Book Description
"If you really loved me..."
"After all I've done for you..."
"How can you be so selfish..."
Do any of the above sound familiar? They're all examples of emotional blackmail, a powerful form of manipulation in which people close to us threaten to punish us for not doing what they want. Emotional blackmailers know how much we value our relationships with them. They know our vulnerabilities and our deepest secrets. They are our mothers, our partners, our bosses and coworkers, our friends and our lovers. And no matter how much they care about us, they use this intimate knowledge to give themselves the payoff they want: our compliance.
Susan Forward knows what pushes our hot buttons. Just as John Gray illuminates the communications gap between the sexes in Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and Harriet Lerner describes an intricate dynamic in The Dance of Anger, so Susan Forward presents the anatomy of a relationship damaged by manipulation, and gives readers an arsenal of tools to fight back. In her clear, no-nonsense style, Forward provides powerful, practical strategies for blackmail targets, including checklists, practice scenarios and concrete communications techniques that will strengthen relationships and break the blackmail cycle for good.

If you keep asking yourself, whadd'id I do? and walking on eggshells, this book is for YOU!.......2007-10-04
This book was recommended by a close friend who'd been listening to my "what happened?" tales of confusion and she recognized the syndrome instantly. "Emotional Blackmail". Just the title itself is helpful before the book even arrives at your door. Granted, it's very important to examine what part you may well be playing in this weird dance, however it's presenting itself in your life. BUT, you know, it just MIGHT NOT be about YOU!!! I do wish this book went further to include other relationships (such as the one pertinent to my dilemma with an adult step-son), however, it's so well done that you can extrapolate and employ various strategies to help straighten out your head and heart instead of going around miserable all the time wondering my personal mantra of "whadd'id I do?". And I'm a COUNSELOR! You know, you can be just too close to situations in your own life and this book will help you unravel some really common ones. Do yourself a favor. Take a deep breath, relax that knot in your stomach, and get this book. Then read it and get yourself FREE. Yow, it's a subtle thing to get tangled in!
Overwhelmingly Helpful!.......2007-07-19
I bought this book a few months ago. I read it in a single night. It was so amazing; it felt like I was reading about my life and my family members! This book helped me to identify the different types of control and manipulation people use and how to break free from the vicious cycle. I used this book along with "If you had controlling parents" by Dan Neuharth, to get out of the destructive and dysfunctional cycle that my family was in the middle of. I highly recomend both of these books! This particular book works for any controlling and manipulative relationship you might be in---there are lots of stories with examples form real people's lives.
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!.......2007-07-05
A great book, I would love to get in touch with the author to thank her for being part of my emotional healing after leaving an extremely abusive church. Does anybody know her email?
I felt like face to face with Susan, she was right there, present all along the way. Easy to read, easy to understand the principles of blackmailing and warm guiding through the healing process.
I recommend this book for any person who feels weak and frustrated when yielding to pressure. But please, don't read it quickly. Give it time to transform you, chew the information and take time for the exercises!People of the LieThe Road Less Travelled (Arrow New-Age)
Thank you Susan!

good book.......2007-05-09
Very good book. Hit right on the money for what I've experienced in terms of emotional blackmail. Very useful. Just reinforced my decision to exit a relationship for the very reasons this book discusses; enduring persistent pressure from narcisistic partners trying to manipulate you into actions and behaviors for their own interests, with little regard for your own. If you even remotely identify with the title of this book, then it would be worthwhile to read it and then implement the corrective steps to get past the subtle blackmailers in your own life, and stop enabling them to press you into making poor personal decisions.
Emotional Backmail.......2007-01-30
Excellent book on disfunctional relationships. Especially informative when having to deal with Family relations that exhibit the use of FEAR, Obligation or Guilt to achieve their desired results

