Product Description
Picking up where Season 7 of the cult TV series left off, creator Joss Whedon expands on the Slayer's mythology if he had the opportunity to continue the show into an eighth season.
Since the destruction of the Hellmouth, the Slayers have gotten organized and are kicking some serious undead butt. But not everything's fun and firearms, as an old enemy reappears, and Dawn experiences some serious growing pains.

Miss Buffy the t.v. show.......2007-07-24
I really miss the Buffy t.v. show, so I decided to read the comic. It was very interesting, but it cost quite a bit for a brief 5 - 10 minute read. I don't know if I'll purchase the others, unless I can find them at their original cost.
Expecting More.......2007-07-18
I only recently discovered that there was a Season 8 written by Joss Whedon and I immediately purchased the first 5 issues. After reading this first volume I'm left wanting more, but not quite as satisfied as I had hoped. Comics are okay, but seeing this on tv is so much better. If this had to be written I think I would have preferred a regular book instead of a comic book. All in all I think the first comic is just okay, but I still look forward to reading volume 2.
Buffy's back better than ever!.......2007-07-01
Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 8 takes place right after the ending of Sunnydale. Buffy, Zander, and a giant Dawn return. A few of the other main characters are missing but Joss Whedon promises they will be returning in later issues.
I loved the artwork and plot line. I mean Joss Whedon helped write this so what's not to like?
Meh..........2007-06-06
I am a big fan of Buffy, so, when I found out Joss had released a comic which would reflect his vision of season 8, I was eager to purchase it. Well.... I can honestly say I didn't like it. I love the Buff-meister and all, but this seemed really silly and not quite up to par. I think the art also lends itself to the unreality. Every character looks like they are 13. Buffy should at least be in her mid twenties.
The plot is pretty simple stuff. Buffy is the leader of a teen group of slayers who fight vampires in the future. Dawn is attending Berkeley and has a really BIG problem. Willow wasn't in this issue. Xander is Buffy's manager. Not a heck of a lot happens.
I would pick up a few issues if I could get it in the bargain bin of my local comic shop. But I wouldn't rush out to pay full price. There are better comics out there.
Sure it's four years late, but I'll take it.......2007-04-17
*Possible spoilers within.*
I wonder if Joss Whedon originally had more story to tell after the end of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," or if he simply came up with more recently. As "Buffy" ended where he'd supposedly originally intended it to, but "Angel" was cancelled when Whedon expressedy stated that he had more story to tell, I would have expected him to continue "Angel" rather than "Buffy". (I still wish he would do so, and he has recently said that he's considering it.) However, I'll gobble up anything by Mr. Whedon, especially if it has something to do with the Buffyverse. And so when the first issue of the Season Eight comics was released, I devoured it. It's a tasty morsel indeed.
This season takes place a while after the epic finale of the TV show. The U.S. government, investigating the annihilation of Sunnydale, is now pursuing Buffy Summers, whom they consider to be a dangerous terrorist. Buffy herself is leading the thousands of Slayers currently in Europe in small groups, while the patched Xander Harris guides her from their base in Scotland. Obviously this is no small operation - in fact, it's huge.
Speaking of huge, Dawn Summers has recently lost her virginity to a "thricewise" - the result being Dawn's sudden growth spurt, from about five feet to about fifty feet. She's huge, unhappy, and currently housed in a warehouse where her tiny sister tries to sort things out with her. Buffy knows all about the repercussions of your "first time", but Dawn is waiting for Willow's return to vent. ("And anyhow Willow's the expert on boys since when now?" Buffy muses.)
In Part I of the season premiere, titled "The Long Way Home," Buffy battles a group of large, nasty beasts whose most recent victims appear to be members of a cult. (Expect a follow-up on that in future issues.) Meanwhile, in Sunnydale, government workers have unearthed someone from Buffy's past with a hankerin' for some vengeance. And cheese.
If the first issue is any indication, Season Eight of "Buffy" is gonna rock. Truly, this is going to be an absolute delight for any and all fans. Whedon's writing is as witty, creative, and shocking as ever, alluding to previous events and baddies like he so loves to do (and we love him to do) as well as the revelation from Season Five of "Angel" in which we learn that Buffy is currently dating some jerk called "the Immortal." Nope - that was one of three decoy Buffys used to throw enemies off her trail. As for the actual look of the comic, George Jeanty's artwork is excellent. Already he has the look of the characters down pat.
I was worried about how well "Buffy" would work as a comic as opposed to a TV show. I needn't have worried. "Buffy" works, and it works well. It's a blast to see the characters back, OFFICIALLY, and from Whedon's own hands at that. (In future issues, other writers from the series will be scripting the issues as well!) By all means, don't just go out and buy these, because they're selling like mad. Pre-order them well ahead of time so you can get your hands on some simply sumptuous "Buffy" action.
Buffy's back, and she's just as awesome as ever.

School Book.......2007-09-24
I am currently a student at a Community College which requires this book for it's Probablity & Statistics online class. It's an excellent book that works well.
Need texbook, can obtain...........2007-06-08
I received the book fairly quickly. The book was a little rough around the edges (advertised as good) and it is. The back outside spine was ripped and for that they could have drop the price a little more, but considering the price in the university book store was $118 (new), and $85 (used) - I could live with it. I believe that this is a fair assessment of the site. I would order a book from them again.
Not a helpful text.......2007-05-22
I just completed a class where this textbook was used, and found it to be a particularly poorly written text. I feel that because of this I did not do as well in the class as I had hoped. I am a Liberal Studies major and took this class to satisfy my mathematical requirement. I found the explanations and instructions to be confusing and incomplete. As this book appears to be aimed at individuals such as myself, I would think that simple and clear writing would be paramount for the authors. This proves to not be the case. Instructors, steer clear please.
EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR BEGINNING & ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES.......2002-02-07
I have been teaching out of Angel & Porter for the last three years. It has quite a few good examples, though I agree with the first reviewer's comment that it does need more challenging problems.
Among the topics I have covered are: inductive reasoning, set concepts, symbolic logic, truth tables, algebra, applied geometry, probability, statistics, and mathematics of finance. Though the examples are laid out fairly well for those who are mathematically inclined, the teacher who happens to have quite a few students with weak mathematical skills is often finding himself or herself in situations of having to create ways to become an effective expositor of mathematical theorems and applications. In other words, by trying to explain what the authors are providing in their examples, the instructor is frequently shouldering the added burden of making this book come to life not only from a mathematical perspective but also from a communicative standpoint.
On a positive note, however, there are several excellent applications, and the range of topics is quite broad. Oftentimes there is a gap between the level of advanced high school mathematics and that of a four-year university that is so serious that even a student who performed A's in high school will struggle in the type of college math course he or she is placed in. Fortunately, Angel and Porter have been able to fill in quite a few of the missing pieces.
Still incompetent after all these editions.......2002-01-15
A few years ago I wrote a review here on Amazon, of an edition of this text from around 1994. Apparently, only one of eight of those who commented found my review helpful. This new review is an attempt to be more helpful and to address the newer 6th edition.
Correctness is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for quality in mathematics text books. Usually the first condition in a given. The issues then largely become ones of whether or not the book is student friendly, whether it covers appropriate topics and so on. Angel and Porter's *Survey of Mathematics with Applications* fails on the criterion of correctness and hence one could reasonable say that the need for further evaluation on the other issues is moot.
In a circa 1994 edition, discussion on irrational numbers was misleading at best; even if not stated explicitly, the implication was that all reals belonged to a particular proper subset of the algebraic numbers. When I recently started to teach at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), Catonsville, where the text was being used, I immediately turned to discussion of this topic. There on page 214 of this 6th edition, only three paragraphs into my reading, was a fallacy: "The points on the real number line that are not rational numbers are referred to as irrational numbers. Recall that every rational number is either a terminating or a reaping decimal number. *Therefore* [italics mine], irrational numbers, when represented as decimal numbers, will be nonterminating, nonrepeating numbers." All Q are (T or R), *therefore* all that is not Q is not (T or R). Perhaps this could be used as an example in the earlier chapter on logic. Since I was only three paragraphs into my reading of this new edition when I encountered this miscarriage of logic, it made quite an impression on me.
The text is replete with errors where the errors are of such a nature as to suggest that the authors really just aren't that good with math or are extremely careless. Some more examples:
Page 584: "If an event has *equally likely outcomes* [original italics]...," where it should say rather "If every outcome in the sample space is equally likely..."
Since the circa 1994 edition, where there was an error regarding conditional probability and the probability of independent events, the authors seem to have attempted to rescue themselves from embarrassment by insertion of a footnoted remark (page 615), but the presentation makes the most bizarre contortions of meaning, notation and caveats: "P(A and B)=P(A)P(B), assuming that event A has occurred*," the asterisk referring to a footnote where it stated that by 'P(B)' they mean P(B|A). But then what do we call P(A)? But the problem does not end there.
Page 293, exercise 43: The answer in the book fails to take into consideration that the dB scale is logarithmic. Given an inverse square dissipation of sound energy, loudness would increase from 20 dB at 6 feet to 26 dB at 3 feet, not to 80 dB.
Page 49, exercise 16: The answer says zero is not equal to the empty set. But that is the way zero, the smallest ordinal, is defined in modern set theory.
An analogy to falling dominos is often used to illustrate mathematical induction. Why, on page 3, do the authors use a domino analogy to illustrate inductive reasoning? It would be a bad idea to use falling dominos to illustrate inductive reasoning since the same example is classically used to illustrate mathematical induction and the two distinct concepts have similar names and are frequently confounded by students, who incorrectly assume that mathematical induction is a form on inductive reasoning. But I suspect that that the authors themselves are not clear on the distinction. It fits with the evidence. Furthermore, the book gives definitions of inductive and deductive reasoning (pages 3 and 4) that are antiquated and should be dispensed with in favor of common contemporary usage among mathematicians and logicians (see http://www.iep.utm.edu/d/ded-ind.htm for a nice brief discussion on the meaning of inductive and deductive logic).
Often the incorrect content is on non-mathematical subjects:
On page 3: "...no two people have the same fingerprints or DNA." Well, of course, up to mutations, monozygotic twins have the same DNA.
Page 9: "Little mistake, Big Discovery... The red dot represent the area *near America* [italics mine], the Canary Islands, where [Christopher] Columbus landed." Yes, on the map, the dot is closer to where North American should be than it is to Africa. But, I suppose, canaries might migrate. It continues, "He estimated 56.6 miles to a degree instead of the approximately 61.6 miles that it should have been. This resulted in a mile equaling about 4848 ft compared with our 5280 ft per mile. The outcome of this miscalculation put India about 3900 miles west of Spain, more or less where the Americas happen to be." Let's see: (61.6/56.6)*3900 miles = 4245 miles from Spain to India (westward). That's more like it. Of course, the real story is more complicated.
Page 579: "The Royal Disease....even though both males and females are carriers, the disease [hemophilia] afflicts only males." While much more likely to afflicts males, the disease does afflict females inheriting two X clotting deficient chromosomes.
