James Ellroy's L.A. Confidential is film-noir crime fiction akin to Chinatown, Hollywood Babylon, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and Jim Thompson. It's about three tortured souls in the 1950s L.A.P.D.: Ed Exley, the clean-cut cop who lives shivering in the shadow of his dad, a legendary cop in the same department; Jack Vincennes, a cop who advises a Police Squad- like TV show and busts movie stars for payoffs from sleazy Hush-Hush magazine; and Bud White, a detective haunted by the sight of his dad murdering his mom.
Ellroy himself was traumatized as a boy by his party-animal mother's murder. (See his memoir My Dark Places for the whole sordid story.) So it is clear that Bud is partly autobiographical. But Exley, whose shiny reputation conceals a dark secret, and Vincennes, who goes showbiz with a vengeance, reflect parts of Ellroy, too.
L.A. Confidential holds enough plots for two or three books: the cops chase stolen gangland heroin through a landscape littered with not-always-innocent corpses while succumbing to sexy sirens who have been surgically resculpted to resemble movie stars; a vile developer--based (unfairly) on Walt Disney-- schemes to make big bucks off Moochie Mouse; and the cops compete with the crooks to see who can be more corrupt and violent. Ellroy's hardboiled prose is so compressed that some of his rat-a-tat paragraphs are hard to follow. You have to read with attention as intense as hisand that is very intense indeed. But he richly rewards the effort. He may not be as deep and literary as Chandler, but he belongs on the same top-level shelf.

One of Ellroy's Masterpieces.......2007-09-12
This is the masterpiece of the L.A. Quartet series. By this point Ellroy had mastered his 'new' staccato cum John Dos Passos panorama style and he had established the foundation for his vision of a nasty slice of American history--the work of behind-the-scenes men motivated by raw need and raw pain. The plot is sprawling but, ultimately, tight as a toad's posterior, and the novel's epigraph (a glory that costs everything and means nothing) ripples across the pages like a blood-red tide. This is an absolute don't miss. Fans of the film will find some significant differences here, but they will not be disappointed.
Everything you could ask for in a novel.......2007-02-10
Lies, murder, mayhem, deceit, plot twists. Ellroy weavers all of this together and spins a fantastic yarn. Ellroy takes us into the world of several characters and gives an in-depth look at all them. Seldom have I come across a novel that can juggle so many plotlines and layers and still make a satisfying conclusion. To those who have only seen the movie: pick this book up. You will get a closer look at the big three(White,Vincennes,Exley)and what motivates them. I can assure you, having the novel will not spoil your love of what I believe (sorry Forrest Gump and Unforgiven) to be the best movie of the 90's. Enjoy!
If you like the movie, you'll love the book.......2006-05-19
As intricately layered and briskly paced as the movie adaptation, the original source novel is an excellent entry in the crime noir genre. Sleazy, smoky, and seductive, this is the infamous Los Angeles of the mid-twentieth century, filled with political corruption, Hollywood scandal, and unchecked crime syndicates. The novel explores deeply the motivations and fears of LAPD police officers Bud White, Jack Vincennes, and Edmund Exley as they investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the Nite Owl massacre. The seemingly straightforward murder case begins to unravel, enveloping the three protagonists with the demons of past and present. Prepare to be surprised at every turn of the page. This is an especially nice treat for fans of the movie.
I found James Ellroy's, "L.A. Confidential," very fragmented writing........2006-01-28
I am a very enthusiastic reader of crime novels pertaining to the forties such as with writers like Raymond chandler, who to me is one of the great crime writer's of the 20th Century.
I found James Ellroy's, "L.A. Confidential," very fragmented writing. Even though the story is set in the 1950's, I found the Characters and story plot in places was very hard to follower. Which made it very hard to keep track of the story and the flow of the story as a whole.
Like many people I am sure, who purchased this novel after seeing the highly acclaimed movie by the same title; that was supposedly based on this novel. Myself, I was hoping the novel answered questions and gave a large scope of the plot, yes it enlarged the characters; but the story tended to fall by the way side in regards to a clear view of what the story was all about. Take it from me; much from the movie vaguely resembles the novel. So, in this regards do not be disappointed if you pick up the book and expect the movie it is not really there.
The movie was fast paced and to me well done. The novel on the other hand is another story.
Thanks for the push........2005-06-06
I don't even know how to begin this review so I'm just going to wing it. I'm basically blown away and all's I can ask myself is how in the world does anyone come up with this story, which is several stories all wrapped within eachother. I had read 'Dahlia' which I loved, then 'Nowhere' which impressed me even more. Now 'Confidential' has left me in deep thought about the characters and the art of Mr. Ellroy's storytelling. I saw the movie several times before reading this (or any of Ellroy's work) and loved it. But the movie and the book are very different. If you're considering reading this book but saw the movie and figure you know the story already, you don't, so read it. If you've heard that it's essential to read his quartet in order (this being the third out of the four) but don't feel like reading the other two first, then don't, but read this book. If you're a do-gooder, born-again, living as a nun,,, well, you might not want to read this (only because you may feel dirty and immoral for liking it). But everybody else should get a copy because its THAT GOOD. Oh it's long, it's complex, it has more characters than the bible (which, by the way, should be read only after reading this as a priority first) and you'll need to pay close attention to everybody and everything, but it is most definitly worth it. "White Jazz' (the fourth and final) here I come. Thanks Mr. E!

