Book Description
Based on questions from women who have attended author David Deida's highly acclaimed relationships seminars, this must-have book puts male behavior under the microscope. Included are chapters on sex, work, relationships and communication. Interspersed throughout are sidebars that shed light on the many faces of men and help women grasp what makes them act the way they do.

It's A Guy Thing.......2007-09-23
I loved this book with its short little chapters covering specific things that guys just do and many women just don't get. It's a must read for any gal who seems to think her man should act or react like her girlfriends or is just plain baffled by male behavior. David Deida is genius in presenting the differences between the male and female psyche. Another recommendation for women would be to read Dear Lover: A Woman's Guide To Men, Sex, And Love's Deepest Blissalso by David Deida and The Way Of The Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Woman, Work, and Sexual Desireshould be required reading for all men!
One of the best books on understanding the sexes.......2007-08-23
I've been involved in self awareness work for 29 years. The relief I find by understanding Divine Masculine and Feminine energies is tremendous. It has given me the clarity to know what serves me best in intimate relationship, how I can best serve my partner, and how we can keep passion and love alive. I wish this book was given to every girl when she turned 16 as a "rite of passage" tool. As a Holistic Energy Healer, I use these teachings with clients to help them through crisis and gain a deeper understanding of their own true nature. This book is laid out in bite sized chunks of info that are easy to assimilate and refer to. It is a great on its own, or as an introduction to David Deida's other books.
Men, Demystified.......2007-08-14
This guy knows what it means to be a man, and he puts that into words better than anyone else I've ever heard or read. This book is a must-have for any and every woman who is confused about her man. If you read this book, you will understand what makes men tick.
mars and venus takes a spiritual step.......2006-07-17
I've read Deida's "The way of the Superior Man" as well as "Dear Lover" and am a bit biased at this point as I think his work is helpful within a larger understanding of how men and women typically behave (read Men are from Mars Women are from Venus first), but can come across as extreme at times (more in "dear lover" than this book or "superior man") Overall, Deida's work has been helpful for me. I've explored Deida's ideas and advice with my Man over tha past several months, and find it is usually helpful, but I think much of it would have been hard for me to swallow/potentially damaging if I hadn't read other books on male/female behaviour first. Use your judgement and filter the more perverse aspects of Deida's philosophy against the larger picture of your ethics and use what is helpful to you, discard the rest.
guy thing.......2006-03-19
This book was helpful for understanding guy logic. I learned alot and found it informative. However, the book also tends to be repetitive and could have been edited more stringently.

Men's Health magazine has created a publishing phenomenon out of what could be described as the Four Ps: penis, pump, prostate, potbelly. Almost every article in every issue of the magazine has something to do with preventing heart attack, preventing prostate cancer, preventing impotence, or reversing waistline bulges. This Owner's Manual mercifully strays beyond those four topics, to offer advice on how men can wear makeup, deal with "bashful bladder syndrome" and male breast cancer, and reverse circumcision. There's also a lot of perfectly useful information about how the body works and how to make it work better, but the esoterica is a lot more fun to read.

A Must-Have Resource!.......2007-07-05
I have purchased a multitude of these to give to people I care about. This book was well-written and organized - I only wish the author would produce a newer edition with more current medical statistics. I highly recommend this as a gift for a pre-pubescent boy as well as for a grown man. This gives them an amazing plethera of knowledge that sadly most men lack. Don't pass this book up. I recommend an edition for you and an extra to give to someone you love. I am a Registered Nurse in an Emergency Department and really feel this book is helpful. Caution: does contain information on reproduction so perhaps not for younger children. I gave this to my son when he was 13 years old and he has read it cover-to-cover many times (memorized most of it). If it can hold the interest of a teen, that speaks VOLUMES.
The Male Body.......2006-12-09
I purchased this book as a gift for my 22 year old son based upon the glowing reviews I read on-line. It was my goal to educate my son in regards to health and fitness, as well as nutrition. Upon the arrival of this book, I found it to have a disgusting approval and promotion of the homosexual lifestyle. While I don't mind what others do in their private time, I do not want to advocate and show my son intimate details of what this lifestyle entails. I advise all parents to be very careful reading the reviews as they certainly are not on the "up and up" and often have a different agenda than what you may expect.
GREAT BREAKDOWN .......2006-10-06
Impressed. I even bought a copy for my boys. I like the way they take a part of the anatomy and detail it. Great tips on staying healthy and excellent talk of preventing future problems. BUY IT!
Excellent book.......2005-09-02
This is an informative read. I recommend it highly for any one wanting a very thorough guide to the male body and staying healthy and fit. An excellent book!!!
Very understandable and informative, I highly recommend it........1999-06-15
Found it easy to find information. Most of my questions were answered by this book.

