When Cane River was published in 2001, Lalita Tademy established herself as the chronicler of her own family's life, since their arrival here as slaves in the 1800s. Mixing family history, fiction, and fact made the story rich and unforgettable enough that Cane River became an Oprah's Book Club®. Now, with Red River, Tademy has done it again. Writing is a second career for Tademy, who is a former vice-president of Sun Microsystems. She left the corporate world to immerse herself in her family's history--and the history of the south.
In 1873 in the small southern town of Colfax, Louisiana, history tells us there was a riot. The Tademy family knows different. "1873. Wasn't no riot like they say. It was a massacre..." The blacks are newly free, just beginning life under Reconstruction, with all its promises of equity, the right to vote, to own property and, most importantly, to decide their own future as individuals. Federal Government troops are supposed to arrive to protect the rights of the colored people--but they are not yet on the scene.
In one wretched day, white supremacists destroy all the optimism and bright promise by taking Colfax back in an ugly and violent manner. The tragedy begins with the two sides: the white Democrats of Montgomery and the colored and white Republicans of Colfax in the courthouse, finally meeting face to face to discuss their differences. Then, a group of white thugs kills a colored man who was not involved in the courthouse struggle. He was home minding his business and the ugliness came and found him.
The confrontation that follows results in the death of more than 100 black men, killed by white supremacists bent on denying them their voting rights and keeping in office those who uphold the status quo prior to the Civil War. The massacre is only the beginning of Tademy's story. Using reliable sources wherever they may be found, she tells the hard and proud story of Sam Tademy, Israel Smith and their families as they fight their way back from the massacre. They get a foothold in Colfax, finally starting a school, owning land and businesses and becoming full-fledged citizens, as they were meant to be.
Tademy tells part of our history that we would like to forget; she also tells the story of her family, which is a story worth remembering. --Valerie Ryan

Little Character Development.......2007-06-13
I think I am the first to give this a low review. While I admire author for tackling such a huge story, there was little to no character development. This story follows 3 generations and just as you really start to get into one generation, you skip to the next. The unfortunate thing is that 2 characters of the story survive for at least 3 generations yet they were barely mentioned after the first third of the book. I would have rather the book be written in the first person of these two characters. I wanted to like this book, but I just could not.
She did it again.................2007-06-06
I found this book a little slower than Cane River at first, but after finishing it, I think I enjoyed it as much as the first one. It's a little difficult to keep track of all the names of the characters, but the pictures help you get to know them.
My book club approved.......2007-06-05
This was a selection for my multiracial multigender highly educated book club and we all enjoyed the book. And we all finished the book. It allowed us to discuss a variety of topics including race, race relations, slavery, family connections, history, the inaccurracies of history as it is reported in the US, gender roles, and a variety of other things. It is a great read for a book club.
'This is not a story to go down easy,'.......2007-05-25
It is a story of inequality, of racially motivated violence and inequity. At the same time, it is a story of resilience, of faith, of courage, and of hope for a better future.
Ms Tademy shows us history through the eyes of her family members. The events of Easter Sunday April 13 1873 in Colfax Louisiana, identified by some as 'the bloodiest single act of carnage in all of Reconstruction' saw 153 people lose their lives.
The first part of the novel leads us up to these events. The second part deals with life beyond and of the continuing struggle to establish a 'coloured school', and the battles of people to reconcile the idealism of equality with the reality of survival. For some this is reinforced by the strong belief in the power of the 'written word to help you flesh out those things you know and those you don't'.
I do not know much about this period of American history, and I will be attempting to redress this. This is a story worth reading and I recommend it highly. I suspect that this will be one of my outstanding reads for 2007.

Inspiring.......2007-05-08
This is hard for me, as it is coming from a 'white' perspective. However, my grandchildren are half black, but do not get much contact with that side of their family, and I wanted them to at least be aware of their history. Their mother has claimed from their conception that people's attitudes have changed and her children will be fine. No, they won't! In this country of the 'free', there will always be stigmatisom, whether you have a drop of Negro,Asian or whatever, blood, you will be treated differently! My grandson is 14, and has been through this '[...]' already. It breaks my heart! This book shows that it does not matter if you are as white as white can be, if anyone knows that you have one drop of Negro blood, then you are Negro.I did not invent this attitude, but I will fight for my granbabies until I die. Thankyou, so very much for writing this book!!!

