5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes mith Jerry Bruckheimer from Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-07-15

For every Pirates movie fan a must have. The Characters talking about things that happened during filming. You get to know them better by reading this, things that you never have read before in any other interview in magazines or on sites. Also very nice phatography by Jerry Bruckheimer. Pictures only published in this book. Whene you are reading this you get great respect for all those people who are working behind the scenes. Then you realise how huge the work is to build a set. You find very much information about how the movie comes to that what we see on the whitescreen. Enormous what a work is done to deliver these three movies for us to see. You read who created the final line "bring me that horizon" of the first movie.

Book Description

Step past the flashing lights into the true scene of the crime with Never Suck a Dead Man's Hand, a frank, unflinching, and unforgettable account of life as a crime scene investigator. Smart, sassy, and blessed--or cursed, depending on your point of view--with a stomach capable of working through the most horrific circumstances, Dana Kollmann details her true, unvarnished experiences as a CSI for the Baltimore County Police Department. Unlike the popular crime dramas proliferating on today's television networks, Kollmann's forensic tales forgo glitz for grit to show what really goes down once the yellow tape goes up.

With an informative, outspoken voice, Kollmann unveils the process and science of crime scene investigation in all its can't-take-your-eyes-away fascination. Whether explaining rigor mortis or the art of fingerprinting a stiff corpse on the side of the road, frantically brushing off a shower of roaches or pushing away a dead body, speeding to a horrific accident scene or cautiously entering a house of death, she shows what it's really like to work in the front lines as a forensics expert.

Vividly detailed and lightened by a disarming gallows humor, Dana Kollmann's true life-and-death experiences bring the sights, smells, and sounds of a crime scene alive as never before. She recounts stories that the cops and the CSI's usually leave on the field, far away from the delicate sensibilities of the average civilian--and forbidden from her family's dinner table. It's a strange world behind the yellow tape, and Never Suck a Dead Man's Hand offers a truly eye-opening perspective on the day-to-day life of a CSI.

5 out of 5 stars Ironic........2007-09-28

This book was intriguing, and especially for those of us brainwashed into believing the glamour behind crime scene investigation portrayed in television shows. Kickstart you into reality!

What's ironic, I went on a bus trip to New York City to see the Rockettes, and Dana came along with our group--she was friends and had worked with my sister-in-law's sister. So she was sitting there telling us all entertaining tales and gushing how excited she was her book was being published. Showed us the picture that would be on the jacket. I never thought anything of it 'til I saw it in a store, and how well it's doing. I spent four hours in a bus with something of a celebrity! And she's just as charming in real life, too. =)

Excellent, would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Never Suck A Dead Man's Hand.......2007-09-12

I am a police dispatcher with Baltimore County and this book is great! Of course I can really relate to what Dana has written. So funny and so true!! Great Job Dana!!

5 out of 5 stars This is what reallllllly happens..............2007-07-17

I was intrigued by the title just like you are. It's not a fake, get the book. I was lucky enough to see Ms. Kollmann in person at the library giving a talk on the book and I tell you she is even more entertaining in person. Forget what you see on CSI, ain't no tight skirts and button down shirts with chest hair on a real CSI scene....and what's that about 4 or 5 people teams going in at one time....nonsense. This book had me laughing out loud. Read it in two days and couldn't put it down. My recommendation is to get it. I might even try to go to a local CSI lab, just me and my dollar store trashcan with a liner.

5 out of 5 stars Paints a more realistic picture of CSI...........2007-06-27

Kollman did an OUTSTANDING job telling the tale of the crime scene investigator. It isn't CSI: Miami, and those who think the TV show even remotely resembles real-life CSI work need to pick up this book and read it. Unlike the CSI TV series, there is more gore than glamour to the job, and you can bet that Kollman was never found walking around in a death scene wearing heels and a business suit.

For those who are not experienced in crime scene investigation, as long as you can tolerate very graphic descriptions of dead bodies and such, then this will be a good book to start with to get an understanding of what is involved in the world of forensics.

For those of us who have done crime scene investigation, there are several sections where you will find yourself laughing, nodding your head with the familiarity of what she is describing, and you may experience a little deja vu!

Either way, this book is a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, Informative, and Eye-Opening.......2007-05-12

With both a sharp wit and a sharp tongue, Kollmann's descriptive and creative writing brings to life the dead and dismembered in a way that keeps you interested and wanting to know more. It's appropriate here when they say that the truth is stranger than fiction; she speaks of a line of work so glamorized by Hollywood that the scenes in her book are refreshingly plain and gruesome, laughable and gut-wrenching; for those truly interested in the work and science behind CSI, her details and her comparative analysis of the real world vs. that of Sara Sidle and Gil Grissom is educational and humbling.

I do wish there was more of her personal timeline in the field. She jumps around a bit but, given the book is not meant to be a biography, it is simply a personal desire to read more about her long, strange trip.

All in all, this is a fabulous book that delivers exactly what the title promises. I hope to see more like this from Kollmann on CSI, archaeological digs, and other forensic adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!.......2007-10-03

Dante "Danny" Valentine is angry, confused, has a bad past (what bounty hunter doesn't?), obsesses about her dead lover, and deals with her problems and feelings by trying to avoid them. She's no Buffy, although she does have a run-in with some vampires. All in all, an intelligent, well-thought-out universe, a rip-roaring story, and just enough confusion about what is going on in this future history to make you work harder to understand the motivations and actions of the characters. I wish I had written it!