There is a list of over 30 reviewers with six having reviewed the 6th edition. Does anyone care?
I brought a number of these errors to the attention of the Addison Wesley sales representative who deals with our math department. She took notes on the examples I pointed out - I thought to her credit. Apparently she did some investigation of the errors but came back to me saying, "...but the students won't know." Addison Wesley had a tradition of publishing many fine engineering, math and science texts. They appear to have little editorial integrity now, however.
CCBC, Catonsville no longer uses this text. We now use one written by one of the reviewers of the Angel and Porter text, another member of the textbook industry. That book is also published by Addison Wesley and makes the same mistake in defining inductive and deduction reasoning as the Angel/Porter text does. It is my opinion that our department is unduly influence by the Addison Wesley sales representatives.
I'm sure that writing a good textbook is hard work. I have considered writing one myself and no doubt, the first edition will contain some error. But I would not apply a standard of criticism to the text under review that I would feel unfair if applied to myself.
I hope that the reader finds this brief review helpful.

Poor quality, no LabMentor CD bunded with Amazon.......2007-08-29
Its not Amazon's fault that this book isn't really good. The information contained inside it is out of date, written during the time of XP's release.
The major drawback is this book does not contain the LabMentor Online Lab disk, which prevents me from completing most of the course work for me class.
Lousy book!!.......2007-05-31
This book is awful, asks questions in chapter reviews that are either not in the book or in another chapter. I wasted untold hours of my life in this book.I have strongly recomended that the school I attend stop using this worthless piece of trash.
Buy something else.......2007-02-18
Badly organized and practice questions are compatible with the material. One minute, the author is talking about one subject, then the next, the author changes the subject. Then later in the book the author will bring up a separate section aimed and explaining more of the first topic that was being discussed earlier in the book.
The questions on the end of the chapter are mostly based on interpretation of material rather than understanding. When you search the book for answers, you wont find the exact answer within the reading, you'll find material about the answer, then its up to you on how well you'll interpret it to come up with the right answer. The author also seems to contradict himself/herself, or purposely confuse you. When discussing SYSPREP, one minute the author says that its a system imaging program, and the next the author says that SYSPREP not and that SYSPREP requires third-party imaging programs.
It seems as if the author also wants you to do extra in-depth research on material, because some of the answers to the questions you don't get unless you experiment with it.
Worth avoiding.......2007-01-25
MS Windows' worst critics consider the OS to be a series series of poorly executed upgrades and patches to the original release. Whether or not it is the case with the software, it is particularly true of this book. Obviously starting life as an MSCSE manual for an earlier OS, the Guide reads like it has been undergoing a series of fragmentary, ad hoc rewrites in an effort to keep it relevant at the lowest possible cost to the publisher. There are many sections where the book gives in-depth coverage to outdated technologies and glosses over (or ignores) essential current topics. The writing is uninspired to say the least; it reads like an old IBM COBOL manual from the 70's. The writer is constantly falling into a maddeningly passive voice and ignoring many other rules of technical writing style. In spite of the copious errata files available for download from the publisher, there are still a disconcerting number of typos, errors and omissions. The book is clearly aimed at an audience intent on memorizing facts needed to pass an exam rather than helping the reader understand the OS. If you're a student and see this book on a syllabus, try to find another class. For the price, the Microsoft Press book is a far better value.
Good XP Pro book.......2007-01-13
I also bought this book for a tech class. I got a lot of information about XP Pro from it. I found it easy to read despite it being a tech book. I especially liked the activities in each chapter. There must have been about 7 activities in each chapter, some had more and others maybe 6 activies. It gave me a chance to try out what I was learning. I found the review questions, the vocabulary lists, and the summaries at the end of each chapter useful in helping me retain the information I learned. I give it a 4 star because I had to tape the book binding and a few pages that became loose.

This novel reveals more about the Battle of Gettysburg than any piece of learned nonfiction on the same subject. Michael Shaara's account of the three most important days of the Civil War features deft characterizations of all of the main actors, including Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Buford, and Hancock. The most inspiring figure in the book, however, is Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, whose 20th Maine regiment of volunteers held the Union's left flank on the second day of the battle. This unit's bravery at Little Round Top helped turned the tide of the war against the rebels. There are also plenty of maps, which convey a complete sense of what happened July 1-3, 1863. Reading about the past is rarely so much fun as on these pages.
Book Description
"My favorite historical novel...A superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant."
JAMES M. McPHERSON
Author of BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM
Winner of the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for fiction
In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation's history, two armies fought for two dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Shattered futures, forgotten innocence, and crippled beauty were also the casualties of war. Unique, sweeping, an unforgettable, THE KILLER ANGELS is a dramatic re-creation of the battleground for America's destiny.

If you have the slightest interest in the Civil War, don't fail to read the late Michael Shaara's book "The Killer Angels".......2007-10-04
If you have the slightest interest in the Civil War, don't fail to read the late Michael Shaara's book "The Killer Angels". It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1974.
For some reason this book had never crossed my path. It wasn't until Father's Day this year that I was even aware of its existence. My 27 year old son gave me a DVD that had both Gods and Generals and Gettysburg on it. In reading the jacket of the DVD I saw the movie was based on this book. After watching the movie, I headed off to the library. I was not disappointed.
