HILARIOUS.......2004-09-17
Picked this book up by chance and just started reading. I found myself in the middle of the book store with tears rolling down my face; from laughter that is!! I've called friends and family members just to share some of the stories - I believe in spreading the "best medicine"!! Definitley a quick pick me up. I suggest this book to any woman who needs a good laugh. You'll wear it well when you get to "Look'n Good" - Damn those panty hose!!
JOY IS MEDICINE FOR A WEARY HEART!.......2003-04-08
I absolutely love this book. In fact, I am online here trying to find copies to send to all women family members and friends! I honestly have not read one book all the way thru in years, BUT, I have read this one in a week and a half. This is saying a lot-the stories grab your attention. Each story is quirky and you'll find yourself laughing out of your seat!
Enjoy this book don't let it slip you by!
Fell on the floor laughing.......2000-04-08

Book Description
Have you ever thought about who will be at your funeral? Who will read your eulogy, or what your obituary will say? How about who will take care of your precious mutt, Lester? Formatted like a journal and intermingled with tips from professionals and amusing anecdotes, MY LAST WISHES gives readers an opportunity to fill in all this information and more. It allows them not only to plan their "last party," but also to make the planning process less painful for their loved ones, who otherwise would've had to play a guessing game.
Author Joy Meredith takes a fresh approach to end–of–life planning by making the book a practical guide as well as an opportunity to examine and reflect on your own life with journal entries such as, "What is your biggest accomplishment?" and "What is your biggest regret?" What's more, the book also helps you to enhance your life RIGHT NOW with chapters like "Finish the Unfinished," for example, where readers are guided through the freeing process of making amends and letting go of conflict.
Playful, pragmatic, and lightly spiritual, MY LAST WISHES takes a sensitive subject and makes it charmingly accessible.
Customer Reviews:
No person should be without this book!.......2007-05-15
What a treasure! Ms. Meredith has made a superb contribution with her book "My Last Wishes..." She guides us toward a feeling of empowerment, helping us to discover who we are by thoughtfully and tactfully broaching this most important and inevitable experience. She offers helpful advice and insights, and with her keen sense of humor, allows us to laugh! Kudos to Joy Meredith!
"My Last Wishes" is something everyone should read for themselves and everyone that loves them........2007-03-22
In the process of grieving for the sudden lost of a loved one, this book caught my eye and made me hopeful that the inevitable passing of future family and friends, and myself, may not be so difficult on the ones left behind.
The author somehow makes a simple read out of a taboo subject. Educational, sometimes witty, and straight to the point, this book covers everything you need to know about planning how you would like to be remembered and what you would like happen when your time is up. Good for the young and old alike. A great gift for those that you love.
Everyone should have this book!.......2007-03-16
We all know of stories where a loved one passes on and no one can speak to their wishes. Wouldn't it be easier to tell our loved ones what we would like? This book is the tool! It's an easy to fill out journal that covers a variety of areas including your life, how you envision your final service and how to plan ahead. Even though it's a heavy topic the book takes a serious but light look at important issues. Do your loved ones a favor and let them know your wishes using this book!
Must Have .... Must Read ....... Must Share !!.......2007-02-21
I am not one to go on and on about how things can and should be done. Everyone has their own way through life, but this book is a great way to take stock of where you are in life and how you would want your life and death to be remembered and handled by those who you are leaving behind.
Why did I buy my first copy? Several of my good friends have lost their parents and grandparents in the past 12 months, and were really left numb while they confronted the last days and moments without any ideas of what do to do or say. After seeing and reading through this book in a local bookstore, I ordered 10 copies to share with them and a few others that are facing similar situations now.
I am already getting positive feedback from a friend who lost his dad last summer, ("I wish I had this 9 months ago."). I know my other friends aren't ready for this, or may be reluctant to face it, but I know when I look at how an unplanned death is handled it can be brutal and unforgiving; I will not leave that burden with my wife, child or parent. (Think about the mess going on with Anna Nicole Smith, if you doubt how tragic it can be. What is her daughter going to know about her mother's wishes for her life? NOTHING!)
I would recommend getting a copy for you and your loved ones. Especially for those you don't want to make the tough decisions for. Like to be left on life support or not; cremated -vs- buried; what to do with their kids, belongings and memories; who or what was your greatest loves and memories?
