Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Flying Through the Galaxy........2005-09-10

STAR PILOTS is actually an inaccurate title for this young readers Star Wars book. The book really doesn't have much to say about pilots, but is all about space craft flown in the Star Wars universe. While there are a few non-space vehicles described, e.g. podracers, most of the book is dedicated to famous Star Wars vehicles. X-Wings, TIE Fighters, the Millenium Falcon, the Executor, Slave 1, and the Invisible Hand are all mentioned as well as escape pods and Republican gunships. The book is filled with pictures from the movies, which makes it attractive for young readers. Though this is a level 3 book, many of the words seem more difficult than that too me. However, the books chronological order makes it easier to make sense of it all. Overall, this is a great book for young Star Wars fans.

5 out of 5 stars a tour of the great flying vehicles.......2005-06-04

"Star Pilot" is a tour of Star Wars' great flying vehicles. The title isn't entirely accurate since the focus isn't actually on pilots, but rather the machines. Beyond this, the scope is broader than space ships alone as the book includes pod racers and republic gunships. The scope includes the entire saga, starting with the droid control ship seen in the first minute of the "Phantom Menace" and ending with the Super Star Destroyer, seen in Episode six's final battle. The chronological order makes the book comfortable to follow. While the text is large, the vocabulary is much higher than the self-described level 3. The illustrations are large, high-quality and extracted from the films. While not comprehensive by any means, "Star Pilot" is an enjoyable tour of the most important vehicles of the Star Wars saga.

5 out of 5 stars great book for the young star wars fan.......2007-03-28

My five-year old absolutely loves this book! He's an early reader, but still, it would engage any kid who's into starwars...

4 out of 5 stars review of what is wookie:.......2007-03-10

This is the 1st book that my Kindergardner read cover to cover, over and over. We were bored with Dick and Jane and I am Sam books this is a great way to share a childs interest with a childs education.

5 out of 5 stars a great read for padawans.......2007-01-25

Narrated by C-3PO, "What is a Wookiee?" takes the reader on a tour of the various types of characters found throughout the Star Wars universe. In addition to meeting robots like R2-D2 and the pit droids, the tour features creatures such as Jabba the Hutt, Sebulba and of course Wookiees. The book covers the entire sage, from episode I to VI. What "Star Pilot" (also by Laura Buller) did with machines, "What is a Wookiee?" does with George Lucas' characters. In terms of the reading level, the book is perfect for most first and second graders. Both the pictures and text are large for young readers. While some illustrations are from studio stills, the majority of images are from the films. Most pages feature a vocabulary word that is reviewed on the last page. "What is a Wookiee?" should be in every young Star Wars fan's library.

5 out of 5 stars My 7-year old LOVED it........2005-06-02

This book is narrated by the Star Wars character C3PO, who introduces the reader to a number of the characters from Star Wars. The pictures are very good. The text was at just the right level for my 7-year old son. He was delighted to read it out loud to me, as he really wanted me to know more about the Star Wars characters he so dearly loves. This is a great price for a book many children will enjoy.

Book Description

Those who recognize that the original Tarzan is a literary creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs understand that the exploits of Tarzan are best explored through the magical medium of the printed word. Readers can experience a journey that lasts through 24 books and wanders not only into the jungle depths but farther down through the Earth's crust into the savage prehistoric land of Pellucidar. Also covered is the long out of print The Tarzan Twins as well as the recent Tarzan, the Lost Adventure and The Eternal Savage. This book serves as a literary guide to all the Tarzan novels. Section One provides an overview of Tarzan the character, including a list of the many names and titles used by and given to Tarzan; Section Two covers the mythical language used in the novels, including a dictionary of the ape language; Section Three enumerates the lost cities, civilizations, tribes, peoples and religions discovered by Tarzan, detailing their religious rites and locations; Section Four describes the characters (human and otherwise) found in the novels; and Section Five gives summaries of all 24 books that comprise the Burroughs canon. The book also includes over thirty illustrations from the series' various printings.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Over-Priced.......2004-05-09

This book reminds me of "The Burroughs Cyclopedia," a hardcover volume covering the characters, places, names, etc. of many more of Burroughs' works than simply the Tarzan series.

"Tarzan Novels" is a half-inch thick, standard sized trade paperback. That format alone makes me feel the $45 price is extravagant. The entries themselves, however, are much more in-depth than the same Tarzan-related entries in "The Burroughs Cyclopedia." Additionally, the illustrations are a welcome addition which is totally lacking in the straight text of TBC.

My caveat to the prospective buyer is that you are paying a premium price here. My personal thought is that $25 would be a fair price for this interesting volume. $45, however, is assuming a very generous donation from ERB fans.

5 out of 5 stars MMGAWA!.......2001-10-24

For those that love the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and specifically Tarzan this is the book for you. David Ullery has done a fantastic job in compiling ERB's Tarzon novels into one beautiful book. Anyone would be proud to add this one to their collection. As mentioned in a previous review, it may be a little higher priced but jeez we are talking Edgar Rice Burroughs. Great job Ullery!!!

