What a wonderful resource! Terrific information that helped us plan - and enjoy a wonderful trip.

3 out of 5 stars A little ponderous for my taste.......2007-09-12

This book contains a ton of information. However, it's very "text-booky". I found it hard to stay engaged while reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Alaskan Cruise.......2007-09-03

My business is travel and many of my clients enjoy cruising. This book was very helpful is assisting me with my clients in planning their Alaskan Vacations. My family and I do plan to go to Alaska in the near future, sounds like an exciting vacation!

3 out of 5 stars A little dry.......2007-06-26

The map is good, but overall, I didn't find the book very engaging -- a little bit dry.

4 out of 5 stars Great Research for a Cruise.......2007-04-05

If you are planning an Alaskan Cruise this is the book to get. I wish I'd had it before signing up for the cruise - I would have picked one that stopped at some of the cities that our cruise won't be stopping at. The book does a great job of talking about cruises in general without giving too much attention to any one cruise line. The book was real handy in choosing which shore excursions to take. If you're taking a cruise to Alaska, this book is much more handy than the Eyewitness Guide Book for Alaska which only covers on-land sightseeing.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Get It!.......2007-07-16

My husband and I currently own a CS30 that we race and cruise on the Chesapeake Bay. We have been seriously considering moving up to a 37-40 ft cruiser. We bought this book (among several others) to prepare for cruising. It is fantastic. He covers every topic imaginable in an easy to digest format. It is a resource you don't want to be without!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for sailing cruisers.......2007-01-22

I wish I had bought this book before I bought my newest old boat - my personal survey would have been much more effective.

This book covers so much, so well. Mr. Calder obviously not only has the knowledge but the motivation to really think about what should go into each area. He covers choosing, maintaining, upgrading, and cruising a boat to just the right degree that if you had no other resources, this book would usually suffice. And he does this in such a relatively small book.

3 out of 5 stars mostly about calder's boat.......2006-12-11

this is book about cruising in a sailboat but is mostly filled with pictures and references to his sailboat and what a great boat it is. i wanted a book about cruising after you have a boat.

4 out of 5 stars Good manual and info on sailing.......2006-12-11

Well thought out and good graphics/photos. Solid marine related information and guide. A good book for the sail oriented seamen.

5 out of 5 stars The Cruising Handbook is the reference manual to have.......2006-10-29

For cruising, Nigel Calder's book is the one that offers the most good information about a variety of cruising-related subjects. If I had to choose to keep only couple of books for boating, it would be this and Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship. This Cruising Handbook is especially geared for sailboats and covers all boat systems and the issues you are likely to encounter.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars World Cruising Routes.......2007-07-26

When planning a circumnavigation one has three choices: 1) Do not plan and accept the extreme dangers of circumnavigation; 2) take a year or more and plan using all available nautical publications, charts, electronic navigation systems; and 3) read and use the outstanding information provided in "World Cruising Routes." This publication will save you time and more important provide excellent tips for short and long passages across the oceans of the world. Cornell has taken the time to consolidate information and plot the important way-points for us.

The most important advice given is the timing of transits. Cornell identifies the risks and the pleasures of circumnavition and avoiding weather disasters. Thanks to Mr. Cornell, sailors who venture forth on the oceans will be safer and more comfortable at sea.

5 out of 5 stars Bible of cruising.......2007-05-30

This book is very complet and every sailor defenetly needs to have.

4 out of 5 stars Sail Voyage Planing.......2007-01-11

It's a book that is a must have for any voyage. I wish the author would have included more maps but still a have to have book.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the armchair cruiser.......2001-06-20

I would someday like to cruise around the world, and I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the possible routes so that I could make some preliminary plans. I'm sure it will come in handy in a few years, but for now, it's overwhelming.

I think this information would be best presented as an interactive CD-ROM. Click on a starting point, click on several destinations, and the software tells you when you should start the trip, how long it would take, whether you need to alter the route, etc. If someone knows of such a program, please pass along the info.

5 out of 5 stars World Cruising Routes.......2001-02-17

An absolute necessity for any small yacht going to sea. It is logically compiled and written. Jimmy Cornell has written a book that is exactly what every sailor needs...guidance in getting from port a to port b efficiently, safely, and with the best possible winds and weather.

