Great time reading and laughing.......2007-10-02
Lot of truths mentioned in the book... Wish there were more, especially when it comes to government entities... Just have to be diligent about "practicing" the tips and tricks provided.
Great book.......2007-09-28
This is a great book that has a good level of scholarly support but written in an easy-to-read style that should appeal to most audiences.
Stating The Unspoken.......2007-09-23
Everybody knows the abuse-of-power types that this book outlines. Too often companies/cultures put the onus on victims to adapt, and get-along. What that approach does is allow managers to NOT do their jobs - and that is to confront dysfunctional behaviors clearly and directly.
Dr. Sutton takes a no holds barred approach to defining culture up front. Letting the community know what is and is not acceptable behavior. I wish that he would create a study of companies that are this direct in dealing with behavioral problems, bring the concept along further with specifics of what works and what doesn't.
The "avoidance approach" clearly is not a true solution, but as he states in the book if management will not address the organization's asses, and you want to keep your job, it is the best option sometimes.
A few times in my life I've worked in environments where the assholes have kissed upward so much that they are well connected. And poorly skilled career bureaucrats looking to keep their position, single these emotionally inept people out as stars to be heralded - because heralding a well connected asshole makes you an ally. In each of those situations, I've watched the best people move on, managerial incompetence thrive, motivation deteriorate, and a fairyland scenario of pretending flourish. What a sad state of affairs that leads to.
Bringing the difficult concept of an actual asshole present in the mix, naming what is unspoken, is an essential element in this work. Further development of the idea, refinement of behavioral understanding could only continue to develop greater awareness of truly sly assholes that are skilled to be non-confrontational to those above them and non-approachable to those below.
A meeting with such people present vs. absent is like day and night. Personally experiencing this, I saw groups transformed from demotivated-lackluster-lifeless chair slugs to excited-active-contributors. Such culturally (negatively) controlling individuals cost an organization far more than can ever be measured.
The book is worth the read if only for the stories. But, the principles, the validation, are the real meat and potatoes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and if you can't gift it directly, then throw a few copies into envelopes and drop them in your managements' mailboxes. It's about time the pretending to be nice facade gives way to true comprehension of what civility is, and the complete disregard for it will not be tolerated.
I love this book!.......2007-09-22
I urge everyone to read this book, whether they're in an office environment, or just dealing with day-to-day situations. I've bought three copies so far to give to co-workers and family, and I may need more!
The minute you open the book, you will SO recognize what is described!
Accurate Potrayal of Many Work Environments.......2007-07-22
I commend Bob Sutton for publishing this book. It is apparent many jobs expect you to tolerate a coworker or superior whose behavior is off the chart yet protected and sometimes endorsed by management. The cost to a business is high and Bob did a great job of quantifying it. I highly recommend this book if you work in a toxic environment. Bob outlines some great strategies for succeeding in such an environment and discusses how to create policies to prevent one person's inflated ego from sinking the ship.

Here's another management parable that draws its lesson from an unlikely source--this time it's the fun-loving fishmongers at Seattle's Pike Place Market. In Fish! the heroine, Mary Jane Ramirez, recently widowed and mother of two, is asked to engineer a turnaround of her company's troubled operations department, a group that authors Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen describe as a "toxic energy dump." Most reasonable heads would cut their losses and move on. Why bother with this bunch of losers? But the authors don't make it so easy for Mary Jane. Instead, she's left to sort out this mess with the help of head fishmonger Lonnie. Based on a bestselling corporate education video, Fish! aims to help employees find their way to a fun and happy workplace. While some may find the story line and prescriptions--such as "Choose Your Attitude," "Make Their Day," and "Be Present"--downright corny, others will find a good dose of worthwhile motivational management techniques. If you loved Who Moved My Cheese? then you'll find much to like here. And don't worry about Mary Jane and kids. Fish! has a happy ending for everyone. --Harry C. Edwards

Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park
1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!
2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.
3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.
4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.
5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan
There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.
From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.
Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.
Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.
Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend
In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:
• What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him
• Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship
• How to relate to your dog on a canine level
• There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners
• Why every dog needs a job
• How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family
• The difference between discipline and punishment
• And much more!
Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