Confidential?.......2007-04-10
Not any more. Joyner's titles always hype up things but then that's who he is. All the books he authors, or co-authors have good information in them but the basics have never changed - this information has always been out there in various forms. Granted, you'd have to assemble it yourself. So Joyner just packages it for you and makes a lot of money. After all business is business and if you can plug into everything the way Joyner does, why not? My hat's off to the sly Mr.Joyner who knows how to milk it for all its worth.
Provided concise statistics on what really works online.......2007-01-20
Mark Joyner has a long history in the internet business world, considered by some the father or grandfather of internet marketing, and has been attributed as the creator of the first ebook.
Here is a rare opportunity to learn from a real master and "outside the box" thinker, proven strategies that really work.
He he breaks some misconceptions and proves strategies through careful testing and statistical analysis to prove what really does and does not work in internet marketing.
As he shows these tested techniques it also provides a glimpse inside what made him so successful in the online world.
This is a must read for any serious online entrepreneur utilizing direct marketing method strategies
Pretty great book but.........2006-03-22
The book is really great in a lot of aspects. Specially because Mark tells the results of his intensive research online. But it's a highly advanced book. Should not be the first book a newbie reads.
Infact I found his sequel to this book, a lot better. I liked it more because there Mark explains his whole million-dollar business system - not just a few advanced tactics. I bought it but now it's free at www.secretsofthemilliondollarman.com.
Having said that, I think first read his Volume 2, then read this book. It will make a lot of sense practically.
By far the most powerful information about marketing.......2004-04-13
Mark Joyner's Confidential Internet Intelligence Manuscript reveals incredibly powerful information that anybody involved in online marketing should have - My sales increased 2000% after reading and applying the confidential information contained in this book.

"No hush, hush here.".......2001-03-01
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is one of the most riveting movies I have seen in years and was more than deserving of its Best Picture nomination (another one that bit the dust because of a sinking ship). The movie is really fast-paced and it is easy to miss things. Even after repeated viewings there are lines that you don't quite understand and clues here and there you don't pick up. After reading the screenplay, everything comes together and one can find the missing pieces in this murder mystery modern film noir. An excellent screenplay to compliment an superb movie.
The best movie of the decade!.......1998-11-29
L.A. Confidential, winner of 2 1997 Academy Awards, is a classic thriller that is completely unforgettable. The script includes characters who were portrayed by Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger, (in her oscar winning performance) and Danny Devito. They all live in Los Angeles and are involved in a conspiracy in which is a mystery of who killed who? Anyhow, there are several plots to the script involving cops, reporters, and even HOOKERS THAT LOOK LIKE MOVIE STARS (Kim Basinger) I give this Academy Award winning script a superb rating that should be recommended to numerous people across the country. It's an unforgettable suspense classic you don't want to miss!
Astounding.......1998-08-21
When I saw this movie, I was blown away. Now, being a kid, I didn't really get the full effect of the movie and didn't understand some of the plot, until, that is, I bought thi Screenplay. it made a lot of things clear. And also, it tells you the stage directions, which, if you want to use a piece from this a a monologue is a whole lot easier... A few complaints, though. There are some great lines in the movie that weren't included in the book and some extra ones that you don't see in the movie. For example, Captain Dudley is not Irish! Anyway, that only matters to nuts like myself. In closing, it's a great book and is worth it. I memorized the entire movie!
Exceptionally realistic.......1998-04-17
I was a Los Angeles Police Officer from 1956-62. The period of the book (film) was early 50's. The film portrays, with great accuracy, conditions and attitudes on the LAPD. The "Bloody Christmas" beating of two LAPD officers was accurately portrayed, down to the "almost" correct pronounciation of the name of the officer who received the most severe beating. The backdrop of LA, was exact. All in all, a terrific book and film.

