Book Description

Paul Artisan, P.I. is a new version of an old breed -- a righter of wrongs, someone driven to get to the bottom of things. Too bad his usual cases are of the boring malpractice and fraud variety. Until now. His new gig turns on the disappearance of one of a pair of twins, adult scions of a rich but tragedy-prone family. The missing twin -- a charismatic poster-boy for irresponsibility -- has spent his life daring people to hate him, punishing himself endlessly for his screw-ups and misdeeds. The other twin -- Artisan's client -- is dutiful and resentful in equal measure, bewildered that his "other half" could have turned out so badly, and wracked by guilt at his inability to reform him. He has a more practical reason, as well, for wanting his brother found: their crazy father, in failing health and with guilty secrets of his own, will not divide the family fortune until both siblings are accounted for. But it isn't just a fortune that's at stake here. Truth itself is up for grabs, as the detective's discoveries seem to challenge everything we think we know about identity, and human nature, and family. As Artisan journeys across the globe to track down the bad twin, he seems to have moved into a mirror-world where friends and enemies have a way of looking very much alike. The P.I. may have his long-awaited chance to put his courage and ideals to the test, but if he doesn't get to the bottom of this case soon, it could very well cost him his life. Troup's long-awaited Bad Twin is a suspenseful novel that touches on many powerful themes, including the consequence of vengeance, the power of redemption, and where to turn when all seems lost.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2007-07-20

Although competently written, this book is not a very good stand-alone, nor does it offer any clue or value for the fans of LOST.

3 out of 5 stars Nice plot - abrupt ending.......2007-07-12

Bad Twin is a well written beach-read type novel. The author does a nice job of keeping it a page turner, as there were many chapter where I just couldnt seem to put it down. However, I was less than pleased with the way it ended. The resolving of the plot happened way too quickly in the last 4 pages of the book and just didnt seem to flow with the tempo of the rest of the story. Not bad though overall - some interesting LOST references too.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Mystery Based Only on Its Own Merits.......2007-05-14

As long as you don't go into reading BAD TWIN thinking you're going to solve the mysteries of the hit television show Lost, then you should be okay. BAD TWIN, on its own, is an intriguing mystery featuring twin brothers--one a bigwig in the family business, the other a ne're-do-well who has gone missing.

Oh, sure, there are a few references in the actual storyline to make you go "hmmm"--the philosopher John Locke, a trip to Australia aboard an Oceanic flight, the totally hyped numbers showing up as the twin's birthday, and the family name of Widmore. But besides those few basic tidbits, this book won't tell you squat. It really has nothing to do with Lost.

On its own merits, though, it's an engaging mystery that I read in one day, and if Gary Troup was an actual person (which he isn't), and had actually written anything else besides BAD TWIN (which he hasn't), I wouldn't hesitate to read it.

3 out of 5 stars Quick read, but kinda "flat".......2007-05-11

This book was short and I got it used (always a good way to go when you are unsure about a book). It wasn't necessarily a bad investment, but the book wasn't all that great either. If I had the choice, I would probably have rated it a 2-1/2 stars or maybe even 2 stars.

Plot:
Paul Artisan, a private detective, is hired by a rich family to find a wayward son. In the process, he discovers that there are quite a few secrets held by this family that will help lead to the recovery of the missing son.

Good:
There were some great points to the book. I liked Paul and Manny's relationship (something you just don't see between two generations anymore). I also took enjoyment of seeing the Hanso Foundation mentioned (though how would they have let Gary Troup put them in a fictional book is beyond me). Other tidbits from the LOST show were interesting but not essential (which was upsetting).