Good supplement to the Attacking Anxiety program .......2007-08-22
This review is in response to some criticism I have read about Lucinda Bassett and the book FROM PANIC TO POWER. There have been some comments on this page alleging that Lucinda Bassett is only in it for the money and that this book, and the Attacking Anxiety program, do not really offer any help to those dealing with anxiety and depression. As someone who went through the Attacking Anxiety program back in 1994 at age 18 and who is currently reviewing the program, as someone who has read the FROM PANIC TO POWER book (and who received a free autographed copy of LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS from Lucinda Bassett in gratitude for some online mentoring I had offered to others dealing with anxiety and depression), I feel qualified to address the issues of the effectiveness of Lucinda's work. Bottom line: it works. Or, rather, it helps a great deal. But one caveat -- detailed below.
Session 4 of the Attacking Anxiety program says that people who deal with anxiety often have unrealistic expectations. Our high expectations of ourselves, our friends, our lives, often cause an undo amount of anxiety and stress. We can lessen our anxiety by lessening our expectations. "Don't expect so much," Lucinda suggests. Lowering your expectations will make you more thankful for and aware of whatever little progress you make in your journey to recovery. The Attacking Anxiety program is advertised as offering you "complete recovery" from issues concerning anxiety and depression. In the version of the program that I have, it is not until session 15 (the last session) that Lucinda admits, "The truth of the matter is that it simply takes 15 weeks to go through the material in the program. There is no limit to the amount of time it takes you to get over anxiety." Eventually, she admits, "We don't know everything."
The great irony is that you sort of need to use Lucinda's advise against her own advertising slogans. I could paraphrase Lucinda's advise as, "Don't expect the Attacking Anxiety program or the book FROM PANIC TO POWER to live up to its inflated advertisement claims." If you go through the program expecting complete recovery from anxiety (with no relapses or "growth spurts"), if you read FROM PANIC TO POWER expecting a complete recovery, you will come away disappointed. The truth as I feel it now is that if you use the Attacking Anxiety program and FROM PANIC TO POWER as tools in what may be a lifelong recovery strategy and lifestyle, you will definitely see positive results. The advise I'd give to a seeker of recovery is that if you have the means you should get your hands on a copy of the Attacking Anxiety program. It is without a doubt the masterpiece of Lucinda Bassett's oeuvre. The book FROM PANIC TO POWER is in my opinion a mere supplement to the program.
I'll close with a note for the male reader and listener. Going through the Attacking Anxiety program and rereading FROM PANIC TO POWER, I can't help but notice that this is hands-down intended for a female audience. (I first became aware of Lucinda Bassett because of her appearance on Oprah, for example.) This is not to say that what Lucinda teaches won't help males. The material has helped me a great deal as the bare tools of recovery are without gender. But Lucinda Bassett herself mentions that statistically speaking far more women than men deal with anxiety and depression, and Lucinda and apparently most of her staff are female. It therefore is not surprising that much of the material is fashioned toward a female audience. Specifically, many of the stories in FROM PANIC TO POWER deal with issues that women more often than men will face (balancing the life of motherhood and career, etc.). And even in the Attacking Anxiety program, particularly in the group discussions that always take place after Lucinda's introductory monologues, a female perspective abounds. (On Lucinda's audio program Life Without Limits, a good portion of one of the tapes has Lucinda giving a pep talk about how sexy lingerie makes you feel better about yourself. You go, girl!) And sometimes the group discussion portions of the Attacking Anxiety program remind me of episodes of The View (which Lucinda has actually appeared on), and sometimes passages of FROM PANIC TO POWER read like excerpts from Better Homes and Gardens. I wish Lucinda would let a male member of her staff create at least a single-volume program about the issues facing men who are dealing with these issues.
So, to recap, FROM PANIC TO POWER is a good book overall. But it is not the end-all be-all of recovery from anxiety and/or depression. In my opinion it is but a supplement to the Attacking Anxiety program, and some of the stories will most likely be uninteresting to the male reader.
Very impressed.......2007-07-23
I think this book is very good for someone who have had a mild to moderate anxiety in their life like I am. Lucinda was absolutely right about the process of overcoming the anxiety and fear: recognize your anxiety, find a coping technique, and re-expose to the situation that creates that anxiety. I personally think that people who are still suffering from their anxieties are the ones who have not found their suitable coping techniques yet. This book gives you guidelines and ideas to overcoming the anxieties including changing your ways of thinking if they're starting to hurt you. After I finished reading it, I did gain a perspective on my dream and my way of thinking, which I was thankful for the writer.
However, there is one flaw in the book. I don't think this book stresses well enough on coping techniques if you experience anxiety in a particular situation. She told you some ideas, but never really shows you how. Just like another reviewer, I think she's keeping all the good stuff for her program, which is really expensive :)
My Anxiety of Writting this Review!!!.......2007-06-13
6 Stars!!!!From Panic to Power: Hardcover,Copyright1995,Lucinda Bassett:
Where do I begin with a Thriller of a Book where the Book is Great from First Page to the Last Page!! You will feel the Passion of the Author/Founder and stories of Indivduals who have walked in her Shoes!!!
The Author still has to practice positive coping techniques every day. She recommends this to her patients as well. What sets this book apart from other Authors subjects relating to Anxiety Disorder books on the market is ????
Lucinda was there and is doing well right now and as she explained "Some Anxiety is a Good Thing!!!" Most people are Misinformed including myself until reading this Book.
The Author and Founder of Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety explains different types of Anxiety Disorders ranging from very mild to extreme cases. Anxiety is the projecting of "wasted time equals wasted energy" Replacing this Time and Energy with Positive Thoughts over any situation. i.e. Talking in front of others in a Meeting/Presentation?? Another example is "should I take a Walk right now or wait until nobody is around, since my appearance might be questioned??
The Author responds to examples like these and many others throughout the Book and Advantages/Disadvantages for doing different things. There is also a Food Section describing the different types of foods to eat before sleep, or activities/events in general terms. "To Medicate or to not Medicate Section-That is the Question?" Some Doctors are too quick to Prescribe instead of using Foods/Diets/Exercise Plans alone and nothing else or with these plans resulting with reduced Medications.
The Book has a nice flow to its writting and the Author makes you feel like she is talking to you in the same room.
I believe everyone can get some benefit from this book.
I have Learned alot not to dwell, use time limits, and Positive Attitude Replacement benefiting from practicing the Techniques resulting with Great Success!!
Lucinda, Thank You for this Wonderful Book and I cannot wait to begin reading your Second book on "Life without Limits". The Author also has Audio Tapes on these books and Audios on the Techniques.
I would like to Thank all of the Previous Amazon Feedback Reviewers allowing me to make a wonderful decision on purchasing this Book based on your Insightful Feedback Reviews!! Keep up the Great Work!!!!
My Anxiety of Writting this Review is Conquered!!
Different strokes for different folks.......2007-05-27
This is a cognitive-behavioral approach. I think it can help people to examine their negative thinking and learn that their ingrained responses may be partly responsible for their symptoms. But if someone is suffering from really crippling anxiety they should know that drugs are available that will remove the worst of it (sometimes at the cost of their sex lives). But I doubt that drugs or behavior mod provides an enduring solution. Partly due to cost constraints and partly due to the belief that psychology is a form of engineering, many contemporary practitioners are reluctant to admit that life is scary and emotional problems are often too complex for textbook solutions. Only now, after a hundred years, has psychology proudly announced the "finding" that loving family relationships are good for your mental health. Duh!!!! Having people you love and trust is certainly therapeutic, as is talking about things with a therapist who is willing to go into some depth. I also think religious faith can be helpful to people who feel they are worthless for one reason or another. People with a fear of public speaking should consider Toastmasters or a similar organization, since public speaking is a really important skill.
Suffered for 30 years.......2007-04-24
If you have suffered for as long as I, you know that the threat of having anxiety/panic attacks is a real pain. This book opened my eyes to the common feelings of others suffering the same trials. I would recommend combining it with other books---by no means is it all-inclusive, but trust me: it's a great start. (I might recommend The Anxiety Cure by DuPont, et al, and Don't Panic by Ried Wilson. There are numerous choices available to help you find strategies)
I've had 30 YEARS of intermittent anxiety attacks, with the past year having been riddled with attacks. I have always been terrified of medicine, and sought cognitive therapy...but still felt as if I must be the only person alive with the particular thoughts and feelings I've had. As soon, as I read this book, I began to feel much more at ease. I felt okay about myself and my ability to overcome-and I am doing very well. If you think you're going over the edge and that you will never feel better, please read this book. We are not alone-and we don't have to be afraid of having another attack!