With such chapter headings as "Under the Hood," "Yielding the Right of Way: Consent," and "Avoiding Hazardous Conditions: STDs," Mavis Jukes's Guy Book offers friendly, accurate, and up-to-date advice for prepubescent and adolescent boys. Covering a range of topics, from masturbation to decoding girls' signals to making that earth-shattering choice between boxers and briefs, this wise collection of information and how-tos will appeal to the testosterone-ridden boy who would sooner die than ask his mom or one of his buddies about spontaneous erections or confusing emotions. On the other hand, Jukes encourages readers throughout to talk to friends and caring, responsible adults, and offers guy-appropriate lingo and tips to help facilitate tough situations. On breaking up with a girl: "Breaking up on a Saturday afternoon at your soon-to-be-ex's house (where support is available) would be better than springing it on a Monday morning at school." Humorous, ironic 50s-style illustrations feature pistons (accompanying male anatomy discussions), engines, and clean-cut boys and girls in big old cars.
Don't fret, girls! Jukes is also the author of It's a Girl Thing: How to Stay Healthy, Safe, and in Charge. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Mavis Jukes is the queen of girl talk, but this time she’s set her sights on the guys. Told in the author’s usual straightforward, funny, favorite-aunt style, The Guy Book delivers sound information and useful advice for boys preparing to go through, or in the midst of, puberty. Boys will find specific information on a variety of subjects, from getting rid of acne to buying birth control to finding help for depression. Answering questions that are too embarrassing to ask, dealing with guy-basics like tying a tie, being a good friend, and essential dating dos and don’ts, this is a must-have for boys who want to get the facts, be in control, and learn how to make informed choices.

