5 out of 5 stars Excellent Strategic Advice.......2002-07-31

While there may have been some typos, I found that this book offered excellent advice on test-taking strategy that was not present in other review books. I found the verbal section particularly helpful. Another reviewer states that the practice questions are easier than other review books. This may be true but I scored higher on the actual GMAT than I did on any of the practice tests that I took from this book. Also, for the first time in my life I actually scored higher on verbal than math on a standardized test. (BTW, I can't help bragging; I scored a 750 on the GMAT and recently completed my MBA at Duke.)

5 out of 5 stars Great book at a great price!!!.......2001-07-04

This GMAT books is much better than the Kaplan's GMAT book. Although the Kaplan CD-ROM is better, the printed material is better organized and you get better tips and advise. I recommend you to get this book, so you can review the areas you need. If you are looking for a fancy CD-ROM and Multimedia, this is not the book, but if you are lloking for those tips that will make you suceed in the GMAT, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Better than average GMAT review.......2001-05-06

This book gave a better math review than most of the other books. Still didnt score as well as I would have hoped as the questions I saw on my GMAT were unlike most of the practice questions I looked at. However, it is a good place to start as it reviews concepts that I saw on some of the practice tests that I was unaware of.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Easy.......2000-12-04

I just started studying for the GMAT a couple of weeks ago, and this was the fourth book I went through. This one had the easiest practice tests (compared to Princeton Review, the other Arco book and Barron's). The appendices provided a good, if somewhat skimpy review of math and grammar, and the math explanations were very easy to follow. I agree with everyone else who posted that there were a lot of typos, which were extremely annoying/frustrating, especially since I was trying to time myself. This book was also weak in providing explanations for answers to the verbal questions. Overall, I would recommend it but also warn that it should not be the sole source of anyone's GMAT review.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2000-02-07

I took the GMAT in 1995 to get into the MBA program at the University of Memphis and scored a 560, which was high enough to get accepted, but not outstanding. However, last year (1999) I decided to enter the Ph.D. program and my 560 just wasn't good enough. I needed a 600+ to even be considered.

The first time I took the test, I got the "Official Guide to the GMAT" by Educational Testing Service (ETS). They had some sample tests and some "no-brainer" pointers, but insisted that "you really couldn't study for this test". I didn't understand WHY, but was gullible enough to believe them. I didn't study very hard and only for about a week.

Since I had more riding on the the GMAT this time (both acceptance into the program and a graduate assistanceship) I decided to take it a bit more seriously...

First, I got "The Unofficial Guide to the GMAT" (1999 version) because it had the best synopsis and sounded like it would give me some TESTED pointers and tips.

Second, because of the time pressure to get the test done, I put aside two weeks of moderately intensive study (2-3 hours a day).

Third, I did MUCH better on the exam... a 640! :)

There are five very nice things about the "Unofficial Guide". First, you take a test to get a "baseline" score to work from (mine was a 580, without studying). Second, it prioritizes the information so that you will get the most for your effort. Third, it doesn't give you a bunch of "foo-foo dust" or "Duh! Tell me something I didn't already know" tips and tricks, but rather provides you with information that WORKS! Fourth, all of the information is well presented and organized so you can find the information related to what you need to improve on. Fifth, the information works for course exams also! :)

My only regret in taking it this last time is that I didn't spend the 2-3 months they recommended. I FIRMLY believe I could have achieved a 700+. After all, it is just like learning anything else and the "Unofficial Guide" tells you what you need to know...

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece............2006-06-10

Alexander Theroux's Darconville's Cat is, thus far, his magnum opus. This novel is one of the finest pieces of literature in existence.....it should be at the top of every required reading list. The love story is riveting, Theroux's vocabulary is awe-inspiring, and his attention to the details, complexities, and subtle nuances of heartbreak is endearing. It was difficult to come to terms with the fact that there was going to be a last page. One wishes that Theroux could just go on and on, as he is a master storyteller.....clever, sensual, thoughtful, inventive, mischievous, and a touch macabre. Please read this novel.....it will end up being the standard by which one will judge all others.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2006-04-22