2 out of 5 stars The Complete Rigger's Apprentice: Tools and Techniques for Modern and Traditional Rigging.......2006-11-10

to basic ok for sailboats not much for other rigging

3 out of 5 stars Good book but missing key information.......2006-02-21

This book has LOTS of really good information. But it is missing some significant stuff, Brion. PLEASE PLEASE do another addition and include SOME information about the following:

1. Chainplates. Nothing. How is a proper chainplate shaped, mounted, doubled, etc? Where do they go? What should you consider when changing from single boomking backstay to double backstays?

2. Bowsprits. Hardly a word. How is a proper bowsprit mounted? What kind of materials are appropriate for a bobstay? etc.

3. Stemheads. Hardly a word. Come on, what good is a rig if it isn't mounted to something????

4. Mast steps. The rig seems to float in air with this book, and no proper consideration is given to how it MOUNTS TO THE BOAT.

Other than that, it is a great book. Lots of good info, formulas, etc. Lots of great knots, lots of funny quips, good explanation of how single and double spreader rigs are stayed and shrouded.

But most of us also have boats to go along with our rigs, and it would be nice to have a WHOLE CHAPTER on how the rig connects to the boat, because many of us need to maintain, repair, and improve that part of the rig as well.

Good book, but it is incomplete as currently published.

5 out of 5 stars The Thoughts of a REAL RIGGER.......2004-06-19

As a rigger myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most informative and useful for my trade. However, there was little or no mention of brews OR 3 leets - surely this is an integral part of being a RIGGER? Also, there is only one rigger.

Me!

Oh, and Ryan Jendoubi.

5 out of 5 stars The only thing like it for traditional craft.......2003-12-04

Brion Toss has become "da man" in modern rigging in many ways, and a lot of that is attributable to this great book. It's a big, thick thing, loaded with information, not all of it easily absorbed on the first read. It's meant to give you a firm grounding in what rigging is, what it does, and how to inspect and maintain your own rig, how to adjust it, how to replace worn sections. Will it tell you everything you need to know to design a rig from the ground up on a serious racing yacht? Heck, no. It isn't meant to. What this book does is give you the tools you need to approach your own rig without fear and trembling - to realize that, after all, it's just a bunch of parts, and that you can comprehend and work with those parts, understand their roles, and get the most from your boat. Will you be forever independant of professional riggers? Probably not. But it goes a long way toward making that a realizable goal, if you apply yourself. And it should be known that this book is especially strong on traditional rigs, the more traditional the better. You'll learn how to worm, parcel, and serve, how to lace deadeyes, and why galvanized is great and stainless isn't stainless. And if that last sentence frightens you, you're probably not in the intended demographic. Rod rigging and carbon fiber masts are mentioned, at best, in passing, and largely for comic relief. Keep that in mind. Makes an absolutely perfect companion to Marino's "Sailmaker's Apprentice."

2 out of 5 stars A Simple Compilation of Rigging technique.......2002-08-24

THE COMPLETE RIGGER'S APPRENTICE by Mr. Brion Toss is a no-brainer simple compilation of standard rigging technique. Most of which can be found by reading past editions of old rigging manuals and from the writings of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, or from company product manuals. Nothing new or original has been done in this work; and the 'Compilation' of any subject matter has always been considered a cheap way of getting published.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All most of us need to know on sail & rig tuning.......2007-05-30

When it comes to sail & rig tuning I think it is important not to complicate things too much and write 3 exceptions for every rule. This book gives clear advice on the biggest issues in sail & rig trim and illustrates them as well.
Very good book to get the most out of your boat!

4 out of 5 stars Racing or Cruising; this is stuff you NEED to know.......2006-05-29

Good physics, good illustrations, good explanations mean that you will have the intellectual tools to maximize your sail power. That will mean minutes in a race, and hours or days on a passage...as well as the safety of a well tuned rig. A must read for anyone powered by sail.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent on tuning, not so good on engineering........2005-06-21

I brought this book to check the rigging on a boat that I want to build.
The diagrams are very clear and the book is concise and easy to read.
While this book was helpful it was not really what I was after.
I see this book being great for those sailors who want to win races.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Rigging Out There.......2004-05-11

There is nothing more frighten then a mast coming down at sea. Just the mere thought of it is enough to have a lot of cruising sailors pouring pockets full of money into the hands of riggers up and down the island chain. However rigging isn't that hard, heck I even know a couple guys who decided overnight to be riggers. They hung up their shingles and we started genuflecting before them as if they were the font of all knowledge. Well before you reach your hand out for that holy water, maybe you should check out this very fine book. It will educate you into the black art of rigging a sailboat. You'll know, without consulting that expert, when to replace that turnbuckle or wire. You'll learn how to tune your rig yourself and, need I say it, you'll probably save enough money to pay for that new laptop you've had your eye on.

