4 out of 5 stars This is for the serious botanist.......2003-04-23

Contains excellent illustrations. The terminology and abbreviations may be confusing to some. Needs to be updated as some of the family nomenclature has been changed. I wouldn't recommend this for the average "what's this plant" person.

4 out of 5 stars Flora of the Pacific Northwest.......2000-02-19

EXCELLENT first-book to reach for when needing proper scientific terminology. Does include some common names in the descriptions. Extremely detailed and uses extensive abbreviations. I used this book in Univ. of Idaho botany classes in the 1980's and still use it in my daily job now (year 2000). However, it does indeed need to be updated for current terminology and names, including lower-case spellings.

4 out of 5 stars "The" Botany Key........1999-01-22

This botany key is used by University of Idaho's botany classes. It is still "the" book reached for by the professional in the work force. Afterall, what else is there that is so comprehensive? However, it is in need of revision due to changes in genus and specie names since its fifth printing of 1981.

4 out of 5 stars Respected key for Pacific Northwest flora........1998-12-31

This key for PNW flora is the key used by Washington State University. Text is scientific in nature, and is not intended for pleasure reading. An excellent but complex key, it follows a standard dichotomous (two choices for each step) format. Although not intended for the layman, the text includes a good glossary and has helpful black and white illustrations. This book would not be a good introduction to dichotomous keying as it is designed for the serious botanist.

5 out of 5 stars Great Adventure.......2007-08-18

This is a great twist for Dragonmark and non Dragonmark races alike. The four pc's I am running through it are loving it. The new encounter system is great. You don't need to lug around all your monster books, it has everything you need to know in the book itself. From tactics to different scenarios, depending on what the pc's do. This adventure will easily take characters from 5th to 9th. Keeps the pc's rockin with little down time.

5 out of 5 stars LENGTHY BUT VERY GOOD ADVENTURE.......2007-07-30

Eyes of the Lich Queen is a campaign/adventure book designed for the Eberron setting although with a little creativity and work, it can really be dropped into any fantasy campaign of your choosing if you do not play in Eberron. You'll require all of the standard books to play. The adventure is designed for four 5th level characters although five or six may be more reasonable. This is a good ol' fashioned quest adventure with the players seeking an artifact called The Dragon's Eye. The ancient artifact was created during the age of Demons and its said the Eye can give the holder total domination over dragons. The dragons are none to happy about someone finding the artifact that had been considered mere legend. They set out to find the Eye for safekeeping. Meanwhile, the lich queen Vol is dead set on finding the Eye for herself and has set her agents about finding the artifact.

The adventure is plated out over four parts and at 126 pages, is a fairly lengthy adventure, designed to take the player characters from 5th to 9th level by the time the campaign is finished. The journey will take the group over 5,000 miles in their travels although DM's are encouraged to give players a sense of the vast distances they are traveling without bogging them down with random encounters every step of the way. The designers are looking for an epic feel to their adventure, not a tedious one. The players will be drawn into their adventure with the promise of a great treasure, hired by a Silver Dragon named Sur'Kil, who will appear to them in the form of a middle-aged human.

The first target is the Temple of Kha'shazul, located in the jungles of Q'barra, and home to various tribes of Lizard Folk. Sur'Kil speaks only of ancient relics to be found within the temple but does not mention the Eye specifically. With the ancient temple is where the players will first hear mention of the Eye and, should they survive the temple, report their findings to Su'Kil. Sur'kil then sends the players on the path of another ancient artifact hunter who sought the Eye. Next up the players go island hopping, encounterin pirates, and eventually finding themselves at the prison fortress of Dreadhold, searching for an old gnome who has important symbols and notes tattooed into his skin that will lead the players to their next clue on the trail of the Dragon's Eye.

