Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Tempting SEALS novella and some filler.......2007-07-30

I bought this for the Tempting SEALs continuation. Although it was just a novella, I didn't want to miss reading Maggie's story. Lora Leigh continues to heat up the pages even with a much shorter story than Dangerous Games. The rest of the short stories were just some filler material which really didn't do much for me.

5 out of 5 stars "For Maggie's Sake" by Lora Leigh.......2007-07-23

The third Tempting SEALs is a novella, "For Maggie's Sake". Maggie, a new widow who was introduced at the end of "Dangerous Games" (Tempting SEALs #2), had once dated Joe Merino, the top DEA agent who led Morganna's team in "Dangerous Games". After months of recently divorced Joe telling Maggie that he would never commit to or love a woman again, she finally took him seriously when he showed up at a society event she was covering for her newspaper with a stacked blonde female stranger on his arm. Maggie hadn't even known he was planning on attending. She got the message, and removed herself completely from his life -- even though he wasn't done with her yet. But she stood fast, trying to protect her broken heart, and six months later she got married, even though she doubted the wisdom of that step when her fiance told her a couple of days before the wedding that Joe Merino was his best friend. She was very lonely, though, and she felt she could come to love the nice man her fiance had portrayed himself as, so she went through with it.

It was the biggest mistake she ever made. She couldn't even leave her husband; she found that out three months into the marriage when she tried to and discovered he had damaging information about her father from his youthful years, and her husband was more than willing to blackmail her into staying with him. Now, two years later, with her husband dead and proven to be a U.S. traitor, she found herself under suspicion of being her husband's accessory -- because he had left journals behind saying that she was. Unfortunately, not only was Maggie completely innocent of all the suspicions being held against her, she also discovered, after a week in Joe's company in a remote safe house, that not only did she still love Joe, but she had never stopped. And Joe was one of the agents who thought she was lying about her lack of involvement with her husband's treacherous activities. To put the icing on the cake, the cartel to whom her husband had been feeding information thought she was lying, too...and they desperately wanted to get their unfriendly hands on her.

Note: Although, as usual, this is a sexually explicit Lora Leigh story, Joe is not into BSDM, unlike Clint in Tempting SEALs #2.

Check out the others in the Tempting SEALs series: The novella "Reno's Chance" in Honk If You Love Real Men (Tempting SEALs, Book 1); the novel Dangerous Games (Tempting SEALs, Book 2) and the novel Hidden Agendas (Tempting SEALs, Book 4).

Loved this and I really liked the lora leigh book. She writes some very steamy scences.

5 out of 5 stars Four Wonderful Stories by four great Authors!.......2007-05-12

All four of these stories are wonderful. I bought the book because of Lora Leigh. Love the Tempting Seals Stories, Love her books. The other 3 stories were an added bonus, all great.

4 out of 5 stars four fun lighthearted contemporary romances .......2007-02-11

"His Body Electric" by Carrie Alexander. The storm shut down Karen's phone sex business Cock-A-Doodle. It also brought Tomzak to her farmhouse seeking shelter. The attraction is electric.

"Bed and Breakfast" by Susan Donovan. High strung corporate executive Kate left Los Angeles for a spiritual retreat in the New Mexico desert. However, she arrives just before a torrent occurs only to find the Windwalker Lodge closed for renovation. Jorey allows her to stay, but he soon teaches her more on the impact of the spirit of the flesh has on the mind.

"For Maggie's Sake" by Lora Leigh. Joe believes the woman he loved and lost two years ago is involved with a dangerous drug lord who has killed some Navy SEALs. He reassesses his belief when his Maggie is abducted.

"Siren's Call" by Lori Wilde. When her grandfather broke his hip, Annie comes home to St. Augustine to keep his dive shop afloat. As she expects to return to Manhattan, diving instructor Duncan enters the shop. He knows he made the mistake of his life when he decided he was not good enough for his beloved Annie and ended their fling. Now he has a second chance to rectify his error.

