Book Description

Betty Crocker's classic cookbook for children is back-in an authentic reproduction of the original 1957 edition

A whole generation of Baby Boomers grew up with Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls, and they have helped to make it the one of the most requested titles in the Betty Crocker archives. Now back by popular demand, this timeless favorite stands ready to capture the hearts of a new generation of budding cooks. Packed with recipes that are just as popular with kids today as they were 45 years ago, it shows how to make everything from Ice Cream Cone Cakes and Pigs in Blankets to Cheese Dreams and Sloppy Joes. The small format, easy recipes, charming color illustrations and photographs, and even the cover, are all the same as they were in the 1957 edition-and just as delightful as ever. The only innovation is the concealed wire binding that lies flat for easy cooking while being sturdy enough to withstand energetic handling by kids in the kitchen. It's the ideal book to give or to keep, for retro appeal, and for getting today's kids started in the kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars pleasant memories!.......2007-09-26

This is the same cookbook all of my sisters and I used when we were kids. Some of our favorite recipes came from this book. I am going to use it to teach my grandkids how to cook and hopefully they will treasure it as well.

3 out of 5 stars Too many prepared foods.......2007-05-16

I was a bit disappointed with this cookboook. Too many of the recipes called for box cake mixes or bisquick. I was hoping for more "from scratch" recipes.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Primer.......2007-01-15

I had the original Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls when I was a child in the 1950's. I so enjoyed following the recipes and creating tasty treats for my father, mother and brothers.
After all these years, I still have my original cookbook, and recall it with great affection. I've also come to appreciate the many cooking and baking tips that I learned from the book so many years ago. (How to accurately measure; handy tips on organizing ingredients; a simple glossary of cooking terms; even "Kitchen Manners", such as, "Is everything spic and span? Then, your mother will be glad to have you cook again!") So, I was delighted to see Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls available on the Amazon website.
I purchased three copies as Christmas gifts; One for my sister-in-law, to enjoy with her grandchildren, one for my daughter, to share with her daughter, who is three years old, and another, to save for a future grandchild.
The book might be spiffier if some of the sepia, pen-and-ink illustrations were replaced with colorful photography. But such a change might, also, damage the "kitchiness" of this time-honored favorite. And I suggest that a table of common substitutions would be helpful. But, all-in-all, I highly recommend Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls as a great introduction to the kitchen for our budding chefs.

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the past.......2006-12-23

I have had this book for.....wow, almost 50 years. My daughter was here yesterday and tried to steal it from me. I cannot give it up. It is in pretty good shape but there are many stains from use.
I ordered her one today, even though she is no longer a kid. I am intrested to see if all the recipes are in here. I understand the "Hobo Joe" thing and am not surprized, but how about the peanut butter creams, and the egg nog? These two recipes were made with raw eggs, a big no-no now. I do not care, I never got sick, and only use fresh eggs. The peanut butter creams were the thing my daughter wanted to make. They are her favorite and she remembers making them as a child. They taste like payday candy bars.
The cookie recipes are great! I also love the tuna burgers and eggs in a frame.
Yes, the book has a few items that are just put together, but this helps promote ideas, and are easy for kids to do.
This book is NOT just for children. I cannot bear to part with mine!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Sugar Cookies! .......2006-08-23

I have the original 1957 book which is falling apart because of use when I was a child. I recently purchased two Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls to give as gifts for two young women who were looking for a great sugar cookie recipe to make with their children. The one in this cookbook is the best!! In fact I used it so much growing up I gave the recipe to my grandmother who continued to bake these cookies and send them to me when I was in college. With so many complicated and fancy recipes out there today, it was great to see this book still in print. A must have for families with young children!

Book Description

The lonely old woman and the lonely old man decide to bake a girl this time, but when they open the oven, she runs off like her brother did. Never fear, this smart cookie has a plan to outfox the fox. Will it work? Let's just say that the ending is sweet for everyone.

