Book Description
If Chins Could Kill is a delightfully irreverent, yet oddly touching epic of ambition and disappointment, fame and anonymity, and lots of fake blood. Told in Bruces wry, sarcastic voice, it is a Hollywood from the bleacher seats look at his experiences in film and TV and at his status as a cult horror and sci-fi movie god. This man with the face of a matinee idol and the heart of a Stooge first attracted what has grown into an enormous cult following as the star of Sam Raimis legendary Evil Dead trilogy of thriller-comedies. With tireless good humor and biting wit, Bruce acted, produced, and directed his way through a bakers dozen of B horror films and space operas before finally enjoying mainstream stardom on prime-time TV. Deeply earnest and fiercely funny, this book tells the story of an unlikely star who continues to lead a unique double life as cult movie icon and regular Joe.

Just Plain Fun.......2007-09-16
Who doesn't love Bruce Campbell? You've seen him in the Evil Dead movies, in Hercules and Xena, in Jack of All Trades, in Spider-Man, in The Hudsucker Proxy, in Brisco Country Jr, in Bubba Hotep and, most recently, in USA's Burn Notice. No matter what he's in, you know it's going to be a good-old fashioned, fun, rip-roaring good time with a healthy dash of humor and slapstick. And for Campbell's fans, this book doesn't disappoint either.
If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is a fun autobiography - Campbell tells his story in simple, matter-of-fact terms without pulling any punches or overly philosophizing. He gives us what we want - humorous anecdoes and career highlights, as well as great behind-the-scenes tales. Granted, most of this book focuses on his early career and the making of/hoopla over Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. However, you'll also get insight into a number of other elements of his career, including the roles that got away (for instance - did you know he lost out to Billy Zane for the role of The Phantom?). This is also a quick read - I got through it in less than 24 hours. If you're looking for a fun read about one of our favorite actors, you can't go wrong with this one. Check it out!

This was an excellent read!
Such a pleasant change from many auto biographies.
He is not afraid to be totally honest and take many stabs at his credibility.
Many laughs to be had
If Chins Could Kill:.......2007-08-10
An entertaining look into gorilla film making and the ins and outs of a working actor.
Not just for Bruce Campbell fans...........2007-06-27
"If Chins Could Kill" provides wonderful insight to how Hollywood and the movie industry really works. Far too often the glamour of film (part of the mystique, schmaltz, whatever) leaves us assuming everyone in Hollywood is running around in limousines, dining with Julia Roberts, and wondering where to put their millions. Obscure wage slave members of unions who have to fight the machine and at the same time be obsequious price takers, begging for any chance, are more the reality, and Bruce Campbell does a wonderful job of making the film industry come alive from the perspective of a clever Joe-Sixpack. A wry inside observer you'd welcome as your friend.
Thoroughly enjoyable on many dimensions.
HAIL TO THE KING, BABY.......2007-04-25
BRUCE CAMPBELL
IF CHINS COULD KILL:CONFESSIONS OF A B MOVIE ACTOR
HAIL THE KING BABY, Bruce Campbell has all ways been one of my favorite actors ever since I first had seen "EVIL DEAD". I have followed his career since then and have never been disappointed by any one of his performances ever. So you can only imagine how excited I was when I first heard about this book being published, in fact I rarely ever get excited about a book [Stephen King, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Eric Bischoff, & a few others are the exceptions]. After first purchasing this book I started to wonder something, how long will it take before I get to the filming on "Evil Dead" in this book. But as soon as I started reading from the first page I forgot all about that, I found everything he had written about his childhood and growing up extremely interesting. In fact how all of them [the crew, Raimi, Spiegel, Becker, Tapert, & all the rest] got together is one of my favorite parts about the book.
Of course from there things get real interesting when they all get together to film "Evil Dead", of course the chapter before this was excellent as it is the story of how they raised the money for the film, "Within The Woods" [the sample film they made to show investors]. But on to the "Evil Dead" section of the book, this has got to be one of the greatest things I have ever read. The problems these guys went through is amazing, for a film that was so good and looked like it was a blast to make was anything but for this group. It also is to bad that somebody burnt the cabin down, but things get even more interesting as the group goes on to put "Evil Dead" in film festivals. It was cool to see how they went on to get distribution for the film that launched their careers. Also it was cool to find out That Stephen King loved the film and had some input into the second "Evil Dead" being made. Of course "Evil Dead 2" & "Army of Darkness" were some very interesting sections in this book, especially since each one of them like the original are classics.