Not a bad book at all..........2007-09-13
My son, 16, is shy about asking questions about sexual matters. This little book gives answers to those and others he might have. It is written in a quaint, kind of retro style. I would recommend it for any parent who wants to "have the talk", but doesn't know where to start.
Book for a freshman.......2007-08-30
We bought this book for our son who is a freshman in high school. It is very informative and takes a new spin on giving advice. He feels he really got alot out of it.
The Guy Book - GREAT.......2007-05-13
This is a great book for kids 12 and older. Great to read with your son....as everything, I mean EVERYTHING, you need to know and more than you wanted to know in some areas.
Richie's Picks: THE GUY BOOK.......2007-02-22
I did, in fact, know from a young age that "scrotum" was the name of that particular part of my body. But I had absolutely no understanding of the startling, unnerving things that began happening to my body while I was in middle school. Despite spending hours and hours of quality time with my father, regularly working alongside him on his construction sites from a very young age, I was never given "The Talk."
Nor did I have a big brother or sister to guide me through an understanding of the physical changes, the intense feelings, or the perplexing social stuff at school. It was all totally baffling. The result was that throughout middle school I was a great student and a nervous wreck; a quiet kid filled with discomfort and uncertainty. It was bad enough to be picked on and called names without already thinking that the weird things I'd been experiencing were certain proof that there must be something wrong with me.
Unfortunately for me and my contemporaries, Mavis Jukes was still a high school student when I was struggling hormonally, emotionally, and socially in seventh and eighth grades. Fortunately for today's middle school students, Mavis grew up and eventually became an author. Thanks to her having written IT'S A GIRL THING: HOW TO STAY HEALTHY, SAFE, AND IN CHARGE, followed a few years later by THE GUY BOOK: AN OWNER'S MANUAL, today's Twenty-First Century middle school students can avoid being caught in the sort of position in which I found myself.
Today there are serious, potentially life-threatening consequences to traversing middle school while hamstrung by the ignorance with which I traversed it four decades ago. Mavis Jukes not only explains the workings of the body and the changes that adolescents are undergoing physically, but also talks about dangerous behaviors and myths that can kill and provides information about the availability of counseling for those having a bad time of things.
But in addition to the obvious need to understand such weighty topics as sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, and the absolute need to understand that "'No' Never Means 'Yes,'" it is also essential that middle school students going through these developmental changes avoid having their self-esteem undermined by a lack of information, a problem that is so easily remedied by this book.
As noted on the KidsKeepHealthy website:
"Adolescents with high self-esteem are more likely to believe in themselves and have a sense of importance and self-respect. Self-esteem affects how your children will approach new tasks or challenges and how they interact with others. Teenage children with low self-esteem may avoid challenging activities or may give up quickly, quit, or cheat when things aren't going their way. A child with low self esteem may also be a bully, bossy, controlling, have a low level of self control, and have difficulty making friends."
THE GUY BOOK: AN OWNER'S MANUAL is not only an important source of information, it is an entertaining read. Beginning with the cover image and continuing throughout the book, the author employs an automotive metaphoric treatment with vintage car photos and title headings such as "Under the Hood," "Ignition System," "Rules of the Road: Driver Etiquette," and "Customizing: Developing Your Own Style." In the book's sixteen chapters there is a wealth of information on such practical topics as shaving, pimples, the rights and wrongs of ogling girls, the inside scoop on what their female peers are feeling, on crushes, on who pays when out on a date, on meeting a girl's parents, and on how to slow dance for the first time. Some of the information is downright hilarious -- at least in retrospect -- such as the author's explanation of which strategies employed in hopes of getting noticed by girls might result in your being seen by them in a positive light, and which strategies are bound to have quite the opposite effect. Some of the information is just so amazingly important, such as her discussion of feelings:
"Both boys and girls (and men and women) feel all ways: strong and weak, powerful and vulnerable, confident and insecure, courageous and afraid.
"These are human feelings. They're not attached to a particular gender."
In light of the recent debate concerning some librarians who are excluding the Newbery Medal-winning THE HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY from their school library collections because of the mere inclusion of an anatomical term -- dog's scrotum -- it can be expected that there is a similar group of librarians opposed to the inclusion of THE GUY BOOK in middle school collections. This, of course, puts those librarians' middle school patrons at risk. Considering that every year, in every corner of America, there are middle school students who become sexually active prior to high school, thus facing the possibility of their causing a pregnancy or contracting AIDS during their initial sexual explorations, librarian-imposed ignorance is surely a matter of malpractice that borders on the criminal.
It is hard to imagine a girl today experiencing her first period and having nobody willing to provide her information on why this new thing is happening to her body or, perhaps, suggesting that she wait until high school before obtaining accurate information from her school's library media center. For a boy to experience his first nocturnal emission without having either prior or subsequent information as to what is going on can be no less traumatic then was Brat's ignorance upon experiencing her first menstrual cycle in THE MIDWIFE'S APPRENTICE.
The original intent of having public education in America was to turn kids into good citizens. This is a book with information that unquestionably contributes to that goal. If Mavis Jukes' books for girls and guys are not in your middle school collections, they need to be. And to try and bury such important resources in the shelves, rather than booktalking them and displaying them is a serious mistake.
The most detailed book for TEEN boys!.......2007-01-09
I bought this book as part of a three book set for my son's growing up library, including "The Teenage Guy's Survival Guide" by Daldry and "Boy's Guide to Becoming a Teen" by the AMA, (see my other reviews).
This book is by far the most detailed, and very in-depth book on the subject. I don't have any problem in saying this is the absolute best book on puberty and growing up for teen boys! Please keep in mind, I am a very open left wing liberal parent with total faith in my son's ability to make his own decisions about his sexuality. This book is definitely NOT for conservative parents that want to shield their boy from life and it's complicated areas! I handed it to my also very liberal boyfriend for his opinion, and he said "This book has EVERYTHING!" and looked a bit shocked. But he also said it was very thorough and said he liked the writing style, using the car analogy to draw the boy in and keep his interest.
I could list all of the sections and parts of this book out in this review... only if I had a entire month to write! Just let me suffice to say, if it exists, it's in this book (use the amazon see inside feature to view the index in the back of the book). This book doesn't glaze over ANYTHING, and I REALLY respect it for that! Nothing is taboo in this book, and the detail is amazing. I do not think it is appropiate for a first book, to introduce boys to puberty, but I think it's definitely a book all teen boys should have on hand as a resource once they have a general understanding of puberty and sex. This is borderline for pre-teens, and I think I will still give it to my son, who is almost 13 now, but I do not think he will read it, as it's very high reading level book, and he is reading at a lower level right now. I do think is book would be potentially overwhelming is attempted to be read front to back by anyone under the age of 14. However, that said, I think it should be on the bookshelf for all boys that have entered puberty, as a reference. Not for pre-teens, but required for any open and curious teenager!
I have a lot of respect for this author for wrting this book, which was sure to drum up controversy in it's scope and detail. It's a great book for teen boys though! I'd give it 6 stars if I could!