Since taxes and death are inevitable, why not plan to make your loved one's memories good ones, not painful second guesses?
BTW, it is a very good read, so don't be afraid you are sending a "Death Wish" to your friends or coworkers. You are giving them a little bit of love and food for thought!

Some Don't Get It.......2007-06-18
This book is to be read with your online dictionary up and running. It reminds me of when I learned to read 50 years ago -- an enlighted teacher told me, "If you want to understand what the writer is saying, then never skip a word that you do not understand (is beyond your vocabulary)." In this book (unlike his others) RA Moody uses vocabulary like a scalpel under a magnifier, and editors were not allowed to "dumb it down" to Jr. high reading level. I agree with him on the three classifications of personality types that marshall into their camps on NDE. I agree with his observations and analyses, as well as his recommended approach to break up the unending "logjam," so we can each move ahead in exploring NDE and other phsychic phenomena from a more relaxed (less uptight, dogmatic, open-minded, free from emnity, etc.) approach. This is a great book for those who are not offended by having their "correct" interpretation of paranormal challenged. Go back and read the first sentence again. The English language is wonderful and so occidental.
Long on Integrity, short on style.......2006-03-16
One cannot escape a sense of wonder when reading the various descriptions of NDEs by those who have had them. These experiences are invariably fascinating, often life changing for those who have them, and reading about them nudges us toward cautious optimism, for exactly what, we do not know. An undirected, unspecific and limited optimism is the most we can take from these experiences without overreaching.
Moody tells us that the trouble comes when we embrace these NDEs as proof of life after death, to legitimize our work or opinion about them or when we use their subjective quality and lack of scientific access to dismiss them altogether. And of course, science (scientific method) has been unable to explain either what they are or to explain them away.
It is easy to agree with Dr. Moody's sense that those fundamentalists who dismiss these experiences as the work of the Devil are the most deplorable of the lot of interested parties. Still, all of these groups holding claims as to what NDEs really are, or are not, share more with one another than they would have you believe. The all make emotional investments in their positions regarding NDEs than is justified by what is known about them. Even with regard to science, as long as there is the unknown, which there undoubtedly always will be, it, too, is ultimately an "ism" or "belief".
Just as mystical union, enlightenment, the spontaneous mystical experience and Deity itself, are beyond the domain of proof or dismissal, so should we deem the mysterious, even if tantalizing, NDE. Moody encourages us to take comfort from NDEs, laugh at them or be skeptical, but not to take ourselves any more seriously than is merited by what we really know about them. Clearly, the interested parties, whether parapsychologists, fundamentalists or skeptics, feel obliged by the strength of their emotional investments regarding NDEs to say more about them than is justified by any real understanding.
One can feel the disappointment, even anger, in the reviews of those whose prejudices have been challenged by Moody's plea to consider NDEs in a more honest, realistic and humorous context. It is one thing to be inclined toward one or the other of the major positions regarding NDEs but is another to claim definitive knowledge of what they are and what they are not.
I would have given 5 stars for this book if Moody's awkward, certainly odd, writing style and attempts at humor (faults mentioned by other reviewers) weren't so distracting, not to mention tedious. It's one thing to talk about humor, another to be humorous. Nonetheless, this work earned a solid four stars for its integrity, a quality that is too often missing in this genre.
This book was not for me!.......2005-09-19
This book was not at all what I had expected or hoped. I thought it was a scientific look at paranormal phenomena, but this was not that at all. It's not that the book is badly written, or that it's uninteresting and without merit, but it's nearly 200 pages of Mr. Moody's thoughts and research on the history and definitions of the paranormal and the groups of people who are interested in the paranormal and why they are interested. I wasn't interested in reading a thesis of the Paranormal and the Men and Women who love it. If you are the kind of person who loves to tear things apart and study them piece by piece you will enjoy this book very much.
