5 out of 5 stars REVISED OLDIE BUT GOODIE.......2006-08-20

Everything I mentioned in my critic about the orignal Hit and Run stands still true for this one, but don't expect to be a fantastic trader from the start either. You have to study his setups, what works now and what doesn't. It would help to get his swing/day trading service for a while and pick up on the ideas. Of course, Jeff's daily commentary are the BEST, bare none. Well worth to invest in his books and service, but don't expect instant miracles either.

And yes, Jeff is a successful trader himself, working out of his home in Malibu. The book and setups are not just text book varieties, they come from real life every day trading.

2 out of 5 stars strategy not quite working.......2006-06-08

I have entered strategy in the system, but seems like that most of them not quite accurate. Any help?

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best strategies for short-term and day traders!.......2005-11-09

I have read many reviews on other sites on this book and I am amazed by the amount of people that think for one second that Jeff Cooper would just give you a trading system for $100. I must admit, that with a little ingenuity one can make a lot of money with these strategies. You won't find an easier method of trading if you use just a little common sense and approach these strategies with a well devised trading plan. However, this system isn't for everyone, as it usually comes with intra-day drawdowns in your p-n-l, but it's the end of the day that counts. The strategies look to capture the big moves and not the quick bucks, there is more money to be made that way.

The Hit and Run strategies follow the best trading practices:

-enter as a stock is moving in your direction (the trend is your friend)
-know your risk (have your stop-loss in place)
-lock in profits
-maximize your gains
-being prepared before the market opens
-solid strategies based on price-action that have worked for years

The only problem that I have with the strategies are that it seems to me to have too large of a stop-loss for the intra-day trader. Once again, with a little thinking I devised a way that works for me...risking less per trade than what Cooper mentions in the book.

What's so amazing about trading is that so many people are looking for "Something for Nothing" and it just isn't going to happen. Why, who wouldn't pay $100 for a trading system that worked? The truth once again is that many people could be 'given' a trading system that was profitable, but they would somehow mess it up. Trading systems that work, work because the emotional element (the human mind) has been eliminated. So I must say get the book and study the market, you can be successful using the strategies in this book!

Then again, read the other reviews, convince yourself it doesn't work and let me keep trading the strategies my personalized way and let me make the money.

Book Description

In an unprecedented look at Babe Ruth’s amazing batting power, sure to inspire debate among baseball fans of every stripe, one of the country's most respected and trusted baseball historians reveals the amazing conclusions of more than twenty years of research. Jenkinson takes readers through Ruth's 1921 season, in which his pattern of battled balls would have accounted for more than 100 home runs in today's ballparks and under today's rules. Yet, 1921 is just tip of the iceberg, for Jenkinson's research reveals that during an era of mammoth field dimensions Ruth hit more 450-plus-feet shots than anybody in history, and the conclusions one can draw are mind boggling.

5 out of 5 stars An impressive home run of a book.......2007-09-08

If you've read "The Big Bam" by Leigh Montville and/or "Babe" by Robert Creamer, you owe it to yourself to read Bill Jenkinson's book. Although you may think it's not possible, Ruth was a better slugger than you ever imagined. He was truly one of a kind.

Jenkinson's book is interesting, fascinating and meticulously well researched. He spent more than 25 years researching each of Ruth's home runs, during spring training, the regular season, post season and on barnstorming tours.

Part of Jenkinson's book details Ruth's "hidden career" of exhibition games. Jenkinson calculates that Ruth participated in 800 exhibition games in six countries, 42 states and more than 200 cities. He blasted more than 300 homers in those games. In 1921, Ruth played an unbelievable total of 207 games. A consummate showman, Ruth kept an incredible schedule, not to mention his off-the-field activities.

Jenkinson focuses on Ruth's power and superlatives. The Bambino didn't hit many routine home runs. Most fans really don't comprehend how spacious the ballparks were in Ruth's days. Jenkinson calculates that Ruth walloped 22 fly outs that traveled more than 450 feet. No one has ever hit as many balls as far as Ruth. What he could do in today's ballparks is unfathomable.

Jenkinson spends 70 pages near the end of the book discussing comparative difficulty of Ruth's home run feats compared to today's game, drawing conclusions and making projections. Stadium photographs showing where some of Ruth's monumental homers landed are particularly interesting and impressive.