On Speaking- The High Risk Proposition.......2004-06-15
Speaking is very likely the most important interpersonal skill behind integrity, or being true to one's words in deed and action. Mr. Genua's book, Managing Your Mouth, presents diverse examples of the same idea: how thoughtless use of the spoken word can put a person between the proverbial rock and a hard place.
Few of us understand, especially the young and un-initiated, that speaking is a high-risk proposition. One may wonder why that is so, and Dr. Robert Bolton, in his well researched book, People Skills, provides a simple answer: when we speak, we have no way of knowing in advance how the other side will react to what we say. That is why Dr. Bolton strongly recommends learning to listen, and many institutions (but not nearly enough) strongly emphasize clear and direct communication, preferably in the simplest terms possible and with an economy of words.
Mr. Genua advances thing a few more steps, and asserts that when we speak to others, not only do we not know how they will react, but we also do not know for certain how our words will be interpreted, and in a business setting with proprietary knowledge at risk, exactly what information we are consciously or unconsciously transmitting when we speak. Not only do our words communicate, but our posture, facial expressions and other body language can send unconscious signals, which to the trained observer can turn into important and useful information.
In seven quick and easy chapters, the author explains the importance of paying close attention to one's verbal and non-verbal communication, how to avoid certain destructive forms of verbal communication, and finally how to use verbal and non-verbal cues to maximum effect (as opposed to having them used against you to maximum effect), especially in business settings.
After using the preface and first chapter to lay out the reasons for paying close attention to what one says, the author gets to business in the second chapter by engaging the reader with an assessment of his or her current verbal management skills followed by a brief, detailed no-nonsense explanation of each assessment point. The third chapter assists the reader in identifying potential problems about himself or herself so that problematic speaking forms can be avoided, and also shows via vivid examples what can (and does) happen to those who utilize problematic speaking forms. Chapter four covers a variety of instances where unguarded verbal communication can lead to personal ruin, and devotes a considerable amount of space to successful navigating the job interview. The chapter concludes with a discourse on surviving and thriving in company meetings.
Chapter five elaborates on gossip, outlining in detail how bad it is and basically telling the reader to avoid it in all of its forms, such as the grapevine and the water cooler, like the plague. Chapter six explains the importance of not divulging secret or proprietary information, and reminds the reader to be on guard at all times and to use silence as a weapon. The last chapter (of bankruptcy fame) details the ins and outs of secrecy, and the effective use of deception.
My only criticism of this text is its failure to tell the reader to think carefully before he or she speaks. Most of us have to really train ourselves to do this, and work hard at resisting the urge to respond, either to demonstrate our intelligence or to counter a verbal attack (I have found that in many cases one demonstrates his or her intelligence by not speaking or responding to attacks). Most problems result because people fail to consider how their words will be received, and what exactly it is they wish to say. Merely reading about the pitfalls of speaking is one thing, but putting the author's advice to practice is quite another. All readers of this book should keep in mind that when we engage in verbal, we often pass through potentially stormy and treacherous waters.
Manage your mouth but skip this book.......2002-12-09
The concept and potential of this book is great. However, the title seems to say it all - in other words, manage what comes out of your mouth, because it can affect your success. Beyond that, save your money. I hesitate to write negative reviews because I ask myself - why would I do that, they didn't do anything to me?! But actually, I bought this book based on the 5 star reviews and it was a let down. Again, the author should be commended for the concept and for meaning well on such an important topic. I just didn't really feel like it helped me manage my mouth better, which is the point of my review. I have books you couldn't pry out of my hands (like "Keeping your cool under pressure") but I would gladly give up Managing Your Mouth for one dollar of my money back.
Managing Your Mouth.......2001-11-21
A great book on managing one of our best assets! As a manager, I found the book beneficial as it addresses the ramifications of poor communication. It addresses using body language combined with speech and/or silence. Considering "words and movement are the basis of communication" between co-workers, this book is essential in reminding all of us the joys of having and working with individuals who have "a better managed mouth".
A must read for developing superior interpersonal skills........1999-09-30
This is a "one of a kind book" that deals with one of the most important aspects of one's personal development. Most people get in trouble because they say things that offend others. This book is a tremendous help in off-setting that tendency. It will help readers, in both, on the job performance and in their personal lives.
Book Description