I bought a book about NDE's, apparitions, and the paranormal and I got a thesis on the history of the paranormal and why people are interested. Regardless of how well thought out Mr. Moody's ideas are, and regardless of how accurate these ideas may be, this book is not at all what I expected. It's my own fault, the back cover clearly states what this book is about. But I saw the words "paranormal," and "NDE's" and figure the book was about those things. The back cover is somewhat misleading, however, about this new NDE phenomena that he calls an "empathic near death experience." Moody hardly does more than mention it really. I was terribly disappointed. Moody is not the first author to bring this phenomena up, either. Oriah Mountain Dreamer talks about her experience with this in her book "The Invitation." Hers is a first person account of an empathic near death experience, although she doesn't give it a name. I learned as much or more about it from her in her book than from what Moody talks about in his.
The Last Laugh is prefaced by Neale Donald Walsch, which is why I bought this book in the first place. How wrong I was! I won't be trusting Walsch's judgment on books anymore.
Another problem I had with this book was the way the author seems to delight in bashing Christian Fundamentalists. While I understand the sentiment, I thought it was in rather bad taste. Neale Donald Walsch is a huge proponent of religious tolerance, I'm surprised he added his seal of approval to this book. Perhaps he felt that as Christian Fundamentalists are religiously intolerant by definition that the CF bashing in this book was fair play. To be fair, Moody does take the time to warn Christian Fundamentalists not to read past a very specific point because they aren't going to like what follows. And he's right, they won't.
In summation, don't buy this book if you are hoping for a scientific look at NDE's, apparitions, and the paranormal. Do buy this book if you would like to read a thesis on who is interested in the paranormal and why.
Moody doges and weaves.......2005-04-08
A very odd book.
I do not take exception with Moody for "backtracking" on, or no longer appearing as a true believer in, NDE's reality. That would be his right if he chose to do so, but it isn't clear to me that he is in fact backtracking. In fact, that's the entire problem with this book - not that Moody is suddenly undermining the valdity of the NDE by calling it entertainment, but more that it simply isn't at all clear what he's doing here - if anything.
Moody is not being explicit enough about what is the exact target and logical scope of his claim that "It's all entertainment".
It is one thing to say: "I don't know if NDE is real or not, but the human discussions of NDE are a form of entertainment." But at times he gets slippery and seems to imply that not only are the human discussions of the NDE a form of cultural (human created and exploited) entertainment, but that in addition, the NDE experience itself is somehow being offered to us by some transcendent power or will in the universe in order to entertain us.
That last is a very different and rather interesting and radical claim, if he's really making it. The book is so badly written that it appears he never draws a clear distinction between the NDE (and other paranormal stuff) as a cultural topic within the normal human material and semantic space vs. the NDE as a (possible) "real" ultimate experience with its own transcendent validity (which again may also be 'entertainment' in a cosmic sense, but that concept is radically different from the claim that NDE accounts and speculations function as an entertaining topic in ordinary live human discourse.
It may seem like splitting hairs, but it is a real logical confusion. Suppose I bought a book on earthquakes. For me at least, the aspect of greatest interest would be the reality of earthquakes, their frequency and severity, research on early warnings, building reinforcement methods and so on - things deriving from an understanding that earthquakes are real.
But if the books author went on and on about the entertainment value of earthquake movies and stories and the shock value of dramatic photos and what not, saying that these materials function culturally to enteratain us, and then only hinting slyly that earthquakes might or might not be real (and if real, they might or might not be experienced as a kind of entertainment) - I guess I'd agree but who cares?
I want to know: Do earthquakes really happen? And if they do, let's just talk about them straighforwardly rather than get into this side discussion of the possible entertainment value of earthquake related derivative works. It isn't exactly false, it just doesn't matter much. Anyway Moody just doesn't make clear whether he's making the radical claim that the universe/God itself is providing a true death survival mechanism for us humans (in order to entertain us), or if it is merely the prosaic claim that we humans are entertaining (or scaring) ourselves with such stories.
At a high level though, Moody has a good concept with an ancient pedigree - the ancient Hindu's clearly labeled all of material creation as "lila" - the great play of the gods.
A Definite 'Bonk'!.......2005-03-10
I am not often motivated to rate books, but this one annoyed me. It is dull, repetitive, disorganized and discouraging. As another reviewer noted, I guess I just didn't get the joke. Don't buy it unless you want to be bored and depressed.

Book Description
Dwight Frye's Last Laugh details the dramatic rise and fall of the actor who won immortality as the giggling Renfield of Dracula and the sadistic hunchback of Frankenstein.
