Power Agent in Real Estate Review.......2007-06-27
I'm working on my 6th year as a real estate agent and out of all the business books that I've read this one really hits the nail on the head! I started reading the book about 3 weeks ago and it already has had an effect on my business. I've been on 4 CMA presentations and came out with 4 Listings on the same day that I met with the prospects. This book gives samples of dialogues with sellers and buyers, time management advice, goal setting, servicing listings, seperating the serious buyers from the not so serious, and at the same time looking out for your clients best interest. You must read this book to succeed!
Great book for all agents.......2007-03-23
For a rookie agent, this book has reinforced many things I have heard from other agents. It has provided insights and techniques that have already been used by myself and other more experienced agents in my workplace.
New agent info.......2007-03-08
this is a good book for a new agent to read. it has the basic fundamentals needed to earn an income in our real estate industry. If you have been an agent for the past year of more and are not doing these things you better read the book.
GREAT book- worth it's weight in gold!!.......2007-02-03
I thought this book was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! I recently attended a seminar with Darryl, and in person he is even better! The man is a genius! If you want to be a Top Producer- read his books, and if possible, go to his seminars- I know I'm on my way! Thanks Darryl- you're the best!! No BUTS about it!! ;)
A Must Have.......2006-05-24
Davis` book is the best I have read and I have read many. The ideas are numerous. I actually carry this book with me at all times to get inspired when I need another approach. I would suggest every serious agent purchase this book.

This book was not what I was expecting. Very helpful if you have never booked a show and are just starting out. Some of the information is a little basic.
Essential!.......2005-11-30
No one in the music industry, be they a musician, club owner, festival manager, booking agent, band manager, merch salesman, etc. has any good excuse NOT to read this book.
It's essential for those who are just starting out, and useful for those who have been in the game for many years. Goldstein's writing is clear and concise, and the book is organized well and peppered with real-life examples and "hot tips", which keep it interesting.
There are dozens of fabulous books on the music industry, from how-to guides to high-level marketing strategy books, but no one should bother reading any of them until they've read this book. It's absolutely essential.

Gold standard for Music Business books.......2004-11-19
Review written by
Kerry Dexter
Dirty Linen Magazine
Dec.2004/January 2005 Issue
Jeri Goldstein fairly well created the gold standard for music business books that are both practical and wise when the first edition was released in 1998, offering succinct ideas on setting goals, planning for a long-range future as a musician, when to quit your day job, and when to rethink your music career. Along with those came big-picture straight forward advice on negotiating with venues, planning tour routing, how to set up an office, what to include in a letter of intent, and what to look for in a contract, among other things. The latest edition includes all that, organized into bite-sized chapters packed with information and seasoned with sidebar quotes and tips from music industry professionals...There are updates to the resources sections included with each chapter, added information about immigration issues for artists and about creating and using electronic press kits, and materials on web design. New edition or old, it's a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone who wants to know more about the many-faceted business of performing arts, touring and presenting, and integrating that part of a musician's life into a successful career.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for New Writers Breaking In.......2007-09-19
This is a wonderful book that describes the business side of literary agencies, publishing houses and the relationship between the two that makes the publishing wheel go round. He offers loads of contractual tips and explainations of your rights - which is very important.
I read his book when I was shopping my own book Never Trust A Man In Alligator Loafers. I still refer to it and brush up on contract knowledge and rights.
If you're wondering if you need a literary agent - my answer is yes!
An essential for writers .......2007-05-12
The title is a bit misnomered since in effect an author cannot be his own literary agent and to access editors at the major publishing houses the screening of a representative is now required by most. That aside, the book is a treasury of essential insider information for not only the newbie but for an author like myself who after having seven books published is still struggling to get his work into print.
Very Informative, Packed with Information.......2006-03-27
Writers, find out about the business-side of writing with this easy read.
Find out how Agents decide which projects to take on and which to return with note: "sorry, not interested." And if a publisher wants to make a deal with you, find out how to understand the contract.
Best,
Shalla

