Applying it is a whole different ballgame. This book just explains different situations when to bluff and how to go about doing it from the image your table sees you as. All pros bluff with timely fashion and this author is giving you a foundation as a pro himself how to do it yourself, all you need is courage. But like everything in life practice!practice!practice! If your a tight player thats sick of getting picked on by Mr bully this is the book to get. Overall I know skill will always outweigh luck in the long run, but it always helps to have every resource at your disposal in every situation and that is a good thing.

Book Description

For players hungry to win hold'em and Omaha tournaments, the world's greatest tournament player gives specific advice on how to get to the final table where the big money is made-and then how to win it all! Players learn how to build up enough chips to make it to the final table and give themselves the best chance of winning the title, the trophy, and the money, using the same strategies that have taken T.J. Cloutier to the championship table of more tournaments than any player in the history of poker. Thirty-five chapters discuss key concepts: stack sizes, antes and blinds, table position, opponents styles, chip count of players, number of tables remaining, and tons of other concepts found nowhere else.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Write a storybook next time, T. J........2007-06-06

I love watching T. J. Cloutier play, so I jumped on this book with anticipation. Basically, it's a long discourse in which he takes every opportunity to tell you to play good hands and do your best to get paid off for them, and never stop studying your opponents.

Although the author uses tournament theory throughout, he never particularly explains it, or ties it in to his exposition, except in the discussion of when to go all in in the big blind.

He breaks down the exposition by number of players left and stack sizes, but his advice for playing the big and medium stacks is almost indistinguishable. He does give some good advice on which players to attack and which to stay away from, but it's slightly spoiled by the
superstitious injunction, repeated two or three times, to stay out of the way of players "on a rush." If you always do that, you'll miss your chances to stop someone's "rush," now, won't you?

There's a chapter where he goes over the critical hands from the 2005 WSOP $5000 No-Limit Hold'em event. This is the high point of the book, but if you compare the commentary here with the kind of analysis Harrington gets into in Harrington on Hold 'em: Expert Strategies for No Limit Tournaments, Vol. III--The Workbook (Harrington on Hold'em), it's pretty airy.

What one does get out of this book is a sense of how much patience one has to apply, and (at least vaguely) what standards to use on one's hands. For some players, this will be a needed tonic.

In many places throughout, the author admits he's just pointing to something he can't teach directly; he can give you an idea just how well-developed a top player's intuition and sense of timing are, but give only a couple of hints on how to get to that point: paraphrasing, they would be "study your opponents" and "remember your mistakes."

The advice in this book is tailored for big tournaments with relatively deep stacks. In the tournaments most of us play, we'll bubble out if we try to follow T.J.'s advice without adjustment, which is exactly the problem the book sets out to solve.

I do wish all my opponents would read this book, though, especially the ones who keep overplaying KJ and drawing out on me.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible. .......2006-09-22

Don't believe the positive reviews, this book is awful. It's rambling, imprecise, and purely anecdotal, the worst example of the unhelpful "play the player" style of the lesser poker books. Over and over again TJ's grand sum total of advice in all kinds of different situations is to "learn your opponents" so you can "make moves" and "then you can really play poker". And that is it, the entire enumeration of the "strategy". Nothing about how to go about actually -learning- your opponents, nothing about -moves- to make, nothing about his way of -really playing poker-.

The scenarios he sets up are the same thing you have heard a hundred times elsewhere. Anyone who has read other books (or played tournaments) will already have a firm grasp on basic beginner logic like, "if you're seriously short stacked, you've got to gamble". Just compare that to the in-depth examination of M and Q done by Harrington in his series.

Anyone who hasn't read other books (and doesn't have much experience) will not find advice in this book that will improve their game.

There is ONE actual concrete move described in this book, and that's the fact that when there's a preflop raise, TJ likes to reraise to steal the blinds + the original raise, which allows him to keep even for a few orbits. The rest of this book is at the level of advising you to "get your money in with the best hand".

The final insult in the book is to recite the action of ESPN-televised knockout hands from the 2005 WSOP $5000 NL event. Great. But there's barely any _analysis_ of the hands, what was done right and wrong, what Cloutier might do differently or emphasize. Just a flat recitation of what was shown on TV. (I can't say there was _no_ analysis. Cloutier does at one point add the insight that "sometimes you just have to make the decision to go for it.") Again, compare to Harrington's deep analysis of D'Agostino vs Ivey.