I love Cesar!.......2007-10-04
This book is an easy read. It gives a fair amount of background as to how Cesar Millan got his start as well as the method behind his madness. Anecdotes and straight-forward advice give the reader some general ideas as to how they might curb certain pet behavior issues. You can agree or disagree with Cesar's training methods, but you have to admit the guy genuinely cares about AND has a way with both dogs and people.
vague.......2007-10-02
Though his basic ideas make sense, the book fails in that it never gets around to specifics. For example, Cesar tells you never to let your dog go in the door first. OK, fine...but how? Never let your dog walk ahead of you on the leash. OK, fine...but how? What can you actually do to stop the dog from going ahead of you? If you are like me, and are having problems with a dog that is physically stronger than you are, this book will not be very helpful. After reading this book I still have no idea how I'm supposed to hold back an exuberant and powerful animal so I can walk ahead of her.
Cesar Milan- the dog Magician.......2007-09-26
Cesar Millan, is THE DOG MAGICIAN!! He has a rare, very gifted way of just knowing what is 'inside a dogs head'! Most of us humans do not have this. The book is excellent and will help many of us dog lovers to understand our wee dog friends better and give them a better life!! By Sheena from Scotland.
Cesar's OK.......2007-09-23
I enjoyed Cesar's Way. I have watched all of his TV appearances and have witnessed how dogs can be rehabilitated (as well as how the owners can be trained).
The book picks up where the shows leave off. The book goes into detail on most aspects of dog psychology. He points out the many ways humans differ from dogs. He describes our willingness to give our dogs human attributes. Cesar also shows how treating dogs like people creates emotional imbalance in the dogs that make the dogs less easier to handle. His calm-assertive model he describes is the ideal personality for the pack leader (the owner). This calm-assertive persona is something all dog owners should strive to become in order to control their dogs.
At the beginning of the book Cesar gives the reader insight into his childhood in Mexico. He briefly goes over how and why he entered the United States illegally and how he is on the pathway to citizenship. After watching his series on TV and observing the radical changes he is making with our pets, all of a sudden, his illegal entry into the country is less of an issue.
He makes a cheap shot about Bill O'Reilly describing him as "angry-aggressive" (page 69) when trying to describe the angry-aggressive dog personality. This analogy of Bill O'Reilly detracts from the book. This book should be about dog rehabilitation and not politics.
Ground Breaking!.......2007-09-23
I have watched The Dog Whisperer and became so mesmerized that I decided to read the book. Despite some of the complaints here (quite trite) I found the book absorbing and honest. Knowing more about Cesar himself was really very empowering. Look at what he has done. That should be inspiration in and of itself!
I feel his ground breaking work can be applied to humans as well as animals. Right now I'm applying it to my family of cockatiels who need a stronger pack leader. Though birds are different than dogs they still need boundaries, schedules and a bona fide pack leader. It's working. To bad I can't assign them jobs!
Cesar's Way is a wonderful read that helps one to really get inside a canine's head and understand what makes them tick. Cesar is knowledgeable and has many years of experience under his belt. He knows what he is talking about, and we can see it illustrated on his show.
I am deeply troubled by the behavioral problems that so many domestic dogs have in our country. Applying Cesar's work to these problems will help save and make happy one animal at a time.
Even if you are not in companionship with any animal I think you would find this a very fascinating read. I would love to see a book that married Cesar's concepts with those of the animal communicator's.

If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.
With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.
The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.
You: The Owner's Manual challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. After taking a quiz that tests your body of knowledge, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs.
Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body -- as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, You: The Owner's Manual gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, you'll also get the great-tasting and calorie-saving Owner's Manual Diet -- a thirty-recipe eating plan that's designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.
Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?

Tried to be a little too funny.......2007-10-01
I liked this book, but ended up skipping over a lot of the parts that were supposed to be funny. I would have liked the pictures to be labeled correctly, not with funny made up names for body parts.
You: The Owner's Manual.......2007-09-29
Great stuff, easy read. Very informative. I read it and then my Mom read it.
Very "YOUseful".......2007-09-28
In short, just a very informative book that is successful in achieving several goals. For one, it educates the reader in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through trivia, facts, and interesting pictures (for instance the authors use a lot of elves). Additionally, the book also gives you many helpful tips on self-care and how to keep your body running smoother. While there is a lot information, I really would like to have seen a reference section at the end of the book. All in all though, it's a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who might need more specific info on shoulder pain and rotator cuff self-care.
DR. OZ'S OWNERS MANUAL TOPNOTCH.......2007-09-27
I am almost finised with one of the finest medical information books I have read and this book is presented just as the author presents himself on the Oprah Show. A very informative presentation of just how our body works, filled with humorous narrative and drawings and tells it like it is. I highly recommend this hardback book to everyone who is interested in the workings of their anatomy and much can be learned from this reading. The great point in the presentation is the book is written in laymans terms and you would not have to be a graduate of Harvard to understand its contents.

