Customer Reviews:
helping hand.......2007-06-08
this is a great cd. you just listen to it and follow the instructions and can actually learn to meditate. great
breathless.......2007-04-12
This CD was recommended to me and I have heard good things about Dr. Weil, but I have to say the CD's were a let down. The lecture was too long and i thought it would have been better to simply be text. The actual breathing exercises were not that inspiring and quite short. Although it was instructional to go through the breathing exercises along with the CD it would have been better if that part was expanded.
Enjoyable and highly usable.......2006-02-24
Terrific 2 CD set - enjoyable to listen to, highly informative, short and sweet. You are on your way to using the techniques immediately. Nice addition to my "arsenal" of self-healing techniques.
Great for Beginners.......2005-11-06
I am just a beginner at Meditation, and I am trying to learn this for my health.
I think this is a good CD to listen to if you are just starting out. I got some good ideas from this recording, and I am sure I will be able to use what they taught.
Good introduction to meditation.......2005-03-29
This is a solid introduction to the practice of meditation. The first disc features Weil and Kabat-Zinn giving background information about meditation. The second disc features guided meditations. Like any spiritual practice, the more information an individual gets, the better he or she becomes at that practice. This set of discs is a good starting point that will get a person going into meditation immediately, which might lead the listener to pursue additional materials about spirituality.
Book Description
Get Ready to Run!
A complete guide to training for a half or full marathon in sixteen weeks, this book follows the format of Tom's previous book The 12-Week Triathlete with simply the best advice on how to run your fastest race while staying injury-free. Whether you are a first-time marathoner, trying to set a new "PR" or looking to qualify for Boston, this book is for you.
"TRAIN LESS AND RUN YOUR BEST"
Some worry that running a marathon will involve hours upon hours of training each week. Others fear that they will become injured. Some veteran marathoners have followed other training plans and experienced both, but Tom's approach is much different. His philosophy of "train less, run your best" will amaze you whether you are running your first marathon or fiftieth. Exercise physiologist and sports performance coach Tom Holland -- an elite endurance athlete himself and sub-3 hour marathoner who has run in more than fifty marathons, three ultramarathons, and a dozen Ironman triathlons around the world will teach you how to properly gear up and train in the sixteen weeks prior to your half or full marathon. So when that starting gun sounds, you'll be equipped with invaluable tips and techniques that will put you in position to run the best race of your life.
The Marathon Method provides you with everything you need to know including:
- Easy-to-understand advice on nutrition, hydration, and gear
- Customized training plans for beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners
- Advice on the mental side of running and how to make your mind go that extra mile
- Strategies to avoid hitting the infamous 'wall'
- Tips on pacing, injury prevention, strength training, flexibility, and much more!
Customer Reviews:
Great book with lots of practical advice...........2007-08-28
This is a very simple and straightforward book on preparing for your first marathon. It is systematic and easy to follow. If you haven't run this far before and you are intimidated, this will help you to get over it.
It may sound like a strange suggestion, but I also recommend Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline. This later book has a nice 30 day retreat in the back that will help you with your mental game. If you don't know what I mean, you will once you start running those long distances.
With respect to my background, I was an all state runner in my late teens and ran a lot of long distance events in my 20s. I also have a graduate education in physiology and biochemistry and worked with another person in training athletes in my late twenties. Since then, I have had back and neck injuries and don't do a whole lot of running. However, I'm thinking of wading back into this stream and the gentle approach put forward here seems scientifically sound, easy to follow and simple.
I had a knee injury that was chronic when I was about 12. I got into running because I had a lot of trouble walking and was overweight. Running helped me to get over this injury, restore my self confidence and realize the power of the mind and relationship between the mind and body. This is my current pursuit and passion. Literally, a doctor told my mother I wouldn't be running and would be wearing a splint, she passed away a few years ago... but she showed me the power of intention, commitment, etc. That is not to say everyone can do anything, but most of the time I believe we limit ourselves.
If you have injuries I advise you to talk to your health care provider before taking up running. It also a good idea from a cardiovascular point of view... remember Jim Fix?! However, most people who are reasonably health can run a marathon if they train systematically. Good luck on running your first... and many thereafter. I hope to do one again sometime soon as well.
