Book Description

Jason Steadman is a thirty-year-old sales executive living in Boston and working for an electronics giant, a competitor to Sony and Panasonic. He's a witty, charismatic guy who's well liked at the office, but he lacks the "killer instinct" necessary to move up the corporate ladder. To the chagrin of his ambitious wife, it looks as if his career has hit a ceiling. Jasons been sidelined. But all that will change one evening when Jason meets Kurt Semko, a former Special Forces officer just back from Iraq. Looking for a decent pitcher for the company softball team, Jason gets Kurt, who was once drafted by the majors, a job in Corporate Security. Soon, good things start to happen for Jason -- and bad things start to happen to Jasons rivals. His career suddenly takes off. He's an overnight success. Only too late does Jason discover that his friend Kurt has been secretly paving his path to the top by the most "efficient" -- and ruthless -- means available. After all, Kurt says, "Business is war, right?" But when Jason tries to put a stop to it, he finds that his new best friend has become the most dangerous enemy imaginable. And now it's far more than just his career that lies in the balance. A riveting tale of ambition, intrigue, and the price of success, Killer Instinct is Joseph Finder at his best.

3 out of 5 stars How is that most of you can give this book a 5 star rating?.......2007-09-19

In my opinion, 5 star rating should be given if the book is written so well that there cannot be any improvement to the story. Don't get me wrong. I think Joseph Finder is an excellent writer and I enjoy his books. I read this book in 3 days and it was entertaining... but 5 stars? Come on people... How is that the ex-special forces villain who can crack open encrypted e-mails and obtain classified information cannot hide his history to get a job? I guess for those who gave this book a 5 star rating, it makes perfect sense.

This book is good for killing time when you are flying somewhere or tanning yourself on some tropical beach. It's not worth the hardcover. Get a paperback or better yet borrow it from your local library.

4 out of 5 stars Killer Plot.......2007-08-22

Jason Steadman, easy-going, go-with-the-flow type of guy and good provider to his wife Kate, is the primary figure in this book. Kate, Jason's wife, is encouraging him to climb the corporate ladder, instilling in him the need to push forward - derive more of a "killer instinct" to make it big in the Entronics Corporation as a knock-out salesman. Jason is satisfied to do his job and let the others fight for the top of the corporate ladder. By a twist of fate, Jason meets up with Kurt Semko. Kurt happens to be the tow truck driver who comes to Jason's aid when his car goes off the road. The two begin talking to find out that Kurt was part of the Army Special Forces and a semi-professional baseball player - something the Entronics baseball team desperately needs to bring them out of their losing streak. Jason figures he could kill two birds with one stone by being the force behind getting Kurt a job in the company's corporate security division (given his military background) and adding a winning player to the baseball team. Jason begins to see many changes at work and at home and comes to discover Kurt may be at the root of them all. "Killer Instinct" is an excellent read that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout the story. What starts out as a good deed, turns into a dangerous game. Joseph Finder is an excellent author with a style that is sure to please the suspense-driven reader.

Maybe reading the book yourself is ok, but whatever you do - don't listen to this audio book.

5 out of 5 stars Booyah.......2007-08-10

All writers of fiction think " what if" to start a new idea toward a new novel. Mr. Finder certainly found his "what if" with this one. It ties the war in with the cutthroat business ways of the kid managers we have in business today and like salt or pepper being mixed in we insert a real Special Forces vet, except with a DD. The story raced me to the end and each page was great and suddenly I was done. Anyone that appreciates a real thriller will not want to miss this one. Booyah.

4 out of 5 stars Frightening, yet plausible, psychological thriller.......2007-08-02

With 'Killer Instinct' Finder has created a tense psychological thriller with a strong core of characters. Jason Steadman is an everyman with little hope of taking charge of his life & career until he meets Kurt Semko, a former Special Forces officer who recently received a dishonorable discharge.

