This unassuming hardcover in black buckram with a dark lavender title plate is the door into a world of twisted pleasures. Filmmaker Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas) tells 23 winsomely macabre stories about boys and girls who don't fit in. Their bodies are misshapen, their habits are odd, and their parents are appalled by them. But they do try hard to be human, like poor unwanted Mummy Boy, who's "a bundle of gauze": he goes for a walk in the park with his mummy dog. Some kids are having "a birthday party for a Mexican girl." They think Mummy Boy is a piñata: "They took a baseball bat and whacked open his head. Mummy Boy fell to the ground; he finally was dead. Inside of his head were no candy or prizes, just a few stray beetles of various sizes." For all its simple humor, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories is a peculiarly disturbing book about the violence that children suffer. It is illustrated in pen and ink, watercolor, and crayon. The themes and imagery are at a young-adult to adult level.
Book Description
From breathtaking stop-action animation to bittersweet modern fairy tales, filmmaker Tim Burton has become known for his unique visual brilliance -- witty and macabre at once. Now he gives birth to a cast of gruesomely sympathetic children -- misunderstood outcasts who struggle to find love and belonging in their cruel, cruel worlds. His lovingly lurid illustrations evoke both the sweetness and the tragedy of these dark yet simple beings -- hopeful, hapless heroes who appeal to the ugly outsider in all of us, and let us laugh at a world we have long left behind (mostly anyway).

very weir look inside Tim Burton's mind.......2007-08-16
I bought this as a gift for my wife, who is a big Tim Burton fan. It went over great! The book is nicely printed hardcover, making a good gift presentation. The illustrations and poetry are sometimes disturbing, but that was to be expected.
A book of NOT SO CURIOUS curiosities.......2007-06-28
Frankly, I didn't find this book to be very creative or interesting. Many of the vignettes are much too short to evoke any humor or feelings. The author seems to have glanced at his surroundings and made a boy or girl character out of things ranging from stains to matches and then proceeded to make up obvious stories about them. (Surprise, surprise, the match girl was "hot" and burned up her stick lover.) The three stars is for the illustrations and the melancholy concept.
Darkly entertaining.......2007-03-18
Melancholy is the right word for the mood of this little book! The drawings and the rhymes are so simple, yet they evoke such emotion - I was horrified in a gleeful sort of way - 'uh oh, I can't believe where this is heading' - it's so grim and sad, yet I found myself laughing out loud. Definitely for those with a certain sense of humour.
My 1st time.......2007-03-09
This book is my first time with Tim Burton's poetry.
I must say that is strange but very good!
The Melancholy Death of Oster Bay : and Other Stories.......2007-03-08
Tim Burton is a master at what he does. This is a cute book of short stories and poems, which are slightly creepy and incredibly clever. I loved it.
Book Description
A stunning visual companion to the newest film from Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), featuring storyboards, movie stills, and Burton's own drawings.
Corpse Bride carries on in the dark, romantic tradition of Tim Burton's classic films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Set in a 19th century European village, this stopmotion, animated feature follows the story of Victor (Johnny Depp), a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham-Carter), while his real bride, Victoria (Emily Watson), waits bereft in the land of the living. Though life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colorful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world, or the next, that can keep him away from his one true love. It's a tale of optimism, romance and a very lively afterlife, told in a classic Tim Burton style.
Like Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, this official visual companion showcases spectacular movie stills, sketches, paintings, and Tim Burton's own drawings. Covering preproduction, production, and post-production, sections detail character realization, set development and construction, puppet fabrication, costuming, and stop-motion filming. The book's final part retells the film's story in images with synopsis, storyboards, and lyrics. 140 color illustrations.