“Ernst's familiar art, here placed against gingham-check backgrounds, utilizes the oversize format to best advantage, with large characters leaping out of their frames. On the cover, the candy-studded Gingerbread Girl with licorice-whip hair stares boldly out at readers. Kids won't be able to resist following her inside.”—Booklist

5 out of 5 stars Great new twist on an old story.......2007-07-19

The Gingerbread Girl is much smarter than her older brother. She's not about to end up as the fox's dessert. She fools everyone and comes out on top. A great twist to the old tale with a girl in charge!

5 out of 5 stars A hit with my three.......2007-06-24

I purchased this book to use with my kindergarten class, but I have shared it with the three cihldren I babysit for this summer (ages 4yrs.- boy, 6 and 8yrs.- girls). We have read this book A LOT. They have loved listening to it and have had a lot of discussion about comparisons to the Gingerread Boy. I llok forward to sharing it with my class. It is a great story that the children love.

5 out of 5 stars great twist on a classic.......2007-06-21

found this book by chance at our local library, and my daughters (2 & 4) wouldn't let me return it. so i had to buy it. the artwork is great in the story, and we loved the refrain, "i'll run and i'll run with a leap and twirl." only line i don't read is one where the wolf refers to her as an "airhead." other than, it's my favorite book, too.

4 out of 5 stars Cute story; some negative language.......2007-06-18

My five-year old daughter LOVES this book. They read it in her kindergarten class and she has read it over and over again. I just wish it didn't have the words "dumb" and "airhead" in it.

5 out of 5 stars Empowering tale for Smart cookies! (Especially little GIRLS!).......2007-06-02

This was such a fun follow up to the tale of the doomed Gingerbread boy. It's about time someone outsmarted that darn fox. My girls giggled and loved the illustrations but the felt SO proud when in the end the little girl triumphed. What a fun retelling!!!

Book Description

"Father Hunger" is the emptiness experienced by women whose fathers are/were emotionally absent, a void that leads to unrealistic body image, yo-yo dieting, food fears and disordered eating patterns. "Father Hunger" is a common phenomenon of Western culture, whose dictates and myths limit a father's role, creating a loss for all family members. Dr. Maine also discusses practical solutions to help readers understand and improve their father/daughter relationships and help families reconnect.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Maine!.......2002-06-24

This book makes sense to me. Focusing on a systems approach has brought the clairity and peace of mind I have needed. This book does not place blame on fathers but forces us to look at our parental figures as part of a bigger picture. I honestly feel this is one of the best books I have ever read. Relatives and friends of mine are eager to read read this book. Thank you Dr. Maine!

5 out of 5 stars Very Freeing.......2002-04-26

There are so many self help books about the father wound. Most of them leave me intellectually stimulated but emotionally empty.

This book is different.

Dr. Maine speaks plainly and emotionally in this book. I haven't read all of it yet, but the parts I have read captured my feelings about my father perfectly. It explains his role--or lack thereof in my life--and it fosters me in my quest to mourn the void that I have inside due to his neglect and emotional absence.

The best part of the book is the statement that we must accept and change the role that society has foistered onto men. Men have been required to distance themselves from their emotions and to not have deep and intimate attachments. As such, when they become fathers, the experience requires intimacy on a much deeper level than they are accustomed to and often, they fail. In healing the father wound, we come to realize that it's not just ourselves that must heal, but our fathers also.

Because it is by encouraging men to heal and reconnect with themselves that they will ultimately reconnect with us.

Buy this book. Share with your friends. Tell anyone who will listen. Get healed, be free and do what we should have been doing all along with our fathers: enjoy one another.