After Steadman gets Semko a job, Semko provides Steadman with an abundance of advice, but also begins an unethical and ultimately deadly campaign to enhance Steadman's career. Although uncomfortable with the approach, Steadman initially welcomes the help and uses it to his advantage. However, Semko eventually crosses a line where Steadman can no longer live with what's going on around him.

The book may have warranted five stars, but once Steadman decides he's had enough, there is a little too much storyline devoted to Semko threatening anything and everything Steadman does.

Despite the minor criticism above, the story reaches a very satisfying conclusion that demonstrates Steadman was learning from Semko throughout the entire story.

Both primary characters were very well written and all of the minor characters come accross as real. A job well done by Finder.

Book Description

Fresh out of film school, aspiring producer Jane Hamsher and her partner Don Murphy stumbled onto a screenplay by a geeky filmmaker-wannabe named Quentin Tarantino. For $10,000, Jane and Don optioned Natural Born Killers and set off on a two-year roller coaster ride no classroom could have prepared them for. With an outrageous cast of real-life characters including Oliver Stone, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey, Jr., and Juliette Lewis--along with a slew of film-crew leeches and behind-the-scenes studio pitbulls--Killer Instinct rivals the most mesmerizing, gut-wrenching movie scenes. A wild joyride like no other, Hamsher's tale provides a fresh, insider's perspective on stardom and the real balance of power in Hollywood.

2 out of 5 stars ........2003-01-20

I give 'Killer Instinct' this much: it was a quick and entertaining read -- a fun ride. The type of book you tear right through in a night. However, I find it difficult to take seriously Jane Hamsher's account of events. I find it curious that every single woman in this book is portrayed as a sweet, strong-willed, honest-to-goodness saint, worthy of enormous sympathy -- (not least of all, Jane Hamsher herself!) -- while almost every single man (save for one writer friend of hers) is portrayed as, more or less, an utter demon (at times, almost literally.)* Even her "partner in crime," Don Murphy is shown, at times, in a critical light -- but never Iron-Willed Jane. She is the very picture of patience and professionalism, often beset upon, but rarely (if ever) in error. It's interesting that at several points, particularly on the production of NBK, it is implied that a lot of people on the set are losing patience with her and are irritated by her presence -- but unfortunately, we don't have their side of the story, and as far as Jane is concerned, it is (always!) all miraculously due to their inability to handle the fact that she's a woman. (!!!) Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt there's plenty of sexism in Hollywood, but Hamsher's account, with its suspiciously unfailing tendency to portray every single woman as a flawless, tough-hearted angel, leads me to believe that this is not just a one-sided account, but quite possibly entirely out-of-whack, the rays of truth refracted wildly through Hamsher's "feminist fairytale" vision of her own experiences.

Additionally, I find it interesting that while initially very smitten with Tarantino's ideas and scripts, that as their professional ties go south, he magically turns into a thoroughly talentless hack, milking stolen ideas for all they're worth. But then she remembers that NBK is her dream project, and it was, of course, scripted by him -- drats! Thinking fast, she asserts that by far the best part of the script -- the TV sitcom parody -- was the work of her writer friend, not Tarantino. Well, uh ... OK.

Particularly priceless, though, is her initial (and I think only) direct encounter with Lawrence Bender, Tarantino's producer. They meet at a party, he says hello and is perfectly friendly and polite to her, and that's pretty much the extent of her experiences with him. Given that, it's pretty amazing (and terribly questionable) exactly how much hostility she has towards him and how much dirt she shovels in his direction throughout the rest of the book. Upon meeting him, she feels "queasy," shakes, and has to immediately leave the room for some air when they part! Why? Because she feels intuitively that she has just been in the presence of -- I believe she uses the term "jackal" -- but given the incredibly over-the-top way she describes it, the impression is more that of a "demon."* And why does she feel that way? Well, it's not one of those things you can explain, see, but essentially, it seems to mainly have to do with the fact that his eyes have a distant look to them. (They "recede into an emotional abyss when he speaks" according to Hamsher.)