These are four fun lighthearted contemporary romances starring reasonably developed likable protagonists.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent text.......2007-05-19

I purchased this text because I am trying to redirect my career. I have a lot of marketing and public relations in my background, but technical writing is a new area. I found the text easy to read, very informative, and exceptionally helpful. The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars is that it is weighted for web writers. Writing for the web is not a function of the job I am interviewing for, so that information, while interesting, was not particularly helpful for me.

2 out of 5 stars Enshrines mechanics of mediocre technical writing.......2007-04-28

This book is a mixed bag at best, advocating practices that help keep today's technical writing mired in mediocrity. For example: always use the 2nd person; and for heaven's sake don't try to explain anything to people, just tell them what to do! Much of this reads like tips for helping non-writers get by as technical writers, and for making technical writing into a kind of non-writing.

For devotees of the Jackson Pollock school of tech writing (throw lots of vetted statements at the page till they stick) or of the everything-is-a-numbered-list technique, there's probably much that's heartening in this glossy example of bad desktop publishing. (Jeesh, who decreed that tech writers can't learn typography and basic functional layout, or maybe hire someone that does?)

This book is probably ok for anyone writing product assembly manuals, or documenting GUI interfaces (press this, select that... yup second person actually works pretty well there). But for software? Or for anyone struggling to articulate complex ideas or just write a reasonably compact and self-contained conceptual overview (MIA from most tech writing today), there isn't much help here. Maybe it's time we technical writers focused more on good writing per se, on the things that good technical writing shares with effective prose (clarity, precision, range of useful styles, fiction (point of view) or even poetry (compression, effective use of embedded metaphor).

So, yeah, it turns out there're so many other rich directions and ideas for tech writers to pursue. For starters, there're the old standbys: Strunk and White or Wm Zinsser's Writing Well. And any of the wonderful books on prose style by Richard Lanham or perhaps Mark Turner's Clear and Simple as the Truth (which, suprisingly enough, addresses technical writing directly, albeit briefly, offering a number of classical examples). Also just about any of Edward Tufte's books, and by the way, did you catch his 2004 interview in Technical Communications Quarterly? Posted (free) on ET's website. I think it even mentions a time when he consulted with IBM about their tech writing and tried to get them to stop using the second person, and, well...

5 out of 5 stars To master technical writing.......2007-02-12

I have been a technical writer for years. This book has made me re-think how I write technical articles. It is excellent. It has clear, concise instruction and examples. If you are planning to learn more about how to create technical writing this is the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Found on the Subject!.......2005-11-01

I've been developing retail software professionally for over 15 years and have been waiting for a book like this one. When I finally discovered the book, I was a little skeptic -- that is until I received the book.

If you are writing help, or any other technical documentation, this *is* the book for you. Coverage of the subject is just right. It's not too overloaded and it's not to light on the subject either.

The only thing missing that I wish they had was recommended templates for different types of documentation. If this book had a CD with samples, it would be worth 2 or 3 times the amount I paid for it.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most complete writing style guides available.......2004-09-01

When I first started reading this book, I was quite impressed at the amount of detail provided in it. Although any style guide will provide a technical writer with most of the information needed to write effective manuals, this book goes into more detail about the "art" of technical writing than any other book I've read.

There is truly a wealth of excellent information in this book. The authors have covered virtually every aspect of writing technical manuals and also for online material, making this an excellent guide to refer to anytime a writing question comes up. From the beginning chapter (Quality technical information), through chapters on Accuracy, Completeness, Clarity, Style, Organization, and Retrievability (to name a few), you can clearly see this book's attention to detail. The book's last chapter (Reviewing, testing, and evaluating technical information) offers tips on doing review cycles, who to involve in them, usability tests, and evaluating the information contained in the manual.

I especially liked the chapter on Retrievability. As the book points out, information doesn't do the reader any good if there isn't a logical way to find it. This chapter points out ways to "facilitate" navigation, by providing a complete index, the proper level of detail in the Table of Contents, even helpful links (for online material).
Another excellent chapter was the one on Style, although clearly each chapter in this book stands out on its own for providing detailed information about the chapter topic.

