5 out of 5 stars awesome book, awesome lesson.......2005-12-28

the illustrations are what got me interested in this book when I got it from a book club as a kid. It teaches a good lesson about money and how to not act spoiled, and the idea that money should not make you greedy

5 out of 5 stars Trouble with Money.......2005-12-10

I like this book because it showed me not to spend all the money i receive for special occassions on things that i may not need but i want very badly. It showed me that i need to be very careful with money and that spending it on everything isn't always a good choice.

Book Description

"The room shared by Brother and Sister is a mess because the cubs argue over who should neaten up instead of working together. Sure to make toddlers smile while they absorb an implied lesson."--Publishers Weekly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the original "Mission Organization".......2007-07-16

The first time I saw this book my younger sister and I had pushed our poor mom to the limits with our messy room. Dolls, costumes, arts & crafts projects and so much more covered every surface of the room to the point we were barely able to find our beds. One day while we out were playing with the neighborhood kids, after breaking our promise we would clean the room first, my mom went in with big black garbage bags and packed up the entire mess and put the bags in the spare room. When we got home and discovered the "theft" we were livid. After she calmed us down and gave me my favorite teddy and my sister her favorite bunny, she sat us down with this book and we read it together. Gradually we got all our toys and other stuff back and the room actually did stay clean much longer than usual. She never had to take drastic action again because she would just pull out this book whenever the room started looking overly cluttered and we'd get the picture. Now twenty years later, I'm almost obsessively neat and organized (though sometimes it's fun to make a huge mess in the process of reorganizing) and I remember this book fondly every time I undertake a big organizing project. I'm sure it's not the only children's book about cleaning a messy room, but the Berenstain humor and memorable artwork make it a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Scientific Facts not Accurate.......2007-02-07

I enjoyed this book (and others in the series) with my three girls when they were little who all are now twenty-somethings.

As a geologist, it was grating to see dinosaur model toys being referred to as being from the Pleistocene!! (the age of woolly mammoths, sabre-tooth tigers, dire wolfs etc.)

We wrote a letter to the Berenstains and got a cute letter reply from Papa Bear. He said they would correct the mistake in the next printing. OK, that was well over 20 years ago, and the book is still the same. Sigh! And people lament that our children are uninformed about science.

Now that my youngest daughter is about to get a teaching credential to teach science in elementary and middle school, maybe it's time for her to write another letter.

5 out of 5 stars Another great story from the "Bears".......2007-01-03

My 4-yr old daughter has enjoyed the shows and stories involving the Berenstein Bears & this one is just as fun. The story covers the importance of a neat room but throws in some humor during the "pick-up" or cleaning periods involving the entire family. A great short read for little ones who are just learning the importance of cleaning up after themselves. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2005-12-29

This is a great book to teach kids to clean up after themselves and what happens when they don't. In this book, mama gets so fed up with the mess in the cubs' room, that she comes back with a huge box and starts tossing all their things into it. Much at the cubs' protest, all their favorite toys are tossed inside. The illustrations are just wonderful in this book. They show a puzzle half finished and covered with cobwebs, spilled cups and drinks and dust and dirt all over everything. It's just very clear how nasty a room can get when it's not kept in order. Papa bear comes to the rescue and makes the cubs their very own organization center (must have watched HGTV out there in his garage where he makes his furniture!) where they have a toybox and a pegboard to store the items in the room. And, he makes boxes with labels to stack in their closet for their smaller items so they don't come tumbling out onto their heads anymore.

Everyone is very happy with the solution, especially the cubs since now they have a room they can enjoy themselves and with their friends.

Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2005-12-28

I loved this book as a kid but unfortunately I could never live up to it and am the biggest slob ever and I'm in my 20's

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginning Readers!.......2007-04-14

This delightful classic makes a great first book for the child who is ready to read to him/herself. Its rhythmic rhymes and colorful pictures provide plenty to keep the young reader from losing interest from beginning to end. Its also an excellent book to read to very young children. You may hear them reciting the catchy rhymes to themselves. This is a book well worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful beginner book!.......2007-01-08

This is one my son's favorite books. We started reading it to him when he was about six months old. Now, he's two years old and still absolutely loves it - when we read to him and when he "reads" to us.

