I did receive this book in an executive seminar; read it over couples of nights, a simple book with day to day tips to make things happen.
A must read for any one how dreams to become a successful executive and a reality check for those already there.
Beyond Talk.......2007-08-20
So many times in this marketing-focused world, we do very well at the talking but not very good at the walking. Many of us have seen amazing sales presentations . . . only to realize that the promises would never be met.
This book engages us in the discussion about how to do what we promise. It helps us to go beyond the sales presentation and really design a process by which we can follow through, build relationships and live a life that is full of integrity and trustworthiness.
Prime Example of Mediocraty .......2007-08-11
This book did very little for me. Largely, the book is unoriginal and simply restates ideas already presented in tons of business leadership books. This book might as well have been written for the sole purpose of patting prominent CEOs, namely Jack Welch, on the back. You would be better served to bypass this one and just go read something by Welch on leadership.
Practical business.......2007-07-27
I teach MBAs. Its well known in the field that MBAs are very competent in analysis but not so good in implementation. The reason for this is that most professors who teach business have never actually worked in business and are research analysts. They teach analysis because they are excellent in that area. I worked in business 10 years before becoming a professor. I teach my students about implementation and they are interested. This is a book about implementation at the CEO level. I'm thinking of using it as a supplementary executive MBA text.
Most important business book since Good to Great.......2007-06-08
Bossidy put together the most comprehensive top to bottom case for execution yet written. What so many books on business forget to emphasize is the people part of the equation. Bossidy balances not only having the right people but making sure the company is passionate about developing them and getting them in the right jobs where they can produce the best results for the company and themselves. Strategy is worthless without the right people that can execute to make the strategy happen. While Bossidy advocates strong messures for non preformers, he does so with delibert respect for individuals and reasonable compassion.

With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.
Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru," suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)
As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"
That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy

I have an associate who can't meet deadlines. I give him a deadline and set it two weeks before the project is needed. Doesn't matter. He won't make it. So I bought him this book. "No more projects until you read this," I told him.
He read it. He's not missed a project deadline yet.
People who have their own businesses, generally have deadlines and projects. Things have to be done by a certain time. If nothing else, we have to have our income tax in by midnight April 15 in the U.S.
But many people put things off and that creates stress. Stress for the person who procrastinates and stress for those who depend on him or her. We all need a time management system.
This book will help you to clear out your clutter. It will help you to know how to handle a project, to break it up and work at it in a way that's effective for you.
Highly recommended.

While the abridged audio CD version of Getting Things Done makes a perfect refresher tool for those who read the full book originally, too much detail and background is missing for this to be someone's first introduction to the GTD method of time management. Unfortunately, the unabridged audio won't be widely available until 2008.
Overall, the GTD system has a lot to offer. It's "open source" and "platform-independent," meaning you can use as much or as little of it as you want and adapt it to whatever organizational system you already like or are forced to use by circumstance--Outlook, FranklinCovey, 3x5s, whatever. Yes, it pretty much comes down to making a to-do list, but GTD's approach adds the subtle differences that make the lists actually effective reminders and trackers, rather than an overwhelming mess o' stuff to get done. If you've ever written something down on a list and then never looked at it again, give GTD a try.

I first bought this book about 6 months ago, and it has improved my life incredibly. Even if you don't follow every one of his suggestions, or choose not to employ David Allen's GTD system, at the very least you'll gain a much greater understanding of stress-free productivity, effective workplaces, and the bottlenecks that prevent people from achieving their full productive potential.
It certainly took longer to set up my system than the "2 days" Allen continuously mentions in the book, but even while you're setting up and fine-tuning your personal system, you begin to get a sense of that "stress-free productivity". Now, my system is running smoothly, and I've been able to control my numerous projects with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
Most importantly, having a system in place will enable you to focus on your greater goals. I work in two startup companies, but I've always had a dream of being involved in local politics; now I'm also helping coordinate a grassroots political campaign in addition to my 9-5 commitments. You may want to spend more time with your family or significant other, go golfing, start a new business venture or take up a new hobby. This book can give you the system and the structure to allow you to pursue whatever life goals you have, and I consider it an invaluable life resource. I've recommended it to many of my friends and family, and they've experienced similar results.