5 out of 5 stars research and more research.......2007-07-23

Any historian or student of history must engage in countless hours of research in order to convincingly prove his thesis. Mr. Jenkinson succeeds with flying colors. The most fascinating section of this book is the one dealing with comparative difficulty. Jenkinson leaves no doubt that Ruth played under much more adverse conditions than modern day sluggers. I telephoned Mr. Jenkinson about a couple of points of comparison not mentioned in his book that had me wondering. One was the fact that Ruth played against only 7 teams and faced pitchers much more frequently (4-man rotations) than today's players. Could this be considered an advantage for Ruth. Jenkinson replied that after a while it really doesn't matter how often a hitter faces a pitcher. Another point I made was the fact that during day games, which Ruth played exclusively, shadows can hinder the batter's view. Again Jenkinson said that while this may have been a disadvantage for Ruth, the impact would have been negligent.
I must say that his willingness to discuss these issues (and others) with a reader of his fine book only makes his work more appreciated. I am looking forward to his next book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Look at the Sultan of Swat.......2007-06-08

Thnak for this thoughtful, insightful and persuasive presentation regarding the the career of Babe Ruth. While I consider myself a baseball fan, prior to reading this book, I would consider myself largely ignorant of Ruth's amazing career. After reading this book, I am blown away by Ruth's accomplishments as well as his place in comparison with the modern players. I highly recommend this book and look forward to your next book.

Bill Jenkinson's book, "The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs"! It is the Babe Ruth book that I have been waiting for years to be written!! Bill has 28 years of researching my grandfather under his belt for writing this book. He can back everything up with published facts and asks anyone to challenge him! It answers alot of questions that I am asked about my grandfather. For example, his TRUE hitting ability, if he had the luxury of today's traveling from game to game, the new equipment, how much would he earn today, difference in how he was treated by the press, sports medicine of the time...etc. He backs it all up with fact too! It reads beautifully, and takes this man, this incrediable talent and blows your mind with what you don't know about the Sultan of Swat! It is really not an expensive book either! I HIGHLY reccommend this book for everyone! This is the REAL Babe in action!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Mr. Jenkinson!.......2007-05-04

This book is unlike any other on Babe Ruth, and I have read quite a few most recently Montville's "Big Bam" and Reisler's treatise on the 1920 season. Jenkinson has spent nearly 30 years recreating all of Ruth's long drives, those counted as homers and those that may have just been flyouts. I had no idea that records this detailed could be obtained from Ruth's era, but Jenkinson has read every sportswriting account imaginable for each official game and for hundreds of exhibition (preseason, during season, and postseason) games that Ruth participated in.
I had always labored under the assumption, even after reading all the bios, that many of Ruth's homeruns were simply the product of the short right field at Yankee Stadium. In fact, the Babe hit very few down the right field line; most of his drives were between right-center and left-center field. Right-center was quite a shot in Ruth's day since the fence angled out sharply. The Babe also had tremendous power to the opposite field.
Jenkinson's "spray" diagrams show all the homeruns hit by Ruth and their approximate distances. Aerial photos of the stadiums around Ruth's time are also shown and arrows shown where Babe's longest drives landed.
A second assumption of mine is that Babe did not take care of himself over the years. In fact, the man wanted to exercise more but the Yankee ball club would not let him in order "to save his legs" for the long season. Ruth had taken it upon himself before spring training started, for several seasons, to hire one of the best exercise gurus in New York. The fact that Ruth could keep coming back strong after all his early season illnesses and nagging injuries shows the fortitude of the man. Baseball was his life and he never wanted to let any one down that had come to see him play. He had a remarkable compassion for people that is shown in several places.
The third assumption was that Babe was probably just an average fielder. I had always wondered about what type of fielder he was, and was always surprised that no biography that I read ever mentioned this. In fact he was an elite fielder, one of the best in the game according to Tris Speaker, the premier outfielder of the day. He was also a terrific baserunner until his last five years.
Babe Ruth was one of a kind and he would be a superstar in any era, whether as the great pitcher he was or as an everyday player. Jenkinson does an interesting analysis of how difficult it was for Ruth as opposed to the difficulties faced by today's players. He also has analyzed conservatively how many homeruns the Babe would hit based on today's shrunken stadiums. It will show the sluggers of the past 30 years in a new light. I hope to meet the author someday at the Babe Ruth museum. No one compares to the Bambino.

If you ever wanted to make a great living trading the stock market, this is the best way to get there.