My review.......2007-08-16
Just what I was looking for in terms of detail, easy-read...everything I wanted to know as a first time marathon runner.

A Makes-Sense, Can-Do Book.......2006-12-19
Marcia Ramsland is a true cheerleader for those of us who want to use time effectively and live life well. As I skimmed her book, I found myself saying, "Yes, I've done that but she has fine-tuned how to do it better" or "Her suggestion will help me in this other needy area." One strength of Simplify Your Time is how it addresses the need of both home and workplace, recognizing that what happens in one venue affects the other. Her illustrations of people who found help through her tips make the book warm and genuine. Another plus of the book is how Marcia has organized it into quickly read chapters, in recognition that people struggling with time issues simply do not have the time to read much at one sitting. She's divided her subject into four groups of "seven habits" or "seven tips" for saving time, time management, lifestyle issues, and planning for the future. In addition, 101 mini time-saving hints are scattered through the pages. As one illustration of how she simplifies time management to mini-goals, read the first chapter on punctuality and see how just deliberately changing a habit of being late will make an overall difference in lifestyle. As one with a magnet-and-memo slathered refrigerator, I need to adapt the five file folders suggestions she gives on page 29. I care for an older parent with memory loss, plus fight my own mid-life "forgetful" issues--yet was encouraged by Marcia's statement (p. 61) that our short-term memory can only hold seven items before it starts pushing things out. Hence, her excellent suggestions for making lists. I was also grateful that she included nurturing relationships (chapter 16) and suggested striving for five friendly encounters a week. When I first read her book, I didn't know that just a day later I would need the reminder of chapter 28's comments on time management during life's crises. My life changed abruptly when I slipped on ice and broke my ankle--not a good thing for someone maintaining a home business, keeping a family going, and care-giving an older parent. Any of us who want to reduce or handle better the stress that life serves up would benefit greatly from Marcia's book. The heart of her book might be her quote on p. 175: "When we're happiest, we manage time better and life is simpler." I'm all for that! Even if you feel you have a fair handle on time management, get this book to brush up your skills and then to share with someone who simply needs practical advice and encouragement.
Tip Top Time Tips.......2006-09-16
You've done it again, Marcia! Simplify Your Time is an excellent resource for people who need to stop running around in circles and wasting time and start mastering their time wisely. Love all those tips. Thanks for all you do to help us become better individuals.
My husband wants to personally thank Marcia!.......2006-09-10
I read Marcia Ramsland's "Simplify Your Time" with a pen & highlighter in hand. She has so many great, practical ideas jam-packed into an easily digestible 30-day plan. After the first week of taking her ideas and implementing them into a workable plan, my husband says he'd like to personally thank Marcia for starting us on the road to actually getting household projects done (versus the "I'll get to it someday" syndrome). I've also used many of her tips with my executive clients ~ who always have challenges juggling their time! Thanks Marcia for another great book!
Book Description
Steve Wynn is the former owner of the Bellagio — Las Vegas’s latest monument to conspicuous consumption whose hotel and casino contain over $300 million in fine art and $1.5 billion in Wall Street money. He’s a mogul whose empire at one point included the Mirage, the Golden Nugget, and Treasure Island. But how did he gain and wield his tremendous power in Nevada? And why did a confidential Scotland Yard report prevent him from opening a casino in London? When this biography, written by a local reporter, was first released in 1995, Steve Wynn brought suit against its original publisher and forced him into bankruptcy. Now available in paperback, the inside story of the biggest phenomenon to roil Las Vegas since Hoover Dam gives readers an intimate glimpse at the real business that’s conducted beyond the gaming tables.
Customer Reviews:
focuses on facts, not perceptions.......2007-07-08
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about the character of the man who is Steve Wynn. It is a true account of the way he has conducted himself over his history in Vegas and Atlantic City, not the image projected of him by Steve Wynn and his company. It is well written and concise. John L. Smith does an excellent job presenting the information, including several of the more uncanny incidents Steve Wynn has been involved in over the years by merely presenting the facts as they happened. He asks some very good questions that should have been asked but never were because of who the man is. He also points out numerous things that have been glazed over by the press and various agencies involved. Very informative. A definite must read.
