Book Description
"LUCID IN EXECUTION, BREATHTAKING IN SCOPE AND HEART-RENDING IN EFFECT--A REDEMPTIVE WORK OF ART. . . . Lee Smith has done more than write another novel about the South. She has broken through the grotesque surface to the underground spring, the music of Scrabble Creek, and the effect is stunning--a beguiling, gentle prose formed by an honesty so severe we are brought to our knees. . . . This novel has a grand and singular purpose, to clothe the spirit with flesh. In this, Lee Smith succeeds."
--The Washington Post Book World
"A compelling journey into all matters southern and spiritual . . . . Set in North Carolina and Tennessee, we follow young Grace Shepherd from a cabin in the bucolic poverty of Scrabble Creek to independence as a single woman. Stops along the way include seduction by a half-brother, a failed marriage, motherhood, the loss of her son, residence in the aptly-named Creekside apartments in Knoxville and a job waitressing. . . . While Grace's path may be a journey many of us would not choose to undertake, we have to raise a small fist of jubilance to Grace for having survived."
--The Boston Sunday Globe
"Ms. Smith possesses a fine talent for creating narrative voices, whether the ungrammatical eloquence of a hill-country healer or the educated affectations of a Richmond gentleman."
--The New York Times Book Review
"Lee Smith patiently woos us into double vision. . . . As her fans know, [she] has one of the truest ears for the speech in her part of the world."
--Los Angeles Times Book Review

Finding independent identity.......2007-06-08
This book was a good light read, but I must say that I was disappointed that the protagonist never did seem to find an independent identity. She moved from life in reference to father immediately to life in reference to husband to life in reference to male companion. The ending, if meant to be a break from that succession was not convincing, or well developed enough. Poor Florida Grace did not seem to find her saving grace.
Riviting tale about a bizarre Southern subculture........2006-06-13
Saving Grace by Lee Smith is the tale of Grace Shepherd, a woman whose life is largely defined by two Southern primitive Christian ministers--Virgil Shepherd, her egomaniacal, sociopath philandering father and Travis Word, her pious, inflexible, straight-laced, repressed husband.
Brought up in abject poverty by her neglectful father Grace has no life outside her immediate family and the charismatic, serpent handling congregation of her fathers in rural North Carolina. Her life is her father and his religion--though Grace does not truly or successfully fit into either world. As her life's journey her fathers abuse and negligence will cause most of her siblings to abandon the family and her beloved mother to commit suicide. Eventually her father will totally abandon her and she will turn to--and marry--her rescuer, Travis Word. A noble man in many ways, Travi's considerable advantage in years and near total sexual repression will lead Grace to stray--to disastrous effect.
In spite of all this, Grace manages to find some bearings, raise two successful daughters and develop enough courage to go back "home" and confront her roots and personal demons.
This is a riveting book in many ways. Grace's personal story is as captivating as it is unsettling. The insights into the strange Southern primitive Christian world are mesmerizing. The cast of characters--and it is quite a cast of characters--that populate the novel are enormously engaging. The writing is exquisite.
Some of the other reviews alluded to this being among Lee's less successful novels. If this is here bad stuff--an assessment I find ludicrous--I can hardly wait to get to the good stuff.
A really great novel on many levels.
Brilliant and well-researched.......2006-01-07
A brilliant and refreshingly unusual read... Much darker than her other works with characters that are well-developed and believable. Some sections so accurately described (the Randy years) that you would swear Ms. Smith has lived another life. Very accurate with regard to fundmentalist Christianity in the 40's and 50's. Great read for a long weekend!
Very Well Written.......2004-07-21
This story is not for everyone, but the book is well written and admirable. If you have a taste for southern literature then you must spend some time with Lee Smith and I cant think of a better place to start. Read the first two pages and if you are not pulled in by the fine writing then this probably isn't for you. If you're uncomfortable with poor rural snake handling "Christians" then you might pass on this as well.
Sorry to the author.......2004-05-08
Lee Smith is my all-time favorite writer. I have read all of her books except for her newest novel. This is my least favorite by a long shot.