I've never met Lawrence Bender, and I have no trouble believing that Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone and the host of other male Hollywood stars and hopefuls that appear in Hamsher's tale have their fair share of shortcomings and ballooned egos. Maybe a few of them really are even bad, dishonest people, through and though. Maybe. What I find more difficult to believe is that Hamsher and her coterie of oppressed agents and starlets and mother-figures are half as immaculate as they seem in the version of events she gives us here.

I also question the motivation for writing this book. A fun ride through the Hollywood system, or just an excuse to trash-talk people who've gone on to have more successful careers than she? Looking through Hamsher's filmography, I notice her unfailing tendency to grab interesting projects and turn them into mediocre films with mediocre earnings. It seems unlikely that Hamsher would ever deign to admit to an emotion as base as jealousy, but one wonders all the same.

5 out of 5 stars Treated as a work of FICTION, it rates five stars, but..........2002-08-07

...if this book were rated on its believability, it would rate one star or lower. While there are no doubt some grains of truth to the incidents it describes, other parts of it are utterly insane. Either there is a heavy degree of fabrication and embellishment, or Oliver Stone and company are COMPLETELY FREAKIN' NUTS! My money is on the former simply because so much of it is unrealistic: towards the end of the book, Jane tells about how Quentin Tarantino hit on her in Italy, and includes a picture of his letter to her, written in childish scrawl and including ridiculous misspellings of common words. It looks like it was written by a five-year-old! Either Mr. Tarantino was taking drugs, or he is in serious need of psychiatric help! Also, Oliver Stone is portrayed as a philanderer and a drug addict. However, there are plenty of other accounts of the productions of his films. The kind of behavior attributed to Mr. Stone in this book would stick out like a sore thumb. Why none of those other accounts have revealed more than a shade of those characteristics of his personality is beyond me! In other words, I believe Jane's account is heavily exaggerated.

Anyway, I don't mean for this to be completely negative, because the book is truly funny--the ominous buildup to meeting Oliver Stone after Jane and Don hear that he is interested in the project, the funny captions on the pictures, the crew doing psychedelic mushrooms during location scout in the desert, the prison riot, the film festival in Italy, etc. (Don't read this book in a library. You will die trying to stifle your laughter.)

This book is worth buying... but take everything it says with a heaping bowl of salt.

Book Description

Neurologist Dr. Jonathan Pincus personally examined and probed into the family and medical history of numerous serial killers and other violent criminals to analyze what creates and triggers the violent instinct. He discovered that virtually all suffered severe abuse as children, as well as brain damage and mental illness. In these gripping, terrifying stories, Pincus concludes that violent criminal behavior is the catastrophic product of a dysfunctional brain coupled with an abusive environment. Focusing on these critical factors, how can we prevent the development of potentially violent persons from a young age before the damage becomes irrevocable? And how do we evaluate chances of rehabilitation?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clearly written and multidimensional.......2006-11-02

Emeritus chair of Georgetown University's Neurology Department, Pincus uses case studies to explore the interplay among biological, psychological and social forces in men who kill.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for fiction crime writers.......2006-09-04

Pincus weave a fascinating, true tale of what makes killers tick in this 2001 book. Pincus himself interviewed hundreds of killers during his career as a neurologist. He combines his knowledge of the human body and psyche to draw his own conclusion about why people kill. Whether or not you buy into his theory, Pincus offers a solid case in a well-written, slim book that is an excellent, quick reference for fiction crime writers.

