Perhaps more importantly than anything else about the kit, this vision improvement kit has taught me that my eyesight is NOT a static thing, I am NOT damned to poor sight; my eyesight changes every minute - and with the help of Schneider's activities and thorough guidebook, I've come to be very aware of that. Schneider explains to us that our eyes are a very integral part of our mind and our way of thinking (he goes as far as to call them a part of the brain), and that like any other part of our body, only if we take good care of them can we expect them to perform well. The exercises, included CDs, and guidebook are intended to teach us how to "pay attention" to our eyes, and he is right when he says that they'll respond!

I've been using the exercises on and off for two weeks. You're supposed to do them daily but I haven't found the time; even so, I notice not only a marked improvement in my eyesight, but also a closer and more constant awareness of them (when they're tired and so forth) and a better understanding of how to respond to their state. If your leg twinges when you walk, you generally rest a bit or massage it or go to the doctor; but a lot of people don't even rest their eyes for a minute if their eye is hurting. Now that I understand better how the eyes work (entirely thanks to this package and experimenting with the exercises), caring for them is just a matter of common sense... if you care at all about your physical and mental well-being and have even a half-hour per day to dedicate to yourself, this kit is well-worth the $30!

This book is by now an accepted classic in the field. It is basically the only textbook that covers so much of computational linguistics, so I have had no choice but to use it for the past several years. Just the same, I'd rather not use it for teaching linguistics students. While the book has much to offer the professional, including a broad range of topics extensively researched, it is much more useful in this "handbook" capacity than as a textbook for the uninitiated. The chief reasons for this are: 1) It is pedagogically very poor; the majority of concepts are either explained in a confusing and obfuscatory manner or are not explained and are simply left in algorithmic form. This is not usually edifying to the linguistics student with no computer science background. 2) There are too many mistakes in its algorithms and method overviews. So far as I can see, even the famed Earley parsing algorithm is wrong here, it will not yield the correct output. 3) It is not written in a language that linguistics students can understand. With no background in mathematics, computer science, or pseudocode, such students need much more coddling than is provided by this book, and they are virtually unable to read it. Basically, as the title to this review states, what is called for now is a book to explain the contents of this book. Perhaps if my students keep encouraging me to write it. . .

something which I can use - I am a linguist - and found it immensly readable and useful

The a good introduction to NLP, but could be improved.......2003-04-16

This book helped me accomplish what I set out to do; namely to obtain an overview of the field of natural language processing, with an emphasis on language understanding (as opposed to recognition). And I can recommend it on that level. The weakness of the book however is that it left me asking, "OK, now what?". The book started off strong with a number of dynamic-programming algorithms, finite automaton models, and N-grams that one could sink his/her teeth into from an algorithmic point-of-view. But when it came to actual techniques for natural-language understanding (chapters 14-17) the goods were not delivered. The algorithms disappeared, and the best I could find was in Chapter 15 an incomplete, and unconvincing treatment of Hiyan Alshawi's semantic parsing techniques which fueled the Core Language Engine last decade. Chapter 16 dealt with lexical semantics and was almost entirely devoid of algorithms.

My gut feeling after reading this text is that parsing techniques will likely give way to statistical and probabilistic learning methods that will in some sense bypass the need to correctly or accurately parse language. I cannot fault the authors for not exploring this in more depth,as this represents the cutting edge for both NLP and artificial intelligence. In any case, I'm off to read Schutze and Manning's book which will hopefully provide a bit more focus on that perspective. What intrigues me is that most people can understand some language, but very few people understand the grammar of their own language, especially if they have been deprived of a formal education. So why should computers need to know all about grammar rules and parsing? Could they instead be trained by simply being exposed to enough interactions between language and objects? I teach in a department dominated by both foreign and immigrant students. I understand them most of the time, but I would estimate that half the time their sentences or utterances would not fail to be parsed correctly.

Good oveview, slightly overrated: broad and shallow.......2002-05-26

GENERAL IDEA: Broad coverage, it lacks depth and details - particularly practical details. That is, the presentation is often sketchy, mainly because it approaches too many subjects for its available space. I would not say that this book is strong on theory either. It is quite obvious that it avoids getting too formal and precise, probably to remain attractive for non-specialists too.

CASE STUDY: One specific problem I had with the Hidden Markov Models, that are supperficially presented (or spread I could say) in several separate sections of the book, so it's not been a pleasure trying to actually understand them properly and completely as a fundamental concept, to make them work in my particular application.

