5 out of 5 stars Are You Ready to RUMBLE............2002-01-01

I remember the excitement of opening my high school graduation gift from Aunt Beatrice. It was this book. My Aunt B assured me that this book was the key to a fulfilling and successful college career. As I begin my junior year, I reflect on my college times thus far and realize that Aunt B was right.

This book definitely helped make the transition from high school to college a smooth one. I was able to participate in all the fun games on campus with working knowledge of the correct rules. In a few cases, I was able to introduce upperclassmen to new games and intervene/referee during controversial moments in play.

In just a few months, my little brother will be graduating from high school and embarking on his college experience. I will be purchasing this vital reference volume for him. How proud he will be to put this book alongside his dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia set. This book is an excellent gift for a new grad, a college kid, or a middle-aged guy needing to brush up on his favorite games. Bottoms Up!!

I'm at a loss to describe the beauty of this book. It just resonates with my sole.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......1999-01-15

This book is a must for any college student or just someone looking to have a good drinking game experience. The simple synonyms alone for getting sick and being drunk are a reason alone to buy this book, not to mention the 50 or so games which by any standards are down right fun and "entertaining". I suggest that anyone looking for some really good drinking games buy this book, its sure to make a dull night on campus turn into a wet, beer soaked one real quick!!!

3 out of 5 stars best for bartenders.......2007-06-08

I was hoping to learn a trick or two for a party I was going to. Just a coulpe impressive tricks/conversation starters. However, most of the tricks in this book require quite a bit of set up beforehand. They are not exactly tricks you can preform with the items found at any bar. Many of them require a certain brand of matches, or you to start the trick with a new book of matches minus two that you you have prepared ahead of time. Then if someone wants you to repeat the trick you have to have another book with two matches also removed. I had hoped to learn the tricks and be able to use them when I went out to the bar, But with all the prep work in the tricks this would not be possible. If you were a bartender this may be an interesting book for you but for the public there isn't much to learn from this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-24

Although many of the "amusements" are amusing - they are also logic tricks that we did in the 3rd grade. Such as moving matchsticks around to form a shape in less than 2 moves....the book just doesn't provide enough of the "cool" tricks that I expected from the description.

Also, and my biggest complaint, is that many of the tricks use the assumption that I can palm coins, dollar bills, and other items with no effort. If I could palm items, I probably wouldn't be reading this book to learn tricks.

5 out of 5 stars So you want to learn a trick or two and amaze a few people.........2001-11-05

Miss Charming has the perfect sense of humor that every bartender in the world should have! The book is witty, light hearted and just down right funny.

Miss Charming tells a story about each trick in the book which in themselves are great, and then goes into explaining exactly how each trick is performed.

I spent a whole evening reading the book and trying out the tricks. Some of them are so easy it's scary to think that people actually fall for it, others take a little bit of practice, but fear not, Miss Charming will walk you through each step of the way!

On a flight to Tokyo recently, I had half the flight crew and everyone sitting around me enthralled for an hour as I did some of the tricks I had learned, talk about a way to make time go by quick and make a few new friends!

Miss Charming has been doing bar tricks for over 19 years and is considered one of the foremost experts...ok, I think she is the foremost expert in bar tricks!

Now get out your dollar bills, your shot glasses, and your match sticks because you are ready to start baffling and amusing your friends! Be sure to pick up a copy of "Miss Charming's Book of Bar Amusements" and keep behind the bar right next to your bartenders bible.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Creative Fun.......2001-10-23

As I read through Miss Charmings book I thought her ideas were original and in some instances very simple- that anyone could follow through with them. So I learned a few of them and off I went to try them on my friends.....let me tell you, if you want to be the attention of a party you need this book and it's amusements. Young and old will be amazed when you pick up simple bar materials and turn them into magic. It is only a matter of time before bars from all over make this standard issue for public and private bartenders. I guess that is why her book is so popular with all my friends who come to learn amusements out of this fun and creative book.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of tricks.......2001-09-14

Though written with enthusiasm by an author obviously passionate about her craft, I found the collection of tricks oddly balanced between the entirely mundane to the astoundingly expensive, to the possibly unsafe.

The book is divided into six sections. Each deals with a broad category of tricks that essentially represent garden variety magic. You'll learn how to do some manipulation of money, matches, glassware, paper, and various odds and ends commonly available at bars. The instructions are clear, as is the focus. The author is trying to effortlessly convey tricks that, in the main, can be done while a bartender is about her normal business. The instructions and illustrations make it easy to learn these simple tricks. As such, it is doubtless a valuable resource.

