In book 23 of the Magic Tree House, award-winning author Mary Pope Osborne's popular young adventure series, siblings Jack and Annie travel back to American pioneer times. Their task, assigned by mysterious Camelot librarian Morgan le Fay, is to find "something to learn." When their magic tree house alights on a Kansas prairie in the 1870s, Jack and Annie quickly find a one-room schoolhouse with classes in session. Something to learn! After an all-too-brief school day, the two return to the tree house with their mission completed. But wait: "In the distance, twisting black clouds had dropped out of the storm clouds. They swirled into a funnel shape." A twister! And the young teacher and students in the school don't realize there's a storm cellar under the floor. Jack and Annie must brave the howling winds to return and save their new friends.
Osborne's insatiable devotees will devour her latest adventure story, following Civil War on Sunday, Revolutionary War on Wednesday, and all the other titles in this exciting series. What better way to learn about history than to travel through time and space, experiencing it firsthand? (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07
My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
magic, danger, history.......2006-06-02
The book Twisters on Tuesday features magic, danger and history. The magic is the tree house. I bet you're saying huh? Read the book to find out about this magical adventure.
The main characters of the story are Annie, Jake,Ted and Morgen. Annie is Jake's sister. She likes danger and Jake likes to study.
Ted is a featured charactar in this book. He starts out as a human and changes, into a dog and the story's plot is how Annie and Jake help him. I recommend this book to people who like magic and history in their books.

TWISTER!!!!!!!.......2006-01-19
I enjoyed reading Twister on Tuesday. Although this book is fiction, it uses many facts so that you always learn something new. Jack and Annie go back in time to a prairie to help Morgan, the secret librarian. They end up getting caught in a twister while helping their new friends to safety. I recommend that you will like reading this book as much as I did.

Caution: for advanced storytellers only! The tongue twisters in this book will have your children laughing for hours--and that laughter just might be directed at you! Mixing genuine words with classic Seuss vocabulary, Oh Say Can You Say gets trickier with every page. You'll start off easy with this cautionary limerick:
Said a book-reading parrot named Hooey, "The words in this book are all phooey. When you join them your lips will make slips and back flips, and your tongue may end up in Saint Looey!"
Don't say he didn't warn you. For a truly inspired family gigglefest, this is the top of the charts. (Preschool to early reader) --Jill Lightner

Oh Say Can You Say.......2007-01-18
Great book for my 1st grader, he loves the rhyming words throughout.
My favorite children's book to read aloud!.......2006-03-09
This book captures literary genius in the form of childish tongue twisters. It proves to be an excellent practice of diction and reading rhythm while providing extreme entertainment for the little listener. The love of words is the beginning of all great literary accomplishment, and this child's book is a step in the right direction.
Oh, Say I Can't Say.......2005-09-15
This book was one of my husbands favorites when he was growing up, and now that we are expecting a child he wanted our son to have the same experience. He was so excited when it arrived that he read it to me as a bedtime story. The riddles start out easy, but by the end of the book your tongue is so twisted it's hard to say anything!! It's a lot of fun and we really look forward to hearing our son try to say these riddles when he learns to speak.
What a fun book!.......2004-10-27
This is a really fun book to read. However, you REALLY have to pay attention to the words or you will mess them up. If you love tongue twisters, this is the book for you. It also is great for young readers, but they may become frustrated with some of the words. It's fun for little ones to listen to and to see how fast you can say these phrases. When you hear "faster, faster," well, you know you're encouraging reading in your child. A very fun book - I recommend it.
oh say can you say is a very good book.......2003-12-17
its a rhymeing book good for all ages and fun to read. It will leave you with a smile on your face wondering how he did it again. Dr. Seuss is a great author and shows you why once again in this book....