Like the other adventure books, Eyes of the Lich Queen presents the locations in full, and in brief overview, with the specifics of each encounter area coming after that. The thing I like most about the book is the sense of wonder and scope of the entire adventure. This isn't just a jungle crawl but a truly epic, world-spanning quest to exotic locations, cities, and yes, dungeon settings as well. There's also a strong sense of intrigue as well. The players are not only pitted against the creatures they encounter along the way, but also against the forces of the Lich Queen Vol and her deadly agents who believe the players may have already located the eye. Of course, it will take a deft DM to really bring this all home to the players and hopefully, yours is one!

There's a lot to do in Eyes of the Lich Queen and it need not be followed in linear fashion...again, a skilled DM can really make this a great time for the players. There are scores of maps in the book! I personally don't play Eberron, but as I said, it's no big deal to drop this into, say, a Forgotten Realms campaign or even one of your own designs. One Beef...I'd have liked to seen this at around $20 rather than $25.

REVIEWED BY TIM JANSON

3 out of 5 stars Since this is soft bound.......2007-06-12

This is a well written adventure with some extremely good ideas on DMing and keeping the story moving. My only real problem with it is the price and the fact it is a soft bound book. If I wanted to overpay for something I would have bought this at a comic book shop.

4 out of 5 stars Very good addition .......2007-06-08

This seems to be one in the latest trend of WoTC adventure products for its various gameworlds. Once again, this is a set of adventures that make up a mini-campaign taking the players through various levels. It uses the latest formatting design from WoTC. That is, having encounters in a separate area, at the end of the chapters, complete with maps. Honestly, it is confusing at first, having to jump back and forth between the non-combat description and the tactical scenarios. It takes maybe two sessions to get the hang of it, in my opinion.

The adventure itself is very intriguing to read, and hopefully this will translate to the gaming table. The encounters are challenging, and the authors seem to have made very tough, and memorable opponents instead of your basic cookie-cutter monsters. There are a few typos and omissions in the text, which unfortunately, bring a good quality product slightly down.

In summary though, well worth purchasing. Plenty of surprises for players, and so far, loads of fun to run.

4 out of 5 stars Best Eberron published adventure.......2007-05-05

So far I would have to say that this is the best published Eberron adventure out there. The first adventure paths starting with Shadows of the Last War were adventures in railroading if you ask me. Eyes of the Lich Queen is much better as Nicolas Logue is at the helm. You might know him since he wrote some great adventures for Dungeon Magazine.

4 out of 5 stars Seven Suspensfull Scenes.......2007-04-12

Seven of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous films are brought to life by Kees Moerbeek's complex paper engineering. Each of seven spreads is a large montage of scenes from the film and includes a brief synopsis of the plot. You may also lift a flap and view the scene in which Hitchcock has placed himself in the movie, something he did in almost every film he made. This is a must-have for any Hitchcock fan, and for pop-up collectors as well

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tribute to the master!.......2007-03-22

A visual delight & work of art! Though I would have liked more text, this would probably have detracted from the book's artistry & visual appeal; as it is, the text that is present is full of quirky facts & fits quite nicely with the images. Very unique & fun book!

5 out of 5 stars Hitchcock Book.......2007-01-19

When I read a review about this book in the Washington Post, I thought it would make a good present for my son because Hitchcock is one of his favorite directors. My son does not, however, enjoy reading, so I wasn't sure if he would want the book. Much to my pleasure he told me it was one of his favorite Christmas presents he received.

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly impressed.......2007-01-19

I gave my GF this pop-up book for Xmas. She is a big Hitchcock fan. I thought she would be really impressed but she just briefly flipped through and barely raised an eyebrow. The other day I saw it buried under a pile of junk in her room. It's a good idea but not all that interesting to look at.
I had read a glowing review of the book and the techincal genius of the "paper engineers" who constructed it in the Wall St. Journal. While some of the displays are amusing, ultimately, I was not all that impressed and found the report in the WSJ to be exaggerated.
Makes a good coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-01-10

This book is so unique and a must for any Hitchcock movie fan. It gave great info on the movies it covered. I just wish it had "all" of his movies!