Book Description
While Kail is away from Hattusa, his commander Rusafa is accused of attacking a noblewoman, and, on Nakia's suggestion, is subjected to a brutal test of innocence. News then comes from Ugarit, a nation allied to the Hittites, that Kail's brother is missing. Yuri goes to investigate and finds that the king of Ugarit has received a letter from Nakia that's turned him against Kail. As for the people of Ugarit, they're convinced they're about to be slaughtered--not by their conquest-hungry neighbors the Egyptians, but by the Hittites!

Nakia's at it again.......2007-04-05
I got this book today (and actually read it along with the preceeding six books) and in this volume we have Kail wanting to marry Yuri and Nakia scheming to kill her yet again. I wouldn't say that volume 17 is great, but perhaps that's because its clear something big is being set up and will take place in volume 18, which is not due out til July. Yuri and Kail's love continues to grow though, and while volume 17 doesn't focus heavily on it, like a few volumes that preceed it, they do have some tender moments. This volume deals a lot with the impending war between the Egyptians and the Hittites, at the end Ramses says to himself that he will have another chance with Yuri, as he was not aware that she remained with Kail it seems, so in book 18 we should prepare for lots of Ramses and Yuri moments, and Yuri was none too pleased that she would have to see Ramses again.

Veteran crime writer Ann Rule is uniquely qualified to chronicle the grisly career of Gary Ridgeway, the man convicted of being the "Green River Killer," the most prolific serial killer in American history. Not only is she one of the more successful true-crime authors, but for nearly 20 years, Rule was exceptionally close to the case, reporting on it for a Seattle newspaper, preparing a long-delayed book on the subject, and living within a few blocks of the strip of highway where most of Ridgeway's victims were abducted. In Green River, Running Red, Rule lends unique humanity to the string of murders that haunted the Seattle area throughout the '80s and '90s by exploring the lives of the dozens of young women who fell into prostitution and were ultimately murdered. Similarly, she catalogues Ridgeway's troubled and bizarre life in such a way that the reader becomes uncomfortably familiar with Ridgeway, although it's never truly clear what drove him to commit such heinous crimes. Along the way, she traces the decades-long struggle of the law enforcement officials assigned to the case as they tracked down countless leads, questioned innumerable suspects, and explored multiple theories that came up empty before finally cracking the case through a series of technological advancements and a little luck. But the most disturbing aspect of the Green River killings (named for where the first victims were found) is how they occurred in relatively plain sight, with Ridgeway, seemingly living an unremarkable life, dwelling and working within a few miles of where his lengthy killing spree took place and evading capture for years. Rule skillfully weaves herself into her account, relating the psychic and cultural impact of the case as it evolved, but she never takes the spotlight off Ridgeway, his eventual captors, and the women who died at his hands.--John Moe
Book Description
In her most personal and provocative book to date, the #1 bestselling master of true crime presents "her long-awaited definitive narrative of the brutal and senseless crimes that haunted the Seattle area for decades" (Publishers Weekly). This is the extraordinary true story of the most prolific serial killer the nation had ever seen -- a case involving more than forty-nine female victims, two decades of intense investigative work...and one unrelenting killer who not only attended Ann Rule's book signings but lived less than a mile away from her home.
