soap making for beginners.......2007-05-17
This book was very helpful with starting soap making
The delivery was on time. "thank you"
Great Resource For Beginners.......2006-12-20
In this book there are tips for making hand-milled soap, melt and pour soap and cold-pressed soap. It contains 19 soap recipes, some of which are illustrated in the middle of the book and look just like desserts - and no wonder with names like Chocolate and Coffee Lover's Temptation, Fresh As A Cucumber, Nancy Bee's Honey, Ron's Refreshing Raspberry, etc.
I was personally more interested in the first part of the book, but for those who'd like to make soap for profit, the second part of the book deals with business aspects, as in how and where to sell your soap, what to charge for it, how to go about promoting it and it covers possible legalities that is good to be aware of.
For me, an excellent book for beginners........2006-09-29
I am a beginner with soapmaking and purchased several soapmaking books prior to starting the craft. Of all the books read, this one was the simplest for me to follow. It was straight forward and provided one of the easiest and quickest methods for calculating sodium hydroxide and water. For the new soapmaker, I believe this is definitely one soapmaking book that you should read.
Not For Old-Time Soapmaking.......2005-08-28
This book is good for those who prefer to use the "modern" way to make soap, which is cold-processing. Why make soap in the first place if you are going to do it the simple way?
True soapmaking is done by cooking soap, and this book has no information on that process. The book does give helpful hints about specifics on oils and herbs to use, as well as other soapmaking knowledge - but don't get it if you want specific information on making soap the traditional way. James Herschberger is the soap GURU when it comes to classic soapmaking.
I'm so disappoint ........2005-08-05
Not a soap maker book.
Just saying common things that everybody knows.

Jewerly Making for un & Profit.......2007-04-02
Enjoyed this little book. Full of good ideas to get your business up and running. Especially good for the first time business person with no prior experience. Have enjoyed reading it and putting to use their suggestions.
I disagree with the negative review left by Mongopop.......2006-08-31
I have been in the jewelry making business for over 20 years. I teach jewelry making classes on a weekly basis. One of my students brought this book into class and I found it to be very informative.
Okay, so all I can say about Mongopop's review is "DUH". It says the book is for PROFIT...of course the book is going to focus on the business aspect for the majority of the book.
I come across many people that just do not have a creative talent or the ability to grasp concepts. Again...DuH....the book is helping people that probably already have a good base of knowledge about jewelry making. The book includes 8 year old instructions, because most beginnners NO MATTER HOW OLD are at that level. This is a new concept.
Anyway, I just wanted to comment that I was SO disturbed by MONGOPOP's lack of intelligence...I just had to make a comment.
The book is great...Do not let this one review steer you away from a book that will definately help you.
It really scares me that some people will go out of their way to post negative views. I wonder if Mongopop has ever given a positive review. I doubt it.
Don't bother.......2006-03-27
This is not much of either type of book jewelry or doing craft type home biz. The only thing about this books titltes is to sell books to people that don't know much about either of the main items in the title. If you know some about either this tome will not help in any case. You can get the copyright type stuff from the Gov for free, and the legal stuff from your library. Also the laws governing a small biz are so locally written check again with your local library. I do own it and will be trying to off load it.
Lots of Great Info!!.......2005-09-14
Originally borrowed this book at the local library-liked it so well, I purchased it through Amazon-lots of really good information in a friendly easy to read style. I'd recommend it for anyone who is thinking about going into their own jewelry making business.
BirdieBeader.......2005-09-12
"Make Money Doing What You Love"....That is what this book was written for. It was NOT to teach you how to bead. One should already be skilled before attempting to sell their creations or to even think about starting a business. I found it to be informative and helpful, as did the people that I teach. It was easy to understand and well written. I'm pleased to have found this book through Amazon.com. Thank-You. BB

