SURPRISE, SURPRISE.......2007-05-10
I was surprised at this book in Marilyn's own words. This interview was only a few weeks before her death. The pictures were amazing and beautiful. She did not seem at all depressed and was looking forward to the future. Makes you wonder if she was murdered. Surely seems that way after I read the book and looked at those pictures. It almost seems to say "see I want to live" and little did she know that her life was in danger! Poor Marilyn. I hope wherever she is, she knows that some people believe that she did not kill herself. And I hope she is at peace.
Always love Miss. Monroe.......2007-03-25
This book is unique in that it comes from George Barris's last days spent with her. I love the photos because they are candid not posed. This bok also includes the last photo ever taken of her. I'm on my way to own almost every Marilyn book and Im am pleased with this one.
Norma Jean the woman you thought you knew........2006-08-26
I have to say that it is just amazing how after 44 years Marilyn Monroe is still considerd one of the most beautiful women to ever live. After seeing the photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken by Mr. Barris in this book I am not suprised that people are still captivated with the beauty of Marilyn Monroe. The pictures of Marilyn in this book are amazing and beautiful. Marilyn shows her true character in the most natural looking pictures I have ever seen of her. Each picture tells a story and shows you the woman Marilyn really was. Marilyn truely was a naturally beautiful woman and it shows in this book. This great book also lets you read and learn about the real person Marilyn Monroe was in her own words. Marilyn tells her life story in this book, taking you through her young years as Norma Jean to her Hollywood life as Marilyn Monroe. When you are reading this book it is very interesting to hear Marilyn talk about her life in her own words. Marilyn takes you along her life journey through the pages in this book. The only sad thing is when you are reading this book you wish Marilyn's life story would continue past the inevitable days of Marilyn's death on August 4-5,1962. I alreadly knew Marilyn was going to die before reading but it really made me sad because after reading this book it makes you feel like you actually knew Marilyn personally. That just goes to show how well written this book is. I have to say Mr. Barris you have done a great job writing this excellant book. Marilyn would truely have been happy with this book. Whether you are a Marilyn Monroe fan or you are just curious about this iconic Hollywood actress this book will definitely be intresting to read. Before I read this book I thought Marilyn Monroe was all Hollywood glitz and glamour. After reading this book however I found that Marilyn was a sweet down to earth woman who just wanted to be loved. I only hope Marilyn made it into heaven, because in her life most of the people that said they loved her and called themselves her friend only used and betrayed Marilyn. I hope that one day Marilyn's death will finally be proven as murder and this case of wrong doing can be closed so Marilyn can finally rest in peace.
A Touching Tribute to Marilyn.......2006-06-09
This was indeed a touching tribute. I felt very connected to Marilyn while reading her stories. The photos were just as gorgeous. I could have gone without George Barris' interjections as they usually just repeated what Marilyn said. But it was his book and she was apparently his friend, so I suppose he deserves some spotlight too.
Add this to your Monroe collections! It's a definite keeper.
"Terriffic, excellent and up close and personal look at the legend!".......2006-02-06
When this book was released, I did not know, that one day I would be the proud owner of numerous items that are shown in this book (like the orange Pucci, pants, and the white hooded bathingrobe, which was the LAST PIECE Monroe would wear alive{stated by her housekeeper Eunice Murray in her book!}), and which are worn by Marilyn Monroe. I bought them at Christie's in'99; an auction which was also attended by Mr. Robert W. Otto, who claims to have so many private items of Marilyn Monroe, and because they are PRIVATE he has no pictures of all the "junk" he is displaying(like so called Marilyn Monroe's hair rollers with hair attached - which are REALLY made in 1974 - 12 years after MM's tragic death!)This is a huge scandal & fraud! Look at this book, Mr. Otto! The items are ALL private items! And they were offered at Christie's! Why did you not buy ONE item there and now claim to have such an extensive and real collection, when you have not ONE photo of MM wearing any of your "personal items!" This book is so important, as George Barris (I met him several times in recent years during the memorial service for Miss Monroe each August 5th) really loved Marilyn, and that reflects in his photos! MM really seemed to have fun taking these amazing shuts. I do not agree that he took the LAST shot ever of MM, as also Bert Stern claims. Those were actually taken by Allan Grant! This book really is a must for any starting collector and also for the collector who claims to have "one of the biggest collection of MM memorabilia"! Maybe on MM dolls, plates, paper cut outs, wines, books about MM and magazines...?!