Chapters 17 through 22 focus on vitally important (yet often ignored) aspects of trading, including money management, stop placement, exiting positions, daily preparation and other areas that separate top traders from everyone else. In this one section alone you will learn:Which set-ups consistently produce the biggest gains. Why surprises almost always happen in the direction of the trend. Why the biggest profits are made in a falling market. How to increase your gains by narrowing your focus. When to hold a position overnight, and when to exit before the close. How to prepare a winning plan of attack for each day's trading battle. How good money management will save you during dry spells and choppy markets. Why stepping in front of size is the best way I know to get back on track. Why you should never, NEVER trade off the media's advice. Why your biggest mistakes can lead to your biggest wins -if you're willing to admit them.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very solid........2003-04-24

I've never read the first one, so I can't compare and have no opinion on it. However, I did find this book is be very good. Gets straight to the point, has a dozen step by step strategies and methods that I'm positive will work with proper money management. I don't agree with all the theories, nor will I necessarily use these in my own trading. But, for someone new or looking for short swing type of trading methods .. this one is worth a look.

Pricey, but consider it an investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Insight Into Hit and Run Trading II.......2002-10-03

Following up the original collection of successful strategies in Hit and Run Trading is Jeff Cooper's second and equally outstanding book on capturing explosive moves in stocks. I imagine the question on everyone's mind is, "Great, but will this improve my trading?" and the answer is - YES. The first book kick-started daytrading careers for thousands, and this one is bound to make you wonder how much further the author can break down the complexities of the markets and delineate methods for taking advantage of it.

Hit and Run Trading II, like its predecessor, is all about taking advantage of strongly trending stocks. There are four parts of this book revealing 17 new strategies:

1. Trend continuation patterns, holding for a few days

2. Cooper's best strategies, including Stepping In Front of Size

3. Reversal strategies

4. Techniques to improve your trading, including 40 learning examples.

Cooper provides solid groundwork for interpreting the dynamics of stocks and the market so traders can recognize the strategies for themselves. For example, the Intraday Relative Strength Trading Strategy (IRSTS), used to identify and exploit strength in big-cap Nasdaq stocks by comparing to the S&P futures action, is clearly defined for makings risk-adverse decisions. After Jeff outlines his strategies with a set of rules and examples, a trader is practically given a map of what to look for. All of the strategies of the book are discussed and broken down to a specific set of rules to follow. Of course, every situation in the market is truly different from the next, but it's the basic pattern and trends that repeat themselves over and over that Jeff has identified and made obvious.

A chapter of Q&A's is another valuable resource of this book. Through the years Jeff has been interviewed by radio shows and newspapers, and this represents the best and most useful insights from that material. This is where the reader can really get a feel for the thought process of a trader. Trading isn't just about having some great strategies to apply to the market; to be successful requires lots of hard work and devotion. From being fully prepared each day by locking in hours of research, to having a good understanding of how your judgment may be flawed, this section is an important part of this book and alone makes it worthwhile.

If you read the first Hit and Run book, you are aware of Jeff's style and well-thought-out strategies. This book is of the same spirit and quality. Having Jeff's strategies on your side would be a tremendous asset to any trader. Simply getting a glimpse of his perspective on the market would be beneficial to everyone from scalpers to intermediate-term traders. Jeff is a daytrader and a highly successful one. If given a chance, this book could take traders a long way, but as always, the decisions are always yours.

4 out of 5 stars Good all around daytrading book.......2001-11-24

Looking at Jeff's second book, I am happy to say that I found it to be very useful. It goes into a lot more detail than his first book and gave me a better sense of how he trades. I mean, he introduced a number of new strategies and also included a pretty detailed section on the data feeds he uses, how he interprets charts intraday, and recommends a reliable brokerage system for you. It's a great little package with lots of helpful information.

2 out of 5 stars Just a repackage of...........2000-07-08

Cooper's "setups" as presented in this book are really just a repackaging of various chart patterns. I believe the reader would be far better served by understanding why these setups work (when they do) rather than what they are specifically; an examination that the author chooses not to provide (after all, what do you want for 100 bucks??)

Bulkowski's book on chart patterns & Prechter's book on Elliot waves will give you a far better understanding of the market than any of the Cooper books. In fact, with an understanding of Elliot all of these patterns or setups become remarkably clear, to the point where you shouldn't need this book in the first place

5 out of 5 stars Good tactical book to attack the Market.......1999-07-21

I read the book and found that these strategies are very good. I think the key thing to keep in mind when trading these strategies is to be well capitalized.

If there is a more archetypical tale of Hollywood in the '80s than the buccaneers' adventures of Jon Peters, Barbra Streisand's former hairdresser, and his business partner Peter Guber, it hasn't been written yet. This thorough, stylish book recounts the rise of Peters and Guber, who together earned fortunes by schmoozing their way to the top, seducing gullible investors, and shoving aside the filmmakers who actually turned out successful films like "Rain Man" and "Batman." The Japanese executives at Sony, in this delightful insider account, were just the most recent and most hoodwinked in a long line of Peters' and Gubers' dupes.