Disappointed.......2007-08-08
After reading the other reviews of this book I was really looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, I found the book rather superficial and without much meaningful content. Some of the really important ideas, such as being able to welcome difficulties in life, the author just skims over. After reading the book, I felt that I was actual more in tune than the author herself without dedicating years on reflection and buddhist practice.
I don't think this book could change anyone life's although it may get someone interested in learning more about meditation and mental reflection.
Appealing, honest, brave.......2007-07-30
This is an excellent book on Buddhism that weaves Susan's own stories and challenges into the fabric of a meditation practice.
I found it accessible, straightforward, and compelling.
Wonderful intro to Buddhism.......2007-07-13
Susan Piver's book is a wonderful introduction to Buddhism for the beginner. She explains the basic meditations of Buddhist practice with a fresh, light approach. Many Buddhist meditation texts are bogged down in background, and she skips the unnecessary details to cut to the chase. She is able to use references to the everyday situations most people encounter, and apply principles in the book.
This is my "go-to" book for my practice and I highly recommend it.
Coming in to yourself.......2007-04-28
When I read the title of this book I was a little taken aback--Afraid of my own life? Could I be? But Piver addresses issues and fears that are common themes in life--fears that are part of the human experience--and shows us in a methodically, and linear way, how to acknowledge and then diffuse those fears, by facing them head on. She disects some basic ideas in a very clear, direct, friendly and accessible way. It is as though Ms. Piver is sitting down to a cup of tea with you, to be that friend that listens and affirms all the crappy stuff that can happen to us, but then goes on to show us that by using the ancient practice of meditiation, ultimately, we can be ok with it. Or perhaps more accurately, it can be ok with us.
The meditation instructions are clear, specific and very accessible--and the 7 day meditation program looks like a great way take a committed practice of meditation to the next level. I'll say, it has inspired ME to get my butt to the cushion more, since reading the book.