Download Description
"In the most extraordinary book Ann Rule has ever undertaken, America's master of true crime has spent more than two decades researching the story of the Green River Killer, who murdered more than forty-nine young women. The quest to discover the most prolific serial killer in American history has been an intimate part of Ann Rule's life, with some of the corpses found only a mile or so from where she lived and raised her own daughters. She did not know the killer, but he apparently knew her and attended many of her book signings. For twenty-one years, the killer carried out his self-described ""career"" as a killing machine, ridding the world of women he considered evil. His eerie ability to lure his victims to their deaths and hide their bodies made him far more dangerous than any infamous multiple murderer in the annals of crime. A few men -- including a law student, a truck painter, and a taxi driver -- eventually emerged as the prime suspects among an unprecedented forty thousand scrutinized by the Green River Task Force. Still, there was no physical evidence linking any of them to the murders until 2001, when investigators used a new DNA process on a saliva sample they had preserved since 1987, with stunning results. Ann Rule has followed the case since July 1982, when the first body -- that of teenager Wendy Lee Coffield -- was found in the Green River, snagged on pilings under a bridge. Rule has compiled voluminous files, working through an incredible 95,000 pages of official police records, transcripts, photographs, and maps, winnowing out the chaff and identifying what is truly important. Over the years, she gained unparalleled access to all the key players -- from King County Sheriff Dave Reichert to those close to the killer and his victims. When finally apprehended and convicted, the killer made a detailed confession -- of his twisted sexual obsessions -- that will shock even the most jaded reader. Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry -- of who these young girls were, and who they might have become. A chilling look at the darkest side of human nature, this is the most important and most personal book of Ann Rule's long career. "

In the River.......2007-08-02
Given that she had twenty years to compile her research, Ann Rule had an opportunity to produce the definitive book about the Green River Killer. While other books on the topic preceded this book in print, Rule waited for the Green River Killer to be identified and convicted before publishing. Rule wanted to be thorough, and perhaps she was too thorough.
With a crime spree that began in the early 1980's, it was not until 2001 and major breakthroughs in DNA technology that they were able to arrest Gary Ridgway. A very plain man, he did not fit the image of a monster that most people expected of the killer. Having a bizzare childhood and poor social relationships with others would seem to send signals that there was a problem. Yet Gary Ridgway always seemed to be flying under the radar.
In the early stages of writing this book, Rule decided to recognize each victim as a person individually. While I think this was the right thing to do, a few paragraphs about each of the 48 victims seemed out of place. Not only did it slow the pace of the book, but the brevity or the short passages made them lack any genuine insight into the lives of the victims. Short of making the book 900 pages, I am not sure how Rule could have avoided this quandry.
While many of Rule's books have never solicited my interest, I have enjoyed some of the more focused books that she has written such as "Small Sacrifices" and "I-5 Killer". This does not rank among Rule's better works as it seems to be lacking in vision and occasionally Rule's placing herself in the story seems to scream for self-importance. In reality, the book is about the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway. That is what the description of the book says, not the short biographies of the Green River Killer's victims or Ann Rule's biography.
not the best book on the subject.......2007-06-15
although this book is fairly comprehensive, it comes off as quite self-serving at times. rule never passes up an opportunity to make herself seem like an insider in the case, or to point out what a caring, sensitive, thoughtful person she is in the midst of so much tragedy and horror.
if you're really interested in the story of the green river killer, i'd recommend starting with smith & guillen's "the search for the green river killer" for a detailed account of what happened, followed by mark prothero's (with carlton smith) "defending gary" for further insight into the killer's mind and crimes.
Ann Rule does it Again.......2007-05-22
If anyone wants "gore" or full focus on the killer then maybe this book is not for them. Probably this was one Ms Rules most difficult books to write & I read somewhere that it maybe some time before she returns full focus on serial killers. Finally here we see more focus on the victims rather than on the killer, who they were, their hopes & dreams, the families that were left behind. This killer has already had the spotlight focused on him for too long & thank goodness someone has thought to remember his victims were real life people and does not focus only on their pain & terror (and by reading some other reviews people bought the book only for that). A great read from start to finish and I would reccomend it to anyone
Very interesting.......2007-03-11
This novel about the green river serial killer was both informative and an interesting read. Ann Rule is a master at writing crime novels and this book is no exception. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in crime or is considering going into some sort of law enforcement profession. =]
A Book Worth Waiting For..........2007-01-14
Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I found this book to be both interesting and engaging. If you have followed Ann Rule's work over the years, you know she has been waiting for (and working on) this book but was unable to do so because the killer had not yet been caught. I've read other books on the GRK and found this one to be the perfect book 'end' to the story.
I find it refreshing that she focused on the victims, who were for the most part, faceless "hookers" to much of the population while these crimes were happening. I also liked the way the narrative went from crime to killer; weaving time together for the reader. I wanted to read this book precisely because Ms Rule was so involved. I enjoyed the fact that she'd been to the scenes and met the key players. As a true crime reader, I put this near the top of my list.