    Book Description

Hit and Run tells the improbable and often hilarious story of how two Hollywood film packagers went on a campaign to reinvent themselves as studio executives -- at Sony's expense. Veteran reporters Nancy Griffin and Kim Masters chronicle the rise of Jon Peters, a former hairdresser, seventh-grade dropout, and juvenile delinquent, and his soulless soul mate, Peter Guber -- and all the sex, drugs, and fistfights along the way. It is the story of the ultimate Hollywood con job and the standard by which every subsequent business blunder has been measured. Hit and Run delivers rock-solid business reporting liberally laced with inside gossip and outrageous scandal -- plus a new afterword bringing us up to date on the latest fallout from the Guber-Peters legacy.

5 out of 5 stars How to lose a lot of money in Hollywood........2005-07-07

I think the subtitle of the book says it best. Jon Peters and Peter Guber took Sony for a long and expensive ride in Hollywood.
The book also serves as a biography of these two famous gentlemen and how they managed to take credit for a lot of other peoples creativity. They took credit for other peoples ideas and then promoted the hell out of these movies and managed to make themselves rich. As the authors put it, most people in Hollywood knew their reputation. It took a foreign business (Sony) buying Columbia to figure out their less than stellar management capabilities. For this, Sony lost a ton of money.
The authors do a nice job of detailing Guber and Peters backgrounds and their unique chance at changing the landscape of Hollywood. This is a fairly long book, but well written, so the time flies when you read it. A great read about the sordid business of Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fast, Educational.......2005-06-14

"Hit and Run" is a fun, breezy, eye-opening book. There's never a boring page. It is packed with information and concisely written. You never get the sense that the author is dragging things out just to fill a few hundred pages. Even though Guber and Peters were crooks, I think there's still plenty of things you can learn from them and they are still inspiring in a way. I thought robber barons went out with the 19th century, but now I see there are still people with the same swindler's mentality. "Hit and Run" is an eye-opening book, just like Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle." One thing I wonder very much is why all these big corporations did business with Guber and Peters without thoroughly investigating their backgrounds? Seems like there are some very stupid people running large corporations. Hollywood sure is full of sharks, whores, and criminals and always was. Innocent newcomers don't have a chance.

I was totally engrossed in this book. Flew through it. I thought it was too cool that I found this in hardcover in... store! Best [$$] I ever spent!

5 out of 5 stars The funniest non-fiction book you will ever read.......2002-11-05

I read this book three years ago and I'm still laughing.

Griffin & Masters have created THE required reading book on everything that is wrong with Hollywood. They were able to tell the inside stories of multi-million dollar deals and make them understandable. Jon Peters, a barely literate hairdresser who happened to be friends with Barbara Streisand, and his business partner Peter Guber schmoozed their way through the 80s and were picked by Sony to run their newly acquired Columbia/Tri-Star pictures. Billions of dollars in losses later (Last Action Hero, I'll Do Anything) they got kicked out.

It is really an incredible story. If it was fiction, you'd think it completly impossible to believe, but it is all true.

4 out of 5 stars Hit and Run.......2002-01-23

The main characters Eddie,Scott,Winks and Cassie are all involoved in a horrible prank that nearly results in the death of the four. These teenagers are best friends. They are called the joke gang because they love making jokes. Although one of them doesent't find jokes as funny as the others do.They call him the scardey kats because he's very shy and timid and easy to play jokes on. Though Cassie,Winks, and Scott don't know that he plays a horrible joke on them that they'll never forget. One night they go out for a ride because they need to practice for their driving tests. They hit a man. After that night they are terrified. Someone starts scaring them and they have no idea who it is. They know that who ever is scaring them has to know them very well somehow. When they find out who it is doing all this they would of never expected it to be that person. I really liked this book because it was really entartainig. If you like scary stories I really recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars A Step beyond Asset Allocation and Annual Rebalancing.......2007-02-24

For all of us that are interested in taking a more active role in our investments, the processes in this book are a good next step. There is a rare balance of acceptance of risk and potential gain in the author's suggested quarterly re-allocation method. The method is not a "read the market" approach, which virtually no one can do consistently, if at all. It is rather a method to use recent fund performance as a purchase / reallocation guideline for short periods of time (as in quarterly). It is definitely not for everyone, because of the quarterly attention required. A very good incremental step in a maturing investor's education.