So much more.......2007-08-13
Well, I tell you. I bought this book thinking that it will be just another book to give me some basic advice on overcoming fear. It did that and so much more. It explained how to handle fear from a biblical sense. Not only did Marcos give you the actual scriptures for you to reference yourself but his interpretations were relatable to everyone. I read it from start to finish. Great book!

Wonderful and filling!.......2007-05-19
I just finished treatment....this book was my touchstone! It is so filled with hope and love. I loved it. It focused me on Christ and it helped me dig into my faith.
Incredible Book.......2007-02-08
Praying Through Cancer totally changed my life. This book is powerful, but simple. When people are going thru cancer treatment their brain is overwhelmed with "stuff." This powerful book prioritizes this "stuff" and makes the journey very amazing.
I bought books and shared them with other cancer survivors and they were all equally moved by the power of this book.
Highly recommended!
Encouragement and hope.......2007-01-26
I am a 37 year old that has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. A good friend of mine found this book and gave it to me. I can't begin to tell you how comforted I feel while reading through these pages. God is speaking to me through these words and whispering that He is right here with me on this journey. I still have my moments when I feel scared, but when they hit, I reach for "Praying Though Cancer" and in moments I feel His presence and all of the comforting words of women who have been through this before me. God Bless you for such a beautiful book!

When Your Past Is Hurting Your Present.......2005-10-21
I have been searching for a Christian author that has written a book on "Forgiveness" that is balanced and non-judgmental...this book is the best I have ever come across. I truly believe the author was moved along in the Holy Spirit as she wrote much or all of this book. It comes to grips with childhood abuse, other abuse, neglect, events others may have caused harm to us and those we have caused to ourselves. The book is very Scriptural sound and can help anyone with the problem of overcoming forgiveness. It teaches "forgiveness" whether it is in the past and is now causing us problems or it is something in our adult years we need to learn how to forgive and move on or it is learning how to forgive of ourselves! If you are truly searching for a Biblical Foundational book on "Forgiveness", this is it!
Never realized how much you were still hurting...now you can get over it for good........2005-09-22
AMAZING BOOK!!!!! We know that we are suppose to "forgive, forget and move on" but sometimes this is much easier said than done. We don't realize how much hurt we still hold onto and how much it is hurting us in many ways of our lives. Sue helps bring to the forefront what we have tried to unsuccessfully bury and helps us lay it to rest once and for all, deepening our faith and helping us realize that our life can be GREAT no matter what has happened in the past. Until we forgive and forget we cannot move on - Sue walks us through how to apply this to our personal lives. This book is a must read even if you think you have "moved on". Sue's passion and zeal for a better life is contagious.
"Releasing the Past -- So Easy When You Know How"!.......2005-09-19
"W.O.W." -- "Write on Woman"! This certainly is a book in due season. Who doesn't have a past that affects them, in the present, to some degree? Sue Augustine is endearingly transparent, sharing her own past struggles as she evolves into the beautiful, strong & vibrant woman she is today. She gently draws you into own personal realm and envelopes you with caring, sharing and encouragement. It feels like Sue is right there beside you becoming your own personal strategist and helping you to implement the 21 Steps. She guides you through the pages, helping you to face past issues and, where necessary, gives permission to simply "let go". -- a very freeing and uplifting journey. This book is all-encompassing and not easily put down once started. I'll certainly recommend it hightly to others as a "must-read" and look forward to future releases with great anticipation.
'Betcha' won't just read it once!.......2005-08-16
Whether you are trying to overcome relatively small hurts from yesterday or to hurdle major stumbling blocks from decades past, you've found the right book. This is not just another self-help resource; it is a companion. Sue Augustine seems to jump out of the pages and grab you by the hand like a friend who is eager to share something very exciting. Not only does she help point you in the direction of the truths that will set you free, but Sue also walks along with you as she shares her own personal experiences and struggles. Although taking an honest look at ourselves can sometimes reveal things that are tough to swallow, Sue's warmth, humor, and sincere desire to help others flow through to provide that "spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down". It is very easy to see why she is a popular motivational speaker because her enthusiasm is infectious - even in print!
A Must-Read for Getting Past Your Past!.......2005-08-11
Sue Augustine writes straight from her heart and touches yours with her words. She is one who has has "been there" and can speak to this subject from personal experience. She knows what it's like to have a broken heart and feel hopeless, and because she's overcome tremendous challenges, she's able to share powerful "how-to's" with the reader. The book will take you from where you are today to where you only dreamed you could go. Your life will never be the same!