Customer Reviews:
A Great 2nd book in this series.......2007-05-25
For you Harry Potter Charlie Bones is a wonderful substituion. Charlie Bone and the Time Twister is a great book. Charlie Bone finds out more about his endowment and more about his evil aunts. He meets a boy from the past and goes on another journey to save someone he doesn't even know. This book is better then the first, with new characters and new endowments.
Very good.......2007-01-24
I like magic and fantastic stories very much and this one is very good...everything you can imagine of a book and with an excellent message about family values and how to confront common family problems.
Great for kids under 13... :)
Fun For All.......2006-12-02
It's the year 1916 and Henry and James Yewbeam have been sent to live at Bloor's Academy with their Uncle Gideon Bloor because their sister Daphne has Diphtheria. One day Henry is alone playing marbles when his cousin Zeke rolls a marble known as the "Time Twister" towards him. Henry can't resist the beautiful marble, but when he grabs it, he is propelled almost ninety years into the future. Fortunately, he meets his cousin Charlie Bone who hides him so the Bloor's can't find him. It's not easy, many of the students at Bloor Academy are "endowed" with special powers and some use their powers in malevolent ways. Plus, Charlie's Yewbeam aunts would like to get a hold of Henry. It will take all the efforts of Charlie, his friends, and his Uncle Paton to keep Henry safe.
"Charlie Bone and the Time Twister", the second book in Jenny Nimmo's the Children of the Red King series, is a charming if somewhat derivative book. In the front of book, there is a list of the endowed children at Bloor's Academy and their special powers, which is a useful reference. However, Nimmo can be a bit inconsistent with the powers. For example, Gabriel Silk can feel other people's emotions by touching their clothes, which literally causes him pain at times, yet at other times he casually handles people's clothes with no problem at all. Otherwise, the supernatural elements are nicely done; I especially love the "flames", three seemingly ageless cats, who have a knack of being there when needed. While Nimmo has a good story going on in this series, her writing could be tightened up as she spends too much time telling her readers what is going on instead of letting the action show them. Also, too many times she uses the word famous needlessly, why exactly would gerbils be famous? Henry disappears from the book for long stretches of time; it would have been nice to see more of his side of things. Nimmo does have a nice sense of humor in the book and I loved the word play: Tancred Torsson, who has the ability to create storms, lives in Thunder House on Hail Road.
"Charlie Bone and the Time Twister" is good fun for young and old alike, but children may enjoy it more as adults might like a deeper read.
Teacher's Grade: B+.......2006-11-20
The Charlie Bone series is an entertaining one, and all the kids I know who read it want to keep reading more. That's my goal as a teacher, so I try not to quibble with the gigantic plot holes that exist in the world Nimmo has created. Nor do I care that the main character seems to have no personality. He merely serves as a plot anchor.
I confess that I enjoyed this book, and am happy that so many of the 3-5th grade kids I teach and know enjoy it too.
Twisting book that can probbably hurt the mind.......2006-10-18
This book was very interesting, however it had too many things going on at once. It was hard for me to follow. It had a lot of action, but it was confusing and hard to follow. I like the red king series, but this was the worst of the five. Plus, it was a total Harry Potter wannabe. If you liked this book, the GREAT! Go pick up a harry potter book instead. You'll like it 10x as much. Trust me.

Twisters.......2006-03-08
Do you know how rain is formed? Do you know when tornado season is? If you want to know these questions read the Magic Tree House book Twisters by Mary Pope Osborn and Sal Murdocca. Read this nonfiction book and learn how hail is formed, learn what is the worst storm. Also there are some sweet experiments. This is an awesome book I loved it a lot. Go to the book store near you and get this book or any Magic Tree House book.
A real "Twister".......2005-02-07
The book that I'm reviewing in school is Twisters and it's by Mary Pope Osborne. I think this book deserves four stars because it is an interesting book to read. The book I'm reading is about weather. They talk about twisters, hurricanes, storms and other cool things. One thing that I learned is hail can be the size of a golf ball. Also, there are different kinds of hail sizes, like the size of a ant. I would recommend this book to a friend because if you're doing research you could find great information. Other books by this author are research guides on other topics.

Twisters.......2004-02-06
Twisters are tornadoes. I learned about them in the book Twisters by Will Osborne. Twisters wreak everything. Twisters can destroy homes because the winds go 300 miles per hour. They hit in the midwestern U.S. in April, May and June. I feel excited about this book because it's good to know about natural disasters so if it happens you'll be prepared.