5 out of 5 stars Important Investment Guide for the Novice and Expert alike.......2006-11-27

Being a financial advisor, I've come across books that range from the very basic to the ridiculous.

Appel's book, although more conventional then his previous titles, lays out a comprehensive, although extremely practical and relevant strategy for 1) understanding how the markets both stocks and bonds work and 2) giving the investor various options to use that although do involve time and some monitoring, provide a solid blue-print step by step guide that will allow them to more intelligently invest with their hard-earned assets while reducing risk where possible.

Moreover, the combination of fundamental and technical analysis in security selection allows the investor to capitalize on both areas of the market that are affected by emotional factors (external events) but also takes advantage of proven technical and analytical strategies that in the long-haul will give the investor above market gains.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Investing Guide for Self-directed Investors.......2006-11-07

Gerald Appel is a well-known author, technical analyst (and developer of the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator) who has written a practical guide to investing while dispelling a number of Wall Street myths on along the way. His book's purpose is to help readers who have limited time on their hands become active intelligent investors, as well as to help those individuals who are willing to put in more time and effort.

In the book, Appel covers specifically which vehicles to invest in, the timing of the buys and sells, and how to construct a portfolio that is diversified and balanced based on the individual's age and financial situation. Throughout the book, he stresses the importance of active, informed, self-directed investing instead of the out-of-date and risky buy and hold approach which "may or may not service investors purposes in the future."

The author suggests that investors focus not only on the U.S. stock market, but also on the overseas markets. He recommends investing in U.S. stocks, bonds, and money market instruments, as well as the more unfamiliar foreign bonds and stocks, real estate, and investments in foreign countries.

Appel kicks off the book covering the myth of why buy and hold is not a risk-free investment strategy compared to active management. He shows that by using a few indicators such as the NASDAQ/NYSE ratio, direction of interest rates, public sentiment, and the Best Six Months Strategy (buy at end of October and sell in May and go into cash until next October) that investors can reduce their risk and obtain decent investment performance. For example, by using the NASDAQ/NYSE relative strength ratio with a 10 dma crossover signal, according to Appel it is possible to beat the market's performance with about half the risk.

In another chapter, the author compares three diversified mutual fund portfolios showing how different market segments work well together to reduce risk and improve returns. He covers the basics of how to select the best mutual funds by providing the most important characteristics to consider for the long run. Furthermore, he illustrates how to pick funds that are in the top decile of performance.

Appel devotes a separate chapter to income investing suggesting short-term bonds with high credit ratings, and current interest flow. In a section on maximizing safety he mentions T-bills, money market accounts, and setting up a bond ladder with wide diversification. He also reviews what to focus on for maximum potential returns, as well as balancing risk and return. A follow-on chapter reviews the keys to securing junk bond yields at Treasury bond risk levels. Another chapter reviews investing in REITs while another covers investing abroad using open-end and closed-end funds as well as ETFs.

Appel favors ETFs as a new way to invest replacing the typical mutual funds. He contrasts the pros and cons of ETFs, the different ETF categories, and how to create and maintain a diversified portfolio. He provides three specific sample portfolios for different types of investors.

The author's market timing approach encompasses both fundamental and technical analysis. On the fundamental side he reviews the P/E ratio, bond yields, earnings yields and provides guidance on how to interpret the readings. On the technical side, he discusses the four year and presidential election market cycles, advance decline line, and new high new low breadth indicator.

Overall, Appel provides readers with a time-tested practical approach to take control of their investments. For those readers that prefer investing using their own skills this book will provide and excellent plan for moving ahead and succeeding.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2001-07-31

I haven't done many of the suggested drills, but simply as bedside reading this book does a fantastic job breaking down critical elements of the game. I've used many tips I learned from it, especially in baserunning, with success. In baseball you can think too little, and you can think too much; this book finds the right level.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for every baseball player.......1999-12-21

Rod Delmonico tells you a lot of things in this book you probably have heared before. But then I'm sure even an experienced coach will find some great new hints. Also, I have never seen so much vital information about how to play the game of baseball put together in one place in such a consice and easy to read way. Rod teaches you basically about bunting and base running. A chapter covering the basics of hitting (again mentioning everything important in just a couple of pages) is included as well. Curiously though the actual hit and run play isn't covered. Only bunt and steal plays, as well as general base running are included. Those are covered expertly though. I will make this book required reading for my players (since it's not too long, you can read it within four hours). I loved the fact that Rod didn't relate any boring stories from his own experience, like many other baseball book authors do, but just put down material you could use directly.