This volume shows both the courage and determination of both the Union and Confederate soldiers. It examines the story from both viewpoints. You are told the story through the key leadership of the battle. You will read about Robert E. Lee. You will learn what his decisions were based on. You will see why he was so beloved by his army. The book allows you to be present as Lee struggles with decision after decision from his headquarters. You can feel the frustration of Longstreet as he tries to convince Lee that defense is a better choice. You will get a picture of the flamboyant Pickett. You will feel Lee's and Longstreet's frustration with J.E.B. Stuart. I met a new hero in the book - Joshua Lawrence Chamberlin as I read about the 20th Maine Regiment and Chamberlain who with a bayonet charge on Little Big Top to hold the end of the Union line. Another new hero I encountered was General John Buford. You will experience his anguish as he decides to engage Rebel forces. He knows that he was seriously outnumbered. He is determined to save the only high ground in the area.
I was emotionally involved in the book from the beginning to the end. This is the book that blurs the line between historical fiction and creative non-fiction. It is simply great reading. While the movie was good, the book is great. Michael Shaara had the vision, did the research, and wrote one of the best books ever. Thank you!
Glorifies Battle, but Does So Compellingly. . . .......2007-10-01
I am not a civil war buff, but I enjoy historical fiction, and I decided to read this book for its Pulitzer Prize and what it might teach me about the Battle of Gettysburg. On these fronts it delivered as advertised. Although the book is about 90% brooding and waiting for battle and only 10% battle, the writing is compelling enough to hold one's interest through the brooding and to teach me more than I ever knew about the strategies, generals, turning points, blunders and significance of Gettysburg --- or at least the author's views on these points.
Nonetheless, I found myself consistently detatched from the characters and the action. The story is told exclusively from the perspective of the officers in the battle and, for the most part, from that of the southern officers. This is not to say it has a southern bias; indeed blame is placed on Southern hero Lee and the book elevates Southern "scoundrel" Longstreet. It is just that, ultimately, I was not capable of sympathy or admiration for their bravery, honor and nobility, in which the book invests heavily. My own views about slavery and the south are just too strong. Its like reading about the qualms and struggles of German aristocrats in the Nazi army. Interesting, but they are so fundamentally on the wrong side that neither admirable traits nor understanding of their perspective can produce empathy, redemption or even forgiveness. And, as to the horrors of war and soldiering, the gritty, more soldier oriented view of, say, a Cold Mountain, remained foremost in my mind.
excellent book, even if you are not a buff.......2007-08-12
I remember seeing the movie "Gettysburg" when it first opened
in the early nineties. It magnificently brought to life the "glory"
and tragedy of thousands of men in a napoleonic charge. The
book matches the movie in that respect, but it also provides
insights into the motives of several of the main participants in
a way that a movie cannot (mostly generals Lee and Longstreet
on one side and Colonel Chamberlain on the other). My understanding
is that the book is as true to history as a novelization can be.
However, it is also extremely readable - I wish somebody pointed
me to it when I was reading about the civil war in highschool.
I am looking forward to reading Jeff Shaara's two books that
complete the trilogy.
Historical Fiction at it's Best.......2007-07-28
Ever wonder what it was really like those 3 days in July at the Battle of Gettysburg? Was it hot, what did the men wear, what did they eat, how did they pass the time, who were the leaders of the regiments? Good historical fiction brings characters to life. Great historical fiction like that of Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Shaara makes you believe you are there.
You've learned about the battle in school, now read Killer Angels and feel what is was like to be part of the battle. Read about Robert E. Lee, what his decisions were based on and why he was so beloved by his army. Be present as he struggles with decision after decision from his headquarters. Feel the frustration of Longstreet as he tries to convince Lee of another course. Learn about the flamboyant Pickett and the egocentric J.E.B. Stuart. Go to the Union camp and read about the 20th Maine Regiment and Chamberlain who with sheer determination hold the precious ground on Little Big Top with a bayonet charge. Imagine and feel Buford's decision to engage Rebel forces, knowing that he was seriously outnumbered but determined to save the only high ground in the area.
I was mesmerized and emotionally involved in the book from the beginning to the end. It isn't just a story of a battle, it's the story of our nation and the men who fought and died for what they believed in. A great novel!
Great book!.......2007-07-03
THe Killer Angels makes the battle of Gettysburg come alive for the reader. Shaara takes historical facts and injects the human dimension which makes the novel both educational and a page turner. Highly recommend that people of all ages read this masterpiece and immerse themselves in the most turbulent period of our nation's history.

It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller--think Katherine Neville's The Eight (but cleverer) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but more accessible).
Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches, and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilization.
Brown seems as much juggler as author--there are lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, yet Brown manages to hurl the reader headlong into an almost surreal suspension of disbelief. While the reader might wish for a little more sardonic humor from Langdon, and a little less bombastic philosophizing on the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal flaws than niggling annoyances--readers should have no trouble skimming past them and immersing themselves in a heck of a good read. "Brain candy" it may be, but my! It's tasty. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
An ancient secret brotherhood. A devastating new
weapon of destruction. An unthinkable target.
World-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a cryptic symbol seared into the chest of a murdered physicist. Desperate to save the Vatican from a powerful time bomb, Langdon joins forces in Rome with the beautiful and mysterious scientist Vittoria Vetra. Together they embark on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth . . . the long-forgotten Illuminati lair.

Customer Reviews:
Angels & Demons & Bishops ... oh, my!.......2007-10-03
Let's get this out of the way right from the start: I picked up ANGELS & DEMONS at the behest of dozens of friends who -- on the tails of THE DAVINCI CODE movie -- spent the better part of several weeks arguing which book (DAVINCI or A&D) would make better fodder from cinema entertainment. Yes, most of them argued that ANGELS was far more 'filmable,' and, having not yet read DAVINCI, I'm in no position to debate that. Loved the subject matter (I've always been a bit of a conspiracy nut, and ANGELS provides more than ample proving ground for topics relating to the ever elusive Illuminate as well as fringe Catholicism and future science), loved the characters (Robert Langdon seems and sounds like a bona fide college professor / academic, and Vittoria Vetra made a pleasant sidekick / love interest), and loved the premise (I've always been a sucker for race-against-the-clock narratives, and ANGELS delivers pretty solidly on that count).