Excellent source of info.......2007-06-09
I was impressed by how much information the authors fit into this one book: it's like a guide to a woman's body. One thing I especially liked about it was how well-organized it is: it has clearly-marked sections so you can flip to what you want to read easily. Full of helpful, simple diagrams. I thought I knew everything there was to know about my body until I read this book. Also does a good job correcting some of the common myths about everything from menstruation to rape. Has especially good information on contraceptives, how to keep yourself safe from assault, and a basic overview of every part of the body (from your eyes to your skin). Unlike some women's health books, this one covers more than the typical topics of menopause and menstruation.
My only disappointments were that it barely covered same-sex love between women (barely two pages), and I would have liked more information on self-stimulation. Still, a great resource.
woman's health an owners manual.......1999-12-24
this guide has been available for years and is an excellent, well done, treatise. i have used it for my wife and daughters and close friends with complete confidence that no value is abridged; social, religious, etc.
it should be on every parent's shopping list for any child entering puberty. certainly, a must for any adult!
obviously, it has limitations on technical stuff, but the info is useful and if used it will help any reader.
Had I only known I'd have shrink wrapped that book.......1998-09-18
I received my copy in 1989 before the birth of my first child [I have 8 all mine], I didn't understand the worth of what I had. The timeline diagram of age and effect was awesome. The indepth coverage from puberty thru menapause was phemomental. It had chapters for every aspect of the female form including special chapters on sexuality, male/female and female/female relationships. It was and still is a must have. I would like to give all my daughters and nieces a copy, so this wonderous work could be enjoyed

You would think that the mythology of male sexuality is a thing of the past, that most men know that from time to time their penises won't achieve or sustain erections, and that guys have just as much right as women to occasionally not be in the mood. But images of hyperdrive masculinity still exist in popular culture, and as long as guys take them to heart, they'll continue to freak out over the smallest malfunctions. Thus, The Penis Book is a comfort object, a small and easily concealable guide to how the penis works and why it occasionally doesn't, how men can effectively prevent impregnating their partners, and how to deal with the real problems that occur, including STDs.

okay...but not great.......2004-01-30
there are many interesting tid-bits in this slim volume, unfortunately, the author, in a laudable attempt to provide comical/witty commentary, demonstrates a distinct in-ability to do so. in other words, she tries wa-a-ay too hard to be funny...and, she is not. still, if the reader is willing to wade through the unnecessary/uninspired verbage, some good information can be gleaned.
i should also say that ms. gore deserves credit for tackling such an...unusual subject, no doubt she raised a number of eyebrows when telling folks about the book...and i'm guessing there may have been some mild confusion over it's claim to be "an owner's manual"? seems a little, presumptious, margaret, unless there's something you're not telling us... : )
The Penis Unvarnished.......2003-07-04
We American guys think we know everything about penises. But the truth is we know about our own--not the penises of our friends or men of other races and cultures. This book shows how circumcision can negate sensation. While USA guys love to parade our penises on nude beached in Europe oh so proud of the so-called superior beauty of a circumcised penis WHEREAS our European friends with their so-called UGLY uncut penises are having the last laugh as they get more of a thrill from their "tool" then we do with ours. The book shows us that the old rant about size NOT mattering is the bunk every guy has always known. Size matters to heterosexual women not to gay men as much. Read this to learn that a penis needs maintenance like an old wooden tennis racquet and needs to "breath" like fine wine.

Funny, empathetic and insightful review of the male gender.......2001-06-02
As a mere male I found this book incredibly funny. I was fully prepared to be totally turned off by yet another devastating attack on the male psyche delivered by just one more male-hating, in-your-face, banner-waving, card-holding member of some feminist brigade. Instead, I found that Stephanie writes with warmth and wit, scoring some direct hits about both sexes.
It's a book I've gladly given as a gift to two girlfriends and now, my wife.
I agree with some other reviews - this book is a veritable classic. Why is it out of print?

Room for improvement.......2000-03-17
After great expectation, I found the book disappointing. Much of it was in the book's preparation. It is poorly illustrated, often making it difficult to understand what is being depicted. It has dozens of typos and grammatical errors. I also found many of the entries uneven in terms of coverage and depth, and in some cases, such as with alternative sexuality, naive. At times the book attempts to be dryly factual and at other times it editorializes. Some of the book has been "translated" into American English and some of it hasn't, sometimes mixing spelling of words on the same page -- very confusing, particularly with medical terms! I did learn a few things from the book.
