Brennan Manning wrote The Ragamuffin Gospel "for the bedraggled, beat-up, and burnt-out," the marginalized folks to whom Jesus ministered: the children, the ill, the tax collectors, the women. In other words, the ragamuffins. Manning understands better than most that behind our facades of order and self-assurance are inadequacies that can find healing only in Jesus. While the powerful and religious elite challenged him, Jesus embraced and healed and fed the needs of the ragamuffins. Jesus delivered love, healing, and, most of all, grace.

Grace is defined as "the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God." But, as Manning points out, we have "twisted the gospel of grace into religious bondage and distorted the image of God into an eternal, small-minded bookkeeper." In reality, God offers us grace immeasurable. Brennan Manning gently encourages us to embrace that grace in the face of our greatest needs. And Manning certainly knows whereof he speaks, having taken a journey from priesthood and academic achievement through a collapse into alcoholism. Manning came face to face with his need, finally abandoning himself to grace. And he invites us now to join him in a life of grace.

Manning is without doubt one of the most eloquent writers on the subject of grace because he openly shares his own pain and struggle to help readers deal with failure and inadequacy. And he sweetly challenges them to do the same. --Patricia Klein

Book Description

A Furious Love Is Hot on Your Trail!

Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this newly repackaged edition—now with full appendix, study questions, and the author’s own epilogue, “Ragamuffin Ten Years Later,” Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a “furious love” that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God’s grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock—the “ragamuffins.”

Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?

Most of us believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.

Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.”

Brennan Manning ’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. Now with a Ragamuffin’s thirty-day spiritual journey guide, it will change yours, too.

Story Behind the Book

The world assigns value to people using measurable standards. Someone is a successful student if she receives As. Someone is a strong athlete if he runs five miles a day. The Lord, however, knows nothing of standards. The Ragamuffin Gospel was inspired by Brennan Manning after he discovered firsthand what it means to live by grace instead of performance. His words bring new life and sweet refreshment to Christians who are tired of never measuring up.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Grace defined!.......2007-09-23

Manning simply and eloquently defines and describes the Amazing Grace of God's salavation that is available to all of humanity...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2007-07-23

So often Christianity is viewed as judgmental and legalistic and the heart of Christianity is lost. Jesus was the friend of sinners and accepted and encouraged the downtrodden and those rejected by the religious elite. Manning so eloquently brings to life the meaning of Grace. He paints numerous word pictures to help illustrate what Grace really means.

Reading this book was like taking a fresh breath of air. I would recommend it to anyone, especially anyone struggling with believing that God truly loves them just as they are, in spite of all their terrible sins.

5 out of 5 stars Always Good News.......2007-07-08

Brennan Manning does an excellent job of reaching out to those of us who feel we have so miserably failed to live up to our calling. He vividly demonstrates the good news once again that Jesus came to save sinners and reflects the incredible, unconditional love of his Father. For anyone who needs to hear the good news again, this is the book.

4 out of 5 stars Re-Luthering.......2007-07-04

In the epilogue to Ragamuffin Gospel, "The Scandal of Grace," Manning informs the reader that one of his Roman Catholic critics told him that he "had out Luthered Luther." I don't know that you can "out-Luther" Luther --- but Manning is at least close here.

If you let it, this book will take you through a path that not many people go on. You'll go to Spiritual AA.

Manning, a recovering alcoholic himself, describes the faith life of a Christian as really only a recovering sinner ever could. He is upfront about his disease. He knows that he isn't God. He knows that He doesn't even deserve to sneeze in God's direction. He shows the most comfortable Christian that they are still a sinner even though they have a nice family and go to church every Sunday. He goes even farther. He makes sure that you know that if you're not actively involved in being empty, in being a ragamuffin, that you're not living the Christian life as it was intended to be lived.

In short, he tells you what a Ragamuffin is - it's a sinner-saint. It is someone who has no right, no claim, and no worth who is passionately and wildly embraced by a savior.

The book is a great choice for a devotional read. It will bring not only a new perspective on your current place before God, but it will show you that your ultimate place is with God, singing in the joy of His free grace.