Like all Berenstain's beginning books, this book is a wonderful vocabulary lesson. Our son has clearly expressed his understanding of "inside," "outside," "upside down," etc. for the last six months. When our friends and family comment on his impressive comprehension we always say, "It's thanks to the Berenstains."

1 out of 5 stars A bore..........2006-07-06

My 10-month old babies have no interest in this book, and they love board books!

5 out of 5 stars TIMELESS.......2005-10-14

I read this book to my boys 30+ years ago, and am just thrilled to be buying it for a new grandson. I had no idea it was still available new. It is so cute and kids absolutely love it.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book to your child with a big cardboard box.......2005-05-09

This book has become one of the favourites of my 18-month old boy. After having read this book to him a number of times, his grandma brought out a cardboard box large enough to for my boy to fit in comfortably. He can now go inside the box and come out of the box and be very proud of himself!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Children's Book with a message.......2007-02-17

This book is an excellent book to read your children. Not only is it entertaining, it actually has a valuable message for your children. Imagine being able to entertain and teach at the same time. What a novel concept!

5 out of 5 stars Love these books!.......2007-02-01

I've been reading them since I was a child, now my little girls have all of my old ones and we continue to add to the colection. GREAT BOOKS!

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Book - a review of "The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings".......2006-02-18

I am totally baffled as to why this Berenstain series is called "First Time Books". Nothing could be further from the truth. The vocabulary is sophisticated (words like 'Killer Koyote', 'Avenger', 'Equestrienne') and there are way too many words per page to make this appropriate even for a first grader. [In fact, at least one of the kid's reviews here was written by a 10 year old!]

Note: Take a look at the page offered in Amazon's "Search inside this book" feature to judge for yourself.

And while I like the moral of this book, I find that it suffers from a reversal of heart at the end. In this case, after having made the point (very well I thought) that children *should* be thankful for what they have; the story suddenly reverses course and has Mama and Papa caving in and planning to buy the desired toys anyway. What gives?

To me this counters the good message of being thankful, with the supposition that if they `just wait' children will eventually get what they desire.

from the book:

So while Papa set the table and Mama started supper,
Sister went upstairs to play with her Bearbie doll, and
Brother tried to reach the next level on one of his video
games.

"You know, my dear," said Papa. "There are birthdays and
Christmas coming. Do you have any ideas for the cubs?"

"I thought perhaps a Just Married Bearbie for Sister and
a couple of video games for Brother might be nice," Mama
said. "What do you think?"

"I think we should count our blessings too," said Papa.

I don't know what other children make of this mixed message, but mine were happy that the cubs were going to get what they wanted.

Four Stars. [B-] The book starts off very well. It *does* convey the message that we should be thankful for what we have and not want new things all the time just because our friends get/have them. But in my opinion, you will have to have a discussion about the ending to make sure that message sticks.

3 out of 5 stars Counting blessings.......2006-02-04

I think that this book was good. i thought that this book was good becauseit was mabey helping poeple count there blessings.I think that you should read this book if you want to read a little kid book.It is a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Not the first time........2006-01-04

This book is ok, but I think they've already learned about "counting their blessings" in "Get the Gimmies." That's why I gave it a three!

4 out of 5 stars A Bit Old For 4.......2006-02-25

My son automatically LOVES anything Berenstain Bears, but this book was a bit old for him (not to mention girly)

5 out of 5 stars A book that teaches you self confidence.......2005-08-12

This book tells the story of sister bear when she meets a young cub that recently arrived to town. This new cub is a little annoying, and at first it makes sister sad.
But she finally realizes that with self confidence, she can be herself, and have good times with her real friends.
My 4 year old loves it.

5 out of 5 stars In-Crowed.......2001-07-21

When a new hip cub moves into town everyone is amazed by her. They start dressing like her, acting like her etc etc. Sister is the only one who is not in the "in-crowed" what is she to do?

