issued by the big studios/distributors, and explains practically every line/item in them, and the definitions of the many contract terms.
BTW, ALL the terms of these contracts are rigged to screw independent producers out of net profit participaiton profits.
Then the author offers 'counter' negotiating points and the reasoning/arguments behind them.
He does state that success in using these counterproposals/arguments is limited due to the 'balance of power' between big studios and independent producers is tilted heavily in favour of the big studios.
The appendices are four distribution deal contracts. They're well worth the read, too, if only to familiarise oneself with them.
It is NOT a book to read quickly, but one to be read thoughtfully, to absorb and to learn the legal and business concepts in the contracts. The structure of each chapter makes this easy to do.
Encyclopedia of Bad Film Studio Business Practices.......2001-02-19
If you are mystified by "Hollywood accounting," this legal expose outlines over 80 clauses commonly found in feature film distribution contracts that might be considered unconscionable or immoral, revealing the formidible odds facing the "talent" side of the industry. A thorough explanation of why there's no "net" profit, and a sobering dose of reality for any creative person who believes they should be paid for making a good product. Serious scholarship.......2007-03-13
Walter Everett subjects the music of The Beatles to the kind of theoretical examination usually reserved for classical music. This book, along with its companion volume, is serious-minded, intellectually rigorous, extremely well-conceived and yet, for the informed reader, not at all tedious. I know of no other instance where popular music has been subjected to this kind of analysis with such compelling results.
These volumes seem to implicitly ask whether The Beatles' music is actually good enough to withstand the rigor of intensive analytical scrutiny. As Professor Everett ably demonstrates, it truly is. His dissection of the famous medley on side two of "Abbey Road" (in the companion volume) is eye-poppingly brilliant. In all, both volumes are superb treatises, books that set a new and very high standard for scholarship in popular music. They are also a welcome addition to literature on the band that is still the standard by which all others are measured.
A Fine Review Of The Beatles' Early Music.......2005-07-14
As I indiciated in my review of Everett's companion book, which traces the music of the Beatles from "Revolver" through "The Anthology," these books are the definitive works about the music of the Beatles. There are so many books about the Beatles' cultural iconic significance, their sociological and gender influence and a whole host of other irrelevant topics. What matters most is that the Beatles were timeless musicians who defined the music of the 20th century. Everett reviews their music as he would any great composer. If his perspective is too technical and professorial, you may want to consider Riley's "Tell Me Why," which is still my favorite book about the Beatles' music. It provides succinct and probing insights into their music. Everett's book is nevertheless excellent, and I highly recommend it.
Dense, but wonderful........2002-12-10
Yes, this book is very dense and technical, I am not a musician and was a bit lost at times, however, the author structures the book in such a way that you can skim or skip what is over your head (a lot for me) and still get something out of this book.
For me, one of the most important and rare things about this book is the way the author does not fall into the John vs. Paul biases like so many others who have written on this topic. He gives both men the written ananlysis and technical break down of their work they deserve and does not short change Paul in favor of John. This is appreciated as I believe it gives the best description of how the songwriting evolved through the talents of both men.
He also gives the same critical analysis of George Harrison's songs, this is rare indeed.
For these reasons I highly recommend the book for serious Beatle fans.
I am already burning through the second book.
Excellent Beatle book but..........2002-09-23
First, let me make it clear that I really like this book (and its companion volume.) It's pretty difficult to write anything about the Beatles anymore that hasn't been written about ad nauseum already, but both of these books contain a great deal of fresh and intelligent information and insight on the Beatles's music. That said, I have a feeling that a lot of folks looking for new Beatles literature just aren't going to particularly enjoy The Beatles As Musicians. I'm a musician, but at times as I was reading this material I felt as though I might as well have been reading Latin simply because Mr. Everett is often very technical and rather esoteric in his discussions. In some ways (and Mr. Everett admittedly touches on this issue) these books seem somehow to fly in the face of what makes rock music so great in the first place...emotion, borderline chaos, an underlying sense of danger and rebellion, limited musicianship that somehow leads to innovation, chance, improvisation, etc etc. Still, as I noted, I enjoyed these books a great deal even when I didn't have the slightest idea what the author was writing about. But if you're not a musician or you are one who is largely self-taught and as technically stupid as I am, I wonder how much you'll like The Beatles As Musicians. Regardless, in appreciation of the freshness and intelligence of his work, I have to give Mr. Everett's books both five stars.
Worth Every Penny.......2002-06-26
I like the way this author compliments his readers' intelligence by writing about musical theory with clear detail. He describes how the Beatles achieved some of the sounds they did and gives good, in-depth analyses of many of their songs.
This book is truly a must-have for inveterate Beatles fans; musicians and lay people as well will certainly come away enriched after having read this. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

Video Content Analysis Using Multimodal Information For Movie Content
Extraction, Indexing and Representation is on content-based multimedia analysis, indexing, representation and applications with a focus on feature films. Presented are the state-of-art techniques in video content analysis domain, as well as many novel ideas and algorithms for movie content analysis based on the use of multimodal information.
The authors employ multiple media cues such as audio, visual and face information to bridge the gap between low-level audiovisual features and high-level video semantics. Based on sophisticated audio and visual content processing such as video segmentation and audio classification, the original video is re-represented in the form of a set of semantic video scenes or events, where an event is further classified as a 2-speaker dialog, a multiple-speaker dialog, or a hybrid event. Moreover, desired speakers are simultaneously identified from the video stream based on either a supervised or an adaptive speaker identification scheme. All this information is then integrated together to build the video's ToC (table of content) as well as the index table. Finally, a video abstraction system, which can generate either a scene-based summary or an event-based skim, is presented by exploiting the knowledge of both video semantics and video production rules.
This monograph will be of great interest to research scientists and graduate level students working in the area of content-based multimedia analysis, indexing, representation and applications as well s its related fields.