3 out of 5 stars Dante's Dark Past.......2007-09-26

The novel is Dante's backstory served up with a serial killer murder mystery plot. The witty quips that gave the first novel panache are replaced by an atmosphere of serious angst at unspeakable deeds. Compared to the humor/action/drama balance of book one, this novel was more ordeal than enjoyment. It fills out the world of the Hegemony, but also introduces overdone supernatural elements like vampires (Nichtvren) and were(cain). An average novel, hoping later books are as good as the first.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it as much as the first one!.......2007-09-05

Love Dante's character in this series. Couldn't wait to read this sequel to Working for the Devil to find out what problems arose for her this go round! I was not disappointed. If you love Dante Valentine you'll love this one. Lot's of action, suspense, tears, anguish, pain, *happiness*...it was a read on the edge of your seat kinda book. The Devil has come looking for her again. Dark and edgy.

5 out of 5 stars Number 1 on My List.......2007-08-09

You can read any one of the 50 or 60 plot synopses on the reviewers page, but let me cut to the chase. This book is about grief: gut-wrenching, oh-god-make-it-stop, end-of-the-word grief.

Saintcrow's Dante Valentine is one of the most "beat-up" characters I've ever encountered in a book. She is so inundated by loss, she goes through the entire story afloat on a sea of emotional agony, most engendered by the loss she experienced in the last book (also a good read, but not as emotional), but much by the resurrected ghosts of her own past that she must deal with in this installment. Either way, Valentine's in a world of hurt, and Saintcrow's writing draws you into that pain, tosses you about on the waves, and lands you, cathartic, on surprisingly soft shore.

The story is fast-paced, the characters interesting and sympathetic, and the world enticing. This is dark urban fantasy at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2007-07-28

In Lilth Saintcrow's latest Dante Valentine novel, the scene is set for about a year later, several months and Dante is still mourning over the loss of Japh. She keeps his urn that is filled with his remains and tries to keep herself busy with hunts so that she won't think about Japh. Not that she needs the money that they provide, for she is still set for life from the devil's payment from last time.

But suddenly people Dante knows from her past are dying. They are the same people that suffered with her at the horrendous Rigger Hall and the devious and evil headmaster, who was brutally murdered by some of the students one fataful night and it is these setudents involved who are being killed. Dante doesn't want to take the case at first, because than she would be forced to remember Rigger Hall and all its horrors, but eventually complies. Still having Jace live with her, together they set out and do the research required to solve the case. But things start to getr serious.

For one thing the Devil has been calling upon her asking for Japh, who is dead. Dante is furious and confused by this. Why would he call asking for Japh, when it was he who killed him? As Dante gets closer to discovering the mystery behind the murders another death close to home occurs. It is then Dante has had enough and decides that she will do this hunt alone and finish it, even if she loses her own life. But when it comes to the final battle some unexpected help comes her way.

Overall a great book. At times it did run a little slow, like the characters were going in circles, but eventually after a few pages the action does pick up. The next Dante novel is due out in Sept. Then another in Nov. And the last one in Jan. 08!

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-09-17

I'm one of the artists featured in the book. I have to say this is one book that I'm proud to have my name attached. Too often "Art of" books smack of kissing up to the producers and above the line folks. This is an "art of" book that doesn't lie. It's just a bunch of art. Period. Thanks to Jon Rogers at Disney for putting this together.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-09-16

Ever wanted to see how they came they came up with the characters, settings, and more for the hit blockbuster trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean? Then you definitely should check this one out. The book is huge and bound in a beautiful leather cover. The pictures and illustrations are no less than amazing and are definitely worth the $$$ you're going to spend. So, if you are a Pirates of the Caribbean fan or just love artwork get this now!

4 out of 5 stars This is Quality.......2007-09-08

This is worth owning. The prints of the artwork are very large, as compared to other 'art of' books. I would have preferred artist liner notes though.

5 out of 5 stars Art of Pirates of the Caribbean--THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE DONE!.......2007-08-12

I am a big fan of "The Art of..." type books, and they are usually great fun and add to my enjoyment of the movie. "The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean", however, sets a new standard for quality in this type of book. From the faux-leather cover and binding, to the quality of the paper and the standards of the printing and color reproduction, this is the BEST book of its kind I have ever seen. Filled with fantastic art from all three movies, lavishly laid out...two page fold-out spreads; framable quality full page paintings and sketches..this book has it ALL. If you're a fan of the movies; appreciate great Pirate Art; or simply enjoy a lavishly produced movie book--BUY THIS BOOK (or as Capt. Jack would say--"Just go and steal it!")

4 out of 5 stars Sketches and concept art.......2007-07-28

The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean is a 160-page hardcover priced at a hefty $50. Although the art covers all three movies, it is mostly sketches and concept art without explanatory text or behind the scenes discussion. As such, it's good eye candy, but not much else.

This is a book you can set on the coffee table for friends to flip through. However, as a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I was ready to devour this book and came away somewhat disappointed. The drawings are a mix of black-and-white and color of the characters, ships, scenes, and such. Some of the drawings are storyboards and there are a few fold out pages.

5 out of 5 stars A Pirate lover's eye candy.......2007-08-26

I LOVE Dorling-Kindersly Books! There has never been a publisher that has produced better visual guides to just about everything than DK. So it comes as no surprise that their volume on the third Pirates of the Caribbean film is a joy to look at. You either like the movies--or you don't. BUT, if you like them, the fantastic visual world they created is one of the main draws. This DK volume does the usual wonderful job of putting together a beautifully photographed collection of some of the most striking images from the film. The only problem with the book is, I wish it were longer!