It is a message of grace for anyone brave enough to consider themselves one of God's ragamuffins.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-06-30

I absolutely loved this book. It's true that he says a lot of controversial things, but it's very thought-provoking. It caused me to take a long hard look at my spirituality. For a long time I felt like I didn't measure up to God's expectations and I was constantly frustrated because I never felt like I was good enough. Now I know I'm not good enough -- and it's okay! I am loved anyway. :) Brennan Manning does a beautiful job illuminating God's love.

5 out of 5 stars It's Perfectly Normal.......2007-08-18

I love this book! I purchased it for my almost 11 year old granddaughter.

It speaks frankly and is very easy to understand. The drawings are anatomically correct without being lewd. The material is presented in a "no nonsense" way which promotes understanding but is not judgemental.

Wish I had this when I was a young girl.

The real test will be my granddaughter's comments when she reads it.

5 out of 5 stars Honest, relaxed & absolutely educational.......2007-08-06

I, too, was really surprised by the scattered negative reviews of this book. My husband, daughter and I have read less than half of it together, but have enjoyed its friendly, informative style and already the parent-child lines of communication are solidly set and wide open.
I purchased the book several months ago for my 8 yo daughter in anticipation of questions I could already feel coming. Not a month afterward I discovered our pediatrician has a copy in her office and recommends it to other parents. I admit to being a little apprehensive about showing my 8 yo some of the more graphic drawings (they are cartoonish, but still correct), but we have been able to share many deep conversations that started with one basic question.
This is not a book you hand over to your child and offer to answer any questions later - share it, read it, discuss it together and enjoy knowing you have reinforced reliable information, a positive self image and a strong relationship with your son or daughter.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learning Tool.......2007-05-28

WOW - this is a fabulous book - I found it at my local library when searching for something balanced and informational for my husband to show my 10 year-old step-son.

I think the illustrations, while accurate, are not lewd or pornographic, and quite frankly I'm stunned by the negative reviews of this book. The fact that it has been listed to be banned amazes me.

I believe that the best deterrent to unwanted teenage pregnancy, abortion, STDs, etc., is educating young people about positive human sexuality.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book if you believe in giving complete information.......2007-05-07

I highly recommend this book. It is informative, interesting, presents an up-front and broad perspective, and leaves the moral message to the families. My boys, now 9 and 13, found it fascinating and poured over it for hours. A great resource for both the facts and for reassuring the kids that they are, in fact, normal - and that there is a very wide range of both normal and healthy: a necessary message for children in a phase where they believe that they are the only ones who...

5 out of 5 stars Three of Three: For Middle High Youth!.......2007-03-13

This book came to me through the Our Whole Lives faith and sexuality curriculum. It has two partner books, for older age groups. All three are excellent, and have been "tested" with several friends' families.

I highly recommend this book, and its "younger siblings," It's So Amazing and It's Not the Stork. Check out all three, then look for a church or organization that offers Our Whole Lives!

"Hanging Low, Keeping Cool," "A Hairy Question," "Feeling Private/Feeling Guilty," "You Don't See Any Blind, Crazy Morons Around Here, Do Ya?"

Can you guess what all these chapter titles are about? Give you a hint: everything you ever wanted to know about (but were afraid to ask)... You got it, boys and puberty! Author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded and updated their sensitive, detailed, often witty guide for boys on the cusp of adolescence. To help boys realize they are not alone in their concerns about masturbation, body hair, growth spurts (or lack thereof), female puberty, voice changes, perspiration, shaving, and sexuality, this classic guide is written in a down-to-earth, nonjudgmental style and filled with answers to the many questions boys have as their bodies begin the transformation into adulthood. As a result of thousands of reader letters over the years, as well as the ever growing body of information about puberty in boys, the third edition has been revised to include more detailed discussion of penis size (the authors get more questions about penis size than all other topics combined), updated information on acne treatment, expanded sections on eating right, exercise, steroid abuse, and weight training, and important facts about STDs, AIDS, and birth control. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, and diagrams, the guide is designed with the understanding that some boys and parents will want to read it together, while others will want to pore over it on their own. Either way, this resource will prove to be incredibly useful for boys and their parents over these strange, exciting years. The companion volume for girls, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls is a must-read as well. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars Growing Up.......2007-08-11

A very good book that has answers to questions that some parents have a hard time explaining and talking about. Worth getting and keeping on your book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars It depends on the child - great for my son!.......2007-07-10

I got this book on recommendation of a friend who read it with her son at age 10.