Praise for Your Portable Empire
"In a sea of snake oil and get-rich-quick nonsense about fast money on the Internet from people who haven't really done it, O'Bryan's book is a ship of sanity to an island of commonsense e-commerce.? This works."
-Mark Joyner, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Simple?ology
"The Internet has leveled the playing field, making it possible for anybody to start a business. O'Bryan, however, has given us the easy-to-follow instruction manual on how to first discover your niche and then build it into a big enterprise that can run itself from almost anywhere-all from his successful and proven formulas. A great book for anybody serious about a better quality of life."
-Joseph Sugarman, Chairman, BluBlocker Sunglass Corporation
"This amazing book can free all working people to make money doing what they truly love!"
-Dr. Joe Vitale, author of The Attractor Factor and Zero Limits
"I know O'Bryan as a friend and colleague. He has painstakingly put together a book, with no frills or fanfare, that straight-up shares his hard-won wisdom. May I urge you to get it and read it??Not only will you enjoy it-but once you act on what you learn, you can profit mightily as well. Why? Because what's in this book lets you stop making the victim's compromise on a daily basis-and start doing the victory dance, whenever you want!''
-David Garfinkel, author of Advertising Headlines That Make You Rich
"O'Bryan lives the portable empire, running his business from a laptop with a cigar and a glass of fine wine. There is no one better to be your guide as you create your own, because he's laid out every step for you in his inspiring and easy-to-read book. There is no need to be chained to a desk or locked in a cubicle, and your business can take you far beyond your kitchen table with the blueprint O'Bryan shares from his own successful journey.''
-Craig Perrine, www.maverickmarketer.com
"Freedom-O'Bryan's new book makes you understand exactly how to obtain it and create the lifestyle of your dreams. Anyone who can go from being a dead-broke musician living in a mobile home to generating six figures in a single month is worth reading.''
-Bill Hibbler, coauthor of Meet and Grow Rich
Customer Reviews:
The information is good, his ethics are questionable.......2007-10-04
O,Bryan's included some useful information on how to get started so thats the good news. However his ethics are questionable. He encourages you to offer good products for sale and then continues to tell you that it's possible to write something worth selling in an hour.
If you're selling something thrown together in an hour its not going to be very good so don't talk about holding to the highest ethics.
Read for the info which is good (4 stars) but ignore the self promotion and the sleaziness that permeates the whole book (which drags it down to 2 stars).
Better yet get it from the library and avoid giving this guy any more money.
After reading this I felt the need to take a shower and wash the snake oil off.
My Guidebook!.......2007-10-04
I bought this book and read it in about 2 days -- could not put it down. I felt like I was visiting with a friend who was helping me start my new internet business. I am re-reading it now, and often find myself referring to different sections of the book. Thank you, Pat, for helping me get off to such a good start!
This one will stay on my desk, for ready reference........2007-10-04
"Though shalt not b.s. thyself" That's a quote from this book and a hint of what's in store for you as you read. What a great message. A great mantra. Write it down and post it where you see it all the time. Then get the book. There is so much in it to draw from.
Pat O'Bryan writes in a direct manner, all the while telling a story. It's an enjoyable mix. I liken it to a favorite teacher in school who found just the right way to impart information and made you feel valued at the same time. Maybe that's my point. Somehow, I felt valued as I read. I also felt that it is something that can really be accomplished, now that I know what an auto responder is and how to find my niche.
Enough of this, I'm off to build my own Portable Empire. Maybe I'll check out his Portable Empire on Second Life. Why not? I'm starting a real second life now.
A Teaser.......2007-09-28
I was very disappointed in this book. Touted as a guide for those interested in developing internet businesses,it veers from shameless self-promotion to superficial snippets taken from every popular spiritual and psychological movement. The information provided is quite basic and easily ascertainable for free from other sources on the internet and elsewhere. There are chapters containing interviews with other entrepreneurs which serve as promotion and cross promotion. While the author and his pals are enjoying luxurious lifestyles "baiting" suckers like me, I regret to inform them that there is a learning curve. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
It has become vogue on Amazon for the author's friends, millionaire mind group members, associates and affiliates to provide inflated ratings of books. This practice is deceptive and genuinely aggravating to those of us who rely on fellow readers' honest assessments. While surely some are sincere representations uncolored by association or gain, many are not.
This is not a terrible book. Written in a conversational, Joe Vitaleesque tone, it does provide a starting point for the uninitiated. It is not the reference I had hoped it would be.
This book is a no B.S. look into the mind of one of the best internet marketers in the business........2007-09-25
Simply said, Your Portable Empire will transform your life from mediocre to miraculous. Bonuses or no bonuses, this book is worth every single cent.

Excellent simple reading.......2007-09-14
I was recommended this book and now I'm recommending it.
This book gives simple guidelines on how to determing what your actual selling figures should be based upon your actual numbers. Good reading for anyone just starting their own business.
How much money do you want to make?.......2004-08-06
If you're new into business or a veteran, this book will answer the question of pricing. So many of us work hard at the wrong price. A clear and understandable method for charging the right price. Thanks!!
A must read for all business owners!.......2004-08-05
As a small business owner I was looking for a book that would assist us in our pricing. "How Much Should I Charge" did just that and more. This book is an excellent tool that brought up expenses we would have never thought of including in our selling price.
A must for all creative people trying to make a living........2004-08-04
Wow !! Finally a helpful book. Being a potter and making each item by hand has always caused me to ask "How much should I charge?". After years of searching for help in this area I came across this wonderful book. Those with MBA's may not need this book, but those of us with BFA's, MFA"s and just plain creative talents will find this book very educational. Ellen's easy reading style and logical approach to pricing makes this book a "must have". Many myths about pricing are pointed out, like charging what every one else does or what the market will bear. If I am to make a living creating handmade items it is important to identify my customer and realize I am not competing with mass produced products. Thank you Ellen for putting me on the road to profitablity.
It could have been different.......2003-05-31
This book is mediocre. The layout is fine, quite attractive. But the contents are obvious. One can hardly believe that somebody needed to write a book about it. There is nearly no insight. Only common sense.
The writer is skilled, she could have made a much better book on a wider subject. But where she stands with this book, it is simply poor. You should read instead her other book which is very good: "Where Did the Money Go?".