1 out of 5 stars Elementary.......2001-05-18

If you know nothing about eating disorders...If you're early in your teens or 20s and just waking up to the profound realization that the relationships you had with your parents might have influenced how you are in the world, you will probably get a lot out of this book as a starting place. If you're like me and you've read Geneen Roth, Susie Orbach, explored these issues in therapy, I doubt you'll be satisfied. I bought the book intrigued by the title expecting to get a deeper perspective about food and fathers. Nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1997-07-30

This book is different from most eating disorder books because of its focus on the father. It really gives you a new perspective on how fathers are actually involved in a daughter's life without actually doing anything. As a recovering anorexic and bulimic, I found this book helpful in opening my mind up about the complex interactions that helped form my problems. Understanding the root of the problem makes solving it easier (but still not that easy)

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids and parents!.......2007-08-31

I love this book! I bought it for my 3 kids, ages 3-7. My daughter immediatley picked out recipes to make for the weekend. The book itself is a spiral book, so it lies on the counter nicely to read from while cooking. Every single recipe has a photo, which is great!! We have such a blast making recipes together. Besides kids learning to cook and use utensils, it is a perfect way to bond with your children. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Practical cookbook.......2007-01-16

After looking at several cookbooks geared to children, I selected this one because it was in a format similar to an adult cookbook, had excellent photographs and recipes to make fun food. It was laid out in a orderly manner, whereas other cookbooks for children were not.

4 out of 5 stars Kids cookbook.......2007-01-15

This book is nice but however, I was hoping it would have more basic things to make. Has a good section for themed parties and holidays etc. Alot of the items are specialty items not everyday food to make.

5 out of 5 stars Mom & Kid Tested, Both Approved.......2007-01-06

I taught both my sons to cook before they left for college. My daughter-in-law is not a cook. I thought my seven year-old grandson needs to learn to cook if he is to eat much more than something from the drive thru. This was his Christmas present. Both mom and son looked thru the book and selected dishes they each wanted to prepare. They made their grocery list, went shopping for the ingredients, and prepared their dishes. So far, everyone involved is very pleased with the results and proud of their efforts. I'm told everyone in the family likes the cookbook because it can be used by cooks of different ages and different skills levels. Thank you, Pillsbury!!

Book Description

Insatiable is an astonishingly moving story of four teenage girls whose shame, fear and confusion compel them to binge, purge and refuse to eat in misguided attempts to feel safe and in control of their lives. This incredible, imaginative story, written in episodic format, is based on real case histories and tells a true-to-life story through character-driven vignettes. Insatiable will envelop readers in the personal and seemingly tangible worlds of each of the main characters. What makes this novel so forceful and vibrant is the way Eliot weaves her story through dynamics that inform these friendships and the therapy that helps them address their pain and fears. For every teen trapped in this seemingly endless cycle, and those who simply enjoy reading about real life issues (i.e. teen bestsellers Speak and Smack), Insatiable is a must-read.

3 out of 5 stars Tries, doesn't quite deliver........2006-09-21

Eve Eliot, Insatiable (HCI Teens, 2001)

Eve Eliot has done something that few, if any, other authors who write about eating disorders have done: she considered the fat kid.

I mean, think about it. We're constantly hearing that childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and the diet book industry has gone through the roof in the past couple of decades. (Would that I'd written The Eat Your Weight in Bushes and Slim Down! diet book five years ago. I'd be rich.) And yet every book I've picked up dealing with childhood eating disorders is preoccupied with anorexia and bulimia. One might call it an obsession, even. Books on eating disorders, as a rule, do not talk about childhood obesity.

Eliot feels the pull, though. Anorexia and bulimia is sexy, from the perspective of addressing eating disorders. And three-quarters of Eliot's main characters fall solidly into the anorexia/bulimia camp, and those three, as one would expect, get much of the screen time here (and more of the drama). But at least we have Phoebe, the smart, popular girl who cannot stop eating. And her presence in this book alone, let alone the fact that certain chapters of the book focus on her, raises the book a couple of notches by itself.

Eliot gives us the story (thinly-veiled nonfiction, I'd expect; Publisher's Weekly calls it "a work of fiction based on actual case histories," which I assume means it's got more truthiness than, say, a James Frey book) of four teenagers who all have eating problems. They also have a few side-effect-style problems (one character is a cutter, though the actual descriptions of cutting and its psychological effects sound more like they were absorbed from a psych journal instead of direct experience), but the eating disorders take center stage.