Great collection.......2003-06-14
Anyone not familiar with Lewis Grizzard ought to be in for a treat reading these books. I grew up reading Grizzard in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and I remember laughing out loud at the breakfast table so, so many times. Grizzard was a terrifically funny man, southern to the core and wrote basically about what he knew best- life in the south. Grizzard was more than just a funny guy, however, he was a real writer, a true talent. This collection makes me realize how much I miss him. You don't have to be southern to appreciate Grizzard, however, no more than you'd have to be from the Midwest to like Garrison Keillor. This is Grizzard at his best.
Solid Gold Grizzard.......2001-04-10
Lewis Grizzard is to southern humor what Elvis is to rock n roll, a legend that will live in our hearts forever. "Down Home Grizzard" is an excellent read as well as a beautiful memory to the late king of southern humor. The man is just plain funny.
Book Description
The incomparable Grizzard shares anecdotes of his beloved homeland. No other contemporary humorist knew the South so well, loved it so passionately, or wrote about it so vividly.
Customer Reviews:
Lewis Grizzard writes for the Good old Boys.... and Girls.......2004-05-07
Lewis Grizzard was, like his friend Weyman C. Wannamaker, a Great American. His writing celebrated his Southern Heritage and is full of stories about faithful dogs, good country music and women who looked so good they'd make a preacher break out in a sweat. He often accompanied his beloved Georgia Bulldog football team, and reporting from New Orleans at the 1980 Sugar Bowl he wrote that he had just experienced a turtle soup that was so good it couldn't have been any better if you had known the turtle personally. He was to the written word what Jerry Clower was to the spoken, and I don't think it's a coincidence that when Lewis branched off into stand-up comedy in his later years that his style seemed most reminiscent of the Big Man from Mississippi. Lewis loved his momma, loved his country and loved his culture, and he wrote about the things he loved in a way that if you didn't love them too, at least you could understand why he did. He is missed.
Great "feel good" book for Southerners........1997-03-30
It is truly refreshing to read a book about Southerners by a Southerner who laughs with us not at us. He joins us in laughing at the Yankees!
This is a short and sweet compilation of some of Lewis Grizzard's best newspaper columns. One hundred seventy pages of pure, unreconstructed bliss. It touches on his pet peaves and treasured memories, including food, animals and relatives.
Truly a gem, I read this great little book in one sitting. Rest in peace, Mr. Grizzard. I hope to see you in Dixie Heaven.

If you are Southern you can't live without this book!.......2006-05-15
I love this book and the courage of Michael Grissom for writing it.
"The Confederate soldiers were our kinfolk and our heroes. We testify to the country our enduring fidelity to their memory.
We commemorate their valor and devotion. There were some things that were not surrendered at Appomatox. We did not surrender our rights in history, nor was it one of the conditions of
surrender that unfriendly lips should be suffered to tell the story of that war or that unfriendly hands should write the epitaphs of our Confederate dead.
We have a right to teach our children the true history of that war, the causes that led up to it, and the principles involved."
Senator Edward W. Carmack, 1903
Excellent.......2006-03-19
Excellent book...well written, painstakingly researched, and extremely accurate. Read this book and you'll know why Southerners still don't trust Yankees and you'll understand why the "War of Northern Aggression" is still being fought today.
Good, But Could Live Without It.......2003-01-29
In reading Mr. Grissom's book, I do think he may have gone a little overboard in making sure we, as readers, knew of his Southern pride. I am Southern, very proud of it, proud of what we tried to accomplish in THE war, & I don't care who knows it. And, I display my flag proudly. But to go on & on, I think it was a little over done. Also, for one who takes so much pride in being Southern & having knowledge of the war, as Mr. Grissom makes sure to tell us, I would like to point out a glaring error in on page 158, pertaining to the re-election of Lincoln. The books states, "What a pity the Democrats were denied victory on November 8,1864. With it might have come the end of the War and no ensuing Reconstruction nightmare, but Lincoln's oft-used and well-timed victories upon the battlefield secured for him the presidency that November. JULY HAD BROUGHT VICTORY AT GETTYSBURG AND THE FALL OF VICKSBURG, followed a little more than a month before the election by Sherman's capture of Atlanta-that action taken after much prodding by the embattled president." That would give an unkowning person the idea that Gettysburg & Vicksburg were fought in the summer of 1864, when actually they were fought in the summer of 1863. Many things had transpired since those two battles had ended, including the battles of Chattanooga, Chickamauga,& all the battles of the Wilderness campaign. Plus, Grant was already entrenced at Petersburg. Another thing, was it essential that we know when a certain person was a member of the Masons? Did that make them a better general? I think not. Note: Neither General Lee or General Jackson were members.