Authorized by Dwight's son Dwight David, the book includes detailed information of Frye's early stage work, his Broadway triumphs and his ghoulish typecasting in Hollywoodwhich ironically assured him a posthumous cult status among horror film disciples.

A Brave and Wonderful Man.......2005-09-24
I have been a Dwight Frye fan for five years and I have had this wonderful book that long. It is worn and old but when November 7 roles around I usually pull Dwight Fryes Last Laugh out and start reading. He was an incredibly talented actor and I wish he would have been given a chance in Hollywood. I believe he would have made it big. Thanks to the authors Gregory William Mank, James T. Coughlin, and the late Dwight David Frye. Thank you Dwight I. Frye for all the inpiration!!
Dwight Frye's Last Laugh.......2005-08-03
Very interesting reading, I enjoyed this book so much, because I have always been interested in Dwight Frye as an actor , but didn't know where to turn for information on him....Lucky me, I found this great book on the internet....I have read it over and over and make many references to the book along with the movies it covers... This book is about a great character actor..Must Have...
A wonderful book........1999-11-02
I enjoyed this book a lot. It's very well written, and while reading it, I wished it'd go on forever. Frye was a remarkable actor, and deserved a better fate. So sad his life and career was cut short. (Shouldn't someone film this story ?.) I highly recommend the book, not just to Horror fans.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST BIOGRAPHY.......1998-10-18
I have been a HUGE fan of Univrsal Horror since I was a small child. I am more a fan of Dwight Frye. He has for a long time been considered the more neglected actor of Universal Horror, after I have read all the books that contain facts about him, seen all the card sets of him,and seen all the the movies, I think he has earned his way into being considered one of the big name actors. This great biography tells all about this great man and his now famous carear.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-08-16
I TELL YA, IVE BEEN TO HOLLYWOOD MANY A TIME AND STOOD IN THE SPOT WHERE HE DIED AND HONESTLY, IT GIVES YOU A WEIRD FEELING. MAYBE THATS BECAUSE HE HAD SUCH AN IMPACT ON PERFECT STRANGERS LIKE ME. I AM SO GLAD THIS BOOK CAME OUT SO I COULD LEARN MORE ABOUT ULTRA-COOL DWIGHT!

Meet a not-so-nice snake, a jittery gopher, and a duck who doesn't know what he's in for. But wait: The duck's not the only one who's about to be surprised!
This silly book is told with only three words but an abundance of visual expression and panache. It's a hilarious take on the adage "What goes around comes around," and a refreshing, kid-friendly story of brains over brawn.

Book Description
"I give you ten days, starting today. I will show you all you need to see. It is up to you
"
Matt Thomson's life has become a bad joke. With Christmas just around the corner, he's lost his job, his car, his house, his wife and kids, and even the front door key to his buddy's attic room where he now sleeps. Matt is a hair's breadth from a leap off a high bridge into the welcome oblivion of icy waters. But a seemingly random encounter with a coffee shop Goddess instead dumps Matt into the lap of a very unlikely guru.
Meet Joey Murphy: ex-Merchant Marine, entrepreneur, teacher, wild man. His idea of a good time is playing Blind Man's baseball on the edge of a cliff. Joey takes Matt on the roller-coaster ride of his life, a ten day adventure dodging cop cars, debunking Mother Divine, visiting paradise artfully disguised as Taco Bell, and trading intimate secrets with total strangers.
Matt is reluctantly forced to shed old ideas like so many layers of skin, and he comes to love and trust his nemesis in the process. Joey does succeed in showing Matt most of what he needs to see, but in the end it is up to Matt to discover the ultimate punch-line for himself.
Customer Reviews:
Bold and trippy.......2007-05-18
Matt's life has fallen apart. He is suicidal. At a restaurant a waitress tunes-in to his distress and leaves a phone number for him to call. Soon he is at satsang with Joey who senses Matt is ripe for awakening. Guru Joey says to Matt: "...if you truly understand what has been running you, you can be free. That is your birthright, to enter a life beyond desire and your fear, and to discover real blessedness. I give you ten days, starting today. I will show you all you need to see. It is up to you. Come back tomorrow."
