Book Description
A gorgeous gift and a landmark work that is an essential addition to everyone's personal library.
Never before have the four great works of Charles DarwinVoyage of the H.M.S. Beagle (1845), The Origin of Species (1859), The Descent of Man (1871), and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals (1872)been collected under one cover. Undertaking this challenging endeavor 123 years after Darwin's death, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward O. Wilson has written an introductory essay for the occasion, while providing new, insightful introductions to each of the four volumes and an afterword that examines the fate of evolutionary theory in an era of religious resistance. In addition, Wilson has crafted a creative new index to accompany these four texts, which links the nineteenth-century, Darwinian evolutionary concepts to contemporary biological thought. Beautifully slipcased, and including restored versions of the original illustrations, From So Simple a Beginning turns our attention to the astounding power of the natural creative process and the magnificence of its products. Slipcased hardcover; 101 illustrations, map.

Can't Beat It.......2007-04-03
I bought this book knowing very little about Darwin or his theories. From So Simple a Beginning was an easy read about a very interesting man. I would hope that not just supporters of evolution would read this book there is more to the man then just one theory.
Four classics.......2007-01-12
Excellent in every particular. Five stars in delivery time, condition, quality of the experience.
Wonderful writing wrong package.......2007-01-10
There is no gainsaying the writings of Darwin or the thinking of my favorite living scientist, E.O.Wilson. But the package is wrong.
Four books in one. Too heavy, too cumbersome. Discouraging.
Too big.......2007-01-05
This book is way too big to hold to read, so it is not useful. From the picture I thought I was ordering 4 different books in a book holder, not one giant book. I recommend buying them separately unless you have very strong arms and wrists.

Book Description
Information regarding population status and abundance of rare species plays a key role in resource management decisions. Ideally, data should be collected using statistically sound sampling methods, but by their very nature, rare or elusive species pose a difficult sampling challenge.
Sampling Rare or Elusive Species describes the latest sampling designs and survey methods for reliably estimating occupancy, abundance, and other population parameters of rare, elusive, or otherwise hard-to-detect plants and animals. It offers a mixture of theory and application, with actual examples from terrestrial, aquatic, and marine habitats around the world.
Sampling Rare or Elusive Species is the first volume devoted entirely to this topic and provides natural resource professionals with a suite of innovative approaches to gathering population status and trend data. It represents an invaluable reference for natural resource professionals around the world, including fish and wildlife biologists, ecologists, biometricians, natural resource managers, and all others whose work or research involves rare or elusive species.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful and illustrative!.......2007-01-19
I usually work with very elusive animals like wild big cats, that's why I consider this book very useful and ilustrative if you are planning to work with rare species; in special the experimental desing section. Also the cited bibliography is a great tool to expand knowledge in this subjet. I really recomend it!!

Book Description
The most up-to-date, comprehensive, and easy-to-use reference/guide to floriculture production. Covers all crop species and incorporates current and historic information from both the United States and international floriculture. Considers most of the potted flowering crops and greenhouse-grown cut flower species being produced today. Features full-length chapters on specific crop species and uses a consistent format in each chapter. Covers all uses of each species (e.g., potted flowering plant, cut flower, hanging basket, etc.), and provides general production information. Considers a variety of miscellaneous species for which relatively little production information exists. Uses nomenclature that follows The New Royal Horticultural Society Dictionary of Gardening. Features extensive tables (e.g., on propagation, production temperatures, tissue nutrient analysis, plant growth regulators, postharvest ethylene sensitivity, harvest stage, and storage temperatures of hundreds of species). For those involved in floriculture crop production and greenhouse management/operations.

A Brief Commentary on the value of this book.......2000-04-20
This book was used by my son Mark Luftig in a paper in his collage study in hortaculture. The information, details and little known facts this book has is simply amazing! For example, the paper mentioned was on the bulb family Hippeastrum. No other book (he had looked at over 30 other books in 4 different librarys) before he found this volume in the reference section on campus. Not only did it give information he had already gathered, but very specific information such as tempature needed to raise them, dormancy controls, media details and postharvest just to name a few. There are hundreds of other plants listed, all treated the same way. This enabled him to get his a very high mark on his paper as well as his final grade. It is very detailed and not for the weekend gardener but for the serious student or professional.

Customer Reviews:
Misleadingly quoted title of the book.......2006-05-03
As mentioned in the other customer reviews, this book is good in the large amount of big photos and is not for thorough information for each kind of fish included.
The number of species mentioned in the book, which is therefore critical for its value, is wrongly quoted both in the heading of this webpage and in the editor review as 800 species instead of the true 650 species as printed clearly on the book cover.
I think it should be corrected and not to mislead other to buy this valuable book disappointedly.
Needs more detail.......2002-12-25
This book isn't bad but it is really only useful for identifying species. If you need more information on the care and compatibility with other species look somewhere else.
A bit of everything in living color.......2000-01-11
This is my favorite book for browsing about species from not only the fish that I keep (ie African Cichlids), but also consider all the others. While the information isn't very deep, it certainly piques your interest because of the beautiful pictures. You can see many rare and exotic species captured here.
An excellent publication.......1999-06-11
This is a really well produced book that is full of beautiful photographs. The double page layout of similar species really helps when comparing closely related species. The text is informative but concise which is probably the book's only weak point. It only takes you a few seconds to read through the text for a species leaving you wanting to know more information.
REALLY top notch book!!.......1998-12-17
This book was a major motivating factor in my even becoming an Aquarist! Great, up to date information- Nice photos- Super-accurate descriptions of fish! Really nicely done!