I strongly suspect that Professor Theroux somewhere along the way made a Faustian trade with Mephistopheles and was willing to part with the love of his life in exchange for writing the perfect great American novel right at the get-go. Of the latter I can certainly vouche. The former could not have been accomplished without some deep seated experience. After all, this is a novel about love and hate. But it also concerns poles of every variety. As Nietzsche pointed out in "The Birth of Tragedy," the interplay of Appollo and Dionysius give birth to tragedy and fortunately for us in this case also to comedy. "The Trojan Horse has foaled." For in this Proustian synthesis of Theroux, genius clearly resides. Saul Bellow once wrote that fewer than 20,000 people had the intellectual wherewithal to really understand his novels. I suspect that in the case of Theroux the number is roughly half. Hence, booksellers consider this work an "overlooked masterpiece." The vocabulary is fairly daunting --the longest word in the world can be found within this magnum opus. But the pure wit and the rare sagacity and the beauty of the language is absolute paradise: this is one of only a half-dozen novels that I envy to the point that I wish I had written it. This is a novelist's novel. "You will either build a bridge or build a wall." In some cases the rich syntax rivals Proust in length and in other cases it's simply pithy wit. Theroux captures the dialect of the South deftly in his Blue Ridge Faux Eden and then revels in his own element East of Eden in the Hahvid Yahd. There are many places where I just laughed my head off. His primary cast -- Darconville, Isabel and Crucifer -- are memorable and the vitriolic diatribes of the wicked Crucifer must have been good fun to write. Crucifer out-Mephistos Mephistopheles as a worthy arch-demon as purely Satanic as any demon of Milton, Faust or Dante. This Crucifer is Biblical and leads Darconville on a tragi-comic chase through the labyrinth of his soul with an ending that is both original and intriguing in its wisdom. Thus Theroux prophesized his own manuscript going into a tin box to be confiscated by a Philistine doctor to offset his fees. This book takes a while to read properly -- I would advise you not to rush it. The writing is exquisite -- really it's as good as it gets in our day and age -- so just be sure to savour it. I also recommend that you buy this book as an investment: someday soon this genius will be "discovered" as an overnight success a mere 30 years in the making and his first editions will be worth great fortunes. "Darconville's Cat" is a pure joy to read -- it is, honestly, simply perfect.

4 out of 5 stars A little too melodramatic for my taste.......2006-04-19

I liked the rich, 19th century writing style and the fact that it made me reach for my unabridged dictionary every few minutes. Though the fact that 1/3 of the words weren't even in the dictionary and I had to end up researching them online got a bit tedious.

Overall it was a fine book, but I didn't really connect to the story, at least as far as Darconville was concerned. He seemed over the top and predisposed to emotional extremes. I would urge people to read this book if they are interested in exploring what happens to a man who lets basic emotions rule his life.

5 out of 5 stars "Silence [is] the unbearable repartee.".......2005-04-21

If you do a web search on Alexander Theroux, you won't find much of substance (other than Steven Moore's interview), but you will find the quote I used, because, like all quotes trimmed of the excess fat of context, it shimmers - like raised gold lettering - momentarily arresting the consumer's eyes as they scan the brain candyshop window on a day s/he has decided to splurge and "treat themselves" to a piece of edification.

Theroux comes from a family of writer siblings, of which he is the eldest (His brother Peter has translated the Cities of Salt trilogy from the Arabic of Abdelrahman Munif). In true Corvine form (see, and read, Hadrian VII), he is an arch-curmudgeon - seldom leashing his razor-edged tongue which, after flaying his target, typically recoils and takes his nose off (he's lost jobs, the warm and fuzzy ambience typical of family reunions and some - but not I - would argue, any chance of major publication as a result). The Corvo comparison ends there. Though he also shares Rolfe's penchant for intricate phrasing and wild hybrid/archaisms, Theroux is a writer in the a more authentic, Joycean sense. Corvo was more an autodidact and whose "calling" had its source in a monstrous ego that intuited and constantly inveighed against its insubstantiality

