5 out of 5 stars Short-cut to Dr. Carl.......2007-01-05

This book is an excellent synopsis of Carl Rogers life's work. Instead of researching several other volumes, this text provides an accurate and complete re-telling of the development of Rogerian Client-Centred Therapy. The authors have captured the essence of Carl Rogers and his voice is evident throughout the text. A worthwhile read for those new to Rogerian Therapy.

5 out of 5 stars My 100-word book review.......2006-05-13

The Carl Rogers Reader is an excellent, thought-provoking collection of articles by Carl Rogers from different stages in his career and covering many subjects linked to the person-centred approach to psychotherapy. I found this book fascinating, enlightening and occasionally surprising; for example, when I realised just how much he was against accreditation for therapists. At all times, the life-affirming nature of the man shines through. If you are preparing to be a therapist and are drawn to the person-centred way, or are simply interested in the life and work of Carl Rogers, you will find this book a treasure trove.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-09-26

always a pleasure to read rogers. this book is a compilation of many wonderful pieces. rogers had a great ability to see beyond the surface and connect with people in a very real, personal, and therapeutic way. in an at times parental sort of way, rogers was able to see through to the heart of a patient and his issues and bring insight and hope. great read for those new to psychological theory/practice AND those who have been doing it for awhile.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any psychotherapist.......2005-06-14

I have been working as a therapist for over 10 years and, to my shame, have only now started to read any of Rogers' work. This selection of his writings strikes me as amazingly modern and relevant to the work of anyone in the 'helping' professions. I have been struck by the almost spiritual quality of his thoughts, and the way in which he cuts through any psychological or psychotherapeutic dogma. I have been truly inspired by this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in human relationships; I believe that anyone would come away with new and profound insights that would challenge, stimulate and reassure. An excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2000-10-31

Excellent book to read for people who are concerned with the approach and values in psychotherapy.

Carl Rogers reviewed many of his heart-felt issues in the subject matter.

The "client-centered" approach in psychotherapy cannot be ignored if we do believe that human being is more than just one class of object in the study of science.

Get one and find it out yourself! Easy reading and extremely insightful!

5 out of 5 stars Songs you love to sing to yourself or with friends.......1999-02-19

This book contains the great old country-western songs, from back when country-western was truly country-western and not just another rock n' roll mutant. These are the songs that are fun to sing, and that you CAN sing, with simple yet fun arrangements for the musically challenged. After only one exposure to this book, I was belting out a fairly good rendition of "Back In The Saddle Again," and a couple of friends even joined in, looking over my shoulder at the pages. The most fun is being able to read all the words that you didn't always catch when you first heard the song. Great for singing around the campfire, piano, or even the dinner table. I hope Readers' Digest decides to bring this one back, because it's a valuable reference and a lot of enjoyment.

Book Description

This volume is the essential collection of readings from the multidisciplinary work of Theodor Adorno, one of the most influential and admired German thinkers of the twentieth century. In order to allow a ready appreciation of a specific area of Adorno's thought, The Adorno Reader organizes the most important of his writings into five sections: the task of philosophy, the concepts of philosophy, sociological writings, culture, and aesthetic criticism. In addition to a general introduction, the editor has provided individual introductions to all of the material in the book. By explicating some of the more obscure terminology and arguments these introductions clearly situate each piece within the larger context of Adorno's writings and his philosophical tradition.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Sure he was a snob..........2006-07-05

It's OK to concede this.

And he was an armchair academic who eschewed every opportunity for real-life praxis.

He was human, fallible, prone to snap judgments on subjects he didn't understand.

And YET...despite his snobbery (why wasn't he frequenting the great jazz clubs of South L.A. if he was so interested in essaying the subject?), and despite his vulnerability to any number of Sloterdijkian critiques...there are enough moments of tough, bristling intelligence to make it all so very worthwhile.