Funny Funny Funny.......2007-09-25
Oh my gosh, I couldn't put this book down. It was so informative yet funny too. There were a few subject areas that I thought would have been expanded on and others that I was suprised weren't addressed at all, but those that were addressed were done well. Very entertaining.

Life-Span Human Development.......2004-07-17
I found the layout of this book very interesting in that it took a portion of the life-span and brought you from infancy to old age. In this way, the natural progression of life could be viewed for each topic. The alternative would be to start with infancy, then go to childhood, adolescence, etc. With the approach of this book, I found tracking each topie, e.g., "Perception," more interesting.
Tired Read.......2003-09-28
Very dry read. Complicated and confusing order of addressing topics. Reading for my developmental psych class felt like a chore with this book.
Choppy, and incredibly dry.......2001-05-01
I used this book with a human development course at my university, and it was less than adequate for the job. The book is incredibly bland, and while it goes through the life span in order, it seems to jump around from different people's theories too much. Better if all of Piaget's ideas were presented together for a certain topic, etc.. On top of that, I believe that the method of citing the sources, while it works for research papers, seemed out of place in this setting. Numbered footnotes would have worked better. The method of citation used made it seem choppy, as all of a sudden you'd see a last name and a year in the middle of the text. This could be done more effectively, because the current method definitely broke up the text significantly. Hopefully, some of these changes will be implemented in a future edition.

Good Resource.......2007-07-03
I brought this book to study for the PHR exam and to have as a resource. I self-studied for the exam with this book and the PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification. I recommend them both. It is laid out really well - with good charts, examples, and listing many websites to use for resources. I also like that the terms and definitions were listed in bold on this side of the pages. It is a good resource to have at the office.
Excellent one-stop resource.......2006-07-11
There's a reason this book is a standard in the field. It explains both fact and theory, in just enough depth, to support HR generalist efforts. The current edition -- for those of us who haven't seen the inside of a school for quite a few years -- features on-line resources that are particularly useful in work situations. Call it a textbook for OJT.
College Book.......2006-07-05
This book was delivered before the expected due date and was in great condition and a lot cheaper than the college book stores.
Read it for school.......2006-05-05
I (had to) read this book for school and it was definately worth my time. Working in a small (7 person) office, we had been lagging behind on HR knowledge. Having the resources this book provides within reach has helped us immensely. Highly recommended!
Worth the read.......2006-04-06
This book is worth the read. I use it as a desk reference for personnel issues.

Poor Organization and Boring .......2007-09-25
My biggest problem with this book lies directly with the fact that teachers use it when you BEGIN learning the basics of anatomy and physiology. Instead of focusing on the basics, this book has a lot of unnecessary "window-dressing". Not only that, but the author could have shortened the explanations; why talk about a topic in 10 pages when it could easily be said in 3?
By going on and on, this book only makes remembering the information more difficult. The book says "Fundamentals", but really it should be saying "Everything-in-Between"! Not to mention the price is horrendous (though it has gotten much better). PLEASE college teachers, if you wish to help your students learn efficiently, use a book that doesn't turn the subject of anatomy and physiology into a bore-and-tedium fest.
Want to save money?.......2007-09-09
This book is incredibly expensive. I've seen it listed for $200+ at some stores. I bought a brand new, shrink-wrapped "international version" for $37 plus $30 shipping (TOTAL $67). I know you're thinking that the shipping was high, but I received the book 36 hours after I ordered it and was thankful! It came with 3 sealed CD's and the online access code. The international version appears to be exactly the same except it is a soft cover and has a orange colored border surrounding that same picture on the cover. Good luck.
WOW.......2007-06-13
I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH INFORMATION CRAMMED INTO ONE BOOK!
DO NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE WHAT YOUR ARE PROMISED FOR YOUR PURCHASE.......2007-01-19
I purchased this book NEW and in good faith & because it was the title required for my anatomy class. (from the college bookstore)
The company NEVER made good on their promise to allow me access to use their website. They provided the professor an invalid access code.
I can only have access if I send them MORE money to purchase access.
I ALREADY GAVE THEM 150+ for the NEW text, lab manual, cd's & entry into their website. It feels like I am being SCAMMED although I am pretty sure this is not their intention.
I am 1/3 of the way done w/the book & class & DISSAPPOINTED W/MY PURCHASE.
I HOPE TEACHERS FIND AN ALTERNATIVE BOOK TO REQUIRE FOR A&P CLASS.
if you have to throw away $150..........2006-07-25
If you actually buy this book you're paying for the illustrations. Don't waste your time actually reading it, the presentation of the material is ponderous and completely unimaginative. The chapter on immunology is one of the worst I've seen anywhere.
The COVER of the book speaks volumes for its content. I'd be afraid to be seen in public with it.