The Last Laugh is an over-the-top entertaining and transformative experience. Within this book is a memorable character, the nondually elfin Joey Murphy, perhaps named for the Joke of existence for which he stands, one Irishman under Ramana, indivisible, with liberation and chocolate cake for all. (You see, Joey is enamored with all things chocolate, which seems to anchor him to this world.) There is the other main character Matt, and a collection of interesting and well-defined friends, fiends, family and followers.
The Guru Joey is so successfully supple in society and within the culture of his time that he is delightfully reminiscent of Forrest Gump. In fact, there is no single Guru upon whom Joey is modeled. He is Forrest Gump and Byron Katie. Ramana and author Arjuna Ardagh. The author mentions other teachers who are part of the tapestry making up Joey, yet I'm not familiar with all of them.
In Joey's life he sat with Ramana who spoke profoundly to Joey, and Joey worked in the kitchen of Ramana's Ashram for three months. Ramana essentially instructed Joey to spread the teaching -- "That which you are is That which you love" -- to the Western world.
We learn that Joey cavorted with Marilyn Monroe, President Kennedy, Fritz Perls and an assortment of other famous and not so famous personalities. Joey was even there when two guys were building a computer in their garage. Turns out Joey coined the term "mouse" and conceived of the graphical user interface.
It was during his time with Ramana that Joey gained the wisdom that is core to his success: "I learned that's how you get along with people. You just put yourself aside and meet them in who they are." That most usable wisdom is applied throughout the story and through it Joey meets many people of import in his time and place, and directly impacts world and cultural events, as well as little day to day encounters, each with equal import and attention.
Anyone who has seen author Arjuna Ardagh practice, sees that wisdom in practice. The same is true with another teacher upon whom Joey is strongly based: Byron Katie. The author pays tribute to Byron Katie's transformative influence with the introduction of the character Katie, a secretary to a major property developer (Byron Katie was herself a property developer). Joey marries Katie and Katie eventually convinces President Kennedy not to go to war with Cuban during a time of crisis. These kinds of bold story elements are glaring signals that transformation happens and that ordinary people can align with qualities conducive to it.
The related implicit teaching that these incredulous story elements point to, is that the Guru is present everywhere, influencing everything as Grace. The book could be viewed as a humorous exploration of Grace in which there are explicit teachings which open the individual to Grace and allow anyone to tap into one or another mode of influence within their world.
And that -- transformation -- is what the book is about. The book succeeds on that level. It has to, because the author is already functioning in that mode as a teacher and living being. He couldn't keep the transformation message and power out if he tried. What Ramana told Joey -- "That which you love is That which you are. You will share it wherever you go, you have no choice. But you are an American boy; you are not Indian. It will share itself in an American way." -- is something the author already knows about himself, about Byron Katie, and a number of today's spiritual teachers. They have no choice but to share in a way that is transformative. Readers of The Last Laugh can receive that sharing.
There is a lot happening in this book. In ten days devotee Matt becomes enlightened and the reader learns ten lessons. Big changes happen quickly and broadly and are patched together like a funky shag carpet backed with the integrity of explicit and implicit teachings. The Last Laugh is a fun, splashy, bold, and trippy read.

funny and wise...........2004-04-03
Cleanly written and funny, this is a classic tale of awakening, twenty first century style. Arjuna never falters in his deceptively simple telling of the tale of Matt and his teacher Joey, a tale he tells with the expertise of a skilled surgeon. I loved the book for its straightforward wisdom, laughing and crying along with the adventures and misadventures of Matt on his road to freedom. A good down to earth story that reaches way beyond what most of us think of as everyday reality.
Inspiring. A wonderful book!

Book Description
Laugh in the face of death! That’s what this bold, brash, and often irreverent collection of epitaphs encourages readers to do. It offers more than just the deceased’s name and dates of birth and death, plus a touching phrase in memorial. Instead, every fascinating quote presents an unexpectedly cheeky perspective on the tragic, like this one from Uniontown, New Jersey: “Here lies the body of Jonathan Blake; stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake.”
Some come from the gravestones of the famous: Bette Davis’s proudly notes that “she did it the hard way.” Each thought-provoking line makes an indelible contribution to our folklore.

Pleasent reading and funny........2007-05-06
Great book and covers the subject very well, was really a pleasure to read.
