Geared towards professionals .......2007-08-20
This book is definately geared towards the professional makeup artist. I'm an avid Halloween costumer and wanted to try special effects makeup but this book was over my head. The author assumes that you have some basic knowledge of makeup technique and the lack of color photos makes it impossible for the novice to figure out what he's talking about. I'm thinking of purchasing Laura Thudium's makeup book to learn the basics and then hopefully this book will be more useful.
Not very current..........2007-07-18
This was a good book and gave a lot of technical advice and illustration but it didn't help me as much as I was hoping. It's dated-- now we're having to deal with changes in makeup due to Hi-Def, etc. These are not addressed... nor are many other things that I think are relevant to doing makeup for film/tv in 2007.
Only relevant to FX artists.......2007-05-07
Why didn't I listen to the other reviewers? The tiny section on "beauty" makeup is dated and unhelpful.
The Technique .......2006-06-23
The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book.
Mostly Black & White Photos!.......2006-02-03
You would think that a book on makeup -- especially at this price -- would contain many more color photographs. After all, successful makeup is dependent upon illusions of color as well as light and shadow.
That said, I did learn a great deal from the book, particularly the chapter on human aging. This is a good book if you are as interested in makeup theory as you are technique.

Helped out on film shoot..........2007-01-06
i actually used this book to reference several special effects i did on a tarantino film. so yeah i would say its a great book if i'm willing to do that.
style versus content.......2006-03-04
The book appears to be packed full of very useful technical information regarding make-up types and possible uses for such.Time and experience will tell if all the information is valid or even useful in a u.k market. Was disappointed at the lack of colour photos which made the book shoddy in appearance

guidebook for makeup artists to step in the industry.......2007-05-26
touches all basics of makeup. serves as a guideline for beginner to medium level artists. it gives you a general idea of how each step/aspect of makeup work should be done. but if you want to go deeper into any of those areas, you need more specific books. also, it's more a film/tv makeup book, than a fashion/glamour makeup book. I rated it 4 stars, not because it's not good enough, but because it does not cater to my need.
Right up there next to Corson.......2004-12-07
This book saves you the classroom costs by going step by step in every procedure you should know and also has helpful assignments to do at home. Not to mention that it's cheaper than a Corson book and just as valuable.
Thanks DC "Ohio Make-up Artist".......2004-11-11
That review was really helpful. For the past couple of weeks I have been debating back and forth about whether or not I should take the $2,000 basic make-up class or just buy a book and teach myself. Your review helped with my decision. I'm going to buy the book. Hopefully I will be equally as pleased as you are.
BTW, I had to rate the item in order to write the review. Please disregard it. I'll be back with the real rating once I actually read the book. LOL.
This is THE book.......2004-11-03
If you have a desire to learn makeup techniques beyond making someone beautiful (which is included too) then this is the book for you. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, and the illustrations show you what the finished product should look like. I spent $2K for two classes in basic makeup and advanced makeup techiniques, all of which I could've learned from this book. Can't praise it highly enough!
Brilliant!.......2004-04-16
This book is very useful and interesting, it will keep u occupied for hours! It shows step by step methods for applying make-up. It's every make-artist or somebody who is into make-up's dream!

