Book Description

One hundred political cartoons you wanted to see, but weren't allowed to: all were banned for being too hot to handle.

Think you live in a society with a free press? These celebrated cartoonists and illustrators found out otherwise. Whether blasting Bush for his "Bring 'em on!" speech, spanking pedophile priests, questioning capital punishment, debating the disputed 2000 election, or just mocking baseball mascots, they learned that newspapers and magazines increasingly play it safe by suppressing satire.

With censored cartoons, many unpublished, by the likes of Garry Trudeau, Doug Marlette, Paul Conrad, Mike Luckovich, Matt Davies, and Ted Rall (all Pulitzer Prize winners or finalists), as well as unearthed editorial illustrations by Norman Rockwell, Edward Sorel, Anita Kunz, Marshall Arisman, and Steve Brodner, you will find yourself surprised and often shocked by the images themselves—and outraged by the fact that a fearful editor kept you from seeing them. Needed now more than ever because of a neutered press that's more lapdog than watchdog, Killed Cartoons will make you laugh, make you angry, and make you think. 100 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Antidote to editorial timidity .......2007-05-30

If you're disheartened by pusillanimous publishers who lack the sand to back up their writers and cartoonists when they come up with controversial material, David Wallis is your man. In his previous work, "Killed: Great Journalism Too Hot To Print," he championed journalists whose articles were decommissioned by their fearful overseers; now in KILLED CARTOONS he's back with a book that does the same for editorial cartoonists. Clever, thoughtful, and brave.

4 out of 5 stars Kartoons that did not see print.......2007-05-13

What a shame these weren't printed. All were to the point, and pertinant.

2 out of 5 stars Wrong choice.......2007-05-13

The Book was good enough it just wasnt quit what I was looking foward to

5 out of 5 stars Funny, but you don't want to laugh.......2007-04-28

I enjoyed KILLED CARTOONS immensely. The work illustrates beautifully why political cartoons are important. (And why they're capable of generating real controversy.) What Wallis understands is that cartoons have a contradictory function. One the one hand they have to amuse the reader, and on the other, they have to upset his/her equilibrium--ideally to the boiling point. Cartoons reach us on a visceral level, which is why I found Wallis' commentary (captions, if you will) a perfect complement to them. Wallis is a witty intelligent and apparently well-informed writer. This book came to me as a gift, I just bought his KILLED: Journalism To Hot to Print, with my own money.

2 out of 5 stars Understand what you're getting.......2007-04-21

For the right audience, I'm sure this is a fine work. I was not the right audience. I wanted a book that presented the cartoons, with perhaps minimal commentary, and let me decide for myself. Instead, this provides pages of commentary and, actually, very few cartoons (94 in its 282 pages - I counted). If you're looking for a treatise on the myth of freedom of the press, using a few cartoons as case studies, then by all means look at this book. Just know what it is you are buying, and know that less than a third of the pages in the book actually show the "Killed Cartoons" that the title promises.

Book Description

Each week about fifty New Yorker cartoonists submit ten ideas, yielding five hundred cartoons for no more than twenty spots in the magazine. Arguably the most brilliant single-panel-gag cartoonists in the world create a bunch of cartoons every week that never see the light of day.

These rejects were piling up in the dusty corners of studios all over the country. Sam Gross, who has been contributing since 1962, has more than 12,000 rejected cartoons. (Seriously. He's been numbering every single cartoon he's ever submitted to The New Yorker since the very beginning.) Enter editor Matthew Diffee. He tapped his fellow cartoonists, asking them to rescue these hilarious lost gems. From the artists' stacks of all-time favorite rejects, Diffee handpicked the standouts -- the cream of the crap -- and created The Rejection Collection, a place where good ideas go when they die. Too risqué, silly, or weird for The New Yorker, the cartoons in this book offer something no other collection has: They have never been seen in print until now.

With a foreword by New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff that explains the sound judgment, respectability, and scruples not found anywhere in these pages, and handwritten questionnaires that introduce the quirky character of each artist, The Rejection Collection will appeal to fans of The New Yorker...and to anyone with a slightly sick sense of humor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-09-27

This book is a must have for those who love New Yorker cartoons. They are even more amusing than some cartoons that are published, however, they are definitely not appropriate for all magazine viewers!!!

