Book Description
A stunning, long-awaited book that looks at the (still) shocking truths of race, ethnicity, and class in America today.
William Julius Wilson, among our most admired sociologists and urban policy advisers, author of When Work Disappears (“Profound and disturbing”—Time; “His magnum opus”—David Remnick, The New Yorker), and Richard P. Taub, chairman of the Department on Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, spent three years with a group of researchers studying four working- and lower-middle-class Chicago neighborhoods: African American, white ethnic, Latino, and one in transition from white ethnic to Latino.
Their focus: to understand how and why certain urban residents react to looming racial, ethnic, or class changes, and what their reactions mean in terms of the stability of their neighborhood.
Using first-person narratives and interviews throughout, There Goes the Neighborhood gives voice to attitudes and realities few Americans are willing to look at. Their findings lay bare a disturbing and incontrovertible truth: that the American dream of racial integration, forty-two years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, still eludes us—and, in fact, may not happen in the foreseeable future.
The authors examine the ways in which forces that contribute to strong neighborhoods work against the idea of integration. They explain why residents of neighborhoods with weak social organizations often choose to move rather than confront unwanted ethnic or racial change. Finally, the authors make clear that the racial and ethnic tensions that have become all but inherent to urban neighborhoods have urgent implications for Americans at every level of society.
Groundbreaking, authoritative, eye-opening—and certain to rekindle, and permanently alter, the discussion of race relations in our time.

Neighborhood Rundowns.......2007-03-21
The authors gathered results of information collected by researchers in four Chicago area neighborhoods over the past many years. Unfortunately, the outcome is a rather surface descriptive of racial and ethnic and class interaction among Black, Hispanic and White populations. There are several simple PowerPoint-like graphs comparing sizes of ethnic populations; but, beyond that, important statistics are few, relevant quotes from residents and officials are wanting...and actual differences between the neighborhoods are sketchy at best. Although Wilson and Taub do describe relevant differences about four outlying sections of the city (which are miles apart), a dry "sameness" pervades each of the chapters on each of the neighborhoods.
Maybe it's that I'm Chicago-familiar, but I was invariably wondering why the real names of the neighborhoods had to be hidden for this book. As I read, I often tried to figure out exactly where each of the places were/are as there are no such neighborhoods as "Beltway," "Dover," "Archer Park," "Groveland." The authors alert readers to the name-changes; yet, they don't say why this might have been necessary in a serious book of this sort. "Racial, Ethnic and Class Tensions" explained? -More like "described." --Not a bad work. I learned a few things but expected much more detail in what was an overly compact, quick read.
dry, sciologicall analysis of 5 southwest chicago suburbs.......2007-03-18
dry, sociological analysis of 5 southwest chicago suburbs---reads a bit like an academic dissertation, but interesting in its conclusions.

Book Description
Twelve-year-old DJ Walters always knew there was something strange about the house across the street: toys mysteriously disappeared when they wound up on its lawn, and Mr. Nebbercracker himself acted like he had a secret to hide. But this Halloween the house has become a living, breathing monster, and people have started to disappear! The trouble is that no one believes DJ and his friends. So they vow to find out what's inside the house and how to defeat it. But can they do it before it destroys the entire neighborhood and gobbles up every trick-or-treater in sight?

