Book Description

Gripping accounts of all known fatal mishaps in the most famous of the World's Seven Natural Wonders.

Two veterans of decades of adventuring in Grand Canyon chronicle the first complete and comprehensive history of Canyon misadventures. These episodes span the entire era of visitation from the time of the first river exploration by John Wesley Powell and his crew of 1869 to that of tourists falling off its rims in Y2K.

These accounts of the 550 people who have met untimely deaths in the Canyon set a new high water mark for offering the most astounding array of adventures, misadventures, and life saving lessons published between any two covers. Over the Edge promises to be the most intense yet informative book on Grand Canyon ever written.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Study of Human Behavior.......2007-09-17

While the topic of this book might seem morbid, it really is a fascinating and instructive set of essays on human behavior. Well-researched and engaging, this revised and updated edition recounts stories of what most often amount to tragic tales of sheer human stupidity.

What really resonates most strongly is the authors' desire to communicate that the Grand Canyon is not some man-made, man-controlled theme park, but instead a heartbreakingly beautiful and very dangerous natural phenomenon, to be treated with reverence and caution.

The final chapter on murder reads like a historical thriller, unearthing mysteries that have been embedded in the canyon for over a hundred years. But the authors never rely on sensationalism. Instead, they share eyewitness accounts and solid research that reveal many secrets of the canyon, only to show that there are many more buried below.

5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down.......2007-08-24

When I was at the Grand Canyon a year ago I saw this book in a gift shop, at the hotel. I thought, "Na...too morbid". I am now planning on hiking down with a friend later next year and I got this book along with several "how to" guides for hiking in the GC. Both authors are experienced witnesses of the many accounts that are cited. I am not finished with the book yet but Ghiglieri works at a local medical clinic and has seen many emergencies, while Myers is an experienced boatman and river guide. A great read and essential for trip knowledge before you set out on your next hike!

5 out of 5 stars Grand Graveyard!.......2007-08-20

Despite the title, "Death in Grand Canyon", this book by Ghiglieri and Myers is neither gory nor macabre. It is a fascinating account of the truly idiotic, careless, unprepared, and misguided (figuratively and literally) people who over the past hundred years or so have met their maker in the Grand Canyon by various means including:
falling, jumping, hiking, swimming, boating and flying over and in the Grand Canyon.
Their are some truly interesting stories of survival mixed in with the hundreds of deaths documented over the years. It is enjoyable, easy reading.
Kudos to the National Park Service rangers who have to put their lives on the line to try to rescue the unfortunate victims and to Ghiglieri and Myers for a great book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but got old.......2007-08-04

I stopped reading it about half way through as I just thought the stories of death were poorly organized, and the writing didn't seem to flow well for me, I started to find it boring. However, I did find it interesting to see how people died and found that by far and away it was people who weren't respecting the danger of the canyon. I took that to heart when I hiked to the bottom of the canyon about a year after reading the book. BTW: hiking the canyon was one of the greatest experiences of my life! And I didn't die.

4 out of 5 stars Warning.......2007-07-26

We have a trip planned to hike into the canyon. I wanted everyone to be aware of the dangers and I think this book does a good job of presenting those dangers. I'll write more later...if we make it out!

4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-08-15

First of all, the guide is design for people who want to travel across the Arizona. Only 55 out of 463 pages was dedicated to the Grand Canyon, which was my main destination. However, I found the GC chapter very helpful with planning my stay. It describes everything you need to know without unnecessary dragging. It covers not only important topics such a accommodation and restaurants but also helps you to get the most out of your stay depending on how many days you have. It briefly describes the hiking trails on all three rims and gives a very good tourist related tips. The book doesn't mention the glass platform over the Canyon on West Rim called Skywalk, probably because the opening of the platform took place in March this year. To sum up, buying the Fodors Guide was a good choice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Trail Map of the Grand Canyon.......2007-07-29

I like this trail map. It's much better than National Geographic Road Guide to Grand Canyon National Park (NG Road Guides). This map is easier to read. There is a wealth of information on this map; it's almost a mini-guidebook.

What I like the best about the cartography it Kent Schulte's approach to 3D topo maps. Instead toe usual approach of using shading to light and shadow as if the sun were shining obliquely across the landscape, in this map they use shading to indicate elevation. In terrain as rugged as the Grand Canyon, this approach works better.

5 out of 5 stars a great hiking map.......2007-06-10

This turned out to be a very useful map for planning our trip. I couldn't have asked for anything better, and so colorful and durable too.

4 out of 5 stars Best map available.......2007-05-14

This map is a great guide for hiking on the primitive trails or routes. The only problem I found with it is that it shows 6.0 miles from the North Rim to Cottonwood via the Old Bright Angel route, but it is actually 9 miles.

