Book Description
Henry Hill was a born wiseguy, and his love of food got him through both the good and bad times. Even cooking on the run in the Federal Witness Protection Program-where prosciutto was impossible to find and gravy was something you put on mashed potatoes-he managed to keep good Italian food on the table. He still brings this flair for improvisation to his cooking. No recipe is set in stone. And substitutions are listed just in case.
Now, in his inimitable style, Hill tells some spicy stories of his life in the Mob and out, and shows readers how to whip up his favorite dishes, Sicilian-style-recipes to make even the toughest tough-guy beg for more...

Customer Reviews:
good cookbook, but.......2007-04-16
I've made a few of the meals in here, and they were very good. Not all that different from the way I cook anyway, but a few differences made the meals better. No problem with the recipes.
My problem is with the marketing of gangster life. This isn't a merely an Italian cookbook-- this is promoted as a MAFIA cookbook ("cooking on the run"?). His life stories are told in euphamistic and humourous fashion, but the reality is very different. The end of the book is almost enraging-- Henry says he he sees pierced and tattoo'd kids eating dinner at McDonald's, and wonders where their parent are-- they ought to be having a nice family dinner at home.
PUHLEEEEZE!!! Read his childrens' book-- "On the Run--A Mafia Childhood". Years of drinking and drug related abuse, not coming home for days at a time, turning his home into a drug and sex den, both before and after his bust-- and much worse stuff-- if you find yourself getting amused by his engagingly told tales of gangster glory or if you find his stories of his Broolyn childhood endearing, then you need to read his childrens' book for balance. See the link below.
Buy this book used. I wouldn't put a dime in Hill's pocket.
On the Run: A Mafia Childhood
A thumping good read. .......2007-02-25
Hill's book is extremely insightful. It's very descriptive and chocked full of authentic Italian recipes and stories from Hill's gangster life. The recipes range from very simple to somewhat complicated, depending on the reader's preference. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the real-life, but old style of Italian cuisine.
The Wise Guy Cookbook: My Favorite Recipes From My life as a Goodfella to Cooking on the Run.......2007-01-16
A colorfull presentation of some excellent recipes, I truely value this book, in my collection. Try his shrimp receipe for the grill, excellent, my guests loved it and I the simplicity.
Cook better than an Italian restaurant.......2006-12-06
I got this for my husband last Christmas and we haven't found anything that wasn't totally delicious. The only problem is, we can't eat Italian in a restaurant anymore! We cook better at home!! With Henry's precise step-by-step directions, and his delightful autobiographical inserts, this is our favorite cookbook.
If you can stomach it, a viewing of "Goodfellas" really makes the cookbook a lot of fun and brings the voice of Henry Hill to life. Sometimes we can feel him running around our kitchen in his drug-induced haze, preparing his Michael's favorite meatballs just like in the movie!
Great, but not the best.......2006-02-28
My only criticism is that a many of the recipes in the book would be found in any other Italian cookbook. That said, the tips and stories behind the recipes make up for that.
I would recommend it to anyone looking for classic Italian (or Italian-American) food. The book deals with how to make the best food anywhere. No matter where you are, or what your local shops have, you can find something great in these pages. The emphasis is on how you approach cooking, not just what you're making.

Gangsters, Goodfellas and a jerk........2007-07-29
In a review of his children's book it was stated that Henry comes off well in this book, Wiseguy and the Movie. Just to let people know I thought he comes across as an arrogant, narcisstic jerk, who cares nothing for other people.
Ok Rat book.......2007-05-07
Was good to hear what the rat has been doing since he was freed for giving up the people that protected him and taught him how to make a living.
Never Read This Just Stating . . . .......2007-03-07
People basing this book on the movie "Goodfellas" would be very disappointed. If you looking for the inspiring book of the screenplay for "Goodfellas" should look for Wiseguy by Peligio
Great Book, Great Story.......2005-09-20
I read the book before seeing the movie, and Wow! I really enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down. Very well written. Two thumbs up!!!!!!!