Theroux is, I think, a believing Catholic - but more so a faithful individual - singular, in love with literature and a living incarnation of the English language. No one alive (no one since Joyce or Beckett) writes as he does. He spent time in a Trappist monastery. He was a monk of academia: his doctoral thesis is a several hundred paged monster on the language of Samuel Beckett. He is in that line of intellectual-artistic priesthood that began more or less with Augustine and passed on through Dante, ..., Flaubert,... Joyce and otherwise terminated with Beckett. I say priesthood, because to those named writing was not a way to make a living or to sing the same old blues, but a moral obligation, something one is compelled or called upon to do. As I said, no one writes like Alexander Theroux today. And this is why he is unread. In doing it his way, he sins against canned sensibility and entrenched homogeneity. Publishers are aware of, cultivate (because it keeps their bland bread buttered) and share our attenuated attention spans and our immeasurable vanity. We want to feel intelligent, but we want adventure, something shiny, mainly - and certainly no more that 300 pages, tops (thank you Dan Brown!). When something like Darconville's Cat appears - it is as though a person emerged out of the 19th century into our broad-daylight, in full-period garb, and education. While a curious spectacle, books like Darconville's Cat are daunting and not likely to fit in to our fast-paced, "multi-tasking", non-reflective environment. So 6 months after a not exactly heavily marketed publication, this book is a remaindered item, and its author remains uncelebrated genius moldering away in the stingy wastes of Cape Cod.

In my opinion (and Anthony Burgess's), it is one of the greatest novels of the 20th century - it contains multitudes. It is a story of love, obsession and revenge - and it is a story and celebration of the life of the English language - all styles of writing and demotic species are incorporated in its vast body (I speak of the book at its near Proustian bulk, and of the language). And, it is as funny as anything you'll ever read in your life - I swear to God.

And besides, reading should accomplish a moral obligation, a promiscuous (at least in my case - judge for yourselves, whoever the hell you are) fabrication of the soul (no, we're not hatched outfitted with them, like little appendices or supernatural colostomy bags - but with opinions and beliefs and those tailored to our size). The soul is the boutonniere of our nothingness, the fiction we were born to write, we costive scribblers. It is a matter of choosing our words rather than hosting them. Here you may luxuriate in them - and be sure: only dandies get to heaven.

Now where the devil is Laura Warholic?

    3 out of 5 stars I wouldn't call it entertaining..........2003-07-01

I felt compelled to review this book since all the other reviews gave this book five stars. The book is creative, unique, interesting, and insightful - but I wouldn't describe it as entertaining. There are multiple chapters that are just lists - maybe clever or significant, but it gets rather dull reading through a list so after a while I started skimming very rapidly through such chapters. There are also entire chapters devoted to one character's dialogue, usually in the form some kind of philosophizing speech. In some such chapters there were compelling ideas and well crafted lines, but once again, there was too much sheer text, without conflict or a direct relationship to the plot, to describe the chapter as a whole as entertaining. Overall, I think I would have enjoyed Darconville's Cat much more were it 307 pages, not 703.

    4 out of 5 stars A fun book about a serious topic.......2002-01-14

This is a great book for young children about drugs, risk-taking and peer pressure. Slippery Slick is "cat" who appears again and again to Clever Kitten, offering all sorts of temptations, from pills from the medicine cabinet to hypodermic needles. But Clever Kitten knows how to answer him every time. The refrain ("No way, Slippery Slick! No Way!"), is very catchy, and children will quickly catch on and join in. The illustrations are colourful and eye-catching. A fun way to touch on a serious topic.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book, perfectly complements the official guide.......2000-08-12

This book offers some valuable tips and suggestions especially for cracking math. But overall it focuses more on the "Joe Blogg" tips and tricks approach, which may work for some people and not for others. I still believe knowing sincerely how to solve problems will get you far. But the PR book makes for an interesting read, gives you some excellent strategies (e.g., about the essay sections etc) and does the best job of introducing the concept of "difficulty level bins" -- which is how the CAT works. For those about to take the GMAT, some tips:

    1. Definitely get yourself the 'Official Guide' (published by ETS) -- that is indespensable. You should aim to complete it from cover to cover - it gives you a really good idea of the test questions though the math is a liitle easier than what I saw on the test. It even has a comprehensive, complete list of essay topics. I worked with the 10th edition, the latest possible edition would be a good buy lest you should miss out on some novel nuances.

