This is a good product if your scanner does not have the codes internal to the device. Codes for all major automobile manufacturers are included in the reference guide. I bought the CP9180 which made the reference guide
obsolete.

A waste of money.......2007-02-19

I bought this on Amazon's recommendation when I purchased an OBD II reader here. The book is just a list of every car's code followed by a one sentence description. The OBD II reader provides the same information in its user's manual and online documentation. Hopefully you read this before you spend any money on this item.

Terrific information for beginning racers.......2007-07-16

This book provides a terrific introduction to track driving with enough depth to provide an on-going reference as you work to improve your driving. As a beginner working toward a racing license, this book clearly provides a good structure for improving driving skills.

Best available resource, but it's due for an update........2007-05-21

I have about 15 instructed on-track days under my belt, and this book told me a LOT about the physics underlying the instruction I have received. It is a fantastic aggregation of wisdom. A lot of on-track instruction is simply, "do this" or "do that" but there's relatively discussion of why you do things. This book spells it out.

70% of the book is timeless because the laws of physics well never change, and car dynamics do not really change. The remaining 30% could by updated. Specifically, the discussion of "showroom stock" racers, street radials and street brakes are starting to show their age. Showroom stock cars are a lot more advanced than the Taurus SHO they use as an example.

My suggestion? Update the discussion, improve the images, and consider analyzing 25 challenging turns from tracks around the world. The analysis of Sebring was a great way to apply the physics lessons; and I would extend that to other tracks and turns.

I think this is a really good book for the novice driver, who wants to understand how to drive high performance cars on a track. very informative and good graphic illustrations.

Excellent and comprehensive book.......2007-03-06

I bought this book to help me get better laps times in GTR 2. GTR 2 is such a realistic simulation that arcade driving techniques just don't work. This book is absolutely amazing. It covers every possible detail---maintaining traction in corners, braking and cornering strategies and techniques, spin prevention and recovery, etc. By applying the lessons in this book, I have greatly improved lap times in GTR 2, and I also have a greater understanding of the physics and planning involved in modern racing.

The level of detail in this book is astounding. No details are left out. In the chapter covering shifting, they explain in detail why you should blip the throttle when downshifting, including the effect that blipping the throttle has on the engine, transmission, and grip at the rear wheels. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in automobile racing.

Good luck finding this much information about vehicle dynamics in any other book, that is as well put together and easy to comprehend as this one. Well suited to those with engineering/math/science related backgrounds but not all of the information is beyond grasp of most people.

I think i've bought this book a bit too early in my learning curve!
This is a book intended for the Professional Race Engineer, or an extremely motivated amateur.
It contains a wealth of mathematics for vehicle dynamics.
Very exciting, i expect to have years of fun with the various chapters in this book.

Excellent Source of Vehicle Dynamic Information.......2006-03-14

Milliken lays down the fundamentals and advanced topic of vehicle dynamics as applied to racecars. The text is not for beginning or nontechnical readers in the slightest manner. Milliken points out many subtle and difficult areas to understand, which take hours of studying to fully grasp. For those seriously considering a career in this field or to the extremely interested reader, this text is the source of information.

I am a mechanical engineer. I am very into my hobby of race cars. I have a stack of books on chassis, suspnsion and overall race car design. This book is by far the best and most comprehensive of them all. I have benefited more from this book than any of the others. I will def be purchasing the work book to go along with this.

Not what I needed.......2006-10-14

I was looking for hardcore material on OBD. I too was fooled by the preview. You can find the same info on the Internet. The book publishers have done a fantastic job of packaging and making an ordinary book with common information look exceptional. What people want to know is how to use the information in the powertrain control module to solve problems. This book simply tells you what's available in OBD 2 not what to do with the info. Pages are devoted to OBD 2 codes that can be found on the Internet. If you need a glossy intro to OBD 2 this is it.