Bad:
However, the story was flat. The traveling across the world to find the son gets old and feels contrived and more than a little like those connect-the-dots puzzles you do as a child. I had a hard time picturing straight laced, "I-want-to-find-the-truth" Paul with the Paul reminiscing about taking marijuana. The romance between Paul and Pru, which might have made sense if given more time, was rushed. For someone who hasn't had sex apparently in a long time, the thought is always on his mind and apparently every woman he has contact with. I am shocked at how many women are like "I wish I made love to you" after a thirty minute interview. The older son uses more gutter language than he really should (while it is completely absent from the younger). And some of the literary references feel forced (like the author felt he should allude to something later).

Dialogue/Sexual Situations/Violence:
F-word gets quite a work out in this book by pretty much everyone Paul gets in contact with. Sh**, d***, h***, God's name are also frequent. Paul pretty much wants to have sex with any woman he meets (no matter how long or short that is) and does have sex (moderately graphic) with Pru. It is suggested that Xander had a relationship with his brother's wife. The step-mom is having an affair. Violence includes two deaths and several attempted murders.

Overall:
For LOSTies (like myself), this is interesting but not necessary. Do what I did and buy it used. I find it difficult to believe that someone like Sawyer who is obviously well-read (i.e. Of Mice and Men) would enjoy something this mediocre and amatuerish.

5 out of 5 stars Laurence Shames at his best!.......2007-04-19

I did not plan on reading this novel. It seemed to be nothing more then another way to cash in on the franchise. Then I discovered who the author really is. Laurence Shames, writer of many quirky mystery novels taking place in Key West, is a pure joy. I can't believe any one thought that Stephen King had written this. Three key clues should have caught anyone familiar with Shames' earlier novels. Scenes in Key West, an old man with an old dog with wise advice, and an actual line taken from an earlier novel's title (The Naked Detective).

Quirky characters and settings make for an excellent book for a weekend at the beach. The mentioning of elements from Lost just add to the fun.

Book Description

Eric Schaeffer has always believed that when the time was right and he was ready that he would find the Big One (an intelligent, sexy, loving wife).
But his last girlfriend said no to his proposal, and since then he hasn’t met anyone he wanted to have a second date with. This is a wild, sometimes raunchy, sometimes poignant, and always honest account of a semi-famous man’s attempts at love.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Still a narcissist.......2007-09-20

Ever wonder why recovering alcoholics and drug-addicts are so often still happy to remain raging narcissists? Here's another shining example of one of them. I think it's high time for a thirteenth step in the Program.

1 out of 5 stars Eric Schaeffer gives yoga a bad name.......2007-09-03

This has to be the worst book I've read since Prozac Nation. Same narcissistic logorrhea. Pretends to be honest with himself, but it's amazing how blind he remains throughout. I have enough confidence in yoga to think if he keeps practicing he might get there, but I found nothing redemptive in 317 pages. He doesn't even like himself enough to breathe between dates. He's the guy you run from, believe me.

A much better read, and real self honesty, though not a great book either, is Sex, Love, and Dharma. This guy hasn't found the one either, but he's a LOT closer, and his path seems way more genuine.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-08-31

This book had my attention from beginning until the end. It was hilarious, thought provoking, real, and emotionally insightful. Eric has obviously evolved such that he is comfortable revealing those inner most thoughts and feelings which most of us would rather die than verbalize to another person. I will encourage all of my friends.....who strive for self awareness......to take this journey.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, sweet, insane, warm, in your face, and polarizing.......2007-08-28

I am surprised at the amount of anger this book has received. Eric Schaeffer is opening showing his entire life, good and bad, under a brilliant and well written light. You don't have to like him or respect his choices, but the fearlessness of his honesty is inspiring.

Is his life for everyone? No, but the point of the book isn't Mr. Schaeffer telling the world it would be better if only it was entirely like him. If fact he starts the book saying that's not the case.

The sometimes hilarious, sometimes frustrating choices he makes can be polorizing, but I don't think it deserves the spite some people are giving it.

And I don't think he gives a bad name to Yoga, I think he gives a real quality to it. Nobody is perfect all the time. Nobody is anything all the time. We just strive to be the best person we can be in singular moments of our lives. That is what Eric Schaeffer is trying to do, and I applaud him for it.