Fast delivery, perfect condition.......2007-08-01
I paid for expedited shipping of this book and received it two days earlier than I expected. The book was in perfect condition. I definitely recommend this seller!
Lots of good information.......2007-01-05
If you are looking for a book with a little bit of insight into the creation of the Corpse Bride film, this is good choice. Nice selection of production pictures and concept artwork with a good description of the processes involved.
The book covers puppet making, music creation and a small scale time line of concept to film.
If you love the film, you shoudn't miss the book........2006-04-17
I bought this book several months ago in a local bookstore. The photos and images in the book attracted my attention almost immediately, although at that time I've only heard of the film but haven't watched it. Like other behind-the-scenes books, it shows how they produced the film in every detail, from beginning to end. I especially like the concept sketches and the black humor. The production process also provides a good reference to the making of stop-motion animation, which makes this book unique. If you like the the film or stop-motion animation, I believe this book won't disappoint you.
The lush tie-in book for CORPSE BRIDE.......2006-03-18
TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE: AN INVITATION TO THE WEDDING is the lush movie book accompaniment to tie into the release of TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE, and includes a foreword by Burton, details on his film, storyboards, his drawings, and more. It arrived too late for more timely holiday mention but the movie is certain to be a hit for many months and any viewer or would-be viewer will continue to find TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE an excellent guide to the movie.
Corpse book.......2006-03-10
I am a student of the great art of stop-motion-animation. For those interested in this pioneering addition to the art form or just interested in what it takes to write plan and pull off a feature length animation this is a great book. Lots of colot photos, concept sketches and digital concept art as well as the writing itself tells a lot about what it took to pull it all together. Well worth it to own as a reference and the coffee table.
Customer Reviews:
One of the few very interesting nonfiction books.......2005-12-28
I got this book at Disneyland yesterday. It was SO great! I'm glad I bought this instead of a stuffed Sally doll. It was very interesting, and I'm very pleased to see storyboards and the very informative contents of the book, especially the poem of The Nightmare Before Christmas. However, I wish I could've read more of the poem Tim Burton wrote. Then I could compare it to the original poem of The Night Before Christmas. Tim Burton is an exceedingly creative man, and I'm glad he makes stop-motion animation, because I'm SO sick of all the stupid computer animated movies that studios make nowadays. Tim Burton follows his own ideas, and this movie inspired me to be a stop-motion animator when I grow up, alongside with a career as an author.

This Book Is So Cool!.......2005-09-25
If you've ever seen Tim Burton's truly excellent stop-motion animation film The Nightmare Before Christmas, then you've probably wondered, "How was all this done?" This book can answer that. Inside you'll find the stories behind the screenplay, the music, the process of stop-motion animation itself, and see some of Burton's original sketches that gave inspiration to one of the most imaginative and outright magnificent movies in the last fifteen years. If you love The Nightmare Before Christmas, then you'll go nuts over this book.
A must have in your personal library.......2005-08-30
If you're interested in knowing more about Tim Burton's movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, this book is a great buy. It has all the details about the making of the movie and the characters plus loads of great pictures. A must have for every Nightmare Before Christmas enthusiast.
Very illustrative..........2005-07-11
This book is definitely very illustrative about the process of creation of a film of the caliber of `The nightmare before Christmas'. With a foreword by Tim Burton, the book includes everything related with the making of this stop-motion animation classic. This book is more a documentary about the making of the film; it is divided in three sections (described below) and takes you through the whole process of creation of the movie. It is an interesting document indeed for people wanting to know about the creative process of making a movie of this kind. A perfect companion for the film!
The Film
The first part of the book focuses on the story ans the lyrics of the movie songs, beautifully illustrated with pictures from the movie, designs and Burton's sketches. Some movie facts are also given in this part of the book.
The Art
The original poem by Burton in which the movie is based on is presented in the firt part of the section. Most of Burton's sketches and character designs are here. The design of the sets, the characters and storyboards are well explained and presented in this section of the book with beautiful pictures, colored sketches and original drawings by Tim.
The Vision
In this section we get to meet all the people involved in making this film possible, and a little background on her profiles and how they were selected to partake on this project. Tim Burton, Henry Selick, Danny Elfman, Caroline Thompson, Kathleen Gavin and Denise Di Novi participate with comments and thought about the project.
GREAT, BUT WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE MORE.......2005-04-05
I bought this book wanting to know more about the making of the movie, but didn't get as much as I'd hoped for. It does include many sketches from Tim Burton, but hardly an from others who worked on the film. Yes, it does include lyrics to the songs featured in the film, all except for the one I was hoping for ( I can't remember the name, but it's the last song in the movie sung by Jack & Sally... "if you don't mind, I'd like to join you by your side, Where we can gaze upon the stars, And sit together, Now and Forever..")
Most of the book is a pictoral reference on the movie, and though I certainly would have loved to see more, it was still a good buy. It's just too bad I didn't get to read anything on the making of the film, or Burton's thoughts on its production.