Good for a chuckle.......2007-03-09
I don't think any of the quotes in this book will cause you to laugh to you cry, but you will get a few laughs from some of the quotes and find the rest pretty amusing. A bit overpriced, but worth it if this is a subject you find interesting.

I am a Swiss real estate promoter and I constantly look for
good reference material. this book is so easy to read
and understand. I love the sample forms, which have been
very useful on numerous occasions. Many of my customers have
purchased this book from me, so as to learn more about the
American/Floridian rite of purchase. It's a wonderful book,
well illustrated, that teaches you everything you have to
know in real estate.

Savvy Spies Swoon, Shoot and Scoot.......2006-11-15
I have no idea if LAST LAUGH, MR. MOTO ever made it to the silver screen, but it should have. Marquand wrote a perfect script for a tropical sleaze B movie (make that C). Every detail is perfect for a Humphrey Bogart starring role. The American drinking himself away in seedy bars gets tapped to take some suspicious characters for a long sail in his yacht. The "wife" of the charterer, who himself has a funny accent, falls in love with this dirty Yank immediately, for what reason I could not tell. But whoa, he turns out to be an ex-navy officer and a pilot to boot; he can throw a mean punch, and outsmart every bad guy, even thought they are professional secret agents and he's been addling his brain with booze for a few years. A wily Oriental (oh, God, he even says "so sorry" a million times) weaves his way in and out of the pages, a murder or two, a pompous British colonial cop without a clue, a local Jamaican who is called `boy' and is bug-eyed in half the scenes, and of course, a pseudo-Swedish gorilla who turns out to be a Nazi. Caribbean hi-jinx during the early years of World War II, deserted islands, secret weapons, they know that I know that they know that I know.....it's all here, folks. All you have to do is get hold of a copy, sink back into your (hopefully worn-out) sofa and take yourself back to another America, another world, when bad guys were bad, good guys never got shot, and French ladies were soooooooo elegant. The only thing is I never figured out why Mr. Moto got the last laugh. Oh, well, you can't have everything.
This book is part of a series by Marquand, so if you like it, there's a lot more. Go for it !

So Funny.......2007-04-02
I thought this was one of the funniest romances I've ever read. When a fever leaves their father witless, Syrah and Eben of the 9th House, find their home invaded by their awful cousin Gyp. Gyp produces a forged bethrothal and attempts to force himself on Syrah. Syrah sends three missives to the king of the Dominion and when he fails to help them she stages the drowning of Eben, several servants and herself until she can form a plan to retake their house. That plan ends up being to kidnap Crown Prince Jibril whom Syrah has always secretly loved for enough gold to hire a mercenary to rid them of Gyp. Syrah, Eben and their very imaginitave and dramatic maid manage to actually kidnap Jibril by drugging his wine and then sneaking him out in a coffin with the dreaded plague markings on it. Using their wits they manage to elude capture and hide him away on the Island of Lost Souls. When Jibril finally comes around he realizes that a small group of amateurs (two women and a young boy) have kidnapped him and his pride is wounded. He knows he is in no danger and is intrigued by the lady who leads the pack. Although they all wear hoods he is intrigued by her and after his release when he realizes who is captor was, he decides he will track her down and marry her. The only problem is his father decides to use Syrah and her brother Eben to bait the evil Gyp into showing his hand. When it appears as though Jibril has betrayed her, Syrah's heart is broken. When she realizes she is being used as bait, Syrah decides to have the last laugh and save the day her own way.
the characters in this book are so funny I couldn't stop laughing. Eben's outrageously imaginative stories get them out of more than one bind and Syrah's maid Mayenne's wild fantasies of ravishment and torture are hilarious. I loved this book.
Lots of Chuckles in this Debut - Fun Read.......2005-03-29
In her delightful debut, Klassel has created a middle ages historical setting in the kingdom of Dominion comprised of lesser twenty-seven different domains called Houses. This story centers on Lady Syrah, the eldest daughter of the Ninth House, who has made repeated requests of the king to protect her and her brother from the evil machinations of their cousin, who has used the debilitating illness of her father as an excuse to move in and take over their castle and domain. After the cousin makes attempts to force himself on Syrah, using a forged betrothal document her addled father doesn't remember signing, she escapes along with her brother, father and a couple of loyal family retainers. Dropping out of sight, they concocted a ruse that made it look as though the family had perished at sea.