5 out of 5 stars Early childhood ed. needs tax monies more than crime mop up........2002-09-21

I just finished "Base Instincts: What Makes Killers Kill" and I am adamant that our society shows so much more monetary respect for crime and punishment than early childhood education. We have had recent headlines about men, here in Austin, spiking babies and toddlers like footballs after a touchdown, in anger, killing or maiming them and ending up in prison for life. While this outrage is profoundly disturbing, professionals dither at whether or not early childcare intervention is ethical, cost effective or necessary in our society. Paying attention to parenting of the young child uplifts not just that family, but our societies future well being. Child abuse is the single most important determinant of future violence, and it is endemic and epidemic in our frontier based national mind set. We need to launch an all out campaign to raise the national consciousness about the importance of the nurturance of women, and the children that they in turn nurture, in the first three years of life, and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars "A Unified Concept/Hypothesis Why Murderers Murder".......2002-07-23

"Base Instincts: What Makes Killers Kill?" by Jonathan H. Pincus, MD, ISBN 0-393-32323-4 pbk, Norton & Co. 2001: a 225 page disquisition plus 13 pages of notes by a NYU Professor of neurology & psychiatry and graduate of Columbina CPS who investigated some 150 murderers over a 25-year period and tenders his unified theory that "killers kill for the same reasons," regardless of their classifications (single, mass, serial, & perhaps genocidal).

Pincus observed that killing arises in the milieu and troika of disturbances which generally discloses (1) childhood abuses (sexual, verbal, physical), (2) frontal lobe damage (birth trauma, chromosomal, genic, infectious, toxic as alcohol & drugs), and (3) a medley of mental (neuro-psychiatric) impairments e.g. bipolar depresssion, paranoia, ADHD, CD, ODD, etc. He hypothesizes that single, mass, and serial killings have similarities with the Nazi/Hitler's paranoid anti-Semitism, Gaza Strip atrocities and various terrorist factions of more recent vintage.

He opines the only feasible remedy would be prevention of child abuse and cites pilot studies underway, and also specifies factors impeding implementation of other remedies including treatment of convicted murderers. He details his basic neurologic testing format including specific tests directed at eliciting impairment of the frontal lobes, the latter being somnething he states most/many neurological examiners fail to do. Dr. Pincus has worked successfully on a number of defense cases aimed at getting death sentences switched to life without parole.

The treatise is not overly technical, the writing style is a bit wordy, and very minor detractions were noted (i.e. XYY in not a chromosomal deficit but a chromosomal excess or defect; Trisomy 21 is no longer referred to as mongolism but Down's syndrome; and this reader is skeptical that someone could & would drink a 12-pack of beer and a pint of whiskey in 45 minutes (one can every 3.75 minutes & not counting the hard liquor).

This study is an important contribution to the study of homicide and it provides engaging thought-provoking commentary on what makes murderers murder and also a workable solution to the problem of homocides. This book gives ample graphic grisly details of physical & sexual abuse, sans pictures, which some readers will find disturbing, but so then is murder. This is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Fine Effort.......2001-10-01

The point of this fairly slim volume is to convince the reader that many (perhaps the vast majority) of our most dangerous criminals have neurologic impairments, and that brain dysfunction, along with child abuse and paranoid thinking, is at the heart of much violent behavior. This is not an entirely new message, but it is one Pincus approaches with a great deal of authority -- he's a professor of Neurology at Georgetown, was formerly at Yale and has studied dozens of death row prisoners along with his colleague Dorothy Ortnow Lewis.

Dr. Pincus clearly decided not to risk alienating readers with scientific terminology or complex explanations of brain physiology. The book follows the familiar "casebook" true crime format used by various ex-FBI profilers, coroners, and cops. Most chapters focus on a particular criminal Pincus had dealings with (many of them in his role as an expert witness) and what that criminal's life story shows about the origins of homicidal violence.

The coversational writing style (and oddly cheery alliterative chapter titles) stand in contrast to the horrific nature of much of the material. The crime scene details will be familiar to any reasonably hardened reader in the literature. What really stood out for me was the descriptions of childhood abuse endured by many of the perpetrators Pincus has studied. As a former inner-city teacher, I taught kids from pretty screwed up homes, and had some friends from abusive families while growing up. But the stories Pincus recounts (corroborated by siblings and others) remind us that there is almost no downward limit to the depths of human depravity.

