Great to learn patterns for ears and hands.......2006-03-13
I am very pleased to use this book along with a previous purcahsed VHS from the author. It is clear, definitive and well written. It will help me as I teach reflexology to my students. Charts are very good.
Surprising technique.......2001-05-03
Okay, so I'm a nurse and dedicated to the medical establishment from which I draw my livelihood! I also have great respect for scientific methodology. That said, I also have to admit to an innate curiosity about alternative approaches to health care, and so when my license needed 30 CEUs for renewal, one of the courses I decided to take was one on reflexology. I purchased The Joy of Reflexology for that course and began reading it with more than a little skepticism. Although it suggested that practicing the art on oneself was less effective than doing so on another subject, I happened to have no one else at hand on whom to practice the techniques, so it was me or nobody. I was totally prepared to pooh-pooh the entire thing as so much bumpkin, when I discovered that the very unpleasant hip pain from which I was suffering at the time resolved and didn't return when certain pressure points on my feet were massaged as indicated in the text. Since I had been kept awake nights over the preceding several months, turning over and repositioning myself about every half hour trying find a more comfortable way to rest, I can tell you I was fully prepared to eat crow when the massage technique worked! True, a population of 1 isn't the best statistics, and a test on oneself is hardly the makings of a double blind study. So, coincidence? Maybe. But I got the first uninterrupted eight hours of sleep I'd gotten in months! I'll take it. Thank you Miss Gillanders.
not bad, but can be a lot better.......2001-01-16
The book is not bad, really, and it does contain useful information about reflexology, however I would describe its layout as nothing but sloppy. Many repeated pictures and explanations lead me to think the authors tried to make the book longer (thinker...) than it has to be. Realistically, you would be more likely to buy this book if it is 120 pages, than if it is only 60 pages :-).
There are many mistakes (one picture shows one thing, the next one conflicts and so on...). However, the book is still useful, and I would believe what the other reviewers said.
My 2c.
This book has been extremely helpful.......2000-10-05
I bought this book in 1996 and have since then used the techniques to help my wife deal with her Crohn's disease. I am writing this to let people out there know that reflexology works. If at the very least considered a relaxation method, we have experienced noticeable improvements in her condition after a few sessions. Four years later, we still use it whenever the need arises. For those of you debating whether to attempt this method, I would say you owe it to yourself to try it out. I hope you have as much if not better success than we have had.
good with detail.......2000-03-29
This book explores the theory of reflexology which says that by massaging our feet and hands (the outermost extensions of the body) we can stimulate certain body parts. This book includes sections on stimulating every major system of the human body along with tips on relieving certain common health problems. Each movement has an illustration complete with directional arrows so you cant go wrong. This is a great book to read if you want to help your loved one relax after a hard days work. Even if you dont believe in the theory of reflexology the massage movements still make the book worthwhile.

Book Description
Is burnout really as bad as its reputation suggests? Dr. Dina Glouberman says no. While other books tend to focus on managing burnout and restoring pre-burnout status, this lively, personal guide radically redefines the condition: Burnout is not the end-of-tether phase this side of breakdown, but a trigger for profound change and self-renewal. Glouberman explains, "Burnout is, or can be, a door to walk through into a life with space, love, and joy indeed a sense of being able to be one's true self." For those who are at burnout, or in danger of becoming so, this practical guide provides a companion to help readers rise from the ashes of their former selves.

Working With, Rather Than Just Trying to Conquer Burnout.......2006-02-16
The question: "What is burnout?" may seem obvious, since the term "burnout" has become part of everyday language, but it is still the topic of a great deal of empirical research.
Perhaps the best definition is that burnout is a prolonged response to chronic physical, emotional and interpersonal stressors at work. It is defined by three primary dimensions:
Exhaustion
Cynicism
Inefficacy
Burnout is more than just an individual experience of stress: it has to be seen in the larger organizational context of people's relationship with their work, and it has to be seen as a meaningful process that is trying to tell us something.