Of course the whole book isn't about those three cult classics, in fact not all of it is about the film industry. But worry not all you TV fanatics out there, "Hercules, Xena, & Brisco County Jr." are all discussed in full detail, and if you were a fan of those shows like my self [DVD box sets are great] you will definitely be pleased with these sections. It was cool to find out about how he came into the director's chair, and learn more about his roll's on the shows. Of course he only appeared on "Hercules, and Xena" as were he starred in "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.", but the first two is were he got a lot more time behind the camera as a director. Also his various television roles are discussed in the book as well as his various film roles, although I wish he would have discussed the "Maniac Cop" series and "Serving Sara" more, although "Maniac Cop" was discussed more so then the latter. Many other topics are discussed within the pages of this book, his family, childhood, and every day things are in here as well, and the fan conventions are talked about as well. I also have the version of the book with the extra section about "The Chins Across America", worth the purchase is all I can say.
This was a great book, and I highly recommend this book to any and everybody out there.

One of the best kept secrets in hollywood is the use of consultants to fine-tune scripts. Whether you are a screenwriter or not, if you have a second sense or insightful knowledge that can improve film storytelling, you may have just found a new way to make over $100,000 a year.

A must in every screenwriter's library.......2006-08-06
Read and analyse your script from cover page, FADE IN to FADE OUT. Derek Rydall packs a lot of useful information in this well thought out, well written book. This is the meat and potatoes of the biz.
Do yourself a huge favor and read this book before you submit your next script. Chapter Two shows you how the studios see the difference between an amateur wannabee and a pro. Chapter Four brings in a wealth of good advice from well known experts like Linda Seger, Michael Hauge and David Freeman. David Freeman's sample scene analysis alone might make the difference between being kicked up the ladder or kicked out the door. You need every tool you can get your hands on to make your script a contender. Make this book part of your arsenal.
Whether you want to get your scripts in the door or want to be a script consultant this could be your blue prints to success.
The ONLY Book of Its Kind...A Great Way to a 6-Figure Income!.......2006-05-30
I really liked this book and I believe that there aren't any others like this one. It talks about how you can start a highly lucrative business as a script consultant and a re-writer.
The only thing that makes me hesitant is the ease (or difficulty) in establishing credibility as a consultant if one hasn't written anything worth mentioning.
Other than that, this is an incredible book and I hope that not too many people read it because it's an INCREDIBLE business idea and I want to pursue it myself.
An Interesting Insight into the Business.......2006-04-24
Can anyone who has ever been to a movie not have looked at some of them and wondered how such trash got produced? No one would start out with the intend of making a bad movie. You have to wonder how a group of people, presumably experienced and not unintelligent have produced something like that.
This book is written by a script consultant who tells what it's like to review and consult on the movie that's about to be made. While we all think that we could do this work, here's what the work involves. Here's how to get started. The best advice that I think he gives is work with someone in the business to at least establish the contacts.
This is a business like any other. You need at least the understanding of who does what. It is unlikely that very many of the readers of the book will actually become successful at script consulting, but it is still interesting reading to see what is done. It's an interesting insight into the movie production business.
Couldn't put it down!.......2006-02-28
As a screenwriter, this is the 14th book I've read on the subject, and by far the best. Derek Rydall not only prepares you externally to be a script consultant, he prepares you internally as well; forcing you to peel back the layers of your own psyche, and examine your inner obstacles to your own success.
Derek is not afraid to share his failures along with his successes, to help you avoid making the same mistakes. Each chapter starts with a few appropriate and inspirational quotes that create the setting for the chapter, and inspire the reader. What can I say? If it's not in the book, you don't need it! Five stars for this book that helps you shoot for the moon.