    2. Practice tests -- my scores in Powerprep : 780,770; Kaplan : 670,650,690; Princeton : 750,720. So I'd venture to recommend this book to get a decent estimation of where you really stand, and therefore u must take the included tests seriously -- i.e., emulating the real testing conditions -- in order to get an accurate idea of your potential. Kaplan is really tough - I haven't seen too many folks scoring above 700 in thier tests - infact when i gave the first test straight after a 780 in powerprep and got a 650 I was pretty turned off - but later found out that it wasn't really a big deal. Get Kaplan for practice, but the PR and the official guide should be enough.

    3. PREP MATERIAL: Well other than the Official guide, I used PR and Kaplan. I found the math tips in Kaplan (50 of them) quite impressive but the practice tests in PR give you a very good idea of difficulty levels of math/analytic because it lays out the test in "bins" (easy bin, medium bin, and the tough bin). I found this to be a very unique and useful feature.

All in all, this is a handy book for its purpose and complements the ETS OG fabulously. Recommended, if you are looking for more than one book.

5 out of 5 stars Almost all what you need.......2000-07-27

This is an excelent material. Get this book, and buy another pack of practice tests from the web (plenty of them around) and you're all set. Just keep in mind that you need to have solid bases to benefit from this book and other practice tests; Nobody and nothing will teach you probability, algebra, grammar, etc... in a month. The author has a good sense of humor, which makes this book more readable and not so boring in such the painful task of studying for GMAT. Only drawback is that quantitative section problems in the real one are more difficult (better say, more time consuming) than the ones that come in ANY practice test. Always keep in mind that this is an ADAPTIVE test when studying, so, create your strategy for how much time to spend on the first 10-15 questions of each section.

3 out of 5 stars Good Overall but CD test questions repeated..........2000-04-12

The review provided by this book and CD are adequate, but notoutstanding. A lot of time is spent teaching test-taking tricks, which is time and paper that could have been better spent withadditional examples.

I studied on and off from this book for about 4 days, and completed 2 test sub-sections and 2 other complete tests from the CD that comes with the book. On each of the complete tests, my score was exactly the same -- 730. I just sat for the actual GMAT exam this morning and scored a 660. I took the GMAT (paper version) a little over 5 years ago (and about 1 yr out of undergrad) and scored a 690 with little more than a day or two preparation.

Did this prep material really do anything for me? You make the call.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but not enough info for in-depth prep.......2000-04-05

I have a business preparing people for the GMAT and I *never* use this book. Most of our students need much more than this book has to offer. Basically, Princeton Review does not give you all the information they have because they want you to take their course. As they say, people sign up for the course just to get the books!

This book will show you what to expect on the GMAT, but it won't clear up any of the serious problems you may have. For example, if you are scoring pretty high in the math, like 80% or so, you will need to focus on more difficult questions and this book does not have enough of them.

All of their sentence correction problems also neatly fall into their categories, but, alas, these are not the questions that most people have problems with, it is the tricky questions that people have a hard time with.

The software is so-so. It's better than the Peterson's (almost everything is), but not as good as the Kaplan. The best, of course, is the official PowerPrep software. I have had many problems with students getting over 600 on the Princeton Review software, but getting 100 or 200 points less on the real test!

In short, you should buy a good test prep book to use along with the official GMAT review. There is no one book that will give you everything you need.

5 out of 5 stars This book works miracles!.......2000-03-01

I used this book in conjunction with the "Official Guide for GMAT Review" by ETS. This book teaches great techniques for the GMAT. The "Official Guide" is really only good for the practice problems.

Using both of them really helped. I scored a 760!

      Book Description

Beth is an impoverished student at St Nectan's College, Oxford. When Dr Milton recruits her to an exclusive club for submissives and pony-girls, Beth's independent spirit soon gets her into trouble. Charlotte wants her last year to be a memorable one. Lizzie wants Dr Milton all to herself. Beth just wants to pay the rent. Pony races, perverted parties, and Victorian pornography combine to give these college girls a thoroughly indecent education.

This photographer captures the individual characters of each of the Cambridge College cats perfectly (or should that be purr-fectly?) - this is a beautiful and amusing collection of black and white photographs of the favourite felines of Cambridge (and Oxford) students throughout recent years.