Book Description
Her first mistake was emigrating alone. Was this one even worse? Augusta Bjorklund, after discovering her intended bridegroom married someone else, decided to leave her broken heart in Norway and start a new life in America. But knowing no English, Augusta misunderstands a ticket agent's directions in St. Paul, Minnesota, and in the harried confusion, she boards the wrong train. Her Bjorklund relatives eagerly await Augusta's arrival in North Dakota. When the train reaches the town of Blessing with the woman nowhere in sight, the worried family hopes she will be on the next train. But the following morning only her trunk shows up. Arriving at the end of the line, Augusta is met by a handsome young rancher, Kane Moyer, who is waiting for his Norwegian mail-order bride…. She told him she was headed for Blessing. Why will he not take her there?
Customer Reviews:
Not the best in the series, but worth the time to read.......2003-04-08
I love this series, but Augusta isn't my favorite character and I really wanted to spend more time with the folks in Blessing. I also thought that the plot was a little too far-fetched. Most of what Ms. Snelling writes is very true to homesteading (with the usual concessions to fiction), but this was one was harder to see happening that Augusta would get that lost and not end up dead or used. God does work in mysterious ways, so I can imagine it could have happened, just unlikely. But I was glad to see more of the characters in Blessing!
Blessings in Disguise.......2002-12-01
I read this book in the series first. I found it with the new arrivals in the library. I couldn't put it down. When I discovered it was the LAST in a series, I went to find the first book. Ms. Snelling writes in a way that compells you to continue to the next chapter to see what will transpire. It's nice to find a book written this well that is historical fiction!!!. I enjoy reading about the pioneer era in this county. These historical details are a nice addition to the plot of the "lost" heroine Augusta. However,I would suggust reading the books in order.
all the books were wonderfu........2001-09-25
I for one would like for you to write more about the people you introduced to us in Blessing, N.D. Like, does Penny and Mary Martha have children, does Karen start a school for the deaf, does Zeb McCallister come back and etc.? What those people went through reminded me of my parents and grandparents went through when they came here from Norway many years ago. Thank you for some great reading. Ardith Haraldson
Wish there were more.......2001-06-19
The only problem I could see with the Red River Series was that it had ended.I would very much enjoy finding out if Hjelmer and Penny ever became parents and whatever would become of Kaaren"s school. It would have been nice to see all of the Bjorkland children grown and the town grow as well.Ms.Snelling could make them into a saga instead of just a series.I thoroughly enjoyed all of the books.
Is Blessing a Town, State of Mind or a Predicament?.......2001-06-15
I am so glad I waited for book six in this series because after book five I was ready to throw in the towel. However, this one more than compensated my determination to finish the series!
Augusta- the oldest Bjorkland daughter is finally immigrating to the United States. Her mother, Bridget is excited to have her join the staff of her new Boarding House in the town of Blessing. Henry has come into Bridget's life, but she is way too old for romance - or is she?
Kane is introduced in the book for the first time and is a bachelor-rancher who has sent for a mail order bride from Norway. He lives a whole state away in South Dakota. A lost letter of explanation lends incredible suspense and disaster to his life.
A cluster of unavoidable situations and horrible consequences because of language barriers lead to some exciting, troubling legal, spiritual and familial fiascoes which take emotional toll and tax the patience of the families of the participants.
The storyline does move from Blessing to the Ranch and the journeys of Hjelmer but Snelling does a great job keeping it systematized and integrated. I found it somewhat frustrating to have to leave a character when the author chose to jump to a different location, but I understood her reasoning.
A good portion of the book is consumed with the search for Augusta, carried out by Hjelmer and Henry at the insistence of Bridget. A generation gap complete with different expectations and considerably exclusive social mores causes part of this book to become a mystery as well.
Many of the original characters are now in the background, and this book primarily features Hjelmer, Bridget, Kane and Augusta. The manner in which their lives become interwoven is masterfully orchestrated and carried out with intrigue, suspense and emotion.
I highly recommend the complete series of six books, and I recently learned that Lauraine Snelling has instituted a down-the-line-sequel series titled "Return to Red River." The first book is called "A Dream to Follow" and I intend to read this new series as well.
I do think the author needs a finer tuned editing system to keep straight the names of her characters, but for the most part, the excitement of this final book in the series more than made up for the slight variations.