5 out of 5 stars Great Explainations and Illustrations.......2002-09-03

This is my favorite book on sail trim. It not only explains what to do, but why to do it. It is organized well and has great illustations. It is not just for novices, but has information that more experienced sailors will find useful. For example, it has pages with illustrations showing the comparative (in percentages) sail drafts to use for various winds strengths and conditions.

    1 out of 5 stars Over $150 for a book?!?.......2007-09-11

Clearly this book is intended only for libraries. The absurd price is a brutal assessment of the publishing world of the book's potential to sell to a general public. If they had expected it to sell more widely, they would have priced it differently. So this is a challenge to all those who rate this book highly: what have the publishers missed, and can you produce sales statistics that prove them wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about catamaran sailing.......2007-08-05

This is the book that I had hoped Chris White's "The Cruising Multihull" would be when I bought it. Chris White's book was rather a disappointment, however (although good in its own way) but this book definitely hit the spot!

In some ways this is a bit of an odd book. Firstly it's strangely large (US Letter sized, kind of like A4) so it's not exactly a comfortable read in a small space. The cover (particularly the back) is pretty cheesy for a book published in 1992, the arrangement inside is sometimes a bit haphazard (with weird font changes in some of the page headers, for example) and the divisions into Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3 would be far more sensibly termed Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. An edit for grammar errors would have been good too (the dreaded grocer's apostrophe makes a regular appearance).

But all that's pretty unimportant when you open the book randomly and start reading. Anywhere. As soon as you start you're sucked in. Charles Kanter has a great way with his writing, you get the impression you're sitting on a boat pootling along and he's just chatting to you generally about sailing. His writing style is very personal with large numbers of anecdotes from his years as a catamaran owner, tester, delivery skipper and surveyor. There are some photographs and some pictures throughout, generally not that brilliant, but the prose is excellent and keeps you reading.

There is some repetition in the arrangement of the book (the galley/fridge arrangement is mentioned in two places, as are some other aspects) and in fact the divisions between specific sections aren't always clear, but somehow this doesn't seem to matter, you're always going to want to read the whole thing anyway. Some of his anecdotes are repeated too but, again, that would probably happen in a conversation with a person and that's what this book feels like.

What was particularly good about the book was that he gives you an idea of what it's like to actually sail a catamaran, how it feels, what you should do differently to monohull sailing. That's what I wanted from Chris White's book (and didn't really get). This book is also mostly about catamarans (he has a short section on trimarans at the end and mentions them periodically in the main text) and it's five years more recent than Chris White's book too.

There's the obligatory section on safety (that cats are safer to sail than monos, the argument that continues today amongst the monohull community) and it's well written. Yes, all boats are dangerous in their own way as sailing can be a dangerous sport, but the explanations of the differences between monohulls and cats was excellently explained. As a slightly nervous sailor about to switch from a mono to a cat I lapped this all up.

Book 3 (or Part 3!) lists 'current' catamarans in production and then ones out of production - or at least some of them, ones that Charles Kanter has sailed and surveyed. This section is by no means exhaustive; you might find your cat/intended cat in here, you might not. I did, and it got a good write-up, but this section is very much his opinions and views and it's hard to judge one cat against another in it. It's clear which ones he doesn't like (e.g. Catana) and ones he does (e.g. Gemini) but I imagine his opinion is more valid than most as he has so much experience. He also has experience in older boats which are likely to be more in the price ranges of a lot of people - he's a big fan of Hirondelles, for example.

Now one thing you'll discover fairly early on is that Mr Kanter thinks one of the most important things on your cat is... the rubbing strip. Not exactly the priority of most people but something he thinks is vital. As is a toe-rail. This is because the book is written for the normal cruiser (not racer), someone who's going to be tying up to docks more than racing across oceans. As he points out, most boats spend 90% or more of their time in dock, so he pays significant attention to how a boat behaves in the dock (for example his consideration of the design flaw of windows angled badly so they turn the inside into a sauna). He's writing from a US perspective where shallow draught is very important (not such a big deal around the coast of the UK) so he prefers boats with centreboards/daggerboards than LAR keels and he's very interested in decent fridges (at one point he says that British boats don't have as good fridges as Britain is colder and we drink our beer warm). He also thinks a double-bowl sink is required and in fact his whole section on the monohull galley was a revelation. He's not a fan of all lines led back to the cockpit as he thinks sometimes this makes more work (how??) but generally I found myself agreeing with most of what he said, from my very limited experience. This book enabled me to feel more confident about the stability and safety of catamarans and the one that I have chosen in particular.