To help writers understand the publishing industry.......2005-07-30
The title "How to be Your Own Literary Agent" may be misleading for some people, who may take it to mean that by reading this book, one can skip the need of querying for agents. It doesn't help you get published; it says you still have to have agents to get into big publishing houses, but it does give an insider detailed view of the agent business and the publishing industry.
For the aspiring writer, most of the information is interesting but not useful, as the book itself admits - who in the world dares to bargain with the editor anyway, when he is ready to kiss the editor's feet for agreeing to publish his first book? However, for people who wish to become professional writers, such knowledge will certainly come in handy after one becomes published.
The book reads smooth and is extremely funny, making it a pleasurable bedtime reading. I finished it around 3 a.m. with a sore neck. For example, Mr. Curtis mentions this client who claimed to be a mafia hit man. As a result, he had little trouble getting his royal check on time - he'd simply call the publisher and say "if my royalty check ain't ready by noon tomorrow, I'm gonna marry you to a plate-glass window." (p.114)
As one can imagine, the publisher was quick to meet this guy's special needs. Then one day the poor guy was found shot dead outside some motel. Mr. Curtis didn't think the publisher did it.
I highly recommend this book to any writer.

Customer Reviews:
Ignore the doofuses below who didn't like it........2001-04-01
Take it from me, a multiply-published author (three major books) with two of the best houses in New York: Curtis knows what he is talking about. The title of this book is ironic; he clearly believes that writers benefit greatly from agents. This book will teach you what you need to know before you hire one. Excellent work, and timeless advice.
Needs updating urgently!.......2000-12-16
I found the book informative, but it lacks the current information--like the fact that publishers of fiction now want at least 70,000 word manuscripts before they will even look at it. Curtis's book is discouraging, I agree, but the fact is that it really seems to be like he depicts. If it were more up-to-date, I would've added two additional stars to my rating.
AVOID this book until you actually have a deal on the table.......2000-07-13
This book has a lot of interesting info and "real world" statistics. Also useful information on what you can negotiate for in a book deal and what's standard and what isn't, etc. But all in all, it is totally discouraging. His first chapters are so depressing that you might never overcome having read them if you haven't finished your book yet. For example, he says that stats on unsolicited manuscripts sans agents are at least 5,000 a year per publishing house and he says it is simply not economical for them to hire readers, because less than one in a thousand amounts to something the house might want to publish. They all get sent back without being looked at. That is, if you send a self-addressed stamped envelope.
And he says agents don't want anyone who is not already published. Next to no chance of getting one unless your cover says something like "I invented the submarine and have written a book . . . " So--you can get a loan if you have money in the bank. And you can get a literary agent if you've been published. The same old story. It sounds very certainly impossible.
From what Curtis, an agent of 20 or 30 years says, there're tons of manuscripts that can't even get read and it has no relation whatever to what is good and what isn't. I'm ready to quit the entire idea and I'm only 1/3 of the way thru the book.
According to Curtis, it takes an agent. Period. And if you have no way of finding one of those without the same blind mailings you'd send to publishing houses, you may as well put the "grand novel" away and hope in 4 or 5 or 10 years, by some luck, you run into someone who is connected.
So I'm left wondering, why does anyone bother to write at all, much less buy Mr. Curtis' depressing book? There must be SOME way to get through, right? He offers precious little hope, I'm afraid.
I don't know if this writer-editor-agent meant to be so discouraging, but wow! Completely! Avoid this book if you want to keep writing.
writers beware.......2000-06-19
Don't buy this book if you're still trying to sell yours to a publisher. Though it does have invaluable information on how to negotiate a contract, it spends the first chapter or two telling you how hopeless your attempts at selling your own book without an agent are. More agent propaganda and self-aggrandizement.
Business Side of Writing.......2000-03-14
Richard Curtis--a successful literary agent from New York City--tells writers what they must know to get published and to not get taken advantage of by agents and publishers. Mr. Curtis has been around the publishing business for many years and his commentary shows it. He discusses literary agencies, rights, money matters, agent clout, movies into books, multibook deals, advances, book clubs, taxes, publication dates, and the matter of fees, royalties and expenses. As one of the leading literary agent he covers approaching the various markets, negotiating successful contracts, benefitting from agents, handling legalities, and strategies and skills that will benefit writers in today's publishing market.
A must for anybody seeking a professional writing career. Even established writers will learn a few things about the book business.