This book teachs kids that you don't need to dress a certain way or act a certain way just to be liked.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2000-08-02

This is such a great book. It shows little kids that no matter what there is always good in people. Even if they don't show it right away.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book, a real wakeup call!.......2006-10-12

I'll warn you before buying this book, you might find it to be a real wakeup call. Brother and Sister get involved in a TON of activities and are literally being drug by their parents someplace every day. Whether it's horseback riding, swimming, soccer or dance, Mama is toting them from here to there while trying to fit her own schedule into the mess. Papa helps sometimes, but he's busy with his work too. When the car finally breaks down and Sister and Brother are late for some event, Mama just goes upstairs and cries. This upsets the cubs and Brother runs off into the woods to get his Papa. Mama is okay when he arrives and they have a family meeting right then and there to decide what part of their schedules is going to be eliminated. It really helps you put into place how busy your life can become when you're not looking. Love this book in our house and we HIGHLY recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars The Berentstain Bears And Too Much Pressure.......2003-10-03

This was a very chaotic book. It has lots of color and I would recommend it for ages 6-11. This book teaches you how to balance responsibilities, interests, talents, and make time out for family fun, chores, and sharing.

5 out of 5 stars The Berenstain Bears And Too Much Pressure.......2003-10-02

This book is about to much pressure. Brother and Sister Bear get involved in swimming, computer club, baseball, ballet, art, horse back riding and many other things also. When they are getting ready to go to ballet and baseball practice the car will not start. And the cubs are yelling and screaming go Mama go. We are going to be late. After all of that ciaos Mama Bear is just fed up with all of that and so then she starts to break down crying. Brother Bear runs and goes and gets Papa Bear and they go into the house with Mama and Sister Bear. The lesson this book teaches is that if you get to involved or busy with things you might get to much pressure from it. I was not to sure on the age level for this book. But the book can teach you how to level things out, because if you do to much you get under pressure.

5 out of 5 stars Too Much To Do........2002-09-09

The Bear Family has become the busiest family in Bear Country. Not because of all the work they have to do, but because of all the activities and organizations they are involved. After the family has a night of bad dreams involving the overworked schedule and Mama has a crying spell when the car won't start, the family sits down to straighten things out.

This book, in a subtle way, reminds us all about how precious life is and how valuable time is. It illustrates how overcommitting oneself can be detrimental and it even touches upon the dangers of listening to peer pressure. In this era of go-go-go, it's a helpful reminder to us all.

4 out of 5 stars Berenstain Bears and Too Much Pressure.......1997-10-27

Being 14 I remember reading many of teh Berenstain Bears Series. This one I picked from the library not too long ago, for a project at school. This book not only shows the result of pressure, but also the result of following friends, as Brother and Sister did when they decided to join up for certain activites.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Do as I say, not as I do.......2003-12-10

This book is a humorous account of the Bears on vacation. When the Bears arrive at their vacation house, Papa Bear points out all of the dangers and things to avoid. But he promptly ignores his own advice, with fearful consequences. The book has some tension, but it's not too scary. Some children may pick up on the message that when a parent advises against doing something, there is usually a good reason and that those who ignore the advice may get hurt. The text is presented in rhyme, and there are about 550 words.

3 out of 5 stars I feel so sorry for Papa Bear.......2002-12-03

Poor, poor Papa Bear... In THE BEARS' VACATION, by Stan and Jan Berenstain, Small Bear gets taught a few simple rules for when you're at the beach. And although this seems harmless, for every rule Papa Bear recites, something happens to him. For instance,Rule number six is to keep a sharp lookout whil you are out on a boat. Easy enough, right? Well, as Papa Bear 'keeps a look out' for Small Bear, a huge ocean liner comes up from the opposite direction than the way Papa Bear looks. All in all, I found this a fairly humoring story. I gave it a 3 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars tree bears in a vacation.......2002-04-06

I give four stars to this book because it is very fun.I choose this book to tell you how good this book is.The most thing that i like is when the bears'family were going to a vacation. And I liked it when the dad of the little Bear was showing the little bear all the rules of the beach.I think other students would like to read this book and review this book it is very good and very fun I recommend you to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Childhood Favorite Comes Home........2001-06-02

I searched and searched the attic of my parents home but could not find it. Now that I have a son of my own, there was no way his library was going to be without Bears' Vacation. It is a treasure to me, and hopefully one for him, as the humorous yet deeply affectionate relationship between father and son is evident. It was probably the colors, the illustrations, that drew me to the Berenstains works as a child. Now my favorite in the series is my son's to keep as well.