However, the book tries way too often to vacillate between the philosophical arguments of religion versus science when author Dan Brown should've done like everyone suggests: pick a side, and run with it. Too much time is spent on the fence -- the middleground reserved for centrists or realists who prefer to pick-and-choose what to and what not to believe based on convenience -- when I wouldn't have faulted Brown for just deciding "'A' is going to be the truth for this novel, and I'll stick with it." It's easier to get past some of the lesser inconsistencies OR major incredulities when, at the very least, you've chosen a side and put your stake in the ground. At some points, Langdon believes ... and then he doesn't again. Sure, I think it's comfy; you avoid offending the audience by presenting a main character who's struggling with these moral dilemmas (just like you and me!) ... but, as I'm inclined to give the book a pass due to the delicate subject matter, I won't go on with that point.
Also, Brown didn't quite handle the real-time element in the latter half of the novel. At the beginning, Robert Langdon is in the realm of science, so it's forgivable to have him jetting from one side of the world to the other in one hour, but racing throughout Rome in only a matter of minutes given the fact that there are, allegedly, hundreds of thousands of folks obviously cluttering the streets around the Vatican? Seems a bit of a stretch to me. Also, the hearty Langdon performs with such athletic prowess that a Navy Seal would blush. Langdon's last brush with death totally killed my ability to suspend disbelief ... and I'll leave that little moment for your own discovery.
Incidentally, I've read somewheres that the folks behind Fox TV's stellar program "24" were interested in acquiring the rights to ANGELS & DEMONS at some point in the book's history, and I don't find that hard to believe in the slightest. Much of the book is told in the same kind of hectic frantic incredible pace of one of the better seasons of that program, so fans of Jack Bauer should take interest in exploring the book if for no other reason than to see what could have been.
Stupid and Mass Marketed.......2007-09-30
Thank God there are others out there who appreciate the sheer stupidity of this book -- and Brown's other book, the Da Vinci Code. I bought both through a price club, sadly believing the buzz which surrounded them. I was expecting an interesting, engaging read, along the lines of best sellers I have read in England. I have to be honest -- I put the book down after reading a few pages. One reviewer posted the many, numerous factual errors. What is more astounding is the many reviewers who defended such factual errors. The first few pages of this book were inane, vacuous, and glib. Nothing intelligent, riveting, rigorous, compelling about them at all. I leafed through the rest of the book, looking for interesting parts -- and it was more or less the same. I did not see any interesting detours into philosophical, historical excavations or reflections....or depth any kind really. The back of the books shows a picture of David Brown, who looks as happy as if he had discovered the Happy Meal (at McDonalds) and is gleeful that million are buying his garbage and proclaiming it to be haute cusine.
This is one stupid, ridiculous book marketed and hyped to the masses. Brown is not a gifted writer, though he can write. But genius, ground breaker he is not. THere is nothing remarkable or extraordinary or even remotely interesting about this book.
The fact that so many in America love it reflects how dumbed down this country really is. The people who defend it dont realize how dumb they really are. Ignorance is bliss (and apparently quite profitable) in America!!
Well beyond the skills of negative reviewers.......2007-09-29
This book should be examined under two points of view, factuality and writing skills. And it must be kept in mind that it was written not to be a literary classic of any depth, but a seller.
No doubt, it is implausible and poorly researched. Dan Brown knows little about Rome, the Vatican, Physics, History, Geography and Canon Law. He knows no Italian and absolutely no Arabic. He tells us that the Camerlengo (actually a senior cardinal) is, at the same time, the young personal assistant to the Pope and the "Vice-Pope", and depicts a CERN, a Rome and a Vatican that do not exist. Even in the corrected later edition that I have read, his Italian words are often misspelled, his Italian sentences always clumsy or incorrect. He can't write the Arabic word for "two" or "good", and makes many other ludicrous mistakes. But do these mistakes really matter? Are they really "mistakes"? I don't think so. Most simply, Dan Brown doesn't care. He writes popular fiction, and lets facts serve him, knowing full well that the great majority of his readers cannot detect the mistake, cannot tell the lie from the truth, and will hail his vast knowledge and his deep research. Yes, he's not a scholar, but is shrewd, and knows his job.
However, is he also a gifted writer? Well, I have read very many literary works in my life, most of them by great authors, and I can't concede he's such a poor writer. The plot, the dialogues, the settings, the descriptions, even the characters, are not that bad. He writes very simply, but he intends to. He can't sculpture larger-than-life men or women in his books, and can't create a really gripping and fascinating story. But who can, anyway? John Grisham, or Robert Ludlum, or Tom Clancy, or Frederick Forsyth, or Robert Harris, or Ken Follett, or Martin Cruz Smith, or Matthew Reilly?
Sure, he's no Umberto Eco. But Umberto Eco is a scholar, and writes more to impress his readers than to make money. Dan Brown writes only to make money, and has made a huge lot of it.