5 out of 5 stars Why sit back and wait when you can make things happen.......1999-06-10

This book is a great guide to an aggressive style offense. As a player I like to take the game to the opponent and make them work. Coach Delmonico shows the essentials to an aggressive offense. I plan on incorporating some of the ideas in this book into my own coaching style. Sitting back and waiting for the big inning can win some games, but aggressive offense can win more games. I recommend it highly to all coaches.

4 out of 5 stars Grump Guys Aren't So Bad After All.......2007-05-01

Summer Shadows, book two in the Seaside Seasons series sort of sneaks up on the reader. It seems a little slow to take off, but then the reader really starts caring about its characters. Abby Patterson survived a car accident that claimed the lives of her husband and her two year old daughter, and since the accident her well-wishing parents have been suffocating her. Now she's renting an apartment from Marsh Winslow, who seems to be very grouchy and touchy, but at least his cottage is on the ocean in Seaside, New Jersey. Then on her first day in town, she witnesses the hit-and-run of a young girl. The only problem is, due to the similarity of the accident that claimed herown child, she has amnesia and can't identify the driver. Unexpectedly, Marsh, of the bad temperment, and his huge beast of a dog, come to her assistance. when Abbey obviously becomes a target of the hit and run driver. The scene is riveting where the hit and run driver has chased Abbey into the ocean shooting at her and Marsh is shot trying to save her. Roper's use of flash backs to delve into the mind of a sociopath is chilling.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent book from Gayle Roper.......2007-05-01

This book was so enjoyable and definitely gave the reader things to think about long after it was finished. Gayle has a real gift for letting us see the hearts of her characters and walk with them on their journey. This is a good read and one that will leave the reader with issues to ponder.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked from beginning to end........2007-01-22

Roper has the unique ability to meld romance, comedy, suspense, and a powerful Christian message into one book. In the summer beach side setting, Abby Patterson is able to overcome the shadows of her past and present disability to discover and fulfill God's wish for her life. As Abby's story unfolds so does the novel's theme- God is our strength when we are weak.

4 out of 5 stars Can it get any hotter?.......2006-12-15

Being from New Jersey originally and having spent many a summer day in Seaside there was a special draw for me in this book. Yet Gayle Roper was able to use that just as a setting. She creates characters that are so believable you feel as if you know them. The interactions between these characters rage from humorous to rage to fear and plenty of other emotions thrown in. I was particularly intrigued at how she used the over protectiveness Abby's parents drowned her in and became the catalyst for her move to Seaside becomes a thing of beauty in another's eyes. I loved watching arguments turn into lover's spats as two people who were determined to see as little of each other as possible end up wanting to see as much of each other as possible. Yet the road to romance is not without its bumps, and Abby seems to be surrounded by nothing but bumpy roads. If you like a little mystery in your romance and love a good plot, well-developed characters and a gripping story I highly recommend Roper's book to you.

    4 out of 5 stars SuMmEr'S sHaDoW's.......2003-04-19

Overall, this was a decent book. Summer Shadows deals with family issues, overcoming health problems, religion, and even has a nice romantic twist (or two) intertwined in it. Characters are well developed so that, when reading about different problems that certain characters are faced with, the reader can almost see the whole situation in their mind thus, giving a better appreciation for scenes whether they are meant to be heart-wrenching or entertaining. There are also many different types of characters in this story. The selection ranges from a stubborn, independent woman to grouchy neighbors to overprotective parents (etc, etc, etc!!!) and each part is played very well.
The main character of the story is Abby. She is in the process of breaking free of the chains (her parents) that have held her in bondage quite long enough, in her opinion. Her overly protective parents feel that Abby cannot survive at all without them there, guiding her every step of the way. These two opinions, being as opposite as they are, clash to a very strong degree when Abby moves to Seaside and in the end, does get her freedom, which she fights so hard for. While living in Seaside, Abby is the witness to a hit and run accident but afterwards suffers from some sort of amnesia and cannot remember the driver of the involved vehicle. The little girl that was hit brings back painful memories from Abby's past, which causes her even more grief over not remembering what has happened. As time goes on, Abby grows an interest in her landlord, Marsh, which cannot be ignored. Why ignore it though, when Marsh has the same feelings for her? These two very different people fall in love and help each other in many ways.
The plot of this story is great, and the ending is almost as great, aside from that the revealing of a villain who should have been discovered at the end was given away too early in the story, thus leaving no big surprise at the end because the reader already knows who is to blame. Aside from that, the book has a strong, interesting ending that will keep readers intrigued up to the very last word.
The epilogue is also enjoyable because it lets the reader know about everything that happens after the end. Leaving on a good note, readers are excited for the next book to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Another great one.......2007-08-14

Love Nicholas Spark and most of his books. This was a good one, easy to immagine what is going to happen, but still a very good love story with some mistery.

