Book Description

Teaching First-Year College Students is a thoroughly expanded and updated edition of Teaching College Freshmen, which has become a classic in the field since it was published in 1991. The book offers concrete suggestions about specific strategies and approaches for faculty who teach first-year courses. The new edition is based on the most current research on teaching and learning and incorporates information about the demographic changes that have occurred in student populations since the first edition was published. The updated strategies are designed to help first-year students adjust effectively to both the academic and nonacademic pressures of college. The authors also help faculty understand first-year students and show how their experiences in high school have prepared¾or not prepared¾them for the world of higher education.

4 out of 5 stars Useful insights and ideas.......2007-06-05

Having just finished my first semester teaching first year college students, I'm glad I have this resource and will certainly be using it more in the future. The authors summarize a lot of research related to how current first year students perceive themselves and education, and they suggest ways to develop courses to meet their instructional needs.

They also include a lot of suggestions for different aspects of course organization and practice, from developing a syllabus to the first course meeting to assessments. Not everything will work in every situation, but there is enough variety that everyone is likely to find something to try out.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Five Freshmen.......2006-04-10

"What scares you Jalen? Death, said Jalen,... because I can't imagine a world without me in it." The cockiness that was the Fab Five is captured perfectly by Mitch Albom in his book the Fab Five; Basketball, Trash Talk and the American Dream. Like Albom's other books Tuesdays with Morrie and 5 People You Meet in Heaven, his story telling engulfs the reader and transforms a normal story into a legendary tale. Albom recognizes the important interaction between people in their actions and conversations and captures that in his writing. This story, the Fab Five, was a great book and one of the best for any sports fan. The "Greatest Class Ever Recruited", as Albom called them, is a great story that is told from behind the scenes, during the Fab Five's historic career at the University of Michigan. The Fab Five by Albom is the finest sports book because Albom's humorous and stylish writing brings to life the events surrounding five freshmen that transformed college basketball.
The Fab Five is a book about Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, the fabulous five freshmen at the University of Michigan. A group assembled in many different ways, each contributing a unique story to what brought them to Ann Arbor. Albom takes his first few chapters describing the intricate lines that connected each player to Ann Arbor. Jalen and Chris were from Detroit and went to UofM because they were always best friends. Ray Jackson and Jimmy King are from Texas. Ray Jackson was noticed accidentally while scouts were in Texas recruiting other players. For Jimmy King, he came to UofM because Juwan Howard, his roommate on a recruiting trip, was going. And to put it all together, Juwan became a Michigan Wolverine because his recently diseased grandmother wanted him to go to UofM. Together they became the Fab Five and marched their way on campus and took the college basketball world by storm making it to back-to-back NCAA men's national championship appearances.
The caliber of talent that sounds this book is one for the history books. However, the Fab Five would not be the book it was without the writing and story telling ability of Mitch Albom. Albom has been voted the number one sports writer an unprecedented seven times by the Associated Press Sports Editors. He has hosted a TV show on ESPN and written many famous books as well as a sports column for the "Detroit Free Press". His ability to touch every reader regardless of background is rare. He makes people cry reading Tuesdays with Morrie and people stand up in cheer for the `91 Michigan basketball team in the Fab Five. Undoubtedly, Albom is one of the best writers in American and is writing about one of the best sports teams America has ever witnessed.
Albom accurately describes the sequence of events leading five high school seniors to main-stream college freshman superstars. But one of the things that makes this story one for the ages is that while on many teams today it is rare to see two freshmen starting a game, in 1991 the Fab Five were five freshman players who all started on a team that made it to the NCAA men's Championship basketball game. Having five freshman start a national championship game is unheard of and still to this day, unmatched. Albom predicts, "There will never be another group like the Fab Five." Through what brought them to Michigan, through every behind the scenes event, through every exciting and electrifying game, this book comes to life in front of the readers' eyes. As the book progresses the plot thickens for these young athletes as if Albom himself wrote the story. Every big game and tournament game was commentated as if live from the radio. Albom writes, "And with 21 seconds left, Michigan lead by just a basket, 71-69. `No three-point-shots,' fisher yelled." The games brought a sense of involvement for the reader taking them back in time to the game. With writing style that is clear and descriptive, and while combined with the dazzling games provided by the Michigan Basketball team, this leads to a suspenseful, well illustrated book that makes the heart pump and adrenaline rush. While watching the suspenseful games, Albom knew greatness at the very moment it happened and was there to preserve ever moment of history in his book; a book about kids who became "The Greatest Class Ever Recruited."
They had become the most popular names and faces in college basketball. In Ann Arbor, they sold jerseys and shorts for a hundred and fifty dollars total; "They sold out in a heartbeat," Albom wrote. Stories like these make this book different than any other sports book, a book written while the events occurred with detailed stories nobody else could get. He also wrote about that one game they all walked onto the court with their fashionably baggy shorts, black socks and black shoes revolutionizing college basketball, and he was there to catch every story and detail. Black socks, black shoes and baggy shorts all surprised people watching college basketball. Later looking back, people would contribute these five freshmen as revolutionizing basketball and creating its image today. Albom knew this and felt it was necessary to capture their uniqueness in this book. Mitch Albom, like the rest of the world knew greatness while it was happening and the passion and enthusiasm that he wrote with to illustrate that greatness he was witnessing is another example of why this book is so fabulous.
Albom also included inside stories, taking the reader to a place only a few were able to see. Inside the games, inside the practices and inside the family that was the Fab Five. When Jalen walked in the first day as a freshman and announced, "Freshmen verse ya'll," everyone in the gym was stunned. Where most freshmen come in to find themselves at the bottom of the barrel, these freshmen came in and ran right to the top. After saying, "Freshmen verse ya'll," the five freshman went on to win three scrimmages against the upper classmen. Albom wrote, "The Fab Five has been born." While many people could watch the televised games and see for themselves the spectacle surrounding these freshmen, he took this audience backstage and incorporated these stories that give the reader more than they could otherwise see. Stories about crazy pranks to trash talking rants and bizarre interviews to the baggy shorts and black socks and shoes, is why Fab Five gives the reader more than a sports book. It gives the reader a legendary, and even though no previous knowledge is necessary a substantial amount of time is essential because putting the book down once the readers starts if difficult.
The Fab Five is a humorous, entertaining and well written book, but furthermore, it is an inside look at one of the greatest college basketball stories. Mitch Albom, as one of America's most heralded writers, gives one of his best writing performances for his perfectly illustrated, historical tale of "The Greatest Recruiting Class Ever." He captivated my attention and sparked my interest in Michigan Basketball because of his urban style humor and story telling ability. While most other historical accounts tend to be boring, Mitch Albom captivates his readers and provides one of the best books about sports; a must read for any sports fan. Albom quoted Jalen Rose, "they'll be talking about us for 20 years." This is true about the Fab Five and the Fab Five will be talked about for many years to come