Screenwriter and Author
How to analyze stories in any form, write coverage, repair scripts, negotiate contracts and more.......2005-12-04
There are plenty of movies on the market which feature substandard writing - so bad that even an audience member might think they can do better, let alone an aspiring screenwriter. If you're a member of the latter group, I Could've Written A Better Movie Than That! How To Make Six Figures As A Script Consultant Even If You're Not A Screenwriter is for you. It tells how to use this sense of perfection to earn cash as a script consultant, and comes from author Rydall's years of experience in the industry. Chapters show how to analyze stories in any form, write coverage, repair scripts, negotiate contracts and more. Plenty of books tell how to write the script: few, except for this, tell how to make money repairing one.

If you have to write, you have to get this book. .......2006-10-08
There is only one reason a person writes - because they have to. And no one ever has to read what you write. But if you wish, pass copies out to your family and friends. I promise you they will gush and fawn. And you will realize the money you dropped on that script writing software was well spent. Then buy Christina's book. You'll find out that developing a script is not done by just sitting at a computer. Christina's too much of a lady to tell you in the book to do this, but here's what I did after reading COULD IT BE A MOVIE- I grabbed a couple note books, a bunch of sharp pencils, a bottle of scotch, found an empty table, and slashed my way into my soul. Christina helped me find places there I was proud to write about.
Great Book That Touches On Many Aspects of Writing.......2006-02-03
They come from all over the Seattle area. From the suburbs to downtown, they come to my screenwriting class. The first class I talk about ideas and, usually, one of the first things a student will say to me is: "Well, I have this idea and I think it would make a great movie!"
Then, over the next eight weeks, we take that idea, pick it apart and put it back together again in a form that resembles an actual movie.
In some ways, Christina Hamlett's book does the same thing. It challenges the ideas that you have. It certainly does not go into all the details of format, structure, type fonts and character development - but what she DOES do is touch on a lot of these things. Frankly, there are many other screenwriting books to help you with digging into the details and there are software programs to help with the format. She does provide you with a "FOUR ACT" breakdown that she recommends as opposed to the standard "THREE ACT" that God and everyone should know by now.
But, again, Ms. Hamlett's book challenges the ideas that you have to begin with. Would it be better as a play or a novel? Do you really want to do that adaptation of that book? Are you really keen on writing about that news story you saw the other night on the 11 o'clock news? She asks you the tough questions and forces you to think in different ways.
Once she has you thinking about your core idea and whether or not you want to nurse it along to fruition, she then takes on all the other aspects of Hollywood and selling your script, such as using a consultant, having meetings, entering contests, etc.
This book is extremely thorough but not in a detailed way. I do not mean that as a slight. To detail everything she writes about would mean that the book would be 800+ pages. She touches on something, like should you collaborate with another writer, asks you the questions, gives you some history of what she's dealt with and then moves on. Certainly someone could write an entire book on how to collaborate with another writer (and someone probably has) - but Ms. Hamlett hits the subject and moves on. Giving the reader something else to think about. In some ways this is almost a reference book with interesting stories.
Sprinkled throughout the book are interviews with a Writer, an Agent and a Producer. She also has laid out the book in a way that makes it easy to note where certain rules should apply, checklists to go by and dropping in other comments for your consideration. She doesn't tell you how to create your characters or everything that should go into your characters - but she does ask you to analyze them. She doesn't tell you what ideas are best to write about - but she gives you idea starters to get you kicked into gear.
If there is one consistent complaint that I have with this book, it is a consistent complaint I have for many of the books I have recently read: Lack of an "Internetography."
Ms. Hamlett FILLS the book with websites (at least two dozen) that can help you, the struggling writer. From researching out contests, to finding on-line scripts, to exploring other films, etc. It would be nice to see all these websites placed in one area in the back of the book and cross referenced as to subject matter and location in the book. Why hasn't someone done this yet?
Ms. Hamlett's book is a great book/reference guide for people who are questioning their idea and about to put it down on paper. She asks some tough questions and, using her years of experience, she provides plenty of stories (some very humorous) and examples to back up her opinions. She moves quickly from subject to subject (leaving the intricate details of "how-to" to other books and authors) - but she does do a thorough job of touching on most everything - some of which I haven't seen mentioned before (including thinking about copywriting your material and getting started in independent film).