2 out of 5 stars Rejected With Good Reason.......2007-09-23

I'm a fan of New Yorker cartoons and would be the first to congratulate the editorial staff on the fine job it's done these eighty years in discovering new talent, employing recognized masters like Charles Addams and Peter Arno, and knowing which cartoons fit the style and tone of the celebrated publication. The editors were wise to give most of the cartoons here in The Rejection Collection a big thumbs down. Sure, there are some concepts in this collection I liked and was surprised they weren't included in the magazine (Pat Byrnes' material most of all, the Marchetto quip on page 95, which was hilarious, and the Tom Cheney illustration on page 114, too) but mostly what's here is a gathering of gross, unfunny, perverse and mocking drawings that the readers of the New Yorker did fine without seeing at all. A much better collection would have dug into the vaults and let us see some rejected pieces that went back decades instead of just the 2000's. I understand a second volume of rejects is coming out this year and I hope it's not the letdown this one was.

5 out of 5 stars You MUST have this book!.......2007-09-19

This is a hilarious and sometimes screamingly funny collection of cartoons that were deemed "too resque, silly, or weird" for publication. In other words, right up my alley.

As big as this volume is, it represents a small percentage of the thousands of brilliant items not fit for the New Yorker, and is absolutely over-the-top funny!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be read in public..........2007-09-05

....unless you don't mind being seen cackling, gasping for breath with beer
running out of your nose.
You already know that these are cartoons by New Yorker cartoonists that were
rejected by that magazine. If you're a regular reader of the New Yorker, this book
will be a revelation: the difference between these cartoons and the ones that get
published is not just that these are much funnier. The difference lies in the
exuberance and boundary-pushing that's the hallmark or true art. Or at least
true cartoons. There's less of the insider-joke smarminess that congratulates you
for being hip enough to get what the joke is. Seeing what the magazine didn't
want to publish has diminished my respect for it just a bit. (I'm not cancelling my
subscription though.)

There's the cartoon of the couple sitting on a couch. Through the window, we see
the full moon. The man is visibly turning into a werewolf. The woman observes:
"You're lucky. I'm turning into my mother." Then there's the Roadkill Zoo and the
Santa with a craving for venison and the ventriloquist who getting drunk while
his dummy barfs and. . . . . . .

_Lynn Hoffman, author of bang BANG, which was rejected once or twice itself

5 out of 5 stars A Funny Twist on the Usual New Yorker Cartoons.......2007-08-01

The New Yorker cartoons are always fun to read. This book of rejects contains many that can be categorized as "Things you think about but would never dare put on paper." They are laugh-out-loud funny. In addition to the rejected cartoons, each cartoonist was asked to complete a questionnaire, including his/her explanation of what an ink blob reminded him/her of. A most enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars Funny John Stewart.......2007-09-07

I like the Jon Stewart show immensely and this book is a good primer on the humor of our "democracy inaction". I'm giving this book and Lloyd Dangle's newly released book "Troubletown Told You So: Comics That Could've Saved Us From This Mess" to all my relatives this year. And frankly both these books should be taught in college government classes! Troubletown Told You So: Comics that Could've Saved Us from this Mess

4 out of 5 stars Too funny..........2007-09-05

What can you say? Is it the old school book library feel? Is it the constant sarcasm?

The book is simply funny.

Warning -- Very much like Denis Miller, Stewart's brand of humor is somewhat intellectual in nature. If you are looking for slapstick, you a) don't watch Stewart and b) are definitely buying the wrong book.

5 out of 5 stars if you like J.S, you'll like this.......2007-07-03

English is my second language and I thought I would have some problem to understand the jokes but they were clear.
Good book eve if you don't agree with everything.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious look at politics by Jon Stewart.......2007-06-10

I love "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", it's really the best comedy on TV. Therefore I bought this book. This is a mischievious deadpan comedy book, which traces not only the history of America, but of democracy and humanity. The book is written in a standard text book style which took me back to university. It was just fun reading this book.

Im my opinion if you love "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and how the host takes on politics, you really have to buy this book.

Furthermore, I recommend The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Indecision 2004 and Naked Pictures of Famous People.