5 out of 5 stars No doubt........2004-12-24

With all the kids going to the pros now this book just gets more and more interesting. College hoops may never be the same as it was when the fab five were together. Although it may be wrong to say they were the reason for so many changes, they were certainly style agents of the nth degree. No doubt about the power of youth and potential and Albom captures all of it with a lot of excitement and enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Basketball Team Ever Assembled............2004-03-28

This book is excellent by far. I read this book whenever I'm bored, and it still excites me to this day. I can just flashback and remember what I was doing during the time the Fab Five was wrecking havoc on the college hardwoods. I still believe dat dis book is the greatest book Mitch Albom has ever written. He's already my favorite sports columnist in the world. Just like another person typed, if you love basketball buy this book. If you don't still buy this book, because you will grow to love college basketball.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sports books ever.......2004-01-17

This is an amazing in-depth look at the most popular and ballyhooed basketball team ever, Michigan's Fab Five. As a huge maize-and-blue fan I have read this masterpiece countless times but it shows all the details of running a major basketball program, the troubles that Steve Fisher had to deal with, and talks about the complex lives that Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson led and lead. Pickthis one up now.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2003-12-17

Mitch Albom is supposedly a newspaper writer and journalist. Yet somehow he managed not to notice the fact the subjects of this book (The Fab Five) were paid over $600,000 to attend the University of Michigan.

This means that either:
A. Mitch knew about the payments and therefore all the material he wrote concerning the Michigan basketball program is suspect because he was in on the coverup.

OR

B. Mitch didn't know about the payments and therefore all the material he wrote concerning the Michigan basketball program is suspect because he didn't even notice that the college kids he was covering were being paid over a half million dollars to play basketball.