It is often the case that individuals miss all the signs in themselves. Some of the main symptoms are: Trouble sleeping; Worrying, particularly at night; Feeling unappreciated or "used" at work; Feeling less effective or competent than you used to; Easily becoming angry or irritated; A dread of going to work; A feeling of being overwhelmed; Recurrent stress-related physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue or back pain; Watching the clock and counting down toward the end of the work day; Rigidly applying rules without considering more creative solutions; Automatically expressing negative attitudes; Finding excuses to be absent from work. This is not the whole list, but just some of the most important symptoms. It is distressing that some people with burnout begin to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, as can happen with many life changing events, if people are not shown a way out of the maze.
There has been a lot of work on strategies to help individuals and organizations deal with this problem. Most have focused on ways to abolish the problem: to make it go away. Though that is a worthy objective, it is also important to understand the context, meaning and purpose of events in our lives, or otherwise we simply keep putting psychological bandaids on ever larger problems. So the best approach is to use work with physical, psychological and social difficulties to come up with solutions, but not to neglect the broader context of burnout: what does it mean for us personally and spiritualy?
This book is a superb example of how to approach that final piece. Pain, suffering and struggle are so often life's way of helping us to advance, to break out of the cocoons that restrain us. The trick is to know how to use these "negative" events to our advantage. Dina Glouberman's book is well written and full of wise and practical advice.
If you have any of the symptoms that I mentioned, then I would heartily recommend that you investigate what Dina has to say.
Heartening and helpful.......2003-11-11
This book caught my eye in a bookstore in London last fall, and I found it very timely and helpful, so I'm delighted that it's now available in the U.S.
Most books on burnout are written from the perspective that burnout is a negative condition that results from our failure to handle life's demands effectively, so it's up to us to cure the personal problems that caused the burnout and restore our pre-burnout frame of mind. By contrast, Dr. Glouberman sees burnout as a wake-up call, an invitation to stop and re-evaluate what led to our burnout, and an opportunity to reinvent our lives.
In my experience, burnout often occurs because (as happened to the author herself) we're putting too much of our energy into activities that are peripheral or antithetical to what we do best -- e.g., the technical expert who's thrust into a management job, or the teacher who becomes an administrator. Rather than struggling frantically to recapture the enthusiasm that may not have been there in the first place, it's better to step back, evaluate what's right and wrong for us in the present situation, and consciously choose which path forward is best for us.
The author's exercises are helpful, but what I found most encouraging was her attitude. Most people with a strong work ethic find burnout shameful -- an admission that they "failed" to meet the demands of a presumably desirable situation. Dr. Glouberman's positive, optimistic approach to burnout is heartening: once you're able to get past the negative emotions associated with burnout, you're free to look at the situation with detachment, and to learn from it.
Don't Settle for Burnout! There's more to life..........2003-10-02
I attended one of Dr. Glouberman's seminars, and I found her book even more helpful--because I can practice the exercises and read the book for advice and inspiration as I need it. She has an insightful, poignant writing style with the wisdom of an expert who knows her audience and how to help them. Burnout is so commonplace that we accept it as normal, and Glouberman reminds us that life is about living with our whole hearts and finding our true selves.
Helpful & thought-provoking.......2003-09-18
This is an important book for anyone contemplating a change in a job or a relationship; listen to the inner voice, pay attention to what your body tells you, and much, much more. It's obvious that the author knows her stuff--she includes a lot of practical advice and many stories of people who have managed to reclaim their energy and delight in life.

I am a Stay at Home Mom and found many of the tips helpful. It is a little slow and boring at times to just sit and read but it does have many helpful tips and I would still recommend it.