3 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this book.............2007-07-23

Okay, so I fell in love with the characters in this book immediately. I cared for them and was interested to see what would happen as the story progressed. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the writing about halfway through. I just did not dig this book....just not enough punch, I guess. I have loved other stories by this author and will try another.

    5 out of 5 stars A great beach read.......2007-07-20

I just finished this book in two days while lying on the beach. I had no idea what it was about- I just picked it up on the best sellers at Books-A-Million (just wanting a book for the beach). I love Nicholas Sparks so I new it had to be good and I was not dissappoited with this book either. If you want a great read with a few twist then this is a great book to read. It will keep you reading and wanting to know more.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm hooked!.......2007-07-04

As an early childhood teacher I don't really read many "grown up" books. Once in a blue moon I have the time and come across a book that really grabs my attention. This happened with this book. I had seen the movie "The Notebook" and when I found "The Wedding" at my sister's house I couldn't put it down. I finished it in just a few days (a really big deal for me). The day I was done I bought "A Bend in the Road." As much as I love Allie and Noah from the other books, this one was my favorite. It takes hold of your heart right from the beginning. This is one of those that you don't want to end. I think the fact that Sparks' stories are set in NC is one of the big draws for me, being from the south myself I'm naturally a hopeless romantic. I finished "Message in a Bottle" this morning and I've started on "True Believer". I guess this makes me an avid reader, well almost. The point being, if you love a love story and a good cry mixed with tons of other emotions....this is a book you'll want to read. Sparks certainly knows how to draw in readers with his vivid details and breathtaking descriptions! It's easy to identify with his characters because at some point we've all been in love and most of us have been burned by our feeling in some way. This story is just a FEEL GOOD love story even though it has a somewhat sad backdrop.

5 out of 5 stars A Bend in the Road.......2007-06-13

This was my favorite book. I have read all books written by Nicholas sparks. The mixture of tragedy and romance was perfectly balanced. I love the way that all of his books teach a life lisson. This teaches to not take anything for granted. At any moment you can lose something that is close to you. Also taeches that while driving, eventhough you may think you are aware of everything that is going on there still can be more that is not visable to the eye. and it may jump out at any moment just as the dog did. Also you must never run away, you must face that reality of life. If you don't face up to your realityyour life may be chamged for the worse just as Brians was.

    Book Description

Countless readers have been delighted by Father Andrew M. Greeley's bestselling tales of Nuala Anne McGrail, a fey, Irish-speaking woman from Galway blessed with the gift of second sight and a knack for unraveling mysteries, and her hapless husband and accomplice, Dermot Michael Coyne. From Irish Gold through Irish Stew! this spirited couple has untangled many a knotty mystery, both at home in Chicago and back in Erin. Now they return in another captivating blend of romance, humor, and intrigueDamian "Day" O'Sullivan is a troubled young man who blames himself for a tragic vehicular homicide he may not have committed. Trouble is, Day's entire family seems to be conspiring to pin the crime on the poor lad, which only leads Nuala and Dermot to wonder who really ran over (three times!) Rodney Keefe in the parking lot of a ritzy Chicago country club. The O'Sullivans are a ruthlessly ambitious clan of South Side Irish, who consider themselves the cream of the Irish-American community. The sensitive Day has always been something of a black sheep in the family---and perhaps a scapegoat as well. But the twisted saga of the O'Sullivans isn't the only mystery to be unraveled. Having stumbled onto the diary of Father Richard Lonigan, a nineteenth-century parish priest assigned to a remote village in old Donegal, Dermot and Nuala find themselves caught up in the closely guarded secrets and scandals of that desolate time and place, where simmering resentment against the ruling English sometimes erupted into violence and murder......Irish Cream is another rich and satisfying concoction by one of America's most popular storytellers.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been two novels.......2006-12-02

I have always enjoyed Fr. Greeley's novels - from the early ones (like THE VIRGIN AND THE MARTYR) through the Blackie Ryan novels and now the Nuala Anne and Dermot series. In the latest series, I especially like Fr. Greeley's portrayal of a passionately happy and happily passionate marriage.