Doesn't deliver the goods.......2006-06-12

This book doesn't reveal any secrets,or for that matter much information. It is rather long on OBD II theory and has a fairly good chapter on scan tool selection but falls far short in the diagnostic department. I had hoped this book would have information on acceptable sensor values, troubleshooting / diagnostic charts, etc. As far as diagnosis goes, this book is just one small step ahead of a trouble code chart. Since most of the newer scan tools incorporate this information in the tool itself I would recommend that you save the price of this book and apply it to a better tool.

Not what I expected.......2005-03-28

I thought from reading the sample pages that this book would explain codes and a brief explanation as to what to check for each code. It was more of an overview of ODBII with some details I could use.

Poor.......2005-03-15

This book is only good for a reference guide for Ford and
GM trouble codes. The book doesn't help any one who is trying
to repair a really troublesome problem;in fact, it doesn't
help in trouble shooting simple problems. Problems that could
be fixed by simply turning the gas cap an extra turn or two.
I only blame my self for wasting my hard earned money. Please
take my advice and don't be fooled by the books good reviews,
wich are odviously writen by people who are not professional
technicians.

OBDII Diagnostics Secrets Revealed.......2004-03-18

I can only 1/2 recommend this book.
Given in CA every other car is Audi, VW, Volvo, Saab, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, MB, etc.
This book only covers Ford GM and Chrysler.

However, given there are so few books of any description on OBDII or EOBD, this serves as a good beginner for the DIY enthusiast.
However, I would appreciate if a similar book existed to cover all the missed applications above.
In addition, the named missing names above are also the most likely NOT to provide this type of information in their Official Workshop Manuals, so the need is even greater than for Ford, GM and Chry.

The cars are much better than the girls. The women generally are not classy looking. Maybe that is what David Perry had in mind. The cover shot is the best pinup shot. The photography is super.

I love this book. It shows fashion from various eras and adds the rough style of classic cars. The history is a good added bonus, but the pictures are more interesting to look at. Very colorful and exciting.

Great photography,with some great babes draped over cool cars.
Dave Perry has a way of photographing period perfect clothed girls in provocative ways that make the girls a counterpoint to beater rods. If you've got a grain of warm blood still pulsing though your veins then these girls will quicken the pulse.

The book is awsome. His choice of cars and models is right m*#@ing on!

Zing without the badda bing!.......2005-07-22

David perry (along with Chas Ray Kriger) is one of the two best photographic exponents of the future noir pinup genre. I waited a long time for the release of this book, and as I expected,the photographs are wonderful. Pity the book has been let down with some of the worst publishing design I have seen in ages. The cheesy slogans etc posted over the photographs and the annoying black boxes with model and car info in the corner of each photo are very distracting. The photographs speak well enough for themselves and would have been much better suited to full page spreads (as in David Perry's Hot Rod book) without the annoyingly colourful graphic design vomit on each page. Anyway if you dig pin up photography its still worth your dough..

The value of what you are getting for the price with this set is incredible. There are 11 total discs including the introduction, 8 lessons discs and 2 bonus discs. It includes 3 books (1 for each level) and a case to carry it all in.

The format is good, with English words and phrases followed by a pause then 2 Spanish repetitions each followed by a pause. This gives you a chance to test yourself after the English when you think you've learned and the chance to practice either learning or pronunciation after each of the Spanish.

The books are great, because if you learn like me, they have exactly the same lessons in written format so you can follow along or confirm what you have heard in writing. This has cleared up some pronunciation issues for me.

My only regret with this set, is that the order of the lessons seems to be geared for someone who needs to learn words and phrases a traveler would need first. There are some basics first and then immediately, on the first disc, the lessons go into transportation, hotel, currency, and many other travel related words and phrases. Because you are also being taught some basics and conjugation of verbs at the same time, you really can't skip these sections and come back to them later, or you will miss some of the basics that will be built upon later. So...long story short, as someone who will not be travelling who wants to learn Spanish to help at work and getting along in society, it has frustrated me that I cannot use a lot of what I am learning so far. I can ask where the bus, train, train station, airport and taxi are. I can ask for a one way ticket, how to get a taxi from the airport, and how to get the train from Madrid to Paris, but I can't yet ask for 2 pounds of chicken at the local Mexican grocery store that I frequent.