The Personal Search for Contentment in a Materialistic Society.......2005-07-18
Do you sense that life is going by and you're not really living it true to yourself or your personal convictions? If so, you may be suffering from spiritual bankruptcy...While we can't ever free ourselves fully from all of life's demands, we can discover a sense of balance in our lives. Or we can identify ways to shift between the two extremes - finding a time and a place in our lives for contemplation, and then alternating that with other times of busyness and distraction." ~Deborah Taylor-Hough
In order to simplify her life, Deborah Taylor-Hough had to rethink her entire lifestyle. With five children and medical bills that loomed over her, she made some tough decisions that required her to put away her pride and look more realistically at how she intended to survive. Her courage is inspirational and the decisions she made showed that her priorities were her family and her commitment to her belief system.
If you are dealing with a lack of meaning even with great wealth or societal emptiness despite an elegant lifestyle, this book takes a look at survival on the edge of bankruptcy and a search for contentment in a less than materialistic lifestyle.
If you long for a life of contentment, it may be a life of simplified choices and a life where family becomes more important than keeping up with every other family on the block.
While this isn't as far as building your own house or "Walden Pond," it is a realistic view of life and how to avoid falling into debt by taking practical and necessary actions like avoiding the temptations at malls or not watching certain channels on TV.
Deborah Taylor-Hough is a beautiful soul who has written a very practical guide for women who want to find a new balance in their lives. She also gives advice about tripling many recipes and freezing meals for the future (see her cookbooks), like before you give birth to a baby or know you are going to go through a time of stress. There are also recipes for making your own instant coffee mixes and homemade dry onion soup mix. Now I know why one house had closets that were scented with cloves - it keeps away moths.
If you have children you may enjoy the recipes for craft dough, soap crayons and homemade paper crafts. If you want to refresh your laundry or even make your own laundry soap, this author has the recipes. I have used her recipe for Spa Milk Bath, but I also use essential oils. I found that sea salt is relatively inexpensive at a health food store and even the addition of oatmeal in a cheesecloth bag and buttermilk can make a completely wonderful spa experience.
This book encourages you to be happier with less possessions and more quality family time. When you remember your childhood, what are the happy things you remember? I remember running around barefoot, swimming in African rivers and eating lemon meringue pie. I didn't care about the size of our house or the clothes I wore. I remembered the freedom to enjoy life and how my mother taught me to make strawberry jam.
Other great ideas:
Family cookbooks
Debt proofing your holidays
Winter picnics
I loved this idea because it reinforces the ideas that happiness has nothing to do with how much money you earn and it has everything to do with being creative and maximizing the talents you have and rearranging your priorities.

An excellent money-saving tool.......2005-06-03
Readers gain various tips and insights into saving time and money with this book. Various tasks become more simple and less expensive. This book speaks more on how to save money than on how to free yourself from the greed and dependency that it provokes.
What A Helpful book!.......2003-10-29
This a a great book with ideas and time savings for me. The title so describes the book, good choice! I love it!
Simply from the heart.......2003-05-23
I really liked the book, written straight fromn the heart. Though it's relatively not so thick but 'it got a little bit of everything'. The appendix cited a number of recommended resources that are also valuable to know. It made me wish I could be like those people who have attained such comfort through 'simple living'.

My Opinion Of Loretta's NEWEST BOOK.......2007-03-09
When I need a quick picker-upper, this is an EXCELLENT choice that I recommend for anyone.
I usually don't like these kinds of books..........2006-10-28
because most of them are just laundry lists of mediocrity...
but, this one rocked. it was both HILARIOUS [poking fun at life's absurdities] and often times quite poignant.
Daily Sunshine.......2006-07-22
My wife saw this book and wanted it. The set up is nice. A cute thought for each day to make you appreciate who you are and how to enjoy life. Well worth getting a copy.
Adds to the Good in Life with Sincerity and Humor!.......2006-05-12
Squeeze the Day brings Loretta LaRoche's from-the-heart, wise humor in this great gem of a pocket size book with her own quotes and analogies for living a better life on all levels.
You can feel her sincerity and care as you read the pages, and her wisdom is always helpful to get a grip or perspective, especially if you feel like you've lost it.