Wynn Tries to Supress The Book.......2007-03-05
So damaging to his super clean image, Wynn drove the original publisher into bancruptcy and tried everything he could manage to keep this book out of circulation. Steve Wynn vs. the First Amendment (1st 1, Wynn 0).
Certainly did improve Vegas by leaps and bounds, but at what cost? Using public water to build his exclusive Shadow Creek golf course, buying art, jets and NY condos with stockholders money as the stock sank into takeover waters, untimately being shown the door by casino magnate Kirk Kerkorian. Once owned by MGM, things changed. The golf course was opened, the art, NY condo and jet all sold.
How does one man undermine Federal law to build a dolphin attraction? he is on film meeting with a known mobster who used his Atlantic City casino (Golden Nugget) to launder money, but can't seem to remember anything about it.
Fact: the son of a Bino Hall operator rises up to be one of the worlds leading casino developers and owners through some very shady associations. He influences Nevada politics as all people with money are able to, so no surprise there. The mob associations are clearly documented and associating with a convicted felon (Milken) is grounds for losing your gaming license, yet Wynn does so with impunity.
Wynn has brought some great changes to Las Vegas, but after reading the other sidie of the story, you have to ask yourself if the ends justify the means.
John L. Smith has done a great job with the facts surrounding Steve Wynn. Hat's off to him!
Inside scoop on Steve Wynn's Vegas.......2007-02-19
This book is a real page turner. It is amazing it ever got printed, given Wynn's many attempts to strangle the unflattering portrayal it in its infancy. That in itself is reason enough to pick it up and study it.
Fascinating Read.......2005-05-25
I'm not sure how true all of the "accusations" / "observations" are about the infamous Mr. Wynn, but the book is extremely well written. Paired with the "Green Felt Jungle" (another excellent book) you will be hard-pressed to put these two books down. I would recommend this book to everyone.
A true story about today's Las Vegas.......2005-05-01
(...) Steve Wynn is truly a fascinating guy and his story needs to be fully told to appreciate his diverse talents, "associations," and background. Running Scared tells the brutal truth about a facinating Vegas character. Thank goodness the mob was run out of Vegas years ago!
Book Description
One of the great pleasures of yoga is the relaxation session or shavasana traditionally offered at the end of a class. When taught skillfully, shavasana invokes the flow of energetic "nectar" down the spine to permeate the entire body with blissful energy. Now, with Drops of Nectar yoga practitioners can experience this rejuvenating dimension of yoga at home and at their convenience. Taught by acclaimed instructor Shiva Rea, this immersive two-CD program guides listeners through: Yoga Nidra, a relaxation method that works with 36 areas of the body, tension release through the five koshas (layers) of the body, a special meditation for healing areas of pain and blockage, Lunar Shavasana - an effective means to rest the sense organs and induce deep and restful sleep, and "Awakening the Lotus" chakra-based meditation, and more.
Customer Reviews:
extremely relaxing!.......2007-03-11
I'm new to whole world of yoga and decided to purchase this CD collection based on amazon reviews. I use this CD everyday for meditation and relaxation. Shiva Rea has a very soothing voice with beautiful music in the back ground to accompany her. If you are looking for a very well rounded collection, this is a good bet. Once again, I'm always so pleased with Amazon - they're so helpful in making an informed decision on new purchases!
Drops of Nectar Shiva Rea C.D. Review.......2006-08-15
I can't put into words how truly wonderful this c.d. is.
So much to inspire, relax, and rejuvenate.
The moon salutation is too beautiful for words. Just a really
good c.d.
I would recommend this to anyone. Buy this c.d. set. You won't be sorry.
Drops of Preciousness. Absolutely Lovely!!!.......2005-01-10
This is my first Shiva Rea CD and I love it! I have been using her new DVD called Yoga Shakti and decided to try this CD after thoroughly loving her DVD :o) 2 CDs and a 14-page study guide are included.