4 out of 5 stars The uncompleted visual guide to Priates of the Caribbean.......2007-08-07

The book is very good, not only the content, but also the print. But it is still not a "complete" visual guide to Piates of the Caribbean, because the world map of the priates on the seven seas is not in the book, that make me very disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars Tired Of Depp and Bloom.......2007-08-06

Another POTC item that focuses on Depp and Bloom (yawn). Geoffrey Rush is a fabulous actor and is not receiving credit he deserves for his excellent performance as Barbossa. Rush is one of the most talented actors who plays many different characters. He is not tied down to one type of character like Depp and Bloom often are. I would only recommend this book to a die-hard Bloom or Depp fan.

5 out of 5 stars Story of Pirates of the Caribbean movies in color.......2007-07-15

Very nice storybook of the POTC trilogy. Full colored. The Characters and the ships with lots of details which every Pirate movie fan wants to know. For adults en growing up childeren. Much pictures and easy text.

My kids have found this to be a great reference tool as they write stories or make their own "Pirates of the Caribbean" story tapes. The pictures are great too.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Information for the Aspiring Queen.......2007-02-16

Chock full of valuable and knowledgeable advice about male and female foibles. The story about the "lip extender" had me laughing so hard there were tears pouring down my face. Shorter than the others, lamentably, what were you THINKING, Jill???

1 out of 5 stars Another boring rehash.......2006-08-30

Yet another forum for the author to rehash the "good old days" give her wannabes their 15 minutes of fame. I don't understand why someone who is an inspirational speaker and talented writer would travel this path.

3 out of 5 stars FEEL BETTER LADIES! This is just fun...in book form........2005-12-30

There is really nothing At ALL WRONG IN HAVING A GOOD TIME,and this gal is doing her best to have a genu-wine helluva good time of life. If you have never celebrated just being a woman, do read her work. And if you have been born in the southern states, you will rather relate, even if you were born on the GREEN side of town, you freaks like myself will feel some (sanctimonius) maybe? relating, and you will laugh! I would rather like to be her friend, so that I could get a little dose of her fun, and she might get a bit more, my compassion for the human delimma.
(I have a hard time using people, whether they are aware of it, or not) ~but still understand!

Men! You guys can really be a big ol' CAN-O-WORMS...and you know it!
And this gal Jill is just putting that knowledge out there, in the form of one rowdy southern belle's opinion, and it is great fun to read about it! This girl could cheer up Eyore!

And yes I know that it is wrong to call a full grown woman a girl but some of us, we'll just never lose that spirit, and that is when you can do so correctly...politically or just socially, I for one, will never be too old to be a "girl" nor will Miss Jill Browne. This is a fun romp through the thoughts of a true (American as apple pie) sister!
Actual recipes are included in this book as well.
"Lighthearted romp" of a book.

3 out of 5 stars Just didn't have the old magic.......2005-11-26

My wife and I have loved the Sweet Potato Queen books from the beginning. Reading them together became something of a ritual for us. This book, however, left us both rather disappointed.

Jill Conner Browne is a very talented writer, no question about that, and her latest book did offer several laugh-out-loud moments. Her descriptions of the various types of men (and the women who are involved with them) was very funny. She devoted one brief chapter to explaining why "he" didn't call, which combined humor and down-home good sense as only the SPQ can do.

However, Conner-Browne's distinctive literary voice has changed over the years, and not for the better. In one chapter she goes on endlessly about her plastic surgery experience, from which she recuperates with a shopping spree. In another section, she describes her experience with acuptuncture, blissfully glossing over the expense of it. Previously, the SPQ came across as folksy and full of love-for-life. In discussing her high-priced indulgences, however, she comes across as spoiled and decadent. This kind of self-worshipping prattle distances her from those of us who don't have endless piles of money, and frankly makes her book less enjoyable to read.

Mind you, this doesn't mean that the latest SPQ book isn't worth reading. My wife and I agreed that we were both glad we read it. However, we also agreed that compared to the previous books in the series, it just wasn't as good.

Another hit in the series. The wife just loved it. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Inside the Mind of a Violent Revolutionary.......2005-06-16

Robert Griffin has done a thorough job of profiling the radical white nationalist Dr. William Pierce. Even Pierce himself questioned whether he had done enough to have a biography written about him, but Griffin has an interest in fringe groups and spends a lot of time covering Pierce's intellectual influences and who Pierce has influenced, as opposed to what Pierce has done. Like a lot of left or right wing extremists, Pierce often advocated the violent overthrow of what he thought was a corrupt order.

Pierce, who is now deceased, would often nurture his violent anger towards those who changed the country during the sixties--jews, blacks, communists, and liberals. This dark side of Pierce was well represented in his two pulp fiction books, The Turner Diaries and Hunter, which dwelled upon getting violent revenge against what he saw as a corrupt government, liberals, race-mixers, jews, and blacks. Timothy McVeigh loved the Turner Diaries for its anti-government message and had a quote from the book among other anti-government quotes from other mainstream sources with him when he was arrested. His connection with Pierce and white nationalists was tenuous.

An earlier violent white nationalist, Bob Matthews, was a member of Pierce's organization and was heavily influenced by the Turner Diaries. He and his compatriots began robbing porno shops and Brinks trucks to finance the revolution. Eventually, he died in a shoot out with a SWAT team. Pierce liked Matthews for being a manly man of action, but advised him that he shouldn't start a revolution before its time, during the education stage. Pierce was somewhat disappointed with the novels because he could still not bring in the professional class of people he wanted with his action-filled pot-boilers. Pierce believed that violent revolution was the only way to achieve what he wanted, a white ethno-state.

