To watch Bruce Lee on film is an amazing experience. Those who have read Tao of Jeet Kune Do, however, know that Lee's prose can also be exhilarating. This praiseworthy and enduring bestseller (mainly written over six months when Lee was bedridden with back problems) compiles philisophical aphorisms, explanations on technique, and sketches by the master himself.

Book Description

This is Bruce Lee's treatise on his martial art, jeet kune do. This international best seller includes the philosophy of jeet kune do, mental and physical training, martial qualities, attack, and strategy. BEST SELLER!

Nice reading about Bruce Lee's philosophy in fighting methods and life in general.

5 out of 5 stars The Master.......2007-10-03

OPEN YOUR MIND, be a better person.

This book has
Instructions not how to fight, but how to be a better person.
There will always be a "master" "grandmaster" whatever.....
Those are not Masters in my definition.

A master is one who knows and who can teach,
and share his teaching fully.
This book doesn't have all of Bruce Lee's thoughts, and philosophy.
But it is better than nothing.

I took 6 years of Kung Fu, and my Sifu does not have an open mind.
Doesn't teach the philosophy, the reasons, how to be better.

The knowledge from this book will open your mind, and make you a wiser
person. (but you must be willing to be ready as a student.)

If your teacher, Sifu, Sensei, is not reading this, or not teaching
you how to be better -
You need to read this.

Rule 1 in life is learn,
Rule 2 is become better.

This book helps.
Bruce Lee the Master - he teaches us here.

Yes we have to pay for education.

I saw his funeral, of what the Hong Kong TV news was broadcasting
back as it happened. Never understood the loss of this society until now.

5 out of 5 stars A philosophical look at a physical art........2005-05-01

Bruce Lee was an amazing person, able to blend the physical beauty of the body with the philosophical beauty of the mind and create the true essence of martial art. In the Tao of Gung Fu, Bruce Lee devotes individual attention to philosophical and physical aspects of his form. His main attention is on Wing Chung, the style of Gung Fu that he himself studied under a Chinese master. Bruce devotes most of the first part of the book to basics and philosophical principles of Gung Fu, including the redirecting of the opponents energy to use it against him.
I would recommend this book to most practitioners, and those that are considering getting into martial arts. The second half of the book covers some basic techniques, stances, stretches, exercises, and practices, while the last twenty or thirty pages include personal quotes, answered questions, and biographies of some of the old masters.
This book is good for beginners because it gives them an insight into the art and some of the things it will take to be successful. It also allows them to understand some of the basic philosophies of the martial arts.
Those with practice will enjoy this book because it goes into some of the more interesting aspects of the art and is written eloquently by one of the greatest martial artists in history.
This should be added to most martial art libraries. I've practiced multiple styles for nearly ten years and find that this book is an invaluable resource to study and train with.

4 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee Tao of Gung Fu.......2005-01-31

The book Bruce Lee the Tao of Gung Fu was a good book because Bruce Lee hiself teaches you how to protect yourself from dangerous people. Also the style is gung fu a weapon to becoming a great skill fighter. Bruce Lee is one of the best in teaching
When and where to srike a person that is trying to take you down. But Bruce Lee doesent want his learners to just be using the style on any body just use it when needed. Their is three types of Gung Fu you can learn but to do so you have to be very fucus to learn step by step. Reading this book told me alot I didnt know.

I recomend this book to anybody or everybody because this book was good it taught me stuff that I never knew befor. I now that if somebody read this book they will feel the same way as me. If you like book that teaches you things then I recomend that you just give this book a try beacuse Bruce hisself puts hard work in makeing the reader's relax and enjoy the book. So yes I would recomend this book once again.

5 out of 5 stars Get The Real Message.......2004-08-26

This is a good book in that a reader can get a clearer idea of who Bruce Lee was. One reviewer was quite rude and unfair to Bruce Lee, took offense to the man as though he had written the book. Bruce Lee's writings were made into a book, Bruce Lee did not write nor construct the book. So appreciating that fact, it's fair to say that a reader gets a pretty good idea as to what type of prerson Bruce Lee was. Bruce Lee did study philosphy and he shared a lot of what he learned from others as well as his own personal views and opinions. Any true Bruce Lee fan knows Bruce never presented himself as "the one who knew everything" he tried to inspire and/or guide people to be themselves, find the true meaning of themselves an not be fixed, labeled, a copy, tied to any set thing or boxed into something with no way for self expression. And not just to be applied to the Martial Arts but in life as well. I think the insulting reader was confused by the deeper meaning of Bruce's writings and what he preceived to be "Bruce the great philosopher". The reader didn't get the real message, that if there is value in any book, as there is with this book (better insight and inspiration)then it should be recommended. Bruce Lee's writings should be appreciated for the content of what was originally from Bruce, his writings in this book should be looked upon to help people gain a better understanding of the thoughts and principles that guided him-Bruce Lee. If some people are inspired to follow his principles or those of whom he learned from, I think that's the point. If a reader has already made up in his or her mind that Bruce Lee's writings are not "real philosophy" or at least based on "real philosophy" then don't buy the book. In my opinion, this book would still be a good book no matter whose writings they were.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-07-02