Super!.......2007-01-10
Oh my gosh! My daughter loves Tim Burton and when I saw this set, I had to get it for her for Christmas. It is very unique and a must for Burton addicts.
The Best of Burton!.......2007-01-10
I purchased this set for a friend and She loved it! It looks great out of the box and the figures are great! I love it!
Great product if you don't plan to use.......2006-01-07
I love my Stick Boy and Match Girl figurines that come with this set, but I ran into one little problem when I was going to send one of the cards to a friend--the cards don't fit in their envelopes. With a little cramming, I finally got it in there, but it was bow-shaped because the card was just a bit too large for the tiny envelope. This is a unique and fun product, but I don't recommend it if you are actually planning to use the cards.
Very Cool Gift.......2005-11-30
I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend. She is into odd art and objects and this was just the thing. She has read Tim Burton's book, but enjoys his art work more than the stories, thus I felt like this would be a good gift. Nicely packaged and even cooler out of the box.
Book Description
Tim Burton, the cinematic genius behind Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, and Edward Scissorhands, is a product of 1960s “monster culture,” including DC Comics’ Batman, over-the-top movie posters, and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Once a lonely teenager who found solace in horror flicks and cheesy Chiller Theater matinees, Burton relentlessly mines this history in his films, imbuing juvenile fantasy with emotional depth. This definitive study of Burton’s career tracks his life and work. Articles and interviews span his years as a malcontent animator at Walt Disney Studios through his creation of the pop-gothic aesthetic that marks all of his work. The book also features commentary by the editor on the origins of Burton’s ideas, a thorough analysis of each of his films, and images from the movies.

A lot of great information about a great director!.......2003-01-20
"Tim Burton: A Child's Garden of Nightmares" is divided into chapters, each chapter being a movie that he directed or created (A Nightmare Before Christmas). For each chapter, there are articles that people wrote when the movie was being made and a review. I wish it had more interviews with Tim, but oh well. The book also has alot of pictures of him and the actors on set and there's a chapter about the short films that he made (Frankenweenie, Vincent). This book really taught me about Tim Burton and his films. Fun to read!

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully illustrated , melancholy, spooky, charming and FUN!!!!.......2006-12-22
I was lucky to find this at Borders a couple of days ago. My 5 and 3 year olds love it and so do I! It is a shorter version of the movie, thus NO Sally, or Oogie Boogie in the plot. However, they do make an appearance as citizens of Halloween Town. It is in a rhyming verse and this adds to it's charm , one of my fave lines is
"He visted the house of Susie and Dave;
They got a Gumby and Pokey from the grave.
Then on to the home of little Jane Neeman;
She got a baby doll possessed by a demon.""
There is also a spooky parody of "T'was the night before christmas" and Zero as Rudolph, of course. I look forward to reading this book at bedtime or anytime because it is such fun!

Customer Reviews:
Danny Elfman is an incredible movie soundtrack composer.......2007-09-24
This book is a challenge even for the most experienced pianist. His music is fun and intricate and complex. I recommend this book for anyone who is not only a fan of the movie but a fan of excellent music who is looking for music that takes their knowledge of music theory to the max.
absolutely amazing.......2007-08-17
I love all things tim burton, especially the soundtracks to his movies. danny elfman is possibly the most talented composer in hollywood and it baffles me that not all his music is sold as a piano vocal series, since it is so very suitable for just that. consequently I was thrilled to find this little book, and I was not disappointed. it is simple enough for a novice to play along based on the chords, and yet sophisticated enough for the more experienced pianist to get a lot out of the instrument. as has been noted elsewhere, the guitar chords are indeed systematically drawn every tim they occur, which to me is a fantastic idea. every tim burton/danny elfman fan who likes singing and playing the piano should own a copy of this!
the second I got my hands on it, I went directly to my piano and did not get up for the next four hours. that's how great it is to be your very own nightmare before christmas soundtrack!
Don't know music myself, but my son does!.......2006-11-04
I'm not musically gifted like the rest of my family; I only took 4 years of violin to get out of gym, but wouldn't know what to do with one if I picked it up today. But I do know that this music/lyric book has every song from "The Nightmare Before Christmas" movie. anyone that's watched it KNOWS that every song is hauntingly, melodiously beautiful, just like any other Tim Burton production. Even if you can't carry a tune or don't know the words, you have to try to sing along. But with this musicbook you can! -at least know the words -you know best if you can actually sing... I would highly recommend this product! Kudos to the Hal Leonard Corp for making it available! :)
Good song book with guitar chords.......2006-10-06
There's lot of stuff in this tiny cheap book. It's obviously not aimed at orchestrators but more at the movie fans who expect some nice evenings, singing these excellent tunes.
I give this book a 5 because of the guitar chords which are systematically drawn each time they occur. It wasn't expected, especially as we're dealing with a piano vocal song book, so: 2 thumbs up=5 stars !
Delicious nightmare.......2006-03-27
This is a great book with all the wonderful songs of this marvellous musical. I recommended it to any fan of the film, because it will not dissapoint them. There are funny, tragic, exciting, romantic songs, and all of them are absolutly beautiful. I'm going to learn to play the piano just to play this songs.
Book Description
A revised edition of the only book to explore the unique brilliance of director Tim Burton's work, including a new chapter on the making of Sleepy Hollow.
Still only in his thirties, Tim Burton has established himself in the past fifteen years as one of the great visionaries of film. With the Batman films, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and, most recently, Sleepy Hollow, he has continually broken new ground both visually and thematically, exploring the dark anguish--as well as the dark humor--that animates many of his characters while also creating a densely textured, sometimes bizarre look specific to each film.
In Burton on Burton, Burton talks to Mark Salisbury about his training as an animator at Disney, the importance of design in his films, and the recurring themes present in his work. In this revised edition, he also discusses the influence of 1950s sci-fi and 1970s disaster films on Mars Attacks! as well as how he conceived his highly stylized approach to the content and setting of Sleepy Hollow, his acclaimed retelling of the Washington Irving story that stars Johnny Depp, perhaps the actor most identified with Burton's work. Enhanced by stills from the films, storyboards, and illustrations of set designs for all his major films, Burton on Burton provides insights and information about the man and his work, throwing light on both his unique artistic vision and on the extraordinary films that have been the result.