Just an awful book from an otherwise great player, a cheap attempt to cash in on the televised NL tournament poker craze, can't hold a candle to Cloutier's earlier (highly regarded) works with Tom McEvoy or the absolutely brilliant new standard for NL tourneys defined by Harrington or the very crisp and insightful ring game advice from Phil Gordon.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth reading.......2006-08-28

Like most of Cloutier's books, this reads like a transcript of conversations with him. It is not that well organized, and more specific examples would be helpful. BUT, you learn about the thought process of one of the best. It is hard to imagine too many serious players, who would not benefit from reading this book and thinking about the ideas. I probably won't re-read this book as often as Harrington or Gordon's, but it will be on the active part of my poker bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Inside TJ's Mind.......2006-06-07

I have almost 30 books on Hold'em. Other than Harrington's books which are excellent, almost none put you really, and I mean REALLY inside the mind of the author/player (Erick Lindgren's book does a good job of this though). I've had the good fortune to have met TJ a couple of times, and ask him some questions. But in How To Win The Championship he brings you into his thought process, to the point where he even says that some more mathematical players may not agree, but he does it so-and-so way and here's why. The information is non-stop, with essentially no fluff. But be warned, if you are just a beginning player who hasn't played in a tournament before, he doesn't go into basics and it doesn't tell you what to do at the beginning or middle stages of a tournament. This is really for a bit more experienced player. His book essentially starts off at the point where you are 1 table before getting into the money and goes on from there to heads up. Being a tournament player myself (I don't play cash games much at all), this book is perfect. I better understand why I've hit walls in the past and how I need to adjust my play to win or at least get into the top 3. I get in the money a reasonable number of times in live tournaments but have real trouble breaking into that upper pay echelon. He gives great advice on how not to flame out when you just make it into the money but not into the bigger money. Really key points that I haven't seen in other books. I realize that at some point we all need to stop buying all these books (yeah, learning never stops but 30 books? I must be a junkie!), but I really can say if you want to improve your tournament play, TJ's book is a must. His writing style is like he's talking to you about exactly what he does and why (also what he doesn't do and why you shouldn't either).

Chapters include:
* When you're one table away from the money
* When you've made it to the first money table
* When you've made it to the second money table
* When you've made it to the final table
* Six-handed at the final table
* Playing three-handed and heads up at the final table
* Several chapters on tournament strategies and some other thoughts.

As you can see, this book's content is pretty specific and I haven't seen this in other books. In fact, in many of those chapters, he further breaks them down into if you are a short, medium or big stack, because the size of your chip stack greatly influences the types of situations that you should get involved in. It's like you've got a coach you can talk to as you continue to advance in the tournament...especially useful for those who haven't been into the money or final table before or keep seeming to make mistakes and missing the big money.

Overall, highly recommended and it absolutely will pay for itself, whether you play in live or online tournaments.

5 out of 5 stars Sure helped me.......2006-03-31

This book was key in my decision to emphasize Omaha Hi-Lo over Hold-em. Since reading it I have had a final table at the Bicycle Casino Mini Series of Poker and a few tournament wins at PokerStars, Absolute and True Poker. What was impressive to me was how he supported his opening hand recommendations with computer simulation, as I had used simulation tools in Scrabble and learned much from them. There may be a weakness in the area of postflop play, but the opening hand section is a big winner. The recommendations on how to play all-high hands were very good too.

2 out of 5 stars poorly written to the extreme.......2005-09-23

Mike cappelletti's book has got to be one of the worst books I've ever read. First of all, he is a very loose player. Play A3 anything? Raise with the 3rd best hand to knock out a 2nd? With a limits most people are playing at people typically will stay in with the 2nd best hand. He also tends to repeat himself quite a bit. How many times do we have to hear a loose game is when 5 or more people see the flop? On top of this he is extremely disorganized. For example he is talking about flop types before preflop play. He also uses too many random charts. Finally his hand examples are terrible. Yes, it's great to know that Hartford is the insurance capital, what the rules are in Tampa, and where you have played, but it's not relevant to o/8. No one cares where you were for each hand example Mike. The bottom line is I cannot recommend this book to anybody without a case of Advil, because your head will be in severe pain after you read this book.Good luck finding advice in this scattered mess. Someone has got to make a good low limit o8 book real soon, because if this is the best out there I'll figure everything out by myself the hard way.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2005-01-18

This book isnt worth its small price. The book is disorganized to say the least, making it difficult to read. Furthermore, there is little real usable information, especially for those who are new to Omaha 8. Whereas a good author would write a solid chapter about starting hands (for example), the equivalent in this book is 7-8 articles on a subject, apparently culled from Card Player Magazine. This leaves a lot of questions unanswered and topics unaddressed. Though some of the individual articles arent bad, its no way to write a book. Based on what I have heard and the other books I have read by 2+2 publishing, I wish I had bought the Ray Zee book instead. Bottom line: This book might be ok for someone who has played a little bit of omaha and wants to learn a little more, especially playing recreationally, but if youre serious about learning omaha 8 or taking your game to the next level, look elsehwere.