Book Description
Working in primarily low-budget films, Paul Blaisdell was forced to rely for his creations on greasepaint, guts and, most importantly, imagination. Here are all the details.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting story of a 50's movie legend.......2005-12-21
This book recounts the film exploits of Paul Blaisdell who, after working on SF pulps, provided costumes, special effects, and some stuntwork and acting for a variety of low budget films of the 50's and 60's most notably SF and horror. The book is laid out in chronological order with each major film occupying a chapter. There are many interesting illustrations including some that were taken as pranks like Blaisdell in full monster costume dancing with Lori Nelson. Most of the photos appear to be from the collection of Blaisdell or his friends and associates rather than production stills. Much of the written material is anecdotal. The author does provide synopses of each of the significant films. This is not necessarily space filler as some of these films are no longer so easy to find and having the plot recounted is helpful to understanding the work Blaisdell did. Of course, it is unlikely anyone reading this review will be unfamiliar with Blaisdell and explaining the importance of his work is probably like preaching to the choir. I doubt a more effective book is likely to come along any time soon. My only complaint is that there is not quite enough technical detail on making the costumes particularly in that there has already been a lot published albeit in more specialized magazines. Aside from that quibble, the book is quite nice and well laid out. If you feel strongly enough about Blaisdell's work to want to read a book about it, then this is the book you are waiting for.
made art out of no $$$.......2004-06-15
In the Bible, the Israelites were ordered by the Pharaoh to make bricks without straw. Similarly, Blaisdell had to create visually interesting and workable monsters on short notice with virtually no money. He succeeded admirably despite having the deck stacked against him. Anyone remotely interested in genre movies will be fascinated by this thorough, excellent book. Highly recommended.
Great stuff on a limited budget.......2001-09-18
Gives a great insight into Paul's work, in some cases you'd think you were there with him. The conditions that Paul worked under was amazing and his commitment and materials used.
His wicked sense of humour and support from his friends in this
then under exposed art of effects and monster making. Still think Technicians behind the scenes should get more support and recognition - grin. This book tops up your enthusiasm to do more
Thanks Randy!.......2001-07-16
Randy Palmer eloquently invokes the fun-loving spirit of Paul and his funky, renegade creations. Paul certainly was a rare breed; capable of creating fiercely original monsters under less than thankless conditions. Paul's monsters are as endearing as they are memorable, imbued with a soulfulness that few possess. Technique can be learned - imagination can't! Like most gifted artists Paul possessed this and met a tragic end. Randy Palmer sets the record straight and Paul is finally given his due. Randy's book is a MUST own for monster lovers/makers everywhere! A big "Beulah" thank you to Randy...and of course Paul.
long due respect for a forgotten monster maker.......2000-08-06
For those of you who don't know, Paul Blaisdell designed and built some of the most memorable movie monsters of the late fifties operating under incredible time constraints and a budget laughable even for American International Pictures. Remember the carrot creature from It Conquered the World? How about the pulpish titular antagonists from Invasion of the Saucer Men or the anatomically correct She Creature? While other special effects men of the time, such as Ray Harryhausen, went on to acclaim and respect in the Hollywood establishment Blaisdell was ignominiously fired upon asking for a little respect in an industry that treats its unknowns even worse than its shining stars. The only information available on the man has been from an old article in Cinefantastique magazine and in the reminiscences of his friend and champion, Bob Burns. This well researched biography can be seen as a celebration of a forgotten special effects man and as another cautionary tale of the Hollywood fringe (a great companion piece to the Ed Wood biography, The Nightmare of Ectasy). Some of his notable creations may be so for the wrong reasons but they had more heart than a good majority of the slick and forgettable monsters made these days. Mr. Palmer's book is a wonderful addition to the bookshelf of any fan of fantastic films and their creators.

Customer Reviews:
Good for learning the basics.......2006-03-01
The book covers the basic principals of makeup, both staight and character makeup. I especially liked the activities (hands-on practice) that accompanied the chapters. These were things that were not touched on in cosmetology school. The book also contains student profiles, examples of their work and how they got started. The book is a good reference for anyone beginning a career, but would probably be to general for an accomplished, working artist.

The Complete Makeup Artist Book written by Penny Delamar.......2000-03-01
There are step by step photographs in this book that are truly amazing; as a whole it is a comprehensive assembly of all the information that a makeup artist needs and is essential both for the novice and professional. The author makes the point that the makeup in 'Gone with the Wind' was designed for a 1930s audience. The website for the author's training school (the make-up centre.co.uk) claims Oscar nominees amongst her graduates; this is the info they started with.
Amazon.com
For as long as they've been in existence, horror and sci-fi movies have relied on special effects and makeup to make the unreal seem real. In Men, Makeup, and Monsters: Hollywood's Masters of Illusion and FX, Fangoria editor Anthony Timpone presents profiles a dozen of today's most brilliant practitioners of the art and science of effects. Artists such as Stan Winston, Rick Baker, and Dick Smith have made everything from aliens to dinosaurs to zombies come alive on the screen, employing a staggering variety of techniques. In their conversations with Timpone, Winston and company explain how they accomplished dozens of their most notable effects, which involve the use of makeup, appliances, puppetry, robotics, CGI, animatronics, and more. Abundant photos (including a color section) show both finished products and works in progress.
Men, Makeup, and Monsters is aimed not just at curious movie fans, but also at prospective practitioners of the trade. Timpone's introduction includes straightforward explanations of basic industry terminology and procedures, and gives a realistic picture of what it takes to break into this increasingly competitive business. Appendices include a glossary and a directory of makeup schools.
Movie fans who routinely leave the theater asking, "How did they do that?" will find this detailed look behind the illusions absorbing, and will come away with as much admiration for the artists as for the effects they create. --Mary V. Burke

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words.......2001-06-27
The story of Max Factor as he rose from Russian immigrant to Hollywood royalty-the man who brought glamour to the stars and regular folks alike with the invention of pancake makeup, no fade lipstick and the idea that makeup should fit a woman's coloring. (He had rooms in his store for blondes, brownettes, brunettes and redheads-all color coded and enhanced to work with the skin tones of the women in each category!) The star of this book is definitely the photographs, however. Make-up test shots, his early years in Russia, wig making contraptions, print ads of the stars endorsing his products-the pictures tell a better story than the text!
Beauty For Old Hollywood.......2001-05-15
Filled to the brim with glamour shots of some of the Western World's most beautiful women, this book shows us the man beind the mask, the incomparable Max Factor. Almost every shot is shown behind the scenes, how the look was created, etc. . .Truly a masterpiece work.