1 out of 5 stars No life jackets.......2000-08-08

How can any book about water safety not include life jackets? Not only are they not mentioned, the Bears are never shown wearing them. We spend lots of time around water, and I don't appreciate having to explain to my kids why they have to wear life preservers when the Berenstain Bears don't.

"The usually compatible Brother and Sister Bear are fighting--all day long! Mama Bear helps them realize that everyone argues once in a while, even with loved ones."--The Reading Teacher.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2006-08-29

This book is great. It starts with Brother and Sister getting along. Then Sister has her feet in Brother's face and he gets angry. Then she runs off and hogs the bathroom. They act like total jerks to each other. Finally they make up at the end and talk to each other again.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Young Children.......2006-03-12

I really enjoy reading the Berenstain Bears books to my two children (ages 5 & 7). They do a wonderful job of modeling important life lessons. This book shows how one little incident can snowball into a big fight, and sometimes even draw parents into an argument.
My only disappointment: I wish the authors had shown the cubs apologizing to each other. The story ends with, "So Brother and Sister Bear hugged and made up. And got along just beautifully-until the next time, anyway." The story shows them fighting, so it would have been better balanced if they had also modeled the "making-up" process. When the cubs realize that they don't remember what started the fight, they simply stop fighting. Mama & Papa do not have to sit through a whole "who wronged whom" session.
Anyway, it is a good springboard for discussion of "what would you do?" and "why do you think s/he did that?" with young children. I would definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A great lesson!.......2002-04-14

Brother Bear and Sister Bear are in a big fight. They are not speaking to each other and if they are they don't say anything nice.

This teachs kids how even if you and a brother or sister are fighting how to work through it. It is a great book for kids!

3 out of 5 stars what do you do when two bears get in a fight?.......2001-10-20

This book reminds me so much of my family, one day you'll be nice and the next you're picking at each other non stop!

this story is so fantastic because it's realistic and it happends to everybody! Brother & sister bear always get along but not today they're picky, sister bear takes too long in the bathroom and brother bear wont sit with sister bear on the school bus! but how does mama and papa bear stop them? read it and take some advise!

5 out of 5 stars Those battling Bears!.......2001-03-24

"The Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight," by Stan and Jan Berenstain, is another wonderful entry in this excellent series of illustrated children's books. In this volume, there's trouble brewing in the Bear family when Brother and Sister Bear start feuding. But, with a little helpful guidance from their caring parents, the sparring siblings learn some life lessons about fighting--and about making up.

This book pairs an easy-to-read text with colorful illustrations. These semi-human bears have an amusingly "cartoony" look to them, and the best of the book's illustrations contain delightful details. I especially love the pictures that show the Bears going through their daily routine--eating breakfast, riding the bus to school, etc. I give "The Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight" an enthusiastic recommendation.

Book Description

What fun! What excitement! What a nuisance. At least that's the way Sister Bear feels. If it isn't being fed, burped, or diapered, it's being dandled, cuddled, or kitchy-kitchy-kooed. Yes, Sister's pretty fed up with the fuss everyone's making over the new baby. Even the dolls make her angry, because they remind her of the baby. Then Sister gets a special homework assignment and, with a little help from wise old Mama, comes to believe that this new baby might just be a nifty addition to the Bear clan.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book to introduce a new family member with........2007-01-10

We got this book before my daughter was born to read to our 2 year old son. We had hoped that it would ease the transition from being an only child to an older brother. This book is easy to read, isn't too long and has great illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet edition to the Berenstain Family.......2001-07-15

The Berenstain books are some of my 4 year olds favorites. She loved this book - who wouldn't love little Honey Bear? This would be a great book for those bringing home a new baby!