Thank you so much Mr. Barris, for such an important, and intersting piece, for the authentication of my MM treasures, in the puzzle that is called: Marilyn Monroe!

FIVE STARS FOR ANTHONY SUMMERS!.......2006-12-28
WOW! As an avid reader of Marilyn Monroe books I have finally stumbled across the most in-depth and personal account of this truly unique woman. I finished this book in 3 days! It's an absolute page turner and you are sure to discover many things that will shock you. By the end of the book I was emotionally attached to Marilyn. The very last chapters will leave you in desperate longing to help Marilyn, yet in utter frustration with her and everyone in her life. Why such a tragic ending for an immaculate screen goddess? The real tragedy is that she never realized the consequences of her actions. Her lifestyle- non-stop drugs & sexual promiscuity- destroyed any ounce of hope & future that was awaiting her. This book teaches many lessons and unfortunately, the most beautiful woman in the world lost her life in the process. Then there's the question of her death being a murder. - I hope that one day the truth comes out so that dignity and respect can finally be given to woman who was stripped of everything during her lifetime, but her soul. *A Hollywood drama till the very end.*

Pulitzer for Research!.......2005-09-24
I bought this book after reading the 2005 LA Times story of the police medical examiner who believes Monroe did not kill herself. He believes she was administered a morphine overdose by suppository. Also, the psychiatrist who was very close to Monroe at her death and was criticized for this closeness believed the same theory. In the LA Times article, this book was mentioned as a definitive journal of her life and death. Also, it alluded that the psychiatrist's statements were shared with this author and in this book. Therefore, on that recommendation that this was the definitive Marilyn Monroe book, I felt a need to understand and investigate her life and death.
I was not disappointed. I remain absolutely amazed at the completeness of the research involved in this book. Be forewarned this is not a short read. But it is well worthwhile. He completely documents disagreements in sources and presents clearly his beliefs based upon the research. An important fact from early and mid-life that I had never seen emphasized was exactly how few movies she made at the end of her life, something like only 5 in the last 10 years. In my 52 year lifetime, Marilyn clearly had the most unique combination of sex and innocence that drew people in. It's difficult to describe her appeal. Probably closest would be Pamela Anderson who unfortunately feels the need to wear massive make-up hiding the very attractive wholesome girl she was when initially discovered. Much like Marilyn.
But where this book is at its best is describing the DiMaggio/Miller marriages, the many close friendships late in her life and what they expose about her potential suicide, the Kennedy relationships and ultimately her death. These story lines are so engrossing that it is difficult to put the book away for the night but the book is such a time commitment that it's not the type to be read in a few hours.
I cannot stress how detailed is the research on the last three years of her life including Sinatra, Lawford and the Kennedys. Based upon all the exhaustive research, I still believe this was a suicide. She had tried too many times before and sadly, was totally addicted to narcotics. What is more interesting is her relationship with the Kennedy's. But would they really have been involved in foul play when at that time the press ignored politician affairs? Marilyn's life is a great tragedy and this book does a fabulous job of summarizing. I strongly recommend this book if you have any interest in this icon. Be forewarned. This is not a quick weekend read but well worth the hours spent.