A Land to Call Home.......2007-01-11
Very interesting book and brings to mind the hardships and heartache endured by those who opened up this country as they moved west, yet they endured.
Another great addition to a wonderful series!.......2003-04-08
There is much happiness and hope in this book. Ingeborg's marriage to Haakan is a wonderful blessing to her and her children. There are some new characters to add spice to the books and the discovery of Grace's deafness to add tears, but Kaaren and Ingeborg's faith continues to grown in the face of the difficulties that come from farming and joys of proving up their homesteads.
Town of "Blessing".......2001-05-12
Book 3 in Red River of the North opens with Penny writing to the absent Hjelmer who has fled the area to avoid a "shotgun wedding" trick. Even though he is young and immature, he is a hard worker with an eye for the future and inside information on the plans of the railroad. Kaaren delivers twins, nearly dying. One twin is not healthy and Lars cannot accept his deaf daughter. School is in full swing in the prairie schoolhouse, with Kaaren as teacher.
Ingeborg and Haaken travel a far distance by train to escort home the seriously injured younger sister of Kaaren. Solveig is a bitter, disappointed young woman who was on her way to join her sister, but whose future is crushed in a train wreck. Face scarred and barely walking, she goes home with Ingeborg and Haaken. Olaf, Kaaren's long lost uncle, mysteriously turns up after a long absence and his many talents make him useful and loved.
Penny has finally decided to travel to Fargo for work and further schooling. The farms continue to progress - a large wooden barn now graces the homestead of Ingeborg who gives birth to another baby, Haaken's first biological child. Metiz continues to weave in and out of the lives of the pioneer families. Her grandson, Baptiste, stays with his friend Thorliff to go to school and help with the farm work.
As much as she balks, Ingeborg gives up her plowing and hunting after teaching young Thorliff to take her place. As usual, tragedy does not pass over them without leaving scars. A tragic fire, blizzards and failing farms cause loss of life and dreams. Agnes give birth to a stillborn daugher. She harbors intensive anger toward Hjelmer for hurting her dear niece, Penny.
The railroad is coming and the time for proving up their land arrives. Both the Bjorkland widows are remarried with families. Extra people share both homes now. A large sack house stores their grain for direct loading on the train.
The book ends with their town becoming a water stop for the railroad, a real town with a real name, Blessing. In spite of the author's confusion with family relationships and forgetting Kaaren's married name, book 3 still deserves 4 stars.
This you cannot put down!.......1999-09-05
Those pioneers are sooo brave! I wish I could be like them. Lauraine is an excellent author. Keep it up!
This was a really terrific book !.......1998-07-24
This book was just as excellant as the first two. Ingeborg Bjorklund looks back at all the labor the first four years of taming the new land have brought her. Hjelmer her brother-in-law has traveled west to work on the railroad and he only sends one letter to Penny who is waiting back home for him. Penny is trying to keep her promise but there are other eligible gentlemen waiting. The homesteaders must still trust God to get through their struggles. This was an excellant book and I highly recommend it for any reader craving a good fiction book!!!
Book Description
Ever so slowly Dakota Territory is being transformed from a vast prairie into rich farmland. With the coming of the railroad, the small town of Blessing begins to prosper, and the Bjorklund family is reaping the promised harvest that had lured them from their beloved home in Norway. But for Ingeborg and Haakan, realizing their dreams will not come without a struggle. After their own fields are harvested, Haakan and the neighboring men take the steam engine and the separator on the road, threshing for other homesteaders in return for a portion of their grain. With Haakan away and the fields standing idle, Ingeborg frets over work yet to be done. Fearing an early change of seasons, she takes matters into her own hands. Has the land become more important to Ingeborg than her own family?

The Reapers Song.......2005-08-16
Very good book. I love this series. Lauraine Snelling moves the characters lives along in each book, while adding new ones as well. She makes you care for the Bjorklund family and worry about their future.
Great book, great series...Period........2003-05-24
I have read all the books in this series and all the books in the sequel series. Ms. Snelling is one of my favorite authors and this is one of my favorite books. I have rad every book numerous times and would recommend them for anyone. Ms. Snelling knows real-life situations that pertained to the late 1800s and writes about them. I personally believe "A reader from Alberta, Canada" must have only skimmed the book and I suggest that she get her facts straight.
