A really fine layman's guide to several prominent mental illnesses where specific films accurately portray manifestations of and reactions to those illnesses. It is now much more enjoyable to watch those films again with a better understanding of what the characters are attempting to portray. Highly recommended to any movie viewer who would like to know more about specific mental illnesses, but aren't able to attend psychiatric Grand Rounds as a physician.
Fascinating Movie Book.......2005-11-28
You may think Movies and Mental Illness is a book intended strictly for the mental health professionals and/or educators. Although I do not fall in either of these categories, I was enlightened by the wealth of knowledge offered by this book.
I felt the authors did a remarkable job educating us on mental disorders, the misconceptions associated with them, and the powerful effect film has on public perception of those with mental disorders.
Each chapter discusses a psychological disorder and includes several well-known films that portray each one. The authors showed us a fabricated case history of a lead character in the film with a particular disorder. Also included is the patient's psychological history, behavioral observations, diagnosis, treatment plan, and the prognosis. I found the tables and charts that were included throughout the book to be very helpful and user-friendly.
This book is a useful resource for everyone.

What I liked most about this book is that it covers recent movies, like 'Good Will Hunting' or '12 Monkeys', which are my favorites. The stories of the reflected images and their changes throughout the film history of the psychiatrists who appeared in the movies were also interesting.

This unique volume collects a series of essays that link new developments in Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and recent trends in contemporary cinema.
Though Lacanian theory has long had a privileged place in the analysis of film, film theory has tended to ignore some of Lacan's most important ideas. As a result, Lacanian film theory has never properly integrated the disruptive and troubling aspects of the filmic experience that result from the encounter with the Real that this experience makes possible. Many contemporary theorists emphasize the importance of the encounter with the Real in Lacan's thought, but rarely in discussions of film. By bringing the encounter with the Real into the dialogue of film theory, the contributors to this volume present a new version of Lacan to the world of film studies. These essays bring this rediscovered Lacan to bear on contemporary cinema through analysis of a wide variety of films including Memento, Eyes Wide Shut, Breaking the Waves, and Fight Club. The films discussed here demand a turn to Lacanian theory because they emphasize the disruptive role of the Real and of jouissance in the experience of the human subject. There are a growing number of films in contemporary cinema that speak to film's power to challenge and disturb the complacency of spectators, and the essays in Lacan and Contemporary Film analyze some of these films and bring their power to light. Many counselors and therapists may informally make use of movies to help people explore important psychological issues. "The Motion Picture Prescription" lists "200 Movies to Help You Heal Life's Problems", as the subtitle puts it, with brief synopses of the films, short lists of "healing themes" in them, and comments about the key story elements.
For example, Solomon writes about "Rain Man" (with Dustin Hoffman as the autistic savant brother to Tom Cruise, unknown to him for decades): "Some families keep secrets that eventually come to light, leaving those who are still alive to deal with the legacy of the family lies. There's no room for secrets in a loving relationship... Can you see Charlie [Cruise] was taking his anger out on Raymond [Hoffman] when he was really feeling hurt and sad over his father's abandoning him?"
Also included is a chapter with specific, usually common-sense suggestions, and an index of the 200 films in various theme categories.
Gaining Insight About Life at the Movies.......2000-11-23
Reading this book helped me see into an issue that perplexed me in life: why helping others could be my way of using others to meet my own needs. By watching When A Man Loves a Woman, I could see how a 'fixer' needs someone to fix to feel 'good,' even if that means wanting/needing someone else to stay broken.
It was a painful truth I could not see about myself when it was explained to me, but one I could see clearly by watching this film and using the cues offered in this wonderful book.
Of the many valuable insights I gained about myself from this book, one other stands out. I'd spent a lifetime listening to ernest friends explaining why my esoteric, off the wall humor was 'off-putting' to people who didn't know me. Watching a film with a character who sat in the background making esoteric, off the wall comments, I finally understood in a deep, clear, embarassing way what my friends had been trying to tell me: I was unintentionally coming across as strange and
disconnected to others.
I believe this book does a great service by bringing therapeutic insights and healing to people who cannot afford therapy. In my case, it also offered a way for me to learn about myself in a quiet way, without feeling a need to defend, explain or justify myself: I was just watching a movie.
As a character comments in When A Man Loves a Woman, 'Denial's not just a river in Egypt.' With the help of this book, I could see truths I'd denied about myself.
I recommend this book heartily to others struggling with life issues.
Self-Help on the Hurry Up.......1998-10-02
I was skeptical when I read the book but when I put the author's suggestions into practice I found it to be a great experience. As an added bonus I got to enjoy some movies that I never would have watched otherwise. The key is to follow the author's suggestions about how to use the movies in one's healing process and not just watch the movie(s). I highly recommend the book particularly for those who want to explore relationship issues.
A very resourceful tool for the journey of life........1998-06-28
This book helped me to understand the complexities of several of my own struggles. I was able to look up a movie with a similiar theme or situation and use it to see the my situation as an observer.
Can movies be used to "Heal?".......1998-06-09
I encountered this gem as a wannabe text book in 1998.
The author makes a big deal out of using movies as a self help device. The problem I have with this book how the author judges the movies he presents. Get a copy and read "Solomon's" description of your favorite movie. It as if he stretches his views and theory's around a movie that just are not there. A case in point is The Great Santini / The Gift of Fury (1979). A coming of age movie with a dedicated Marine Pilot as the father. Gary Solomon treats this movie as Child Abuse. Gary misses the point completely. Once you begin to actually look at the movies he recommends his Prescription falls flat on its face! It is the same self help mumbo jumbo for a buck that hits the book stores every day. I would go so far as to say this is a Toxic book. Toxic in the same way as using aspirin to grow hair on your head.
If a college instructor hands this book to you hand it back and drop the class.

This is a great tool for therapy with individuals, groups, families, or to expand your own thinking when watching videos. I have used this book with clients of all ages and in parenting classes. Almost all my clients gained insight and were able to view their own issues more rationally after watching the suggested films. The Setting The Scene and Scripting For Therapy sections are particularly useful if you do not have a chance to view the film prior to recommending it. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel.
Perceptive ways to use films for insight and growth.......1998-04-27
Although intended for therapists, this insightful book about using movies to illuminate our own experiences, motives, and choices is very worthwhile for families. The descriptions of movies like "Field of Dreams," "Breaking Away," and "Dead Poet's Society" provide us with thoughtful and perceptive ways to apply what we see to our own lives. The stories of the patients who were able to understand, identify, and change old patterns after seeing them reflected in the films are exceptionally well presented, and the suggestions for aproaches to using the films are sensitive and illuminating. Any parent will benefit from reading this book to gain a better way of thinking about what we show our children and how we can use what we do show them to improve family understanding and communication.

This is a book of essays regarding film as interpreted through Jungian theory. the first among my favorites is--
a classic article by John Beebe regarding the anima in films--he also discussed in this article how he uses film to assist analysts to improve their understanding of object relations.
Mary Dougherty's brilliant article (I paraphrase one of her sentences in the title of this review) discusses gendered dynamics and film as a force conditioning womens lives, bringing a womans developmental perspective on viewing film. She states that seeing powerful beautiful women such as Marilyn Monroe on the screen was part of her development of ego and gender identity. These experiences "privileged the power of being a desirable woman over the power of acting on my own desires."
There is also a nice attempt by Lennihen to interpet the movie Pulp Fiction according to the principles of alchemy. There are other really good articles--but then this review would be too long!!