So...you'll need to be patient. I do like that they alternate a man and woman doing the English and Spanish and then vice versa on the next lesson. This exposes you to different pronunciations and voices and keeps the boredom at bay.

I do recommend this set as a starter, but I will also be buying another to see if I can find something better.

I've taken 2 yrs of high school Spanish so this was a great refresher.
It has been about 15yrs since I was in high school. If someone is trying to learn by JUST a cd set; it is pretty unrealistic. You should also be using books as a supplemental since most people learn by hearing and seeing. I am happy with this cd set though because it is very much like listening to a teacher in class and for very little cost.

After being told that I was going 'south of the border' in just two weeks for business, my attention turned to the fastest way to learn Spanish, which I knew nothing of.
I used everything from cheap and small 'cheat sheet' style books like
1001 Most Useful Spanish Words. These helped.
I also used a great verb reference by a guy named Kendris entitled
'501 Spanish Verbs'.
I bombed with a cours called 'Spanish for Dummies' where the dummy was me for buying the course.
Learn in Your Car seemed like a natural for me, since I am constantly in my car. The problem is that the course didn't really teach me to 'communicate' in Spanish. It did help me somewhat though, thus the three star rating.
The two best courses I used and still use are 'Behind the Wheel Spanish CDs' and 'Converational Spanish in Nothing Flat', both by Language Dynamics. These guys really teach to how to speak and undertand Spanish fast an I learned enough in two weeks to communicate.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour

This book covers very basic information about tuning. There is no actual tuning information. It's just a glossed over description of how engines work and minimal information on performance tuning. The cover states "This is the first complete guide to electronic performance tuning of Ford vehicles". BS.....this is not a guide to tuning. There is a section covering Diablo tuners and how they work. Hmmmmm, wonder if this section was included because the author has an interest in the company? There is a section on cooking the author's favorite recipes...WTF!!! If I wanted a cook book, I would have bought one. I want my money back.........not worth the price!

I read the entire book in an hour. Lots of pictures and other filler. There was virtually no information on tuning. The book was mostly just a product brochure for diablo's products and how they work. If you want to know how their products work then this book would be fine for that. I found tons more useful information on actual tuning for free on www.fordfuelinjection.com. As a an example the book would say, "the tuner modifies the fuel table to achieve maximum performance". Well no duh! I was hoping to see a bit more detail than that.

Since I own a company that manufactures tuning hardware and software, I was curious to what this book was about.
After reading it, it does alot to help the reader understand what is involved in tuning the Ford PCM. It is not a "How-To" book but more of an in-depth guide on the process of tuning.
The book is full of colorful diagrams and picture that take the reader through each step in the tuning process. How the Ford EEC works, how chips work, how OBD-II scantools work and how the whole process is put together to tune a vehicle. The writing style is not dry like a technical manual, but well written and rather humorous at times.
I personally use the OBD-II code list in the book on a regular basis. The recipe section at the end is something unique.
If you want to know how the chip companies develop thier products, then this book is for you.

THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.......2003-06-25

I purchased this book last summer and was extremely disappointed.

From memory, here's a summary of what the book contains:

1) how engines work (2 pages or so). This is 101 material.
2) how processors work
3) how OBDII works, including signal processing (useless info for tuners)
3) anecdotal info on the Diablo chip, bordering on a sales pitch.
4) anecdotal info on Dario Orlando/Steeda.
5) lots of useless colorful pictures (PADDING) -- e.g. Dario sitting in his car tuning it (This really helps me tune mine).
6) lots of big print.
7) lots of margin space.
8) narrow columns of text.
9) a bunch of blank pages in the back for notes. PADDING.
10) a cooking (yes, COOKING) chapter on some stupid favorite recipe of the author.
11) OBDII scan codes. PADDING.

