brief and well written.......2005-08-25
This little book could easily have been a fully fledged tome. Loss surveys the popular American media in the 1960s. He shows how it echoed and in turn fed back on the burning issues of the times. The Vietnam War and the civil rights movement.
There is discussion of politics at the Federal level, with the actions of US Presidents being key events. But Loss manages to tie this all into a narrative that also encompasses analysis of the rock and roll scene and the counterculture.
The book is aimed at an undergraduate or high school reader, as a quick synopsis of trends that Loss traces back to 1945 and the emergence of the US from the Second World War. He hopes to whet the reader's appetite for more detailed reading of these vast topics.

This is a great book for any Ipod owner, seeing how what you get with your new Ipod is very little. It shows how much more than listening to music that these little guys can do!

Customer Reviews:
Worth the price for the Technical Info.......2006-12-06
This book is a great education in what a music supervisor does and needs to know. The spotlight interviews are informative and give the reader a practical application of the text. The technical aspects of the job were eye opening and extensive. A must read for anyone who thinks music supervision entails picking songs from an iPod and placing them to picture. I have a greater appreciation for good music supervisors after reading Music Supervision.
Simply Amazing.......2006-07-20
This book came to me out of nowhere and consequently turned into one of the most inspiring, captivating, and education texts that I have ever read. In this, the summer of 2006, I have currently been working as an intern for MTV On-Air Promos. There, I met David Hnatiuk and overlooked his profession as a music supervisor. Having interest and aspirations for his work (being a music industry and sound recording major), I decided to purchase "Music Supervision".
So, I got it- I read it- and loved it!
Reading "Music Supervision" flat out bridged the gap between everything I learned at the University of New Havem concerning the music industry and sound recording and everything that was coming as new to me from MTV about broadcast television and its promotion. The books facets including, but not limited to: Legal Issues, Sound Design, Licensing, DAW discussion, working with producers/directors, etc. are all topics that I learned and dealt with at school and at MTV.
This coincidence of reflection between these that I encovered was simply amazing and will prove to be beneficial to my success and education at MTV and as a music student.
Aside from teaching me about my loves and interests, the book also took my vision of my career and future life, twisted and distorted it, and showed me it as I have imagined before. Now, since the book educated me on the subject and how to succeed in it, being a music supervisor is now a career path that I am interested in pursuing. It entails the music industry. It entails sound recording. And hopefully, it'll someday entail me.
Great book for getting your songs into movies.......2006-07-07
I bought this book because I wanted to learn how I can get my songs into movies and tv. I heard that was the best way to make money and get exposure. This book gave me the answers and even the names of people who select music for films and tv. I already got one of my songs into a film that competed in Tribeca Film festival. Some of the writing is a little long handed but the information is really right on. If you are a songwriter who wants to get your tunes into the movies, this is the book for you.
SUPERVISING YOUR MUSICAL FUTURE.......2006-06-14
Congratulations to Ramsay Adams, David Hnatiuk, and David Weiss. They have succeeded in writing a book that is highly informative, useful, and very insightful. Whether you are interested in pursuing a career as a music supervisor, or would simply like to do research on the profession, this book will far exceed your expectations. It's an easy read that features random interviews from experienced music supervisors that candidly articulate what the primary considerations are in selecting music, and shines light on the process of "spotting" and "auditioning" songs for placement, in addition to offering helpful advice on how to deal with challenges that music supervisors face in their position such as difficulties in obtaining master, sync and mechanical licenses; working harmoniously with egotistical producers and directors; managing creative conflicts; preventing legal problems; dealing with financial constraints; and marketing their services. A great educational and reference resource.
This book is my future.......2006-06-03
This is the most informative/coolest book, if your looking to get involved in the music business, the book is aweosme, but the guys are even cooler
Customer Reviews:
Interesting.......2006-11-07
An interesting if not biased look at the life (and art?) of Roger Corman. Essential reading for low-budget filmmaking.
Very interesting read for pop culture, film and business buffs.......2006-06-24
I'm not sure of how I happened upon this biography, but I'm glad I did. I'm not particularly a Roger Corman fan, having seen perhaps three or four of his films without really noticing that Corman had a part in their making.
Corman's life is interesting. Not only was he probably the most successful independent filmaker in history, he was also mentor and first-chance for many of today's leading producers, directors, writers and stars.
Remarkably down to earth and honest, Corman admits that his life has not been totally fulfilling: like many successful people, success is never enough - there's always one more challenge down the road and more than one challenge left unexplored in the past.
Corman engages in some, but not deep, analysis of his films, explains his evolving political philosophy and provides snippets that from another author might be construed as name-dropping. But Corman was there and it's his interactions with these people he's talking about, so it's not in the least obnoxious.
Above all, the value of Corman's book may not be to film buffs, but to business people, especially small scale entrepreneurs. Corman's management methods and his approach to filmaking were true nose-to-the-grindstone. He knew his market; he studied his market; he created his product to appeal to his market and he kept costs down to a minimum in order to reduce his risk of loss.
Quite a guy and his biography is worth the couple of hours it takes to read it.
Jerry
You'll Understand Corman Better.......2005-06-26
To this day, I haven't seen one Corman film I've liked. Still, this book is a nice look into the world of low-budget producing. It gave me the opportunity to truly understand my disdain for Corman and AIP.
Most of the book focuses on three or four of the productions Corman is most proud of. I would have preferred him spending additional time on his more obscure films. Teenage Caveman only gets a paragraph or two written about it.
A documentary would have been a more appropriate format for this material than a book. It would have been much shorter that way at the very least. Then again, Corman always had a knack for dragging things out in his films. Ever seen Swamp Diamonds?
The main theme of the book seems to be, "Yeah, Corman's films were bad, but he did pretty good for what he had." That doesn't take away the fact that they're bad films. Don't watch them unless you have a high threshold of pain.