Book Description

In the fall of 1999, New York Times education reporter Jacques Steinberg was given an unprecedented opportunity to observe the admissions process at prestigious Wesleyan University. Over the course of nearly a year, Steinberg accompanied admissions officer Ralph Figueroa on a tour to assess and recruit the most promising students in the country. The Gatekeepers follows a diverse group of prospective students as they compete for places in the nation's most elite colleges. The first book to reveal the college admission process in such behind-the-scenes detail, The Gatekeepers will be required reading for every parent of a high school-age child and for every student facing the arduous and anxious task of applying to college.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for non-college educated parents.......2007-04-07

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most helpful. Having no experience with the college admissions process, my husband and I felt somewhat lost in preparing our children for what would be required and/or expected by top colleges. The book gives insight into many scenarios, the brightest, the challenged, those who haven't given their best effort...and those, like our children, who were first generation. I was encouraged to read that admissions counselors consider non-college educated parents in regard to a students lower SAT scores. Although our kids both fell well within the top 10% in class rankings with highly rigorous courses of study, their SAT scores were not as impressive as their peers (who all seemed to have college educated parents). With so much pressure to perform on the SATs we were initially alarmed that our kids wouldn't get into the universities of their choice. After reading through an admission counselor's thought process as he considered an application I felt more confident that our children would be afforded a fair hearing based on so much more than their test scores. I am deeply appreciative for Mr. Steinberg's success at giving a realistic look at the process and for Wesleyan's and the many students' willingness to allow a viewing into a private area of their lives. I recommend that parents read this early in their children's high school years and buy it as a gift for their high school counselors if they haven't yet read it.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read!!!.......2007-01-13

If you have a child embarking upon the college admissions process and has his/her eyes on the most competitive colleges in the nation, read this book. those who think that private school kids get the same education as public school kids, read this book. If you thought only athletes are recruited, read this book. this book is well written and eye opening. go get it.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!.......2006-02-19

What a great book...The inside scoop on the hidden world of admissions. I've worked in an admissions office before (at a highly competitive school) and this was pretty much on target.

Steinberg's narrative style was enjoyable, making this a quick, easy read. The anecdotes make you wish the book would never end, really. I even cried at one part. I want to know where the students are now that were tracked through the book!

This would esp. be a good book for any rising junior in high school...

A couple quotes from "The Gatekeepers" I found quite inspiring...

--From a HS guidance counselor to one of her students re: the entire admissions process: "If they spent a month with you and rejected you then you could feel bad about yourself. They're only rejecting a bunch of pieces of paper, not you."

--From a student's application essay: "I have big plans, but I also have contingency plans. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou's mother advised her to `hope for the best, be prepared for the worst, and you'll be ready for everything in between'."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-10-16

As a former admission officer, I found the book to be quite honest and descript. Unveiling the process behind the ever-elusive curtain, it is a book for anyone who is truly interested in how a class is shaped on a College or University campus. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and was captivated at the stories of the students.

Meanwhile, he's trying his best to capture the attention of Julia, the freshman goddess. In the process, Scott manages to become involved in nearly everything the school has to offer. So while he tries to find his place in the confusing world of high school, win Julia's heart, and keep his sanity, Scott will be recording all the details for his sibling's—and your—enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars New Life for an Old Formula.......2007-10-04

You've seen it before: boy goes to high school; boy faces upper classman bullies; boy yearns for cute girl; cute girl ignores boy; boy gets buried by inordinate work demands. And yada yada, high school without end, amen.

Nevertheless, David Lubar goes where angels fear to tread, breathing new life into an old formula. And he pulls it off with minimal plot to carry his narrative, instead counting on a winsome protagonist named Scott Hudson who writes diary (though he loathes the word) entries to his as-yet unborn baby brother (yes, his mom has shocked the household by announcing she is pregnant for the first time since Scott himself was born).

Characterization and humor carry the day in this book. Scott's voice is beguilingly frank and funny. He writes lists that roll off the pages like David Letterman "Top Ten" lists. He refers to his embryonic brother as "smelly" and "stomach virus." He takes a run at running for school office, winning a part in the school play, and writing Pulitzer dispatches for the school newspaper's sports section (trying not to insult the football team's 0-for-Forever pigskin player/goons).