Customer Reviews:
It's like being a fly on the wall of a talent agency.......2005-01-16
As an agent, I have a love/hate relationship with this book. On the one hand, I hate it for exposing so many of my secrets. But on the other hand, I love that it's so direct and honest. Nancy ran her own successful talent agency for many years and she obviously knows what she's talking about. So if you're my client, please don't buy this book. But if you're not, I suggest you pick this one up right away.
A must for anyone who is building an acting career!.......2003-03-19
This is a great book, I couldn't put it down. My husband and I are both actors, and we actually fought over who got to read it first (we alternated). I have already recommended this book to all of my friends who are actors. It is that valuable and should be required reading for every actor in Hollywood.
The book is not just a primer on the Hollywood protocol and pecking order, but "How to Agent Your Agent" goes into such wonderful detail so as to demystify how an actor should handle his/her agent. So many actors are constantly in a quandry of how to handle a situation with their agents, or they are downright dissatisfied with their agents. This book helps an actor to define what you have control over and what you can change. Years of experience are in this book to help keep actors from making mistakes when it comes representation.
Thank you, Ms. Rainford, for telling it like it is (and being such a great storyteller).
Wish there were more "tricks of the trade.".......2002-12-22
Only a small section of this book - a "FAQ" - is devoted to "how to agent your agent. Most of this book is a very well written insider's look at what an agent does, with lots of anecdotes from Rainford's work as an agent. Great if you don't know what agents do, but if you're a professional looking for that edge - I'm working, how to I get more out of my agent - there isn't that much you won't have figured out already.
HELPFUL TO WRITERS AS WELL..........2002-07-30
This book is wonderful. Humorous and informative; my favorite combination. I am not an aspiring actress, and have only delt with Two Literary Agents in the sale of my first 4 books; however, I found Ms. Rainfords book an excellent resource. I would recomend this book to anyone who has an Agent; is thinking of getting an Agent; wants to become an Agent; or is thinking of leaving her Agent. Or anyone who is going to HOLLYWOOD to PITCH anything.
It's hard to believe Nancy Rainford hasn't written more books. Perhaps a humorous novel about her business? The book flows with the ease of a best selling novel!
5 stars to this one!
Marsha Marks
Here's the real deal kid.......2002-06-04
Could also be the name of Nancy Rainford's insightful and energetic book. How to Agent Your Agent is at once a fun breezy read and the advice every actor needs to set up for themselves a realistic philosophy and strategy creating their success in the wild business of show. To all but brandname actors the interior life of the creature called agent is a mystery. Ms. Rainford dismantles so many myths there's little choice but to draw clean slate on what you think you know about agents. Comparable to "The Art of War," the hunter must understand the nature, habits, and motivations of game sought. If you believe in the value of your craft and take your business seriously read this book not once but over and over. Take a walk in the agents shoes so the agent can walk with you.

How To Be Your Own Booking Agent And Save Thousands of Dollars- A Performing Artist's Guide To A Successful Performing Career
Customer Reviews:
A Career Starter and Saver!.......2007-03-19
Every few years I re-read this book as my music career grows and I find new ways to use the expertise she has gathered here. The book is a pleasure to read, with clear writing, fine organization and listings of valuable resources and contacts. Highly recommended!
A bible for working musicians.......2003-10-18
My friend recommended this book to me a few years ago - it hasn't been far from my office desk ever since. This book is not only filled with clear, good advice and hundreds of helpful quotes and stories from all kinds of people in the business, it's also well-organized and enjoyable to read. The author breaks things down to their essentials, dealing with the big questions about being your own boss, along with the thousands of little details. I haven't seen a book that beats this one for its subject. If you want the real information about how it's really done, get this book.
this book helped me get more gigs.......2003-08-16
I really liked how indepth this book is. If you can stand to read it all (it is long), you will have a good understanding on how to approach club owners and others in the music business. I like this book and use it with the Guerrilla Marketing book by Bob Baker and $100,000 in Music by David Hooper to really make my gigs great. INCREDIBLE RESOURCE!.......2003-04-18
I originally won a consultation package with Geri Goldstein and only had one phone conference with her. During our meeting, I also ordered a copy of this book. Since I have received this book (two years ago) I have not had to call her due to the extremely vast amount of knowledge already contained in her book!! Every time I have another question that I would think of asking her, I open this book and find the answer and much more. This is the most intricately detailed book on self promotion that I have ever acquired. I still have not covered all the ground this book contains?! I highly recommend this book to aspiring artists, agent and managers.
If you are playing out, get this book!.......2002-08-18

Must Read for Real Estate Agents.......2007-06-27
This is an excellent book on the advantages of being an RE agent or Realtor! I just recently became a Realtor and found this book to give guidelines and scenarios on how to legally and ethically invest in the products that we list and sell as RE professionals. An added bonus are the sample property analysis and addendums to show you what to look for and also how to profit from inside information on sound investments from sellers. This is a great reference book for my RE library.