Excellent.......2005-09-13
I've been thru several older "classic" books on screenwriting, and while each was helpful, they were the same old... stuff: formatting, characters and so on. Each seemed like a re-wording of the other.
OTOH, Kristina's book is straight from the gut, and is recent enough to tell it like it is. The fundamental stuff is all there, as well as up to date information. Her help was invaluable to me, a beginning screenwriter. I didn't want Syd Fields all over again, and this book delivers. Highly recommended!
Not just a How to book, but a How to and Enjoy!.......2005-07-29
As Christina Hamlett makes us aware in the very first pages of Could it be a Movie, technology has made it cheaper and easier for anybody with an idea to write a screenplay and get it made, and because so it is possible that everybody knows somebody who wants to be a screenwriter. But with the glut of "How To..." books on the market, how does one decide which is the best to guide them through the difficult process? Most screenwriting books are competent at laying out the nuts and bolts and technical jargon of screenwriting, but Christina Hamlett's Could it be a Movie takes it one step further, not only laying out the essentials and technical aspects of story and structure, but doing so with prose and eloquence that continues to encourage, nurture and cultivate not only the process of writing the screenplay but of conceiving and exploring ideas. From the very first page to the last, Christina let's us know that writing is a passion, and her passion for writing--and writers--is clear in every encouraging chapter, paragraph and example throughout, all of which are presented in a casual tone that demystifies and eliminates the fear of screenwriting, both the process and the business.
If you are a beginning writer, Could it be a Movie is definitely the first book you should pick up, and then pick up again and again. If you are a veteran of the trade looking for fresh, encouraging insight, Could it be will remind you of hopefully why you started writing in the first place: for simply the passion, joy and excitement of writing. This is more than a "How to..." book, it is a "How to and enjoy Screenwriting," guide, which is the most important aspect of storytelling.
This is a smart, useful book!.......2005-06-15
Hamlett has written an informative guide that is both entertaining and educational. Filled with on-target and no-nonsense advice, the insight "Could It Be A Movie" will give you is worth its weight in gold. Highly recommended!

Just not that Great.......2007-09-03
This addition to the Final Destination franchise just didn't make the cut for me. The premise of the book is similar to the other Final Destination books, a premonition by one of the due-to-die people helps him/her and his/her friends to cheat Death for the first time. After which, Death stalks them one by one to finish what Death has started in order not to mess up the Grand Design.
The writing per se is good. I liked how Nancy Collins showed the characters, the nuances to the background of each and the reason for their personality. However, I did not just buy the fact that Death would need the help of one of its supposed victims in order to take the lives of the others in the catastrophe and reward this person with the old life she craves for.
In this story, Death sought the help of Sherry, the premonition person, to help kill her friends by means of being a medium for Death's design in exchange for her old life back. The problem I have with this is mainly, by giving Sherry her life, Death would need to restructure the Grand Design also since Sherry would now be alive and could affect the lives of the other people around her (the survivors of the original Final Destination unknowingly saved the lives of many individuals who Death tried to kill in the pile-up of Final Destination 2). So if Death would not want to mess with his Grand Design, Sherry should also be killed. In addition to this, the possibility of Sherry getting pregnant and therefore adding another wrench to Death's Design.
I just think that the plot was not well thought of since the initial premise of protecting the Design is defeated by the derived method of protecting it.
Logic is just not found in the book.
Looks CAN Kill!.......2006-11-16
Other books in this series have left me extremely disappointed, so I was rather plesantly surprised when I got to the end of this book and found I was extremely hooked to the story and found the plot actually not half-bad.
Very simply put, this is the high-stakes world of fashion, media and limelight, where looks are everything and 'friends' are not as they seem. Backstabbing happens so often and you will not know who to trust.
A young model saves her friends from a ship's disaster and results in her own face getting horribly disfigured. To save her skin (literally), she makes a deal with the Grim Reaper to exchange her beauty for her friends' lives, in other words, if she helped the Reaper get rid of them and right the obstruction of death, he would restore her former beauty and let her live.