3 out of 5 stars Into the winner's side.......2004-11-09

After one reading, I turned a $40 weekly loss into a $40 gain. This was my first book on Omaha Hi Lo and with the dicipline to follow the guidelines, you can win too. However, you must study another source to learn profitable tournament rules. I do agree with the flaws identifed in earlier reviews: a) somewhat disorganized, b) too much print about "other forms" of poker, and c) leaves some common playing decisions unanswered. But there is enough solid advice to allow you to start getting actual playing time without it costing too much.

4 out of 5 stars If you know starting hands already, this book will help you........2004-04-01

Cappelletti is too loose in his starting hand recommendations in my book. That being said, the rest of the material is very useful. I had already played a great deal of winning O8 before reading this book and I had read Zee's book, but was still able to find some great insightful advice to apply to my game when playing. I especially liked how he got into the differences in play between high flops and low flops and the push and pull hands. This book is very informative and will help your game, just don't play as loose as the author does preflop.

The passion for gambling dates back to ancient times, with poker being one of the oldest and most popular forms. Author Michael Stelzer became fascinated with the game and convinced that his knowledge of math could help him understand and beat the odds, decided to investigate its complexities from a mathematical standpoint. Letting the chips fall where they may, he formed his own astute conclusions on poker's risks and rewards, and his findings make up this terrific little handbook. Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker, which is one that good poker player can't afford to be without.

Whether you are a novice or an expert player, you'll find lots of fascinating tips and tricks to get the upper hand on your opponents. Stelzer suggests that the games are actually not stacked as highly against the player as you might think. Any good player can win big money on poker and walk away with those winnings, he found, and this discovery so buoyed Stelzer's own confidence that he began hitting the casinos himself to play.

Lucidly and elegantly, Stelzer gives the reader a concise history of the game as well as those all important poker basics. His thorough analysis of the various poker hands, as well as their accompanying mathematical proofs, is straightforward enough so that anyone can benefit.
Readers will learn playing and betting strategies, such as play or fold decisions, hand derivations and game strategies, how to manage a bankroll and more. Encompassing years of personal research in casino poker games, Stelzer's book is packed with enough information to help anyone play better and enjoy poker more. Knowledge is power, and with this handy guide, any reader can have the confidence to win.

5 out of 5 stars As Reviewed by booksurge Publishing Company.......2006-10-30

In his new book, Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker, engineering Ph.D. and mathematician Michael Stelzer shares simple playing and betting strategies that guarantee poker players will leave both tables and tournaments as winners.

Providing a brief history of poker and basic playing strategies, Stelzer's approach does not require players to have any previous skill or experience, nor does it involve learning a complicated system or counting cards, making it practical for players of all levels of experience in both casinos and private games.

Stelzer's study of poker began as a hobby based on his extensive mathematics background. The discovery that many poker games offer players odds as favorable as 50/50 inspired Stelzer to test gaming strategies of six popular poker variations. Using computer simulation, Stelzer was able to establish strategies for determining whether or not a hand should be betted on based on desirability.

Stelzer encourages responsibility in betting and gambling, emphasizing that Mathematical Strategies is not a "get-rich-quick" book. However, players who follow these tested probability methods will find that they can minimize losses by folding undesirable hands while capitalizing on virtually guaranteed wins.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Poker Book I Own.......2006-12-27

This is actually the second book of Mr. Steiner's I've read. The first was his introduction to economics textbook at college.

I'm not surprised other people found the book valuable as well, because of the rich quality of the writing, and the focus on the specific goals of the book - the local, amateur, high stakes game. However, I've got a strong academic background which includes a Master's Degree in Finance, so the academic, logical approach was very welcome to me.

The quality of the detailed instruction is unusually high. Mr. Steiner puts most of his most important conclusions in a context that dramatically increases the value of the lesson.

Despite Mr. Steiner's academic background, his poker book is unsually easy to read, and I enjoyed it. I particularly liked his anecdotes about specific events that had happened to him either in local games, or when he was in the military.

In short, the author is the kind of guy with whom you know you'd enjoy playing cards, even if you lost a few dollars doing it.