Fame brings out jaleousy in some people. Bruce Lee was one of the greatest martial art authority and expert known to the world. Anyone with at least some basic spiritual understanding of chinese Kung Fu could just not write with total disrespect about Lee no matter what he/she has to say. In fact the reviewer below despite his belief of the contrary and maybe years of training betrays in his own words his own frustration and a total lack of measure. He sadly belongs with the novices.
One thing indeniable about Bruce Lee is that he got something right and beware if you only look at the surface you might simply miss it. Real skills lie deep beneath the surface. I recommend reading this book

1 out of 5 stars It's amazing..........2004-05-02

how even toilet paper with Bruce Lee's name on it would sell to some people. Take this book for example. In your everyday life, would you consider a 24 y/o an "authority" on anything? Nooooo -so why consider one an authority on a 4000 y/o art? Because he had great pecs and abs and was lucky enough to die in his early thirties, right? The book contains nothing (I repeat NOTHING) that can't be found in "Tao Te Ching", so if you want to read real Taoism philosophy go get that.

In TTOGF, Bruce displays his understanding (or lack thereof) of the aforementioned "Tao Te Ching", Chinese martial arts, the life, the universe and everything in the half-a$$ed way normally associated with youngsters trying to show off their "deep understanding" of profound matters. Pix are scarse and are the ones usually recycled in the other books of the series, although the, ahem, author's "Gung Fu Scrapbook" at the last pages, has to be seen to be believed.

He should had stuck with cha-cha. And, BTW, if you really, really have to buy a book on the MA, consider something written by a real martial artist e.g. Donn F. Draeger. Buying a book on MA written by Bruce Lee is like buying a book on archaeology written by Harrison Ford. Or, maybe more appropriate, Angelina Jolie.

Sheesh...

Book Description

Author of the immensely successful The Tao of Muhammed Ali, Davis Miller now turns his attention to another cult figure: film star and martial arts superhero Bruce Lee. As before, he brilliantly combines biography—in this case, the fullest and most revelatory to date—with coming-of-age autobiography.

Miller, Davis. The Tao of Bruce Lee: A Martial Arts Memoir

Miller combines a biography of Bruce Lee with his own coming-of-age story as a "karate kid" in the early 1970s. Whether describing how a viewing of Lee's Enter the Dragon changed his life or dispelling many of the myths behind the Lee legend, Miller manages to turn the story of two lives into a fascinating study of the nature of the hero in popular culture. 5 out of 5 stars Bruce And The Truth.......2007-01-25

The subtitle, A Martial Arts Memoir, describes what this book is really about. It's not a biography about Bruce Lee - though various "facts" and "myths" about him are detailed or debunked. Rather, it's a tale of how Bruce Lee's movies, athleticism, martial arts prowess, focus and determination, philosophy, and larger-than-life persona awoke the dormant soul of a ninety pound weakling. The Tao of Bruce Lee details Davis Miller's transformation from sad, loner, directionless, teenage failure into an accomplished martial artist, writer and, most importantly, vibrant, purposeful human being. The misery of Miller's life before seeing Bruce Lee explode on the screen in Enter the Dragon is, in places, gut-wrenching. But the sadness and despair are replaced by optimism and an the urge to yell, "`atta-boy!" as the young Miller slowly wriggles out of his cocoon. Miller's is a story of possibilities; if he can discover himself, find meaning and contentment in life, anyone can. Beside the quasi-spiritual autobiographical stuff, Miller touches on Bruce Lee's martial arts skills and reputation, his meteoric rise to superstardom, particularly in Asia, the facts surrounding his death and his enduring worldwide impact. There is a lot about Muhammad Ali and comparisons and contrasts between these two very talented men (and what they gave to the world.) Miller brings up Ali so much, one may wonder why he didn't simply write one book, The Tao of Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee. This book is better on reflection than when actually reading it. I like it more now - and would rate it higher - than I did when I turned the last page this morning. It has a good aftertaste.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Davis Miller.......2005-07-04

When I first read the Tao of Bruce Lee, I was expecting another biography of Lee (and being a die-hard fan of Lee, that would have been perfectly fine), but this book turned out to be a lot more than that.