Possibly the most complete that it can get.......2003-03-26
There will never be "the definitive" Marilyn Monroe biography without the intimate contributions of husbands No. 2 and 3, Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller. Even if the fabled playwright shares publicly his life with filmdom's eternal goddess, DiMaggio never did and, obviously, never will. Still, this contribution by Anthony Summers, first published in 1984, may be as close as it gets. In his acknowledgements, Summers claims a near-obsession that consumed almost two years of his life. Little wonder: he claims and minutely credits and cites more than 600 subjects who were interviewed in the course of his research. About the only criticism that can be lodged is the book's title. Implying we're about to read nothing more than the sexual conquests of the world's most famous woman of her time, we instead get a thoroughly comprehensive life history that begins even before her birth June 1, 1926, and continues well beyond her death that swelteringly hot August night in 1962. In between, thanks to Summers' prose and sources whose claims were checked and rechecked for confirmation, we get something that few other writers have achieved, much less attempted: a psycho-biograhy that explains the reasons for the legendary insecurity that Norma Jean Baker could never quite overcome even as the world's most desired woman. Even in his passages about the amazing but all-too-short film career, Summers manages to keep us focused on Norma Jean and her reality behind the facade that was Marilyn. Of course, Summers has to deal with his subject's still conroversial death, and "The Candle Burns Down," the segment of the book that centers on Monroe's final days, is so detailed that Summers' own explanation for Marilyn's death sounds as plausible as any theory posited. No, he doesn't buy into the theory that she was murdered by the mob or Kennedy operatives, but that her death was an accidental overdose of Seconals. But Summers does submit that Monroe was cruelly exploited sexually and passed sexually from one Kennedy brother to the other, one the president and the other the attorney general, and that it was Robert Kennedy who found the overdosed star in her home and arranged for the ambulance to the hospital and, after her death en route, covered up his involvement with the help of brother-in-law Peter Lawford. Summers' exhaustively researched finished product distinguishes itself from most other Monroe books in that he doesn't exploit his subject's insecurity and private demons or sexual prowess. Instead, Monroe is treated here with dignity and respect and, in the end, we are left with the feeling that we have read Norma Jean's life history, not that of a creation named Marilyn. And it is on Norma Jean's fears that prevented her alter-ego from recognizing her own worth as both a person and actress that accounts for the legend that is Marilyn Monroe. Summers' book is an important contribution to the literature that seeks to explain and understand the fragile psyche of this truly and tragically wounded soul.
Great book.......2003-01-26
Great book : reliable, serious, honest. That brilliant journalist succeeds in giving us a correct image of the Marilyn's life.
However he shouldn't have shown a photograh of her dead : she has the right to be respected in death.

For hardcore Marilyn fans.......2002-08-28
I read this book back in high school when it first came out in hardcover (I'm really dating myself here). Back then I was a Marilyn Monroe fanatic. Every book, movie, poster, magazine, or collectable I could find, I bought.
I must say that I'm still a huge Marilyn fan and have well over 50 books written about her. To this day, Goddess is still the best written, most profound, well meant, and indepth attempt of portraying her story. If you call yourself a Marilyn fan, then there is no question about it. You must read this book.
Witnesses, documents, and photos (including her heartbreaking autopsy photo) will add to the text and leave you breathless.

The Big Red Book.......2000-08-19
"Marilyn Monroe: The Life, The Myth" is the kind of book that fans of Ms. Monroe love. It is filled with wonderful photographs, some unique and rare. There are numerous pictures of foreign magazine covers, as well. The biography is divided and shared by various essayists. This is a wonderful technique, for it shows how deeply Marilyn Monroe touched many lives. This is one of my favorite books on Marilyn Monroe.
A rare find........2000-07-09
This fine and oversized book is a MUST for any Marilyn collector. Unfortunately there are very few copies of this book in existance. If you have been searching for this book and are not able to find it (as I did for two years) here is why: The book was published by Rizzoli in Italy and the publisher was sued for copyright infringement soon after it's release. The remaining copies were ordered off the shelves. There are NO plans to reprint the book at this time. It is an excellent book full of foreign magazine covers and news articles which most of us would otherwise never get to see. It also includes pictures I have not seen in other books before. If you are interested in this book try searching for it as used and rare. This book is well worth two or three hundred dollars, more for a serious collector. In a few years it may be worth as much as a first edition of the Complete Last Sitting in English rather than the more common German edition. If you find a copy, buy as many as you can and please pass them on to other true fans.

the uncensored story of marilyn monroe is not here it is in here i am mother.......2006-06-01
Here i am mother by nancy miracle is the only uncensored story of the human behind the image Mr. Guiles tells the same old story and never researched beyond the newspapers but he tried i suppose the only person who knows and is able to reveal the copyrighted story is her daughter nancy miracle a playwright and member of the dramatists guild
blonde, beautiful, and doomed..........2003-08-21
I seem to have read the Marilyn Monroe biograhpies backward, because so many of the ones I've already read (including Norman Mailer's, Gloria Steinem's, and Barbara Leaming's) used Guiles' _Legend_ (or his first Marilyn book, _Norma Jean_) as a reference and guide. This book is truly incredible for its in-depth look into a confusing, tragic life; especially since Marilyn often embellished her past.
I especially enjoyed Guiles' treatment of her decline. He never judged; he was sympathetic and kind about her lateness, dependence on drugs, and occasional fits of bitchiness. Unlike other biographers, Guiles didn't place all that much emphasis on her barbituate addiction, which I felt was kind of refreshing. Her death was handled eloquently, steering the reader toward a suicide verdict, carefully negating other reports.