However, serious magic students, and even more experienced bartenders, will dismiss this work as little more than fluff. Some of the amusements even run counter to standard bar flare theory, suggesting a "trick" when the pretended act can actually be done. A handful of the "amusements" call for the creative use of fire and/or extremely flammable chemicals, which would seem potentially dangerous in a bar filled with alcohol. Many are so obvious one wonders just how impressive they'd actually be. Little attention is given to the creation of an aura of magic--showmanship, if you will--which is made even more necessary in the absence of extraordinary illusion. Fortunately, the audience for the tricks in this book will likely be those who are at least a little inebriated.

2 out of 5 stars I might use a total of two tricks..........2006-08-10

I hate leaving bad reviews of things because I know someone is trying to make money and I don't want to hinder that.

Truth is that the concept of this book was exactly what I was looking for, but it didn't have anything special in it. I might use a total of two tricks. Most of the things just come off as stupid or little clever games (i.e. with matches)... but very little magic or tricks.

2 out of 5 stars Should be called "How to look stupid".......2002-10-21

Do the stunts in this book and you're going to look thicker than a pound cake. The tricks don't ease awkward moments as it claims, instead it makes you feel more awkward than you did to begin with.

I told my friends I'd levitate an olive for them and they all gathered around the bar. After 5 mins of trying to get the trick to work, it's still obvious to those watching that the olive isn't floating at all. Suddenly you become the butt of all jokes and your friends start calling you names like "spaz".

I gave it two stars because there is one trick that is actually really good and is almost worth the price of the book. It's the one where you make a spectators finger ring link onto the stem of a borrowed bar wine glass.

2 out of 5 stars Preview a copy before buying.......2001-09-18

There is a point where simplicity converts to banality, and this book treads that line a little too closely for my tastes. Those new to bar culture may find something to wonder over here, but anyone interested in magic probably won't.

Having said that, I disagree, slightly, with others who've gone so far as to say that the book--and especially its cover--are misleading. The cover describes the tricks as "idiot-proof", and they are. The tricks are well-illustrated and competently explained. As the cover claims, you will learn how to pass a dollar bill though a lemon, and make a coin walk across the table. To be sure, there's nothing in the book that will teach you how to create the image of a levitating olive as depicted on the cover, but the cover is basically honest.

If it oversells the book at all, it does so when it claims the tricks will "amaze" friends. It's best to say, as the back cover points out, that the tricks will help smooth over awkward conversational moments. Because of the lack of anything truly breathtaking, or even much that's subtle, this book is best previewed at a local library before purchase. IIt's probably not a smart impulse buy.

3 out of 5 stars Crowd pleasing, but nothing to wet yourself over.......2001-08-13

Haven't put this book to too much use as of yet, but i can tell ou that i find it a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, they're cool tricks and will probably come in very helpful, but the tricks lack the mystifying appeal i was hoping for. FOr the most part, they're all cool tricks, but once you preform them for friends, you're giving away how it's done. I was anting soemthing that would leave my friends a little more mystified. I guess the tricks just lack the magical side i was looking for. Still impressive tricks, but they won't leave people in aww, unless they're really hammered i guess. I'd suggest combinign this book with The Complete Book of Beer CDrinking Games jsut for kicks. hope this was helpful for you. peace

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be..........2001-08-10

I purchased this book hoping to learn a few cool magic tricks I might be able to pull of in a bar. I was immediately interested by the cover of the book, which pictures an olive levitating over a martini glass. From this picture, and from the the words "Levitate an olive..." which also appear on the cover, I assumed there might be a trick inside to make an olive appear to levitate. There is, however, nothing of the sort. The olive trick turns out to be a pretty stupid bar bet that has nothing to do with even the appearance of levitation. And it only gets worse from there. Most of the tricks in this book are, as the cover does advertise, incredibly simple; the problem is most of them are so simple they are completely uninteresting. Personally I am glad I never met the author in a bar while he was researching material for this thing.

My feeling after reading this is that it is a collection of trite gags that will cause the people around you to groan and leave you sitting alone at the bar, buying your own drinks and cursing the day you ever tusted the other reviewers on this one.

Charles Baker has created what is perhaps the greatest armchair drinking book of all time.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic, but a word of caution.......2007-02-26

Many of the recipes in this book vary considerably from how the drink of the same name is prepared today. The author often calls for ingredients which can no longer be procured, but that is to be expected. For the serious cocktail enthusiast, this book is a must-have, and this inexpensive reprint means you won't want to kill yourself if you spill grenadine on it.