This is the first book ever to document the secret history of the evil conspirators responsible for wars, revolutions, and financial debacles around the world. It is a virtual encyclopedia of fresh new information and facts unmasking the Jewish Illuminati elite and their sinister goals and hidden influence. Here is just a part of the secrets you will discover in this eye-opening 320 page book: * These High Priests of Lucifer possess ownership of almost every major book publishing firm in the world. (page 8) * Rothschild draws up plans for the creation of the Order of the Illuminati and entrusts Adam Weishaupt with its development. (page 32) * Rothschild gains control of Americas money system by setting up a central bank. (page 37) * The Rothschild's use their money power to foment the bloody U.S. Civil War, 1860-1865. (page 62) * The Jewish Encyclopedia admits that the rich and powerful Rothschild family are now the "guardians of the papal treasure." (page 87) * President Roosevelt, controlled by overseer Bernard Baruch, orders the pyramid, all-seeing eye and Latin inscription, "Novus Ordo Seclorum," be placed on the U.S. one dollar bill. (page 128) * Jewish banker James Paul Warburg tells U.S. Senate, "We shall have World Government...by conquest or by consent." (page 160) * Jewish commandant tortures innocent victims, murdering babies by bashing in their heads and raping Gentile women, then flees to Israel who will not extradite to face charges. (page 226) * Israeli secret agents, in concert with rogue Bush Administration high-ups and Jewish groups in the U.S.A., engineer 9/11 and the bombing of the World Trade Center towers. (page 25) . . .and much, much more. A very disturbing book, indeed.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing book, a must-read!.......2007-08-28

As a doctoral student, with a Master's degree, I can competently recommend this book to anyone looking for an accurate, unbiased history of the Zionist movement. This book doesn't just spew out meaningless opinion or commentary, but provides you with FACTS. It's all there, names, dates, sources, draw your own conclusions; the author did a super job.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary........2007-07-20

This is a must read for all people today -- required reading for anyone who aspires to understand the world we are actually living in now. After reading this book, so much of what's going on, and has been going on during the last century or so, suddenly makes SENSE. Perplexing events, social conundrums, the "whys" and "how could this haves" that have plagued thinking people in recent decades are clearly answered. A picture emerges which is totally cohesive. The way that Hitchcock structures his book is very unusual but truly brilliant: he merely states a year, beginning with 740 A.D., and lists pertinent historical events that occurred that year. He offers very little commentary, but his theses are supported all the more powerfully because he doesn't -- the facts speak eloquently, shockingly, clearly for themselves. He brings his chronology all the way up to the year 2005. Yet within this unorthodox structure is a narrative which is exceedingly readable. It's fascinating, gripping even. This is one of the most illuminating and important books I have ever read, and I believe you will ever read. It is a liberating experience; the truth will, indeed, set you free. Thank you, Andrew Carrington Hitchcock; you are owed immense gratitude by us all.

4 out of 5 stars revealing the past to give hope for the future.......2007-05-30

Although the title may scare off some potential readers, (it is taken from Revelations 2:9 and 3:9), this book provides a useful timeline of historical events which detail how the Rothschild family has gained control of the world's economic and political order. Events are described in a neutral tone and sources are named; with detailed footnotes this book could be an even more powerful. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile reading and provides much useful information for sharing with people who want to know more about how they may fit into the 'novus ordo seclorum'.

4 out of 5 stars Detailed, but not complete picture.......2007-05-13

The bulk of this book is composed of a timeline of events in the Rothschild/Zionist/Marxist branch of the world conpiracy. There is a wealth of information compiled here in one volume. For some balance, try Engdahl's "A Century of War". For a more general view in one wolume, try "How the World Really Works".

5 out of 5 stars Type 1 Diabetes: A Guide for Children, Adolescents, Young Adults--& Their Caregivers, 3rd Edition.......2007-09-21

I have found this book VERY helpful. From time to time we have questions/concerns that come up, we have found easy to understand answers/advise for real life issues.