I read a prior reviewer's comment that no pre-teen boy would ever read this book on his own. My husband and I introduced this book to my son when he was 11 (right before the start of 6th grade). My husband and I pre-read the book and then I casually gave it to my son, asked him to read it and to ask us any questions. At first I noticed him glancing through it and skipping around from chapter to chapter. Whenever he had a question, he'd come to one of us - but not too frequently.

Two months into middle school, my son seemed to be reading the book all the time. I am assuming it was because of the "older" discussions, etc. the boys were having. I also thought that he may be trying to figure out if the information he was getting from friends at school was correct. My son initiated several discussions with us about information he read in the book. I don't think he found any of the terms too clinical. In fact, I believe the book gives the correct terminology and some common or slang terms as well. (i.e. "wet dreams") I have always taught my son the correct terminology for body parts, etc.

When my son's school (all boys) had their health seminar at the end of 6th grade, he took the book to school with him - I believe to share it with the teacher (a female).

All in all, I think the book was very informative and gave my son the truth.

I would suggest that parents read it first to determine if their sons can handle it. I cannot imagine giving my child this book on his 10th birthday - he was definitely NOT ready then. But my friend did just that and she, her husband, and her son developed weekly discussions on it.

4 out of 5 stars Good conversation starter........2007-05-17

My husband and I have always been very open with our son regarding sex and body issues, in an age-appropriate way. He is now nearly 11 and we got this book for him. He giggled a bit about it but when I let him know I'd be glad to talk about any of the chapters with him, I was a little surprised that the first thing he wanted to talk about was the section on girls..... being a boy, we'd been filling him in on what to expect from his own body but forgot that he'd be curious about the "gentler sex". It's been a nice tool and we have left it on the bookshelf in his room. He can peruse it at his own pace and when he's wondering about things, knowing that he can always come to us with questions about anything.

I think it's an informative book that is, like my title suggests, a good conversation starter. It's not a substitute for talking with your kids about sex and the things that happen during puberty and beyond.

We're very happy with this book and it fits our parenting style.

5 out of 5 stars Moms need this! More than dads. Maybe more than sons........2007-04-19

Dads may know all this stuff already, but moms don't have a clue! And moms are the ones who actually explain male anatomy & physiology to their sons. We're the ones who spend the most time with young boys and have the most opportunities to teach. Since we don't have first hand experience, we need factual information.

I have two sons, and learned only from this book, how boys develop and what is typical. I was shocked to learn this information, until you consider that, as a girl, I had no opportunity to learn. And this topic can be so uncomfortable for men, that they don't know this information either. They may be relying on only their personal experience or viewpoints.

I actually consider this one of the most important books a mother can read. This is more important for a son's future self esteem than all those books about the problems of rearing toddlers that mothers are encouraged to read. I feel so strongly about our collective ignorance as mothers that I had to write. In fact, I'm giving this book as a gift to other mothers. Moms need to read this book. Learn something.

5 out of 5 stars Boys need this.......2007-01-13

Boys may be too shy to ask their parents about these issues. This book helps to open the door for further discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Paula Deen & Friends Does Live It Up!.......2007-07-14

