2 for 1.......2007-08-12
You have two great contemporary artists combined in this book.....I plan to buy it again as I gave it to a friend who is a new grandmother.
Life Doesn't Frighten Me .......2007-05-21
This is a great book! This book is a good starting point for conversation with children in helping them talk about what might frighten them. The artists (both Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat) both have created a unique book for all ages.
Undecided.......2007-04-22
The pictures are abstract looking and dark in tone. The book makes reference to; ghosts, bad men fighting in the dark, and cougars in the park. I'm not sure my 3 or 5 year old children had thought up these bad things on their own yet. While reading them the book I felt uneasy about the dark pictures and scary references to things they may not have even thought of before. I'm still undecided if it will be helpful in convincing them that they don't need to be afraid of life or if it will convince them that life is pretty scary and they ought to be afraid! There is one reference to 'having a lucky charm up her sleeve' that protects her from the bad stuff and also allows her to walk on the ocean floor without having to come up to breathe. Those are both useless defenses in the real world so the book doesn't offer any real reasons to not be scared of life.
Art Appreciation For All Ages---.......2006-11-19
This book is truly for both parents and children. The cadence of Angelou's poem is one that appeals to kids of all ages, even if they don't initially understand it's meaning. The artwork in it's 'stick figure form' can be appreciated by all who enjoy the complexity of Basquiat's work as well as children relating to it's color and elementary presentation. It's one of my favorite gifts, from baby showers to adult parents. If you appreciate art and culture this book is one to have in the home as well as gift to a friend.
Pure Bosh.......2006-07-13
What a deep, deep woman this Maya Angelou is. At least this book ADMITS it's for little kids, unlike a lot of her other work.

The Art of Maya: An Introduction to 3D Computer Graphics
ASIN: 1894893131 |
Book Description
An Introduction to 3D Computer Graphics
Maya is a 3D modeling, rendering, animation, and paint software package that delivers all the tools and features 3D artists need to produce animation and visual effects on the computer. From feature films to interactive video games, Maya lets you play the role of director, actor, set designer and cinematographer as you build, render and animate digital characters and scenes.
In The Art of Maya, every page is full of diagrams and illustrations that show you how to build and manipulate geometry, skeleton joints, deformers, particles, shading groups, lights and cameras. The diagrams describe these computer graphic concepts in a way that will help you understand how you can use Maya in your own work.
This book is an excellent resource for all Maya users and includes an introduction to computer graphics that will help people new to the world of 3D animation. The book finishes with articles that outline how Maya was used in actual productions for film, television, and interactive games.

Just a catalogue.......2007-09-11
I'm an Animator and an Animation/VFX teacher and I find this book like an illustrated catalogue (printed on high quality paper) of what can you do with Maya. It goes through the production proccess of animation in a VERY general way. Recommended just for newbies and summer courses.
for people with money to burn only.......2007-01-05
boy, this book takes me back. sophomore year of college this was a "required" book--thanks, teachers, for forcing us poor (literally!!) college students to shell out $60 for what could essentially be information shown and talked about in 45 minutes of class time. all this book does is explain how maya is great (i agree, maya is a great program...but i don't need a $60, glossy, nicely printed REQUIRED book to tell me that!)
You can literally learn everything in this book by googling for information.
Worthy for those with some previous experience..........2004-03-27
If you're looking for an in depth detailing on how to use Maya this book isn't for you, I'd suggest reading the Maya Saavy series instead. As hobbyist Maya user for the last two years I did find this very interesting though. Unlike many technically oriented books, it visually illustrates the different parameters of the tools and methods. The examples are vivid, large and well labeled. Such as the paint effects section, you can see the difference in choosing tube length and the possibilities you have by applying pressure sensitive strokes. The back is filled with case studies and the various ways Maya is integrated into daily CG work, such as the classic Bingo animation or the morph targets used in Vampire the Masquerade game.
I recommend that users with some degree of Maya experience, that are visual learners give this book a chance. Do NOT expect to learn how to deal with the interface or skin a character, purchase a book more specialized for modelling, creating shaders, etc..