Allen's methodology works like magic. I finished reading the book a week ago, and I can say it had a great impact on the way I organize my life. This is much more than how to organize your time, It's about a very subtle technique - along with technology support - that helps you manage your ideas or projects and have them executed with much less effort. You would need a PDA and the Microsoft 0utlook add-in for GTD (Getting Things Done) to experience the full benefit.

The breadth of Drucker's knowledge and insights never cease to amaze me, and goes to reinforce my perception - as well as that of many others - that he is, in fact, "the founding father of the science of management." That's the reason I quoted him seven times - on seven different management topics - in by book, The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit & Growth The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit and Growth.
The essence of The Effective Executive is this: not too long ago, the business community was essentially engaged in manufacturing where the need was for efficiency - the ability to do things right.
As our business world evolved into service and science-oriented enterprises, employees became "knowledge workers" as opposed to "manual workers." Thus, a whole new set of executive qualifications were required - the key one being effectiveness - the ability to get the right things done.
He goes on to point out that intelligence, knowledge and imagination are common in most executives, and they were the primary qualities needed when our business world was engaged in manufacturing and manual workers. However, with the emergence of the service/science-oriented business world and the knowledge worker, these same qualities appear to have little correlation with an executive's effectiveness. Today's business world needs executives who can get the right things done.

This is a fantastic book. It is written in an old-school style that is somewhat hard to get through.....but the messages are very clear. This book totally changes the way you think about your role in an organization - regardless of your rank or profession. It's definitely a book you should read at least twice.

I submit this is the single best book on leadership ever written, and I've read hundreds. It is comprehensive AND practical. It's a complete system of leadership and management with useful tools on every page. You can read it from cover to cover, or dip in when you need it by using the excellent index. Powerful. Sensible. Useful. Peter Scholtes is incredibly insightful and funny. I get no money for saying that!
Great Book on Process & Quality Improvement.......2006-07-09
This is a very good book that I would recommend to any manager. I also think many employees would learn a lot from reading this book as well. So why just three stars?
The main reason is because the book talks very little in the way of leadership or inspiring your people. This is a book primarily focused on process and quality improvement, but learning about leadership and inspiring my employees is the reason I bought this book. To me, the difference between a manager and a leader is that the successful manager gets his people to do what needs to be done. A successful leader gets his people to *want* to do what needs to be done. There was a lot more information on that topics in The Team Handbook, which Scholtes co-wrote.
The truth is that I think this is a very good book, and I'd gladly give it four stars if the title was more descriptive of the book's content. What I like most about this book is the way Scholter walks the reader through the thought process of analyzing an existing process and finding ways to improve it. He bases many of his principles from Deming's work on quality improvement and, not surprisingly, many of his examples are from Japanese companies. Many of his ideas transfer easily to the American workforce, but I'm not convinced that all of them would be so effective outside of Japan, due to the cultural differences between the two workforces.
Amazon has enabled Search Inside This Book, so I would encourage anybody thinking about purchasing this book to take a peek and see the topics that Scholter covers. Flip through the Surprise Me feature and you'll likely see some of the many charts and diagrams that Scholter uses to great effect to show the reader a process, or give them a tool to analyze their own processes.
The only area that didn't sit well with me is Chapter 9, Performance without Appraisal. In this chapter it appears as though Scholtes' premise is that workers belong to McGregor's Theory X camp. While some are, the overly simplistic approach that assumes all are makes this chapter very frustrating to read. He spends a lot of time highlighting the fault of performance management, but he provides very little insight how to do it another way.
The net is that this is a very informative book presented in a very clear manner that can provide benefit for almost every manager. The title is a little misleading, so make sure you flip through the book before buying it.
Great Book.......2005-11-27
This book is among those books I feel all managers should read. The book is very well written, an easy to read book and full of useful information. It is also a great reference that once you read it you will find yourself referring to over and over.
I am biased as I have long been a friend and manage Peter's web site (www.pscholtes.com) so you can take that into account in deciding how to evaluate my advice (I have recommended the book to many people and those that share there opinions with me have all told me they agree that it is great). Other books I strongly recommend: Fourth Generation Management, The Improvement Handbook, Creating the Corporate Future and Lean Solutions.
Practical, incisive and visionary handbook.......2001-09-13
Scholtes expects to shock people right from the first page of his Preface. Let me quote extensively:
"More than 95 percent of your organization's problems derive from your systems, processes, and methods, not from your individual workers....
We look to the heroic efforts of outstanding individuals for our successful work. Instead we must create systems that routinely allow excellent work to result from the ordinary efforts of ordinary people.
Changing the system will change what people do. Changing what people do will not change the system.
Certain common management approaches--management by objectives, performance appraisal, merit pay, pay for performance, and ISO 9000--represent not leadership but the abdication of leadership.