Another great book!.......2003-04-08
This is a sad book at times, but it brings out the truths of life for the homesteaders. Although I wish Ingeborg would get her baby, I also know that her situation was very real for many women. Alberta, Canada hasn't read this book because she doesn't know what she is talking about at all. It's a great book in a great series, I love them all.
Enter southern drawlin' Zeb McCallister.......2001-05-19
Even though I felt book 4 was just a bit dragging at times, it kept my interest because it built on the life of Hjelmer. There is finally a blacksmith and a merchantile in town. Penny's only known relative comes to join her. Haaken contracts mumps as they spread throughout the families, and the Bjorkland matriarch arrives with 4 others for vacationing -or is it a move?
A very dramatic incident occurs when Anner, an angry farmer, has a farm accident.
During a 6 wk absence of her husband and against all advise including his, Ingeborg returns to her britches and plowing and has a freak though serious accident. Zeb MacCallister, a fugitive caring for orphans Manda and Deborah, joins the prairie families. Manda talks too much.
Blessing women are discussing the possibility of women's votes and the fact their area is about to become a state. Katy and Zeb are extremely attracted but speak completely different languages.
A bank is opening, several weddings take place, and near the end of the book Zeb sees his siter momentarily and gets a painful scare which forces him into an even more painful decision.
Despite a slight discrepancy in timeframes by the author, I am glad I already have purchased book 5 in this series.
very good!.......2000-10-21
After reading the review by "A reader from Alberta, Canada," I am appalled by the misinformation this person provides. Just to make sure, I went home and read the entire series, and there is NO instance where they laugh at Andrew for being naughty, and there is at least one spanking, where Andrew let the sheep out when he knew better. "Alberta, Canada" obviously has this book mixed up with something else.

Book Description
Youri, a pretty Japanese girl who just passed a college entrance exam, is ecstatic after her first kiss with her handsome childhood friend-turned-boyfriend, Himuro. Meanwhile, she starts to notice that water becomes agitated whenever she goes near it! One night, hands appear out of a puddle on the street and drag her into the water. She emerges from the water to find that she has been transported to an ancient village somewhere in the Middle East. She is then captured by armed troops and taken to the queen's palace, where she learns that the queen had her kidnapped so she can offer her blood as part of a ritual that will kill two princes in competition to inherit the kingdom.

Very good book.......2007-07-08
I love this series. The art is great, and the story is so intriguing. The author spends a lot of time to develop plots and characters. The story is inspired by historical events, and it is very attractive to young readers who are curious about the past. I will recommend it to all you that love romantic and heroic stories.
Its so hard to put down..........2007-03-31
that you should have a few volumes on hand because so far each and every cliff hanger has left me wanting more and more. I started reading this after seeing the cover artwork one day. I was just drawn to the beautiful look and had to read it. I'm glad I did because its seriously a GREAT manga with exquisite artwork. I'm in my early twenties and most of what I find is Shoujo for younger girls, which really doesn't appeal to me much. Red River is Shoujo, but its not for the younger crowd.
Its starts off with a girl named Yuri getting her first kiss from her crush, Satoshi. She is then, later, dragged into the past when they are out on their first date. From that point on the story just gets better and better. She meets a prince named Kail, who is the Third Prince of Hittite, the place in which she "travels" to. They have a rocky start but eventually warm up to each other, and gradually begin to develop a friendship and something more. I'm only up to volume five, and I don't think there is anything more I could say that wouldn't give something away.
If you like action, fantasy, and romance all thrown together, then Red River is the series for you.
A shojo title that breaks the mold in some places, conforms in others.......2007-03-25
As a history nut, I simply had to try out Shinohara's shojo take on Anatolia and Mursili II. I was well pleased to discover not only a thoroughly researched world rich with historical factuality and detail, but also a gripping and complex story line. The premise should be familiar to any manga reader, as it uses many conventions of the genre; average Japanese school-girl gets transported to a strange and distant land where she quickly forms a attraction-aversion relationship with the male lead while meanwhile discovering her own inner self and power. However, Shinohara throws in several delightful twists to the shojo standards and elevates the story away from the cliche.