Just what I needed to start using Maya.......2004-01-22
Before I purchased "Art of Maya" I looked through it at a local bookstore. I was impressed with how clearly it laid out a series of quick tips and techniques. As others have noted, it is not a "manual" nor does it claim to be. But, it shows many important techniques that a new user to 3D and Maya can get going on creating with Maya in a relatively short period of time. In many instances, the techniques shown helped clarify areas of operation that I did not understand via the built-in tutorials that came with Maya. I still have much to read in this book. I highly recommend it.
the contents is not suitable for the title.......2003-09-19
the printing is very beatiful, the cover is attractive, but
thier is no wide explanation for the ideas,no depth in the concepts, you can name it dictionary of maya not art of maya.

ASIN: 0782141714 |
Book Description
Maya Character Animation is a one-of-a-kind book featuring more than 800 pages of full-color, step-by-step, heavily illustrated Maya instruction. It was written with beginning and intermediate Maya animators in mind--students and professionals who have already familiarized themselves with the Maya interface and basic Maya techniques. Topics covered include subdivision and polygon modeling, subdivision surface mapping, subdivision surface character modeling, NURBS modeling, facial expression, binding characters, character setup, and nonlinear animation. Maya Character Animation also features in-depth coverage of Deep Paint 3D, a premiere texture painting program.
Customer Reviews:
Really good!.......2004-03-13
Well, I must say that this book is very very good. Nice tutorials, some are dificult, but with some practice, you're there!
If you want to learn caracter modeling, this is it! and also forget the "inside Maya 5"...that's really is NOT for begginers :D
Good information horribly presented.......2004-03-07
This book is in dire need of an editor, preferably one with Maya experience. While it is obvious that Mr. Choi posesses a vast knowledge of Maya, his skills at communicating this knowledge are severly lacking. Grammatical errors abound, and his prose is often repetitive and confusing, if not downright incomprehensible. Many of the images are utterly superfluous, and sometimes they even contradict the text. Also, on a number of occasions, the information given is just plain wrong. Going through the 800+ pages of this book was an utterly frustrating exercise, and as such, I have already advised several friends to stay away from this book.
THIS BOOK IS GREAT... READ IF YOUR PLANNING ON BUYING.......2003-12-16
MAYA Character Animation by Jae-jin Choi is a book that covers a huge amount of information and advanced techniques. This book is not a good choice if you're still a beginner but it's not so hard to understand either. It is exellent if your intermediate. It does have some good new tricks for advanced users.
The book covers polygon, nurb and subD modelling although you should know about modelling a little bit before reading. It covers facial expressions, skin binding, *good* rigging, texturing, some rendering and of course animation. It has very valuable information scattered around on topics like fluids, fur, and new things on Maya 4.5 that of course persist on Maya 5. It even has a tutorial on Deep Paint 3D. Full color and filled with pictures that aid the text perfectly. You get to work with different characters and many settings. The information and data on the CD is a big ++.
Not to go any further I would like to say that everytime I open this book on ANY page I learn something new. Im a 3D veteran and a Teacher on Character Animation that came into 3D from the world of comic pencilling and inking and this book I can tell you is one of the few books I find useful and believe me... I'm close to compleating all the book list you'll find here at Amazon.com... IF YOUR SERIOUS ABOUT MAYA BUY THIS BOOK!!! (check my list for other great books)
Great book for the intermediate animator.......2003-10-13
Maya Character animation is probably one of the best books I have seen so far dealing with character construction. While it is not for beginners, if you have a solid knowledge of Maya, the Maya tools and a general understanding of how it all works, this will take you to the next step in building your animations in a professional manner.
I am an animation student at the Columbus College of Art and Design and this book has been a great help in reducing my character modeling time as well as showing me different ways to assign control surfaces so that my characters movements are easier to direct and look much more natural.
Another good thing about this book is that it does deal with issues such as assigning textures to your characters and shows you multiple ways to reach the same goal so that you are able to work with the style that suits you the best.