Hello! I rarely write reviews of the products I purchase online. In fact this is my FIRST, lol! However, this book I feel deserves a write up and I hope it helps buyers out there~ I LOVED the book! I find the recipes well written and easy to follow. Not complicated to cook nor are the ingredients hard to find! MOST IMPORTANT, after making a few of the meals, THEY TASTE FABULOUS! That's what it's all about! The book is written in a very straight forward, down to earth manner with down home southern hospitality thrown in. I cook for a living. I am a foodie! I have over 300 cook books, (YES that other famous one with the peacock guy...) and like that one, this is also one of my favorites, right off the bat; I knew it before I even tried any of Ms Deen's WONDERFUL recipes! There are many "trade" secrets or cooking tips included, if you don't know them already! Many of the recipes are very unusual and unique; not found everywhere! (Now today, that's important with the slew of cookbooks out there!). I suggest you go out and buy this cookbook NOW, AT ONCE, NO QUESTIONS ASKED! You won't be disappointed in it, I feel! Lastly, THANK YOU MS. DEEN for your wonderful book, you are making me FAT! But "never trust a skinny cook" as the saying goes! Scott in New York City. parkslopescott@aol.com

5 out of 5 stars Paula Deen & Friends.......2007-07-09

Fun cookbook and nice reading on the life of Paul Deen and her family. It shows what a warm and friendly person she is. The recipes are also good.

3 out of 5 stars Paul Deen is a good southern cook, but..........2007-06-20

Paula Deen is a good southern cook, but I was a little disappointed with this offering. It doesn't seem to live up to her other products. Maybe it is because that I don't entertain much, and certainly not in a formal way, but this doesn't fit our lifestyle or cooking preferences.

4 out of 5 stars Great menu suggestions.......2007-06-02

This book provides great menus for a variety of entertaining. The recipes are easy to use and are food that is familiar to everyone - nothing so exotic that you have to go to a speciality store to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars HEY YA'LL ! THIS COOKBOOK IS KITCHEN FRIENDLY!.......2007-03-02

If you watch the Food Network, then Paula Deen is no stranger to you. I remember never missing an episode of her show years ago before Paula became so popular. Now, she is everywhere...and deserves every minute of the exposure. Good for her! I still never miss a show; I even like the reruns on Sundays.

Rightfully so, I had to have her cookbooks. Paula is a cook that everyday Americans can relate to. Remember cooking shows on PBS where the cooks always made food with ingredients that they probably never sold in your local supermarket, that is, if you could even afford them? The Food Network has changed that these days, and Paula is at the top of the list for wholesome foods that anyone can make.

Her Living It Up Southern Style cookbook is a quick pick for a fast meal or for party planning. The recipes are easy to understand and easy to plan for. You probably have most of the ingredients already in your pantry. I like the layout of this cookbook too. There's not a lot of reading so the recipes don't get lost. They are also divided by occasion, so it's easy to find what you need if you are looking for suggestions.

Best wishes! Best dishes! And definitely one of Paula's best too!

Book Description

Third Culture Kids speaks to the challenges and rewards of a multicultural childhood; the joy of discovery and heartbreaking loss, its effect on maturing and personal identity, and the difficulty in transitioning home.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Must read" foranyone living outside your home Nation!.......2007-04-08

If you are raising children outside your home Nation, this book will help you understand and assist your children with their unique experiences living in the invisible "third" culture. If you or your spouse grew up in a Country foreign to their parents, this book may help illuminate emotions and behaviors that never quite made sense before (especially from the perspective of those of us who always lived in the same house!). This book is in english, but it is not about Americans only, but anyone from one Nation who spend several years or more of childhood in a second Nation. Should be a staple in every military, ambassadorial, or mission complex library!

5 out of 5 stars it's an autobiography for tcks.......2007-03-23

I am a tck and I have met Mrs. Van Reken. She is brilliant, and her book helped me through many of my adolescent identity struggles. I have passed it along to friends and parents of tcks and everyone seems to agree that it is both interesting, thought-provoking, and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The missing link........2007-02-11

If you grew up in another country and have always felt a as though something is missing in your life, this book holds answers.