3 out of 5 stars A bit juvenile...........2007-05-14

It's a bit juvenile but that's a kind of what I'd expected from John Stewart. I know he's got better stuff in his head than this. If you're looking for good political books I'd suggest Bill Maher's books though. Keep this for your backup on those long drives though. :-)

Book Description

The Party, After You Left brings together the last nine years of cartoons from Roz Chast. Together these drawings, which originally appeared in the New Yorker, Scientific American, Redbook, and other publications, constitute a spot-on record of our increasingly absurd existence. As the twenty-first century begins, we can only be grateful that Roz Chast is here to tackle some of the tough themes of the times: genetically altered mice, birthday parties from hell, and comfort drinks in the age of insecurity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious -- I've Given This to Everyone I Know.......2007-08-01

Ms. Chast should be able to retire now based on the amount of money I've spent just buying copies of this wonderfully witty book. It's good, clean humor that anyone would love. In fact, one of my friends has permanently borrowed MY copy . . .

5 out of 5 stars I laughed until I stopped.......2007-02-12

I've always loved Roz Chasts cartoons, so having the collection in one book is a real treat. Recommed this to anybody with a sense of humour!

5 out of 5 stars From the house of low goals..........2007-01-30

Favorites in the New Yorker, these cartoons' self-effacing, on-point humor will tickle you. The battles of the sexes, the generations and things (guilt, social angst) we maybe didn't realize till Chast shows us. A middle age travel book that's perceptive, well-drawn, unselfconscious and funny best of all.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-01-17

Since her first cartoons in the New Yorker I have found Ms Chast to be absolutely in line with my own sense of the absurdities we find around us. Maybe it's generational, I find the same with Matt Groening and both the Simpsons and his other cartoons. A great book with an excellent chronological collection of some of her best.

5 out of 5 stars She's The Best.......2005-12-11

I was afraid I would be disappointed because I expect so much of her, based on her past and present cartoons. I love this book, and it never gets old. Turn to any page when you need a good laugh. My dream is to have lunch with Roz Chast and Jon Stewart. My idea of Beautiful people.

The stinkers, the rascals, the reprobates. . . and the just plain dumb.

(Yes, Bill, he's talking about you.)

Geraldo Rivera. The Coca-Cola Company. Victoria Gotti. Tom Cruise. Various members of the Bush administration. All have earned the dishonor of "Worst Person in the World," awarded by MSNBC's witty and controversial reporter Keith Olbermann on his nightly MSNBC show Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Now, he brings all his bronze, silver, and gold medalists together in this wildly entertaining collection that reveals just how twisted people can be—and how much fun it is to call them out on it.

From tongue-in-cheek observations to truly horrific accounts, Olbermann skewers both the mighty and the meek, the well-known and the anonymous for their misdeeds, including:

Ann Coulter, for, among other things, calling Muslims "ragheads" in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington

Barbara Bush, for making a generous donation to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund earmarked exclusively for the purchase of computer software . . . software sold by her son, Neil

The staff of Your World with Neil Cavuto, for the story about the murders of Iraqi civilians that was accompanied by the on-screen graphic: "All-out Civil War in Iraq: Could It Be a Good Thing?"

Olbermann also reports on some of the recent fallout from his awards, such as the controversy with John Gibson and the mysterious disappearance of remarks about Cindy Sheehan on Rush Limbaugh's Web site. Plus, he reveals the winner of the most coveted award of all: "Worst in Show."

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother, unless you are small minded also.......2007-10-02

This is the ramblings of a very small minded man, that once could give sports commentary but not anything that resembles news. He uses his platform to lie and exercise his revenge on persons who don't agree with his political views. He has no low. He will go where ever he must, it is just shameful. This book and his program upset me because he must feel that his viewers are without a brain. That they would not check out his out right lying on persons. Don't we have enough hate out there? If you read this book, do yourself a favor, don't take his word for anything, do some research and you will be outraged!!!

1 out of 5 stars Not Surprising At All.......2007-10-01

Keith Olbermann's attempt at writing a book is a joke. This piece isn't even worth the cost of the paper it took to make it. His show on MSNBC is pathetic, and he actually thinks someone would be interested in his thoughts on who is the "worst person in the world"! If this were his life story, it would make sense, but as it is, there is no sense here at all. The book is poorly written and one well worth skipping over for something else. If you want to read about the worst person in the world, read Ann Coulter's book, "High Crimes & Misdemeanors". At least then you will get your money's worth on the book.

1 out of 5 stars Thought it was an auto-biography.......2007-09-29

You know out of all the real monsters that exist in our world Bill O' Reilly is not one of them. Perhaps Mr. Olbermann thinks so because his ratings are so pathetic compared to O'Reilly.

