The Essential Guide to the Cameraman's Craft

Since its initial publication in 1973, Cinematography has become the guidebook for filmmakers. Based on their combined fifty years in the film and television industry, authors Kris Malkiewicz and M. David Mullen lay clear and concise groundwork for basic film techniques, focusing squarely on the cameraman's craft. Readers will then learn step-by-step how to master more advanced techniques in postproduction, digital editing, and overall film production.

This completely revised third edition, with more than 200 new illustrations, will provide a detailed look at:

Whether the final product is a major motion picture, an independent film, or simply a home video, Cinematography can help any filmmaker translate his or her vision into a quality film.

3 out of 5 stars Not terrible........2007-07-12

This is a good starting point book and/or a reference book. Let's be honest... we're not going to learn how to shoot a film just by reading a book on cinematography. Experience is the best way to learn, which is largely how I learned how to shoot film.

This book will provide you with a lot of technical information, which is why I slated it as a good reference book. Little things about color temperature, filters, film speeds, lenses, etc. There are some useful diagrams and photographs in the book, and it is kind of "matter of factly" written.

I give it only three stars because though it is a decent book... its competitor "Cinematography: Theory and Practice" by Brown is much more informative, much better written and organized, and perhaps the most important, has a myriad film stills as reference.

4 out of 5 stars Updated classic.......2005-10-02

This has been a film orentated clasic for a long time. It was overdue for an update and David Mullen did an excellent job, including Digital Intermediate and other much needed touches. This makes for a very good film orented book

* timecode in IEEE1395 (Firewire)
* timecode and digital video cassettes
* new recording formats of DVD, DV mini cassettes and D6 are included

Benefit from the expertise and inside knowledge of the author

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not much written about timecode.......2007-06-18

I professionally work in the field of computer based digital video and know that there simply isn't much written about timecode. This book is a great reference, I have used it to successfully implement VITC and LTC encoders/decoders in software, timecode math libraries and the like. This is the book I refer to and recommend when these often confusing topics arise. I have used the first two editions but have not seen the third. I hope it adds more information about digital production.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It should be called "The" Grip Book........2007-10-01

Michael Uva knows his stuff. Stimultaneously entertaining and informative. In addition to expertly covering the grip business, Mr. Uva strongly advocates working hard, working safe, and being honest. His own personal success indicates that he practices what he preaches. The grip book covers not just what the equipment is and how it works, but how the grip should work and interact with other professionals on the set, (even the ones with which the grip might rather not interact). Much of the advice given in this book could be just as easily applied to any area of life where a person wants to be successful and respected when working with others. I haven't read a better book on this subject. It's required reading for anyone who grips for us unless they went to one of the better film schools, in which case it's not required, just recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good for noobs and experienced alike.......2007-09-11

A wealth of information. Good for helping newbies get familiar with the equipment and how it's used. Great illustrations and DVD. Experienced grips will find the TOT's (tricks of the trade) helpful as well. The "Grip Rap" theme song is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Grip book & DVD right on target.......2007-07-03

I hit the dvd first and it was great! Very fast paced, but that's what is needed. Don't have a lot of time to sit and watch tv. Author goes over each piece of equipment so by the end of the dvd, you've been introduced to a very large selection of grip stuff and know how it's used.

The book then goes more in depth and more about how to act and how to get along with the others around you. Very Very valuable stuff here even if you're just dabbling in the business.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Grip Book by Uva.......2007-01-03

It is what the title says. I think it is missing some of the older industry jargon but that probably doesn't matter. This is the only grip book you'll need. The only way to learn more is to actually work on a set.

Book Description

Skilful lighting involves a subtle blend of systematic mechanics and a sensitive visual imagination. It requires anticipation, perceptiveness, patience and know-how. But learning through practice alone can take a great deal of time. This book is a distillation of many years' experience, with advice and guidance that will bring successful results right from the start.

Whether you are a student studying lighting techniques in the television, video and film media, or a professional lighting for the camera, this book will be an invaluable aid. Other members of the production team, including camera crews, designers and directors, will also find the information here interesting and useful.

The book concentrates primarily on the fundamental principles of lighting in studios, on location and display, as well as single-camera, small unit production, improvised and economy lighting, and working with limited facilities. Emphasis is also placed on the safety aspects of working with lighting equipment.

Lighting for Television and Film reflects the author's considerable experience of lighting techniques in BBC studios, his teaching and consultancy work.

Gerald Millerson's analytical writings spring from a lifetime's personal experience in the medium, and from his teaching and engineering background. During his career with the BBC, he was primarily associated with studio operations in the Television Service. His lecturing background included courses in TV production at a number of American universities.
His other books for Focal Press are Television Production, TV Scenic Design, Video Production Handbook and, in the Media Manuals series, Effective TV Production, Lighting for Video and Video Camera Techniques.