BUT DON'T START HERE. Go straight to the fount; with Adorno context is EVERYTHING. Pick up Aesthetic Theory (Hullot-Kentor translation) and Minima Moralia. Appetite whetted? Try Negative Dialectics next. And then come back here and write your own review. :)

5 out of 5 stars Perennial mirrors.......2003-12-17

Do not be put off by Adorno's so-called "critique" of jazz music.
Adorno's critique, all critiques are embodied in jazz. His use of the essay-form itself shows his desire to put constraints on his art to free himself, from those boundaries he denounces, or boundaries which he feels will co-opt him. Besides, many who call him a "snob" for this are forgetting that jazz improvisation is a transgression of the idiom, which is what Adorno speaks of when he labels it a fashion. He speaks of the idiom, and the lack of possibilities on divers ONTOLOGICAL levels. No matter what he thought, he's still a super-cronopio.

I liked this story because it was happy and sad at times. The story was really detailed and I could make pictures in my head of what it would be like in the late 1800's. I learned a lot about Laura Ingalls Wilder. For instance, Mary was courageous even though she was disabled. I also learned that they moved from Minnisota to South Dakota. I hope you will read this interesting book too!

2 out of 5 stars Really Bad.......2006-06-17

I'm surprised people actually enjoyed this...
I love the "For Beginners" series but this is by far the worst one I have read. The difference between this and, for example, Kierkegaard for Beginners is amazing. It's basically just a lack of real content. I'd still say it's alright as an introduction considering it's not wrong or anything, but honestly I expected much more from a book in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Sartre, presented in a funny and easy way.......2005-12-16

This book is very easy to read. It consists of cartoons and some text. The text presents some of Sartre's ideas in a humorous way. For example:
"We are condemned to be free",
"Hell is other people",
"Nothingness lies coiled in the heart of a being, like a worm", etc.
I wish I had read this book in elementary school.
Buy this book and read it in one breath. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, as it will open your appetite to read more of Sartre.
The book is not written by Sartre himself, but as the saying goes, "it is even better than the real thing".

5 out of 5 stars A Good Start on Sartre.......2002-03-17

I have to agree with the Reader from New York below. _Sartre For Beginners_ from Writers and Readers Publishing was indeed a good place to start, unlike _Introducing Sartre_ from Totem Books.

The writing style was clear and concise, and the illustrations appropriately complemented the material. The book is well structured, with a short Biographical section, a lengthy section on Sartre's Existentialism (focusing primarily on Being and Nothingness), and ending with a short section on Sarte's Marxism. The Glossary was greatly appreciated as was the Sources of Quoted Passages and Bibilography.

While I don't agree with half of what Sartre has to say, Donald Palmer's introductory presentation of Sartre's Philosophy is first rate, and thus I gave it 5-Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Existentially Simple Sartre.......2000-06-13

This book is a joy. I knew nothing about Sartre or Existentialism and found this book very clear and easy to follow. Unlike another Sartre book claiming to be an easily understood introduction, this one contains graphics and cartoons that aren't just caricatures of the people involved (how is knowing what they looked like going to help me follow the facts?). The graphics in this book are simple, funny visual descriptions and explanations of a rather complex subject. Not complex at all since I read this book. It's not a vastly detailed scientific study of Sartre's work. It is what it promises to be: A Beginner's Guide to Sartre. With no knowledge of philosophy, I found it fascinating and easy to follow, and it's whetted my appetite for further reading. There are others in this series, about other philosophers, and I'd recommend them all if you just want a little basic knowledge to enhance your knowledge of the world!

4 out of 5 stars No Place to Begin But Here.......2000-02-19

Sartre for Beginners by Donald Palmer (whom wrote a few of the 'For Beginners' books) gives a fun look at the popularizer of existentialism. Drawing from Sartre's life experiences, biography and influences to show how Sartre came to his theories. An easy read, although one must still contemplate on some level the philosophies that are presented before them. A good beginning book for anyone who wants to learn more about Sarte and existentialism in general. A good addition to the For Beginners book series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest thinkers of the last century...........2005-10-03