A review on Monster House By Tom Hughes.......2007-05-23
DJ's and Chowder's life was simple. They woke up, had breakfast, went to school, came home, ate dinner and did homework. But DJ had better things to do than homework. Across the street from him was a shattered, non-painted old house. And in it was an old man know as Mr. Nebbercraker. One day DJ and Chowder where spying on Mr. Nebbercraker when a girl named Jenny came into the scene. She was about their age and was pulling a red wagon full of cookie boxes. She was probably selling them as a fundraiser for her school. She walked up to Mr. Nebbercraker's door and was about to ring the doorbell when DJ and Chowder came running down after her screaming not to. As she rang the doorbell a low echoing sound that seemed to go miles into the center of the earth boomed and the two large parallel windows above her turn bright red and turned into a pair of evil red glowing eyes. The door swung open and razor sharp shards of wood came out of the top and bottom of it, and then the rug leading to the back of the house turned into a tongue and soon it looked much like a face. All of the sudden the walkway to Mr.Nebbercraker's front door turned into an inclined plane and then Jenny started to almost roll down right to the razor sharp teeth. Just as she was about to be devoured by this "monster house" DJ and Chowder caught her and ran back across the street and back to their room. Of course Jenny was stunned and knew they had to stop this evil house. Ever since that day DJ watches Mr. Nebbercraker's house to get some proof that this house is... ALIVE! But Halloween was coming up and all of the people that trick-or-treated Mr.Nebbercraker's house will be eaten. So begins a battle of three kids and a living house nightmare!
Opinion
Monster House was a fun and entertaining book about three kids and a living nightmare. I recommend Monster House for people who like suspenseful, action scenes. It was a very good book, and every night I was tempted to read more and more of it. It was just like I was watching the movie right in my bed!

My "Monster House" review.......2007-02-22
I read the book "Monster House", adapted by Tom Hughes. This story takes place in a neighborhood in the town of Mayville. A kid named DJ knew something was wrong with the house across the street. The house was alive and would eat anything or anyone that stepped on its lawn. When the house came alive, the front door was its mouth, the porch was its teeth, the foyer rug was its tounge, the upstairs windows were its eyes, and the trees on the side of the house were its arms. The biggest problem was DJ and his friends were the only ones that could see the house alive. DJ and his friends, Chowder and Jenny, were going to spy on the house and find out what was going on with it. They also wanted to find out why the house became alive after its owner, Mr. Nebbercracker disappeared. After spying on the house with their telescope, the 3 friends realized that the house was really alive and the furnace was the heart and soul of the house that kept it alive. The friends made a plan to get inside the house and put out the fire in its furnace.
The three friends went onto the lawn and up to the house. When the house "woke up" it stared to chase them. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny ran down the street and the house chased after them. They led the house to the back of the neighborhood to a construction sight they called "The Danger Zone". While the house chased the kids, Mr. Nebbercracker showed up. He had been sick and was at the hospital. Mr. Nebbercracker was trying to calm the house down. DJ finally climbed to the top of a crane and dropped dynamite into the house's chimney. The house exploded and destroyed the furnace. While the house was burning, the kids and Mr. Nebbercracker saw a spirit floating up from the ashes. It was Mr. Nebbercracker's wife, Constance, who had died years before. Her spirit was trapped in the house and when Mr. Nebbercracker went to the hospital, she thought that he had died and left her alone. She was released when the kids destroyed the house. Mr. and Mrs. Nebbercracker were able to say good-bye and Mrs. Nebbercracker's spirit was finally free.
I loved this book because its details. The description of the house was great. I could actually envision the house in my mind. I also loved the suspense.

Monster House.......2007-02-19
The book Monster House is really cool, it's all about these three children spy on the house next door. The house is alive and lots of things happen to the kids, if you want to know you could read the book. There are three main characters, they are DJ, Chawder, and Jenny. If you like action books you will like this. The book is not really scary. The auther is Simon Spotlight. Good work Simon! I hope you like it.