The first half of the book deals with the life of Davis Miller himself - growing up as a scrawny, ninety pound kid in North Carolina - and the profound impact Lee had on his life. Inspired by Lee, Miller finds the motivation to try and better his meaningless life by practicing hard to become the greatest Martial Artist alive (or as he puts it: "lightning on limbs"). I am sure the discipline and dedication he learnt while practicing Martial Arts helped him later in his life as a writer.

The second half of the book focuses more on Lee, and tries to remove the "thick mist of money making" that has obscured the true story of Bruce Lee by presenting a very honest and well researched account of Lee's life. Overall, an extremely well written and readable book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun reading.......2004-12-03

"I desperately need something to read", I suddenly recalled when I was heading for my favourite coffeshop. So, I popped in and started to look for something, and this book sort of beamed at me. I got it under the impression that it was a biography about Bruce Lee, but it turns out that it is more a book about Davis Miller's relation to Bruce Lee and how Lee has influenced him. It is very easy reading and a quite nice book, and at page 97 and onwards a small biography about Bruce Lee (or Li Jun Fan, which was his real name) appears. Apparently it is hard to find any books with true facts, Davis Miller claims that this one shall be rather close to truth, and you will learn that Bruce Lee wasn't the lonely martial arts master that one thinks. If you like martial arts in general, and more specifically Bruce Lee, get this book, you will finish it within a couple of days and it is fun reading.

This book has tons and tons of photos of Bruce Lee but very little text information about Bruce and his life. It is a good overview but I was hoping for something a lot more substantial, especially interviews and such with those who knew and worked with Bruce.

3 out of 5 stars not a bad biography.......2001-05-01

Pretty accurate about Bruce basics. This book is ok, But If you're going to read only one book about Bruce Lee, I strongly recommend THE TAO OF BRUCE LEE by Davis Miller, which is beautiful, funny, sad, inspiring, and surprisingly, a complete pageturner. I know Bruce's story pretty well but when reading Davis's book, there were moments when he actually had me wondering what would happen next. It's one of the best books about anybody or anything that I have read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting art.......2004-07-01

I took Wing Chun Do in Hawaii under Kimo Wong for a few years, who was Demile's Student. (Demile himself was one of Bruce's first assistant instructors in his Seattle days.) In early editions of this book, it is Kimo's body flying through the air from Demile's 1 and 3-inch punches. I felt those punches from Kimo, and often trained at his house in private lessons, and have seen clearly what Demile intimates -- his version of this punch, which he passed down to Kimo, was even more refined than Bruce Lee's, involving far less body motion and commitment. The stories of people "flying" from a mere tap that barely moved the puncher's body are completely correct. And Demile and Kimo both got it down even notably better than Bruce.

This art is Bruce Lee's art, refined from Wing Chun by the addition primarily of fencing footwork for more mobility and much aggression, the inclusion of the backfist(a natural for Wing Chun), and a very strong form of sticking hands that classical Wing Chun students can find irritating and overly aggressive which Bruce learned and adapted from his own sifus in Hong Kong, Wong Shun Leung among them.

Demile adds psychological principles that may or may not be your cup of tea, but one must praise his organization and clear conveyance of Bruce's ideas and the great practicality of the system, which comes in no small part from the rare direct logic inherent in a system that believes utterly in simplicity as opposed to formality and mysticism. Wing Chun, the father style, is an excellent core style that teaches core principles of combat readily adaptable as the student grows, even to other arts, rather than emphasizing an endless litany of techniques that may never apply and may never end.