5 out of 5 stars Putting it into words........2007-02-08

I recently found out about this book and the term TCK. As an American who spent the majority of the first ten years of my life growing up in Scotland, it felt so comforting to find out that there is a whole community of people out there like me, and that our common experiences have a name. Also, as someone who never thought I'd read another "textbook" after graduating college, this book has definitely changed my mind. It's a great balance of expert language and personal story, perfect for TCKs or ATCKs just discovering who they are, non TCKs who share their lives with TCKs, parents of TCKs, and any educator or professional in an international setting. I consider this book to be the definitive publication on my life experience, and those like me.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-01-10

Anyone who is a TCK or ATCK or has kids who are TCKS needs to own this book. It does a lot to help us understand what and why we do what we do, and the best ways to deal with our issues. It is a form of support that for the most part is hard to find anywhere else.

Book Description

First published to media acclaim in October 2003, Trading Up revealed how today's middle-class consumers are seeking higher levels of quality, taste, and aspiration than had ever been possible before—in their choices of cars and clothing, vodka and beer, golf clubs and dolls, and much more. The book identified a major opportunity for entrepreneurs and innovators, managers and marketers, in every category of consumer goods and services. Now Michael Silverstein and Neil Fiske have thoroughly revised this BusinessWeek bestseller with new research and new insights into the still- growing phenomenon of trading up.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Insight, but Could Be Shorter.......2007-08-15

This book is a great reference to trends in our society and the new buying habits. There are great "buzzwords" and alot of statistics quoted. However, as you read on, there is a great deal of repetition and I believe that this entire book could be summarized in 25 pages.

4 out of 5 stars Wish I had more time............2007-03-30

I have only just started to read the book, but my time is limited so I haven't really gotten to enjoy it. But what I have read so far is great!!! I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in what makes Americans tick!

5 out of 5 stars Consumer goods startups must read.......2007-01-07

I've been working for years to develop what Silverstein and Fiske describe as New Luxury products. I wish I had this book in 1999 when I started! While I have come to the same conclusions and I find that this book validates my concept and strategy like no other, the real value for me has been the better organization of the concept and suggested processes than I've been able to develop on my own. When you read the acknowledgments you'll see a huge list of people and resources that few of us entrepreneurs have available. This gives the book incredible depth and value.

Unfortunately the authors never mention ethnographic research although they are doing that science in an ad hoc way. They may not be aware of the applicability of ethnology to market and product research. Sure, ethnology was developed for studying remote tribes but mix this with neuroscience and environmental behavior research and business gets interesting.

A major feature of this book that we rarely see in biz books is the chapter at the end that explains their sources in a more useful way than the typical end notes. It would be nice if more authors would explain their sources and reasonings rather than just list sources.

5 out of 5 stars Retail Marketing 101.......2006-10-03

This well written book basically outlines the consumer market as it is today: that most consumers, while buying basic necessities at discount retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target, don't mind paying a little extra for luxury goods they feel are worth it in some way. It's a fascinating read for anybody interested in the retail business or in marketing. As somebody who is currently in marketing and who worked at Bath & Body Works for a number of years (of which one of the book's authors, Neil Fiske, is the CEO), it was interesting to learn why the store went from a country, home-spun theme in the 1990's to the upscale, urban "apothecary" it is today. Though Bath & Body Works was never used as a case study in the book, the concept of trading up is certainly applied to the store (thanks to Fiske's leadership).

Besides its commentary on the current retail market, the book presents an insightful view of our modern American society. We live in such an affluent society and presented with so many choices that we have the luxury to "trade up". Even those with relatively low incomes can trade up on a few items. It's all about the person's priorities and how they choose to distribute their money.

All this affluence and trading up has led to a higher quality of life for all. While those with low incomes are able to buy decent products at low prices at Wal-Mart and Target, middle and upper income individuals can shop at those same stores and use the extra money they've saved to buy higher-end goods.

My one caveat about the book is its overabundance of marketing jargon. Somebody outside of the marketing and business field may not understand some of the terminology. But the book doesn't seem to be written for the average lay person in any case. Just thought I'd bring that up for what it's worth.