There's a lot of potential here, but much of the time, I wasn't sure under what it was hiding. The dialogue tends to flatness, the characters to steretypical actions (though they are well-drawn, especially for a book based on case histories), and the whole thing seems dated thanks to the details on which Eliot chose to focus in places, especially clothing and hairstyles. But Eliot does rise up from the mundane every once in a while, and when she does, this becomes a fascinating little work. Most of these times are when the girls are at their worst and give in to whatever desire each happens to be fighting. When Eliot's writing the bad stuff, she really takes off. It's the connective tissue in between that could have used some work.

But still, she considered the fat girl. And that's worth checking out, for its rarity if nothing else. ** ½

1 out of 5 stars annoying.......2006-03-27

Okay, I haven't finished reading this book. So far it's just getting on my nerves with all of the stupid dialogue, flat, boring characters, and horrible writing.

I also noticed that the author's favorite color seems to be green for most things she describes are green (i.e., green shirt, green couch, lime green hair thing, etc). And that's getting on my nerves.

Seriously, like some people have mentioned, the dialogue in this book is unrealistic. Someone else stated that the author is trying too hard and I agree.

Someone else stated that this book is triggering and I agree. It made me want to eat like the fat girl. And not eat like the anorexic smoker.

This book is weird and it sucks and I'm not even halfway done with it. The author gets repetitive with the bulimic's OCD about cleaning her room and looking at zebras and the fat one wanting to be skinny like the anorexic smoker.

Don't bother with this book. It's a waste.

3 out of 5 stars Insatiable.......2005-09-30

This book got off to a fairly good start; the situations are catching. However, I think that the author tried to include a little too much. Jessica-anorexic AND a smoker; Hannah-bulimic AND dealing with being an asexual lesbian; Samantha-anorexic AND a cutter, and so on, and also in making Phoebe, the friendly, intelligent binger, and Jessica, her polar opposite (a cold, rather empty-headed anorexic) her best friend. The ending was also very predictable in the way things worked out: one by one three of the four girls start therapy, then the fourth one dies. It's rather unrealistic. Too many eating-disorder books end in Therapy Happily Ever After.

The scenes in which each girl succumbed to her disorder were fairly thrilling and very well written. The thoughts were absorbing and you could really identify with them, even if you had never felt them before, as when I read about Hannah throwing up. Eliot captured in great detail the gist of each disorder and the forced lifestyle that follows, but I think she's too into happy endings.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes you want to starve yourself.......2005-04-15

I think that people should stop writing books on Anorexia, Bulimia and Cutting because it only drives you to do it.
While reading this book I myself suffer from being a Cutter and a Bulimic, every time Samantha cut herself it made me want to cut, every time Hannah made herself throw up I wanted to make myself throw up, every time Phoebe went into the kitchen to fill up on milk, cookies, ice cream and pie, it made me want to do the same thing, and every time Jessica starved her self for food it made me want to starve myself.
If your Anorexic, Bulimic or a Cutter you shouldn't read this book because it doesn't help you at all it only inspires you to harm yourself even more.
This was a good book but it has some bad effects.

Her father thinks that Phoebe should start to look more like the young ladies and teens he photographs. In the book Phoebe feels as though she cannot do any thing about it. What do Phoebe learn once Jessica dies? You'll have to read to find out!

It is a very hart thumping book that will have you go to the edge of your seat. With in every chapter there is a problem. This book was very interesting to read and I think that most teenage girls will really enjoy this book. All of them dealt the same subject but in different issues. It is worth reading and the cool thing about it is that most of the stuff are facts since the author is a therapist with eating disordered teens.

5 out of 5 stars The title maybe Ugly Vegetables, but it's beautiful story.......2007-05-13

I was drawn to this book for several reasons. First off, I have a child born in and adopted from China and am naturally drawn to books relating to Chinese people. As much as I want her to understand her birth culture I am also learning at the same time. We have several Grace Lin books in our library at home and have loved everyone of them. What I love about this book is that it illustrates how we all have something to teach one another and that through our sharing and teaching we actually become comfortable with ourselves. This isn't just a book about some unusual vegetables, it's a story about people and what we each have to offer the world.