You have your choice of two Chandra Namaskar sessions. (Moon Salutation. Similar to Sun Salutations, but slower and renewing.) One is 15-min and the other 11-min. I do them together. This CD doesn't include a lot of yoga postures, but is a wonderful compliment to either the Chandara Namaskar's included or your own yoga practice.
Included on disk one is a 15-min. breathing session called Nadi Shodhana Pranayama. There are just enough verbal instructions (even for beginners), but not too much. Oh, and by the way, the music is absolutely beautiful throughout the CD. So many meditation CD's do not include music. Speaking of meditation, you get a 17-min Meditation along with 3 different Shavasana's (6-min., 7-min, and 13-miin) and a 19-min. Yoga Nidra session.
I haven't tried the Tennis Ball massage session yet, but from the previous reviewer it sounds lovely too. You can't go wrong with this purchase whether you're new to yoga, mediation, and breath work or someone with years of experience. Shiva Rea's voice is very soothing and her instructions are very clear and not too lengthy so you can enjoy the beautiful music.
I'm so glad to discover Shiva Rea's works. I look forward to trying her other CD's and any new DVD's that are released. Namaste'
It is not the same as Yoga Sanctuary.......2004-09-05
I was expecting More of the same from Yoga Sanctuary and was a little disappointed!! I still use the Shavasana on it, in order to have some quite time after my Yoga practice. Even if it is the Invocations.
Pure Bliss.......2003-12-01
Shiva Rea--I can't wait to see what she comes out with next! On the first CD, first track is a moon salutation--Chandra Namaskar, beautiful, honoring women and the female aspect of divinity. I do this salutation 2-3 times on the days when I my body is telling me it doesn't want to be put through a vigorous power yoga workout. When done, I find I am warmed up and stretched out very nicely! I then started teaching it to my students and they loved it also--they consider it like reciting poetry while doing yoga. The tennis ball massage is also the greatest--these two tracks mentioned above make this CD worth buying but the rest of the tracks on the album are a treat also-relaxing savasanas, meditation and poetry with Shiva's beautiful, soothing voice.

A Year with Rumi: Daily Readings
ASIN: 1564558320 |
Book Description
In the seven centuries since the death of Jelaluddin Rumi in 1273, the world has come to know and thrill to his sacred poetry. In concert with the tabla and sitar, his writing is part of a religious tradition that is believed to excite "spiritual heroism," embracing the holiness of love, lamentation, battle, and the longing for God. RUMI: VOICE OF LONGING collects nearly one hundred of Rumi's most memorable quatrains, presented here on two superbly remastered CD recordings for the first time ever.
Translated and performed by the Rumi scholar Coleman Barks, these works echo with a spiritual complexity that defies their outward simplicity. As Sufism acknowledges the truth of other religions, so does Rumi's poetry reflect universal themes: the search for the highest truth, the mystery of surrender, the longing to overcome ego imprisonment. RUMI: VOICE OF LONGING captures the silence, the love, and the playfulness that make each experience with this work one of sacred wonder.
With musical accompaniment by Marcus Wise on tablas and David Whetstone on sitar. Special appearance by Robert Bly.
Customer Reviews:
Glorious mystic poetry.......2007-07-24
Wonderful Rumi poetry as read by Coleman Barks who is my special favourite Rumi translator. Words to open the heart and make the spirit sing.
Grating.......2007-05-26
It gets two stars for unintentional hilarity (refer to some of the more embarrasing moments in the career of one Robert Goulet). Cast somewhere between the imploring musings of Deepak Chopra and his collaborations with 'celebs' like Demi Moore professing 'transcendence, if only one would aspire', the dictor here, is infused with a monotonous Southern accent that unfortunately renders Rumi as prosaic humdrum.
Loud.......2007-05-20
Coleman Barks is my favorite translator of Rumi but this CD is not. Maybe it will work for the seasoned Rumi lover but for a new person I found Coleman having to rush to speak over the music. I couldn't enjoy the poetry because of the drums and fast paced music. I have no relationship yet with Rumi's poetry and just could not enjoy all the distractions. If you already know the poems the loud music may suit you. I was glad when it ended which is not what I was looking for. It didn't let me pace through the poetry, the loud drums and sitar were too forceful.