Another nice feature of this book is that the beginning of each chapter lists the main points (or topics) to be covered, and then summarizes them at the chapter's end. It serves as an excellent reminder of these points and one that can be referred back to.

I found this book to be an excellent reference and recommend it to any technical writer, regardless of their experience level.

Book Description

This book offers a unique approach to one of the most pressing problems of our time. Child psychologist, Dr. Jerry Wilde, speaks directly to children and adolescents in a language they can easily understand. Hot Stuff to Help Kids Chill Out is an empowering book designed to encourage today's youth to manage their anger rather than be controlled by it.

Customer Reviews:

Although Amazon.com lists this 58 page book as for young adults, young children have appreciated having this book read to them. The title is a good example of the style used by this a child psychologist as he speaks to children and teens. With children and teens or young adults, I suggest reading and discussing it together. There are some pointers for older adults as well.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff is Hot Stuff.......2005-11-23

What a wonderful book. I read the reviews here before purchasing and my only reservation was with the "sarcastic" humor in the book. Actually, it is the humor that makes this book work. It was the bait that got my son hooked on the book.

I bought this for my 8 year-old son. He started to read it immediately. The book is a book and a workbook where you do some introspection. When he saw there were places to write down his responses, he ran and got a pencil. The first day he (we) spent nearly an hour reading and answering questions before we told him he needed to put it down and go to bed.

The book does a good job of validating the feelings that a child (actually all of us) has and gives great ways to deal with those responses. If you have ever encouraged your child to say "gooz fah bah" (from Anger Management the movie), then this is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars I Wanted To Like This More, But...........2004-09-01

This book was difficult to use with elementary age children, especially those who are K-4th grade. Some of the sarchastic humor and tongue-in-cheek humor was very tough for younger children and/or kids with lower intellectual functioning. When I tried to use this several times with kids; the concepts did not engage them and seemed to go above their heads. I would also like this book more if it was sectioned off in short activities and lessons.
Although I do not have any teenage clients at this time; I imagine that this book would work very well with adolescents. I will continue to try and use this book, however. It may just be my current caseload that is not responding....

3 out of 5 stars Needs some modifications!.......2004-07-13

I bought this book for two preteen boys I provide skill/therapy sessions with. It was hard for them to understand some of the sarcastic humor in the book - however if this had been left out it would have been a great book for them. Ideal for a parent, or professional to spark conversation with children.

Stuart shows you that money is merely a form of energy - and that the difference between having it and not having it is merely a small but subtle shift in consciousness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stuart Wilde Devotee.......2007-10-01

I have been a follower of Stuart Wilde for many years and his approach to life absolutely works. Having read all his books I am now buying additional copies to give to friends. Remember, Life Was Never Meant To Be A Struggle.

5 out of 5 stars Manifesting Wealth is a form of Art.......2007-08-27

This author completely changed my life, since I was 15. I am 23 years old now and am benefiting greatly from his incredible insights that have turned my life around in ways that cannot ever fill a measly paragraph. I have embraced his principles regarding manifestation, and I have to say, it's a tricky process, depending on the type of person you are, but Stuart Wilde explains how simplistic it really is....however, it's still tricky nonetheless, the gist of it all is using a force to be in your favor. Harness that, everything comes right to you as long as your energy can sustain it, for "if all the wealth in the world were distributed evenly, we'd all be millionaires''. This is a a key concept to keep in mind. I guess you can tell by now how much I read his books, after all, there IS something to them if you keep your mind open. See for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Negative overwhelms the positive........2007-06-06

This book was originally purchased about 5 years ago, then packed away. Three things I remembered about it were: the woman who won the lottery, picking up coins every time you find them, and the negative comments about Mother Theresa. I came across it the other day and decided to read it again. However, I'm in a very different place now than I was then. This time I had to stop about half way through and it ended up in the trash.