This was a painful book from a guy whose show is bankrupting MSNBC.

5 out of 5 stars The spirit of Edward R. Murrow is alive & well.......2007-09-14

In a broadcast world full of talking heads who parrot Big Brother's doublespeak for fear of being branded unpatriotic, there is Keith Olbermann. A cutting wit wielding the sword of Truth, Olbermann slices through the fog that eminates from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Who'd have thought that America's best newsman would be a former sportscaster.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Insights from Olbermann.......2007-09-07

I liked this book and beyond that like the fact that Olbermann is always willing to turn the screws on the politicians that are running our country into the ground. Having previously dissected the factual inaccuracies of a single bellicose talk show host in Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, Al Franken takes his fight to a larger foe: President George W. Bush, the Bush Administration, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, and scores of other conservatives whom, he says, are playing loose with the facts. It's a lot of ground to cover, as evidenced by the 43 chapters in Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, but the results are often entertaining and insightful. Franken occupies a unique place in the modern political dialogue as perhaps the media's only comedy writer and performer who is also a Harvard fellow as well as a liberal political commentator. This unique and vaguely lonely position lends a charming quixotic quality to adventures such as a tense encounter with the Fox News staff at the National Press Club, a challenge to fisticuffs with National Review Editor Rich Lowry, and an oddly sweet admissions visit to ultra-conservative Bob Jones University (with a young research assistant posing as his son when Franken's real-life son refuses to participate in the charade). Less useful are comic book dramatizations of "Supply Side Jesus" and a fictitious Vietnam War story featuring the numerous righties who, Franken intimates, improperly avoided service. And Franken's criticisms of conservative talk show hosts Sean Hannity, O'Reilly, and columnist Coulter, while admirable in their attention to detail, fail to shed much new light on people who have built careers on broad arguments and relentless self-aggrandizement. But Franken is at his best, and most compellingly readable, when he backs off the wackiness and the personal grudges and writes about more personal matters such as the political circus surrounding the memorial service of the late Senator Paul Wellstone. But even on these more serious topics, Franken's wit is still present and, in fact, grows sharper. In a time when much political discourse is composed of rage and shouting, it's refreshing that Al Franken is able to shout in a witty manner. --John Moe

Book Description

Al Franken, one of our “savviest satirists” (People), has been studying the rhetoric of the Right. He has listened to their cries of “slander,” “bias,” and even “treason.” He has examined the Bush administration's policies of squandering our surplus, ravaging the environment, and alienating the rest of the world. He's even watched Fox News. A lot.

And, in this fair and balanced report, Al bravely and candidly exposes them all for what they are: liars. Lying, lying liars. Al destroys the liberal media bias myth by doing what his targets seem incapable of: getting his facts straight. Using the Right's own words against them, he takes on the pundits, the politicians, and the issues, in the most talked about book of the year.

Timely, provocative, unfailingly honest, and always funny, Lies sticks it to the most right-wing administration in memory, and to the right-wing media hacks who do its bidding.

Download Description

"Al Franken, ""one of our savviest satirists"" (People), takes on the issues, the politicians, and the pundits in one of the most anticipated books of the year. For the first time since his own classic Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations, Al Franken trains his subversive wit directly on the contemporary political scene. Now, the ""master of political humor"" (Washington Times) destroys the myth of liberal bias in the media, and exposes how the Right shamelessly tries to deceive the rest of us. No one is spared as Al uses the Right's own words against them. Not the Bush administration and their rhetorical hypocrisy. Not Ann Coulter and her specious screeds. Not the new generation of talk-radio hosts, and not Bill O'Reilly, Roger Ailes, and the entire Fox network. This is the book Al Franken fans have been waiting for (and his foes have been dreading). Timely, provocative, unfailingly honest, and always funny, Lies is sure to become the most talked about book of political humor in 2003 and beyond."

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Franken.......2007-09-22

This book while maybe not so fair and balanced does tell about the lies that people such as Sean Hannity, Anne Coulter, and Bill O'Reiley tell. This book is very funny escpecially the chapter when he and one of his TeamFranken crew went to Bob Jones University.

A very interesting read!