3 out of 5 stars For fanatics..........2001-09-11

This work is obviously a labor of love by a real Burroughs fan. Without reference to the Tarzan of the movies or comic books, the author gives us all kinds of details on the real thing -- Tarzan as he appeared first and at his greatest, in the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Several sections list and describe various facets of the books, such as different languages referred to in the narratives, the lost cities and civilizations that Tarzan encounters, and plot summaries. In the Cast of Characters section it's interesting to discover that in several instances there are multiple characters with the same name, but who appear in different volumes.

My big gripe is how much it costs. It's ridiculously overpriced. I don't know what the publishers were thinking (maybe "there's a sucker born every minute"), but that's far too much for what you get. Sure, it has an index, and sure, there are vintage illustrations by Roy Krenkel and J. Allen St. John (no Frazetta). But it's "trade" size and a paperback, for crying out loud. If I'd seen it in a store (I ordered it through the mail) I'd expect it to be priced [lower]. And a casual perusal turned up a few errors. Most were just typos, but in one case at least there was a bigger error. The city of Castrum Mare in Tarzan and the Lost Empire is given here as "Castra" Mare, and this is repeated several times throughout the book. Don't buy this book unless (1) you're rich, or (2) you're an ERB fanatic that can't live without it. Or, of course, if the price comes down. It's definitely worth borrowing, naturally.

Four stars for content, two for the price.

Book Description

Liquid Metal brings together a great number of what are regarded to be the 'seminal' essays that have opened up the study of science fiction to serious critical interrogation. It is divided into eight distinct themed sections, including the cyborg in science fiction; the science fiction city; time travel and the primal scene; science fiction fandom; and the 1950s invasion narratives. Important writings by Susan Sontag, Vivian Sobchack, Steve Neale, J.P. Telotte, Peter Biskind and Constance Penley are included.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Repetition.......2007-09-02

This book is broken down into different case studies or critical essays. It is 100% on critical theories. The editor tends to repeat himself incessantly in each chapter (I've even seen a whole two sentences repeatedly word for word). The good part is he keeps up with contemporary films and critiques them with as much enthusiasm as the oldies, but to get the basics of his point, all you need to do is skim each chapter and read the topic sentences. He likes to talk just for the sake of talking.

    Book Description

What in contemporary cinema is a horror film and what is a science fiction movie? Blade Runner (1982) is as much film noir as science fiction, and it is a literary adaptation. The latest remake of The Mummy (1999) is more an effects fantasy or action/adventure than straightforward horror. Whatever your viewpoint, the best of these movies have generated cults and imitations and the worst have a wonderfully perverse appeal all of their own.
This new volume in the Sight and Sound readers series provides a varied and diverse overview of trends that have shaped sci-fi/horror in the last decade. It explores how recent films like The Fight Club and The Truman Show have impinged on more traditional territory and have tested the limits of conventional understandings of these most central of genres.
The book engages with a host of topics that have emerged over the last decade: vampire movies, body horror, the nuclear threat, childhood terror, artificial worlds, and postmodern horror. It includes fresh looks at classics such as Rosemary's Baby, Psycho, Halloween, Nosferatu, and Blade Runner, as well as 90s highlights the Scream series, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Strange Days Existenz, and Cube.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any film buff........2002-06-10

If you can't afford or simply can't find issues of the excellent British film magazine, SIGHT AND SOUND, then this book is for you. It is essentially a compliation of reviews, articles and interviews from the magazine with the focus on science fiction and predominantly horror films.

Assembled and edited (with the occasional review written) by Kim Newman, this book is a fantastic overview of these two genres in the past decade. He traces the rise and fall of the teenage postmodern horror film (i.e. SCREAM) and even devotes a chapter to Kubrick's influence on the science fiction and horror genre.

Whether I agree or disagree with the views expressed in the book, I was always impressed by the quality of writing. S&S only publishes the best writers and shows why the British film magazines are so much better than their fluffy US equivalents (i.e. PREMIERE).

If you like substantial, thoughtprovoking film criticism, this is the book to buy.

      Book Description

From "Ma Perkins" and "One Man's Family" in the 1930s to "All My Children" in the 1980s, the soap opera has capture the imagination of millions of American men and women of all ages. In Speaking of Soap Operas, Robert Allen undertakes a reexamination of the production and consumption of soap operas through the use of a unique investigatory model based on contemporary poetics and reader-response theory.

Although a considerable amount of research has been conducted on these programs, Allen argues that soap operas remain a phenomenon about which much is said but little is known. Soap operas are different from most other media programming—they appear formless, refuse to end, require little work on the part of the viewer, and bear no recognizable marks of authorship. For these and other reasons, soap operas resist explanation from both traditional aesthetic and empiricist social science perspectives.

The daytime dramatic serials generate nearly a billion dollars in revenue each year for the three commercial networks. Allen discusses in detail the economic and institutional functions of these programs in addition to the context of their production. He also considers the historical development of the soap opera as advertising vehicle, narrative structure and "women's fiction."

Speaking of Soap Operas is based on the author's own experiences as a soap opera viewer; extensive interviews with soap opera writers, producers, and actors; and the papers of Irna Phillips, creator of dozens of successful ratio and television soap operas. Drawing also upon trade publications, popular periodicals, and broadcast archives, this work is an important contribution to the field of mass communication.