Demiles' excellent teaching potential I can vouch for, being one generation removed from his teachings myself and two from Bruce. After some small experience in Karate and then gaining a third degree blackbelt in Okazaki Kodenkan Jiu-Jitsu, I came to first classical Wing Chun under Robert Yeung and then Demiles' style of modified Wing Chun in the late 70's, and felt like I was starting to learn all over again. Jiu Jitsu gave me a strong and well-rounded group of core skills, but Wing Chun did the same in a quite different way, emphasizing hand striking and refining natural reactions and timing according to an especially severe and exacting logic and practicality, constantly tested and adjusted in sparring and sticking hands. Learning such different styles at the same time was quite a trick and sometimes felt like a real mind-bender, but it is a testament to the strength and subtlety of Wing Chun Do that the system's value was immediately apparent even to someone who had had plenty of time to build up layers of the kind of chauvinistic prejudice that is the norm rather than the exception between many martial artists, and moreover usually heartily reinforced and encouraged by every new link in a chain of fools thousands of years long.

Wing Chun cannot be learned from a book; it looks as flat, dull, and simplistic that way as it does in a movie, where we all want spinning kicks and maybe wire work. Much of the training involves the interior control of the mind and the body's energy. The process is not easily conveyed or learned, and the result is rarely pictorial in any way and certainly not screenworthy. But Demiles' book is a great spark to the inquisitive mind and far clearer than most. Highly recommended -- let me assure you that the stories of Wing Chun men practicing and fighting blindfolded, and effortlessly shooting men through the air with bizarrely powerful punches from an inch away are quite true, and I've experienced them numerous times -- but they are just the appetizers to the intriguing system of Wing Chun and its various modifications. Demile's book conveys reasonably well a very interesting modification of Wing Chun, very substantially based on it, but with interestingly flexible additions Bruce Lee added to give the initially defensive Wing Chun system some welcome mobility and flexibility.

And critically, whereas anyone can learn Wing Chun and Wing Chun Do, Jeet Kune Do is infinitely harder both to teach and learn, and Bruce Lee himself also admitted he began to hide some of his techniques when he taught his later arts, and told his assistant instructors to hide them. (Pak Sao/Biu Jee combo being an example he at one point forbade assistant instructor Dan Inosanto to teach.) So if you'd like an interesting introduction to Wing Chun general concepts and a greatly overlooked glimpse into a point of Bruce Lee's development that still holds great value for students without the world-class level of experience, instruction, and natural talent that eventually led him to the intensely idiosyncratic development of his own personal Jeet Kune Do, this book is a both a great historical snapshot and a clear, practical guide that still has a good deal of valuable and rarely seen knowledge to convey more than 30 years after Bruce's death regarding the path he took to get there.

5 out of 5 stars Effective, Simple and Practical!.......2001-12-07

I have trained at several martial arts: Judo, Tae Kwon Do and Jujitsu. They were all fun and informative. Competition in Judo gave me a sprained back and a pulled groin...both were painful. I gave up on martial arts after that and figured that I was getting too old for it. Then I came across a Wing Chun Do instructor who began giving me lessons every day at work. I became an addict to Wing Chun Do. It is extremely effective, and can be learned and practiced by anybody, regardless of age or strength or gender. This system is designed for the small person to be able to overcome a larger and stronger aggressor. James DeMile designed WCD based on his own expertise and with Bruce Lee's teachings of modified Wing Chun. Bruce Lee was 135lbs and was considered the best fighter in the world...he typifies the small person overcoming larger aggressors!

This Book introduces the basic concepts of Wing Chun Do in an easy to understand format. Wing Chun Do is a scientific system that encourages you to test your techniques to ensure proper results; it isn't dogmatic like many other martial arts. A big factor of the book and system is the ESP principle. That stands for Efficiency, Simplicity and Practicality. A technique must pass this ESP principle in order to remain valuable to you as a martial artist. Efficient means that it is as direct and short as possible with all unnecessary movements removed. Simple means that you can perform the technique without stretching or warming-up first, or that the technique is a fairly natural movement that the body easily assimilates. Practicality means that the technique must be effective; what good is it, if it doesn't work? That last part is important because many martial arts will tell you that their techniques are effective and expect you to take their word for it. Wing Chun Do challenges you to prove it to yourself. They give you the tools to scientifically examine a technique and evaluate it based on the ESP principle. This concept alone makes the book priceless, but there are many more goodies!

One last observation: a book is a good source of information for the brain, but defending yourself usually involves fighting and that is a physical activity to say the least. Physical activities are best learned by competent and experienced teachers. All certified WCD instructors are very competent at teaching the science of Wing Chun Do. Those who are weak or small or timid...Wing Chun Do is perfect for you. After injuring myself many times in 2 years of Judo competition, I am happy to report that 4 years of WCD study has yielded NO injuries. WCD students and teachers simply respect each other a great deal and take care to help students without injuring them.

      Product Description