The previous person to review this book makes a good point, too. This is not simply a formula book of recipes, but THAT is exactly what makes it a great read. Another perfect example of this is "Cocktail Recipes from the Nineteenth Century - The Flowing Bowl", by Spencer (another recent reprint of a rare old cocktail book.)

5 out of 5 stars The Gentleman's Companion.......2003-11-26

It should be noted first, that this book is a faithful reprint (all except the title and cover :-) of the classic "The Gentleman's Companion", first published in 1939. That first edition came as a two book set: "Exotic Drink Book", and "Exotic Cookery Book". The former is the book here in question, the latter has been likewise reprinted under the title "Knife, Fork, and Spoon : Eating Around the World".

If you are expecting the same old "wad-o-drinks" type of book here, then you will be quite surprised in what you find. Mr. Baker has a dry wit, as well as a cunning charm about him. And he exercises it well as he relates to his readers the various drinks that he has collected through his travels and adventures. The recipes often consist of more prose then raw ingredients, which makes them both more interesting to browse through but at the same time slightly more difficult to work from.

For a taste of his style, here is just one of the drink recipes from this book:

SANTIAGO NIGHTCAP, from a STAY in SANTIAGO de CUBA,
in the EARLY SPRING of 1930
------This is another favour passed along to this field
representative and wine tester by the late Senor Facuno
Bacardi, it being his primary thought to donate something
to woo sleep and restore the slightly frayed physical
assembly. It is a simple drink, and would also make a
fine picker-upper. . . . Take 1 1/2 jiggers of Gold
Seal Bacardi rum, add 1 pony of orange curaco and the
yolk of 1 egg. Shake hard with cracked ice and strain
into a large saucer champagne glass.

While the formatting of these recipes may make it a bit more difficult to glean direct recipes from them, they do present a provocative and insightfull snapshot of the cocktail world of those days. Few books, before or since, have even approached this wonderfully eclectic performance.

I highly recommend this book for anybody who has an interest in classic cocktails.

5 out of 5 stars How to visit Vegas if you can't get there in person.......2006-10-18

The five star average for this book review pretty much sums it up. I found this to be a very enjoyable read and highly entertaining. You'll like this book for any of the following reasons:

1)If you enjoy gambling --particularly if you enjoy craps, but even if you know nothing about the game, it won't detract from your enjoyment.

2)If you've ever had problems with the IRS. They talk about a "kinder, gentle" IRS, but that's certainly not what Jimmy Delaney experiences.

3)If you have ever just "people watched" while you were in Vegas. They certainly come in all shapes, sizes, and attitudes, and some of the descriptions of the minor characters in this book are classic.

Someone notify Hollywood -- with all this book has to offer, they should make a movie out of this gem!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brian Rouff; The Nevada Version of Carl Hiaason .......2006-07-14

I was awake until 4:30 the other morning not because I wanted to be, but because I had to finish reading Dice Angel by Brian Rouff. What a great read. His main character Jimmy Delaney, a Las Vegas saloon owner has a warped sense of humor and drips sarcasm -- my type of guy. Jimmy has a little daughter that he loves more than anything and she is chip off the old block and an ex-wife that drips rattlesnake venom. Jimmy also has a heart as big as the Nevada desert - but he doesn't want anyone to know about it. Through all the battles he goes through in this book, you cheer for him all the way to the last page. It's a must read. Just start early enough in the day so you can still get a good night's sleep.

Keith Bettinger, Author of Fighting Crime With "Some" Day and Lenny.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a cozy afternoon.......2006-04-03

I completely enjoyed this book. I'm not much of a Vegas person- I don't even like to drive through there if I can avoid it- but the characters in this book were so engaging and the story so compeling that I didn't care where it took place. I read the book in one wonderful, fun day. I couldn't put it down. I really cared what happened to Jimmy and was thrilled when cosmic justice was served. Humor, suspence, compassion, grit- it's all here in this terrific first novel. I can't wait to read more by Brian Rouff soon!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Time in Vegas..........2006-02-25

Author Brian Rouff has created an endearing character 100%human, living the Las Vegas life. His name is Jimmy Delaney, a jaded, superficial--and most obnoxious--nightclub owner. (This is before his accountant goes missing and his assets are frozen.) Stick around, and he becomes even more colorful.