Book Description
When a tornado watch is issued one Tuesday evening in June, twelve-year-old Dan Hatch and his best friend, Arthur, don't think much of it. After all, tornado warnings are a way of life during the summer in Grand Island, Nebraska. But soon enough, the wind begins to howl, and the lights and telephone stop working. Then the emergency siren starts to wail. Dan, his baby brother, and Arthur have only seconds to get to the basement before the monstrous twister is on top of them. Little do they know that even if they do survive the storm, their ordeal will have only just begun. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book for Middle Schoolers.......2007-07-17
This novel is about a boy and his friends and family that survive seven tornados in their town of Grand Island, Nebraska. Dan, his friend Arthur and his little brother Ryan wait out the tornados in the shower stall in Dan's basement. When the storm is over, they desperately seek to find their families and shelter. In the end, the novel explains how they survived after the storm. The themes are of family, community and survival.
This novel explains storms in great detail. The use of sensory details is tremendous. I have been through a tornado, heard the sirens, and felt what the character felt. It was dead on. The characterization and the changes in Dan from beginning to end are/can be a focus in the classroom. The novel can provide the students with a book rich in details and character development. It moves at a fast pace and is a page-turner. The vocabulary is not very challenging, I believe, but the words that are unfamiliar will be easy to find among context clues due to strong interest of the story. This book could also help emphasize character education as far as perseverance and selflessness.
The novel is completely accurate. I felt like I was in the tornado. I have been through a tornado and lived in an area where the sirens came on. Reading this book, put me right back there. It is obvious the author has been through a tornado or did their research. It is believable for most people; some find the devastation hard to believe if they have never seen what Mother Nature can do. I believe, in light of Hurricane Katrina, that students will believe the author's details in this novel. It is easy to see everything through Dan's eyes whether you are male, female, or any race. It is about him and the storm.
I did not find anything controversial in this novel. It is appropriate for 7th grade, maybe even 6th grade. The book is a fairly easy read with some vocabulary that can be pointed out as unfamiliar. The thing about this novel is that it is completely entertaining. They can actually get into this book and can focus on the sensory details and characterization of Dan and Arthur. They will not agonize over the details but embrace them. GREAT literary merit and a fantastic, interesting read. I LOVED it!
Worthwhile book based on true events.......2007-07-14
As a fellow Nebraskan who remembers that night, I wanted the book from the moment I heard it had been written. And it was well worth it, as it made many of the events of that night become alive and realistic for the reader. That night certainly changed the face of parts of GI.
It's a good book, though not for much younger than 8 as some parts are a little scary. Ruckman wrote in first person, telling it from the viewpoint of Danny. It makes it very comprehendable as well as interesting for young readers.
WOWEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Night of the Twisters.......2007-03-28
My classmates and I are reading this book.It is about a boy named Danny and his best friend Arthur and Danny's little brother, Ryan. The boys and Danny's mom are wathing the weather channel and there is a tornado watch, then a warning, then the siren!!!Well, the mom is out of the house checking on their neighbor,Mrs.Smiley.Danny's mom doesn't hear the siren! While the 3 boys are downstaires, the tornado is in the center of the house!!! The house was ruined. But wait....where's Danny's mom? Suprisingly ,the boys look up and they hear windows from a CAR crashing! Then a scream!!!The scream was his mom...ooo, I would HATE to be her.Read this book to find out what happens next!
A Reivew From Myra From Creston.......2007-01-30
If I had to describe this book in 2 words they would be...panic-stricken. I enjoyed reading it because it's one of those "can't put down" books and the suspense built up more and more every page! Although I normally don't enjoy action books/movies/video games etc. this kept my interests and held on tight. I think everyone who has ever doubted action should read Night of the Twisters.
The characters are as close as they can be to real. Dan Hatch is normally a fun loving kid; when the tornado struck he is a "cry-baby". Ivy Ruckman could actually make you feel as though you were Dan. The fear, the sadness, and the terrifying experience flowed into your blood turning you into one of the characters. As a conclusion the characters are defiantly real!
On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this book an 8. If I were the author I would have changed a few scenes in the book, cut it shorter, and token out a couple of unnecessary characters. I really don't enjoy long books. I call it a L.T.I.N.T.B (Longer then it needs to be) book. Those are the only changes I would have made.
I learned a couple lessons from Night of the Twisters.
Reason #1) you always have to expect the worst of thing to happen and hope for the best.
Reason #2) a disaster can never be too far behind you.
They may not be what we call life's little lessons but they sure can make a difference.
This was an okay book. Too scary for me........2006-10-02
It was about a 12 year old boy and his best friend and baby brother. They pretend that the tornado is just not goning to happen but the weather channel says a tornado is going to hit ground. Dan and his best friend think thats it not going to happen but then the winds start to howl and it starts to rain and hail. Then the boys know they should have listened! Read it to see what happens to them.

They should have made the movie following this book.......2005-02-22
Not to be confused with the 1996 movie, Jack Bickham's "Twister" is a fictional book written in the mid 70's and somewhat based on the true to life tornado "super outbreak" of 1974. The outbreak in this book covers almost the entire U.S. east of the Mississippi, with suspensful descriptions of tornadoes striking various areas, weaved in with a cross section of well rounded characters; from a Congressman to a trucker, a small city mayor to a rural grandmother, and many other interesting side stories. The author also takes one inside the world of tornado science, from the perspective of the Severe Storm Forecast Center, and Severe Storms Lab, although the technology is a bit dated now. The book moves at a rapid pace, and with all the interesting characters in peril throughout the book, you will read it from cover to cover in very short order, and enjoy every bit of it. Hollywood should have used this as a template for the movie - I still think they should, but maybe it would be a better mini series (are you listening HBO?)

This book offers 17 new stories of daring adventurers who meddle with time including: a science fiction fan who warded off an alien invasion of Earth through contemporary culture...Joan of Arc's training in future history...and an FBI hunt for a Mafia don who found his way back to the age of knighthood.

seventeen fun new science fiction tales .......2007-01-05
These seventeen new science fiction tales focus on time travel and the related paradoxes including the impact on the present by changing the past and meeting one's self or ancestors, etc. The short stories are fun to read, but the mode of delivery never allows any of the entries to go deep into the seemingly impossibility of time travel. Still fans of the topic like this reviewer (EC comics hooked me during my prehistorical period - the late 1950s) will find all are Wells with this anthology. All the entries are fun for those who enjoy reading TIME TWISTERS; especially enjoyable are "Yeshua's Choice" at Masada, "Downtown Knight" (the mobster meets the Templar on the latter's turf), nineteen years old conscript Pheidas of the Philistine army who has "Occupation Duty" in Gaza and "Voices" as Joan of Arc learns combat strategy with a modern day military unit. The rest are well written fine contributions to a delightful compilation with all the time in the world to stroll down a not so "Mundane Lane".