One of my favorite quotes is,
"Every day, try to have as much fun as possible. That will enable you to better deal with any crisis that you come up against. The more you give yourself the experience of happiness, the more it truly fortifies you to deal with unhappiness."
This is a great little book with genuine, authentic guidance that would make a great gift for anyone you're looking to cheer up - including you!
Snarky Humor and Witty Observations.......2006-05-11
"Who among us has not heard the phrase `Seize the day!'? Well, personally, I don't want to *seize* anything, but I *do* want to squeeze the juice out of every moment of every day. I would love my days and yours to be filled to the brim with delight, joy, love and good humor." - From the book
International lecturer and author Loretta LaRoche uses wit, humor, and insight in her work as a stress management consultant. In Squeeze the Day: 365 Ways to Bring Joy and Juice into Your Life, LaRoche shares bite-sized wisdom that's filled with optimism and humor-one for every day of the year. By advocating donning a clown nose, shouting "whee!" while driving down the highway, or saying "no" to affairs with robots (BlackBerrys, iPods, computers, etc.), the author shows us how to simplify, enjoy, and relax in these hectic times.
Some of the amusing and sage quotes in this book include:
"Don't become obsessive about anything! It will only make you feel like a dart that's always trying to hit the bull's-eye."
"Get plenty of sleep. Our bodies need rest, and our brains need the escape of dreams. Those of us who would never think of abusing our bodies with drugs, think nothing of abusing our bodies' need for rejuvenation and rest. For God's sake, take a nap!"
"If tomorrow were your last day, what would you like people to remember about you?"
"Being afraid of everything is incredibly debilitating. Anything can happen at any time, whether you fear it or not. So why bother?"
"If anyone ever says to you, `Oh, you're just too much.' thank them and say `There's a whole lot more where that came from...'"
"When you're driving your car, instead of getting upset about traffic, play a language tape or an audio book and spend time learning. Your car can be a university on wheels instead of a hell on wheels."
"Avoid euphemisms, such as `downsizing', `weight challenged', and `intellectually impaired'. These phrases don't kid anybody. You got fired, you gained weight, and maybe you just don't get it."
"Do you spend way too much time thinking about what you `should' have done? If so, stop `shoulding' on yourself!"
Encouraging readers to lighten up, appreciate loved ones, relish in nature's resplendence, and focus on what's right with the world, Squeeze the Day is a fun book for daily pick-me-ups and minute meditations.

It's not surprising that yoga has become a highly popular pastime in 21st-century America. "Recent medical research by well-known clinicians shows that stress is a major factor in causing heart disease, cancer, and a myriad of chronic and acute diseases of today's world," according to author and revered instructor Nischala Joy Devi, who has pioneered yoga programs for heart specialist Dean Ornish and cancer specialist Michael Lerner. "While the stressful events around us may not change, we can learn how to respond quickly to life's difficulties, maintaining our equilibrium and a sense of well-being."
Although the practice of yoga can create this well-being and has even been associated with reversing serious medical conditions such as hypertension and heart disease, Devi never makes grandiose promises. Instead, she shows readers how yoga can be realistically integrated into a contemporary lifestyle. Forget the contorted poses and mysterious religious overtones associated with yoga. Think "attitude adjustments" as Devi offers suggestions for opening the heart, achieving deeper rest and relaxation, breathing more effectively, and learning to meditate. Toward the end she addresses the physical plane with a well-illustrated routine of easy physical poses (asanas) as well as chapters on "Eating for Wholeness" and "Prelude to Sleep." Devi is indeed a masterful yoga teacher. Not only does she blend Eastern philosophy with Western living, she does it in a way that is grounded, approachable, and thoroughly welcoming for people from all walks of life. --Gail Hudson

Stress is now considered the foremost contributor to poor health and a major factor in causing heart disease, cancer, and a myriad of chronic and acute diseases. This book will make yoga a fundamental part of your quest for wellness and well-being, whether you are a novice or a current pactitioner.