TITLE: The book's title IS misleading because it starts with "Speeech" and this book's main subject is not speech but (written) language. Actually there are only a few chapters on speech.

CONCLUSION: Get this book if you are looking for a good overview of the field. The book will introduce you to a thousand of topics. As soon as you need in-depth coverage of some particular topic, you will look for additional resources.

Good, but many errors.......2002-05-20

This book is a great general introduction to NLP, covering a broad range of topics. Unfortunately there are many errors in the mathematical formulae and the algorithm descriptions, so do make sure to download the errata list from the book's home page.

I especially loved this short novel. It was fast, fun, and rang in the holiday spirit! Read it two years ago during Christmas; it's become a holiday tradition and a relaxing break for myself during the busy holiday season! Draw yourself a bubble bath, grab the book, and head for the tub. It's a great escape and you deserve it! Enjoy!

I have read the first four books from the Stephanie Plum series and found them rather enjoyable. This book however is awful. It is quite obvious that this book was written in lightning speed with not much thought or editing. I was quickly becoming a fan of Janet Evanovich but this book has turned me away from her slightly.

I love the Stephanie Plum books but I didn't like this one enough to finish it. I'll stick to the number books and pass on the specials from now on. I didn't like the Thanksgiving one either.

Pretty Good Read.......2007-05-06

Janet Evanovich is a great Author. I was disappointed in this Christmas book, however. It seemed that she had rushed to meet the deadline or something. Just not as good as all the others. I did however enjoy reading another book from one of my favorite authors.

Spreading a little holiday cheer.......2007-04-05

This is a 'Stephanie Plum' story but not part of the regular series. In this novella (not full length novel) Stephanie is surprised to find a strange man in her apartment, one who can apparently get through locked doors and is rather coy about his true identity. Stephanie is really not happy about his arrival since it is four days before Christmas and she has been too busy working on a case to get anything done. So while tracking down the elusive 'Sandy Claws' Stephanie is also trying to locate a Christmas tree, presents for her family and friends, and decorate her apartment - all while dragging her new shadow, Diesel, along. Her family also gets into the act giving Stephanie more problems to deal with.

This happened to be the first Stephanie Plum book I have read and it is definitely not a good place to start. A fan of the series might enjoy this much more but it frankly reminded me of fan fiction.

Required Reading.......2007-08-08

The material in this book should be put in the public's face daily via media, billboards, etc. It should be required reading. Every mother should understand that a disposable diaper takes 500 years to biodegrade (and as those chemicals in the diaper biodegrade, they pollute and cause potential carcinogens).

I would not call the book "bipartisan" as per some of the other reviews, and I think its bashing of the Bush administration (even though I am not a fan) detracted from the overall book. However, it is important reading; it had an impact on my behavior.

Stories of Hope.......2007-08-02

I was a little skeptical with this book being written by John Kerry. I wasn't sure what to expect. It gives some really good stories of everyday people who just wanted to make a change for the better. They weren't any sort of extremists or hippies. Just people with common sense and the determination to stand up for their right to live in a clean world.

KERRY gETS IT RIGHT.......2007-06-18

Kerry analyzes today;s environmental experts and gets it right. The book is passionate, well researched, spot on and well written. I was pleasantly surprised.

I think Kerry was at his best early in the book when he evaluated some of the current plans for saving the Earth. He got a little off track as the book progressed, then veered back on track in the last 100 pages.

I highly recommend this book for anybody who cares about the planet. Also recommended: "Earth In The Balance" by Al Gore. Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit

Encouragement for activism.......2007-06-09

This book is both inspiring and upsetting. Inspiring for the stories of success in opposing pollution and degradation of the environment and restoration to a more healthy one. It is upsetting to read of the abuses and pollution creating dangerous places to live.

It is a call to action that we all need to consider. I got many good ideas about issues I hadn't thought about and it made me think about my local situation. It's good to know people have won battles and corrected abuses.

The Kerrys continue a fine tradition of first-class environmentalist discussion.......2007-05-31

I know what you're thinking: Ol' Coffee Coaster guy there, bringing up these environmental arguments and publications, is straying in the direction of tree-hugging, snail-darter-saving, rain-forest-worshipping commie pinko ecototalitarianism. 'Has his way, the state's gonna swarm the neighborhood with carbon cops who will drag away anyone grilling steaks.