4 out of 5 stars Trading Up.......2006-09-30

Did you ever wonder why it is becoming so much more difficult to find products that either aren't luxury or low-end? The authors explain how consumers are selectively trading up for products that they value and trading down in other areas, leaving the middle. The authors use case studies to make their case. For example, some consumers are willing to shell out $2000 for a washer and dryer. Not any washer and dryer but the latest side load offering from Whirlpool. Considering that you can get a washer and dryer for $400 to $600 this is quite a premium. The authors explain how companies if they can provide a ladder of value for a product can entice consumers to trade-up, even for something as humdrum as a washer and dryer. The authors back up their concepts with marketplace facts as well as socioeconomic factors such as the increased number of women in the workforce and the state of the family.

5 out of 5 stars We all need help sometimes.......2007-07-27

I gave the book to my daughter, to assist her with her daughter who is 9 years old now. The book is great. It covers all the things a little girl who is becoming a young teenager needs to know about her body changes and life in general. Wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Didn't like Sex talk.......2007-06-22

Although the book discusses it tastefully, I could have done without the section on Sexual Intercourse. That makes it less appropriate for the younger set (9) who are just learning about themselves let alone an interaction with another. The book is written in a manner that keeps the subject interesting and the true life stories are a hit. After raising three adult children, I was looking for a book for my younger children that just discussed the physical changes at this age. Things like why it may be good to wear deodorant, take more baths/showers while stressing things like feeling comfortable with your body and that other people touching it is not appropriate. I think a good book but stress its use for older girls.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-01-10

This book is great. I work with kids ages 9-11 and they're at that age where curiosity becomes overbearing. Mavis Jukes touches on hard to discuss topics and makes learning about scary things easier. At the same time it is not too detailed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect first book for maturing young girls.......2007-01-09

I bought this book for my eight year old daughter, but haven't given it to her yet. It is definitely appropriate for young girls, as it explains the changes to expect (for girls only) during puberty but does not go into reproduction and other mature details, which I believe would be more appropriate for older girls. It is written in an age-appropriate tone and encourages girls to take care of their bodies, reassures that their feelings are normal, etc. I do wish it did not have quite as much detail about the use of feminine products, which is why I haven't given it to her just yet, but overall it is the perfect book for young ladies who are just beginning to "need to know."

5 out of 5 stars perfect for pre-teen.......2006-12-29

While there may be a spot or two that I would like to have omitted, the reality is this is the best book I have seen for the pre-teen girl entering puberty. As with anything, parents should communicate directly with their kids, not just give them a book. For those who have a hard time, this book will do a good job all by itself too. My daughter (who is an avid reader) thinks this is a really good book. It explains all the facts of things she and her friends are going through, and will go through, in an easy to understand format with illustrations. It's a reference that can be referred to again and again as girls evolve.

Book Description

This delightfully illustrated "chapter book," geared for eight-to-twelve year olds, tells the charming tale of five family members (each with a different sensory processing challenge) and their naughty dog, and how they get in sync after a tough day. The book is designed with the action of the story in larger print for younger readers to read or hear. Explanations of sensory processing disorders are woven through the story in regular type, for proficient readers to linger over at leisure.

This wonderful book from the best-selling author of The Out-of-Sync Child and The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun, is a must-have for every family challenged by sensory processing problems.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Good Enoughs Get In Sync.......2007-08-03

It was very interesting as the children in the story shared what activites help them get in sync. What was relaxing and what elements of the activities were useful to relaxation, organization etc. Although I did not notice the age group recomendation I will keep the book as it is useful to the parents and grandma and will become my grandson's book when it is more level appropriate. I say that because he is very advanced when it comes to stories and reading.

4 out of 5 stars What a Help!.......2006-06-29

While my child is too young to read this book on his own, I know it will be helpful for him in the future. As a parent of a child with sensory issues, I found that it helped enhance my understanding of his issues immensely (e.g, what HE is experiencing on a daily basis and how it might make him feel). The more insight and understanding a parent has on these issues, the better you can help your child. I highly recommend purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars A fun book for kids with SID and extended family members..........2006-06-21

We really enjoy this book. It helps our daughter understand what is going on with her senses, and why we need to do heavy work acivities and other parts of her sensory diet. It is also the book we have shown her grandparents because it touches on a lot of definitions related to sensory integration, and gives examples of characters with the traits. I highly recommend you buy this for your child with SID and people who spend a lot of time with your child.