The book has its serious undercurrents, too. A suicide attempt by a fellow classmate gives Scott pause over his own behavior toward the desperate student. A girl with more hardware (studs, pins, and assorted other alloys) on her face than True Value's tool aisle burrows her way into his conscience as he continues his quest for the princess-from-afar character, Julia. Old friends (Kyle, Patrick) are lost, and new friends (Wesley the Terror of J.P. Zenger High) emerge from unexpected quarters.

Best of all, for my money, is the wordplay and educational tour de force provided by a series of scenes in Scott's English class with Mr. Franka. Allusions are abundant to great books, engaging poems, and all manner of word play (euphemisms, Tom Swifties, oxymorons, etc.). You'll feel like you're going to school again (or, if you're already there, like you're sitting in a GOOD teacher's class for once). School -- and a terrific little book -- is in session! Recommended, this book has appeal to boys and girls alike from Grades 7 on up.

5 out of 5 stars Adults can appreciate it too!.......2007-08-03

It's been decades since my freshman year in high school (and, yes, the cliche "where did the time go?" applies), so a book about that fated year in student life doesn't generally flip my "must read" switch. But my niece, who will be frosh in a matter of weeks, convinced me, via a glowing telephone review, not to pass up David Lubar's SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE.

This novel about Scott Hudson's first year in high school features a kid with a blessedly even keel, a refreshing openness to acquiring learning, and the ability to pile on after-school activities without clobbering his grades. For Scott, Spanish turns out to be his most incomprehensible class because a series of teachers with heavy accents from countries like France and Australia teach it. But English is his favorite class, as his teacher, Mr. Franka, introduces word play "Tom Swifties" and tosses out an enigmatic hint about a poem about vampires. Franka deepens Scott's already present love of language; at one point Scott declares, "Words were too important to be used like blobs of paint. I mean, when someone can come up with stuff as amazing as 'caverns measureless to man,' people have no excuse for spouting gibberish and calling it art." Bravo, Scott.

Lubar winningly incorporates many nuggets to entice young readers to read other works. Scott is enthusiastic about THE PRINCESS BRIDE, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, and ENDER'S GAME, not to mention that mysterious vampire poem that Scott tracks down. And the author turns SLEEPING FRESHMEN into a lively demonstration of various writing styles as Scott, in his lists, journal, and articles, puts into practice many of the things Mr. Franka teaches. People (young and not so young) who read this book will, it's hoped, also catch some of the joyful verve of the written word. I think I'll check out THE PRINCESS BRIDE, the one of the three above I haven't read yet.

But SLEEPING FRESHMEN is more than a promoter of love for language. It is also a guide of sorts for those making their way through that crucial, formative year of high school. Although this novel doesn't tackle the harsh realities that students in some high schools face; it provides sensible, solid values. Values which Scott basically works out for himself. He begins the year with a certain group of friends and with a crush on one girl, but as he progresses, he realizes that being tugged toward other people isn't the downer he feared at all. He also faces change in his own home with a sense of wry humor and increasing acuity of "vision."

SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE isn't pat or superficial. It certainly isn't unbearably weighty or tragic. It's a gallop through Scott's freshman year, and it's witty, light on its feet, and just a pleasure to read. If you are about to embark on the freshman adventure or if you've been there and done that, this book has something for you.

3 out of 5 stars Sleeping Freshman Never Lie.......2007-06-01

This book was pretty shaky at first reading it because I thought it was going to be really boring, but by page 80 it started heating up. Scott is basically an average kid with a small group of friends who call themselves the 4 musketeers. His group breaks up and Scott is lost in the world of high school. Later he finds Wesley who used to beat up on him and Lee who eventually he becomes good acquaintances with. The reason I gave this book 3 stars was because I wasn't on the edge of my seat while reading it. From my perspective Scott was really a weird kid who is on his own and which makes him a lot different than the other kids in a bad way. This book was decent and I will recommend it to anyone who has a lot of free time.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Book Ever!.......2007-04-30

I loved this book. It made me cry, laugh, and think about my future high school years. I would recommend it to anyone who just wants to have a good time. I couldn't set it down until I finished the very last page!