5 out of 5 stars We NOW Know The Truth of it.......2007-09-15

Believe it or not, I was a registered Republican for decades. However, no longer. I think we need a little humor because the truth is so horrible to face. Using the fear of 9/11 and driving it into outrage to push an unfounded invasion into Iraq, the Republicans have earned us the disdain of all, including our own allies. We have also descended into astounding national debt. Our people and pets are being poisoned by imported food and toys (thanks to the "Fair Trade Agreement"). We also have fewer American businesses still in operation (Fenton Art Glass is closing after many generations of American glasswork). Also thanks to George Bush "Amnesty" plan (free citizenship for criminals), we are being invaded by millions of Illegal Aliens. NOW we know that people like Al Franken and others who humorously told the truth from the very start, were the actual real news reporters. I used to hate him and his ilk as Anti-American. How deluded could I have been?? Gee, and we thought Comedy Central's "Daily Report" was just fiction?? Check out their real news reporting with a humorous spin. Okay, the few people who still hold onto the strings of hope that George Bush can speak a modicum of truth will hate this book. I'm simply a realist AND an EX-Republican.

5 out of 5 stars Funny look at shout shows . . ........2007-08-02

I loved Al's book. I thought it was a great mix of political analysis and satire. He takes aim at the shout shows like the O'Reilly Factor and most of the Fox Media lineup who have continually claimed that the media has liberal bias. He looks at this claim and others made by the get loud opinion crowd including O'Reilly and Coulter. He has worked hard along with "team Franken" a group of students from Harvard to debunk the factual misrepresentations of the Right wing media and fact check the issues.

He also pulls some silly stunts like pretenting to have a son/nephew who wants to attend Bob Jones University which is an non-acredited conservative christian University which until recently (after 2000) did not allow interracial dating. He and a member of "team Franken" go on a visit and ask questions until they are found out and feel really relieved because the students were so nice. I thought it was a funny look at the Right particularly the overblown egos of the Right wing media.

2 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2007-07-29

I didn't care that Franken lives in a leftist fantasyland in which he makes egregious mistakes on many pages, just as those he mistakenly defines as "conservative" makes mistakes on theirs. What I do care about is that this book is so excruciatingly political it is an unbearable bore. I couldn't read it, only glance though it looking for something interesting. I did find a few things, such as when Franken challenged girlyman Rich Lowry to a fight in his garage. That was funny, but it was about the only thing. For the most part this book is a flash-in-the-pan, and, thank God, will be forgotten.

1 out of 5 stars Why the name-callin?.......2007-07-16

I won't as much as pick up this book, sounds like-smells like a lot of speculative bashing and reading into things that aren't really worth getting into! I second the nomination of impeachment of one William Jefferson Clinton! Godspeed!

Book Description
The 9/11 Report for Every American

On December 5, 2005, the 9/11 Commission issued its final report card on the government's fulfillment of the recommendations issued in July 2004: one A, twelve Bs, nine Cs, twelve Ds, three Fs, and four incompletes. Here is stunning evidence that Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón, with more than sixty years of experience in the comic-book industry between them, were right: far, far too few Americans have read, grasped, and demanded action on the Commission's investigation into the events of that tragic day and the lessons America must learn.

Using every skill and storytelling method Jacobson and Colón have learned over the decades, they have produced the most accessible version of the 9/11 Report. Jacobson's text frequently follows word for word the original report, faithfully captures its investigative thoroughness, and covers its entire scope, even including the Commission's final report card. Colón's stunning artwork powerfully conveys the facts, insights, and urgency of the original. Published on the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, an event that has left no aspect of American foreign or domestic policy untouched, The 9/11 Report puts at every American's fingertips the most defining event of the century.

"Never before have I seen a nonfiction book as beautifully and compellingly written and illustrated as The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation. I cannot recommend it too highly. It will surely set the standard for all future works of contemporary history, graphic or otherwise, and should be required reading in every home, school and library." --Stan Lee

A Statement on The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation
by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón
The cave paintings in Altamira, Spain, tell stories. Mostly they tell tales of the hunt. Drawn during the Paleolithic Stone Age, they still amaze us with their lucidity and directness. As an artist, and as an editor and writer in the graphic medium, we each pay homage to those delineators and interpreters of experience. They offered accounts of what happened and provided a way of remembering, honoring, and learning. When retold by the fire's flickering light, these stories must have lent the drawings a compelling, virtual movement. There is something eerie, but deeply gratifying, in knowing that a direct line runs from our contemporary comic art to these earliest efforts to record and convey what happened. Storyteller, audience, drawings depicting continuity of event: it all sounds familiar. In a culture that has become the most visually oriented in the history of humankind, comics retain the original concept of storytelling and remain a potent force of information. Read more

2 out of 5 stars 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation.......2007-09-19

Naturally, this graphic adaptation has been getting a lot of flack from different people related to the September 11th attacks, because they still feel that comics are for a child's enjoyment, to entertain and encourage a child's humor, and they don't know that in some ways they can do more than books in both informing through words and explaining through art. Sometimes a lot more can be said through a picture with words.