I have only a couple of minor complaints; I think if I could I would give the book 4 1/2 stars. Twice near the beginning of his biography, Guiles points out that Marilyn was "not naturally pretty." He said it about Norma Jeane when she was starting to model, and again about Marilyn after some of her plastic surgery. How could he say that? It just seems like an odd statement to make about the greatest sex symbol of all time, especially because of her vulnerable, luminous quality. Also, regarding her marriage to Jim Dougherty, it seemed that Guiles took every word Jim said as gospel, when he would have as much reason as Marilyn to embellish that situation to his benefit (and no more proof than she had, and of course when Jim wrote his book, she was already dead).
On the whole, this is the best book on Marilyn Monroe, comparable only with Donald Spoto's biography. I recommend it to all readers, not simply people who are already Marilyn fans.
Powerful and Moving.......2000-02-14
Mr. Guiles again gives an in-depth and touching, personal, human side in his biography of Marilyn Monroe. I highly recommend this book, and all his Hollywood biographies to anyone who wants to learn about the story behind the famous and beautiful faces on the silver screen.
Speaking as fellow Platinum Blonde this book was...........2000-02-07
Awesome! I loved every page, I read with a desire! This book had so much information on Marilyn Monroe it was scary. It gives the 411 on all her stories and how she came to be-and die- one of the most glamourus women in Amercan Culture ever! The devine Ms. M's fairy tale started out by chance, and gives light on how Marilyn really was and how she came to be. I would recomend this book to everyone!
Customer Reviews:
A novice kind of book; MM as an actress. BRAVO! ENOCRE Mr. Rollyson!.......2007-02-27
there is not much i can say about this book, that seems to be the case when something is of high excellence. this book explains mm's methods of acting, and how she'd prepare for her roles. it also does so while giving info where she was in her life. so that makes it unboring. i couldn't put the book down. i read it and i am going to read it again. as an aspiring actress, it has become my bible, so to speak. the author has obviously researched extremely and he is commended. it is written very intelligently and concise. i think this is an excellent book for someone who wants to mimic MM like an impersonator. i also liked the texture of the book and paper. it seems different.lol. mr. rollyson wrote a review (hi!!) saying there has been more info since his writing of this book. i hope he writes another one, a 2nd one. i will be the first to buy it! thank you for your excellent, helpful book. (i knew, like 99% of the world, that there was something extremely special and unique about MM's acting and you have described about it) :- )
Marilyn Monroe: A Life of the Actress.......2000-12-07
As mentioned by the author, there have been a significant number books that have been written about the acting performances of Miss Monroe; however, Mr. Rollyson's book is written in depth and with candor regarding her method of study and acting. I found that there was a thorough analysis of her films, not just a brief overview. This is one book that should be found in every Monroe afficionado's library, especially those who are truly interested in her acting style and method. A very interesting and enjoyable read.
The only biography to carefully assess Monroe's acting........1998-02-19
I wrote this biography at a time when no biography had shown how Monroe approached her screen roles. I developed a vocabulary for assessing her acting, particularly her major roles from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes to The Misfits. Much new information has been uncovered since I wrote my book, but I don't think any writer has surpassed my treatment of her life as an actress.

A book to pass on if you're a Marilyn fan........2007-05-14
This would make a good fiction book... but as a factual book Marilyn it falls very short. I read this out of curiousity from the library, and I cannot tell you how glad I am that I did not buy this. There are so many errors in the timeline and such that I wondered if Mr Jordan did ANY research at all during the writing of this book.
Some of the pictures are cute, but that's the best aspect of the book. If you love Marilyn and are a stickler for facts and the truth- don't bother with this book.
Another Attempt to Gain Money and Notoriety at Marilyn's Cost.......2006-08-01
This is one of the least believable books about the life of Marilyn Monroe, which purports that the author was an intimate lover and friend to MM. By the way, Marilyn's father of record, Martin Edward Mortensen died in 1981 at age 85 of heart failure. The NY Times reported he had in possession a copy of his divorce papers from Gladys and a copy of MM's birth certificate.... Wouldn't it be nice if people would do a little research before they write this stuff and call it a 'memoir'?
If I could rate this a -2, I would. There are many superb biographies of Marilyn available. This isn't one of them.