Although he presents some interesting ways to think about money, the caustic, negative, sarcastic examples, comments and put-downs thrown in here, there and everywhere became a headache to read. For someone who sprinkles his chapters with the words God-force, spirit, spiritual, etc., as though it's where he's coming from, such negativity is incongruous. He also throws out the words metaphysical, occult and energy in ways that seemed shallow to me, as if they might make his book intriguing to some and give some weight to his opinions. It bothered me how often he put something over on someone as an example to do the same. How does any of this contribute to a better life? It doesn't when you understand, through awareness and experience, that your thoughts and feelings determine your experiences. Even he admits that. He wrote a lot about the importance of feelings, but ignored how discouraged and uncomfortable someone might feel reading the kind of remarks he makes about others. It seems that he doesn't have a clue, or doesn't care.

There are also inconsistancies. For example, after mouthing off about how bad the System is, he says that you are required to join it to make lots of money. He says you don't have to work hard for money, then turns around and says that increasing and keeping it takes more time, effort and work than most are willing to do. And he seems to look down his nose at those who aren't willing to invest in the effort to be in with the movers and shakers of the financial world. He suggests that someone who doesn't have what HE says it takes maybe wants only a "little" more than what they have now. This kind of opinionated arrogance isn't helpful for those who desire their own individual level of wealth.

For anyone who wants to bring in their wealth through creativity instead of competition, I suggest "The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace Wattles. (Some might prefer an updated version.) It's principles are practical, and it is written in a positive, encouraging, and uplifting way. Applying these ideas does make the kind of difference in your life that begins to bring you in sync with the level of wealth you want. It has made a huge difference in mine.

Stuart Wilde also points out the importance and endurance of quality, but his book isn't anywhere near that caliber.

5 out of 5 stars This is My #1 All-Time Best Read.......2006-12-26

This book, The Trick to Money Is Having Some, is THE BOOK that turned my financial life around 180 degrees. From broke and homeless to affluent (and a homeOWNER). I can't say enough about this book, other than read it ASAP....Mike Stokes

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-09-25

This book is not a get-rich-quick scheme. What it can do for you, if you are open to utilizing its suggestions, is help to change the way you think about money. As the saying says, change your thinking and you change your life. What you think about and focus on becomes your reality. This book really helped me to not only understand in terms of knowledge, but in terms of wisdom, that money is just energy like EVERYTHING ELSE. It is only as important as the value we place on it. This book can open your eyes to a good look at the limiting beliefs surrounding your relationship with money. It's up to you to heal the riffs, but in my opinion, this book is a good start.

A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

Book Description

Oscar Wilde brings his enormous gifts for astute social observation and sparkling prose to The Picture of Dorian Gray, his dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. This dandy, who remains forever unchanged—petulant, hedonistic, vain, and amoral—while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years, has been horrifying, enchanting, obsessing, even corrupting readers for more than a hundred years.

Taking the reader in and out of London drawing rooms, to the heights of aestheticism, and to the depths of decadence, The Picture of Dorian Gray is not only a melodrama about moral corruption. Laced with bon mots and vivid depictions of upper-class refinement, it is also a fascinating look at the milieu of Wilde’s fin-de-siècle world and a manifesto of the creed “Art for Art’s Sake.”

The ever-quotable Wilde, who once delighted London with his scintillating plays, scandalized readers with this, his only novel. Upon publication, Dorian was condemned as dangerous, poisonous, stupid, vulgar, and immoral, and Wilde as a “driveling pedant.” The novel, in fact, was used against Wilde at his much-publicized trials for “gross indecency,” which led to his imprisonment and exile on the European continent. Even so, The Picture of Dorian Gray firmly established Wilde as one of the great voices of the Aesthetic movement, and endures as a classic that is as timeless as its hero.

Dorian Gray has just had his portrait painted. It is a perfect likeness of the quite extraordinary beautiful young man, and it prompts him to make a mad wish for eternal youth. In the years to come, he devotes his public life to and aestheticism-and his private one to decadence and debauchery.