Such a title is both purple and cliched and only appropriate to Derrida if heard as a kind of true joke. Derrida is surrounded by his myths as the cartoon character "Pig Pen" is by a cloud of dust. This is the first barrier to reading him since he always appears characterized in advance by his enemies. The next barrier is that he writes "against" those standards of logic and fact that are everywhere taken thoughtlessly for granted: this means his stance is "irrational." Such a perspective is, once again, that of his antagonists or those who are simply ignorant and so think with the herd. Derrida is, in fact, hyper-rational or post-rational: he has thought about and studied the history of thinking to the degree that its problems are clear to him. Most of us live in banal rationality as a goldfish in a bowl: the person is outside is both distorted and by definition, crazy. A third problem is that Derrida wishes to stimulate, not clarify: his mission is not to bring the novice from the first questions of philosophy to its ends nor should we expect this any more than we hope that a president is instructing children on 9-11. Finally, Derrida's conviction in the contingent nature of normal logic means that his form of composition, not just his ideas, is non-normative. He is best read as a philosophical poet with all the word play, punning, and allusion that marks that genre. In short, he is very hard and the selections here are brief and so suffer from the disorientation brought by displacement. Still, if you stay, you will grow.

5 out of 5 stars probes from concepts on high as a bird in flight looking.......2001-01-13

by far this is the most accessible introduction tothe forbidden threshold of Derrida's thought. Peggy Kamuf mounts the fairly limitless edifice of his work through seasoned selected excerpts,If you are fascinated forever by the conceptual, the literary,or analytic, the performative or philosphic focus,Derrida's work is like an alive moment that touches each in between elements of text,of ideas. All sometimes in simultanaeity or in context to each.If you come to Derrida it must from some place(time,geographic/cultural)some discipline, and sadly enough that acts to skew and blind,to opaque-ify Derrida's virtuoso,contextual,cross-referencing,overdetermined,overanalyzed modes of thought. But if you have scoured literature(Blanchot,Ponge,Jabes) not for its own sake,or thought, looked at ideas(Plato) (Heidegger) retrogressively yet with a committment to subversion(Genet) (Marx) of the Western canon,Derrida work serves these realms quite admirably.I humbly request you gander and pass time at this collection, peak between the blinds(Kamuf's metaphor)before you proceed directly to an original work. Derrida's work has that element of throwing forward a growth of petrified thought finding new conceptual life in the present, or not so distant past. So wherever you begin in Derrida it is like a timeless warp to be repeated some place, some time to come or had come,or had been,or will not ever be.

3 out of 5 stars good ideas, tedious excursion.......2000-05-17

It's unfortunate that Derrida has carried on the Western philosophical tradition of unnecessarily turgid, convoluted, and just plain bad writing inaugurated by the inflated Hegel and exemplified by Sartre and a host of other heady hacks. On the plus side, this is a solid collection of Derrida's most important pieces and enumerates some of his best ideas: difference, logocentrism, the trace, etc. Not for beginners, but if you're determined to read an important thinker, this may be required reading...some of it anyhow.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best anthologies I have read during recent years........1998-07-08

Peggy Kamuf offers a well organized anthology of Derrida's varied contributions.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensible.......2006-09-25

Written with humor and very concisely. I love the pictures (comics) Donald Palmer did a great job of introducing Kierkegaard and his philosophy to the masses.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Accurate and Fun Portrayal for the Beginner.......2006-05-28

Author/illustrator Palmer brings out Kierkegaard's brilliance in a way accessible to all, simply conveying the complexity of Kierkegaard the person and Kierkegaard the writings while providing a continuous laugh fitting for SK's own serio-comic ironic style. Kierkegaard's the epitome of epigrammatic writing and living, a zealous genius misrepresented by both secularist existentialists as well as respected Christian theologians/teachers who wrongly accuse SK of throwing out objective Christian truth, when really SK's subjectivity IS the evangelical truth of personal relationship with God, not mere external religious tradition. As for the comics in this book, they (as is SK) are HILarious, though probably more so because of the Bible allusions. This book contains a glossary and bibliography, and after this SK intro I'd recommend 'The Essential Kierkegaard' by the editors Hong, then skipping 'Concept of Irony' and starting with 'Either/Or' reading thru the rest of SK's books, which from the outset were written on 2 parallel tracks, one being pseudonymous works (from which it is unfair to attribute quotes to SK) and the other being signed works. P.S.--it's ironic that SK is now associated with the existentialist all-about-self-and-living-in-the-moment philosophies when SK lived so dead to self (his name even means 'graveyard') and with vision, methodically poured himself out in a planned series of books so that his readers entrapped in dead state church religiosity might become aware that they're dead and need to get a life (a self).