All in all, a definite must have in any serious animators' library and it should be put right next to the Maya 4.5 Bible
Not for beginners, but a good book nonetheless........2003-09-16
This is an excellent book in terms of content, but it is definitely not for beginners. It is not a step-by-step, click-this-button guide book. You really have to work your mind to follow the directions of the tutorials. However, it is still a good buy. It has great character modeling concepts, provided you know the basics of how to use Maya. I highly recommend this to intermediate users of Maya who wants to do character animation.

Customer Reviews:
a theory book, but useful.......2007-07-03
This is a THEORY book. If you don't understand the theory behind maya, pick this up. If you want tutorials, pick something else up.
This book is not another picture book, and its not really a tutorial book either. Its more of an explanation of how maya works and what things are used for, in a general sense. If you're picking up Maya for the first time I'd recommend Learning Autodesk Maya (and your version, which I'd recommend 8, which so far the tutorials are working fine in 8.5) If you're already a novice or higher maya user, and know your way around, this could prove useful.
After you've covered the material in a big tutorial book, keeping this one handy will help if you were to struggle on a specific task or forget how to do something, because theres plenty of explanation in this book.
I like how it explains the typical work pipeline, if you're doing this as a hobby but want to enter the industry someday, it will explain to you how daily work usually goes for each person, when working in teams on a pipeline, or how one person can control the entire pipeline when working alone.
A useful add to any maya users library, and one book can never cover everything there is to know about this program. This is my 2nd book covering just maya and found it interesting to read, but I'd start with a tutorial book for new maya users like myself.
Good book.......2007-03-21
This book was pretty good, although it was a little more "begginner" than i would of liked. Also, if you get a used copy, it might have a few dings but who cares right? as long as you can read it.. I love Maya books and this is a great addition to my Maya library!
The Art of Maya: An Introduction to 3D Computer Graphics .......2007-03-19
It is always the same thing that in other editions. When you will stop to copy and to put something new.
The covers and the works of the experts in 3D, are perfect. The price is also something expensive, being the same thing that in previous editions. I Offer you that you can be but original. Thank you and a cordial greeting.
Basically a Maya product guide.......2007-01-28
You know how some companies offer really slick little illustrated booklets detailing their products, the advantages they offer, and all the features they have in an attempt to get you to buy the product? Well that's basically what this book is. It's essentially a 200+ page advertisement for Maya. It doesn't really attempt to teach you how to do anything in particular using Maya, but it does gloss over most of the features and the sorts of things you can do once you learn it.
As a new Maya user and being brand new to 3-D modelling in general, I actually found it to be a decent and useful read. But I have to admit that I was hoping for, and expecting more of a tutorial. But it still gave me a decent "view from 10,000 feet" of the program, which is something few if any other books will give you. Also it is well written and very well illustrated, it just wasn't at all what I expected.
If you are considering buying it to learn Maya, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a decent overview of Maya, or are evaluating various 3-D tools, this may be a decent book to buy.
What they mean by "Art".......2006-07-30
I think some readers may be confused by the title, "The Art of Maya." This is not a coffe tale book showing some art made by Maya users. The title is a play on Sun Tzu's book, "The Art of War." That is exactly what this book is, it is a soup to nuts explaination of the "art" of using Maya.
This is a beginer's book that goes into great detail about the concepts of using Maya. Many newbies might prefer to just by advanced books and learn all the WOW tricks that Maya has to offer. Of course then those users don't know why they went through the process they did to create a stunning image, and are left without any creative energy.
This makes this book a MUST HAVE for beginers and intermediate users. Every bit of the under lying logic in how Maya works is explained.
This is also a good "reading" book too. The problem with other Maya books that have projects is that you can not sit down and read them without being in front of your computer to do the projects. With "The Art of Maya," you can set it next to your nightstand and just read a chapter or two before bedtime; you can learn things without having to sit in front of the box.

Beautiufl Photos with text that brings the Maya to Life.......1999-03-01
This book is beautiful. I lived in Chiapas Mexico for a time and this book captures the beauty and reality of the region to life better than any other book I have seen. The text is written by an anthropolgist that has lived in the region for years and really knows the Mayan people. The text is very informative about the parts of ancient Mayan culture that have survived into the present day and is peppered with the writer's own experiences with the Maya making it far from dry reading. It will make you want to visit this amazing region of the world inhabited by the Living Maya.