"In this helpful book, Dr. Sapadin does not take a one-size-fits- all approach to the multifaceted experience of fear. I will be recommending this book to my clients, friends and all those who allow fear to inhibit their lives."

An eight-step program that gives readers the tools to overcome fear
This engaging and illuminating self-help book will help readers understand the five styles of fear, showing how these styles affect how we think, speak, act, and live. A fearful, anxious lifestyle can restrict our activities, constrict our thinking, limit our choices, and minimize our enjoyment without making life any safer. Dr. Linda Sapadin offers a prescriptive eight-step program for change, helping readers get past their fears and feel more in control of their lives. She includes helpful, real-life stories of her work with clients.
Linda Sapadin, PhD (Valley Stream, NY), is a clinical psychologist and the author of It's About Time: The Six Styles of Procrastination and How to Overcome Them. Scared of Fear?.......2004-07-22
It's been almost three years since September 11, 2001, and an already frightening world has become even scarier. Was, threat, politics, economic change, disease ?? what NEXT will there be to fear? In light of all this, I wonder why LInda Sapadin's excellent and sensible "Master Your Fears : How to Triumph Over Your Worries and Get On with Your Life" has not received more attention.
Her step-by-step prescriptions for living in these scary times, tailored to individual personality types, seem to me to be just what we need. Rather than exacerbate fear by enumerating what there is to be afraid of, Dr. Sapadin seems to ratify FDR's famous aphorism, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." And she tells us how to "de-scare-ify" life ?? IF we follow through on her programs.
I know it helped me. And I believe it will help others. Don't be afraid. Read it!
The power to face the world..........2004-04-26
Dr. Sapadin's book is a very practical guide to taming the fears which hinder our lives each and every day. Because we live in a world where violent images and frightening statistics inform our daily lives, it is often hard to wake up and face the world without the burden of fear. Dr. Sapadin helps her readers navigate this powerful and often unpredictable emotion, dealing with the smallest worries to the most paralyzing anxieties. She writes in a friendly and approachable style, and she often draws on personal experience. I love the stories she shares about her family; they are funny, poignant, and wonderful teaching tools, especially for a layman like myself. I highly recommend this book!

The book helped me a lot!.......2004-07-08
This is a wonderful book! It really helped me a lot! I learned how to stop worrying about the big and little things in my life and how to trust God for them. The author shares many areas that women tend to worry about. She shares her own personal experiences with worry and fear and heart wrenching stories from her own life and how she conquered worry and fear and learned to turn everything over to God and trust Him more. I have purchased many copies of this book and have given them to all of my friends! It's a must have for your personal library!
Praise, Comfort, Encouragement, Peace.......2003-02-27
My sister-in-law gave this book to me when I was going through my divorce three years ago. This book, like no other, has brought me closer to God than anything else I have read. I was worried and scared, but Cheri has brought the Scriptures to life for me - they speak to all of us! - and helped me through a difficult time, and continues to do so. I have purchased copies for my friends who are going through rough times, or even just those who are discouraged at life in general. "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord... plans to give you hope and a future. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:11, 13 If that isn't comforting, I don't know what is. Praise God!!!