5 out of 5 stars The American Psycho of a bygone era?.......2007-09-26

Having only recently read American Psycho, I couldn't help but think back to The Picture of Dorian Gray. Placed within the context of its time, I feel certain that this book would have been the American Psycho of its day. What a great pity that Oscar Wilde only wrote this one novel! This compelling story has haunted me since I first saw it on film as a young man (the book is better of course). I've given copies of the novel to many friends, and I can heartily recommend it as a great read to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

I would imagine that there is not a very large chance you would find
this book in the waiting room of any plastic surgeon's office. An
example of a story that suggests be careful of what you wish for. A
young man makes a deal to keep himself young and youthful looking.
Unfortunately there is a secret associated with this that is hard to
hide.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Victorian Gothic.......2007-08-29

What can capture the soul of a man?
Is there a devil's deal to be made at the crossroad?
Dorian Gray shows that great physical beauty can be a lie. Oscar Wilde in
his introductory poetry says: Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are cultivated."
One can't say that this novel is beautiful,
but there is an element of eternal truth that even in ugliness has great virtue.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-23

This story is amazing, Dorian Gray keeps you in the book.
I read this book in high school and now I decided to buy it and read it again.

3 out of 5 stars Not all that I expected..........2007-07-30

This novel is one which everyone has heard of and many are compelled to read it as part of school curriculum. I never did, but thought I would give it a try as I really enjoy dry British wit and intelligent prose. Beyond that, I wasn't sure what else I was expecting, but for my tastes, I didn't end up entirely satisfied.

The opening 10 or 20 pages insinuated themselves into my imagination and I felt that I would be entertained by the main characters throughout the rest of the novel. The detailed descriptions of the lovely country setting and extravagant flowers gives one an impression of decadence and a high society jadedness that I somehow expected from Oscar Wilde, having read none of his previous work. Unfortunately, the remainder of the novel didn't hold as much pleasure for me.

Dorian Grey is a relatively uninteresting central character who is but a blank canvas for Lord Henry to experiment upon; Dorian's own thoughts and musings are not so compelling in and of themselves and yet we are treated to quite a few pages of them throughout. Lord Henry himself is an interesting character whose mean-spiritedness, which approaches evil in some instances, is obscured by his verbose bantering on half-baked, jaundiced observations on Victorian life. These also consume considerable paper stock, and as witty as his musings start out (his thoughts on marriage were particularly humorous to me), they start to run together and become somewhat of a misshapen lump through which I felt I was slogging at times.

Anyway, the story is relatively well known to most at this point, regardless of whether you have read the book in question or not. It progresses more or less as one might assume, which is not entirely a bad thing (I would not classify this tale as a mystery or as a horror novel, a genre to which I see it is sometimes curiously attributed). Oscar Wilde is definitely saying something here, and there seem to be many elements of allegory contained within the story. I have read that he saw parts of himself within all three of the main characters, and they do seem to represent different facets of a single personality. Unfortunately these same characters are hamstrung by this very fact, as they each seem only part of a personality, part of a character, and not well rounded or believable in their motivations or actions.

This is the first Oscar Wilde I have attempted to read, and I won't say it is my last, but there are classics of English literature which are as well written, more engrossing, and, in the end, more memorable, at least to this reader ("Silas Marner" comes to mind as a fine book I only just recently read for the first time as well).

So, overall, about 3 stars from me. In my opinion it poses some interesting questions, sparkles in a few spots, and held my attention for a few hours, but it's not something I would return to or recommend for pleasurable reading.

As a side note, I am somewhat surprised by the criticisms of the homoerotic nature of the relationships portrayed within the novel. Wilde portrayed the passionate nature of what amounts to a love triangle in a very effective (if slightly florid) way, and, as has been noted before, the relationships between the men seem more genuine and believable than those involving the fairer sex. Maybe this type of undertone would be out of place in a Hemingway novel but good grief it's Oscar Wilde! Scratch beneath the surface and read about where this man was coming from and the times in which he lived and worked.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks from Bubba.......2007-10-03