4 out of 5 stars Taming Jealousy Aimed at a New Baby.......2001-06-22

Sister Bear looks at her new sister, Honey, and proclaims, "What a nuisance!" while Brother Bear plays happily with Honey. From Sister Bear's perspective, Honey brings disruption and draws the attention away from Sister Bear. Brother Bear remembers what it was like when Sister Bear was born, so he doesn't find it too disruptive. The story looks at how to make a young sibling with a new baby sister or brother feel better.

Sister Bear notices that Honey is "crying, feeding, burping, spitting up, and diapering around the clock." "And when it wasn't those things, it was cuddling, dandling, fussing, and kitchy-cooing . . . or shopping, shopping, and more shopping . . . ."

Sister Bear is not fond of the smell of deployed baby diapers, and likes it even less when she is asked to wash out the diapers.

Mother Bear notices that there is a problem when Sister Bear leaves Honey out of a drawing of her family for a school project. Sister Bear explains that "there wasn't enough room on the paper!"

Mother Bear pulls out the old videos of when Sister Bear was a baby, and Sister Bear sees that she got the same treatment that Honey is getting now. Sister Bear goes back up to her room, and draws Honey into the picture.

It's bedtime, and Sister Bear wants to know, "'Mama,' said Sister, 'could we take a peek at the baby first?'"

"'You know something?' she whispered, 'She is kind of cute.'"

As you can see, young siblings of new babies often feel displaced and disgruntled by all of the attention the new baby gets and the attention that they do not receive. Parents would do well to share this book with that older child. If you do have videos, films, or photographs of when the child was younger, those are good to look at as this story suggests. Naturally, the best thing to do is to use the new baby as a way to make the older child feel more important and loved. That has to begin before the baby comes home.

After you read this book, also think about ways that you can find out how your child is feeling before problems arise. Bedtime is a great occasion for such chats.

Help others find the bright side of change . . . always!

4 out of 5 stars Good book that stands out among recent BB releases.......2000-08-29

It has been my concern and the concern of other critics and fans of the Berenstain Bears that over the past number of the year, quality has yielded to quantity as we have seen an explosion of titles from Stan and Jan Berenstain but less substantive topics and quality illustrations (The Berenstain Bears Baby Bear Board Books, Jellybean Books, and titles like "The Berenstain Bears and the Mad, Mad, Mad Toy Craze" are examples). And just when you thought they had pulled out all the stops in trying to derive even heftier profits by adding a new member to the family, it turns out that planning and care went into the creation of this book and it stands out among recent Berenstain Bears releases. The book, along with the prequel titled "The Birds, the Bees, and the Berenstain Bears," published earlier this year, was intended to address many of the issues that were neglected in the classic "Berenstain Bears New Baby." Thankfully, Stan and Jan have done a fine job and my faith (though only wavering slightly) in this series is once again strong. I do encourage parents and children to check out this title as it does illustrate the challenges associated with jealously many kids may feel when attention is suddenly focused upon a new infant. Stan and Jan have said themselves that they have been considering this book for a long time and I think this shows itself positively--thought and energy has been put into this title and I wish that the Berenstain family might consider this correlation in the future. You can't rush art, and with over 30 new titles in the past two years, some might say the Berenstain Bears were/are being sacrificed in this nature. Whatever your opinions on the topic, The Berenstain Bears and Baby Makes Five is a good book and one you should definitely add to your Bears collection.

5 out of 5 stars Old Hat, New Hat.......2007-01-10

I purchased this delightful book as a Christmas gift for my two-year-old grandson as my daughter had checked it out from the public library and he loved it. He was thrilled to receive his very own copy and has it memorized. It is a classic and also delighted my children.

4 out of 5 stars =D!.......2006-12-11

This book is really cute. How a bear wants a new hat but cant find one. So the store clerk comes out with a whole bunch of hat's, but the bear doesn't like them. Then the bear ends up picking his old hat.

5 out of 5 stars My childhood favorite... and my daughter's, too!.......2006-07-30

When I was searching for new books for my 18m old daughter, I came across this favorite from my childhood.

When Berenstein bear decides to trade his "old hat" for a "new hat" he tries many different styles (too big, too small, too flat, too tall). Turns out, his old hat is just right! It's still one of the cutest books ever written.

Sometimes, my daughter could care less about books I like, but she chooses this one time and time again.