Nischala Joy Devi, a pioneer in the field of alternative healing and a renowned yoga expert, has spent years helping people realize the healthful and stress-controlling benefits of yoga. In 1982 she developed yoga-based retreats for Dr. Michael Lerner's now famous Commonweal Cancer Help Program. That same year Dr. Dean Ornish asked her to create a program of yoga practices for patients suffering from heart disease. Yoga's contribution to the success of both programs has been astounding.
Devi shares her years of experience working with the healthful benefits of yoga, teaching visualizations, breathwork, and meditation, as well as providing the classic steps and illustrated instructions for yoga's physical poses.
The Healing Path of Yoga uses timeless Indian-based yoga techniques and philosophy, along with Devi's lifestyle-altering regimen, to create one extraordinary program with the power to rejuvenate and heal.
The Healing Path of Yoga presents the key to:preventing disease and stress in healthy people

Great for the Beginner or Seasoned Yogi.......2006-01-13
This book has a little bit of everything. It's a perfect book for a person new to yoga, who wants to learn the basics. It's also a great book for a Senior who wants a gentle approach to yoga. It discusses aspects of breath, meditation, and the physical practice of yoga. It also focuses on stress relief and heart health. I real gem.
I have bought several copies of this book to give to relatives.
Helpful in healthcare.......2004-03-13
I took her certification training and received the book at Ananda in California. I have shared the book with open minded pathophysiology instructors at The University of Utah College of Nursing. It is so helpful to have adapted poses to offer people of "less than perfect" bodies. Yoga has been so helpful to my patients on numerous levels. I also got to hear a testimony from one of the participants of the Dean Ornish Program on which she collaberated. He was inspiring by reaffirming the benefits of yoga came to him even without his appreciation for or acceptance of Eastern philosophies. But peace and healing came to him nonetheless. What an inspiration Nischala, her course and her book have been for me.
The Healing Path of Yoga.......2001-09-05
Finally, a book on Yoga that is based in the spirit. And for real people. It has amazed me to see that some very simple practices could actually do what modern medicine was not able to do. The stories are imspiring as is the antidotal information. As a person recovering from a life threatening illness it has become my bible. I taught me compassion for myself and for others. I am looking forward to Devi's next book.
Pathetic!.......2001-08-27
Had I read the reviews more critically, I would never have bought this book. From these reviews it is clear that Ms. Devi has popularized yoga, and in so doing, has trivialized yoga. Her earthy-crunchy, anecdotal babbling throughout the book makes this an excruciating read. I have never written a negative review of a book, but this book is an abomination.
There are angels everywhere and sometimes they write books!.......2001-03-05
Nischala Joy Devi's, "The Healing Path of Yoga" is truly an inspiring and practical book which should be included in the library of anyone interested in self-healing. Devi presents ancient tantric yoga practices which are accesable to the average reader without being threatening. The book introduces eastern teachings in a very user-friendly manner. If you are new to the healing arts or a serious student of yoga, there will be something in it for you.
I do not simply believe that these techniques work, I KNOW that they work. When I was born the doctors and experts told my parents that I was not expected to live due to heart disease. I had my first open-heart surgery at the age of twelve. In 1992 I was introduced to the Dean Ornish Program to Reverse Heart Disease. This program literally changed my life. I have had an opportunity to meet Nischala Devi and practice yoga with her. She is truly an angel to me and what I find so wonderful about her book is that her gentle spirit comes across. Even if you are not interested in yoga, Nischala's personal stories are well worth the purchase price. I have gifted family members with this book and everyone has told me how much they have enjoyed reading it. In fact, my mother who thought that yoga was a religious cult, signed up for yoga classes after reading this book. I can't give this book a higher rating than that!