4 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable, Good to have in your Poker Library.......2006-12-01

This book is for people who like to play Poker for "medium" stakes (not nickel-dime-quarter). It's an enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2005-07-13

its a good book, starts off pretty dry and relatively simplistic but gets better after the tells section. The characters he uses help and remind you of people you find in your average game. the only problem is 1/3 of the example hands he uses end in you or your opponent getting quads... considering this book is based on a lot of probability that doesnt really work out. a decent read, worth looking over

4 out of 5 stars A Real Value. .......2004-10-24

This is a very good book that is quite well written; however, since it is from 1996, it's rather dated. The author, of course, does not make any mention of the internet which is the vehicle through which most of us play poker nowadays. He also could not have foreseen the extraordinary success that amateurs have had against professionals which is why he stated that amateurs usually lose their money at the World Series of Poker. In the last two years Greg Reimer and Chris Moneymaker thoroughly disproved such a notion. Yet the author should not be blamed for historical eventualities he could not anticipate. He has written a highly functional and readable guide for the weekly, or Thursday night, poker game. It's ideal for beginners as his explanations of the game (and its many variations) are clear and concise. His knowledge of strategy and tactics is notable. A big plus at the end is the annotated bibliography which I read a couple of times.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Serious Home Games.......2004-08-18

This book is unique in that it covers strategy and tactics for play in
serious home games instead of a casino or online. (Some differences
are the blind/ante structure, the number of players, and how many
players enter each pot.)

An excellent selling point is that it covers all of the serious poker
formats: Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud, 5 Card Draw, and 5 Card Stud.
(The section on Draw is quite good!) It includes hi/lo versions of
some of these games, including with a declare. It also covers limit,
no-limit, and pot-limit. It does not cover any of the crazy or
wildcard games that are popular in nickel-ante home games.

The included example/problems are an excellent way to learn. Each is
answered and accompanied by a good explanation. Various player
stereotypes are used throughout the book to stage the problems. The
stereotypes are unfortunately one-dimensional, but do remind the
reader to play the player instead of just your cards.

If you play serious home games, this book can easily suffice as your
only poker book. If you go to a casino or play online, this book will
help plenty versus no book at all.

4 out of 5 stars Respectfully Disagree.......2004-06-06

I disagree with the other reviews on this site. This book is targeted for the tournament novice. If you are out there winning thousands of dollars in poker tournaments, then you obviously don't need this book. However, for someone who has no idea how a live poker tournament works, this is an excellent reference guide. Yes, some of the advice falls under the category of "duh" (e.g. "Fold marginal hands"), but I've played in several tournaments and many live games, and have made a lot of money off of the people who don't follow the advice outlined in this book. Notice the subtitle is "How To Win at Low Limit Poker." The key word is "Low Limit." This book is not for high rollers. However, it does provide sound strategies that, when coupled with experience, can produce winning results. I've won two online tournaments employing some of the basic strategies in this book. I'll admit it is a bit pricey for the content, but it is a cheap investment if you make the cost back with a winning hand or two. This book coupled with Larry Phillips "The Tao of Poker" forced me to look at how I was playing and my decision making process. What might be common sense advice to one player may be news to another.

1 out of 5 stars Useless!.......2004-02-08

I agree with the previous critic. Anyone looking for specific tournament poker tactics with example hands will be disappointed. The book amounts to nothing more than the type of common sense, but practically useless, advice that a father might give his young son before his very first tournament. Anyone who finds this book insightful instead of thinking "Duh!" at every turn of a page, should probably not play in poker tournaments just yet, since all the information given is purely and exclusively common sense advice.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough content for the price.......2003-07-25

This book is very poorly written. It is as sickening to endure as a high-school pep rally. "You can do it! Keep trying, you'll get there! Rah Rah Rah". There is a lot of useless blather and no real content or strategy for playing in poker tournaments, just lists of general and vague advice. It is mostly just a bunch of quotes from professional players taken from other books, magazines, etc. I don't think the author interviewed any of the people she quotes in the book, and if she did, it is not apparent. Also, this book addresses mostly re-buy tournaments. Freeze-outs are mentioned in passing, but not really discussed. Then again, nothing in this book is really addressed anyway. If you are a beginner do what I did: Go to your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee and read this thin tome (140 pages or so) in about an hour and put it back on the shelf. If you are an experienced tournament player, just get the coffee and skip the book.

Book Description

The King of Las Vegas and America's premier sports gambler reveals a powerful program for breaking all the rules, beating all the odds, and achieving all your dreams.