Despite stubbing my toe on Jimmy's constant use of profanity, I was immediately drawn into this engaging mystery. The scenes, dialog, and characters flow seamlessly from page to page, treating the reader to an insider's tour through Vegas, as only a local can provide. Over all, I laughed out loud, I cheered (inside), and my ADD never kicked in once.

The ending takes a nice little twist, answering this reader's question: Will Jimmy's whiskey glass remain half-empty, or is it already half-full? In a city that worships a lady named Luck, the wise discover that sometimes their only shot at deliverance depends upon their choice of perspective.

Great job, Mr. Rouff! I can't wait to read your second novel--Money Shot.

    5 out of 5 stars A Good Time Read!.......2006-01-05

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I knew I was hooked when I felt anxiety because the stack of pages in my right hand was starting to thin, I did not want this book to end. Not too often I get fully engrossed in a story. Do it again Brian!

5 out of 5 stars A sure hit at any party!.......1998-01-15

Don't you just hate it when you go to those parties where only about 6 people showed up and nothing is happening? Everybody is just standing around, drinking their Pabst Blue Ribbon, while a best of the 80's CD is blaring Tainted Love (for the seventh time in a row) in the background. You want to leave, but the host already saw you, so you're trapped. You realize you just wasted your entire Friday night. These parties don't have to be boring anymore thanks to '50 Great College Drinking Games' by Ross Bonander. Bonander has written the quintessential party book. 50 Great College Drinking Games is more than "educational", it's a humorous read. Not only did I discover new games, such as 'Suck the Sock', I also found myself laughing out loud time and time again thanks to Bonander's excellent use of pop culture references. This book encompasses all you need to know about drinking games. Take it along to any party and watch the fun ensue. It's a guaranteed hit.

5 out of 5 stars Pop-culture, wit, sarcasm, Wittgenstein and drinking games?.......1998-01-07

Hm. A drinking game book that begins with a quote from Wittgenstein and ends with a phantasmic photo invoking UCLA, rock n' roll, pro-hockey and possibly Mithraism - might this really be a philosophical treatsie on the essence of liquid competition, an existential jaunt down a road well travelled, a textual exorcism of collegiate transgressions in disguise? While perhaps only Ross could shed any penetrating light on these depthless questions, the fact that the book is authoritatively stamped "The Official Party Animal Manual" should give immediate pause to the "Three-Man, Thumper, Tupperware Two-Step" timid and the "Speed Quaters, Suck the Sock, Suck and Blow" shy. However, should the reader already be familiar with some drinking games, "50 Great College Drinking Games" is an essential companion to all social gatherings where "fun is in the air."

In addition to an attentive inventory of drinking games and their raucous rules, Ross provides the responsible imbiber with both colorful humor and searing sarcastic wit. And if this weren't enough, his prose is peppered throughout with evocative references to pop-culture. This isn't simply a book detailing the rules of drinking games regaling the reader with reveries of fraternity parties past, but instead is an ironic one that doesn't take itself seriously while at the same time never denying the reader's desire for the rules of the game. Clearly the funniest drinking game book around.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth reading, if only for the humor!!.......1997-10-20

Ross Bonander is a GREAT author. I bought this book because I am a DJ on a cruise ship. I make friends with the passengers, and they want to have a good time. This will help me accomplish their desire to have fun. There are several GREAT ideas in this book. I read through it just for contents sake, but I laughed so much! ROSS BONANDER doesn't beat around the bush. He uses vulgar language, and his descriptions paint a vivid picture in your mind. He's very honest about potential to puke, mentions concern for safety several times, and tastefully recommends professional help for those drinkers who are "too good" at these games. A must for every fraternity, and cruise ship DJ!

    Book Description

Contrary to popular belief, nightclubs are not the meat markets they are purported to be. Nine out of ten men would agree that they are more accurately a source of ego-battering rejection, frustration, and humiliation. Likewise, nine out of ten women say that for them, nightclubs are a source of unwanted attention, overt sexual advances, and negative energy.

Despite the negative publicity that nightclubs often receive, they continue to provide more opportunity for men and women to meet on the weekends than do any other venues. Yet, on any given Friday or Saturday night, only 10% of the patrons look like they're having fun and really make the most of the experience.

Why do women go to nightclubs? What do they most enjoy? What do they most hate? What do they notice about men in a club? What does a woman's choice of drink reveal about her personality and her agenda? What can a man do to get and keep the "competitive" edge on other men?

These and many other questions are answered in the first book that deals specifically with male and female interaction in the "contrived" an "unnatural" nightclub and bar settings.