5 out of 5 stars Very Detailed Map.......2007-04-06

This map has about every feature a map could have; well... everything I could ask for. It covers everything from trail mileage between landmarks, trail difficulty, springs, backcountry use areas, plus all of the usual thing on a map. This map along with a detailed guide book, you could plan any kind of trip you want in the Grand Canyon.

I'm backpacking in the Grand Canyon for 4 days this summer and this map is all I'm going to carry with me; I'm leaving my book at home because I won't need it. I've done a lot of backpacking and this is one of the nicest maps I have.

5 out of 5 stars The best Grand Canyon topo map available.......2007-03-27

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll start by saying that I sell this map. The reason I sell it, though, is because of its high quality. I searched for the best GC trail map to put on my web site and this is the one I came up with. I was expecting National Geographics Trails Illustrated map to be the best (typically their maps are superb) but their GC map is really lacking.

Kent Schulte's map is easy to read, lists mileage distances on the more commmonly used trails and lists other important information such as perennial water sources, contact information for obtaining a backcountry permit, etc.

It might be clumsy and big, but so were my numerous expeditions into the mighty Grand Canyon. For all who have seen the G.C. firsthand, the "coined" phrase is: "Pictures don't do it Justice." Which is absolutely true. However, this is the only book I have found that comes fractionally close to relating the G.C.'s awesome scale & vistas! It makes a perfect book for the cocktail table. This is the "creme de la creme" of G.C. Pictorial books. Get it! You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Grand Canyon Trail Book That I've Found.......2007-07-29

I'm planning a backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon. I've looked at several guidebooks and I've bought bought this book as well as Hiking Grand Canyon National Park, 2nd (Regional Hiking Series) by John Annerino, and Hiking the Grand Canyon's Geology (Hiking Geology) (HTGCG) by Lon Abbott and Teri Cook.

I liked the straightforward and informative approach that Ron Adkinson takes in this book. The Grand Canyon is a big place with a lot of alternatives for trips. I was able figure out which trails I want to take using this book.

I especially like the capsule summary of each route that have clear ratings for the difficulty, water availability, average hiking times, suggested cache points, and distance.

Compared to this book, I found the HTGCG by Lon Abbott and Teri Cook nearly as good but the focus on the geology in HTGCG makes it harder to pull out the hiking information. Though, once your route is chosen, HTGCG, helps you understand what you see.

5 out of 5 stars very good book.......2007-03-03

I reviewed several other hiking books on the Grand Canyon and read the trail guides for my selected and reserved trail. This book was the best written and most complete. I would generally say that this book might be the best bet for a good hiking volume for the GC.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Grand Canyon Hiking Guide!.......2006-08-08

I have been hiking Grand Canyon since 1977 with over 9,000 miles below the rim and have hiked all the trails in this guide, in most cases multiple times. This guide has the most detailed descriptions of all canyon hiking guides; maps are more than adequate; nearly all information is up to date. Adkison's writing style is very clear. I especially appreciate his information about plant communities along the routes. This second edition is largely the same as the earlier edition. I am glad to see the addition of a section on cairns. How can this book be improved? Add an index. Looking through the guide I only found a few errors --- Western Union is no longer available inside the park and the Tanner Trail one way distance is not 7 miles but more like 10 miles!

5 out of 5 stars A "Tortoise" Hikes the Grand Canyon.......2006-03-19

While writing my book "The Tortoise Diet - Win The Race To Lose!", an account of my 120 pound weight loss, I bought this book an became interested in hiking in the canyon as a fitness goal. This very informative and well written book helped inspire me to hike in 2005 from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch, and back again the next day. This May (2006) my husband and I are hiking from the South Rim to the North Rim. We will be carrying along our copy of the book to help us appreciate the canyon more as we undertake this huge fitness challenge(my husband is 55 and I am 49.)

An absolute must for a raft trip down the river. The book provides some worthwhile facts, photos and images to provide even the youngest traveler with a certain base of information prior to making the trip.

The waterproof pages make the book even more useful, as I witnessed a number of people reviewing it throughout the day on the river without concern for damage.

Outstanding and essential guide for running the rapids and for general information about the Grand Canyon from the Colorado River perspective. Good geology, history, and river map information

5 out of 5 stars Read when wet.......2006-11-06

This was the perfect map to take on a river rafting trip down the Grand Canyon. It had a map of every mile of the canyon, with locations of the rapids, side canyons, points of interest, and essays on the history, the lives of canyon characters, the regional anthropology, the plant and animal life, the geology, and a guide to photography. Very appropriately the guide is sturdy and waterproof.