Title says great for Homeowner, I disagree.......2007-04-26
Pictures are great and info is good too. My main complaint is the the book and index is arranged alphabetical by botanical name and not common name. There is no common name index or cross reference either. It does give common names on the individual pages, so you might find what you are looking for by browsing the 411 pages. I fail to see how this is homowner freindly unless you are a homeowner that happens to have have a degree in hortoculture.
A useful way to meet the Florida natives........2005-10-11
As an Northern imigrant gardener to the South Florida eco-system I have found Nelson's "Florida's Best Native Landscape Plants" a useful place to meet and get to know the Florida Natives for the following reasons.
1. He has narrowed the list to 200 of the most useful plants in Landscaping.
2. It is a reference book rather than a text book--using a useful format to describe each plant. The inclusion of a category for companion plants is very helpful in getting the right plant in the right place.
3. He presents a useful summary of the wisdom of using native plants--A point that seems so obvious to me but most imigrant gardeners and almost all plant suppliers and nursuries resist.
4. The layout of devoting 2 facing pages to each plant and including a close up view, a mid-range view and a full plant photo along with very well done illustrations is unique and very helpful.
What would I have liked that isn't there?
1. Foremost the biggest shortcoming is not providing a common name index. I support his decision to arrange by botanical name, and to include common name--but in this day of easily assembled indexing I find it a major shortcoming not to have included the common name index. The result is I need another book to find many of the plants--It is a combersome way to meet the natives--usually introduced by common or nick names. Apart from this shortcoming I would rate it a shiny five star.
Less significantly:
2. Most of the pictures appear to be taken in a non-homescape or landscape setting and many are not of professional quality
2. The format did not include or really allow space for more information on how to care for and use the plant.
I find it a useful but insufficient guide to "meeting the Florida natives."
Here is a horticultural treasure trove of choices.......2004-04-03
Florida residents and visitors to the state who want to embark on gardening projects for relatives will find Gil Nelson's Florida's Best Native Landscape Plants will provide them with a fine and knowledgeable overview of native plants available to the Florida gardener. Here is a horticultural treasure trove of choices, providing technical details on the design, maintenance, and use of a wide range of readily available native plants. The notes on companion plants are especially valuable.

Customer Reviews:
Choose your rose well...........2001-02-07
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ROSES is probably one of the best survey book about roses available. I'd give it 5-stars but it was written by a German for a German market and has been translated for American gardeners. Most of the factoids translate well, but I can help looking at the photos of Schneewittchen and remembering a tale I heard at a garden lecture about how this rose was named "Snow White" in Germany, and became "Iceberg" when it crossed the Atlantic. I don't know if the story is true, but my husband speaks German and when the white fluffy stuff falls he calls it "schnee."
ROSES contains a 20-page introduction on the history of the rose--a long history that could probably not be covered adequately in 500 pages. Markley provides a good synopsis with the ususal mention of the Apothecary Rose, the Wars of the Roses--with quotes from some of Shakespeare's plays, and a box insert on Malmaison and Josephine's love of roses. I knew the rose was symbolic of Mary, and that rosery beads where first made of rolled rose petals, but it's nice to be reminded.
The remaining 200 or so pages are devoted to the botony, horticulture, and growing needs of roses as well as a nice index filled with an annotated rose list consisting of those specimins Markley prefers. The information Markely provides about container growing, winter protection, planting and maintenance is extremely useful and detailed.
The photographs are pretty, but they have been doctored--the color intensified via a wash which makes the flowers appear out-of-focus. This is an unnecessary ammendment given the beauty of the roses--it appears the photos were in color to begin with. I don't know whether this is the result of inferior photography (in Germany??) or German pandering to stupid Americans who can't tell the difference, but it reminds me of the unscrupulous garden catalogs Allen Lacy complains about that alter the photographs of their stock to fool the consumer. Experienced gardeners know when they are looking at the real thing.
The book contains a listing of gardens in Germany where roses are grown, either as a featured plant or the main event. Not surprisingly, the author recommends you tour these gardens in summer. If you collect good garden books this is a useful addition for your collection. If you're an American gardener and can afford only one book, better stick to Taylor's Rose Book which contains useful information without obviously altered photos.
Encyclopedia of Roses.......2000-08-12
Beautiful pictures! A lot of information which was very well organized. I can't wait to put all this info to use in my garden!