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good!.......2007-09-09

I have only received this book recently, so I have not read the whole thing. The author doesn't recommend reading it from cover to cover, but to use it more as a reference. I started reading it at the beginning and am now on page 46. It is so interesting, and easy to read, that I see no reason NOT to read it straight through! Even though a lot of the information is technical, it is written in such a way so as to make it fairly easy to understand. My 13-year-old son has only had Type 1 diabetes for three months now and I am hungry for this kind of information. I want to understand this disease as much as possible, and so far, this book is great!

    5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-02

This book is wonderful. I got it shortly after my son was diagnosed and read it cover to cover. I was so happy to have a book with so much information that didn't make me cry from the introduction. So many of the diabetes books begin with a very clinical review of the complications of diabetes. I continue to refer to this book and learn things as I gain more experience with diabetes care. This is a fantastic book loaded with information, but at the same time it is not intimidating like some of the others. Best book I have so far - great reference.

5 out of 5 stars Really a guide for diabetes.......2007-03-29

It is very hard to hear that your son has juvenile diabetes.
I believe docs even don't know the problems you may have, when you 're trying to treat diabetes. After reading this guide now we're more comfortable and can manage diabetes well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for health providers and patients.......2006-12-21

This book is a very useful resource for health providers involved in the care of type 1 DM patients. The authors extensive personal experience is adequately distilled in a clear way. There are many tables and graphs that are useful in everyday practice as well as in patient education. I found the references to be impressive. This book will be a valuable addition to your medical reference library. A spanish version would be most helpful for non-english speaking patients and MD's.

    Book Description

    The Past, Present, and Future—Exposed

The events wracking the Middle East today are confusing to even the most avid news buff. Now all the answers to your questions are offered in just one resource. Divided into five main sections, Iran: The Coming Crisis contains the most up-to-date, thorough information available and is complete with maps, charts, and timelines for visual assistance. Iran’s past, present, and future are exposed—the country’s quest for nuclear weapons and support of Palestinian terror groups, its ability to “play the oil card,” and Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s apocalyptic beliefs that motivate his actions. You’ll discover the truth about today’s events, how they relate to Bible prophecy, and what the Bible clearly describes is yet to come. It’s a crisis unlike any the world has ever faced.

Are We Headed for a Nuclear Jihad?

“ Israel must be wiped off the map,” Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said it himself. He has denied the Holocaust, and his actions are motivated by a dangerous apocalyptic view of Islam. Meanwhile, Islamic extremists are in hot pursuit of nuclear weapons as they stand as gatekeepers to the Persian Gulf oil flow. Closer to home, President Bush has stated that the greatest threat to America is nuclear terrorism.

In a prophecy written over 2,500 years ago, Ezekiel 38-39 foretells Iran ’s future. Iran , Russia , and other Islamic nations will invade Israel in the end times. Today, the connection between Iran and Russia only grows. How close is this invasion?

    What will happen?

    Will America survive?

    Will the world?

Mark Hitchcock , an expert in Bible prophecy, exposes Iran ’s past, present, and future with striking clarity. Find maps, charts, and answers to your every question inside.

“I highly recommend Mark as a faithful guide to understanding current events in light of God’s wonderful plan of prophecy.”

    Story Behind the Book

There seems to be no turning back from the looming crisis in the Middle East. The Islamic and political rulers of Iran are set in their ideology by principle. The West and Israel are headed for some sort of confrontation economically, socially, and likely militarily. Mark Hitchcock ’s background as a lawyer, pastor, and expert in Bible prophecy suits him perfectly as a Christian authority on the subject. Timing is critical, and his new book will release as more and more everyday people—Christians and non-Christians alike—realize the gravity of world events and question how they relate to Bible prophecy.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, yet lacking........2007-06-04

With the onslaught of materiel being poured out on the subject of Iran and its supposed role in Bible prophecy, it would be a challenging task for anyone to write anything fresh and original on the subject. Nevertheless, Mark Hitchcock has thrown his hat into the ring. This may not be the most sensational books on the subject, but it is one of the fairer treatments that you will see.