1 out of 5 stars A Self Review.......2007-08-23

Like all arrogant and delusional men, I've always believed that when I was ready, I could easily land a smart, funny, sexy, warm, loving wife. "When you build it, she will come." That's what I've been told all my life by my mommy, and she is very objective. "The girls are just going to line up when you say the word." Well, I'm ready. I've made several crappy movies that have been unanimously hated by critics and audiences everywhere. That's quite an accomplishment, wouldn't you say? After all, there are a lot of commercial movies that get bad reviews, and a lot of well-reviewed movies that do terribly in the box office, but both critics and audiences agree that my films suck.

All this and I can't even meet someone who will put up with my innocent questions on the first date (have you ever been raped by your father?), or who are attracted by my candor ("nice breasts"--also on the first date), or who feel sorry enough for desperate little me to marry me. There's no justice in this world.

I fooled my last girlfriend for quite some time, but in the end she saw the light and left me on my knee with a ring in my hands and tears in my eyes. Since then I've tried speed dating, Yentas, blind dates, Internet dating, meeting girls at the gym and yoga, on the subway and on the street. Actresses, models, lawyers, social workers, teachers, comediennes, even hookers, special massage girls and dominatrixes and nothing! I know I reek of desperation, but it's an attractive scent! Seriously. Just come near me and sniff me. I'll do the same with you.

I simply cannot believe I'm still single at 45. This is my story. Just a regular unattractive moron looking for love and unable to find it... for the rest of my life.

Book Description

Like a car alarm, bagpipe music, or a doorbell ringing in the middle of the night, hearing this all-new audio edition of The Bad Beginning will only upset you. This unique multi-voice recording brings the first book in Lemony Snicket's alarming A Series of Unfortunate Events to such terrible life that no one should really have to experience it. Unless you have an ear for such ghastly details as a tragic fire, a nefarious villain, itchy clothing, and cold porridge for breakfast, all narrated in chilly detail by the distinguished, and disturbed, Tim Curry with a team of talented readers, you would be better off listening to something else.

Featuring Tim Curry

5 out of 5 stars So Fun!.......2006-12-03

This recording is so fun! It has sound effects and different voices for each character. It makes it seem like you are watching a movie in your mind. I think kids would really enjoy this version, I sure did!

5 out of 5 stars "Scream and Run Away".......2006-06-21

This is a review mainly of the unabridged recording of "The Bad Beginning" read by Tim Curry, with an interview of Lemony Snicket by Leonard C. Marcus. And the song "Scream and Run Away preformed by the Gothic Archies. This is also a review of the hardback book .

Initial listening of this book brought horror and disgust (which in this case means repugnance.) Determined to finish the story despite the author's constant warnings, I must say that I became enamored of his style.

There are several pluses to listening to the recording. The pace of the recording helps keep you going when you would have set the book aside. The absence of the books illustrations by Bret Helquist allowed you to imagine a more sinister Count Olaf and a cuter, yet with a tad of tomboy, Violet. Now the significant plus is the unmistakable voice of Tim Curry of "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Oscar" (1991 as Dr. Poole) fame. His interpretation of the voices gave just as much panache to the characters as Lemony's writing.

Not in the book, but as additions to the recording are two significant items that help with the understanding of the story, where it came from and where it is going. First is an interview with the author. It covers many of the standard questions asked in an interview; the answers and the communication style is some what unique and a little over the top. Also there is a recording of a song that Mr. Snicket says is played by the Baudelaire memorial orchestra; I have since found that it was realy preformed by the Gothic Archies, written by Gay and Loud.

I do not want to give away the plot however I can tell you that at one point they are forced to eat "boiled chicken, boiled, potatoes and `blanched'- here means `boiled'- string beans"

5 out of 5 stars Actually, a great beginning!.......2005-08-04

I downloaded this book from Audible. My sons and I listened to it in the car and finished the whole thing in one day. When we went on errands, they even asked if they could stay in the car and listen while I did what I had to do.