5 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read.......2007-01-03

One rather lazy summer day, I went to the library. On a lark I picked up this book from a display shelf, opened it when I got home, and read the entire thing. I've checked it out 3 times since then. This novel is filled with wry, subtle humor which is an unusual find in a young adult book, whose preoccupations usually don't stretch farther than skinny girls in bikinis and getting drunk. The very character is very amusing and I laughed quite a bit, and smiled at every sentence. I also shared with him a love of reading and English class. I even made up some of my own "Tom Swifties"(you'll have to read the book) because that's just the kind of weird person that I am. But I digress, anyone who enjoys wry humor(me) and love to writes or just loves English(guess who) you will definitely enjoy this novel.

    Book Description

African Americans and Latinos earn lower grades and drop out of college more often than whites or Asians. Yet thirty years after deliberate minority recruitment efforts began, we still don't know why. In The Shape of the River, William Bowen and Derek Bok documented the benefits of affirmative action for minority students, their communities, and the nation at large. But they also found that too many failed to achieve academic success. In The Source of the River, Douglas Massey and his colleagues investigate the roots of minority underperformance in selective colleges and universities. They explain how such factors as neighborhood, family, peer group, and early schooling influence the academic performance of students from differing racial and ethnic origins and differing social classes.

Drawing on a major new source of data--the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen--the authors undertake a comprehensive analysis of the diverse pathways by which whites, African Americans, Latinos, and Asians enter American higher education. Theirs is the first study to document the different characteristics that students bring to campus and to trace out the influence of these differences on later academic performance. They show that black and Latino students do not enter college disadvantaged by a lack of self-esteem. In fact, overconfidence is more common than low self-confidence among some minority students. Despite this, minority students are adversely affected by racist stereotypes of intellectual inferiority. Although academic preparation is the strongest predictor of college performance, shortfalls in academic preparation are themselves largely a matter of socioeconomic disadvantage and racial segregation.

Presenting important new findings, The Source of the River documents the ongoing power of race to shape the life chances of America's young people, even among the most talented and able.

      Book Description

In 2002, the Policy Center on the First Year of College (supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Atlantic Philanthropies, and Lumina Foundation for Education) sponsored a project to recognize colleges and universities as "Institutions of Excellence" in their design and execution of the first year. Thirteen colleges and universities—representing a broad spectrum of campus types—were selected as exceptional institutions that place a high priority on the first-year experience. Achieving and Sustaining Excellence in the First Year of College includes case studies of each of the thirteen exemplary institutions. These studies illustrate and analyze the colleges’ best practices in teaching, assessing, and retaining first-year college students. The individual case studies offer lessons learned and have broad potential application beyond the particular type of institution represented.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2006-05-17

One of the greatest origin comics of our time. If you haven't been shut-in you entire adolescent life, in one way or another, you will be able to relate to one or more of these characters and totally get where they're coming from. That and super powers combined, make for a mighty fine read.

3 out of 5 stars Tired of grit, angst and Wolverine in your comics? Try this..........2006-05-13

This book is fun. It's not over the top slapstick humor or full of witty conversations, but it is pretty fun. It's really well drawn by Leonard Kirk, who I remember from his great run on Peter David's Supergirl, and is written by Hugh Sterbakov, who I never heard of. Hugh mentions in his afterword that co-creator Seth Green is his best pal...so I think we all know how he broke into the field. The book is labelled Volume 1, but the story has a real ending and sequels, although welcome, aren't needed to enjoy the book.

The story: You've got a bunch of stereotypical college freshmen (except for the Amish guy and the beaver) (yeah, I just wrote the line "Amish guy and the beaver" in a review) who find themselves living in the school's science building due to a dorm shortage (except for the beaver - he is there for another reason).

When a science experiment on another floor misfires, the freshmen, and the aforementioned beaver, are all given super-powers related to whatever was on their mind at the instant of the misfire. It works out pretty well for the chick who was wondering how to get into other people's heads. But not so well for the guy looking at a squirrel or the guy who was measuring his, um, well, ahem, let's just call it his 'shortcoming'.

Anyhow, they all get drawn into a plot involving some bad guys and in the process turn into a super-hero team led by an uber-comic-book-geek who ironically happened to be out of the dorm at that critical moment when the others gained their powers.

The book collects the complete six issue miniseries, some art in progress pages, alternate covers, some pinups, introductions by Seth and Hugh, character bios and a short prose wrap-up story.