Don't waste your time........2005-08-02
I'm giving this book two stars, and I think that is being VERY generous. I'm a HUGE fan of the movie 'Goodfellas' but this was terrible.
First of all, the writing is horrid. There was no flow whatsoever and Henry Hill kept repeating words. Grammar mistakes were ridiculously obvious (ever heard of having it proofread at least ONCE?) Honestly, I didn't even make it through the whole book, it was that bad. I almost always press myself until the end but this time I decided it wasn't worth it.
Henry Hill was obviously just trying to capitalize on his fame. If you want to read a decent book about Henry check out the one written by his kids (Greg and Gina Hill) called 'On the Run' - that one is worth your time.

Pathetic.......2004-06-22
As the other reviewers point out, this is another shameless attempt by Henry Hill to profit from the hard work of others, namely Martin Scorsese, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci. Any one with a minimal knowledge of organized crime could have written this book. Henry Hill makes the following insightful comments, "New York has four seasons and five crime families." "The worst trip to NYC is if you don't come back (alive)." "If you mispronounce Houston Street, you'll get whacked." Oh yes, Mr. Hill, the SoHo and Village residents will definitely kill when a tourist thrusts such a heinous indignity upon them. Complementing stories that aren't even up to New York Post standards are quite possibly the worst photographs I have ever seen. Photographs include the following: nightclubs at 10am with the shutters closed, an abandoned factor that could be anywhere in the US, a chain link fence at the end of a road, and surveillance shots of fatuously inflated lowlifes hanging around a junkyard. The unfortunate thing about this book is that it could be good. A serious book about the mob by one of its members could very possibly give insight to the rest of us. This is not that book. In Hill speak, other mobsters should have him `whacked' for embarrassing them since readers may assume the average mob mind is as weak as his.
HENRY HILL LIKES TO TELL STORIES.......2004-06-20
This book contains some interesting stuff but most of it is recycled from wiseguy and the wiseguy cookbook. In addition to being extremely fluffy some of the stuff he says is flat out wrong. He says that Vito Genovese somehow posthumously blew the door off of Frank Costellos crypt. Genovese died in 1969 and Costello died in 1973. Most crackheads can see the problem with this little tidbit. Save your money and read it at the store, it should only take about 15 minutes. By the way, I made the oven penitentiary sauce from his cookbook and it sucked.

Book Description
The Mob Only Spoke in the Strictest Confidence. . .
As mob families go, the Philadelphia Mafia is the most dysfunctional family of all -- with brother turning against brother, sons turning on their fathers. In 1993 an embittered legacy of rivalry and hatred exploded in a brutal, bloody battle between old world mobster John Stanfa and the young, flamboyant Joey Merlino. However, this would be warfare different from any other. This time, the FBI had it all down on tape.
And the FBI Was Listening...
Veteran true crimes journalist George Anastasia takes you inside the world of mobsters at war, and FBI agents so close on the heels that they even watched one hit unfold live through a surveillance camera. Drawing on the transcripts themselves, here are mobsters bragging, lamenting, and marking their comrades for death.
Among Them:
John Stanfa, the violent often irrationally paranoid old style mob don battling a new generation of savage young turks.
Rosario Bellocchi, the young Sicilian-born hitman in love with his boss's lovely daughter who would do anything to get ahead -- even kill his best friend.
John Veasey, the five foot six inch, two hundred pound mad dog hitman who once had to postpone a hit -- in order to visit his parole officer.
After four years, two thousand conversations, and dozens of shoot outs -- some on crowded Philadelphia Streets -- the goodfella tapes made a perfect net to catch some of the most vicious mobsters in America.
Customer Reviews:
like watching a train wreck.......2007-09-04
This is the story of the Philadelphia mob in the 1990s, a story so ridiculous it's almost hard to believe it all really happened. But happen it did; take the characters from Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, lower their IQs by about thirty points, and you have the people in this book. Anastasia's "can you believe this?" writing style used throughout the book to underscore the insanity is highly effective.