What's rather odd about all the better works in the study of violence and homicide is the sense that this field is under-funded, under-appreciated and obscure. Pincus and other pioneers in the field have answered some important questions, but their work raises hundreds more. If, say one percent of the money our government has spent trying to prove that marijuana is dangerous were instead spent on studying the roots of violence, perhaps we'd have more answers.

Book Description

GrimJack returns to the ever-shifting city of Cynosure, and creators John Ostrander and Timothy Truman reunite to tell the tale! There's a firefight in The Pit and GrimJack is in the middle of the conflagration. His friends at Cadre have hired a beautiful vampire assassin to take him out. How does GrimJack save his neck - and who winds up in possession of Munden's Bar, the nexus of all realities?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

The early scoop on Grimjack : how he got Munden's, among other things. Some more great work here. I had been waiting for this for a hell of a long time. Hard to believe that we actually have new Grimjack work. Vampire assassins, and all the other crazy and nasty stuff that happens in Cynosure is again to be seen here, thankfully!

5 out of 5 stars After thirteen years, it hits the ground running........2007-02-07

John Gaunt a.k.a."GrimJack" isn't a simple character to understand. He is as multidimensional as his home city, Cynosure. This tale goes a long way in explaining what went into his makeup. He was the greatest gladiator of the Pit. He fought with distinction during the Demon Wars as one of the legendary Demon Knights. He was a bounty hunter with the Law Killers. He served with the Transdimensional Police. He was Cadre's most efficient assassin.

Through all this he just obeyed orders. He was a weapon that others wielded- no questions asked. It was easier that way. It was easier because he could never forget that the one time he had made a major decision on his own a world, and a woman, had died... People assumed that he was a sociopathic killer without feelings. He wanted them to think that. Yet deep inside he felt it all, all the pain, for that is the price that we pay for human life. It was this that finally taught him that the ends do not justify the means- it merely corrupts them. It was then that John Gaunt resolved that by any god that existed, he would be his own man until he went down to his grave. That's really where the legend started, when he stopped serving the powers-that-be and became a b*stard on the side of the little guys that needed him.

While you don't really need to be familiar with the old series to appreciate this story (as Ostrander points out in his excellent intro) it does revisit and expand much of the old territory. It is completely faithful to the original and well worth the wait. I especially appreciated knowing just how he ended up owning Munden's bar. It is difficult for me to imagine how Ostrander, and co-creator Tim Truman, could have done a better job.

5 out of 5 stars Grimjack Year One.......2006-06-02

Great hardboiled action by Ostrander and Truman works his magic as usual. Fills in some of the blanks of Grimjack's backstory following the Dancer rebellion. A good intro to the series if you're new to Grimjack, or just a regular at Munden's Bar. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant return to some old stomping grounds.......2006-03-15

I really wanted to gush about how great and fantastic this was, and all that jazz.

But, I can't.

I can gush about how it was a great story, well done, though the art was a little too pretty at times - I preferred Truman's less polished stuff on the original series, years ago... but hey. The covers are phenomenal, and the majority of the interior art is balls-on. It's great, but...

The story is a prelude - it takes place before any of the other stories we've seen to date (except for flashback stories, of course.) This introduces John to us, takes him from being a TDP cop to a member of the Cadre, and even has his first ever visit to Munden's.

It's got most of the major characters, somewhere, somehow. It's an excellent story, and it's fun, and that's all that matters.