I adopted a year old dog that had been rescued by a friend from a puppy mill. Bubba was scared of the world, cowering in his crate for the first week. He was afraid of every noise, scared of every person. I bought the book,"Help For Your Fearful Dog", and proceeded to follow the suggestions of Ms. Wilde. It was slow going at first, but as each day and week progressed Bubba began to make astonishing progress. As suggested in the book, we started to school together (Bubba is on his third class)and it has made all the difference in the world. This book and its gameplan for your fearful dog works. Just ask Bubba.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Owners of Fearful Dogs.......2007-06-24

This is one of my favorite dog behavior books in the last 5 years. As a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I have been recommending this book to my clients as a complement to their training programs. They love it! They are so glad to have a resource that they can share with family members and friends to help everyone better understand their dog. Nicole Wilde does an excellent job of presenting information in a way that is easy for the average dog owner to understand, but still keeps it interesting for the professional dog trainer.

I give it 5 stars and 4 Paws up!

5 out of 5 stars I Love "Help for Your Fearful Dog"!.......2007-05-28

As a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant I have to say this is a "must have" on every professional's bookshelf as well as many dogowner's. As have many of Nicole's books in the past, this one lived up to its name. Not only is it helpful but it is written in "plain English" and with a lot of humor to boot! I now make a habit of consulting the wonderful bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter before I finish my behavior treatment plans just to make sure I haven't forgotten another great suggestion that my clients will want to try out!

I also like how Nicole delves into complementary therapies such as TTouch, aromatherapy, Flower Essences and more.

This book is well worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for dog trainers.......2005-08-08

I purchased this book when I'd already been in business as a professional dog trainer for almost 3 years; I found so much helpful information, especially regarding contracts, lesson packages, and history forms and why I needed them. There were many other miscellaneous tidbits that transformed how I run my business as a whole. This book should be on every dog trainer's book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A must read before knocking on a client's door!.......2005-07-29

So many books are geared towards training methods and theory. This one is written for trainers planning on venturing into the realm of private training. It's well written and full of useful information, much of which one might not consider prior to establishing a business and taking on that first client. Especially helpful were Nicole Wilde's chapters on phone skills and scripts. These chapters would benefit anyone who conducts dog-related interviews on the phone regardless of whether you do private training or not. Shelter staff, volunteers and anyone involved in dog rescue can improve their interview skills with this book. Also included are business resources, sample contracts and sample history questionaires. A great return on the investment spent reading this one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for trainers!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-16

I was so glad to find this book! I started out doing group classes and had wanted to do in-home training for some time but couldn't find anyone to apprentice with. I didn't have the confidence to do private lessons because even though my training skills are good, I didn't know HOW to do private lessons. This book not only gives you tests to judge whether you really are ready to do one on one training, but gives an amazing amount of information. It talks about structuring your sales, how to do a lesson from start to finish, how to handle coaching owners, and covered a ton of questions that I had been wondering about like what to do if you have to recommend euthanasia, how do I work with more than one dog in the home, and what do to if an owner just isn't getting it. One of the things I liked best (other than the book being an easy read and being written in a friendly, supportive tone) was the sections at the back that had liability contracts I could use, great handouts I could copy and give my clients, and a lot of helpful resources. This book is definitely a great resource for any trainer who wants to start to do private training and even for those who have already been doing it a while, as Wilde has a lot of great ideas and tips.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great. .......2005-05-18

The book was an easy read and was ok at best. It was not real detailed and only covered the basics. I would have liked to see some more depth in the chapters... I would say it was average.

Book Description

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition includes a glossary and reader,s notes to help the modern reader appreciate Wilde's wry wit and elaborate plot twists.

Oscar Wilde's madcap farce about mistaken identities, secret engagements, and lovers' entanglements still delights readers more than a century after its 1895 publication and premiere performance. The rapid-fire wit and eccentric characters of The Importance of Being Earnest have made it a mainstay of the high school curriculum for decades.

Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax are both in love with the same mythical suitor. Jack Worthing has wooed Gewndolen as Ernest while Algernon has also posed as Ernest to win the heart of Jack's ward, Cecily. When all four arrive at Jack's country home on the same weekend—the "rivals" to fight for Ernest's undivided attention and the "Ernests" to claim their beloveds—pandemonium breaks loose.