The old organizations's leaders need: forcefulness, ability to motivate and inspire, decisiveness, willfulness, assertiveness, result- and bottom-line orientation, being task-oriented and having integrity and diplomacy.
Scholtes' new leadership competencies (much influenced by Edward Deming's ideas...) are based on a new mentality and understanding of: systems thinking, variability of work, how we learn, psychology and human behavior, interactions of these components, and vision, meaning, direction and focus.
The bulk of the book gives clear elaborations of these new competencies, with charts, illustrations, pertinent questions and many tools. Ch. 4 on "Getting the Daily Work Done" is a tough one, partly because it takes much effort to grasp the author's use of a Japanese term, "Gemba" (even when I can read the original Chinese characters). Issues of waste, standardization, change versus improvement, performance without appraisal, use of measurement data... are all seen in the new light of systems thinking.
Carefully study the differences between "Crazymakers" and "Healing and Learning" in the workplace (pp378-387). There is a summary of the book under "The 47 Habits of Pretty Good Leaders" (pp391-6). Peter Senge's books give excellent background material. This one is a real handbook that should be methodically studied, discussed, adapted and applied to one's own institutions. One must not forget the advice given in Chapter 1: "leaders must be patient with themselves and others, persistent, and humble, and allow themselves and others to be inelegant." (p12,p391)

Being a disciple of W. Edwards Demming, Peter Scholtes has a quality department's process bias; emphasizing systems, processes and statistics. Was I reading another new age quality assurance textbook? Because of this, I felt he overemphasized the present moment. True leaders are going places and have many loyal followers. The book rarely talks about this visionary thinking or how effective organizations are moving into new areas. This is a good book for beginners as long as you're aware he presents a different viewpoint, and because of this, he did bring some useful ideas that other books didn't have. Ironically, he openly admits that you may not agree with some of his viewpoints.