This was my first experience ordering a College Textbook on Amazon. I ordered a brand new book and CD and was very pleased to receive my order in time for my class. Most important I was able buy a brand new textbook at a used textbook price. I liked being able to provide my credit card information to an Amazon rep by phone rather than send it over the Internet. I plan to use Amazon again for my future requirements.

Recently I took a course about Organizational Behavior & this was the course textbook. It's a reasonable choice for an introductory course. I found it easy to read & informative. However, the accompanying SAL CD-ROM was disappointing - I didn't think it was worth the effort.
Bottom line - I would recommend it.

Book Description
From the most trusted voice on transition, a revised edition of the classic practical guide to dealing with the human side of organizational change.
The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of corporate mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring hitting the news every day. Yet as veteran consultant William Bridges maintains, the situational changes are not as difficult for companies to make as the psychological transitions. In the best-selling Managing Transitions, Bridges provides a clear understanding of what change does to employees and what employees in transition can do to an organization.
Directed at managers and employees in today's corporations, Bridges shows how to minimize the distress and disruptions caused by change. Managing Transitions addresses the fact that it is people who have to carry out the change. When the book was originally published a decade ago, Bridges was the first to provide any real sense of the emotional impact of change and what can be done to keep it from disrupting the entire organization. With new information and commentary on layoffs, corporate suspicion, and the increasing tumult in the business world, Managing Transitions remains the definitive guide to dealing with change.
Customer Reviews:
High rating for a textbook, but it deserves it........2007-08-11
I have had several textbooks in Management between an Undergraduate, Graduate and Business itself. This was no different in that I expected the same old stuff, but was very pleasantly surprised at the authors candor about our perceptions of business practices. It didn't mince words on several tactics used by management and explained why so much doesn't work. It got my attention and I continued my reading with far more interest. There really isn't anything more complimentary I can say than I intend to sell all other books to new students, excect this one which I will hang on to and reference.
great results from this book.......2007-07-06
This is a wonderful book. If you deal with people who need to change how they do their work you must read this book.
great, short, valuable.......2007-07-04
This is a great book for all people who deal with people that are dealing with change. I have found this book useful when being a change agent for a company, or just for management in my own company. Part of the value of this book is it describes the emotional aspect of change. People are not always (usually) logical. Emotions play a large part. Knowing how to deal with the emotional aspect of change is essential. This book gives you great insights in this area.
Managing Transitions by William Bridges.......2007-05-13
This book is great! I was/am dealing with some pretty significant transitions -- the sudden death of my 21 year-old daughter, and a major division re-org at an S&P 500 company. Several months earlier, my VP had mentioned the book and suggested that all of his direct reports to read it. I did and it really hit home.
The author does an excellent job of describing the emotional and organizational impact of change and the mechanics of the process we use to get through it. We use the same basic process to deal with all change -- personal and professional -- and it has been very helpful to understand how it works. There is also a section in the book about the life cycle of an organization and that was illuminating. The book provided some tools to help me make critical decisions.
I bought six copies of the book and have given them out to friends and co-workers.
Great ~.......2007-05-07
This was a great book and well needed. If your your in or responsible for transitions. This is for you - an eye opener to some great ideas and the author takes the reader to both sides of the good and bad involving the transitional process and how it should be done. Great insight!