Dan Brown's Best Book Yet!.......2007-09-24
I absolutely loved "Angels and Demons"! It is very action-packed, makes the reader think, is filled with surprises, and has a satisfying ending. I would and do recommend this book to everyone. The themes include science and religion, but in a unique way that if you're not a big fan of either, the story is just as good. Another theme is secret-societies, which I found very interesting. It is a great book for people who like to figure things out and be intellectually challenged. Brown's style of writing is enjoyable and the level of difficulty is average, so many people will enjoy this book. I really liked "Angels and Demons," because it caught my interest from the first page and held it all the way through. It is a great read. I highly and definitely recommend it!
OK action-thriller for passing time, but don't expect much more.......2007-09-23
In typical Dan Brown style, this book is all about creating action and suspense using blood, violence, a bit superstition, a little creative rewriting of history and some far fetched sci-fi, rather than creating a story that makes any sense. It's serves its purpose as a page-turner for passing idle time, but don't expect any scientific, geographical, linguistical og historical accuracy. It's so full of factual errors and self-contradicting statements that it sometimes switches from an action-thriller to a comedy. But if you're able to shut out reality for a few hours, there's some action packed time waiting for you just around the next page.

5 Stars - The perspective of a teen.......2007-09-18
While I am 22, I can honestly say that this book is not written for my age. I feel that the bad reviews that it may have gotten are stimulated and struck down by people outside of its targeted age group (Ages 10 to 15). As an adult I do not think I appreciated this book the way a teen would have. To me it was all mediocre reading, but to a teen it would be action packed and slammed with thrills and excitement. I was sold merely by its cover and soon found that I was out of the range for its targeted audience. For those teens that are in that targeted range I think you will love this book. For those parents whom have children that are interested in science-fiction then I recommend this book. For adults themselves I would not recommend this book due to its elementary storyline. For we, as adults, could not truly accept it for its real value.
Quick fun romp.......2007-09-16
As with most of James Patterson's work, this book is not the next contender for the Pulitzer, but it is a quick fun read, expecially for young adults seeking something outside of the Harry Potter urban fantasy vein that has taken over YA lit in the last few years.
These characters are wise beyond their years from living on the lam for so long but they're written so that it's obvious that they're still kids rather than adults in little bodies. In a way, this is Cynthia Voight's Homecoming with an edge.
Not a complete story - INREDIBLY annoying lack of ending.......2007-08-31
OK. I actually FOUND a copy of this book in a vacation house. I started reading and got into the story. And then the freaking book just ENDS without resolving anything. Whoever thought this was a good idea is a PUTZ. Yes, I know there are sequels, but I feel misled and SUPER ANNOYED!
My14 year old loved this book.......2007-08-24

I BOUGHT IT HOPING HE WOULD BE INTERESTED AND READ IT. WELL-HE COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN AND IS NOW READING THE SECOND BOOK. I AM SAD THAT THIS SERIS IS ONLY A TRILOGY. I HOPE HE WRITES SOME MORE PARTS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN MY SON SO EXCITED ABOUT A BOOK.I HAVE NOT READ IT BUT I THINK I WILL.
Book Description
Contacting Your Spirit Guide is divided into two parts. In the first section, Sylvia Browne helps you find your spirit guidesthe entities who are designated by you and God to assist you with life and give you guidance. You will not only learn how to tune in to this guide or guides, but you'll also see how you can recognize who they are, the messages they can give you, and even discern what their names are so you'll know how to refer to them.
In the second part of the book ("A Day in the Life of a Spirit Guide"), Sylvia writes intimately about her spirit guides, Francine and Raheim. For example, she explains how Francine first contacted her, how she (Sylvia) first went into trance mediumship, and reveals personal tidbits about her relationship with this guide.

Like this one a lot.......2007-10-03
I am always intrigued by Francine and always want to know more about her. I love this book. As far as being able to get in touch with my guide, I have not tried the excersices yet, but still is worth reading. It went so fast. I could not keep my eyes of it.
Contacting the other side.......2007-08-25
I loved the book and used the CD. I was surprised to see that my Spirit Guide seemed to be a male - somehow, I'd just assumed it would be a female. I am familiar with her books and look forward to reading more and using the CD again when it's quiet. I am 70 years old and not at all afraid of death.
NEVER GOT IT!!!.......2007-07-28
I was EXTREMELY upset with this purchase! I never received the product and event after pestering continuously I never got a refund or my book! wft?....Don't buy from this seller!
Sylvia Brown "Guide" is on target!.......2007-07-08
Sylvia Brown's "Contacting Your Spirit Guide" is most interesting and comforting! It is my first Sylvia Browne book, and despite her tougher exterior as seen on her Montel appearances, she is a gentle and evolved human being. She introduces us to "life after death" and basically explains how it is on "the other side". She presents a believable case to ensure us that we never die, but live on. She obtains information from Francine, her spirit guide who tells us of life after life! Her accompanying CD is very comforting and good for meditation, yoga-stretching, etc. I believe this is a very important, informative book. How can she top this one!?!
Spirits connection.......2007-06-08
I have enjoyed this a great deal. I enjoy Sylvia's books and it is very enlightening to read about her experiences and her views and to know she is a very spiritual person.
Book Description
Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, by author Dan Brown, have deceived millions of people across the world with a plethora of lies about the one true God, Christianity, the Holy Bible, and the Christian Church. Dan Brown has achieved this by presenting the elements in his novels under the guise of fiction, while at the same time, claiming that they are factual. But even Brown's "facts," which he maintains are historically informed, are full of inaccuracies and historical discrepancies. What Dan Brown is describing in Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code can most certainly not be categorized as fiction, because in reality, the core and foundation of his writing is Theological and Christological. However, the Theology and Christology which Dan Brown has incorporated into his novels is a false Theology and Christology?-?it is grossly distorted and stridently far from the truth. This apologetic work sets out to provide the true Theological and Christological teachings of the Holy Orthodox Church in response to the deceptions in the selected writings of Dan Brown.