Rescued!.......2007-04-27
I came upon Melinda Robert's wonderful and whimsical book during one of those dark moments all of us mothers have. Both in her book and in her blog, the author gently reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously. I have given her book as a gift to so many mom friends. I promise this "memoir of sorts" (don't you love that sub subtitle?!) will lighten your days. Happy reading!
Every Mommy's Best Girlfriend.......2007-03-16
Reading Melinda Roberts' new book, Mommy Confidential: Adventures of the Wonderbelly of Motherhood, is like spending an evening with your best girlfriends. I'm probably one of the few people (in the universe) who has not read her blog, but I'm so glad I ordered this book. It is fun, it is invigorating, and it is packed with brutal honesty.
What's so unique about Roberts' book is that many of the events she records are written about within minutes of them happening -- so we get to experience the ups and downs of life with small children as she does. Her nearly daily entries reveal the truly tender, life-altering, and heartbreaking moments of motherhood in a way that no other book on the subject does.
And Roberts is not just funny ha-ha. She is I-can't-breathe-I'm-laughing-so-hard funny. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she either turns this book into a stand-up comedy routine and takes it on the road, or that she comes out with a sequel. Regardless, I'll be keeping up with her future adventures on her blog.
Warm, witty & tugs at your heart.......2007-02-10
When I was first starting my own blog, I stumbled across the wonderful world of Mommy Bloggers. It was like this wonderful block party. Only it was on the Internet. So I emailed many of these bloggers, asking, shyly, if I could be invited to the party. So many of them responded with a hearty, "Yes, and bring the cocktails." And one of the first ones to welcome me with open arms was Melinda Roberts, proprietor of The Mommy Blog.
Melinda has a loyal, snarky following, which goes with her slightly snarky blog about her life, her kids, her ex, her gourmet-cooking boyfriend. But her blog is also warm and poignant, too, as it started as a way for her to make sense of her son's life-threatening illness early in her life. Thankfully, that son is now a healthy child who drives her somewhat crazy -- as all healthy children should do to their mothers. But the blog, thankfully, has blossomed and grown. In fact, I'm happy to say that it's blossomed and grown into a real live BOOK.
MOMMY CONFIDENTIAL: Adventures From the Wonderbelly of Motherhood, is that book. It's just as warm, witty and yes, wonderfully snarky, as her blog. I can't imagine having gone through what she has while still retaining my sense of humor. But she certainly has, and I recommend her book to everyone looking for a laugh, a cry, a warm fuzzy feeling - and an excuse to go gross out your children by smothering them with sloppy hugs and kisses.
So go read Mindy's blog, and buy her book. You'll be glad you did.
Review submitted by Christine Louise Hohlbaum:.......2006-11-06
Mommy Confidential: Adventures from the Wonderbelly of Motherhood by Melinda Roberts is a witty, heart-breaking, and real-life chronicle of a young divorced mother of three in Silicon Valley. Her fast-crack wit will give you a benevolent case of whiplash as she moves through her days of chaos, calamity, and cuddling with her kids. Her irreverant and unapologetic take on motherhood is refreshing, making it stand out from other, perhaps more polished diatribes on contemporary parenting. The rough and tumble of raising boys is also evident, yet there is always an undercurrent of unshakeable love for the tykes who call Mindy "Mom". The reader accompanies the author's journey over several years: from daughter Daisy's first steps to her trying to save her brother from 'certain death' on the floor. High drama and deep belly laughs are guaranteed from this first-time author. I look forward to reading the sequel!
Christine Louise Hohlbaum, author of DIARY OF A MOTHER and SAHM I AM: TALES OF A STAY-AT-HOME MOM IN EUROPE, lives near Munich, Germany, with her husband and two children.
Book Description
L.A. Confidential was released in 1997 to huge critical acclaim. It went on to be nominated for nine Academy Awards and is now considered a key Hollywood movie of the 1990s. But having neither big-name stars nor a comforting moral universe, it fared poorly at the box office. At a time when audiences would soon be flocking to Titanic, this film harked back to an older, darker Hollywood.
Directed by Curtis Hanson from the best-selling novel by James Ellroy, L.A. Confidential stars Kim Basinger, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito and two then relative unknowns, New Zealander Russell Crowe and Australian Guy Pearce. Manohla Dargis explores the careers of Hanson and Ellroy, based on interviews with both men, to dig deep into the film's obsession with the twinned, equally troubled histories of the Hollywood studio system and the city of Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful book vs. movie commentary.......2003-09-27
Dargis obviously likes the original novel at least as much as the film. Great analysis of the period, the style, and the content of both the film and the book. You don't have to have read the original James Ellroy book to get your time and money's worth out of this Dargis commentary.
Of the 6 or so BFI film books I have read so far, this one by far is the most interesting one yet.