So Helpful.......2006-07-22
This is the first book I've seen on the topic that takes a methodical look at how to simplify your life. Rather than offering aphorisms, one-a-day bits of philosophy and other airy-fairy stuff that in the end, add up to anything, this book offers concrete suggestion after concrete suggestion as to how to make things less complex. I got it as a gift, and it turned out to be a very good gift.
This book is wonderful!.......2006-07-10
I give this book the highest rating because it lays out on a room by room and activity by activity basis how to simplify your life. Like the author says, you can't follow everything in the book, just those things you can do most readily. There are so many suggestions, that anybody could find benefit with this book.
Good book.......2005-06-21
The Joy of Simple Living is easily worth the price in that you'll get tips on how to make your life simpler in almost any area of your life that you can put to work immediately. Rodale is known for doing a lot of these big books, and this one is a nice addition to the over-all line-up.
Immediate simplicity.......2005-04-07

Complicated.......2005-04-04
I've been reading a few books on how to scale back and simplify life and this was one book that was recommended to me. I was disappointed with a lot of his advice. He referred to a lot of other author's ideas as 'absurd advice'. He thought it was absurd for women to scale back their wardrobe to just a few items. For me, I think it makes perfect sense no matter what type of job you have. Have you seen a man's closet? They can get away with it... yet he thinks women can't.
Even something as simple as choosing to not make the bed he thinks is silly. If not making your bed will make things simpler for you, then don't. It's a personal choice and for some people it can be a stressful thing. Just think of it as airing out the sheets.
If you want to simplify your life, don't read his book. It will just add to the clutter.

Great book for Students, Employees, Bosses.......2004-03-07
I first came across this book more than 10 years ago, when as a doctor I was asked to give a lecture on stress management. It was life-changing for me, both at work and in my leisure time, as well--because it taught me how to play again, and to allow myself to enjoy sports at the same time I was driven to excell.
I recommend this book all the time to colleagues, patients and students. And I'm now buying a copy for my teenaged daughter, a competitive athlete who is combatting burnout. These skills should be graduation requirements for every high school student.
Life Changer!.......2003-05-06
This book changed my life when it first came out... I brought my toys to the office and started taking regular juggling breaks. Using some of the strategies in the book, I transformed myself and my team. Now, years later, I've found myself rediscovering the book, and sharing it with my new team -- although I'd incorporated many of the strategies into my work and home life, I'm re-applying some of the forgotten messages and strategies. This book is nothing short of life-changing. I also love the illustrations! The ONLY negative I have about the book is that I think the original larger format was a better package -- that edition had a very fun color road map / chapter listing on the inside covers that added a great deal to the look and feel of the book. (I was happy to find that the content had remained the same.) I recommend this book to team leaders as well as team members. DO THE EXERCISES!
Live by the words..........2002-08-23
This book made me realize that so many Americans take their work as the only thing they have in life to give of themselves. But they take for granted the most important aspect of life ... themselves and their loved ones. Read this book and you will realize that there is DEFINATELY a lot more to life than work. I enjoyed the book for that realization. I felt though that the suggestions were not as detailed as I would have liked and wished it had gone deeper into applying it to your everyday life. I guess the book is written to take you to the door, and you are the one that has to open it. I am recommending this book to friends. :)
End of burnout.......2000-07-09
I was very tired of work, when I found that book. The title made me curious. Actually I wanted to leave my job, but while reading I realised, that it was not only the job, it was me. I would have the same troubles everywhere. I now try to make some changes in my life and will see how it works.
You've heard the expression "Get a life!" - Here's how! !.......1998-07-25
If you find that you come home and collapse in front of your televison every night because you're "too tired" to do anything else, you should read this book.
This book should be required reading for every worker, manager and supervisor.
It was not too long ago that a 30 hour work week was predicted to become the norm for most US whitecollar workers. The average workweek today is almost 50 hours long. Layoffs, downsizing and the fears these management strategies instill have caused people to put in more and more time to survive, hoping to stay ahead of the next cutback.