Ivan Rorick
Dys-organized crime........2003-09-27
This book picks up where MOBFATHER left off. It was early-90's Philadelphia: Nicky Scarfo and his confederates were all dead, in jail, or hiding in the Federal Witness Protection Program. The Philly Mob was leaderless at best -- until a Sicilian immigrant named John Stanfa vowed to rebuild the Philly Mob and turn it back around to what it used to be: a venerable institution of loyalty, honor, and omerta, the sacred code of silence. To that end, he collected an assembly of Sicilians whom he hoped would literally and figuratively whip the Philly Mob back into shape. Stanfa's nemesis was Joey Merlino, a flashy, in-your-face, young Italian American who cared more about nightclubbing, manicures, and hitting on girls than he did about the old-world ethos of organized crime. And so the two men of different generations and cultures clashed, turning the streets of South Philadelphia into a battleground. The hilarious irony lay in the fact that Stanfa's recruits, whom he lauded as a much-needed infusion of Sicilian-born blood that would enhance the Philly mob, were the biggest band of misfits ever assembled. To say they couldn't shoot straight was an overstatement; these fools could barely shoot at all! The botched attempt to blow up Merlino's car was the funniest scene in the book! The Philly Mob of the early 90's was called the most dysfunctional mob family in America. This book shows why.
A hit.......2003-06-22
George hits the nail on its' head with goodfella tapes. Not only does he successfully and accurately describe the brutal mob war of 93', but tells the story of how the Mafia was the most powerful thing in South Philly. From tough guys like Stanfa to hitmen like John Veasy it's all in there. A must read for people with an interest in organized crime at it's best.
Good story, mediocre enunciation.......2002-02-22
This is the story of the mob that couldn't shoot straight, the Philadelphian mob led by John Stanfa. It's a very exciting story.
It's people like Rosario Bellocchi and Biagio Adornetto that are both madly in love with the mob boss' daughter.
It's Joe Ciancaglini fighting his brother in the rivalling mob led by young playboy Joey Merlino.
It's a story of how Stanfa was almost killed, a story of how others were, how some snitched and some didn't, how the feds recorded an entire mob war on tape and video, a story of mafioso incompetence extreme and a story of how mob boss John Stanfa was brought down, all and all a great story that could definitely have been told better! All the way through the book I imagined the story as a film by Tarantino, and he could be just the person to make this story a success on the big screen, but the author George Anastasia has written a report, not a novel, of this thrilling mob war. To me that was a big disappointment, so I think you should know about this before you buy the book.
G.A. could at least have gone a little out of his way to make it a bit more exciting and a bit less tedious, the same facts are often repeated again and again, the outcome of the story is mentioned and revealed half-way through the book, and the funny details aren't told in a funny way.
Luckily I have a vivid imagination and imagined the whole menagerie, so it didn't ruin anything that the author crammed together 238 pages with an almost striking disconcern for his enunciation.
In short: An absolutely amazing story that would be hillarious if it wasn't real, but an enunciation that could be a LOT better. I still recommend that you read this book though, because if you stick to it, it's worth it all.
The story gets 5 stars, the author gets 1½ star, so the overall rating is 3 stars.
A good book on the Philadelphia mob.......2001-11-25
This book covers a bizarre, disjointed and bewildering period in Philadelphia mob history. The Philadelphia mob was, from the death of Angelo Bruno until the mid-to-late-'90s, one of the most violent outfits around, not to mention one of the most tumultuous in terms of power structure. During the period covered by this book, things got REALLY out of hand. If you love stories about crazy mobsters -- like the guy who lit his own hand on fire to give himself an alibi for a murder -- you'll love it. George Anastasia is one of the top-notch organized crime reporters.

Customer Reviews:
A great book! Highly recommended........2005-11-19
A little gambling on college sports is basically harmless, right? This book will change your mind. I'm sure none of the players in Porter's book feel "unharmed" by the fallout of Boston College's point shaving scandal. Young careers, reputations, and lives were ruined, and that is tragic. There's great tension from the beginning, even if you know the historical outcome of the games and trials. Plus, if you enjoyed Goodfellas, you'll love meeting Henry Hill again, even if he's not the glamorized Ray Liotta version!