Pierce was a smart type of racist that was on the fast track to becoming a full professor in physics, but he began reading about racial topics during the upheaval in the sixties and decided to dedicate his life fully to saving the white race from dispossession. He was heavily influence by G. B. Shaw's play Man and Superman, coming away with the idea that we, as the white race, should focus on improving ourselves, not merely enjoying ourselves, collectively and individually. Pierce decided to "serve the life force" completely in fanatically pursuing his white activist goals after reading Shaw`s play.

Another interesting influence on Pierce was William Gayley Simpson, who became a missionary Christian helping the poor after reading about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, but after several years of the Lord's work, decided that conditions of the poor could not be improved unless human quality was improved. If human quality is good, the environmental conditions of their living space will be good, if the quality is bad, then the conditions will be bad, despite all help to improve it. Such eugenic philosophies resonated with Pierce's own thinking.

Pierce's weekly social analysis given out over the internet was insightful as far as pointing out the racial double standards of modern western society, which Griffin presents parts of.

Pierce stated that white-on-black crime is often reported repeatedly nationally to instill guilt in whites that they are still racist, but black-on-white crime, which is much more prevalent, is only reported locally and often the race of the victims and perpetrators aren't mentioned and it is often not charged as a hate crime.

Pierce said that during the sixties, opponents to integration and civil rights were almost always shown on TV to be lower class angry rednecks. Higher class and better educated whites with articulate arguments against civil rights and integration were almost never shown on TV. This presentation had a way of manipulating viewers into coming to a decision guided by the media because the viewers would be turned off by the angry redneck. It is the old political tactic of presenting your enemies as stupid.

Pierce also stated that multiculturalism says that it is good for minorities to look out for their own racial interests and have pride in themselves, but whites are strongly discouraged to organize in behalf of their own interests and they are supposed to be ashamed of supposedly being oppressors.

Pierce talked about how the schools don't really teach white kids about their race, heritage, culture, and accomplishments in a positive way and classic and traditional educational texts such as McGuffey Readers and Aesop's Fables have been generally been taken out of the schools, leaving white students de-moralized and rootless.

Pierce was both disturbing and inspiring; forcing those whites who would listen to think about their future and their children`s future and what kind of society the future had in store for whites. But his violent anger had sometimes even his sympathizers calling for him to tone down his message. I'm sure he will live on in the minds of his followers for years to come, although his organization has dwindled, from what I've read, because of the leadership vacuum that occurred because of his death. Griffin does the biography right, laying down the facts cold and letting the reader decide whether Pierce was a good man or not, or something in between. This is also an interesting book on how books affect people in their thoughts and actions--for good or ill.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book for readers of all viewpoints........2004-07-27

I am not a white racialist. I say this not because I feel the need to issue this disclaimer for Political Correctness, or out of fear that I may be considered such, but to explain my perspective on the life of William Pierce, head of the National Alliance.

My father was an undergraduate student under Dr. Pierce in the early 1960s and to this day doesn't understand how someone who impressed him as the most intelligent man on campus could have gone on to head an organization such as the Alliance. He did, however, feel that Griffin did a thorough and fair job of setting forth Pierce's belief system. I presented him with this book after having read it three times myself, out of sheer fascination with Griffin's superb, elegantly and straightforwardly written text on this enigmatic figure who my father had spoken of many times in our household. Astonishingly, as my father was describing him in awestruck admiration, Pierce was in the thick of conducting a political and organization-building activity that my father-and many if not indeed most educated Americans-would consider repellent and loathsome.

The formation of Pierce's belief system and the process he followed in translating these concepts into action are well described, as is the genesis of the National Alliance, the white racialist organization Pierce founded and which is considered by anti-racist and civil rights organizations to be the most intellectual and the most dangerous of all such outfits. Along the way, I gained an insight into the working of Pierce's mindset, and I think I understand him and his ideas, his worldview, his sense of life as well as one possibly could without having actually known him.

Although I cannot accept his fundamental thesis of White Supremacy for intellectual reasons, I think that to some extent one has to admire the courage of his convictions, because it is incredibly difficult for a bright young academic with early tenure to leave academia and go forth to promote an idea that obviously will make him an absolute pariah among his former colleagues, students, the media, and society in general. Griffin neither makes apologies for Pierce's views, nor the acts of members of Pierce's Alliance;however, he reports them without clouding them with his judgment. The reader understands fully the facts of life about the National Alliance, including the actions of Robert Mathews and his "Order",which apparently made possible much of the National Alliance's access to facilities.

My only complaint is not with the book's content, but with its physical form: my copy had its covers curl up and fray at the edges within days after it arrived, and the spine split shortly thereafter. I had my copy professionally hardbound, but readers should expect that a book will not disintegrate within a few readings.I hope future printings will be bound with a more durable softcover.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, fair, and interesting........2004-06-01

I really enjoyed reading this book. I had always
been curious about Dr. Pierce and didn't know that
much about where he'd come from or how he'd gotten
to be the man he was. This book answered all those
questions and more, and upon finishing it I had
a deeper respect for him.

I like the fact that he comes across as a man with
a sense of humor and a sort of worldliness that often
goes missing in men who take on the issues he took on
in his lifetime. He did not oversimplify things nor
did he work at making things complex in ways that weren't
necessary. I came to appreciate the *way* he thought
about things and the *way* he proceeded with his life
because of reading this book. Because of these things,
I found the book to be personally inspirational.

I was also delighted to find that Robert Griffin did
neither demonize nor glorify Dr. Pierce. I think he
portrayed Dr. Pierce as a man, the personal man being
the source for the public figure; faults and all.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is
curious about Dr. Pierce and doesn't want to read
something that is either fawning or villifying.
Well done, Mr. Griffin.