We loved it!! It was silly, educational, and entertaining all at once, with suspense thrown in. The boys' favorite character is Sunny, while I rather like Violet.

Especially engaging was the multicast recording. We have since missed this in the subsequent Lemony Snicket audiobooks.

I want to warn those who have seen the SOUE film: Expect something different in the books. The film combined three books, and not very well. The books have much more substance.

I have a couple of cult TV shows I keep in mind for when I encounter books like this. If they get them right, I'm impressed. Here, the info is so wrong, it's not even funny. What use is that? I can make up things on my own.

My husband catches me reading BAD TV from time to time and he says "Your reading that AGAIN?????" Maybe he should try reading it a first time! If he did he would know that BAD TV is damn funny stuff. I pride myself on being a '70s & '80s fanatic....but Craig Nelson has me beat. (Thats Craig Nelson....not Craig T. Nelson the guy who was on COACH, hahaha)He seems to have been around since the day TV was invented because he knows of every bad show ever made. Not only shows but TV movies and much much more. This is MUST HAVE if you collect cult movies like SATANS SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, DAWN PORTAIT OF A TEENAGE RUNAWAY and BAD RONALD. This book even mentions a few you might have missed or somehow forgotten about!
Well...anyway.....I gave this book the honor of being THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ on my website last year and I'm sure it will get the honor again this year. If you havent read it yet and like to laugh...GET A COPY NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars A thorough, fascinating, and supremely funny look at TV.......2002-01-15

I really wish a new edition of this book would come out. Nelson's scathing commentary is hilarious, and, as if there needed to be more, he also includes interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits, serious commentary on the role of television in society, TV curses, and cheeky lists of what popular shows reveal about our secret longings and beliefs ("There's nothing as much fun as watching people reveal some deep, horrible secret").

I only caught one small error: in the music video section, Nelson says that "oregato" (should be "arigato") means "hello." It means "thank you." Fans of Styx will be appalled, but nobody else should care.

Highly recommended for television fans and MSTies, and anyone else who wants a good laugh.

When I first saw this book at the library the name and the cover of the book kind of looked silly so I got it. I wasn't expecting the book to be anything great and it wasn't. It wasn't really scary, but it was still worth reading. Anyways, this book is about a boy named Tim who loves magic. His favorite magician is Amazo and someday Tim wants to be a magician just like him. In the book Tim gets a ticket to go see an Amazo show, but it isn't until ten at night and his parents won't let him go. Tim really wanted to go see the show so he sneaks out at night with his sister to go see it. At the show Tim gets to talk to Amazo and he turns out to be mean, so Tim decides to steal his bag of magic tricks. This book isn't scary and nothing really that exciting happens until about the end of the book. Even though this book wasn't the best goosebumps in the series you should still definitely read it.

When they got to the club that Amaz-O was perfoming at called midnight mansion, they tell the gards that their parents were parking and be in soon. O their way in, Amaz-O wisperd in tim's ear, "i'm going to use you in my final act." Amaz-O does some pritty amazing tricks and he gets to his final trick. He says that he will pick someone out of the audience to help him with his final trick. Tim gets picked to go up on stage. Tim gets put in a magic box and Amaz-O makes him dissapear. Amaz-O dodnt realy make Tim dissapear, he just made Tim fall in to the bastment . While in the basement he heard everyone leave.

bad hare day is another one of my favorites. first, i liked all the different magic tricks, like the multiplying red balls and hissing snakes. The story is about Tim, a boy who wants to be a magician. When he sees Amaz-O, his most favorite magician, he gets trapped in a room after performing a dissapearing act. When he gets out, he steals Amaz-O's box of tricks, but he doesn't know what kind of tricks are in there! Youll have to read the book to see if Tim is really a good magician.