Great Expose of Corruption in College Sports.......2005-01-12
I read the book a while ago and, having lived in a college town all my adult life, I want this book recommend highly. The story is important because big-time college athletics has had its share of scandals but nothing seems to change. Adding the Mafia connection, drugs, criminal trials - its a huge indictment of big money sports in academia. Porter does an excellent job of bringing it all together - the trials and the follow-up interviews with each of the indicted players are especially well-written. I look forward to more good writing from David Porter.
Dr. Rosalie Pedalino Porter
Excellent, incisive, entertaining.......2003-09-12
I read David Porter's fascinating and well researched account of the real and perceived point shaving of Boston College's basketball team in a single sitting. In addition to his sensitive approach to each player's family history, psychology, and financial stresses, Porter presents the dynamic among the Mob, law enforcement and the players with nuance and professional objectivity.
A great read for all - serious sports enthusiasts to grandma on a Sunday afternoon.
Riveting On-/Off-Court Saga.......2003-02-21
Tremendous read -- the characters come alive, the full range of personal fallibility: gullible to greedy, stoic to berserk. An amazing examination of the verious motivations of human behavior, and the way character is tested by pressure, by competition, by fear and by the temptation of money. Involvement of celebrity gangsters lends both intrigue and absurdity,as the stakes were simultaneously huge for the players but penny-ante for the kingpins.... Great book to read. You will watch March Madness with new eyes.
Recommended to basketball, crime, and suspense fans.
What a joke.......2002-12-20
Porter's agenda to clear Jim Sweeney's name and to cast more doubt over Ernie Cobb's name is disgraceful. Sweeney fixed games. Period. He admitted to that by accepting a plea bargain from his "buddy" Ed McDonald. Cobb, who would have been a very good NBA player was acquited of all charges, yet Porter wants you to believe that Cobb was guilty. This book insults any true Basketball fan's knowledge of the game. Kuhn wasn't good enough to dictate outcome, Cobb was acquited of all charges, leaving Sweeney the Point Guard as the obvious link on the court. I'm surprised Porter's never been sued for this inaccurate hatchet job.

Book Description
"As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster."
Henry Hill grew up in the midst of New York City's criminal underworld, finally achieving the coveted status of "wiseguy." But in 1980, he made the decision to exchange his knowledge for a new identity. GoodFellas, Hill's own account of crude hierarchies, casual murders, and collaboration with the Feds (as a member of the Witness Protection Program) was adapted for the screen by Martin Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi--and is now seen as a contemporary classic. The film drew rave reviews everywhere upon its theatrical release in 1990, and was nominated for Oscars in both the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories.
This book also offers an introduction by David Thompson, the noted film critic and co-editor of Scorsese on Scorsese.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Script.......2002-11-04
Sure, if you're not into the film "Goodfellas" that much or if you don't care for screenplays, then chances are that this would be rather worthless to you. Might as well find something else to buy, because this isn't going to do anything for you.
But, if you DO love the film and would like to read the screenplay, then this is just the thing for you. Written by Martin Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi, "Goodfellas" is an amazing script that sucks you in right away.
Henry Hill has always wanted to be gangster, as he states in the very beginning of the film. This is his story of how he became one and everything he had witnessed and experienced. It's a tragic story of how good things always have to come to an end. It's also about how power and money can grab hold of your life until it's too late to turn back. A tale full of crime, murder, paranoia, and greed, "Goodfellas" is a trip down Mafia Lane that you will never forget. This is Mr. Hill's story.
The script is based on Nicholas Pileggi's novel, "Wise Guys," which is also based on a true story. The dialogue is sharp and very realistic and gives us a window into the lives of people in the Mafia. It is a very quick read, only about 130 pages. That's pretty short, considering that the movie was at least 2 and a half hours long. But, it's just dialogue, which is why it is very easy to read it quickly. I finished it in less than a day.
If you love the film "Goodfellas," and are interested in reading screenplays, then this is the perfect book for you. Here's your chance to relive some of your favorite moments, this time in writing. A very fine screenplay, it is.