5 out of 5 stars A Great book about a Great Man.......2004-03-13

Why is it that people who have never read the book, have nothing to contribute to the reviews, are allowed to post things such as hoping that a car hits another person?

Dr. Pierce was yet another person who didn't fit the liberal image of White Nationalists. Dr. Pierce had an IQ that was off the charts, and was capable of debating any subject a person could bring up, in any field. In this book, Dr. Pierce looks back on his life, and gives his view on issues and people associated with White Nationalism. Dr. Pierce did more for the WN movement in America over the last 25 or so years then any man not named David Duke. Even today, when I listen to the archives of his radio broadcasts, and hear that distincitve Hello that he started each broadcast with, I smile. Buy this book if you want a fair and balanced book about Dr. Pierce and White Nationalism.

5 out of 5 stars AN EYE OPENER.......2003-11-20

I read this book over two years ago, and it remains one of my favorites.
Professor Robert Griffin does a great job and an invaluable service to the Late Dr. William Pierce by portraying him in an unbiased way, and without any kind of sarcastic arrogance which characterizes most other works on the topic of white racialism. Dr. William Pierce was not a violent fanatic nor evil racist nut who hid in the hills armed to the teeth with guns and missiles as the controlled media and certain jewish 'human rights' organizations want you to think: Dr. Pierce was a spiritual person who was not corrupted by the stale materialism and diversity of American society. He was incorruptible and actually lived by higher principles that do our present 'leaders', if you can call them that.
Dr. Pierce saw straight into the soul of Western civilization and realized it's successes, failures, potential, and the danger in which it is in today. He strived to reach as many Europeans with his message and inspired them to regain their pride, self-esteem and dignity by removing the blinders of apathy, ignorance and multiculturalism from their eyes and opened them to the naked truth of nature, history and the will to start on the upward path.
Dr. William Pierce's untimely death has been a very sad and shocking occurrence, but he has made us all proud white European men and women much more stronger, and his message will undoubtedly be carried on by those who have the strength, foresight and intelligence to listen. Without Dr. William Pierce, we would surely be in a much worse situation today.
All people of European ancestry should read this book and learn the ultimate truth that to be white and proud is natural, healthy and right, no matter what others say.

In this prequel to McMurtry's 1986 Pulitzer Prize-winning Lonesome Dove, Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call are invincible young bucks, Texas Rangers, full of youthful energy and, quite frankly, full of themselves. That is until they're utterly consumed by the vicious battlefield of the early-19th-century Wild West. Their journey takes them across barren deserts and raging rivers and through steep and snowy mountains, often on foot and with barely enough provisions and clothing to keep them from certain death. The constant threat of attack by Comanches keeps them awake nights, fearing for their lives--and for good reason. "Buffalo Hump reached down and grabbed the terrified boy by his long black hair. He yanked his horse to a stop, lifted Zeke Moody off his feet, and slashed at his head with a knife, just above the boy's ears. Then he whirled and raced across the front of the huddled Rangers, dragging Zeke by the hair. As the horse increased its speed, the scalp tore loose and Zeke fell free. Buffalo Hump had whirled again, and held aloft the bloody scalp."

This bedraggled group of adventurers--on their foolhardy expedition to seize Santa Fe from the Mexicans (who also prove to be formidable enemies)--includes a salty assortment of cowboys, scouts, fortune seekers, and a fat and sassy whore nicknamed "The Great Western." McMurtry's adept storytelling paints a portrait of the Wild West that at times is palpable. One can almost smell the campfires, the body odors, and the long-awaited piece of meat after weeks without a proper meal. Dead Man's Walk will satisfy your craving for adventure, without having to put your life on the line.

Book Description

Dead Man's Walk is the first, extraordinary book in the epic Lonesome Dove tetralogy, in which Larry McMurtry breathed new life into the vanished American West and created two of the most memorable heroes in contemporary fiction: Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call.

As young Texas Rangers, Gus and Call have much to learn about survival in a land fraught with perils: not only the blazing heat and raging tornadoes, roiling rivers and merciless Indians but also the deadly whims of soldiers. On their first expeditions--led by incompetent officers and accompanied by the robust, dauntless whore known as the Great Western--they will face death at the hands of the cunning Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump and the silent Apache Gomez. They will be astonished by the Mexican army. And Gus will meet the love of his life.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Boring, depressing, and disappointing.......2007-08-01

Lonesome Dove was a fantastic novel, but this prequel is not even close to the same league. McMurtry must have been depressed when he wrote it, because the entire book is very gloomy, and nothing good ever seems to happen to the main characters. This book and Comanche Moon should really be one book, since there is really no conclusion to this book. Neither one of them is a worthy prequel to Lonesome Dove.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Lonesome Dove.......2007-07-06

I had great exspectations for this book but ended up skipping pages to try and find Some real action. It was a great disappointment. Too much time spent on the whores and long periods of inaction and stupidity of most of the main players left me in limbo. I thought it would be about the adventures of Gus and Call in the ranger days before Lonesome Dove, but was only one long drawn out event. Don't exspect a lot and you will not be disappointed as I was. Long walks across the desert with people dying all the time is not my idea of a action book.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy Prequel to Lonesome Dove .......2007-06-08

Larry McMurtry's DEAD MAN'S WALK is a worthy prequel to 1. Lonesome Dove (the Pulitizer Prize winning masterpiece). However, it lacks the originality of Lonesome Dove. The characters are very real and McMurtry writes in a convincing and readable manner.