I have to say though, after sloughing through this graphic adaptation of the 9/11 Report, I will not be reading that long and important source any time soon. The graphic novel is heavy and complicated enough to get through. But if one wishes to get the complete story of not just exactly what happened on September 11th, 2001, but all the events leading up to it with the terrorists and the state of our foreign policy with the Middle East, then pick up this graphic novel and take it all in . . . it's all there.

Apart from the introduction from two of the commissioners of the 9/11 Report, the graphic adaptation begins with a four-way split streamline of the four planes, when they took off and under what circumstances, what happened on the planes with the hijackers, and what the eventual resulting attack was. What makes this quite fascinating is that by charting them all together one can see the initial plan of having all the hijackers carry out their plans at the same time, but due to different circumstances and delays this was not the case.

In the next chapter, the authors go into detail on how the FAA and different government bodies could have and should have done things differently according to all their previous regulations. It does prove that had everyone been doing what they should've, some of those planes may not have hit those targets, or at least something else and less devastating might have happened.

The rest of the book is spent in going into the history of the circumstances that led up to the hijackers boarding the planes. It's heavy reading, but the pictures make it a lot clearer and easier to understand. One gets a full picture on everyone and what they were doing, and how many different people and places were involved. It's actually quite surprising.

The book (as I'm sure the 9/11 Report does also) is clear in pointing out that while the Bush administration was certainly to blame in some cases, the previous Clinton administration was very much also, and even had everything been working smoothly, the attacks may still have not been prevented. One can say they would've never happened had Clinton carried out the assassination of Usama Bin Laden, as he'd planned in the late 90s; but one can also say had Bush focused on terrorism in the Middle East when he came into office, as all his advisors were telling him (specifically Richard Clarke), then again September 11th may never have happened.

While I'm sure the graphic adaptation covers nowhere near the same ground as the actual report, it nevertheless serves its own unique purpose in making everything more succinct and clearer and easier to understand as a whole. It's the perfect book to keep in one's library so that one day in the future one can pick it up again, read it, and understand exactly what happened and more importantly why on September 11th, 2001.

1 out of 5 stars Lies, lies, lies..........2007-08-19

This book is simply to designed to misinform stupid people about 9/11.

9/11 was an "inside job" that murdered 2700 people.

This is a crime.

4 out of 5 stars amazing read.......2007-06-06

great book. it made the report seem alot more interesting that it probably was. organized, with great drawings and some cool large fold out map type pages.

5 out of 5 stars Explained a lot!.......2007-05-16

I didn't have time to read the 9-11 Commission's report, and its breadth overwhelmed me. This book explained all the main points in the report with easy language, graphics and impartiality. All lengthy, complicated reports should be done in comic-book style like this was-- then people will read them and understand what is really going on in the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what led up to 9-11.

5 out of 5 stars Great 9/11 account..........2007-04-11

This is a great review of the events of 9/11. Lots of background on both the preparation by the terrorists and the lack of preparation that made the US vulnerable. A very enjoyable read for all ages, well, maybe not the little ones!

Before Yertle, before the Cat in the Hat, before Little Cindy-Lou Who (but after Mulberry Street), Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) made his living as a political cartoonist for New York newspaper PM. Seuss drew over 400 cartoons in just under two years for the paper, reflecting the daily's New Deal liberal slant. Starting in early 1941, when PM advocated American involvement in World War II, Seuss savaged the fascists with cunning caricatures. He also turned his pen against America's internal enemies--isolationists, hoarders, complainers, anti-Semites, and anti-black racists--and urged Americans to work together to win the war. The cartoons are often funny, peopled with bowler-hatted "everymen" and what author Art Spiegelman calls "Seussian fauna" in his preface. They are also often very disturbing--Seuss draws brutally racist images of the Japanese and even attacks Japanese Americans on numerous occasions. Perhaps most disturbing is the realization that Seuss was just reflecting the wartime zeitgeist.