Only a senile nursemaid and an old, discarded hand-bag can save the day!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Wilde.......2006-12-15

Funnier and more entertaining than you ever thought reading a play could be, and absolutely more relevant now than ever, The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde at his best. Thankfully short ( you can read it in an hour or so ) and filled with brilliant, biting humor.

5 out of 5 stars Great version of the Classic Play.......2005-10-17

The Importance of Being Earnest is a fantastic play. It is an easy read, and is not only well thought out, but hilarious.

I liked this book of the play especially, because it includes helpful notes in the beginning, but more because it has a glossary of difficult terms in the back. Every time I came to a word that I did not know, it was sure to be defined in the back.

If you love theatre, this is a great play to read. I would highly suggest this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wilde's wittiest.......2005-07-14

One thing happens when you read Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest"; you are amazed to remember that this play was authored over 100 years ago. For most plays of that era, the average reader tends to lose references and it tends to be stodgy and irrelevant. Not so Earnest, due to the brilliance and imagination of it's playwright.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a tour de force of comedy, misidentifications, and farce. Algernon and Jack are friends, and each has invented an imaginary person as an excuse of getting out of engagements. Jack's person is Ernest, a brother with a wild past. The two conspire to woo the ladies that they love, and through a series of happenstances, must gently deceive to get want they want. The end result is a play of uncomperable quality, chock full of witticisms that are highly quotable out of context. In fact, I dare suggest the entire play is quotable, such its brilliance.

Wilde pulled no punches when writing Earnest. Often, when a play is filled with memorable quotes, it takes away from the realism of the scenes because the characters then become merely conduits for the writer's intellect. Not so in Earnest. Wilde manages to make the characters say exactly what they would say in each situation, true to their persona. That alone is quite an accomplishment, one not often seen.

Misidentities, witty banter, love, all conspire to one of English's most brilliant comedies ever to have seen the stage. We should be so lucky the world had Oscar Wilde in it, and even more so, that he wrote at all.

1 out of 5 stars You can't be serious.......2007-05-04

I've never written a review on amazon before but I felt compelled to warn people about the idiocy they are about the unleash upon themselves. First of all I can't believe someone who says openly that they are separated from the itellect is writing books. That confuses me. Furthermore this guy is completely off his rocker. We are all star dust? Is that a metaphor? Sadly through his incomprehensible ramblings he touches on VERY few subjects that make sennse. But overall I think this guy has seen one too many bad martial arts movies and he should probably stick to just silence and give up on the power.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-03-25

I enjoy Stuart's sense of humor and direct way of speaking. Realistically, it takes time, focus and discipline to change personal behavior patterns. I would have liked to hear more on this topic. As with ALL self-help topics, I feel it's best to focus on what parts resonate with you and discard the rest.

This is a great book with valuable information on how to keep your power. You will learn about Silent Talking, the Wisdom of Non-Action, Psychic Protection and a lot more. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Chock Full of Insights.......2006-12-19

Although "Silent Power" is a really small book, it's literally jam packed with information, insights, & ideas regarding how to create & maintain your own silent power - as well as the impact of having (and not having) this type of power in your life.

Some of the major discussions in this book include: the etheric body & how people react to us based on what we project through this energy body; psychological leaning - creating a "fake" you through the constant need of approval & ideas on how to stop "leaning"; silent communication - how to find out what's really going on with other's through inward communication; the practice of Wu Wei - accepting things as they are & not forcing life; the differences between emotions, opinions/preferences, and feelings - we can use feelings to help us determine what to do next, but opinions/preferences & emotions will likely lead us down the "wrong" path; the tell-tale physcial signs of how someone really feels (i.e. posture, eye movement, gait, etc...); how to get in touch with your "nature-self" (the energy that's a part of all things); and psychic protection - how to protect yourself from "energy vampires" - those who need to take from your energy in order to receive a boost for themselves.

Overall, I found "Silent Power" to be an insightful read, and as such I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in spirituality - it has much to offer.