There are several things about this book that are good. First, Mark writes with a reader friendly, teaching style instead of the loud preachy style of someone like John Hagee. Two, his historical information about Persia and Babylon was presented in a memorable way. Third, the information on Iran was fair, informative, and quite possibly right as regards to their being a nuclear threat. Fourth, he at least makes an effort to deal with objections to his view of Ezekiel 38-39 and does not just assume that everyone is on board with him. I do think, however, that he is wrong when he says the "vast majority" of scholars see Ezekiel 38-39 as having a future literal fulfillment in the sense that they see Russia, Iran, etc, coming down to attack the modern day nation of Israel. In fact, I think the only safe thing to say there is that the vast majority of dispensational scholars see it as fulfilled in this manner. For a past fulfillment, he seems to indicate that only preterists take a past fulfillment view of this passage, but that is far from accurate. One does not have to be a preterist, to believe that Ezekiel 38-39 has been fulfilled or all of the OT for that matter.
Hitchcock does, in a footnote, deal with Gary DeMar's view that the Ezekiel passage was fulfilled in what happened in Esther, but he was a little too quick to dismiss some of the very good verbal parallels that were made by DeMar. The good thing is that Hitchcock did list what he calls the inconsistencies between Esther and Ezekiel.

Another problem, I find with Mark's handeling of Ezekiel 38-39 is that he fails to address that when Ezekiel writes this that the very first Temple (built by Solomon) was still standing. There was still another Temple to be built in 516 BC and then attacked and shut down by the Syrian's, and later remodeled by Herod, and then destoryed in 70 AD by the Romans.

Let us grant, however, that Ezekiel 38-39 is yet future. Mark's placement of the battle of Gog and MaGog after the rapture is simply guess work. He fails to deal with the fact that Revelation places a battle of Gog and Magog after the 1000 year reign (Revelation 20:8). It is rather odd that he at least attempts to deal with many of the other problems of the Ezekiel passage, but does not deal with its placement in Revelation.

Mark assumes a dispensational position throughout the book without defending that position as valid. He puts his hat on the rack of what is currently popular in pop theology. I am certain, however, that Mark does in other books defend this position, but he assumes it in this book.

Let me now state what I view to be the biggest problem with the book. Mark does not deal with the calling or role of the Church at all. He does have a call for his readers to get saved at the end, but even informs the new believers to find a local church, but he in no way defines what the voice and position of the Church should be on the complex conditions that are currently facing the Middle East. Several times he unashameably says that the Church is "whisked away" in the rapture to be with the Lord. Now I know that Mark would likely say that the Church should be telling people to repent and get ready for the rapture, because of the conditions in the Middle East, but what about the Church's voice concerning justice, mercy and peace in the Middle East? He is so sure of the rapture (this he will take as a compliment I am sure) that he does not see the Church as having any real role, other than to wait to be "whisked away." The problem I have with, not just Mark, but most of the dispensationalists preachers that I hear is that they are ready to abandon God's creation, rush off to Heaven and let Hell break lose for seven years. The problem with this view is what if thirty years from now, the rapture has not taken place and many are dead in the Middle East and in the world because of this crises, what should the Church be saying or doing? Mark seems to be writing as an American preacher and not taking seriously his calling to be a preacher is God's universal Church. In my opinion, he makes the mistake of seeing the West and especially the USA as Christian and the rest of the world, well, not so much. He talks in a supportive way about Israel and the USA taking out Iran's nuclear facilities and stopping them, but that is the role of militaries and government, but what about the role and voice of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Should we not be groaning and crying out at the place of the World's pain and praying for peace and working toward it? Look back at the various crises throughout history. Look at the Holocaust, Rwanda, or South African Apartheid. What should the Church's role have been in these situations? We need to be asking the same questions today about the Middle East. It may be that the rapture takes place 200 years from now or even 2000 years from now and we cannot just sit around and waith to get "whisked away." There is power for salvation and deliverance in the gospel of Jesus Christ, not just for individual privatized salvation, but for the world. A new creation has been unleashed in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and the Church needs to live and speak in light of this power and not just wait to be taken out and escape. Mark could add a great deal of depth to his perspective if he would consider these things.