This book explains why that reasoning is not only wrong, but achieves just the opposite result. This book suggests that a worker who goes home on time and has fun both on and off the job is more creative, more productive, and more successful.
A radical concept well worth exploring.
Book Description
Drawing on both scientific and anecdotal sources, the authors of The Joy of Laziness argue that the much-admired Type A lifestyle of intense exercise, frantic activity, and overwork is detrimental to health and long life. Every human being has a limited amount of life energy, they say, and the speed with which it is consumed determines the lifespan. Citing the scientifically recognized Metabolic Theory, the book explains how being “lazy” — being calm, eating temperately, reducing or avoiding sports, exercising moderately, and limiting ambition — can boost the immune system and increase longevity. Included are energy-saving suggestions about eating, working, and exercising; quizzes to determine stress level, life energy, and physical well-being; and valuable tips, charts, and advice on this controversial idea.

What a waste of TIME.......2007-09-05
You're going to take dietary and physiological advice from a dermatologist and a sociologist? While I agree with their basic premise of taking it slower in your life, some of their strategies and "theories" are a little off-base. Their basic theory regarding your energy stores and how you use them is pretty far out (when you use your allotted amount up, you die) Gee, how come I never heard about that "theory" in nursing school? I don't need to address all the particulars, just to caution you that just because they quote a few research studies doesn't mean that their theory is gospel and that you should necessarily make the dietary or other significant physiological changes. Some of them are not the wisest from the conventional medical point of view.
Yes, I agree with them: Slow down, take time to smell the roses. Work on decreasing stress in your life. Eat healthy. Exercise moderately. Gee, do ya need a book to tell you these things. Skip this one. I forced myself to finish it as it was a present, but it wasn't the most satisfying or stimulating read. By spending your money on it, all you are doing is enriching the authors so they can incorporate a little indolence into their lives!
Very Disappointing!.......2006-11-10
This book reads like a textbook. It sites research about the physiology of stress on the body. It also sites reasons to change your diet to aide your body's response to stress. It made me anxious to change my stress level, but it didn't give many practical tips for implementing stress-reducing measures in my life.
Better ways to spend your time.......2006-08-25
This book is annoyingly stupid. It's begging for attention with giving people what they want (but not necessarily what's good for them): laziness; "no sport" - plenty of stories about marathon runners who dropped dead because they were using up their energy to quickly; advise to give up on legumes because they'll kill you, unless you are a true vegetarian (in this case you need them). Medical limits for blood pressure and cholesterol, for example, are outdated and too high, and the recommendation to skip breakfast or dinner - well we had this before and I think it was well proven that this is not the best way to start or end your day. The authors may have had fun writing this book together, but there is no reason to be proud of it. While I agree that we could all benefit from doing less, with lots of really great books out there on how to slow your life down, and boost your health, this one is a complete waste of time and money.
At last, the things we love in life are actually good for us.......2003-10-11
This fun, easy-to-read book is a breath of fresh air -- especially as the winter weather and workload are looming out my window and on my desk. (Just looking at the cover relieves my stress!) The new research is intriguing and their advice for good health makes intuitive, as well as scientific, sense. I enjoyed the anecdotes, the authors' sense of humor, and their tips and strategies. Now I'm off to take a recommended "30-second nap"....

Book Description
Each year, millions of couples wed, and millions of relationships — involving brides, grooms, families, and friends — are undermined by power struggles, fights, and stress before the big event arrives. Often overrun by others' demands, couples may be too exhausted to experience the outpouring of love meant for them. Now savvy brides and grooms can turn to The Smart Couple's Guide to the Wedding of Your Dreams. It encourages couples to explore their wedding desires, be realistic about budgets, and be firm in their decisions, and it walks them through practical steps to make these goals a reality. Co-written by two therapists, themselves a happily married team, the book emphasizes recapturing the meaning and joy of the occasion while making informed choices together. Each chapter provides exercises and suggestions to help with specific decisions on vows, location, parents' roles, and more, ultimately showing couples how to express their style while honoring family and religious traditions. These decision-making skills also help establish a precedent for a long and happy marriage.