*A classic and definitive work

*Internationally acclaimed sourcebook

*Reflects current development in lighting technology

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-07-08

This is a marvelous book as an advanced course in lighting. It provides a classic grounding in light effects and light theory. I would characterize it as an intermediate to advanced text book, so it is not a good choice for those just starting out. And while it is chocked full of valuable information, the writting style is very much text book as well, so many people may find the presentation a bit dry. Be aware that the focus is more on television, although most of the advice applies to film as well. If your interest is digital cinema, then this would be a plus for you. The book is also beginning to show it's age in the section on lighting instruments. There are a number of instruments in common use today that are not covered in this book. That information, however, is readily available from manufacturers. Buy this book for it's timeless information on light and its critical importance in the look of TV and film.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-05-31

I'm about one third of the way through this book, and I'm really impressed! Most of the information is on lighting, but I'd never realized how important and complicated lighting could be. This book also covers some related topics for creating good looking video -- though I haven't gotten to those yet. The author has a lot of relevant technical expertise, and does a very good job of conveying that knowledge. No previous experience is required, but I wouldn't call this a beginner's book -- the depth of technical knowledge conveyed is impressive. This is a third edition, which tells you that "Lighting for TV and Film" has sold well over many decades.

4 out of 5 stars Lighting for Television and Film.......2001-01-22

This skilfully illustrated book is a practical guide to lighting for television and film. It covers the principals, techniques and equipment involved in lighting for single-camera location shoots, as well as multi-camera studio productions. It is an excellent handbook to help film students understand all aspects of lighting, but can be retained throughout your career in the motion picture industry for reference purposes. It starts off with the basics and gradually moves on to more complicated aspects of lighting. The emphasis is on the practical application of the theory behind lighting. In this respect it is full of examples of common problems and how to solve them in practice. It is clear that this book was written with the knowledge gained from years of practical lighting experience.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Book on Production; Little behind on modern technology.......2006-03-05

I wanted a book that would help my amateur videography skills. I decided to go with the Videomaker Guide based on its original Amazon rating, and the history of Videomaker magazines.

I found a lot of useful information in the book that I'm just starting to use such as lighting, filters, sound, and shooting angles. I've already started to apply the information from the book into a music video and a short film. So far, the information has been a plus, and I've used the book for reference to expand my amateur knowledge.

A minor negative on the book was that some chapters (back-to-back) seemed to state the same message. Although they were written with different examples, the same points were expressed.

A major negative on the book is that most technology and software that was referred to are about 3+ years behind. I was thinking some chapters might be updated to reflect the future of DVD production and using updated software video editing programs. However, there were no updated chapters. Lucky for me, most of my current knowledge of video editing is with today's software programs and hardware.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-02-23

I have not finished this book completely, but so far...so good. This book literally seems to cover every aspect of production. Whether you're fresh out of school or well established in the business, this is a great book to keep on hand.

Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-09-23

This book is excellent and extremly helpful. It is a great introductin to digial video production. The book is comprised of many short articles that give you all the ins-and-outs production. I use this book in my digital video editing class, it's a great reference!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quick reference!.......2004-09-21

The book is divided into 70+ short articles which makes it very easy to read. One can quickly jump to a subject of his interest.. ranging from pre-production, lighting and sound, camera and directing techniques, desktop editing, etc. A lot of valuable tips and tricks provided.

There is a "sidebar" section in most every article where some real-life examples are given.

In terms of post-production, it is suitable for people using Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book from a great magazine.......2004-06-29

I've been a fan and subscriber of Videomaker magazine for years and this book is an excellent compilation of recent articles and how-to's on all aspects of video production. I like that they have added information on DVD authoring to this edition, too. My only criticism is that it would be much better if it was illustrated in four color rather than black and white.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding guide to the Arriflex camera system.......2000-07-07

If you browse through Jon Fauer's latest book, THE ARRIFLEX 35 BOOK, the following statement from page 28 might catch your eye. "This funny looking tool (ARRI K.4.30689.0), which looks like a scissors mated with a platypus, can be..." One might wonder, what kind of technical manual this is? But as you read on, the validity of the text quickly becomes obvious and statements such as the above, elevate Jon Fauer's book above so many dry, and difficult to comprehend technical books. From the first page to the last, 358 pages bristle with the most thorough and detailed information. THE ARRIFLEX 35 BOOK is comprehensive, providing the reader with the know how required to use, maintain and care for the Arri family of cameras, one the world's most popular professional motion picture systems.

The informative, logically presented text, peppered with Jon's wry humor, is amply illustrated with hundreds of clear and precise drawings and photographs that leave nothing to the imagination. All available accessories, even home made ones, are discussed in this detailed and illustrated text. Even so, the book is not restricted to technical information alone. Useful information, such as shipping weights, Arriflex worldwide suppliers, and sales agents are listed with included addresses and phone numbers.

Additional information, shooting tips, and other equipment used in cinematography are discussed. Jon's enormous research compiles the knowledge of some of the top people in the industry. When added to his own vast experience, this book, "platypus" and all, is clearly the best, most important and necessary text to anyone who owns, maintains or works with Arriflex cameras. It is simply a must read for students and professionals alike.