4 out of 5 stars The Goodenoughs Get in Sync Review by Lisa Angel.......2005-03-03

The Goodenoughs Get in Sync by Carol Stock Kranowitz was a great book to read because it so helpful in the classroom. Many times we think that a child is just being mean or annoying when in reality it is a sensory disorder and the child can not help it. I felt the definitions provided to certain words such as sensory under-responsivity, auditory defensiveness and visual defensiveness, to name a few, were extremely enlightning. My son has a friend who has a sensory disorder. I didn't know about the disorder until he came over to spend the night. When it came time to go up the stairs to my son's bedroom he began to freak out. Of course, I called his mom and she explained everything to me and I began to understand. This is a wonderful book to recommend to her. I also enjoyed reading about each family member and how the sensory disorders varied so much. However, each had their own issues to deal with, they really stuck together as a family and supported one another. Even the dog had sensory issues. I would really recommend this book to teachers so that they have better sense of some of the behaviors that go on in the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars The Goodenoughts Get In Sync.......2005-01-17

It is NOT AMAZING to me that Carol Kranowitz has done it again! I know how LIFE CHANGING her book: The Out-of-Sync Child was for me and for my son! That book made LIGHT BULBS go off in my head and I was able to read it inserting my son's name on every page after I had read page number two! Her resources brought HOPE and took away so much self-doubt, guilt, fear, sadness, frustration, etc...! All of her books are something I could put my hands around, my head into and helped open my heart! Her books CHANGED my life and changed "WHO" my son is FOREVER! Doctors, parent, teacher, grandparents,etc...need to read this book as well and share it with the children they are trying to understand/help! Perhaps they will see themselves on these pages?

5 out of 5 stars Great Bible Cover.......2006-11-06

I bought this Bible for a friend who was being deployed to Iraq. He was really excited about it because it's light weight and very durable. I highly recommend this Bible to anyone who wants a small Bible with a great cover. The only issue might be that there aren't any study notes or footnotes though if you're looking for that kind of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Strong and Study for heavy usage........2006-07-05

This is the other bible I am currently reading, this is the one I carry in my backpack. It has a very study metal shell, thus it's name, it has a magnetic clasp to keep it closed. I pretty much killed a bible about every year to year and a half by carrying it around in my backpack every day. This bible solves that problem. It is small, compact, and very durable. The metal Bible comes in a variety of colors and designs I have this green one with the dog tags and my wife had my initials engraved in the dog tag before giving it to me as a gift a few summers ago. There are currently, 2 Silver designs, black, orange, red and hot pink. The NLT - New Living Translation is also a great reading edition, both this and the TNIV are newer translations based on modern scholarship and are very accessible to today's readers.

Note: The Silver, Green and Orange are old stock and are NLT version1 the red and vlack are the NLT Second Edition. Next reprint of the others will be the revised NLT.

5 out of 5 stars red metal "Ignite" Bible.......2006-04-01

I bought two copies of this for Confirmation presents for two young men in our church. Love this product. Love the look of it. Love carrying this when I travel and the translation is provocative. Love the simple, readable style. Also enjoy the list of verses and stories in the back. Makes for quick reference. Like the red color and the title "Ignite." How could anything be more appropriate for Confirmation.

5 out of 5 stars A Bible that doesn't shout "religious"!.......2006-03-18

The book is so 'cool' that you can carry it around and no one knows it is a Bible. In fact, people come and say, "what are you reading, that is a really cool looking book"!