Determined to regain the family estate for the young brother Eben, whom she felt responsible for, the two siblings devised an elaborate and wholly amusing plan to kidnap Jibril, the crown prince of Dominion and ransom him back to the king whom Syrah believed had forsaken her. The plan was to raise enough funds to hire a mercenary to oust her evil cousin from their home and regain it for her brother. The fact that Jibril had been the love of Syrah's young life (charmingly described in the prologue) ever since she met him at the age of 13, her treatment of him as her prisoner was a total joy as they matched wits against one another in both games of chess and love!
*** In reading SHE WHO LAUGHS LAST, the debut novel for Jennie Klassel, it was certainly easy to see why she was the winner in the National Contest sponsored by Romantic Times Bookclub and publishing. She created dynamite characterizations from the lead protagonists right down to the lowliest of guards and maids who were so totally endearing that it would be hard to say just who you liked the best - and believe me there were an enormous amount of secondary characters here to choose from as well as the two totally delightful leads. I have to admit that the 14-year-old brother Eben with his tall tales, usually centering around dromedaries, was so funny I often found myself chuckling out loud. Lady Syrah was a totally divine lead who was fashioned brilliantly with intelligence, a lovely sensual aura, and a charming sense of humor. The entire ensemble of supporting characters, a beautiful plot, and vivid sensual emotions, made this a fun read and a book that I can highly recommend. --- Marilyn, for www.romancedesigns.com ---
A wily heroine, gold, and chamber pots--a lot of fun!.......2004-04-14
I enjoyed this book very much. Historical romance that moves along a a fast clip, and keeps you guessing what will happen next. The characters are superbly written and that's what made the story so appealing--I was rooting for Lady Syrah from page one. Any story that can make such humorous use of stinky chamber pots has my vote! Only a few flaws kept this book from being perfect for me.
I wanted to like this book, but..........2004-01-01
I liked the pseudo-historical world the author built. I initially found the characters and the plot engaging. That said, I really had a problem with some of the heavy-handed attempts at humor. There were humorous moments in the story, certainly, but there were quite a few others that just fell flat. The author would have the characters laughing and rolling around on the ground, but the humor just wasn't there. It felt forced. And the bits where the characters were saying things like "Har, har, har" and "Hee, hee, hee" were plain dumb.
Worse, though, was the fact that the author spent the whole book building up the heroine as a tactical genius just this side of Alexander the Great -- and making sure that the other characters acknowledged it -- only to have the hero and his allies do everything BUT enlist her help for the last half of the book. Yes, she's a woman, but that excuse fell flat as soon as they told her dim-bulb maid what was going on but still didn't tell the heroine. It just didn't make sense that they would go to such pains to keep her in the dark. It did nothing to increase her safety, nor did it make their plans more likely to succeed. In fact, by deliberately excluding her -- and, since she's this genius, of COURSE she's gonna figure it out -- they made her much likely to go off on her own and do something they totally won't expect. I know that we needed to have a bit more tension between the hero and heroine at that point, but to artificially preserve it in this way ruins the story.
I wanted to like this book, and some of the characters were quite interesting. But its flaws REALLY annoyed me.
BRAVA, BRAVA MS. KLASSEL.......2003-08-10
What a pleasant and great surprise to find this debut novel. Set in the middle ages somewhere (probably near Constantinople??), this is an adventure/romance with a super hero and absolutely great heroine. The plot involves the struggle of Lady Syrah to regain her family lands and title for her younger brother. In order to get the necesary funds to hire mercenaries for the job, she kidnaps Crown Prince Jibril of the realm (with whom she has secretly been in love with since meeting him when she was 13) and holds him for ransom. An so the fun begins...
This is a great novel, with fully-realized supporting characters, including Syrah's 14-year-old brother Eben (who spins hilarious detailed tall tales), wily and wise King Ahriman, an African "mercenary" Zebengo, and a lady's maid who has hysterical sexual fantasies at every moment.
But the star of this book is Syrah...who play's an expert game of chess...I won't say more - JUST READ THE BOOK!!