5 out of 5 stars WELCOME BACK JACK!!!!.......2006-01-08

GRIMJACK IS BACK! .......Well, folks just call him Grimjack, his name is Gaunt, John Gaunt (no...he's no relation to the "War of the Roses" ) Gaunt, is a hard-boiled detective / former police officer, soldier and gladiator who looks like a cross between a swashbuckling pirate and a futuristic private eye with a sword. Like the great pulp detectives Gaunt's adventures take place in HIS CITY, Cynosure, a city intersecting crossroads of several universes intersect, allowing for locales that blend elements of fantasy, science fiction and the detective stories. GrimJack is a gritty anti-hero, often prone to violence The comic features some adult scenes, language and violence. Creator John Ostrander has explained,
"Jack does have morality. He is not in there just to punish the bad guys. He has learned through a hard life that the only thing worth knowing is the truth, and he may kill to get to the truth." Originally the series began in 1983 as back-up stories in another comic book, "StarSlayer," published by First Comics soon getting its own comic, and was published until 13 years ago, never achieving mainstream comic appeal, but garnering a dedicated fan base First Comics folded and the rights have been in legal limbo until NOW! Not only are the trade paperbacks of the original run rapidly being published (in the LEDGEND OF GRIMJACK #1 and up...) but now with GRIMJACK: KILLER INSTINCT. Co-creator and artist TIM TRUMAN rejoins JOHN OSTRANDER for this welcome return.

Cindy Dees tells a tightly woven , well crafted action packed thriller that goes beyond the romance genre. Written in the style of a James Bond espionage story , mixed with romantic suspense our story begins with Amanda McClintock sneaking into her friend Marina's dressing room at Carnegie Hall and having a retired Russian agent take a cyanide pill rather than tell Amanda what he is hiding!Taylor Roberts is a clinical psychologist assigned more to watch out for Amanda than really take part in her case tracking down illegal diamond smuggling for arms. They travel all over the world from one exotic locale to another, dodging bad guys and bullets. Taylor learns how to be an agent and Amanda learns how to put her cold exterior aside and reveal the human being within. They fall in love and support each other while unravelling a complex mystery of high intrigue.
I really like this book- what the other BOmbshells have missed is the intensity of the relationship and the strong character and relationship development that Cindy Dees excels at with this book. I really cared about both characters and found myself thoroughly engaged from start to end.
The entity they work for Deveraux has been described as a group of good guys looking for vigilante justice with many agents working around the globe- I hope a series is to follow!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to delve into world of Jessica Coran.......2001-06-14

This was actually the 2nd book I had read by Robert W. Walker. The first one was the 2nd book in the series. I have to say that I love books based on forensics and serial killer being tracked. This book was good but would have been better if I had read it first. The characters are well defined especailly Jessica Coran. The Vampire Killer was a little hard to believe as well as the fact that the FBI in this book feel that bleeding to death is a level 9 on the torture factor. I have read far too many books to believe that there aren't more sadistic kinds of torture far above blood-letting. But it is an enjoyable read and gives a lot of insight into the reasons behind Dr. Jessica Coran for future books.

I've read all of Patricia Cornwell, and have just about OD'd on Ridley Pearson, and this was an Amazon suggestion. While it was a decent read, I found two major problems by page 37. First of all, what Medical Examiner would be out in the middle of nowhere conducing a scene investigation in a skirt and high heels? Sexist, if you ask me. Secondly, he paints the "small town medical examiner" as some sort of villain and says HE will embalm the victim. Having both funeral directors and medical examiners in my family, I know that no ME will embalm a body...and you do not need an MD for embalming. It was a decent read, but some of his descriptions and action scenes get a little drawn out. I found myself skimming some parts. I may try another Coran novel, but it won't be my first choice.

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't get into it...........1999-11-30

I read this book because I'm a big fan of the Kay Scarpetta novels and this was supposed to be along the same line. I found the characters to be boring and not well developed and the story too slow.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best I've ever read.......1999-08-28

I truly enjoyed this book. I love to read about serial killers and the FBI. Athough it was a great book I have to say that I have read a couple of books that were slitly better, such as most of the books by James Patterson. It did keep my interest up and kept me turning pages, Some of the relationships and characters could have been built up a little more. I do absulutly love the main character being a woman in what we call a "man's job." It was a great book.

5 out of 5 stars another scarpetta like character.......1998-09-05

a very good first book. if you like patricia cornwell you'll like robert walker. mr. walker also writes under the name of geoffrey caine.