Useless book!!.......2006-10-09
Whatever you do, do NOT use this book to study for your CA state licensing exam. I started to and realized after I was working on the practice tests that they didn't make any sense whatsoever and didn't even refer to the material in the Principles book (which is supposedly the basis for the exam). The math section is helpful, but wayyyy more complicated than anything you'll see on the test. Thankfully, I had enough time to switch to Minnie Lush's book and did pass the CA test on my first try. However, if I had just stuck with using this book, I would have been in SERIOUS trouble.

Living Proof That What Darryl Says/Writes Works!.......2007-07-20
Once again Darryl Davis is helping newbies cross over into successful real estate agents. How to Make $100,000+ Your First Year as a Real Estate AgentDarryl's program was responsible for my first year of $129,000 in earnings and after 6 years of real estate, going back and reading his newest book, I am once again refocusing on basics and getting myself to the next level. This is absolute must reading for all!
Get Back To Basics.......2007-07-18
Most New Agents Try To Excel At Every Aspect Of Real Estate Sales. Although Darryl's Book Covers All Topics, Its Emphasis is On Becoming A Strong, Hard Core Listing Agent. Master That, And You Have Built A Foundation For Your Career That Will Last. Well Done.
Awesome, Aweome, Awesome.......2007-07-13
I can't tell you how charged up I was after reading Darryl's book. With the real estate market not doing so hot I was really thinking that I would have to leave this business. But after I read this book I psyched myself up and I am back in the game. Darryl gives you tools and different ways to look at things. I think this book is great for the new realtor and even great for a seasoned realtor who is "stuck in his/her ways". Really a great book. Hats off
Great book for the Want to be Successful Realtor.......2007-07-13
Have you ever heard of going back to the basics? Every realtor in their career has to do just that on occasion and this is a great book to use as your guideline for doing so. You can expand on the ideas and be resourceful in your own ideas as well. For all your friends and acquaintances that say they have thought or would like to get into real estate, this is a great book for them to use as a guideline. While not everyone will agree with every detail, there isn't a book out there that you will. Take the ideas and run!! If you gained one thing from all books and speakers, think of the possibilities?!
Better Options Are Available!!!.......2007-07-01
Thanks David for your review on the book. You saved me time and money. I'm not surprised to learn that the book was a marketing gimmick for his site. Especially when considering that the release date was pushed back for over a year. That explains the repeated delays.
Though I agree that the best way to build a long term business to to focus on the Sphere of Influence, for new agents, it is also good to mix in FSBO & Expireds at least until the SOI can support a strong business base. The reason most people (including myself) have shied away from this group is primarily because of fear. Another good option would be to research and decide on a farm area. But one must be consistent by implementing a 12x12, otherwise, marketing dollars and efforts will be wasted. This is again in addition to focusing on your SOI... you never want to abandon them because they are your best support system. Another benefit of working in conjunction with a farm area, for sale by owners and Expireds is that you will in fact ADD to your SOI! If memory serves me correctly, SOI will yield 12:1 where as a farm will yield 50:1, so the SOI is CLEARLY the best choice. But when you consider BUILDING your business, especially for a new agent, don't forget to consider adding FSBO, Expireds or a farm area.
Books that I recommend for those starting out are:
The Millionaire Real Estate Agent
21 Things I Wish My Broker Had Told Me
How to Become A Power Agent in Real Estate
How to List and Sell Real Estate
Also, for new agents starting out, I would recommend starting with a franchise or independent company. Reason being is the fees for 100% are high and paying desk fees of $500-$1200/mo is a HUGE expense for someone starting out. Most 100% companies charge for copies, printing and other items. Though I believe that 100% companies are a good thing, it has it's not for everyone, especially those starting out unless you grew up in a family that was heavily involved in real estate and THOROUGHLY know the ins and outs of the business AND have a STRONG client base STARTING OUT!
I began with a well known franchise, but wish I had gone with a different one because there were better options available. The good news is that within my 1st year of sales, a light bulb went off! And though I wasn't ready for the jump to a 100% company, I researched and joined another franchise. I recommend looking into companies such as Keller Williams Realty that offer a higher split and gives the opportunity to go to 100% with in a year. I am happy to say that next year, I will be in a position to join a 100% company.
If you have any questions about starting out in the business or building your business, I'm here to help!