Dr. Seuss Goes to War marks the first time most of these illustrations have appeared in print since they were first published. Richard H. Minear's introduction and explanatory chapters contextualize the 200 editorial cartoons (some of whose nuances might otherwise be lost on the modern reader). Those who grew up on Seuss will enjoy early glimpses of his later work; history buffs will enjoy this new--if playful and contorted--angle on World War II. --Sunny Delaney

Book Description

The bestselling treasure trove of World War II political cartoons by Dr. Seuss. For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illustrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know the work Geisel did as a political cartoonist during World War II, for the New York daily newspaper PM. In these extraordinarily trenchant cartoons, Geisel presents "a provocative history of wartime politics" (Entertainment Weekly). Dr. Seuss Goes to War features handsome, large-format reproductions of more than two hundred of Geisel's cartoons, alongside "insightful" (Booklist) commentary by the historian Richard H. Minear that places them in the context of the national climate they reflect. Pulitzer Prize-winner Art Spiegelman's introduction places Seuss firmly in the pantheon of the leading political cartoonists of our time. 200 black-and-white illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Another viewpoint of history .......2007-05-14

This book is an amazing part of history. Few people would have guessed that the famed and loved childrens story teller Dr. Seuss would have been a major force for WWII political cartoons. The books is sectioned by times and people and there is a description (both historical and chronological) for every cartoon. The images are moving and the book is a must for any collector of Seuss or lover of history.

I recieved my book quickly and in excellent condition. I'm very pleased with this service. I will continue to order from amazon.

5 out of 5 stars A different view of the good doctor.......2006-10-08

Long before he started writing children's books, Theodor Geisel did advertising ("Quick Henry, the Flit!"), and even editorial cartooning. This book collects a large number of his WWII cartoon, and offers a fascinating commentary on those cartoons and on the man who drew them.

The militancy of these cartoons stands in stark contrast to the gentle goofiness of, for example, "One Fish, Two Fish." Of course, he took on Hitler, Mussolini, and other Axis leaders, using ridicule as his weapon against them. Other cartoons blast the appeasers and not-our-problem isolationists of the time. Interestingly, other cartoons came out with strongly anti-racist themes - a bit radical for the time, but he treated exclusion of blacks from wartime industry as a form of sabotage or treason. Minear's commentary offers helpful insight into the times in which the cartoons arose, and into some of the controversy they engendred, making its points with clear cross-references to specific cartoons.

It's hard to see these today as serious political statements. Too many of us grew up on The Cat in the Hat and other of Geisel's later work. When we see his distinctive lines and style, they can no longer carry the adult clout that they did in the 1940s. It's hard to see his artwork through the eyes of these cartoons' original readers, and to see the outrage that Seuss both satirized and ignited. It's worth the effort, though. WWII was a very different time than today, and did a lot to shape what today has become. Minear's book examines a unique facet of that time.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss and His Perception of World War II.......2006-06-23

Richard H. Minear examines and shows readers another side to Dr. Seuss. The cartoons discussed and shown in DR. SEUSS GOES TO WAR: THE WORLD WAR II EDITORIAL CARTOONS OF THEODOR SEUSS GEISEL portray a somewhat dehumanizing portrait of the axis powers during World War II. They are a 180-degree turn away from Seuss works that have enchanted and delighted many children and adults. However, these WWII era cartoons draw a picture of what fears and persceptions many had during the war. Art Spiegelman comments that these are the "lost" collection of cartoons by Seuss that were drawn for New York's PM newspaper from 1941-1942, and specifically served as a propaganda tool; the cartoons earned a Pulitzer Prize for Dr. Seuss.

However, they are much more controversial to present day standards, and capture the mindset of the time in which they were drawn. And the enemy were portrayed as animal-like, a flock of cats, and fumbling human-like characters with gross depictions, which share similarities of how political cartoons had been drawn during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. These cartoons are yet another collection and historical picture of the past, and cannot be compared to the Sunday funnies.

Minear attempts to keep an objective eye on his examination and commentary of each cartoon. However, Minear's commentaries through out the book have an inkling of being subjective and opinionated when he discusses how the Japanese are portrayed . He is often critical of Seuss's consistency and accuracy of the historical record.

Nonetheless, DR. SEUSS GOES TO WAR should be required reading in any history class that discusses World War perspectives. The issues in the book are historically, politically, and socially significant to World War II, and will help bring an understanding of this particular time in history.