Book Description
The Maya Embedded Language, or MEL, is the very foundation of the Maya application: it's what makes it so powerful. And, if you know MEL, you can make Maya work more efficiently for your own projects. Whether customizing the workspace, modifying the tools that already exist, or creating new tools, an artist versed in MEL is ready to exploit the true power of Maya. The problem is that MEL can be very intimidating to artists and other non-programmers. To an artist, MEL represents a whole other world filled with words like variable, conditional statements, and vector cross-product. Like any other programming language, MEL has its own vocabulary and rules of grammar. To master it, you simply need to learn the rules: you don't have to become a programmer. The MEL Companion helps artists do this. In the first part of the book, you'll learn about the syntax, vocabulary, and structure of MEL - its grammar. You'll learn some basic math concepts, such as types of numbers and simple math equations, and at the end of part one you'll explore concepts for building and constructing programs. The second part covers the construction of scripts that detail some of the ways you can use MEL. You'll learn about expressions, primitive objects, lighting and rendering, tool creation, interface customization, and reading and writing files in and out of Maya. The MEL Companion was written by an artist for artists. To get the most out of this book, you should have a fundamental knowledge of working in 3D and the Maya program. In addition, although you might not have an extensive knowledge and understanding of mathematics, you should have some willingness to learn the basics of working with numbers. Other than that, everything else is explained in language that is hopefully as clear as it is entertaining
Customer Reviews:
Full of errors.......2007-04-29
It's ironic in a sad way that a programming book be filled with syntactical errors and painfully obvious the author didn't bother to proof read, let alone run, his code. I am a newcomer to MEL, but have been programming in other languages (C, C++, Python, Java) for ten years; I feel I've taken a step backwards insofar as my MEL progress is concerned. No one involved with this book has put forth the required effort and as such has done the MEL community a disservice
If the code weren't rampant with errors, this would be the best MEL book out there. As it stands, it's the worst. At the very least, the publisher could have released the errata on their website as others have done.
I recommend David Gould's "Complete Maya Programming" series as an excellent replacement. There's a reason this book is so inexpensive when purchased used. Don't waste your time.
a great mel book...........2007-01-22
an excellent advanceded resource......does the best job explaining UI layouts and their required nesting I have read yet. Very clear and concise. Has full file write and read chapter...file format...even outputing an html page. It is not just in the programs, but the text is very clear and to the point. Includes flow charts, ui layouts...just the whole process to make a student into a professional. Probably the most advanced tutorial is the save weights tool....it reads and writes the vertex skin weights for all influences to a file based not on id but world space locations to compensate for changes in topology.
How did the editor of this book keep his job?.......2005-02-09
While this book was VERY hard to follow ( I'm a pretty technical guy when it comes to 3D) i WAS able to follow it most of the time. What really pisses me off is that it is a programming book and just about every page has a syntax error of some kind or another. Really mad about the fact that just as you think you're getting it there's a not always so obvious syntax error that the author and the editor and the publisher all missed!I spent more time troubleshooting the authors oversights then i did learning anything - WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? nobody buy this book until they fix all their little screw ups.
Its very Good .......2004-10-05
I am shocked at the bad reviews this book has received. Make no mistake -> THIS ONE IS A REALLY GOOD ONE . This book is not for rank beginners in mel . Its more for someone who understands the Mel Language adequately.
Definetely the most advanced of books available on Mel. Beginners can take a look at Marks Book. Once you know mel reasonably well this is the book to go for. Yes few printing mistakes are there but that cant take away much from what is a nice book with some thought provoking examples. 5 stars.
An excellent place to go for intermediate MEL scripting..........2003-11-24
This book is not for beginners. However, if you've learned the basics of MEL scripting and are looking for a good place to learn about more complex scripting techniques, this is a great place to start. I feel that this book is complementary to "MEL Scripting for Maya Animators" (which, in the interest of full disclosure, I helped write) in that it's a great book to jump into once you have a strong command of the basics.