Yuri, the protagonist, breaks from stereotype and actually possesses a sharp mind for politics and military tactics. It's truly delightful to see a shojo lead think on her feet. Prince Kail (the historical Mursili II), the requisite pretty-boy lethario, shows demension and depth as well, although I find his character more cliche-driven than some of the other cast members. Although the core cast remains more or less the same, all receive a good dose of personality from Shinohara -- the reader finds their stories nearly as fascinating as the main couple's.
One final note is on the pacing of Red River. I grow weary of reaching volume 15 of a series only to realize the characters have yet to evolve and the plot is stagnate. Not so for Red River; the pacing is phenomenal! Both Yuri and Kail go about several deep transformations of character as the plot progresses. Months and seasons pass, characters grow old, political tensions ebb and flow just like they did 3500 years ago. Shinohara is not afraid to trim the cast when necessary, either. It's refreshing for a shojo writer to get her hands bloody, so to say.
Overall, Red River is a surberb shojo manga that rejects the pink-and-angst saturated conventions of the genre in favor of a surprisingly deep story dotted with historic detail. (As an anecdote, my Ancient Mesopotamia professor caused me to supress giggles when she referred to Mursili II as "More-silly" to help us remember his name. Imagine Yuri teasing him with that moniker!)
Whether you enjoy time-travel, action, history or romance, Red River delivers. The art is classic shojo, but Shinohara renders Hattusa and its people beautifully. I heartily recommend this series.
a real keeper.......2007-02-28
I have been a manga reader since before the time Manga became a mainstream thing in the US. And out of all the manga that I have read, there are VERY few that I can honestly say I want to pick up and read over and over again... Red River is one of those manga. (I've already read the first 16 volumes 3 times in a row.) I like an occasional romance novel, particularly set in historical times, and if you're the kind of person who likes the same, this book is definitely for you.
The characters are wonderfully portrayed. And, while sometimes I wish I could strangle Yuri when it comes to dealing with Kail, she has some very good things going for her. She is a strong female protagonist who THINKS. She is not your typical weakling who, when thrust into impossible circumstances, can only curl into a ball and cry or hang off the neck of her man helplessly. She stands on her own two feet relatively early on in the book, determined to be more 'help' than 'hinderance' when it comes to Prince Kail, which I greatly respect about her. Of course, at the begining of the series, she has all the usual insecurities that a highschool age girl has, and it's a wonderful experience watching her grow and mature as this series progresses.
Prince Kail is pure, godly eye candy, with all the characteristics of someone you could imagine coming from this time and place. Reading about how he dodges one political intrigue and scandal after another and manages to keep his head (and Yuri's) attached will make you eat up one book after another without pausing. The experience of watching him transform from a 'girl-a-day' playboy to an 'I-only-want-this-woman' kind of man and the helpless feeling he faces with Yuri determined to return home and leave him forever, are some of the most enjoyable/heart-wrenching/hair pulling moments this series has to offer. There is not a single dull moment! Five Stars!
Awesome shojo.......2006-08-12
If you are a person who loves romantic anime...hot guys and even some twist and turns throughout a book. This book is the book for you.

After a long journey by train and then by covered wagon, the Bjorklunds finally arrive in Dakota Territory, where they settle on the banks of the Red River of the North. Proud of their heritage and sustained by their faith, they came to tame a new land.

Entertaining Read!.......2005-09-08
An entertaining read, and the author has done her homework on the life and times of people in the late 1800's. This descriptive story is about Norwegian emigrants/pioneers on their way to farm land in the the Red River Valley of North Dokota. The details of life back then are so vivid and I have fallen in love with the characters. Couldn't pick up he sequel fast enough... Enjoy!
Great reality.......2003-04-07
This was a great book with lots of reality in it. As someone who lives in this area, it makes it so real that you almost think you can go find their desendents (you can find close enough ones anyway!). Ingeborg and Kaaren face so much and come through all the more human and enjoyable as they face the prairie's hardships.
Adventure, Handship and Faith.......2001-03-29
Two young couples, each with a small child, migrate to America from Norway around 1880. They have no end of hardship and heartache. Their journey to homestead land is filled with pain. Even after they arrive, they have absolutely no idea the misery and heartbreak they will face their first full year there. It is a wonder they survive with their sanity - or do they?
This is Snelling's first book in the series Red River of the North. I am well into book two already.