5 out of 5 stars The Ugly Vegetables.......2006-03-15

One of my two year olds favorite books. Beautiful illustrations and a fun story, especially if coming from a gardening background. My daughter also loves trying to say the Chinese words for the vegetables at the end of the book.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2005-10-04

I bought this book for my 3 year old, but I think it's a bit too complicated for her. The story is lovely, and I bought this based on our enjoyment together of several other books illustrated and/or written by Ms. Lin. However, her attention span at 3 is too short to get through all of the narrative, so we just looked at the pictures while I summarized. The pictures, as usual, were colorful and intriguing, but we put this book aside for next Summer, when she'll be closer to 4, and we can read it together as we plan our own "ugly" vegetable garden.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome book and receipe included, how great is that!.......2004-08-22

Each Grace Lin book I get, I am just so impressed by her talent! Every child loves to get their hands into dirt and growing flowers or vegetables is always fun and gives the child great pride to show everyone their hard work and or beautiful flowers!

Every child wants to be just the same as their friends, especially those in the neighborhood. Mom and daughter start in the spring to plant their garden and while everyone else in the neighborhood each have their own way of tending their gardens totally different from how her and her mom garden. When their plants appear they look like grass, where other neighbors' appear they look like normal plants.

The little girl constantly asks questions as all children do, why mommy, why mommy and her mommy patiently answers each of her daughters questions. When others in the neighborhood have beautiful flowersthat smell so good, the little girls garden has what she sees as ugly plants with no beautiful scents. Once the vegetables are ready to be harvested the little girl and mother gather their wheelbarrow with their vegetables. Later that afternoon the daughter is out playing in the yard and smells a wonderful smell and it's coming from her house! Her mom has made soup using their harvest and her mom gives her a bowl..... it tastes so good! Then there comes knocking at their door and it's the little girls neighbors wanting to trade their beautiful flowers for a bowl of soup. The Mom tells the neighbors about each vegetables and the next spring the little girl notices her neighbors growing " Ugly Vegetables" too!

I love that Lin includes a receipe to make using these so called "ugly vegetables" and that she included their names and even sounded them out. Keep up the good work Mrs. Lin and I'll keep on buying your books and singing praises to anyone who'll read my reviews!

5 out of 5 stars Should Be in Every Library!.......2001-06-29

This was a wonderful story that my husband and children just loved. We learned about some new vegetables in the process. As a kid I wasn't fond of bitter melon, but I'm willing to give it a second try after reading the book! My 5 and 6 year old boys are clamoring for us to go out, buy some ugly vegetables, and make the soup! This book appeals to every member of the family and the illustrations are beautiful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So Cute!.......2007-09-02

I got this book for my daughter and absolutely love it. We are big Nancy Drew fans and thought we might like the book. Not only is it fun because it uses Nancy's cases and friends for inspiration for the recipes, the recipes are also really good. We've enjoyed this book a lot!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-08-06

I bought this thinking it would have Nancy Drew references on each page--Not So! This is just an average cookbook with recipes renamed to reflect some of the Nancy Drew titles. I ended up returning it to Amazon. My Nancy Drew fan would have been disappointed if she'd gotten this for her birthday. Look for "The Lost Files of Nancy Drew" instead.

4 out of 5 stars A Retro Classic, With Some Good Stuff.......2006-08-09

The authors of the Nancy Drew Cookbook have cleverly and completely captured the essence of the Nancy Drew novels, as they still existed in the early 1970s (I understand Miss Drew has been significantly updated in recent years).

Most of the recipes look as if they were designed by a dietitian for a school cafeteria, but there are a few bright spots here and there, as well as many actual good cooking and entertaining tips.

I once held an Elvis party and tried to recreate Elvis' favorite foods. This is the type of cookbook I used, one which offered essentially plain, homey food, not at all in accord with today's dietary fashions.

5 out of 5 stars Cookbook draws excitement.......2006-03-22

My daughter received this book as a birthday present, and was elated.

5 out of 5 stars Fab!.......2006-01-21

This book was so cool and i was so excited to get it. I love any Nacey Drew book and I love to cook so this works very well! lol!