There is much more I could say about this book, but I will close on a positive note and that is that Mark Hitchcock has written an informative and sencere book that rightly states that their is a real crises with Iran and nuclear weapons. Let us all pray for the coming of the Lord and look for it, but let us be praying for peace in the Middle East and let us work toward it. It may be that the Lord hears and heals.

3 out of 5 stars Comment on Iran: The Coming Crisis.......2007-01-16

The book was interesting to some extent, but it did not hold my attention the way I hoped it would. After reading a little way into it, I skimmed through the rest of the book. Perhaps I was just being a little picky, though. Others may have a different opinion entirely.

1 out of 5 stars Unreason, or faith, is the threat........2006-10-18

When I started reading "Iran, the coming crisis", I thought I was going to read an informative, current affairs book on the crisis with Iran.
Mark Hitchock is blind sided by his belief that the Bible holds the Thruth. His story of the second coming, and the rapture being "an event that, from our human perspective, could occur at any moment" acctually made me laugh. We are even provided with God's Blueprint for the End of Times (with a time line!) But, this is serious matter. Mr Hitchock's book is a sad case of unreasonable, almost fanatical thinking. He has written a staggering Christian lunacy.
The problems we are facing in the Middle East are too serious . American should get informed. This book belongs in the trash bin.

      Book Description

For half a century Alfred Hitchcock created films full of gripping and memorable music. Over his long career he presided over more musical styles than any director in history and ultimately changed how we think about film music. This book is the first to fully explore the essential role music played in the movies of Alfred Hitchcock.
Based on extensive interviews with composers, writers, and actors, and research in rare archives, Jack Sullivan discusses how Hitchcock used music to influence the atmosphere, characterization, and even storylines of his films. Sullivan examines the director’s important relationships with various composers, especially Bernard Herrmann, and tells the stories behind the musical decisions. Covering the whole of the director’s career, from the early British works up to Family Plot, this engaging look at the work of Alfred Hitchcock offers new insight into his achievement and genius and changes the way we watch—and listen—to his movies.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book on the music of Hitchcock's films.......2007-05-08

Author Jack Sullivan is a modern-day prophet. His writings about horror, music, & films are all top-notch. This book on Hitchcock is just amazing! After reading Sullivan's chapter on each film, I'm watching (or re-watching) those films that I can find, and seeing them with new insight. This is one of the best books on film & music that I have ever read. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to the Master.......2007-01-10

Probably the most memorable musical sound in cinema is the slashing strings of the shower scene in _Psycho_, a supreme example of how music can heighten image. It isn't too surprising that the example should come from a Hitchcock film; over the past two decades, critics and academics have paid increasing attention to how Hitchcock used music because he was so good at doing so. In _Hitchcock's Music_ (Yale University Press), Jack Sullivan, a professor of English and of American studies, has given a guide to the music (or frequently, silence) in all of Hitchcock's sound films, with stories about Hitchcock's work with composers and how soundtracks became formed as particular pictures progressed. Sullivan knows the films better than almost all of his readers will, and while much of Hitchcock's music is memorable, Sullivan writes of it in such detail that even Hitchcock fans will find themselves wishing that they had instant recall of each particular phrase or tune. I myself went back to listen to the early talkie _The 39 Steps_ after reading Sullivan's chapter about it, because although I have seen the movie many times, I could not remember the music or how important it was to the plot of the film. This then is a wonderful reference book, and it will drive Hitchcock fans back into their DVDs to attend to the master with new ears.