The author's reasoning and approach are quite simple if you think about it. Men don't pick up women. WOMEN CHOOSE THE MEN THEY WANT TO SPEND TIME WITH! For most men, approaching and meeting women is a chore. For most women, approaching and meeting men is a choice. It always has been.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good, No-Nonsense Book.......2005-04-09

After downloading the "interesting" results of a survey from the author's website, I ordered a copy of his book. I've got to tell you it was one of the most informative no nonsense books I've ever read on the subject of social interaction in a very specific situation. I've been divorced for quite a while, and "out of the loop" so to speak. This book has helped me realize all of the things I'm doing wrong in any given situation in an already high pressure atmosphere. Thanks much for writing it.

3 out of 5 stars Some good - some bad.......2003-03-24

O.k. people, here is the breakdown. This guy reminds me of all of my friends who were good with women when I was in college. He knows his stage (nightclubs) and he knows his women (younger, wary, and yet excitable) but the universality of it is questionable.

His points are well put, and have some interesting factoids; however, I didn't buy this book for factoids but instead for, hopefully, serious breakthrough info on the subject. The latter I definitely didn't get.

For those of you 30 or over it will serve as a refresher course, but for those of you under 25 who have spent a good deal of time in nightclubs and bars, stay away. If you haven't learned most of this stuff by simple observation then shame on you (mind you that, again, it does have some interesting tid-bits).

I personally wish I wouldn't have wasted my hard earned money on this book. He offers the farm, and yet all you end up with are some fences (dress well, buy interesting drinks, etc.). Sure they're better than nothing, but not worth the money. Now, at least he has the guts to try and address the male-female dynamic from a guy's viewpoint but personally I find his perspective is a little worn.

If you are a diesant looking guy with some good stuff (confidence, creativity, healthy, etc.) already going for you I'd recommend you up the ante a bit and look into some more down to earth reading on the subject. There is new stuff popping up every day. Most of these "relationship expert" guys publish articles on the web, and a good first step would be to read them.

A good good book to start with though is "The Art of Seduction," long, but full of interesting stuff. Although I don't by anymeans use the thing religiously, it sure does bring a lot to light that you normally wouldn't think about.

2 out of 5 stars Overall this is a boring book........2003-01-18

Overall this book is boring , it is mostly for people that's probaly over the age of 30 or who has been out of the club scene. He tend to state some of the same stuff through this various chapters.

    3 out of 5 stars Date Book.......2002-11-24

I've been seeing this hot number Zelda in the bar for what seems like an eternity but never had the nerve to ask her out. Bought this book and invited her up to my apartment. To my amazement she said yes, although it could have been the martinis I was feeding her. Now she won't return phone calls. I better read chapter 2. .... Still trying to find the answers to life's persistent questions.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is ON !.......2002-11-02

All the years I've gone to clubs, I've wondered why some guys always seem to have all the luck. This book really explained some things. Now I know that meeting women in clubs is not a matter of luck; it is a combination of observation, technique, and doing specific things to set yourself apart from the crowd.

After reading Night Games and taking the survey on the author's website, I learned that a sense of humor is one of the best ways to get women to let their guards down. Using this and several of the other techniques in this book, I'm dropping like it's hot and meeting women with relative ease.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, clever... a MUST HAVE for the young-at-heart!.......1999-04-30

I have a friend who is a bar tender and he always baffled me with his clever little stunts he could do with common, house-hold objects.

Now... I'm the one who is baffling him!!! The tricks, jokes, and other bits of wonderment that are simply explained in "Stupid Bar Tricks" are fun, easy to learn, and are always a big hit when I try them out on friends!

I found the book fun to read because the explainations were easy to understand and the humorous illustrations really gave life to the content.

4 out of 5 stars Stupid Bar Tricks; Not just stupid--It's FUN!.......1999-04-23

Stupid Bar Tricks is not for magicians. This is a book for people who want to be entertainers! You don't have to be a professional to realize ways in which you can use tricks like "The Cigarette Up The Nose" or "The Texas Star" to win free drinks, impress members of the opposite sex or even break the ice with that new client. These are easy to learn tricks, stunts and comedy bits that can be performed with items that can be found in any bar or restaurant. You will not only be percieved as the "life of the party" but you will be seen as someone who is fun to be around. This book is not for everyone, just those with imagination and personality.

1 out of 5 stars Not very impressive.......1999-02-05

This book lists 27 tricks (including a pickup line and a short story), many of which I had known. I was just not very impressed when I read through it.