That said, in IRISH CREAM I found myself more engrossed by the historical story of Fr. Richard than Nuala's modern day attempts to save young Damian O'Sullivan from his psycho/neurotic family. As in past books in this series, Nuala and Dermot solve a modern mystery at the same time they unravel some historical connundrum. In this case the modern story deals with John O'Sullivan, a man so determined to control the world's perception of his family that he frames his own son for a nelgigent homicide. Nuala and Dermot discover this miscarriage of justice and set to work righting it.

Meanwhile, Dermot is reading the transcripts of a diary written in the late 1800's by an Irish parish priest ministering to a poor community still suffering from the aftereffects of the Great Famine. Unlike in prior books, this historical tale does not relate in any way to the modern one.

I found Fr. Richard's story more interesting than the modern tale and wish that Greeley had given this fascinating character a novel of his own. I was also struck by the writing style in this section of the book - remarkably free of the Irishisms that can sometimes overwhelm Fr. Greeley's work.

Because I enjoy the relationship of Nuala and Dermot, I will certainly continue to read this series. However, I would love to see Fr. Greeley write something more in the style of "Fr. Richard."

4 out of 5 stars Worth a READ - My Review is a different slant from the other reviews.......2006-10-25

I agree with most of the other reviews, good, bad or otherwise. You have to take this book for what it is, light hearted fare and entertainment without a lot of heavy lifting. SEXUAL ANTICS! Yes, lots of that, surprising that a priest can write all of this stuff. Must hear it in the confessional???????? Anyway, NOT BEING IRISH MYSELF gives me a different slant. Maybe if YOU ARE genuinely IRISH, this will be too much a caricature of Irish folk for you. However, for me, it was delightful, bringing to life the IRISH of the South Side of Chicago. Also, there is a portion of the novel that takes place in IRELAND too so there is a connection between the characters of their home in Chicago and their other former home in IRELAND. This thematic connective device is actually quite creative from a writing perspective I believe and quite ingenius as it helps flesh out the characters. There is one character though that is not well developed and that is the "Mick", the son of Nuala and Dermot. There are off handed references to the boy but you wont get the sense that you know him as a character as you do with the much better developed daughter characters. That is a minor complaint though.

5 out of 5 stars In Spite of short Shrift Reviews it's Super Good Reading.......2006-09-08

Even if his first 3, Nuala Anne, Irish Gold Books were more than exceptional; This is an engrossing story combining some of the good Father Greely's best characters. And surely isn't his the Irish gift of spinning a wondrous story when given the best cast of characters. After Dermot, his precious 3 childre his arwesome fey bewitching Lady Nuala Anne, who not only is sexy but can sing along with the best Irish Folk Narratives, "Alive/Alive-Oh, and Sweet Molly Malone," there are two well trained Irish Wolf Hounds!

The counterpart Family, a well-known South Chicago Irish brood of John Patrick O'Sullivan starts as the breeding place for the scape-goat son as Damian (Day) Thomas O'Sullivan. The complex story is under-scored by a companion story of the yet-to-become famous of Father Dermot Michael. All-in-all Sullivan's young son Day becomes the surprising hero and budding artist who joyfully specializes in painting dogs and children in solo, duo, & trio!

    4 out of 5 stars Greeley biased.......2006-05-21

Andrew Greeley is entertaining once you get by his extreme and wrong headed political biases. He has never met a
republican that is honest and never met a crooked Democrat. There are both. His bookswould be even more interesting if he understood that fact.

3 out of 5 stars Not Fr. Greeley's Best Work.......2006-02-10

I fear that the brillant Nuala Anne series is falling into decline with the latest installment.

The "historical" and "modern" mysteries do not play out parallel to each other as well as they have in the past 7 novels. The "historical" mystery/ plotline is sketchy at best with little development in the plot or characters. It is certainly not written in "Ned's" free flowing journalistic style, rather is written by an Irish cleric who studied in Spain (WTF?) whose biggest concern is denouncing ancient custom and superstitution. On the other hand the "modern" mystery/plotline is just as good as it has always been but with the addition of a new character. Cindasue will be the destruction of the series if the good Father continues with her; she adds nothing to the story and the "cute mountain accent" is horrible just to read. About halway through the novel, the perspective is suddenly switched to Nuala (from Dermot) which hasn't been done since Irish Gold with "Nuala's Voice" but not with nearly as much success. The continued development of the Coyne Clan is certainly interesting and I like Socra Marie being cast as the "little terror" (although I wonder about "la terroista" what's with the sudden Spanish interest?). I also like Damien "Day" O'Sullivan and hope that Greeley will keep him in future stories. In conclusion, it is a good novel but not to Fr. Greeley's usual standards.