Fabulous Christian frontier literature.......2000-01-11
The grueling life of this Norwegian pioneer family made me so thankful for all the blessings in my modern life. They had so few material possessions, worked so hard, endured such hardships, but yet maintained their faith in God, the most important possession anyone can have. I've read all of the books of this series, but this one stands out above them all.
Very Enjoyable.......1999-10-24
"An Untamed Land" was VERY enjoyable. It was exactly the way it was. I am sure because of the stories I've heard from my mother and her many relatives who grew up as Norwegian North Dakota farmers. Uff-da, the characters even speak Norwegian occasionally. Anyone from this heritage will get tears in their eyes and a lot of joy.

Book Description
Kail's seraglio has expanded by seven willful princesses, and Yuri is forced to take a firm stand to stop them from harassing her to death. But when the princesses start dropping dead, one after the other, all the evidence points to Yuri as the murderer! Yuri is sure Nakia's scheming--and will-sapping black water--is behind it, but she wonders if that's all that's driving the real culprit to commit these heinous crimes. How will Yuri uncover the truth and expose the perpetrator without casting even greater suspicion on herself?
Customer Reviews:
Girl Fight!.......2007-05-13
In this volume Yuri faces several princesses who have joined Kail's seragilo. Kail wishes to make Yuri his wife, but first Yuri must show that she can run the seragilo without anyone's help. The princesses cross the line when they threaten Kail's security and peace of mind, and Yuri quickly handles the situation after learning, from Kail's ex, why Kail has never dismissed her. It is also made clear just how much the Hittite Empire worships their beloved Ishtar as the Empire fears for her health. This series is a must-read for fans of both manga and history.
Red River can be considered one of the best mangas.......2007-01-13
Now I stumbled on Red river by accident and sure am happy that I did. It is a great story and it makes it very difficult for you to put the book down once its in your hands. The story has so many twists and turns that I can honestly it will be unbearable waiting for the next volume to come out because every Red river manga ends in a cliff hanger.
Yuri is a girl from the present world that gets dragged into the past literally. She meets Prince Kail and becomes the admiration of all man. She is a ver ygood model of what a woman should strive for. Not only is she kind but she is also strong and just. She teaches the hittites much including the New King Kail.
I don't want to give anything away but I just want you all to know how really great this story is and it would not be a waste in buying the series.
I hope this review was helpful.
Sex, Lies, and Harem Intrigue.......2006-11-06
In this volume of Red River, Yuri is being tormented by five of the seven princesses that vie for the honor of being Kail's Queen. Yuri overcomes these petty, immature power plays, but then the princesses start to get murdered one by one with the signs all pointing to Yuri. Nakia of course is involved and the search for the real killer takes up most of the volume. Finally the killer is found, but Yuri is now in the clutches of one of Kail's trusted generals that has been brainwashed by Nakia. What will happen next. Volume 15 is great because you get to see the power plays that take place within a harem, a spicy scene between Kail and Yuri, and a flashback pic to see Kail and Zannanza as little Princes. I can't wait till the next volume.

the different sides of the Civil War Red River Campaign.......2007-06-05
A Union force of some 42,000 troops and over 100 vessels campaigned in areas of Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas in an attempt to take Shreveport, LA, headquarters of the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department. Though geographically on the periphery of the warfare and not much covered at the time by newspapers concentrating on events surrounding the Union and Confederate capitols in the East and in the upper part of the Mississippi River surrounding the strategically important cities of Chattanooga and Vicksburg, the Red River Campaigns, as they are called, brought widespread changes to this region and had adverse effects on the careers of several high-ranking officers. Against the Union force of tens of thousands, the Confederates could bring together only 25,000 men, with no more than 12,000 in action in any one engagement. With the help of an inhospitable terrain and dissensions among Union officers, and despite dissensions within their own ranks, the Confederates held off the Union army and navy. Documents from veterans associations, official reports, and diaries by soldiers of all ranks of both sides, a Frenchman who was serving in the Confederate Army, and a woman living on a plantation recreate all facets of the military, historical, and personal aspects of the Campaigns. Appendices include orders of battle for both sides and a listing of the numerous Union vessels. The volume of the publisher's Voices of the Civil War series collects and puts into perspective considerable source material on this southeastern theater of the Civil War.