5 out of 5 stars Don`t leave Lee`s Ferry without it........2005-09-12

Provides an excellent sequence of maps useful to people running the river plus considerable background info on notable past river runners. Published on water resistant material. Very useful!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2007-09-13

I bought this as a present for my wife. We had just returned from a trip that included a visit to the Grand Canyon, and I wanted to get her a memento of the visit. This book sounded good, but was not the one that included the beautiful vistas that we wanted. There are some photos too dark to really discern why they are included. There are some photos of a boat on the bank of the river. That could be from anywhere.
Although I suppose others may find it interesting, we didn't want a book of prose, we just wanted amazing photos. This was not that book.

5 out of 5 stars The finest Grand Canyon book at the lowest price...........2007-02-15

This book is so awesome, and of such high quality, that its Amazon price seems surreal...I have two copies and am ordering a third, for posterity or whatever.

Intensely beautiful photographic prints, at the very leading edge of Canyon photos....almost beyond description!

If you buy one copy of this book, you'll then want another for a gift, and another for your own collection.....etc.

5 out of 5 stars off the charts superb stunning startling good heavens.......2006-11-03

Yes, you would expect truly astounding photography here, and you get exactly that, in lots of different flavors too, but the stories are deft and revealing -- far more than in a book of photos alone of a place that you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. Trimble himself is a master craftsman with the camera, but his service here is to gather some really remarkable work and voices into a tome that anyone who has gaped and prayed there will want to paw through before you get major brownie points for giving it to someone else. Terrific work.

5 out of 5 stars Review by Jennifer Owings Dewey, author/illustrator.......2006-09-28

Lasting Light is a treasure, a compilation of photographs taken of the Crand Ganyon over a broad stretch of time. The viewer/reader may gain a sense of history, passing from the old to the new. The book is an experience in images of the vast wonder of the Canyon and the smallest, most discreet detail. Because the text is direct and not-technical, anyone interested in what is grand and lit by extraordinary light, the Grand Canyon itself, will find this work a delight.

5 out of 5 stars A superb choice as a Memorial Fund acquisition for any library system.......2006-07-10

Lasting Light: 125 Years Of Grand Canyon Photography by award-winning author and photographer Stephen Trimble is a visual celebration and documentation of the beauty and grandeur of one of the most photographed subjects on earth -- the Grand Canyon. Comprised of the best of 125 years of great photographs beginning with the pioneering glass plate negatives of the 19th century to the digital images of the 21st century, Lasting Light produces spectacular visuals enhanced with an accompanying text of fascinating details regarding the advances of photography, stories of various individual photographers, and the relationship between the photographers and the unique American icon that is the Grand Canyon. As a coffetable art book, Lasting Light is a simply wonderful contribution to any personal, academic, or community library photography reference collection and would make a superb choice as a Memorial Fund acquisition for any library system.

This guidebook has everything: maps, hotels and categories for everything a traveler needs. Unfortunately these guides no longer have titles like "The Grand Canyon on $5 a day."

5 out of 5 stars awesome guide.......2007-02-23

Perfect guide. Great reccomendations. I spent 6 days on both the north and south rims( I thought the north rim was so much better) and the book was helpful for both. it also contains info on places in northern Arizona. There is plenty of info, it is very detailed and descriptive. The size is small and can fit in a bag or a pocket. Great choice!!

5 out of 5 stars The best guide to the Grand Canyon.......2007-01-15

Wow this book was great! We recently used the book as our resource during our visit to the canyon. A few price listings were slightly off (by $1-$3) but this book gave us more information than anything available at the park. The information on different viewpoints (geographical points on the rim of the canyon) was wonderful and we knew more than anyone around us about what we were seeing.

The restaurant information was right on the nose, and the wildlife information was so accurate that by following the books information we were able to see and photograph a bighorn sheep!

This is the only guidebook you need to visit the Grand Canyon.

The Complete Guide to the Grand Canyon by Destination Press really covers all aspects of the Park. I found the guide very "useable" as it brings you through the trails easily. There is no confusion about how to hike the canyon. The photos are spectacular as is the writing. A must for either the serious hiker/trekker or the casual visitor.

The Grand Canyon is an overwhelming place, vast in size, depth, beauty, and appreciative hordes. Alex Wells is passionate about the Canyon, and along with a wealth of useful information, he imparts his ardor for the 277-mile park, from the smallest ant lion to the impressive half ton elk. He details the best drives, views, and bike rides, where to watch for wildlife and whom to contact for raft trips, the best places to lodge, dine, picnic, and camp, how to get there, when to go, and what's available for visitors with disabilities, pets, or children. From South Rim to North Rim, getaway towns to backcountry trips, Wells covers camping, sports, the flora, fauna, and ecosystem comprehensively and clearly. Wells's guide gives perspective on the magnificence, delineates the options, and provides a handle on just what kind of visit you'd like to arrange, whether it's a quick rim view, a day hike, or a wilderness backpacking excursion. --Stephanie Gold