Au contraire (though I must confess lately to thinking excessively about the CO2 dumped into the atmosphere by charcoal fires). Fact is I'm simply becoming more and more aware of my accommodations on Spaceship Earth as it hurtles through the cosmos.

The Kerrys' new book picks up from a couple of other excellent books and movies on free-market environmentalism that I've reviewed hereon: Crimes against Nature by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery, and An Inconvenient Truth via Al Gore...

I love this set of prayers of the giants of the reformation era. These are model prayers for all Christians to listen to; memorize; and emulate. Fantastic! Max Mclean is a great orator. I have his reading of KJV BIBLE ;George Whitfield; and many others. I buy every thing he produces except other versions of the BIBLE. His best I think is SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD by Jonathan Edwards. That has become my favorite sermon of all time. I have bought numerous copies for gifts to give away. You won't be dissapointed with any of his readings or visual dramas of books of the BIBLE on DVD'S. Ted Allen

Learn to pray your heart out........2006-09-02

To paraphrase the Christian Research Institute's "Bible Answer Man," Hank Hanegraaff, [What can be more precious than secret communion with the Living God?], I say to that end, learning to pray your inmost thoughts and feelings to God can be found from the first entry that this resource provides.

Max McLean is so immensely talented in his readings of these Puritan prayers that you are carried away on the emotion he imputes to the text from the first sentence.

R.C. Sproul and his Ligonier Ministries, with their publishing division of "Soli Deo Gloria," brings Puritan resources like this to the airwaves (and webwaves) like no one else when they feature these readings.

I use this as a way to wake up and start my day, helping to focus my mind on God, who is the make-up of every Christian's reality -- transcending our day-to-day lives toward eternity.

America is a place where we can, more than ever before, be flooded with communication from God's mind to ours. The internet has made the Gospel ubiquitously available at just a couple clicks of a mouse. I hope this is not the last of this series. I really enjoy reading about these characters and the timeline in which they live. The passion between Roark and Eve is so intense; and yet they always get the job done. I love the time, the house, the plots, their friends, and the possibilities.

I am absolutely hooked on the "In Death" series by JD Robb (AKA Nora Roberts). I think that they are fresh, creative and entertaining. I really love the characters and look forward to what will happen with them next. This installment has everything that makes for a good read.....The plot is simple without giving too much away.....there is a psychopath/sociopath who is beating, multilating and killing brown haired girls in New York in the year 2059. He leaves his victims with red ribbons tied around their necks and their eyes removed. Yikes. Meanwhile, you have a psychic (Celina)who is attempting to assist Lieutenant Dallas decipher who is responsible for the deaths and why? But as you watch Eve unravel the mystery, you are able to see those characters that we have come to love so much, as well as see Eve and Roarke's love blossom and grow stronger. And any visit with Eve, Peabody, McNabb, Roarke, Mavis and Summerset is definately worth a read. I can't wait to read the next one.

Someone's killing women..........2007-04-01

...and it's up to Eve Dallas to find out why. This time, she's working with a psychic, and not so sure she's happy about it. But the women's visions are proving accurate. Will it be enough to catch the killer?

Another wonderful addition to the Eve and Roarke saga.

My First J. D. Robb.......2006-08-29

I have enjoyed Nora Robert's books for a long time and this is my first experience with J. D. Robb. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the relationships Eve Dallas has, especially with Roarke. Her inner battle with her past makes her more human. Her pain is evident. On a lighter note, I especially loved the section where she and Roarke are talking about being coaches to their friend who is having a baby. I read it to my husband and we laughed. This is a mystery after all but having a section like that in the book was refreshing. I look forward to reading more J. D. Robb. Peace Always.

Disappointed In Death.......2006-08-11

I have read every single 'In Death' book, and I have to say this is my least favorite of them all. There was hardly any focus on the main characters that we have come to know and love, and a killer that came out of nowwhere. I always look forward to the next episode in Eve & Roarke's life, and I hope the next one is better.

I was disapointed with this cd. The title,to me,promised some tangible way to connect better with your center. I thought the meditations were "trite" and not too effective. I learned one good breathing exercise on the cd or I would have rated it a one star.

The narrator goes through the seven chakras with a "christian" meditation for each. Her voice is not very soothing.