The author has written another classic on the dynamics of
executive management. The book suggests that organizations and
the people who run them need to assess what must be done
as a condition precedent to directing their energies productively. Time is the classic limiting factor. It applies
to the activities of everyone in the organization. The effective use of discretionary time is another important asset. The success
of organizations over time is dependent upon an uneventful
transition strategy together with the ability to continue
the business as a going concern. In Accounting, the Quasi-
Reorganization in bankruptcy provides the needed second chance
for organizations to start over again- although standard reporting requirements call for dating the retained earnings
into the future. Companies having extensive overseas operations and outsourcing must be more vigilant about disaster
recovery and contingency planning for random Acts of G-d. These
unplanned emergencies may consist of a tsunami, earthquake or
expropriation in countries where the political infrastructure
is fragile or unpredictable.
The author suggests that the organization give much thought into
choosing people and assignments to optimize organizational
strengths rather than magnifying weaknesses for short term
gain. Ultimately, maximizing strengths renders weaknesses to be
irrelevant. Each job should be structured to accommodate the
personality of the occupant(s). Accordingly, this strategy
will go a long way toward perpetuating the organization well
into the future. In addition, training and development of staff
is an important aspect of work. These activities will provide
threshold competencies so that employees can function maximally.
In addition, training assists in the development of successor
employees due to retirements, job transfers etc.
With the right people matched to the right jobs, an organization
can move forward. In addition, maximization of an individual's
strengths obviates the necessity for the classic flight/fight
phenomena in an organization. In implementation, the management philosophy aims to accentuate strengths rather than exploit weaknesses which may result in a sum zero conflict.
This rendition does not emphasize the optimal organizational
design to accomplish work, although the dynamics may vary from
firm to firm. Organizational conflicts may be reduced by
looking at the following options dispassionately:
- considering the flat organizational hierarchy with less
vertical integration, where possible
- controlling predictor information more carefully
- completing a comprehensive job and task analysis for all
company positions and vital job categories in particular
- standardizing complex operations and codifying knowledge so
that expertise is not a barrier to performing a job within
a shorter learning curve ( today artifical intelligence systems
and expert system algorithms may help accomplish this task)
- transferring employees within an organization and providing
more challenging scenarios
- providing employees a share in the ownership of the company
through stock plans or employee representation on the Board
- support and funding for staff training/development and
personal growth
- a clear and uncomplicated succession strategy
The book will assist corporate planners, human resource personnel, students of organizational design
and a large constituency of scholars in academe. It is worth
the price for the huge value of the information content contained therein.

I've tried to figure out Linux many times before but could just never get it. This book is remarkable. If you're a Linux guru this is not the book for you (it's far too simplistic for a Linux guru), but if you are a person running Windows that is sick of how poorly it performs and how much software costs, and want to switch over to a far superior operating system while making your computer faster, more secure, and never spending a penny of money on software again, this is the book for you. This book is written in plain English for people that aren't computer geeks, and is very easy to understand. It quickly gets you up and running on Ubuntu Linux (which you can download fore free) and them BAM - you're up and running. Everything is easy, works GREAT, and is FREE!!!

Book was extremely easy to follow and helped with every aspect of setting up my new OS. Although I will have to retain Windows for some of the programs I run, Ubuntu will be my main operating system.

I've been trying to install the software all weekend but my system freezes every single time at screen 1/7 (select language) although to be fair, I got to screen 2/7 once before it froze.
Save your money and order the free CD from the Ubuntu website. By the way, there is no website (that I've been able to find) that provides support.
I'm definitely a non-geek so maybe I'm missing something but this book/CD was meant for non-geeks wasn't it?

This is a great book for newbies to Unbuntu Linux. It could have a few more pictures and illustrations. The author knows his subject but he could go a little more in depth as there are thing he assumes you know and if I would have come straight from Windows to Ubuntu I would have had a hard time conprehending certain things. Overall it is one of the best books on Linux I found. I also read his Linux for Non Geeks.

In the end I removed Ubuntu from the hard disk in favor of Fedora), (my printer and graphics card were not recognized by Ubuntu Feisty.
But while I struggled with the distro, "Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks" was a great help. Very easy to follow with any number of useful examples.