Can't read Rumi all the time.......2005-10-03
Though I agree Coleman Barks Southern accent and voice are a out of place for me when reading Rumi myself, his passion for Rumi more than makes up for it. I am in my car a lot, so this set allows me to enjoy the poetry. It's relaxing, the music is perfect.
A spiritual but earthy sound.......2005-08-08
On this lovely recital of Jelaludin Rumi's poetry, the voice of Coleman Barks is accompanied by Marcus Wise on sitar and David Whetstone on sitar. There is a flute too, but nobody is credited. The 2-CD set contains translations of poems from the following books of translations by Barks: Birdsong, Say I Am You, One-Handed, Open Secret, We Are Three, This Longing, These Branching Moments and Delicious Laughter. The insert lists the first lines of the all the poems recited.
Disc One: 1. Birdsong brings relief 2. This is how I would die 3. Soul of the world 4. Again, the violet bows to the lily 5. Intricate sounds, not words, I catch 6. You said, "Who's at the door?" 7. The soul must suffer secrets 8. I saw grief drinking a cup of sorrow 9. In this river the soul is a waterwheel.
Disc Two: A sufi was wandering the world 2. Love comes with a knife, not some shy question 3. Someone may be clairvoyant, able to see 4. Last night my teacher told me the lesson of poverty 5. On Resurrection Day your body testifies against you 6. Someone says, sanai is dead 7. Those full of fear are not really on the way 8. We tremble, thinking we're about to dissolve 9. Before Muhammed appeared in physical form 10. I, you, he, she, we 11. There is no prison so dark and small 12. Moses heard a shepherd on the road praying.
The combination of devotional playing and the deep voice of Barks create a type of spiritual ambience that is more earthy than ethereal. I find the sound most relaxing and enjoyable, a fitting vehicle for the inspiring words of Rumi.
Total running time for Disc 1 is 70:08 and for Disc 2, 77:33.

Customer Reviews:
excellent advice for any runner.......2007-03-13
I'm about 3/4 of the way through this book and the advice that Matt supplies is extremely eye opening. I never knew drinking during your workout was so important.
This book is written from a very down to earth point of view. I felt like a coach or a friend was giving me advice. After reading most of this book I went ahead and ordered both the EFS (formerly E3 as mentioned in the book) sports drink and the Ultragen recovery drink. I'm completely convinced by Matt's detailed explanations that these products are really targeted to maximize your body's needs.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is an avid runner. It will help you understand how certain foods and nutrition can help your body as a runner.
What but not How.......2007-02-15
Fitzgerald offers a good overview of various nutrients and their role in race performance. The short coming of this book is that it doesn't offer specific menu plans. Great title, just falls a little short of being truly helpful.
Must have for serious "amature" runners.......2007-01-18
I found this book a great asset to my running training. Matt Fitzgerald does a great job of explaining the reasons for the different enegy sources. He also tells how to get the proper amounts of protien from more that just meat sources. I'm only an "hobby" runner for fitness & health (to maintain a 100# wt loss) but this book made me feel like I could do more than I thought I could. I was hoping to cut 30-45 mins off my time. After reading and applying the info in this book I was able to fule myself for my 2nd marathon good enough to cut 58 minutes of my 1st marathon's time. I was able to run harder during the marathon (I had a faster 2nd half) & recovered better after it. It's easy to read & understand. I'm glad it's part of my fittness library.
Very useful.......2006-12-30
I found this book to be very useful in more ways than one. It was extremely helpful in educating me on the advantages and disadvantages of the different sports drinks and recovery formulas available to long distance runners. I also found that it motivated me to eat a healthier diet in general. While much of the general dietary information was stuff that I already knew, some of it was not.
I have significantly changed the way I eat as a result of reading the book, and I regularly recommend it to friends whether they run or not.

No training plans included.......2005-09-04
I picked up this book after reading Higdon's training plan's online.
The book is mostly a collection of phrases and anecdotes. Granted, Mr Higdon has run successfully for a long time, but there's very little new advice here.
He outlines, in many way, the way he approaches speed work.