The Southern Handbook.......2002-06-24
Grissom takes a stand for Dixie!
This book should be required reading for all Southerners and those who desire to understand the Southern psyche. It is all right to display rebel pride and be proud of the Old South. The truth shall set Southerners free.
This book is continues to be so popular that it is still only available in hard back after being released in 1989.

Book Description
Dr. Martin's keen analysis, informed by a life's work as literary critic and theologian, reveals the central action of O'Connor's stunning fiction - the violent breaking-in of grace into lives barren of the awareness of God. He links this consistent theme of her work tothe shape of her own faithful and cross-filled life.
Usually seen as a preeminent Catholic fiction writer of the twentieth century, O'Connor's work has set the standard for how serious writers must address God's salvific actions while maintaining the highest standards for literature. A kind of faithful Catholic counterpoint to James Joyce, O'Connor's work is of enduring even classic value.
Dr. Martin's larger argument points out that only fiction with a passionate religious vision has a chance of enduring, thus consigning, as Lionel Trilling once did, most liberal fiction to the remainders table.

Very Helpful.......2005-04-19
Unless you can appreciate the Christian view of The Fall and Redemption, Flannery O'Connor's works may be just too over the top, too senseless and too depressing. In his small, very readable book, Dr. Martin not only shows how O'Connor unmasked the devil but also helps left the vale from the reader's eyes.

It is a GREAT book!.......1999-05-05
I had never heard of Grace Lumpkin until a friend of mine took a Southern Women Writer's course. She suggested I read To Make My Bread. The book outlines the struggles people from Appalachia had to contend with while trying to reform labor problems. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the formation of unions in the South.

Praises for Ms. Griggs Wings of Grace.......2007-05-13
If you are looking for a book with a rich history of a past life, then this book is for you. Ms. Griggs spins a tale of mystery, intrigue and romance. I just could not pput it down. This would be a wonderful read on a nice rainy day. Get lost in Wings of Grace, you will not be dissapointed.
Did I miss something?.......2006-07-26
Not impressed at all. Too wordy, too elementary, and too flat. I enjoy books that create images, that causes you to use your imagination, and that stir emotions. This book did nothing for me. Usually I am very leery of books that do not subscribe to "search inside" which allows me to read an excerpt. Took a chance this time and was sorely disappointed.
Enduring Faith and God's Grace.......2006-03-17
Lena Patterson was able to put her past behind her and lead a life that did not remind her of her negligent and absent mother along with the bad memories she had concerning her. Instead she held on to her grandmother's wisdom and the gift she gave her to pass down to her own daughter one day. Only Lena had no idea that the very thing that she held precious would cause her mother to return to her life.
What Lena did not come to realize until after the fact is that an invitation to visit New York to see a lawyer would change her life in a good way. Her past would definitely catch up with her present and change her outlook on the future when it came to family and the ties that would bind her forever with those who helped to form the person she would become. These ties would include research that Johnnie Mae Taylor was doing to help an elderly woman she met while collecting information for a novel she was writing. This would come to inadvertently change her life as well, and that of her soon-to-be husband, Pastor Landris. Times and events would put Pastor Landris, Johnnie Mae, Lena and Maurice (her daughter's boyfriend) in New York on the morning of the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. All four of them had appointments to be in one of the towers at the very time the planes crashed into the buildings.
Even in the midst of the attacks and the events that put all four of them at the Twin Towers, God's grace prevailed and all was not lost, but a new tie formed. All were involved in the end result of what God had for Lena in the form of a relative she would never have known about named Sarah Fleming.
Griggs did a wonderful job fusing together the lives of these people and through their troubles and struggles brought "Wings of Grace" to an end most fitting the saying, "what is done in the dark will come to the light."