In The King of Vegas' Guide to Gambling, Wayne Allyn Root of Spike TV's King of Vegas(tm) demonstrates why it is vital to take risks in life-whether in the casino, on the playing field, or in the boardroom. Root lives an American dream: He makes money watching sports on television. In fact, as CEO of GWIN Inc., America's only publicly traded sports-handicapping firm, Root is a self-made millionaire with hundreds of thousands of sports-betting clients and fans. In this book he reveals the spiritual principles behind his consistently winning hand. Turning the popular conception of the casino denizen on its head, Root shows readers how to concentrate on the risks they take and to cultivate tranquillity in the face of life-defining, stressful moments. Bringing a unique contrarian approach to gambling, Wayne Allyn Root states his maxim of never following the masses and always taking the lead in life, and guides the way to navigate successfully the many gambles life offers.

5 out of 5 stars NEVER THOUGHT A BOOK COULD CHANGE MY LIFE.......2006-09-01

Mr.Roots contrarian philosophy and unique application of gambling strategy to life and business is right on the mark, and something never before seen in a gambling book. This book could actually CHANGE PEOPLES LIVES FOR THE BETTER, IT HAS MINE.I commend Mr. Root and his message, and highly recommend this book to GAMBLERS AND NONGAMBLERS ALIKE.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with usefull information.......2006-08-31

I've been a client of mr. Root for many years. When I heard about his new book I couldn't wait to read it! He did not let me down. The king of vegas guide to gambling is a book full of unique gambling wisdom.

Wayne's honest, heartfelt story of his long journey from a butcher's son in a blue collar town...to king of vegas is a true testament to hard work, committment, tenacity and the end result- the american dream. You never find that kind of inspirational and motivational business wisdom in a
gambling book. I give this book 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars I want Wayne's World!.......2006-08-31

I'm in awe. I'm amazed about just how much one person knows about life...risk...and winning. Thru Zen,Family or Spirituality I learned an entirely new perspective about life. Then he switches gears and tells me about risk....and how to have less risk thru Contrarian thinking and Value Investing. Now I'm ready to go the opposite way after I hear someone say "it can't miss"!
And finally, there's betting rules and a betting clock to maximize my betting opportunities. I didn't know that!! But what I enjoyed the most is how he took me thru the World Series of Poker. I not only feel like I was there but I learned so much I'm have many successes on the internet. His writing style is second to none during this fast paced chapter. What an incredible piece of work. This is a smart read for all risk takers, sports gamblers and poker players. And a must read for everybody else even if you only want to see how one man can combine success with family and business. Thanks Wayne Root!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you for this book!.......2006-08-30

I just finished Wayne Allyn Root's book on the Zen of Gambling after receiving it as a gift from a friend of mine to whom I had recommended the Millionaire Republican by the same author. This book was a lot of fun since good books on casino gambling are few and far between and I have to admit I like to partake on my trips to Vegas. This book is more than just a nuts and bolts "how to play". Wayne is a very colorful individual (if any of you have read the Millionaire Republican or heard Wayne on the radio can attest) who gives some interesting insights on what it takes to be a winner. I won't give away the material, but its more than just knowing when to stay and when to hit in blackjack or what numbers to avoid in craps. With this book, its more about the mindset or "Zen". If you've ever had a tuff streak at the poker or blackjack table, or playing those "office pools" (haha) on Football Sunday, then this book can teach you to ride out the tuff times and maximize the runs. Finally someone has written this book!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the usual poker how-to.......2006-03-02

_Play Poker to Win_ isn't the usual kind of poker strategy book. It's about 60% anecdotes (the anecdotes are the usual mix of hilarious Slimmagisms; two or three are repeated from _Amarillo Slim in a World of Fat People_, because they are worth repeating) and 40% poker advice. The poker advice is often over-specific. The reader has to pick through to find the useful advice, and then thoroughly analyze what Slim is saying, working out how to generalize it enough to actually use it. You definitely would not want to use this as your first or only poker reference.

This is offset by the occasional gem of insider thinking, and the exposure to the way Slim thinks about hands and games. If you just read this book with a lively and open mind, you may very well get infected with a winner's attitude, which is worth far more than the price of the book.

Besides, any book that casually calls Former World Champion Phil Hellmuth, Jr. "soft as butter at the poker table. ... only half kidding[ly] ..." (p. 154) has got to be worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars The book that got me excited about poker..........1999-01-20

Play Poker to Win is filled with many of Amarillo Slim's famous anecdotes, as well as some advice about the game itself. You can go into this book not understanding much about the game, and after 1 or 2 reads, play a decent hand.

Not great if you are looking for a book on playing poker really, but good if you want poker humour, and action.