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL-Ken and Lisa-SPOILERS.......2002-10-15

lisa comes back to ken for good.
julie kenner does it again - another 5 stars.......2001-11-26
Julie Kenner is a great writer - I have enjoyed all of her books so far. This is no exception.... I loved the characters. I am hoping that maybe she writes a book about the chef Tim so that we can see how Lisa and Ken are doing...
Hot! Very highly recommended.......2001-11-13
Ken Harper's talent and ambition matched Lisa Neal perfectly, making him irresistible. Unfortunately, it was her own ambition that cost LIsa the sexy restaurateur, leading her to New York for the opportunity of a lifetime. She'd worked her tail off for years for an opportunity to become a player in the Hollywood scene, and when one of the country's hottest independent producers offers her a job, she immediately leaves LA and Ken behind. Too bad the hot producer found more satisfaction in snorting the drugs investor's money could buy than he did in making movies. And too bad Lisa's name was linked in the scandal. Now she's returning to the City of Angels with a promise of return to the world of film if she can convince Ken to help.
Ken's restaurant Oxygen continues to succeed. Not bad for a college drop-out from Blanco, Texas. His semi-celebrity status doesn't please him, but can't be avoided, even when it brings women like Alicia Duncan. Alicia wants an interview with Ken at Oxygen and will do anything to get it. Ken refuses to diminish the mystique of the restaurant with testimonials, personal appearances, or commercials. So when Lisa returns to town and convinces Ken to let her use Oxygen for a film site, Alicia wants to know why.
Every year Oxygen's anniversary reminds Ken of the loss of the love of his life. At the restaurant's opening he had an engagement ring in his pocket, believing Lisa felt the same way he did. Instead, she was gone to New York two days later with another man. "Hit-and-run dating", as his best friend calls it, wasn't making him happy. Maybe if he helps her, Ken can finally get on with his life. So he agrees to let Lisa use Oxygen, for a price. Ken had been waiting to marry Lisa before he made love to her. Now he wants Lisa not just for sex but decadence, "A wild time the likes of which we never got to have before." But the question remains if a night of sin and sex will be enough to satisfy them both.
Author Julie Kenner once again delivers a romance that turns up the heat! With the ambiance of Los Angeles for her background, LA CONFIDENTIAL is a sexy, dazzling romp. The single-mindedness of the heroine's decision to pursue her career goals never threats the hero's success, nor does she back away from her goals for love. Indeed, this reviewer is very impressed with the successful conclusion that never comprises the strength of these wonderful characters. In addition, Ken's best friend who happens to tend bar at Oxygen is a hoot! His knowledge of women's magazines gives the novel a touch of verve that is irresistible. LA CONFIDENTIAL has been added to the keeper shelf. Very highly recommended.

Book Description
In the tradition of Raymond Chandler's crime fiction comes this story of three tortured souls in the 1950s LAPD: a clean-cut cop who lives shivering in the shadow of his dad, his colleague who busts movie stars for payoffs from a sleazy magazine; and a detective haunted by the sight of his mother's murder. Intensity mounts as the novel's various plots intertwine more and more tightly, yet the narrative never veers too far from its core theme of cops competing with crooks to see who can be more corrupt and violent.

It provides an in depth insight to security problems, presents checklists and forms to perform analysis of potential risks, and affords practical methods to forecast and minimize loss. Realistic Security for Business.......2005-05-19
This is an excellent book which addresses a number of issues that are present in any modern business. In an increasingly dynamic business environment where mergers, demergers and acquisitions are some of the ways in which corporations adapt to a changing environment, an understanding of the security implications and potential problems that will be encountered is essential. Any failure to understand how to protect information during the period leading up to an acquisition could be, at the very least, expensive, or in the worst case disasterous. Once an acquisition has been made, how do you integrate the security of two separate organisations in a way that causes the least impact and disruption to the business? This book has examined these issues and provides good, pragmatic advice on how to achieve this. The authors clearly have a great deal of experience in the area and the way that the book is written clearly comes from their practical knowledge in the area. This is a must have book for the security staff in any commercial organisation.