Wiseguy.......2001-11-21
Great book. Great detail.A must for anyone who has seen the film. Gives you a 100% more info and detail.
Best Gangster Film Ever Made.......2001-09-09
Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" is, hands down, the best gangster film ever made. "The Godfather" created the mythical imagery of mob families that was forever buried by this gutty, bloody real life drama. Based upon the true story as told by the film's main character, Henry Hill, "Goodfellas is the best filmed example of the real life glamour and woekmanlike drudgery that goes with being a wiseguy. It is difficult to imagine a show like "The Sopranos," for example, had not "Goodfellas" reinvented the gangster film genre.
Ray Liotta is excellent as Henry, but the movie's real showcases are the performances of Joe Pesci and Robert DiNiro as his partners in crime. Pesci in particular gives a tour de force performance that is downright frightening. Other first rate performances come from Lorraine Bracco as Henry's Jewish wife and Paul Sorvino, whose performance as a real life Godfather could not be more different than Marlon Brando's.
This film is a must see for anyone who enjoys gangster movies. It also has to rank as THE best American movie of the 1990s.
"Like I'm A Clown...I'm Here To Amuse you?".......2001-07-17
Turning dense, non fiction material such as Nick Pileggi's 1985 best seller "Wiseguy," into a cohesive screenplay is no easy task, but Pileggi and the brilliant Martin Scorsese pulled it off beautifully in 1990 with the script for "Goodfellas"
"Goodfellas" remains America's penultimate crime film; the "Godfather" is Hollywood's version of what wiseguys are like; "Goodfellas" depicts them as how they really are.
This Faber paperback edition of the screenplay, with a foreward by David Thompson ("Scorsese on Scorses") reproduces all of the dialouge verbatim (including the scenes that were improvised on the set such as the famous "what's so funnny about me" sequence between Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta).
The book serves as both as written testamint to what great movie making is all about and as a primer for budding screenwriters.
As a bonus, there is a listing of all the music Scorcese used on the soundtrack (no small part of what made the movie a classic),including those selections that were unfortunately deleted from the commercial issue on Atlantic records).
As Joe Pesci's character might say--"this is one great -------book!"
A classic screenplay to a classic film........2000-03-19
Though Nicholas Pileggi's source book, Wise Guy, gave this screenplay both its voice-over and its final conclusion, the screenplay to GoodFellas is an essential addition to any screenplay library. If not for the fact that Pileggi and Martin Scorsese have pulled off the mammoth task of interpreting the detailed-packed, wide-scoped vision of the book into cinema-speak, then for the writing itself. GoodFellas is a screenplay that can be read as entertainment -- fast-paced, crisp, clear, and exciting. The published version of this script is mostly in master-scene form, giving only the most evocative details, beautifully paced. This is one of the crowning entries in Faber and Faber's superb screenplay series, ranking right up there along Paul Schrader's Taxi Driver and Odets/Lehmann's for Sweet Smell of Success. To any upstart screenwriter or serious student of film, this series is invaluable.

Alan is a boxing trainer and promoter, known as the "pirate promoter" because he champions the cause of unlicensed boxing, who has become an outspoken Christian evangelist with a passion for bringing Christ to the villians and hard men among whom he lives and works. Inspiring.......2005-03-09
This is a really inspiring book. It's the story of a London criminal and how he finds a way out of his destructive lifestyle. At times, it's very moving. I couldn't put it down. An inspiring book.
Brilliant!.......2005-03-08
This is an unusual book. It's about a London criminal and how he finds a way out of crime. Alan Mortlock descends into violence, drugs and drink. The author Greg Watts tells the story wit great skill and pace. I read the book in an evening. At the end of it, I felt really inspired. This is one of the best books I have read this year.

Book Description
After a quarter of a century of silence, Henry Hill can finally tell us the rest of the story. Gangsters and Goodfellas picks up where Wiseguy left off, taking readers on the crazy ride of Henry's life--hiding out in the Witness Protection Program, doing prison time for drug charges, testifying in high profile, heavily-guarded mafia trials, leaving his wife and children and eventually ending up in, yes, the entertainment business.