5 out of 5 stars The great Doctor as political commentator!.......2004-07-30

Anyone who has read Dr. Seuss (and, honestly, who hasn't?) knows that his books include a great deal of political and/or social commentary disguised as children's stories. What many people don't know is that Dr. Suess started as an advertising copy writer and, early in World War II, worked as an editorial cartoonist.

This is a collection of some of his best editorial cartoons from that period, together with a detail commentary that helps to place them in their historical context. These cartoons show that Dr. Seuss was bitterly opposed to isolationism, and was clearly way ahead of his time with respect to civil rights. Ironically, however, he demonstrates a distinct bias against the Japanese that almost feels racist.

This is a facinating glimpse into a largely overlooked chapter of a celebrated artist's career, and should be required reading for anyone who wants a better understanding of Dr. Seuss, the man.

4 out of 5 stars Not to Mention Bloomin.......2007-08-10

Every cynical skeptic understands THE ONION gets it left approximately 97.6543% of the time and this gets it about that. Enlightening, entertaining, with frequent mention of mind altering substances, bodily parts and functions, God and Hell and politics and all sorts of stuff and nonsense. (Jeanketeers Unite!)

5 out of 5 stars Boyfriend loves it!.......2007-07-07

I bought this book for my boyfriend last Christmas. He loves the Onion and their books. You can't miss with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Tears (of Laughter) Will Develop in Your Eyes as You Peel the Layers (Turn the Pages) of the Onion.......2007-06-11

The excellent news parody The Onion has bound together another collection of their weekly newspaper, telling us their readers stories the main networks don't seem to want to tell us. The Onions inside are from the editions published online and in print between the 18th of November 2004 and the 14th December 2005. Some of the stories within are a bit shorter as they are incomplete than their original online format but the humour happens in what is there along with the headlines.

Whilst the Onion has a huge cult following, not everyone has heard of it. If you've enjoyed parody news TV shows such as CNNN or its still going spin off The Chaser then this is the book for you. Also if you're still unsure about buying this book you can just type in the onion dot com into your computer see the latest Onions and you'll know what your getting.

Other great parody fiction is out there but to name three you may be interested in if you enjoyed this book are Where's Bin Laden? by Daniel Lalic which is an excellent parody of the Where's Wally (Waldo in North America) series. 101 Places Not to Visit: Your Essential Guide to the World's Most Miserable, Ugly, Boring and Inbred Destinations by Adam Russ which is an excellent parody of those travel books that only mention the good things about destinations. The Self-Destruction Handbook: 8 Simple Steps to an Unhealthier You is an excellent and extremely funny parody of all those annoying self help books that want to make you a better you.

It's hard to imagine a book on this topic that's better than Drawn and Quartered. Authors Stephen Hess and Sandy Northrop have created a history that is lucid, authoritative, and fun. The profuse illustrations are, as one would expect, varied and entertaining. Even better, the cartoons featured do an excellent job of demonstrating the evolution of political cartooning from Ben Franklin (America's first editorial cartoonist) to the present.

Hess and Northrop do an excellent job of relating cartoons to the political and social climate in which they were created. For example, "Caricatures of [Martin Luther] King, Malcolm X, and the other African American leaders who rose to prominence [in the 1950s and 1960s] are hard to find. Cartoonists and their newspapers grew so sensitive to the volatility of caricaturing black leaders, fearing that they would be perceived as racial slurs.... Instead, cartoonists employed generic situations and peopled them with generic black figures. Martin Luther King Jr. became an invisible man in the cartoons of the [era]."

Readers casually interested in the topic will find Drawn and Quartered an entertaining and unique book. Aficionados will be satisfied with the book's sagacity and depth, and may even discover illustrators that they did not know. All will agree that Hess and Northrop deserve a round of applause. --Michael Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Both entertaining and educational........1998-08-24

This well-conceived book truly reminds us that political cartooning has held a giant role in our nation's history -- and perhaps more than it has ever been given credit for. The authors make a stong case of cartooning's political vitality, past and present. The book is a very engaging and fun read not only because of its generous use of cartooning, but also because the authors take effort to put each cartoon they use into a fitting historical context. The reader is also on a guided tour of cartooning's historical phases, starting from the 18th century. The authors suggest that some six different phases (eras) of American political cartooning can be traced.