i love this book. i love this man. i love what he has done with very little money and some big....imagination. i love women, cereal, movies, and water. and i love roger corman too.

Good book from the king of Trash.......2003-11-12
First, this is really a 1990 book, and all information pertains to 1988 and prior. I enjoy exploitation films and this book adds to my enjoyment. Many films today are boring and darkly filmed. Just a bunch of special effects done on a computer. It's nice to know that many of Roger Corman films are still available. Maybe not at you local Wal Mart, but they do appear on TV occasionally. This book provides information to further my appreciation of what Roger Corman was able to accomplish during his life-time. Well through 1988, anyway.

A well researched academic trawl through visual fabland.......1999-04-07
Taking the Beatles' incursions into the world of film chapter by chapter, this fascinating and well-researched book uses reminiscences of people who were there to create a thorough and absorbing account of the construction of a uniquely varied visual repertoire. The author's enthusiasm for the material in question is tempered by a willingness to probe deeply and critically into the guts of the Beatles' creative processes. Despite the somewhat dry academic style of this book, I still found myself reading it from cover to cover, almost in one sitting. This is a recommended book on a seminal but often scorned chapter in movie history.
Book Description
This groundbreaking book takes the reader behind the closed doors of the editing room where Sam O'Steen along with some of the world's top directors controlled the fate of many legendary films. Editors don't usually sit on movie sets, but Sam was there through the entire shoot and his editing tales are spiced with juicy anecdotes about exotic locations and colorful producers, directors, and stars.
Customer Reviews:
A compelling mix of a master at work and celebrity intriques.......2002-03-29
This book documents the creative evolution of the editor's role in Hollywood. Sam and Bobbie O'Steen weave a fascinating tale of how Sam worked his way from messenger at Warner Bros. to 'a pair of hands cutter' to master artist crafting the most amazing films that emerged after the fall of the studio system: "Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf", "Catch 22","Carnal Knowledge", "Chinatown". He worked with the top artists of his time and shares many unique and special anecdotes about them. Along the way he gives us insight into a master editor at work, writing about the choices and changes that can make a good film, great. A great addition to film fan or film students library.
Required Reading.......2002-03-23
Sam and Bobbie O'Steen have given us an exceptional mix of Sam's takes on all the elements that go into movie making - human, technical, personalities, talent/no talent and gossip - in a way that made me feel as though I was in a living room listening to Sam O'Steen tell stories. What a treat.
Sam O'Steen's editor's view of movie making combined with quite a cutting sense of life is unique. His throw away lines about some executives and stars are very telling. His generosity talking about editing brings great sense to the whole movie making process, and his body of work (Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, The Graduate, Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, Catch 22, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood, Working Girl, and all the rest...) allows him to speak with an earned cockiness. This book is a treasure for anyone who loves movies.
Very highly recommended for any film student or movie buff.......2002-03-21
Cut To The Chase: Forty-five Years Of Editing America's Favorite Movies is a rare look into the film editor's trade. In the format of an extended interview of Hollywood legend Sam O'Steen, editor of such renowned movies as "The Graduate," "Chinatown," and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?", and with the assistance of his wife, Bobbie O'Steen (herself an experienced writer and former film editor) covers all aspects of the creative movie making process as it really is in the lumbering, confusing, and sometimes merciless machine that is Hollywood. Showcasing the stars that he worked with, and much more, Cut To The Chase is very highly recommended for any film student or movie buff curious about what really goes on behind the silver screen.
not as much actual editing info as expected.......2002-02-18
While I do recomend this book as a good insight into the politics of making a major motion picture, I found it lacking in the one area it should have exceled in-editing. As an editor myself I was looking for more insight to O'Steen's thought process and editiorial technique and less behind the scenes gossip. Skip all the chapters after "Chinatown". It is a good read up to that point.
A Must-Read For Film Fans.......2002-02-10
This is one of the best books about the film business I've ever read. Legendary film editor Sam O'Steen tells all about his craft and about the importance of the relationship between editor and director. In doing so, we learn how the editor's role was crucial in shaping some of the greatest films of the last forty years including Who's Afraid Of Virgina Wolf, The Graduate, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood and others. The book is the transcribed conversations between Sam and his wife and fellow editor, Bobbie O'Steen. It is remarkably intimate and wonderful in its backstage gossip as Bobbie gets a great performance from Sam, a classic storyteller who pulls no punches. Critical insight into the technique of filmmaking is mixed with racous and often breathtaking tales of Hollywood before parents began sending their kids to film school as an alternative to being a doctor.