Book Description
The most comprehensive and beautiful bead-stringing guide to date, the book provides detailed instructions and clear step-by-step photography for a range of jewelry projects, including necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.
Customer Reviews:
The worst beading book I've ever seen.......2007-04-24
If I could give this book zero stars I would. This book was complete waste of money, the jewelry is uninspiring and the workmanship is so poor that I can't believe the author has actually managed to sell some of her creations. Most of the pages are filled with colorful and pretty pictures of beads but I didn't buy this book to see pictures of beads, I wanted to get ideas to create jewelry. There are thousand times better books out there, don't waste your money or time with this book.
Excellent book.......2007-03-26
I bought the book as a gift for my wife who has been beading for about 4 months. Almost every week she begins another project from the book and again thanks me for it. She loves the easy to follow directions, step by step instructions, tips, and large color photographs.
Basic but beautiful.......2007-03-12
I received this book 2 weeks ago and even that I consider it to be too basic for me I still appreciate the color combinations and the beautiful jewelry and pictures. The information on tools and other supplies needed is very helpful. Is also a good source for inspiration. I will give it to my 12 year old daugther with a bead kit so she can start making her own designs.

Starting out making jewelry? Buy this book .......2007-01-07
At last a book that simply lives up to its title - beaded jewelry shows you exactly how to create a myriad of styles (necklaces, bracelets, earrings), using different beads, stinging materials and findings. All jewellery items are covered in this book together with an excellent reference section which details shapes, size, and then covers material types such as glass, crystal, metal, resin/plastics, wood etc. All your findings and stringing material options are clearly listed with tips for using each one. Lovely projects that are contemporary and very wearable. My students love this book, it is one of the most popular in my beginners classes as all the designs are achievable and not daunting for a beginner.

This book is a must for African art and ethnology buffs........1998-10-31
The most striking feature of AFRICAN CANVAS is the close up detail and large pictures of exterior and interior West African mud house design. Some pottery design is also featured. Colors are mostly earth toned because natural pigments are used. A close-up and personal look at this beautiful art form, and a good resource for folks interested in ethnology and in African design.

Through the eyes of an african american woman.......2007-04-19
I am not African American, not African, not American, and this book was such an eye opener. It is so rich in humanity, it is a pleasure to read. Each one of the 6 books is written with a distinctive voice as a person is maturing. Maya has a way of writing that is refreshing, intimate and profound.
Through her eyes we become aware of the distinctive culture and values that her characters share or challenge. We see the need that every person has to live life fully and the questions we all need to answer about who we are and what are we here for.
I particularly liked the "All God's chhildren need traveling shoes" best. this book is a must for people who seek to accept that we can be different, yet valued.
It is a distinctive book because it is written in a way that lifts the spirits and intrigues the intelect. .... "to the determination to be no victim of any kind".
Good experience.......2007-04-19
The book is precisely as described and it was shipped within a reasonable amount of time. Thanks...
maja in detail.......2007-04-10
I happened to hear her speak at a lecture series. She spoke for an hour and I was interested to read more about her life. I am only on page 280 but this woman is amazing and her writing style is so crisp and clear, it is as captivating as she was as a speaker. I enthusiatically recommend this book.
My eyes have been opened!!!.......2006-02-17
Other than Maya's poems, I have never read her autobiographies. WOW barely describes what I read and felt. I always thought of Maya to be just what she is....a poet, an author. To read how her early life was, I see how her life's experiences brought her to where she is today. Not only does she speak honestly, her style of writing makes one feel they are her in the books. The size of the book may seem intimidating, but I could not put it down. I had to schedule myself to study for my class and read this book!
Review of Maya Angelou's Collected Biographies.......2005-09-29
I purchased this book after reading, "I know why the caged bird sings", I found myself captivated by the spellbounding aura of maya angelou and in a thirst for her story purchased this book. I have drank her words readily and my only regret is that like all great things, the pages shall run out and my feast shall come to an end. This is a wonderful gift for any Maya Angelou fan, it branches outside of her poetry and makes the goddess of words appear a little more human.