Each of the characters is well-developed and there is already a pre-existing story for each of them, which Nancy cleverly uses to get the reader to sympathise or understand, and then gruesomely kills them off. End of story. The ending I liked especially because it was clever, witty and very well-written without being melodramatic or even, sappy.
However, I thought the final twist was not as surprising or 'twist-y' as it could have been. It left me a little sore, wanting for more, but at the same time thankful that the journey had been completed. A piece of writing that can invoke such oxymoronic feelings in me definitely deserves these 5 stars.
This One Got Me Hooked!.......2006-11-12
This installment was the first one I read and I didn't want to stop reading the series when I finished with it. I finished this in a night because I could not put it down. Some parts, I'll admit, confused me on where everybody was and all, but (if that happens to you) keep reading and it'll all make sense eventually. I love the way some of the people died! I know that sounds horrible, but some of the deaths are great. I love the characters and the stories that go along with them. Nancy A. Collins wrote it nicely in the way that she introduced and gave the stories of the characters right before they died. I liked that and how it kept things organized. With books like these it's extremely easy to get unorginized and confuse everything, but with this book that wasn't the case. Definately my favorite of the series.
Exciting.......2006-08-14
I didn't know what to expect when reading this. I was a fan of the movies and needed something to tie me over until the third one was released and I found this book.
Following the same theme as the movies, the highest fashionable models of New York escape a cruise liner accident when Sherry, one of the youngest models recieves a premonition. Tragically she is injured and her career as a model was sacrificed to save her fellow models.
Now death has given Sherry the opportunity to be spared her life and her modeling career in exhange for the model's lives. Will she take his offer or will she slip past death and trick him at his own game?
This book was full of great plot twists and elaborate death scenes from the very first page. The character development is dispursed throughout the novel so the plot begins from the beginning chapter. I would recommend this book to any one interested in the Final Destination Series or just looking for a good horror/thriller novel.
What I enjoyed most was the intra-relationships referred to by Alex Browning who pulled himself and others off of Flight 180, and then again by Kimberly who predicted the route 23 smash-up. This novel continues to develope the plot and characters from the first two movies two help unravel the mystery behind the premonitions seen by the young adults.
Don't look at me!.......2006-08-09
Sherry, one of a group of supermodels all named after various wines, is suddenly visited with a vision as she and the other models and their boyfriends get ready to board a cruise ship to celebrate a successful season. The models all heed her advice and don't get on the ship. All except the head of the modeling agency, Merlot, who arranged the party and she ignores Sherry's warning. Sure enough, before the ship leaves the harbor it is hit by a cigarette boat and begins to sink. All the models are so grateful that they listened to Sherry, even though they still don't understand how she really knew. Sherry is hurt badly by flying debris and remains in the hospital for some time in a coma. She has severe burns and it looks as if her modeling career is over.
Eventually Sherry regains consciousness but she is so marred that none of the other models really wants to look at her or be around her. She becomes depressed. What will she do without her good looks? Then Death visits her in human form and tells her there is a solution and she can get her looks back. Does Sherry want to take it?
Nancy A. Collins has written a thrilling science fiction novel about conceited women with deep insecurity about their looks and their abilities. They are all about themselves and how they appear to others. She develops the characters so well you feel as if you know them. All the brand name dropping got a bit tedious but actually, since they were models, name brands are what they are all about. It was a very entertaining novel and if bizarre is your thing, this is the book for you.

Another inspiration story.......2006-05-19
I ran across this book and was compelled to read it. This stunning portrayal of the life of Tom Sullivan and how he overcame adversity in a world that he was unable to see, opens the eyes of the reader. He takes his darkened world and livens it up with color and animation taking you on a journey that surprises and delights. This is a must read.
uplifting.......2002-03-14
I'm stationed overseas in bosnia, and it can be very boring. this book gave me hope that my life will be better when i get back to the world. we'll see.
A Favorite After All These Years.......2001-11-25
I gave this book 5 stars because it has to be at least 20 years since I read it last (read it over and over and over then) and I still remember it with a great deal of fondness. My personal favorite has to be his descriptions of spending the summer in Scituate Mass--my mother was great friends with Tommy and his family and this is one of those books that just gives lots of laughs and reflections.