Jerry's Fabulous Farewell to "The Neighborhood".......2006-04-28
This is Jerry van Amerongen's final collection of "The Neighborhood" cartoons (don't worry, he continued with his
"Ballard Street" but it is not quite the same). Jerry is absolutely unique. He uses everyday expressions combined with bizarre drawings to show the absurdities of both our language and our lives. I am constantly reminded of his cartoons as I go about my daily routine, so you keep laughing even after you put the book down.
Here is a few samples from this collection:
(1) We see a drawing of those noisy power blowers
gardners use to clear the sidewalk and driveway.
It has a little notice stuck to its side that says
"Warning-This equipment has no noise restraint and may
only be used during the tranquil, early-morning hour, or
during the reverie of twilight"
(2) We see a patient on a couch on a psychiatrist's
couch, and we are are looking over the shrink's shoulder
and looking at his notepad on which he is writing .
All we see on the notepad is "sick, sick, sick, sick, sick!"
(3) We see a man with his arm outstretched with a baseball
catcher's glove on his hand, and an arrow piercing the glove
in the middle. The caption reads "Another failure to thoroughly synchronize athletic activities.
(4) We see a gigantic chicken with a man standing in front of it holding an egg in his outstreched arm. The man says
"one more step and I drop it!". The caption reads:
"Is there anything Mr Alexander isn't prepared for?"
(5) I am not sure this one is in this collection or another, but I have to relate it---we see a man sitting in diner with a dumpy waitress dropping soup in his lap. The caption reads :
"The aliens are beginning their invasion by disguising themselves as service personnel"
This last one in particular is so funny I can't stop laughing.
Get his books and be prepared for the biggest laughs of your life!
A Reliable Antidote to Ill Humor.......2001-03-07
Van Amerongen's zany cast of characters may at first strike the reader as so far out there as to be slightly beyond the horizon, but I defy you to read through the entire book without laughing out loud. This collection of single panel comics features the bored, "Glenn is pulled along in the slipstream of Beverly's life", and the overboard, "The encroachment of adhesives on the fabric of the family", as well as tanatalizing drawings that portend the intrusion of the latter into the lives of the former.

Great fun.......2004-05-19
Sidney Harris' cartoons are immediately recognizable, if only for their intelligent handling of real science. His topics are often serious. This whole book is about what we've done and continue to do to the world we live in. Harris knows that a serious topic doesn't always need a grim discussion, and his teasing makes his points better than any harangue ever could.
This book was published in 1996, and collects many cartoons that originated earlier. Most haven't aged, though. There's the gas station attendant sitting dejectedly, for example: "I just saw my first electric car." As of today, the issues have only become more sharply draw - electric (or hybrid) cars are on the roads now, and the fossil fuel companies really haven't changed.
Science is too important to be reserved for scientists. Harris' humor does a lot to deflate over-stuffed egos. Even better, his humor creates memorable images about important ideas.
Enjoy!

Book Description
There Goes The Neighborhood is written to help citizens, businesses, neighborhood associations, and community groups, develop strategic approaches for land use challenges. It shares many of the thoughts and motivations of proponents of development choices and provides practical insights into public decision making processes. It examines the art of public presentation and asks the reader to view public participation strategically. It helps the reader develop confidence to participate in processes for which citizens often have no formal guidance.
The book demonstrates to the reader that the choices faced by its community are similar to those confronted by citizens in communities throughout America by drawing upon examples of land use conflicts in all parts of the country. It posits that there is an inherent commonality in non-contextual land use proposals and the decision making processes which govern them.
There Goes the Neighborhood is a long overdue road map for the hundreds of thousands of average American citizens engaged in the explosive arena of land use challenge. The book enjoys a vast audience of community and citizen groups as well as individual Americans committed to opposition of poor development choices. It is highly recommended by municipal officials and planning professionals, and it will enjoy an expanded market as a supplemental text within college curriculums. Most importantly common citizens, business people, and the reading public who are confronted with land use proposals but who are not necessarily members of organized citizens groups will also seek this important reference resource. This market is currently without the most basic direction on how to exercise rights of opposition when poor land use proposals surface.
The timing is right for this book. Land use conflicts have become focal points within virtually all communities throughout the country. They involve the management of growth, the use of scarce public resources, or often, simple zoning issues. They may also involve the construction of public works projects that have significant land use impacts
Few citizens understand how to analyze land development proposals and to effectively organize opposition in a way which will maximize possible success. At the same time there is a rising public awareness that not all development is good development and that land use choices must be sensitive to the context of their surroundings. The subject is topical for any citizen or group confronted by a development proposal which threatens their quality of life or the fabric of their neighborhood or community.
Customer Reviews:
This book belongs in every community leader's tool box.......1999-03-08
Having been involved in a politically driven issue that threatened the serenity and security of my neighborhood and having to do battle with a variety of special interests, I can honestly say this book is a "how to" with substance.