Different type of book.......2007-05-12
Very interesting read into into the wrtting business, I liked the candor and radomness of it all. Good book to read if your any creative business and you have to sell your own ideas for a living.
A "must- have" reference for any aspiring or practicing entertainment industry screenwriting professionals.......2006-09-04
Doing It For Money: The Agony And Ecstasy Of Writing And Surviving In Hollywood is a no- nonsense, insider's account of what writing for the "Hollywood Machine" is really like. From idiotic executives to volatile stars to rewrites that shred the intentions of the original script, Doing It For Money tell it like it is, and offers a wealth of tips, such as registering one's work with the Writers Guild of America as a hedge against plagiarism (both guild and non-guild members can do this for a small fee). A highly readable account, filled with fascinating anecdotes sure to entertain even non-writers as surely as they educate aspiring writers about what to expect. Deftly edited by Daryl G. Nickens for The Writers Guild Foundation, Doing It For Money is a "must- have" reference for any aspiring or practicing entertainment industry screenwriting professionals.
More than just stories.......2006-08-17
I really liked this book because it not only gave me an inside look into what writing scripts is really like, but it also offered great tips and advice for working the hollywood machine. Some of the stories were really funny and biting and some were more serious, but I enjoyed them all. A few are similar but I guess that just shows that the experience is shared in some ways. I know I procrastinate whenever possible! So, it's good to know that the writers of Syriana, Field of Dreams and The Big Easy all do the same. Maybe I'll be an A-list writer some time soon. I know I still want to even after reading some of the horror stories.
Really, some were just unbelievable. A fun read!
Disappointing.......2006-07-29
I bought the book because of a good review in Entertainment Weekly. Hmm. To me, it was basically lightweight, somewhat self-serving stuff really without much to say. Three pieces were good, the rest forgettable. The book was also disorganized -- much of the writing uncredited (and presumably by the editor, but why hide it?) as an example. Compared to Kazan On Kazan and the last Bogdanovich, two books of the genre recently read that delivered, sorry, but this book struck out. Makes one wonder about the quality of minds at work in Hollywood today. And this was a Guild project. Hmm. -Bill Hare
The Real Deal from the Real Players.......2006-07-18
This is a first hand peek behind the curtain of Hollywood by some of the best names in the business. The book provides great first-hand vantage points to the pain and pleasure that come with writing in Hollywood. It provides some great insights into the art of writing itself, as well as dealing with those amorphous minds known as development executives. For anyone interested in not only screenwriting, but fans of movie & TV itself, and how the final gourmet sausage comes out of the factory, this book delivers on all counts.
Book Description
What’s Your Exit Strategy?
Growing a business you can sell, putting a deal together to buy another company, or taking on outside capital to foster growth all require a certain know-how in terms of language, preparation, and process. Rarely do business owners use the resources and strategies that have been tried and tested by major companies and brands. Instead, most business owners choose to bootstrap, hoping their company can keep up by growing organically, and forge ahead without thinking about how to make their single biggest asset—their company—worth the most possible.
In Capitalize on Your Success, investment banker Julie Garella demystifies Wall Street and the capital markets, offering straightforward advice and answers in place of incomprehensible business jargon and lofty financial theories. With her decades of experience working with closely held companies, Garella creates a unique, definitive guide for all business owners looking for step-by-step guidance and clearly focused strategies.
Her accessible approach shows business owners how to:
Grow a business they can sellRealize the importance of capital, and why Debt is not a dirty word Understand what investors look for when backing a companyDevelop long-term financial strategies that create valueDiscover the “intangible extras” in a deal—what makes a company worthKnow what needs to be in place beforehand to make a deal happen
An indispensable resource, Capitalize on Your Success takes the key concepts of funding, growing, and selling a company and distills them into practical knowledge every business owner can use.