The book is excellent until page 459 which is the introduction of Lady Carey and her entourage. The next twenty nine pages are worthless. They add little to the story and worst of all they made the novel unconvincing. The troop saunters through the llano like a circus: there is a black lady with warrior nature, a leper woman who is a contrived Godiva, and a young boy who is one-dimensional.

The beginning story was a tale of grueling hardship to survive. It is high quality writing combined with a page turning story. But McMurtry fails the reader with his hideous conclusion. The ending seemed more circus fantasy than gritty western.

Despite the poor conclusion Dead Man's Walk is worth the read. The tale of Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call is as good as Lonesome Dove. It is delightful to read of their trials and coming into manhood. The descriptions of the landscapes are stunning. Also, the villain, Buffalo Hump, is a force throughout the novel and a hallmark of this book.

Overall ****/***** for a good tale but poor ending; and well conceived characters. Make sure to watch the DVD version of this book. David Arquette and Jennifer Garner are a perfect Gus and Clara.

I found much of this book to be contrived and forced. Its more of a formula book than the others. The characters didn't ring true with what they became.

2 out of 5 stars Dead Man's Walk - a review.......2007-02-08

Woodrow Call and Agustus McCrae are very young men, just embarking on their adventures as Texas Rangers when this book takes place. I have to admit it was rather a disappointment. "Lonesome Dove" is a masterpiece and, in a way, I think McMurty should have left it at that. He uses the central characters from "Lonesome Dove" in "Dead Man's Walk", and, especially in regard to Woodrow Call, it just doen't ring true. I just can't see Captain Call of LD as the same Woodrow Call in DMW, particularly when it comes to his relationship with Maggie. Captain Call was a solitary individual, emotionally remote. I don't see this struggle in DMW, or any reason for him to turn inward later in life and to deny his son. The ending of the book seems rather abrubt and far-fetched. If you can separate the idea that these are the same characters from LD, you may enjoy the book on that level. As westerns go, it is an okay read.

It's an unlikely beginning to what became a momentous, history-changing history fair project. Eleven-year-old Hunter Scott was watching Jaws one day when he first heard about the World War II sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Intrigued, he investigated further, and discovered a shocking, heartbreaking story behind what should have been a tale of heroism and patriotism. Torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, the Indianapolis went down in minutes, taking more than 800 sailors with it. Several hundred survived, but only after spending days in the open sea with sharks diminishing their numbers hourly. This is only the beginning of the tragedy, however. In an effort to make an example of the ship's captain, and in order to deflect blame from itself, the U.S. Navy unfairly court-martialed the captain, painfully changing the lives of all the men involved.

Basing much of his text on young Hunter Scott's research, author Pete Nelson does a fine job of presenting this story through the eyes of many of the survivors. Old and new photos allow readers to know many of the men of the ship, and personal accounts reveal the horrors of those days in the ocean--and later in the courtroom. A bittersweet ending will leave the reader pensive and deeply moved. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Just after midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in 14 minutes. More than 1,000 men were thrown into shark-infested waters. Those who survived the fiery sinking—some injured, many without life jackets—struggled to stay afloat in shark-infested waters as they waited for rescue. But the United States Navy did not even know they were missing. The Navy needed a scapegoat for this disaster. So it court-martialed the captain for “hazarding” his ship. The survivors of the Indianapolis knew that their captain was not to blame. For 50 years they worked to clear his name, even after his untimely death. But the navy would not budge—until an 11-year-old boy named Hunter Scott entered the picture. His history fair project on the Indianapolis soon became a crusade to restore the captain’s good name and the honor of the men who served under him.

Download Description

Hunter Scott, an 11-year-old boy in Pensacola, Florida, was watching the movie Jaws, listening to Captain Quint tell the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis at the end of World War II. "Eleven hundred men went into the water. Very first light, the sharks come cruising. . . ." Hunter had a simple question: Was this a true story?

The story of the USS Indianapolis, the worst naval disaster in American history, is indeed true. So is the story of the shameful court-martial of the ship's captain, shameful because the loss of the ship was not his fault, and the Navy knew it. Hunter Scott became the catalyst for the survivors' efforts to clear their captain's name and set the record straight. This is the story of the ship, her brave sailors, their wronged captain, and a young man's crusade to right an old injustice.

If you want to give your students an inspiration to do more for others than for themselves, give them this book. Scott Hunter's work was important and I appreciate this author's choice to write the book for the left for dead navy soldiers.

4 out of 5 stars Left For Dead was a fantasic read.......2007-03-08

This book was great. I absolutely loved it. I didn't give it full marks because the beginning was very slow. The excitement didn't come until the ship sank. After that it was great. I would recommend this book to everyone.
This book takes place mainly in the Pacific Ocean. The time is from 1945 to 2001. It ranges from the ship sinking to Hunter trying to fix the captain's name. There are two story lines in the book. (One is Hunter and the other is the crew) There were a lot of important events. Of course one of the most important was the sinking. Also when the captain was court-martialed it was huge.
There were a lot of conflicts in the book. Many of them happened in the water. For instance many men thought they saw a fantasy island. They would want to take a group of people and swim to it. The problem was that the others didn't see it, so they didn't want to leave the group. Sometimes physical fights would break out over weather or not to go. Eventually to solve the issue one guy would just swim out and see. (Of course they wouldn't find the island) some of them were attacked by sharks, while swimming away, and died.
Over all this book was great!!!