Customer Reviews:
A must have if you start with IMS.......2007-07-11
Possibly the best technical book I've ever read.
I work with IMS technology and we use the book in our department to introduce IMS to newcomers. But I also work in European projects on IMS and the book is the main reference for most of the other teams involved.
You just need this book and the 3GPP specifications for anything you want to do with IMS.
Very Good Book.......2006-11-18
This is a very good book on SIP-based Internet Multimedia Subsystem. The book nicely depicts both the Internet and the IMS architecture implementation of SIP, AAA, VoIP centric security and policy, QoS, presence service, media encoding and transport, and instant messaging. By reviewing this book, a reader will acquire comprehensive knowledge of emerging VoIP and Video Telephony Layer 5 architecture in wireless network. The book can be used as a senior or master-level text book, a useful review guide for the provider engineers, architects, technology strategist, product managers, and technical managers. SIP programmers, implementers, and standard engineers may find the book "not detailed enough". Since technology described in this book and their standards are rapidly changing, authors need to keep the book regularly updated.
Sohel Khan, Principal Technology Strategist, Sprint-Nextel
A mixed bag.......2006-08-23
This book intends to be the de facto handbook for IMS, but it ends up being mostly reference material.
While it has some fairly detailed descriptions of the standards and protocols involved, it does not go beyond the specifications already publicly available, or the methods that some vendors already use. Some chapters read like a translation of technical drafts, while others concerning less defined areas are very high level.
The authors, while doing a good job assembling useful information, probably set out to write this book too early, when IMS was still only a reference framework, without widespread service provider adoption. Furthermore, the corresponding expertise across the industry is missing, thus making this a less elaborate view on the services that IMS would provide, compared to what the book's subtitle would suggest.
If you need a book on IMS right now, and are not happy with the abundance of online materials, buy this book. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide on what IMS means for providers and customers, I personally have not read such a book yet - but even if it has not been released, it is only a matter of time. Keep your eyes peeled for snippets of information coming out of service providers and infrastructure vendors, and for the ongoing debates in the industry around the evolution of the service delivery platform.
Good book but bad index..........2006-02-23
The book is good, expensive but good.
However I'm very disappointed about the index (the alphabetical word list place at the end of the book). Lots of important key words are not listed in the index, which makes the reading difficult. Camarillo, please improve the index!!!
I've also noticed some mis-writings , spelling errors (not mayor issues)
Of course a basic background in telecommunications is needed in order to follow the book, if you do not have that basic knowledge then I do recommend to have the books "Understanding Telecommunications 1 and 2" (Ericsson) by the side when reading Camarillo's book.
IMS - Revealed From the Inside.......2005-10-03
The 3G IMS book provides a look at IMS organization and SIP signaling from one of the people who were there while the protocols were being established. Since this is an emerging and still developing technology, the little insights like "this is what we intended to do here", and "this is where we want this eventually to go" will be emminently helpful in choosing equipment and network organizations.
I have to describe to customers how they might use IMS equipment and integratit into their networks. While this is no engineering level document, it is solid at describing the interfaces they will have to support. I think they will be assured by the information I now have to give them.
This is a bit pricey and the editing a bit sloppy, but then I find that the rule rather than exception with a lot of the inside information manuals.
This will be of great use and I hope it will arm me to be able to comfort customers that this architecture just might work.

Michael Connelly, whose novel The Poet won the 1997 Anthony Award for Best Mystery, is already recognized as one of the smartest and most vivid scribes of the hard-boiled police procedural. Now, with his much-anticipated sixth Harry Bosch novel, Angels Flight, Connelly offers one of the finest pieces of mystery writing to appear in 1998. Bosch is awakened in the middle of the night and, out of rotation, he is assigned to the murder investigation of the high-profile African American attorney Howard Elias. When Bosch arrives at the scene, it seems that almost the entire LAPD is present, including the IAD (the Internal Affairs Division). Elias, who made a career out of suing the police, was sadistically gunned down on the Angels Flight tram just as he was beginning a case that would have struck the core of the department; not surprisingly, L.A.'s men and women in blue become the center of the investigation. Haunted by the ghost of the L.A. riots, plagued by incessant media attention, and facing turmoil at home, Bosch suddenly finds himself questioning friends and associates while working side by side with some longtime enemies.
Angels Flight is a detective's nightmare scenario and is disturbingly relevant to the racially tense last decade of the 20th century. Amidst the twists and turns of his complex narrative, Connelly affirms his rightful place among the masters of contemporary mystery fiction. --Patrick O'Kelley

The man most hated by the LAPD--a black lawyer who has made his name by bringing lawsuits alleging racism and brutality by police officers--has been found murdered on the eve of a high-profile trial. The list of suspects includes half the police force. And Harry Bosch is the detective chosen to head the investigation The political dangers of the case are huge. If it's not investigated fairly, the public outcry could make the Rodney King riots look tame. But a full investigation will take Bosch into the ugliest corners of law enforcement. To make matters worse, Bosch's wife Elizabeth has disappeared overnight. Bosch fears she has left him--or succumbed further to her gambling addiction. He's not sure which is worse. Angels Flight reads in a white heat. It continues to up the ante of the series that is "raising the hard-boiled detective novel to a new level . . . adding substance and depth to modern crime fiction." (Boston Globe)
Customer Reviews:
Taut mystery.......2007-09-12
This novel is the latest in the "Harry Bosch" mysteries. Mr. Bosch is a hard boiled Los Angeles detective, whose life is far from perfect. His detective skills though, are wonderful.