When your husband-to-be doesn't want to be a bit player at his own wedding.......2006-11-10
I'm in my 40s and getting married for the first--and only--time in a few months. My fiance was feeling a little left out of the planning process, so I bought 2 copies of this book, one for him and one for myself. It's been a great discussion tool, and we've both made lots of notes all over the pages. The book covers the details of wedding planning but with a focus on keeping the relationship and the meaning of the celebration central. No matter what other planning guides you own -- and you will need others that do go bananas over flowers and bridesmaids' dresses if that's your thing, and God knows there are plenty of them out there-- please pick up a copy, or two, of this one. It lets you convert the stress and commericalism of planning your wedding into a relationship-deepening experience.
The Real Deal on Weddings & Marriage.......2006-09-26
As relationship trainers, motivational speakers, and workshop leaders, the authors of this book have credentials. Drs. Sherven & Sniechowski wrote Be Loved for Who You Really Are (St. Martin's Press, 2003), The New Intimacy (Health Communications, 1997), and Opening to Love 365 Days a Year (Health Communications, 2000). Married since 1988, they also have the personal experience of marriage longevity in the difficult-to-navigate labyrinth of relationships. Their co-authored book, The Smart Couple's Guide has personality as well as practical advice.
Divided into fifteen chapters, Drs. Sherven & Sniechowski thoroughly discuss aspects of the wedding plan. The authors offer true-life cases from hundreds of couples as examples of those who chose to plan their wedding together. These examples are used in a variety of settings: from "Popping the Question" to "To Change Names, or Not." Dispersed throughout the book are insights from the authors' own co-created wedding. The authors even research the history behind wedding customs, yet empower the wedding couples to co-create their specific style of wedding according to the themes and traditions of their own choosing.
The Smart Couple's Guide...is not a wedding planner, but a useful source of suggestions that illustrate how a couple can plan their wedding (and marriage) together. The authors state: "By living out your commitment as a couple throughout the planning process, you will experience new possibilities and new levels of awareness." Pre-marital relationship building skills is a main theme of the book; the authors cite values such as honesty and integrity as the foundation of the wedding, not the number of tiers on the cake or names on the invitations. To strengthen those skills, the authors give the reader questionnaires regarding "The Ten Key Issues of Married Life" and "Financial Truth."
Whether it is the reader's first or fourth marriage, whether the reader is age thirty or seventy, The Smart Couples Guide to the Wedding of Your Dreams is a must-read prior to the "big day." After all, the wedding day is a step into the maze of marriage. This book will steer the reader by offering clarity and reality to the couple as they journey together.
This book can make you a hero!.......2006-05-09
How many weddings are so stressful that the most exciting thing to the newlyweds is getting the darned thing over with?
I know the feeling and so do a lot of others who've gone through the "traditional wedding routine." You know, the one where the bride-to-be is the total organizer, worker, chooser, and the groom-to-be is out of the picture until the big day.
The stress and anxiety of these scenarios will be lessened if not vanquished for any couple who is fortunate enough to read "The Smart Couple's Guide To The Wedding of Your Dreams."
How cleaver, inventive, and couple-enhancing can one book be? Judith Sherven and James Sniechowski, best-selling husband and wife relationship team, have put together a book that will make heroes out of those of us who give it as an engagement gift.
The success of any relationship relies partly on synergy. That's what happens for a couple who is made stronger in their decisions and philosophy by acting together as a power-sharing team rather than two people acting independently. This book guides the wedding couple to experience that throughout their wedding planning - from engagement through the honeymoon. That way they can experience a romantic yet sound start to their wedded life. I was intrigued all the way through this book by the inventive and creative things that most pre-wedding couples never even think about. While I don't yet have a wedding planned, I thoroughly enjoyed the book from that angle alone.