What mysterious condition are these now grown-up girls talking about? Ah, yes, puberty! With scads of personal stories and an abundance of useful, detailed information about girls' changing bodies and feelings, author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded their guide for girls on the verge of change. First published in 1983, the bestselling classic has been revised and updated several times over the years to keep up with ever evolving facts and wisdom about puberty in girls. In this third edition, the authors continue their straight talk on the menstrual cycle, reproductive organs, breasts, emotional changes, puberty in boys, body hair, pimples, masturbation, and all the other fun, scary, and interesting things that go along with growing up. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, diagrams, and honest, sensitive, nonjudgmental information for the young girl, the revised edition also addresses the new scientific facts about when a girl actually begins puberty (earlier than previously thought), advice on "female athletic syndrome," eating disorders, unwanted attention because of early development, and information on eating right, exercise, AIDS, STDs, birth control, and so much more. A welcome, reassuring book for parents and daughters, designed with the understanding that some girls and parents will want to read it together, and some will want to read it on their own; without a doubt, though, all will benefit. Got boys? Don't miss What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

The best book on puberty for 9-15 year old girls completely updated for the first time in 12 years! Selected as a "Best Book for Young Adults" by the American Library Association--The classic puberty education book for 9-15 year-old girls (over 500,000 copies sold), now thoroughly updated and freshly redesigned for the first time in 12 years. Now for the first time since the medical journal Pediatrics published its news-making, large-scale study indicating that puberty begins in girls even earlier than previously believed, Lynda Madaras has thoroughly rewritten, updated and expanded her classic book to address the younger girl and her concerns. As before, in age appropriate-language, the book covers the body's changing size and shape, breasts, the reproductive organs, the menstrual cycle, pubic hair, and includes a full chapter on puberty in boys. Reacting to the thousands of letters Madaras receives from kids all over the world, with a multitude of questions, as well as with new research data, she has made changes as follows:
* more discussion on when a girl will begin puberty
* more on the emotional and physical development and how that compares to other girls of the same age. Also what to do with unwanted attention because of early development
* new sections on diet, exercise, and health, with help on avoiding weight problems and eating disorders; avoiding unhealthy uses of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco
* discussion of the " female athletic syndrome"
* more practical advice on products from treating acne to menstruation protection to sports bras
* internet resources that will guide the younger and older girls to more explicit, appropriate-to-their-age information on romance, sex, contraception, STDs, pregnancy, and multiple births.

Over 1,200,000 copies of Lynda Madaras books sold!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and informative.......2007-01-06

When I was nine, I was given this book along with "the talk". While talking is certainly something parents should do with their children to inform them about sex, they should also give them this book. It clearly explains sexuality with a main focus on puberty using small words and fairly large type for easy reading. By the age of twelve I had mostly outgrown this book because of the focus on puberty, so this book is best given earlier. This book also contains a short chapter on what is happening to boys at this age, which was also immensely useful.

As a short aside, I would like to mention that I am horrified by some of these reviews. If you wait to give this book to your daughter, or refrain entirely because it has an illustration of male genitalia, or because it mentions masturbation, or it doesn't promote the religious message of you have to wait until marriage, or that homosexuality is wrong and a sin, that is a bad decision. Children already know about sex from their classmates, and they don't know correct information. Some kids are already having sex at twelve. And if you wait to give this to your child, they won't know how to do it safely. I know you think, "oh, my ________ would NEVER do that". They may. And if they don't by age twelve or thirteen, they still will probably have done something sexual by the time they are sixteen or seventeen. And by the way, if you don't let them see an illustration of male genitalia, they will look it up. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative.......2006-10-22

I read this book in fifth grade, and I still remember it to be interesting and informative. Some reviewers have mentioned that it provides too much information for younger readers; at age 11 I personally had no problems with it. Nationwide the trend has become to provide less information in regards to puberty, sex, etc. It's important that teenagers and to-be-teenagers are well-informed, and there is nothing in this book that should be disturbing or traumatizing. As the author suggests in the book, any reader who finds the information to be too thorough may simply skip over the parts irrelevant to her. In addition, readers may always come back to the book at a later date and more mature age, but there is good information in it for the pre-teen set as well.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this book as a factual and informative read. It's also well-written and interesting enough to read in one day.

3 out of 5 stars Way too much information for a young girl.......2006-08-23

I bought this book with the intention of giving it to a girl who just turned 12. Both her mother and I agreed it was way to much information and the illustrations were too graphic for a 12 year-old. The intent of the book is commendable but some parents may take issue with the author's opinions on the subjects covered. It might be better for an older girl but parents/relatives should read the book carefully before handing it over to even a young teenager.