Sullivan begins, of course, with Hitchcock's first picture after his silent days, _Blackmail_. Hitchcock used the music in this initial film the same way he would use it throughout his career, like using a harp for a demonic sequence (when harps are usually angelic) and using cheerful music as an irony to what is being shown on the screen. Using a musical tune as an important part of the plot is one of Hitchcock's many tricks. In _The Lady Vanishes_, the tune itself is Hitchcock's "MacGuffin", the otherwise unimportant device upon which the whole plot turns, because the tune is an encryption of a state secret. In _Shadow of a Doubt_, "The Merry Widow" waltz is intricately important to the plot, leading to the identification of Uncle Charlie as a murderer. Hitchcock was brilliant at using "source music", the kind of music that might be heard by the characters in a scene as a theater orchestra or a radio plays nearby. In _Rear Window_, there is traditional movie music from an invisible source only at the very end of the movie; all the rest of the music has been from radios and phonographs owned by the people being viewed through the windows.

There are fine stories here about the famous Hitchcock / Bernard Herrmann collaboration and its eventual break-up, as well as about David O. Selznick's meddlesome but often valuable recommendations on music and other aspects of _Rebecca_, Hitchcock's first Hollywood effort and his first use of a lush Hollywood score. Among the wonderful anecdotes are those about _Psycho_ itself, and how Herrmann's stubborn insistence on getting his music into the film kept the movie as a feature rather than a television show. Hitchcock had not wanted any music in the shower scene, for instance, but Herrmann asked him to view the scene without music, followed by a version with music. Hitchcock quickly settled on the version with music, whereupon Herrmann made the mock-petulant remark, "But you requested that we not add any music," getting the reply, "Improper suggestion, my boy, improper suggestion." Best of all, _Hitchcock's Music_ concentrates attention on a vital aspect of Hitchcock's success, one that is not always appreciated. Sullivan certainly appreciates the innovative and complicated ways Hitchcock worked musically, and any fan of the movies will fine new reasons here to admire them.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating book on the film composer's role and Hitchcock's role in the scores for his films.......2007-01-01

If you're a Hitchcock fan, you already know how well Hitchcock used music in his films. Hitchcock was the ultimately leader/collaborator--he knew what he wanted for his films and had a strong instinct which collaborators would do the best job of bringing their talent to his films. His work with Herrmann is celebrated but he worked well with other film composers as well. When Hitchcock's instincts betrayed him (as the author of this book points out) it's usually because his commercial instincts took the lead over his artistic ones; "Torn Curtain" a flawed Hitchcock film with a number of marvelous set pieces would have been much improved with the original music that Bernard Herrmann composed. Hitchcock fired Herrmann when he didn't deliver a commercial score with a hit song or melody that could pull in a lucrative profit. Sullivan also accurately points out that while Hitchcock was great at collaboration he ultimately was THE boss and would get rid of things he felt didn't fit in with his decisions (right or wrong) for a film.

Hitchcock at his best (as Sullivan accurately points out) knew the impact of music to enhance a film not distract from it. Once Hitchcock had control of his films, he pushed the various composers he worked with (from Steiner, Rozsa to Herrmann)to follow their muse just making sure that it fit in with his ultimate vision for the film. He may have been a micromanager but he gave the composers that worked on his films tremendous freedom on some projects. For example Herrmann envisioned the "score" for "The Birds" to primarily be the sounds (electronically created) of the creatures themselves. Herrmann's instincts were in perfect synch with Hitchcock's and the result was a great film "score" that perfectly complimented the film.

After Herrmann and Hitchcock parted ways there really wasn't a composer that produced work that truly enhanced Hitchcock's films (although the single collaboration with composer John Williams came close I personally feel that Jerry Goldsmith would probably have been a better choice for "Family Plot")which is too bad--when the quality of his films fell and as audience taste changed, Hitchcock was increasingly vunerable. A solid score by a composer that understood his films well would have done a lot to improve some of Hitchcock's lesser, later films.

The book may be a bit too academic for casual film fans so just be aware of that. I'd suggest taking a look at the book to see if it will appeal to you prior to buying it.