5 out of 5 stars Digestible Kierkegaard for Postmodern People.......2006-02-16

Few initially realize that the aesthetic slug which Kierkegaard often decried was he himself. Kierkegaard stuggled with determining, or rather willing, who he would be as a man in books like Either/Or. All of this is what makes him so relevant for postmoderns, existentialism students and even for card-carrying religionists.

The format of the For Beginners series is very inviting and helps make the subject matter less daunting and far from boring, which is the point, and a good reason to use this series' versions whenever getting to know a thinker for the first time. You will get a broad overview of the person's career without getting bogged down too quickly in any one particular life phase. Once you see what it is you appreciate in the career timeline, you can more easily zero in on that selection of books and go from there.

Kierkegaard For Beginners covers the Either/Or argument, the felial Abraham sacrifice delimma and explores Soren's own Christian commitment in a way that will charm and attract even nonchristians as it did me. His inspired figure of the "Knight of Faith" is a fascinating hook and resolves his existentialist concerns heroically.

At the bottom of his writing is the need to account for and deal productively with the bitter anxiety bedrock of the human psyche, and how to resolve that energy and bring it into a sort of freeing self-affirmation by resolving one's will on the issues on which it brings anxiety to bear (thus the "Either/Or" theme elsewhere in title by same name). The comical critique of this is "which breakfast cereal ought I to eat today?!" but the practical application is more in line with "should I renounce playing bridge with the back-stabbing cretins at the moose lodge and take up philosophy/working with kids/see Tibet.") The concern is on changing those things that make one anxious so that they no longer cause anxiety. This said, there is a positive spin on anxiety as the doorbell that "God" rings when he is ready to visit. The feeling of dread, thus, is the threshold over which one comes into contact again with the Divine or whatever makes your life unquestionably, profoundly worthwhile.

This book, as typically the series does, makes the full nature of the life and work roughly, excitingly intelligible in the space of about an hour. No small feat. Definite MUST for Kierkegaard beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Profound Book with Funny Illustrations.......2004-12-29

I don't consider this a comic because the content is too profound to be called a comic. If you understand the content of this book well, the illustrations make you laugh heartily. I find them entertaining.

I would have never understood what Kierkegaard's work is all about if I didn't start with this book because Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is said to have used more ink than anyone on Earth, having written more than what an average person can read in one lifetime. I would have understood nothing if I had to read several of his major books and try to figure out what they are all about. The author did a great job in summarizing his philosophy.

Though Christianity pervades his work, I do not think his philosophy is about Christianity. Instead I would say that he established a universal philosophy by using concepts of Christianity. In other words, his philosophy can be applied to any area of life in any culture.

One can spend money on a book and let that book sit somewhere, but this type of book becomes valuable when digested with effort. It becomes something money cannot buy.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't Sartre Get his Own Book in this Series?.......2004-09-20

This is a serviceable introduction to the writings and life of Soren Kierkegaard (SK). It hits several of his major works and emphases and does a pretty good job unpacking some difficult concepts (dread, despair, irony etc..). Palmer falls into a common trap, however, of interpreting SK through the lens of the twentieth century existentialists that utilize him. There was a point in the text where I had serious questions whether he had quoted Sartre more than SK himself (it is of note that Palmer also wrote Sartre for Beginners). This leads at times to anachronism in Palmer's presentation and less than full treatment of those ideas that were important to SK but dismissed by those who followed (namely passionate, ironic and devotional theological prose). The illustrations were typical of what I have come to expect from this series: helpful aids for visual learners, occasionally comical (there is a great one on Woody Allen's take on the intro to Sickness Unto Death), but usually a little disappointing, particularly considering the vast reservoir of ironic and comical material availed by SK's sharp wit and various pseudonyms.

Book Description

This volume is the first selection of the key writings of Wittgenstein - arguably the emblematic philosopher of the twentieth-century. Assembled for students, The Wittgenstein Reader represents the breadth, complexity, and evolution of Wittgenstein's work, from the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus - which set his philosophical agenda - to the later work on ethics and religion. This thematic selection corresponds roughly to the chronological development of Wittgenstein's philosophical interests, beginning with The Rejection of Logical Atomism through to Ethics, Life and Faith. Taken together, the selections are designed to add up to an overview of Wittgenstein's philosophical position, making The Wittgenstein Reader an ideal single text for course use.