Book Description
Ever since the first coin was minted in the seventh century B.C., money has been central to human society as one of the elemental forces driving the affairs of individuals and nations. But in spite of mankind's preoccupation with the making of money, little attention has been paid to the meaning of money in modern society. Modern society has also overlooked questions about the culture of giving and caring.
What motivates one to give? Why should someone care for those outside his or her own social circle-especially for the poor dwelling on the fringes of society? How a society answers questions such as these is critical in determining the character of that society. And yet, these are questions that modern societies have largely ignored. Doing Well and Doing Good addresses this blind spot, exploring the big ideas that shaped the rise of the unique Western tradition of giving and caring by examining selected writings from some of the most influential thinkers of Western society. Sometimes controversial, often challenging, always illuminating, the issues of money, giving, and caring are vital themes that stand at the crossroads of many issues in contemporary society. They are topics that no responsible citizen or leader in a free society can afford to ignore.

Thorough discussions of timeless topic.......2007-07-15
Os Guinness has given us a through review of ideas surrounding giving, charity, empowerment and "entitlement." Readers who are familar with Guinness may be somewhat surprised in that although Guinness is a Christian author and this book was sold through a Christian book outlet, and there are discussions of the Good Samaritan and the Widow's donation, there is no more discussion of Christianity (or religion in general) than one would find in a similar book by any secular scholar. I think this actually improves the book, showing the universiality of the ideas without knee jerk reactions. The book gives an even handed discussion, noting Carnegie's philanthropy, for example, while also noting the dangerous and inhuman conditions under which his employees toiled. Couldn't Carnegie have built a few less libraries and paid his workers a bit more? They didn't want a library, they wanted to not have to fear for their lives at work and put in six day, 60-80 hour weeks for poverty-level wages. That notwithstanding, Carnegis is allowed to express himself in his own words, and an even-handed treatment was offered all around. The theme that comes through the book most strongly is the idea of helping and empowering versus merely giving. Do we teach a person to fish and teach him/her how to make the equipment, or do we just give them a fish? Guinness is very clear that we must do the former. Discussions of Habitat for Humanity and the relative successes and failures of various strategies for soliciting chairty in the "entertainment age" are very striking. The only topic I felt was missing was a discussion of Milton Hershey and his efforts to create community and how he endowed his residence/school for orphans. We come close with a discussion of Ford and the subsequent disaster that the Ford Foundation became from the Ford family's perspective, but I sentimentally would have loved to see tribute given to Milton Hershey and an exploration of his ideas/actions (see Michael D'Antonio's fine biography of Hershey). Guinness has given us an important work, one worthy of study in terms of deciding how to best give of one's self.
Very difficult read, but excellent and profound examination of the issue.......2006-08-28
Os Guinness gives the reader a very thought-provoking examination of the role of money in society by exploring the idea and issue of the poor and their needs as well as the wealthy and their responsibility. Guinness first examines the role of money in societies as a tool for business and industry while at the same time being an object of desire and worship. The Christian reader not only gets to examine the historical and cultural significance of money, but also will be challenged to personally examine their own views and values of the role of money. Next Guinness looks at the concept of giving - and asks the penetrating questions about the motivation behind giving and the positive as well as the negative results of giving to others. Finally, Guinness examines the modern rise of philanthropic endeavors - the business behind giving that has grown into an industry to rival any other economic producer! Guinness asks probing questions about modern giving - will the private sector be able to meet all the needs of a modern society without the aid of the government, does modern giving remove the giver from the receiver too much, why do the less-fortunate give a greater percentage of their income, and does giving today really remedy the social problems it seeks to address?
Doing Well and Doing Good is a rather difficult read, but well worth the time and effort to examine such a complex and interesting subject that really needs to be thought through by Christians today, especially those Christians with significant resources who are wishing to make a difference by being good stewards of what has been given to them. Guinness doesn't leave a stone unturned in his historical examination of this issue and leaves the reader with much to contemplate and consider.

Our Wildest Dreams has the "new" right stuff.......2001-08-19
I connected with the words of Joline Godfrey. Her evaluation on what women are doing in business, helps all of us see the opportunities to do things differently. The first chapter where she talks about the right stuff struck home - women needing connection with others, seeing people as whole individuals, wanting balance in life, seeing business as a creative outlet, are all principles she dives into - they make sense for those seeking to more than financial goals. There are many bottom lines in life - the women business owners the book reviews get it and are designing business with a bigger picture in mind. Thank you Joline for shifting my thinking - I was already headed in that direction - your book help me get there a little faster.

This book was a life changer for me. My entire paradygm shifted about my own potential to be an entrepreneur after reading this book. It was instrumental in my decision to leave my public school teaching position and start my own business. I found the specific stories of women's successes and struggles encouraging. I had often given up on ideas once problems started to arise, but after reading this book, I adopted the mantra "Every problem has a solution." It has helped me through many a seemingly crisis situation. I have reread it several times. The most valuable piece for me was the perspective that we women can do something that we love, have fun AND make a living. My husband also enjoyed this book, so it's not just for women.