I loved this book. The police procedures were entirely believable, and as an Angeleno, I enjoyed the accuracy of Mr. Connelly's descriptions of L.A.
I highly recommend this great read. It will not disappoint!
Disappointing.......2007-08-05
pros:
usual Harry Bosch character
cons:
opening crime not very interesting.
tension between Harry's crew and IAD not very engaging.
plot moves ahead sluggishly.
I had to give up reading this at p. 170 of 454.
As usual, minimal character development. Emphasis is merely on plot. I saw little of Harry's personal life, except for his occasional attempts to call his wife. (But this is true of ALL Michael Connelly books. And I usually put up with it.)
Racial politics and murder in LA.......2007-07-27
Edgar and Anthony award-winner Connelly takes a high dive right into the turbulent currents of Los Angeles' racial tensions in this Detective Harry Bosch appearance.
On the eve of a major lawsuit against the LAPD, high-profile civil-rights lawyer Howard Elias is shot. "Bosch thought about all the suspects there would be, many of them standing around outside at that very moment, watching." The obvious suspects are the police; and the black populace, on the brink of rioting, demands action.
Suing the police for beating a confession out of a (black) suspected (white) child murderer, since acquitted, Elias has polarized the city. But Bosch soon discovers that the lawyer had more going for him than racial politics; he had evidence - evidence that the accused child killer, still presumed guilty, was truly innocent. Elias was confident of victory, but his big secret died with him.
Find the secret, find Elias' killer, Bosch realizes. But retracing Elias' steps proves difficult, especially with the police stonewalling, the black community clamoring, and Elias' files off-limits. With adroit compassion, Connelly ("Blood Work," "The Black Echo") explores the complexities of racial politics, using the hidden passions and public maneuvering to heighten suspense.
Meanwhile, his wife's gambling habit is draining their marriage and city anger is nearing explosion. Bosch steps on toes and strains friendships as he pursues the sordid human mystery, unrelated but now at the core of all this political fury.
Thoughtful, suspenseful, masterfully plotted and well written - as readers have come to expect from Connelly.
CONNELLY EXAMINES RACE RELATIONS IN LA.......2006-09-02
Bosch is back. A high-profile, black, civil right attorney is slain and Harry Bosch is given the assignment to find the murderer. To those unfamiliar with Detective Bosch, he is not a "go along to get along" guy. He tells it like he sees it even if it rankles the Chief of Police, the FBI or other police officers. That is much of the fun in reading a Harry Bosch novel. And I use the word "novel" in its literary sense; Mr. Connelly has written a novel in ANGEL'S FLIGHT, not a police procedural, although it is a wonderful example of that as well. ANGEL's FLIGHT is really about race relations in Los Angeles and about police-minority relations in particular. The murder mystery in ANGEL'S FLIGHT is just the hat tree on which to hang the fedora of political and racial insights. This is the sixth in the Bosch series and the best-written so far (I am reading them in the order published); Mr. Connelly keeps growing as a writer. For me, the ending was just a little two pat in terms of poetic as well as legal justice being served to make this a five-star book, but one reads Mr. Connelly to learn about Harry Bosch and see him in action more than anything else. At least I do.
Pretty close to perfect..........2006-08-24
Angels Flight was the first Michael Connelly/Harry Bosch book that I read and when I picked it up four years ago, I realized that Connelly was no ordinary mystery writer. It took three more years to finally read the rest of this series, and since finishing them all, I wanted to go back and reread Angels Flight as I didn't remember much of what happened. Not only did I enjoy it just as much the second time around, but it remains one of my very favorite Bosch mysteries.
Howard Elias in a black civil rights lawyer who has made a name for himself suing the LAPD (this is a post Rodney King/OJ Los Angeles). One of his clients is Michael Harris, a man who was acquitted of kidnapping and murdering a young girl, Stacey Kincaid. He is now suing 15 members of the LAPD's Robbery and Homicide Division (RHD) for torturing him in trying to obtain a confession. Two days before the trial is to open, Elias is murdered. There are a whole bunch of cops who would like to see Elias dead and the citizens of LA believe a man in blue did the killing. They expect that the LAPD will close ranks and engage in a cover-up to protect their own. Tempers are raging and the city is on the verge of riots. Normally, this high profile case would fall to RHD. But since they're all suspects, it is given to Harry Bosch and his partners, Kiz Rider and Jerry Edgar. IAD and the FBI are also put on the case, which makes things more interesting and more complicated.
Bosch discovers that during the Michael Harris trial, Elias was planning to expose the real killer in the Stacey Kincaid murder. He decides to go back to square one in the Kincaid murder, believing that the killer of Kincaid and Elias are the same person. In the course of the investigation, Bosch is shocked at what he discovers--from a child pornography ring to the bad judgment of those he thought he knew and trusted. Through it all, the LAPD is trying to whitewash anything detrimental to the force.
Connelly writes with true feeling and with the knowledge of one who has lived in LA and written the crime beat there. When Kiz Rider picks up on Bosch's personal problems, Bosch muses "Her having picked up on his personal turmoil was a testament to her skill as a detective--reading people was always more important than reading clues." Also, a black lawyer attempts to explain to Bosch the reasons for the rioting in LA: "It's about hope, detective...The minority communities of Los Angeles have no power, have no money, have no voice...When you take hope away, it leaves a void. Some people fill that up with anger and violence."
The Angels Flight case does not quite play out so that all the issues are resolved. Then again, we don't live in a perfect world. But Connelly comes pretty close to perfect in writing this book.