From start to finish I enjoyed much of this novel. THere were times when i didn't understand all of the fancy language of the navy and ships, but it was a great read.
THis novel is based on the story of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. THis ship sinks during the world war and everyone points their fingers at the captain. But a young boy chooses to aid this man who has been accused of this nonsense.
This book is very interesting and every page had more detail and suspense that made it a great read. Usually I can't sit through

"A Simple Review of Injustice"

The novel, Left For Dead by Pete Nelson and Hunter Scott, is quite an interesting piece of work. The book is about the story of the USS Indianapolis disaster, possibly the worst the Navy has ever seen. The story is centered around the injustice that was directed towards the ship's captain. Captain McVay was court marshaled because of his so-called inability to get out of the situation the USS Indianapolis faced. Hunter Scott, a boy who saw the movie, Jaws, became skeptical. He went on a journey to prove that Captain McVay was innocent. Does Scott prove that McVay is in fact innocent? Or does his efforts fail him? Read this novel and the ending will astonish even the worst skeptics.
Quotes in Left for Dead show the reader that this book is worth reading. First, in the Preface, Hunter Scott says, "I am trying to honor a group of veterans to whom honor is everything." Hunter says here that he is going to great heights as well as disadvantages to fight for Captain McVay. Hunter has a mission and nothing is going to stop him from doing what he thinks is right. He is trying to make up for all the sacrifices those men faced in order for our freedom to be in stone forever. Suspense is prominent in this novel. Here, before chapter seven, a quote from Herman Melville, a man from Moby Dick, is stated. It reads, "Any man unaccustomed to such sights, to have looked over her side that night, would have almost thought the whole round sea was one huge cheese, and those sharks the maggots in it." Here, foreshadowing of the accident is given. This is important because it gives a sense of suspense to the reader. The horrific disaster is shown in a nutshell from this little quote. Toward the end of Left For Dead, Pete Nelson writes, "Three hundred and seventeen survived the sinking of the Indianapolis, which meant that there were 317 different stories to be told afterward." Pete Nelson is saying here that this story is a classic. All of the survivors would not have stories to tell if it was not an experience of a lifetime. Just another reason to read Left for Dead.
Left For Dead has its ups and downs. I really enjoyed the history behind the USS Indianapolis. I learned many new things from this novel and there is plenty of knowledge to share! Also, I love how Pete Nelson implemented a story theme to the novel. It was not just a documentary; it was a story that included documentary material. However, there were some downsides to this novel. I did not like the fact that it jumped around from story to information often. It would have been better if the novel would have one way or another; either all storyline or either all documentary. As you can see, Left For Dead is a great novel and I would recommend it to anyone if they are interested in history regarding the Navy or even American history.

This book was recommended to me by a friend as a must read. After buying the book from Amazon, I couldn't put it down. The stories of the men who were left at sea and the struggle by the young man so many years later to restore the honor of the caption falsely accused is well written in this short book and should be on everyone's must read list.

Literature and film buffs will be delighted by this collection of pulp novels, most of which were made into important films. James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice is a literary masterpiece with its spare prose invoking a savage, sexy, desperate world. It inspired no less than three great movies: Luchino Visconti's classic Ossessione, in 1942; the 1946 remake, starring John Garfield and Lana Turner and directed by the extraordinary Tay Garnett; and Bob Rafelson's underrated 1981 version with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange. When you read the magnificent source for these movies, you'll be astonished at how three different incarnations could all, in their own ways, be faithful to the novel.

Cornell Woolrich's I Married a Dead Man also became three movies: No Man of Her Own, with Barbara Stanwyk; the French I Married a Shadow; and the American comedy, Mrs. Winterborne, which starred Shirley MacLaine and Ricki Lake. Edward Anderson's vivid Thieves Like Us was transformed into They Live by Night, Nicholas Ray's first important movie and one of the seminal noir films of the 1940s. It was brilliantly remade in 1974 by the great revisionist director Robert Altman. Kenneth Fearing's The Big Clock was transformed into a marvelous film starring Charles Laughton; 40 years later, the same source, retitled No Way Out, brought Kevin Costner to stardom. William Lindsay Gresham's Nightmare Alley was the source for Tyrone Power's best movie; Horace McCoy's experimental They Shoot Horses, Don't They? became one of the seminal films of the 1960s.

These dark, evocative novels, when taken together, are a fascinating study of how words can inspire a magnificent variety of cinematic images and styles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Read.......2007-06-04

This collection of novels from the 30s and 40s was terrific fun and an outstanding introduction to the genre. You can debate whether they're all noir (at least what I expected noir to be); but nonetheless they each convey a distinct impression and view of the time. Without getting into lengthy reviews, I enjoyed Woolrich's "I Married a Dead Man" the most--from his eloquent style to the actual story-line. You know you're reading a master story-teller. Second was Gresham's "Nightmare Alley;" although sometimes I thought he could have expanded on some aspects of the story and shortened other passages (i.e., a little bit of editing would help). But each novel was distinct and enjoyable. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Crime Novels -- 30s/40s.......2006-11-07

Ha! Just skimmed some other reviews and I wanna add my two cents. Yes, this volume is definitely something. Some impressions follow.

The Postman Always Rings Twice: Indeed, Cain knew how to make the reader keep turning pages. Short, sweet, and fascinating. After I discovered the significance of the title (which is a bit of a "trick"), I liked the whole effort all the more.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They?: A bit monotonous to read; a bit dark. That was the point. All told, a fascinating novel. Among all literature named in the world, *this* is one of few titles inspired by God: so memorable and unique, so perfect. It turns out to impart chilling meaning, as well, on several levels.

Thieves Like Us: My least favorite. This was a subjective reaction, however. I wanted the story to take turns it didn't take. Moreover, Anderson as an author took note of things I found not-so-interesting; apparently, the book's status to this day speaks otherwise on behalf of many other readers, however.