I don't think I'd give this book to anyone under the age of 14 or so since it does involve frank depictions of college age topics like sex and drinking. But for the super-hero fan looking for something lighthearted it's a good read and it is completely accesible to those who don't read other comics.

"These students were natural, uninhibited, full of the joy of life, yet were mannerly and exhibited respect for authority. I can say that I wish all traveling Americans could be as charming and as good ambassadors as your group!"-From a former dean of freshmen at Dartmouth College in a letter to our headmaster after visiting the Hotel de L'Atelier in Villeneuve

. To read about and see photos of the ancient Pont du Gard in a history book is one thing, but to study it one morning and the same afternoon go racing across the top or through the aqueduct and marvel at the skill of the Romans 2000 years ago is quite another. Well, that's precisely what we did in 1970.

The Camargue, a marshy delta on the Mediterranean at the mouth of the Rhône River, is a huge regional park and bird paradise with wild horses and bulls and sandy beaches. I had read and heard about this area, but never had occasion to visit. It seemed like the perfect time because there was an annual event in Saintes Maries de la Mer where gypsy people meet for the ritual of carrying a statue of Ste. Marie into the ocean to be blessed.

        5 out of 5 stars A Successful Educational Experiment.......2007-09-17

If you'd like to read about a trip to France with very young students some thirty-seven years ago, this is the book for you. Gerry Ashley's ninth graders are eager to explore the world and experience a different culture on an extended basis. The book details the planning and execution of this brave venture, highlighting the imaginative ways Ms. Ashley immersed her students in the life of a village in Provence. The book demonstrates clearly the lasting impact of foreign study on the lives of these students: it's appealing to any reader and could be very useful to language teachers planning their own ventures.

5 out of 5 stars To France, With Teenagers.......2007-07-14

Surely the ideal way to see a country is to spend several months doing it. No 48-hour galloping survey of churches and museums enlightens or enchants anyone, not in the long term. (Or the short one either, for that matter.). American teacher of French Gerry Ashley and her students - eight high school Freshmen - made the time to do it right in 1970. Ashley had the wit to plan an eight-month experience - the entire school year - that all agree, 37 years later, was hugely successful, both educationally and developmentally. Because she and her husband had lived in France as very young newlyweds Ashley knew where to go and what was fun and what was boring. She guided her students as they used and enhanced their knowledge of French, participated in (and learned to appreciate) French culture, history and cuisine, tramped through well- and not so well-known historical sites, visited with the natives with whom they talked (and talked), and benefitted hugely from a once-in-a-lifetime adventure memorialized by hundreds of snapshots, many of which appear in this amazing book.
The mind wobbles at the audacity of Ashley's vision. Her memoir of the trip captures this audicity but remains unfailingly modest, thorough, and wise. She never takes the credit but spreads it generously to include everybody - the school administration, the parents, her family, the French people encountered along the way and especially her students. As you read what she has written you appreciate not only her good sense and skill in recapturing a deeply layered experience, but you end up wishing that all teachers - even without this magical trip to offer - were as devoted and as imaginative as the writer of this wonderful book.

        5 out of 5 stars A year to remember..........2007-06-20

and a book to read! This author/teacher takes the reader on an adventure that is hard to imagine today -- traveling in France with eight teenagers, for a year! She tells the story of the year they spent in and around Provence in 1970. If you are considering travel, with or without children, in that part of the world, it is well worth a read. And if you are a teacher, it is a must read! Ashley is a model all teachers should look up to! Bravo to her for taking the adventure, and for sharing the story!

5 out of 5 stars Just like traveling with them............2007-06-05

This is a gem of a book. Back in the early 1970s, an adventurous French teacher decided to take a small collection of American students -- just high school freshmen -- to Avignon with her for a year. They essentially rented out a B&B and a wild blue VW Bus for the duration, and spent their time studying math and English, practicing their French wherever they went, and using their B&B as a base of operations for journeys all across Southern Europe.
The author's perspective is deliciously warm. Each child comes to life. Each stage of the journey has a rounded, three-dimensional quality. It is clear just how much she and the others are improvising -- intent on making this a year to remember, and a year to treasure.
I bought this sight unseen and, as soon as I finished reading, I shared it with the World Language Chair at my school. A warm, inspiringly upbeat read.....and an example for how more overseas programs might be designed....