The author clearly was told to fill [n] pages so they could hardbound the thing and charge $... It reminded me of grade school when I was told to write an [n] page essay on [subject x]: Using the usual tricks, I wrote long winded sentences with no contractions, double spaced lines, and big margins. The only difference between my essays and this book is the price.

I was so mad after skimming this book that I threw it away the day I got it. I bought the book because I just purchased an EEC-Tuner and was interested in learning more about the subject. Even with my very limited knowledge on the subject, I was underwhelmed with the info presented in the book.

Don't waste your money like I did. Even thinking about this book is making me angry.

how the magic works.......2003-05-23

I am an ASE Master auto technician. 25 years of factory and aftermarket training left me with no information on the magic inside the engine control module. Now I know how the magic works. Any tuner modifing a Ford engine needs this book.

Cool, but a little bit extreme..........2006-05-24

If you like custom painting, you'll find several -other- nice books about the theme. This is not the only I've got about car painting and custom painting, but in fact, is not the one I like the most...

Even if it contains nice step-by-step procedures, and goes with most of the painting proceses you may want to know, is not a great font of inspiration -for me-. It is most like a airbrushing book, that goes even in painting things that I would never paint on cars... and really hate to see on cars...

Craig Fraser is surely a very good airbrush painter, but if you are looking for some custom painting, without getting your car out of mind, I'd suggest rather to buy "how to paint flames" or "pinstripping masters"... maybe also "advanced custom painting technics", but not this book.

All in all, it is not a bad book, is just not the kind of information I like to have on my library.

A very good book!.......2004-02-10

I've never airbrushed before I got this book, but I feel like I have a head-start after reading it. It explains things very well, like the may types of automotive paint, and demonstrates the use of stencils and freehand sheilds. He even has a computer that he can make designs with! I always thought everything was done freehand. He also explains and demonstrates how to highlight and very effective use of shading and shadows. He even shows how to do a carbon fiber effect. Very cool! I highly recommend this book. Thanks!

Cheap Tricks for Cheap!!!.......2001-08-04

This is one of the best books of it's kind! I absolutely love this book! I've been a fan of Craig Fraser and Jon Kosmoski for years, and they(mostly Craig) have done a wonderful job compiling information and demonstrating various techniques in the field of automotive airbrushing. Though focused mainly on the automotive genre, these techniques can be used in any field of airbrushing!! Craig is one of a kind, and he has been a tremendous mentor to many, and a terrific teacher to "airheads" everywhere. For the price of the book, you will get priceless information! It's well written, informative, and loaded with the coolest tips and tricks!!!

Excellent overview of electric cars.......2007-01-23

The Electric Car gives an excellent overview of electric cars. And as promised by the subtitle, Westbrook discusses the development and future of battery, hybrid and fuel-cell cars. All in all, this book is the best I have found on this important subject. I recommend it highly.

As interest increases in electric cars, particularly hybrids, books on the subject increase as well. Some are interesting and helpful. A surprisingly large amount are not. Few, if any, match the depth and breadth of the information and opinion in The Electric Car.

Westbrook spent his career working with electric cars. That shows in the book's detailed information and patient discussion. This is a book by an industry insider, who knows what he is talking about. What he does not know, he finds out, through contacts in the industry that he keeps active.

Westbrook does tend a little toward the pedantic. And he loves a long and complex sentence. No fluffy reading here. In fact, the book can be hard to get through if you are tired and not at the best of your game.

Nonetheless, if you have strong interest in electric cars, in my opinion you need this book.

Good introductory book.......2004-06-04

This book provides an accurate history of electric and hybrid cars, however it may be a bit lacking in terms of charting the future of electric cars and their power sources. All in all a solid buy for a intoduction to electric car technology.