Good work Jon! Thanks very much!

3 out of 5 stars not enough for beginers.......2007-02-13

I think this book covers alot of subjects, but the depth of each subject is very shallow. if I didn't know many of these things before reading this book I wouldn't understand more than half the explanaisions.
I still havn't finished reading because it's just not informitive enough

3 out of 5 stars Great little book that falls apart........2004-11-25

This is a handy little book which covers many technical aspects of video in one volume. It's been a great resource for my work and I'd recommend it to anyone who is technically minded and is interested in what makes things work and why things are the way they are with digital and analogue video. The reason I've given this particular book only 3 stars is that it has started to shed pages after only having been moderately read. The binding glue is brittle and the pages come flying out. Other than that it is a great book.

Book Description

The Technique of Film & Video Editing is the best training for aspiring directors, providing a detailed, precise look at the artistic and aesthetic principles and practices of editing for both picture and sound. Analysis of photographs from dozens of classic and contemporary films and videos provide a sound basis for the professional filmmaker and student editor. Practical skills are grounded by an exposition of the ideas and styles of editing through which the director can understand the visual tools at his or her disposal. This book puts into context the storytelling choices an editor will have to make against a background of theory, history, and practice.

The current edition brought this book to the cutting edge with such topics as new technology and its influence on the art of editing, MTV style, psychoanalytic ideas, and the appropriation of style over content. The new edition furthers these discussions by highlighting the "stylistic extremes" brought about by the clash of imitative style and innovative filmmaking. It continues the examination of MTV style via a study of the full spectrum of its uses in recent years. Additionally, it examines the editing characteristics of nonlinear storytelling as evidenced in such recent films as The Ice Storm and Thin Red Line. A new chapter addresses new trends in documentary.

* Offers a deeper discussion of MTV style editing
* Includes more on the appropriation of style
* Examines innovations in documentary

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction and survey of proven editing techniques .......2006-09-09

Now in an updated and expanded third edition, The Technique Of Film And Video Editing: History, Theory, And Practice by Ken Dancyger (Professor of Film and Television, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University) provides a thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction and survey of proven editing techniques and how those techniques influence the editing process, as well as presenting the history, theory, and aesthetics of editing in film and video. Nicely organized into three major sections (History of Film Editing; Editing for the Genre); and Principles of Editing), The Technique Of Film And Video Editing is enhanced with the inclusion of "Cutting Room Procedures", a filmography, a glossary, a selected bibliography for further study, and a comprehensive index. No film school or academic library film/video production instructional collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of The Technique Of Film And Video Editing as a core reference. Also very highly recommended for film students and aspiring film makers from Focal Press is Blain Brown's Cinematography: Image Making For Cinematographers, Directors, And Videographers (02-40805003, $44.99).

1 out of 5 stars It doesn't get worse.......2002-12-07

I just read a chapter from this book on DMN. Maybe the author has something interesting to say or maybe some new insights - I'll never know. The writing is so poor that each sentence needs to be dissected to be understood.

"In the world of the music video, real place is far less important. In fact, they are not as important as references to other media and other forms, to the landscapes of science fiction, and to the horror film." Huh? I'm guessing that "they" means "real place" and therefore should been "it is not as important..." But I am not sure that is what he meant. I've seen bad writing like this in user forums but never in a book. Did he have an editor?

I do have a book to recommend, though for the author, The Elements of Style. When you master that, try again but this time with an editor.

5 out of 5 stars 1st class.......2001-08-18

film, video, non-linear, linear - it's all pictures and sound. This book was everything i was looking for. It's not an explanation of how to edit. It's about how to think, how to dig deep inside your feelings and appy those feelings to the work you do. Forget the technicalities, forget the jargon, this is about asking yourself the question - what do i want the viewer to feel? It inspires you to think beyond what you know. I have been editing for a number of years - i am a better editor after reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Different Ways of Film Editing..........2000-12-15

This book will give you a general history of editing. Also you will find in "Editing for the genre" section examples of different film editing "styles" for different genres. Honestly the principles of editing section is very weak. Also the non linear editing topic is not covered in depth. The name can be confusing for some people: This book is NOT about the technique and There is almost nothing on "video" in it. It is about creative and aesthetical sides of editing with examples from well known directors like Kubrick, Hitchcock etc.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Sound for Film.......2007-09-18

This is my favorite book for film sound. David writes an excellent book that covers everything for film sound. He explains everything from before pre-production to print-mastering. My only problem with this book is that the chapter on Pro Tools is extremely dated and almost irrelevant. Having said that, there are a number of excellent Pro Tools books out there, but this is the only book that covers film sound in such detail. The accompanying DVD is a nice addition. This, along with Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures by John Purcell, is a must read for film sound editors. Directors and producers would also benefit from reading this book.