But after I read it twice, the only thing I can remember is "don't do too much speedwork" and "vary your training".
I was expecting more advice on form and specific speed workout plans, but I have to look elsewhere.
I think your running will be better if you do it with correct form. But after reading the "other" runner guru Jeff Galloway's book and this one, I can safely say that they don't discuss form that much.
One chapter talks about stretching and drills to improve flexibility, which I found interesting.
The front cover says "training plans for 5K, 10K...". That's not true. There are no training plans in this book. Find them online instead.
I suggest ChiRunning by Danny Dreyer if you want tips on better form.
Terrific For Beginner or Intermediate Runner.......2002-03-24
This book touches on training techniques generally for all races under a half marathon. It includes advice to keep a runner injury-free while improving times in the shorter races.

Alberto Salazar's Guide to Road Racing.......2006-11-10
I usually like the running books with a 12 or 16 week schedule pre written for you so was wondering if Salazar's book would be well suited for me, in that I would have to write my running schedule myself. After reading his book, I found his advice easy to follow and the rule's of thumb's that he recommends are very helpful when you feel like deviating from your schedule since you now know the range to work within. Great Running Book.......2004-10-26
This is my favorite running book by far. Alberto Salazar is obviously trying to convey the best information he can to the reader and he does a great job. The book is weak in the area of training schedules but strong on virtually everything else. Most of the book has been useful to me on a daily basis. The only real complaint I have is that the author, like many of the older elite runners , does not personally do as much stretching as he recommends for the reader, does not use a heart rate monitor, etc. But he, as a coach, recommends it to other runners while not having a whole lot of personal experience and it shows. I use both so sometimes I read between the lines. He also does not understand cycling and its effect on the runner. A not uncommon malady among runners.
Great Resource.......2004-06-01
I'm a novice runner wanting to take it to the next level and needed some advise and inspiration. I found that I was doing several things wrong and I have made major improvements in my running since buying the book. I now have a plan of action for continued improvement, and this book can take me there and beyond.
This book is quick and simple to read and covers all the basics, plus more. It's been extremely helpful.
Great resource book for all road runners: beginners & elite.......2004-02-06
Since Alberto Salazar was a former world-class runner
himself, before retiring from competitive running, this
book is definitely worth checking out. It also helped that
elite runners like Bill Rodgers and Mary Decker Slaney also
had positive comments regarding this book.
This book is useful because it takes you from preparing
race, the race itself, and the post-race routines. It also
discusses injuries, and how to deal with them, and other
associated topics, like the psychological aspect of running,
and basics like weight training, crosstraining and nutrition.
If you're a beginner or even a veteran runner, you will
find useful advice, because there was a few things I picked
up in this book that I don't recall seeing in other running
books, and viceversa. If I had a complaint, is that it only
had a sample training schedule for someone training for their
first marathon, not including his own elite schedule when he
was running 120 miles or more weekly. This schedule was not
of any use to me, because my weekly training mileage already
exceeds the highest weekly mileage suggested in the book.
However, despite this, it is well worth the investment,
if you plan to enter a road race at some point in the future.
The topics are logically organized in a chronological fashion
that makes the book easy and simple to read. FYI, if you want
a sneak peek, here's a look at the Table of Contents, and you
can decide if this book is for you or you can take a pass and
look for another book that will fit your goals more suitably.

All in all, this book is fairly easy and fast to read. You
could probably finish the book in 4-5 hours, since there
are diagrams, charts, and other detailed information. It's
nearly 300 pages, but a person could probably polish it
off in a weekend or less if they devote a couple of hours
or so each day.
Alberto Salazar's Guide to Road Racing.......2003-05-20
An excellent and complete review of this book was written by the Zimmermans. I would, however, like to add that from the perspective of a better than middle of the pack masters runner, that this book contains everything you need to be a successful road runner. Most of the information is not new but it is an excellent SINGLE SOURCE for anyone who wants to find a way to improve his or her running. Although co-written by an elite runner, I was pleased to read about training in a manner to which I could relate. The pace charts, age graded and other tables are excellent. Thanks to both Alberto and Richard for writing a running book that made me feel they were talking directly to me. BRAVO!