The Big Clock: Short, sweet and sterile. Almost machine-like in its plotting and execution -- if so written intentionally, a fascinating stylistic choice given its title -- but, notably, full of interesting and colorful characterizations. Possibly my favorite.

Nightmare Alley: Relentlessly grim and ugly. I'm not so sure there is a single character to root for in this story. That was probably very much intended. Fascinating but, again, very grim. Literary nihilists of today would do well to take a lesson from Gresham's characterization, plot and style.

I Married A Dead Man: Although the novels were presented chronologically, this was a nice way to end the volume. A very simple, linear, domestic story, without hard-boiled criminality or complication, which unfolds with some plot which stretches credibility, but lies ultimately within the realm of the possible. Notable among noir novels for Woolrich's ability to evoke two unexpected emotions at the end: a sense of deep and abiding love between two of the main characters -- before the real and final ending -- and a sense of genuine sadness.

Worth owning. Might take the reader a while to get through. This is, in effect, six books in one, running to nearly a thousand pages. But it was definitely fun; and as another reviewer implied, it's surprising how little has changed.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for the 1930's and 1940's/ .......2006-07-11

First of all, the Library Of America collection provides the reader with some of the most beautiful hardcover editions available today. That said, the selections chosesn for this edition are all first class; for someone just getting into hard-boiled fiction, this is the ideal place to start. If you're like me and have been reading this genre for many years, this is a perfect volume to add to one's collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Dark Underbelly of the American Dream.......2005-09-29

Noir emerged in the early 20th-Century from Pulp paperbacks published for mass consumption. Highlighting in gritty and sensationalistic detail the sordid undercurrents of Western society, Noir became an artistic force that became the medium for the representation of the down and out segment of the populace. Whether set in the impersonal grime of urban reality or at the deceptive simplicity of rural picturesqueness, Noir in Film and Literature revealed the odyssey and travails of lost souls whose misguided characters bore too much of the weight of their selves and their pasts to break from the shackles of their present.

"Crime Novels: American Noir of the 1930's and 40's" is the American equivalent in prose of the influential and enduring genre. The grim and unforgiving tales of the dejected cast of mid 20th-Century American life are openly depicted ("The Postman Always Rings Twice"; "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"; "Thieves Like Us"; "Nightmare Alley"); vicissitudes of fate ("The Big Clock"; "I Married a Dead Man"). Whether set in scenic California, the vast and open Midwest, or a high-rise office in Manhattan, these novels uniformly render a panorama of blighted dreams, twisted turns of fate, and the sad recurrence of misfortune in desperate individuals doomed to tragedy.

None too substantial in content but highly readable, this edition is the first of a handsome 2-Volume anthology on American Noir fiction published by the venerable Library of America. Edited by Robert Polito (Poet, writer, anthologist on Noir Lit. and author of a biography on Jim Thompson), these stories enduring relevance are seen in various forms of contemporary society: from the writings of James Ellroy, Brett Easton Ellis, Lawrence Block, and Robert Bloch; in films like "Scarface", "Pulp Fiction", "Fight Club"; and in everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Discovery: 4 or 5 of these make amazing reading.......2005-01-23

This is an impressive collection of early and now scarce Noir novels. "The Big Clock" and "Nightmare Alley" are particularly hard to find outside of this volume.

Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice" was probably the first crime novel I ever really got into, and it's a stunning departure from Agatha Christie-style mysteries. So much happens in this short book (as turns of plot, but also development of character) that it compares favorably to the first half Camus' "The Stranger." The drifter plumbs the depths of his desperation in a brutal attachment to another man's wife: it's not greed or lust that drives him, but a base need for someone to whom he can anchor himself. A raw and amazing experience, unmatched by anything else of Cain's.

McCoy's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" is impressively vivid. I had no idea these dance-hall marathons took place before reading this story. This circus of exploitation of young and apparently desperate people certainly makes for excellent Noir. One of these benefits of reading these novels is the unearthing of buried episodes in America's past.

"Thieves Like Us" has been reviewed here as the weaker end of the collection, and I have to agree. It's still a very capable story of outlaws; and the stoicism of the young people caught up in the criminal's lives is admirably depicted here. I recommend reading Andersen's novel before the others (it's still definitive Noir), so one can more easily avoid expectations built up by the Cain and McCoy.

"The Big Clock" is interesting in the depiction of power relationships between employer and employee, and the shifting first-person style of telling the story works here. I never heard of Fearing before reading this novel, but he evidently had a deep understanding of the motivations of very different kinds of people. This novel has the most suspense of the collection, and is a great and sophisticated read.

The most surprising and bizzare novel is "Nightmare Alley," a strange and memorable journey of an aspiring carnival charlatan. It defines Sleaze. The longest and most complex novel, it feels like a long-lost classic that's been hidden away because of its disturbing content. Some may think of it as too long, but the twisting journey through sweaty farming towns, railroad stations and addled big-city martiarchs required time to establish some crediblity: by the end, I was convinced that such a grotesque collection of stunts actually belonged in the story of this country. "Nightmare Alley" alone is worth the price of the book. Fans of Tarot might be a little offended, but this is especially recommended for understanding fans of Ray Bradbury.

Finally, "I Married a Dead Man" by Woolrich is a suspense novel set up by a tragic accident. The protagonist, literally and figuratively hungry, siezes the opportunity to substitute herself into a more fortunate woman's life. Excellently done, and more grounded in comparison to "Nightmare Alley."

Overall, there's no legitimately weak entry in this collection. The variety of content in these novels is enormous, and acquiring this book will allow the reader to experience the different flavors of American Noir. Most modern crime/suspense movies will seem ridiculous by comparison.