A little more difficult than expected.......2007-09-08
We bought this for our two kids who are playing level 3 piano and found it to be more difficult that expected. They have lost interest in playing the songs right now, but we hope that in a year or so they my try again.
Great Variety, Decent Arrangments.......2007-04-18
I am a piano teacher, and my students have loved looking through this book for ideas. The variety of titles is great, and for the price, it's an awesome deal. Most of the arrangements are excellent.
As advertised has some of the more recent Disney tunes.......2006-07-17
As advertised this volume contains songs from the more recent Disney movies though "Lilo and Stitch" which was released in 2002 is the newest. I really liked the arrangements from "Aladdin" "Lion King" "Beauty and the Beast" "Hunchback" and "Toy Story". The rest of the songs didn't seem to be as melodic perhaps because I'm not very familiar with the songs and movies where they originated. Full lyrics are included as well as musical introductions and transitions. Some selections are as long as sixteen pages though most range from six - ten pages. The pieces are pretty easy to play though some songs venture out of the keys of C and F where most beginners are most comfortable. All in all a good collection.
Did Not Recieve.......2006-03-07
I ordered my Disney Music book on January 28th from Amazon and I still have not recieved it and it is now March 6th. Please get back to me thanks.
Great Scores for Beginners.......2005-09-17
If you love Disney music and want to be able to play those tunes, this is a great book that covers most of the more recent song.

Book Description
The most famous movie cowboy of the movies died violently in 1940 and is virtually forgotten today because all but ten of his films were silent movies.
Tom Mix was a town marshal and cowboy in the Oklahoma Territory, a rodeo champion and a wild west show performer. With his devil-may-care attitude, quick wit and penchant for doing breath-taking stunts on his wonder horse, Tony, Tom Mix went on to become the #1 movie cowboy of silent films, earning millions of dollars at a time when movie tickets cost pennies. Mix performed for over 71,000,000 fans through his film and live performances and became famous the world over for his squeaky clean image. In his time he was as famous as baseball great Babe Ruth and world champion boxer Jack Dempsey, both of whom were his friends.
While he basked in this incredible acclaim, Tom Mix lived in fear that his deep, dark secrets would be discovered and his career and his cherished image would be destroyed.
Celebrated author Richard D. Jensen has spent more than 30 years researching the life of Tom Mix, the man hailed as "the idol of every American boy."
With incredible detail, much of it gained from hundreds of original letters, records, documents and eyewitness accounts of Mix's life, The Amazing Tom Mix cuts through 100 years of public relations mythology, tall tales and outright lies to bring the true and inspiring story of a man whose Saturday matinee cowboy image would become the standard for all of the movie cowboys who rode the silver screen after him.
"Here is Tom Mix as he really was...a captivating biography ... brilliant ... delightful ... It is a splendid book."
Richard S. Wheeler, five-time Spur Award winning author of Trouble In Tombstone.
"... the most complete biography of Mix's life of trials, tribulations and victories."
John Duncklee, author of Bull By The Tale.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating book about nearly forgotten hero.......2005-10-04
"The Amazing Tom Mix" reads like a novel but it's a biography, which to me made it all the more enjoyable. I only knew a little about Tom Mix but my parents remembered him, so I read it and then gave it to them to read. All of us agreed that the book was fascinating. There is so much detail in the book, but you don't get bogged down in it. It's just a great book.
A fascinating and educational book.......2005-09-29
This is one of the most thoroughly researched film biographies I have ever seen. This book relates the life story of Tom Mix, the silent movie star who dominated Hollywood in its early years. Jensen has provided extensive documentation of all the information contained in this work, including material from original sources stored in the back rooms of libraries and museums. Due to the research and reliance on original documents (personal letters, court records, etc.), there is a considerable amount of material contained in this book that has never been published before now. This book is a true tribute to Tom Mix, and will serve as the definitive biography of his life and career for many years to come.
Tom Mix & Tony ride again !!.......2005-08-20
One of the better books on Tom Mix.I really enjoyed this one,it
tells the Mix story warts & all.Apart from spelling errors & some incorrect facts Mix fans will go for this one.A good proof
reader would have helped!!!
John,"B" Western fan.
Finally a book about Tom Mix that documents the truth!.......2005-07-08
I loved this book and agree with these two reviews that were on the back cover:
"Here is Tom Mix as he really was ... captivating ... enchanting ... a splendid book."
- Richard S. Wheeler, five-time Spur Award winning author of "Trouble In Tombstone."
"...the most complete biography of Mix's life of trials, tribulations and victories."
- John Duncklee, author of "Bull By The Tale."