5 out of 5 stars Great text for doing philosophy in class.......2005-05-20

For those that wish to use Wittgenstein to engage students with philosophy this book is a great way to do that without having to purchase several more expensive books. This selection of the key writings presents the evolution of Wittgenstein from the Tractatus to his later works. It enables students to experience doing philosophy and moving from one stage to another and another in a practical way. It corresponds well to reflective thinking stages and helps demonstrate the philosophical succession that leads to our contemporary position on truth, beauty and goodness. I agree that "Taken together, the selections are designed to add up to an overview of Wittgenstein's philosophical position, making The Wittgenstein Reader an ideal single text for course use."

"The Wolrd is the totality of facts, not of things. Not how the world is mystical, but that it is. For the clarity that we are aiming at is indeed complete clarity. And this simply means that the philosophical problems should completely disappear. So if you want to stay within the religious sphere you must struggle."

I qoute this phrase from your review; it was totally misunderstanding of yours. Your review will mislead the future readers of this amazing piece by Anthony Kenny.

If someone want to read Anthony's book, I strongly recommend his book about Aquinas. His English is really awesome: it was concise, powerful, and beautiful! not for americans tho'

5 out of 5 stars A handy access to Wittgenstein's works (themewise sorted).......2000-07-01

A very good introduction to Wittgenstein's works. Given the fact that Wittgenstein did not write in usual essay form and did not encourage publications of his works in his life time, the book is very good contribution to the context of Wittgenstein's readers. An abridgement of the Tractatus is given as first chapter. A good balance of thematically and chronological basis has been adopted in the sequence of other chapters. The sample chapter titles are : The Rejection of Logical Atomism , Meaning and Understanding,... The First Person, .. The Nature of Philosophy, Ethics,Life and Faith. A good index is provided. Two weaknesses are : The author provides a two-page introduction. A 10 page biography would have been proper . Also a last chapter which summaries the nature of Wittgenstein's works and its relation to other philosophical works would have been better. From the point of view of Wittgenstein's scholars, the remarks are provided without any citation numbering. It complicates refering the book. Same sample Wittgenstein's remarks: The Wolrd is the totality of facts, not of things. Not how the world is mystical, but that it is. For the clarity that we are aiming at is indeed complete clarity. And this simply means that the philosophical problems should completely disappear. So if you want to stay within the religious sphere you must struggle.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation by an excellent author.......2000-04-18

I myself am not a die-hard fan of epistemology. In fact, the only works dedicated to that topic which I can stand for long are written by Anthony Kenny. He does wonders with Wittegnstein. His commentary and selections truly make the philosophy come to life. Even if you aren't particularly fond of the material, it still proves to be a highly valuable and highly readable work.

4 out of 5 stars Very usable and useful.......2002-11-16

This volume contains a well-chosen selection of Aristotle's works. As another reviewer suggests, this book is a welcome middle ground between 'pocket' editions and a full blown Oxford edition.

The translations (though I am by no means a scholar of Greek) seem to be quite proper, and despite the fact that different sections may be translated by different people, there is no apparent unevenness.

Ackrill laments in the introduction that it would have been more proper to leave about 30-40 Greek words (such as 'logos', 'aitia', 'ousia') untranslated, since no single English word does them justice. But that since there are translations by several people involved, that was not possible.

All in all, this would be a very handy book for anyone interested in Aristotle.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compendium.......2001-08-12

For students who desire neither the whole Oxford corpus or who need a more condensed version of the Oxford translation, this edition, edited by the renowned Aristotlean scholar Ackrill, will be pleasantly kept in good company.

I own both books, and oddly find myself picking up this volume rather than the two-volume set, for easy reference. All the essential material is here, and none of the important elements are injudiciously edited. Thus for a single volume, it does double duty -- providing the most current translation of Aristotle, while appropriately editing the most salient parts for the specialist and non-specialist alike.

The book is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate semester courses as a complete enough text for either venue. It also has a nice topical index in the back that refers the reader to many essays written in the scondary literature.