if you love burton.......2007-02-17
bought this for my son, who's a burton fan. he liked that it's a window into burton's thoughts, but would have liked more illustrations/pics.
Complete satisfaction.......2005-10-24
This book covers everything. It's a serious must for film students. I got a complete idea of how to put ideas on the screen and how it affects peoples views. This book never covers up anything. I enjoyed it and it's worth the money
An Awesome Director.......2005-10-12
I've Only been living for a little more than 12 years but i can tell tou how great of a director Tim Burton is.
i havnt read the book yet but i know for sure its gona be good.
think about it this way, tim burton has made all these great movies, like Edward Scissorhands(my personal favorite), the nightmare before christmas, corps bride, and a lot more so if he made all those awesome movies, its gona be good
Where does he get those wonderful toys?.......2005-09-01
"Burton on Burton" acts more like an interview than it does an autobiography. Most of it is written by Burton but it sounds like a transcript of a television special. However, the book is very thorough and presents many interesting anecdotes concerning the inspiration for and production of all of Tim's films up to Sleepy Hollow. They even go so far as to comment on the progres they made on Superman Lives! which was to star Nicholas Cage and be written by Kevin Smith.
For the majority of the book, an italicized summary of a series of events, written by Salisbury, will be followed by a page or two by Burton on that same topic. This is then followed by another paragraph, or so, by Salisbury on a following event and so on and so forth.
Johnny Depp's Prologue, though shorter than expected, is very well written and provides a very interesting look at the actor's view of Burton before he met him, during Edward Scissorhands, after, and then during Ed Wood (and possibly Sleepy Hollow, I can't quite remember). He has some quite nice things to say about Tim and provides an eloquent intro for both the casual Tim fan and the die-hard Burtonite.
Definetly a must for all interested in Tim's work.
A good editorial job.......2005-07-11
Being the Tim Burton fan I am, when I heard of this book I ordered it immediately. The book opens with a foreword written by Johnny Depp (which is more of a `I love Tim because he saved my career' speech) that is told from Johnny's perspective on how he met and admires Tim.
The editorial job Mark Salisbury has made for this book is a very good one. The chapters are divided by movie titles, starting on the first chapter with his childhood in Burbank.
This is basically a compilation of notes, interviews and chats with Tim Burton with notations from the editor. Even though the chapters are named after the movies and are accommodated in chronological order, every chapter covers the period of time in which the movie was being made, so for instance, in the `Mars Attacks' chapter we get to read how close Burton was to start filming a new Superman film with a script written by Kevin Smith.
Everything Burton has done until `Sleepy Hollow' is reviewed and told here, his involvement in other projects, his book (`The melancholy death of oyster boy') and even TV shows (`Family dog' and `Beetlejuice')
For a Tim Burton fan this might not be a very necessary item (a fan should know all this things), however, I enjoyed all the anecdotes and unknown facts presented here, the level of detail given by the editor definitely gives you another vision of how Tim works, in the interviews and chats with him you get to see why is he considered as the genius he indeed is.