Ted Jordan must have stepped on the wrong toes........2006-01-01
It has been several years since I read this book--well, 10 to be honest. Recently I looked it up again, and was appalled to see all of the smearing now on the net and directed at Ted Jordan. Among the most outrageous allegations is that he claimed to have fathered a child with MM. Certainly this claim is nowhere in this book. A more moderate allegation is that she aborted the child. I dont remember this incident either in the book, though I may be wrong here. What is saddest, however, is the claim Ted wrote the book just to capitalize. If this were true, he would have thrown fuel on the conspiracy fire, not done a very effective job of dousing it. This is the one book I have ever read about anything that made me forget any conspiracy theory in this American culture.
I remember the book as being amazingly well crafted for a work apparently written without a ghost helper. I remember being impressed that Ted took the time to write this book more than 20 years after Marilyn's death. I remember its giving the warm, fuzzy feeling that I really was there--not just a voyeur. I remember having the same feeling as Ted when the news of Marilyn's suicide came over my car radio one quiet Sunday morning. Most of all, the book was written with real feeling--a rare commodity in American literature. Even if the whole book is a lie, THIS MAN REALLY CARED. If you want to come away thinking you really understood anyone, this is one of the most satisfying, matter of fact, biographies ever written. Perhaps that is why mainstream Hollywood is so determined to rub it out. Jordan's quiet narration is more compelling than a whole room full of media caterwauling. Some of Jordan's pictures are almost naive in their simplicity. Do not expect to be unreasonably titillated, one brief passage where a 17 year old Marilyn asks Ted for sex on their first date excepted. Thank, Ted Jordan, you for a job extraordinarily well done. Marilyn, "As long as there are men that read and eyes that see--so long lives this, and this gives life to thee."
Questionable... Read with a grain of salt........2005-05-21
Ted Jordan may have been, as he claims, the most important man in Marilyn's life. However, he offers very little supporting evidence of this. He tells many interesting stories about Marilyn, and what it was like to make love to her. However, when it comes to illustrating the woman herself, he is somewhat less than generous. According to him, she had absolutely no talent. This is something that anyone who has ever seen Bus Stop or The Misfits knows to be false. Perhaps she did sleep her way to the top, as so many of her generation did. I cannot deny or affirm this. All I know is, for someone who claims to have been Marilyn's best friend, Jordan has not been particularly generous. On the back of the book, he promises a catalogue of Marilyn's strengths and weaknesses. I see plenty of praise, but only in the form of Marilyn's body and sexual prowess. This is not exactly new information. He also attests that Marilyn despised hard work and refused to go to any classes, which is completely against fact. He completely ignores one of the saddest parts of Marilyn's existence; her desire to be a real actress, and her fear that the world was laughing at ehr for her sexuality. She stopped doing films for a period to attend public acting classes, which Jordan makes absolutely no mention of. Jordan seems more concerned with expressing how, if Marilyn had only listened to him in every respect, all would have been better. The book is an expanded outlet for gossip and self-exaltation. What truth may be in it seems slanted. Read with caution, if you must read.
Truth and Love.......2004-05-27
I was deeply moved by this book and would like to thank the author somehow for 'putting it all out there'. Behind every great man is a great woman. Thanks Ted!

Norma Jean.......2003-04-01
The first thing that struck me was the numerous personal photographs in the center of the book, including the calender page of 'golden girl'. When I had time to read, I picked it up and started, from then on unable to put it down [as an avid reader this is a HUGE compliment to the writer]. I was to finish the almost 400 pages in less than 3 days. It was the BEST biography I have EVER read. It is a classic, heart wrenching tale about the personal struggles of a beautiful and sensitive woman. I am now a HUGE fan of hers, and I feel honored to have had a glimpse into her soul [through this book]. Also, the book is beautiful looking, with a simple gold script Norma Jean on the hard cover, hot pink inside the covers, beautifully haunting images in the center.
I can't imagine finding another biography of her that can even come close to comparing. It changed my life.
Norma Jean is as much about an era as a person.......1998-03-19
With careful attention to the social climate of her life Marilyn Monroe's pscyhe is revealed as tellingly as her body was in the famous calender photos. Norma Jean addresses the inevitability of Monroe's multiple marriages and disintegration into depression. The reader will empathise with this driven young woman who seemed to "have it all" and tragically had nothing. The lonely childhood and increasingly isolated adult years of Monore are presented against the backdrop of a world that idolized her without sympathizing with her. The book is a great read for femenist, film buffs, Monroe fans and anyone interested in Tweniteth century American culture.