This book gave me more than I espected whenI bought it.
I was looking for some guidelines on good teamwork behavior, and I didn't got just that but far more usefull insight on plain work.
Reagarding working with others, the best part is the Feedbck chapter. You'll never give advice to a team mate in the same way after you had read this book. Everybody know someone that "takes advice the wron way", well you'll learn that maybe you and everybo else are giving advice in the wrong way.
Besides this particulary well covered subject, the author explains very usefull techniques to improove not only group workin but personal efficiency. All of this is ilustrated with down to earth examples and exercises.
I read the first edition almost one year ago, and I keep going back to it as if it was reference book, and in some way it is

Geoffrey M. Bellman provides strategies that support personnel can use to bring about positive change in their organizations. A comprehensive table of contents allows you to go directly to the area of the book that most interests you. In fact, the author designed the book to be read in pieces and many topics stand on their own in manageable chunks. This alone makes the book a useful tool for people who are interested in "leading from the middle." The informal writing style and the many useful lists make these ideas accessible to readers who lack formal business training, and thus are likelier to work in support roles. Bellman believes that instead of complaining about your lack of power, you should build your power and get things done. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to anyone who isn't CEO (yet).

I'd love to give this book two ratings. I thought that it did a good job of empowering the reader and introducing basic concepts in leadership. If that was what I was looking for, it'd get 5 stars. Unfortunately, I was hoping for something a good deal more advanced and found little that was useful to me. This isn't really a ringing criticism, since no book can reach all levels of need simultaneously. If you're relatively new to leadership, this is a good book. If you're very experienced, look elsewhere.

If I take all of the management books I have read from my time at University till now and stack them up they may form a balance with this brilliant book. The wisdom, down to earth style and practical insight is not just uncommon, it is extrodinary. This book has done more to help me in different management situations than any other. The structured approach to tackling life as a manager is a solid base which leaves enough room for personal style and growth. Anyone who does not read this is at a disadvantage.

This is a book for anyone interested in improving either their company, their career or their effectiveness in an organization. Although the examples come primarily from manufacturing, the concepts are equally applicable to my business which is financial services. Whether you are in senior management or an entry level employee, this book will give you a new perspective on how to facilitate the process of change within your organization and make you more valuable. An excellent daily "devotional" for managers.......2007-03-24
This book offers excellent insight into Drucker's writings on business philosophy. For those who have never read Drucker at all, this book is a great starting point, as it encapsulates much of his writing into a single volume. The book is of particular value to anyone working in a service-related company, especially in a society where knowledge is one of the most powerful assets managers are required to protect and preserve.
An entry from January 7th reads: "Knowledge workers own the means of production...the organization needs them more than they need the organization..." The action point listed is, "Attract and retain the highest producing knowledge workers by treating them and their knowledge as the organization's most valuable assets."
The information provided in this book, when put into practice, will help any manager become more efficient and reflective about how her/his actions fit into the bigger picture. The foreword, by Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, is also very worth reading and gives a little-seen and inspirational glimpse of Drucker.

Every morning when you get to your office, you boot up your computer and you wait - conservatively - 2 minutes. During those 2 minutes, you should be reading that day's entry in the "Daily Drucker." Whether the Topic of the Month is "decision-making," "leadership" or "organizational behavior," Drucker's signature style will clear your head and give you a "swing thought" for the rest of the day. A daily dose of Drucker will remind you how you "should" run your business day, in order to be effective, rather than running things the way they really "are."
If you make his insights your own, you will learn about yourself and your organization. Eventually, you will reach your goals.
Unlike other books, this one does not contain a sustained argument, so it doesn't become dull. And, many of the quotes might be regarded as some of Drucker's most user-friendly. Plus, each quote is capped off with an "action item" by the editor, Maciarello, who does an admirable job in teasing out some of the implications of Drucker's writing.
P.S. This is the perfect gift to give an executive.

I'm not sure how appreciative a person who has not read Peter Drucker's works could be of this gem. But for those who have, The Daily Drucker is a marvelous distillation and condensation of some of Druker's most penetrating insights from his many books and other works.
Drucker was, of course, the dean of management consultants, a man who clearly saw into the intricacies of marshalling and directing resources toward both commercial and social goals.
For those not familiar with Drucker, the one page digests provide an excellent, if out of context, introduction to his style.
Drucker was truly unique. He saw the past, present and future. His recent death was a loss, but fortunately his wisdom lives on in books like The Daily Drucker.