Book 3 with the info on different boat models is worth a complete read-through as there are some little gem stories stuck in there, including a delivery trip through a hurricane and two gales. The pictures in this section are often rather hard to make out but even something theoretically as dull as a listing of different boat types becomes interesting when this author is writing about it.

In short, this book does exactly what it says on the tin (or on the subtitle): "How to compare, select and sail catamarans for cruising". If you're a racing cat sailor this book isn't for you but if you're the sort of sailor who wants to get from A to B in comfort, without getting drenched, without hanging on for dear life as you heel over and enjoying overtaking monohulls of the same length as yours this is a great book and I heartily recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Some good information.......2006-09-30

I was disappointed in this book after reading the other reviews. It seems like this is the best book available on cruising cats, but if so the others must be very poor.

It was more like a collection of notes. It didn't seem like it had been edited or proof read. There were sentences that didn't make sense, words omitted and spelling mistakes. The book was badly laid out with poor structure and style. All this wouldn't have mattered if the information was good. Some of it was.

Charles Kanter has a few pet hates and he laboured these points. Things like excessive beam and quarterdeck steering position. He also went on a bit about the advantages of cats over monohulls. Most people who buy this book will have already come to that conclusion. A short review of the advantages would have been sufficient. He also devoted a lot of space to brief reviews of different models, some of which are pretty rare. It might have been better if he'd done a proper review of the top 10 selling production models. He also devoted quite a lot of space to trimarans. There is a large chunk of the book devoted to the importance of having your boat professionally surveyed, which, coming from a professional suveyor, was a bit of a laboured sales pitch.

What I want from this book was more information on how to handle a catamaran, anchoring, mooring and berthing considerations, heavy weather sailing, sail trimming, down-wind sailing, how to avoid or reduce slamming, shoal water anchoring, best practice for beaching a cat etc.. There were bits of this.

So, a mixed bag. Having looked at the reviews of other books about cats it may be the best one available, which only makes me want to write a better one.

3 out of 5 stars useful information but annoying writting style.......2006-08-23

Mr. Kanter has a lot of experience with multihulls a fact that he reminds the reader every other paragraph. He also seems to feel that every paragraph must be showing that multihulls are in someway better than monohulls rather than just providing information. There is a lot of good information in this book but by the end of it I wanted to slap the author.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, very informative; but not for everyone........2006-08-05

Charles Kanter's "Cruising in Catamarans" is an excellent book that tells readers a lot about hull, deck, and interior configurations, exterior rigging options, and advice on how to sail them and park them in lousy as well as optimum conditions. His wide experience surveying and sailing catamarans of various models and sizes enables Mr. Kanter to offer informed opinions, often accompanied with photos to bolster his argument.

The book is not a primer, nor an introduction to sailing. Kanter targets experienced sailors who are considering changing from monohull boats to catamarans and want to know more - a lot more. The author does not disappoint in that regard.

Kanter's nautical lexicon exceeds that of many sailors, as well as the book's own glossary. Although amply endowed with pictures, a few more would have been helpful. For example, the photo of a chafe-prone skene bow chock is not juxtaposed to a picture of the recommended alternative roller chock - a vastly different bit of hardware. Although technology is already beginning to overtake the book's content (e.g., no mention of LED lighting), readers contemplating catamaran cruising will love this book.

An indispensible guide to plan your trip to the Sea of Abaco. Great Charts, Directions, Suggestions. You name it, it's got it. Although, I am geographically-challenged, I had no problem trolling the waters of the Sea of Abaco for a week thanks to the Abaco Guide.

I have cruised the Bahamas aboard all kinds of small boats for over 30 years, and I wouldn't go without Stephen P's books. There have been many Bahamas cruising guides written but many fall far short of the complete story.
Stephen P. has spent many years in the Bahamas. His guide info is virtually faultless. His charts are the best and amazingly accurate. This is not always the case with other guides. His stories and "local knowlege" is historic. He spends countless hundreds of hours on sight to obtain the information needed to produce a really good guide. He is an active ham radio operator so you can talk to him anytime and discuss his works.
I guess it's obvious that I love the Guide. Stephen Crow K4CPX

5 out of 5 stars How to get from Here to There (and where to stop in between).......2000-02-24

This book was one of the most important references my wife and I used on our passage from Seattle to Skagway. Not only did it give us ideas on where to go the next day, but where to hide in case the weather didn't cooperate. A must have reference for every boater cruising the Inside Passage.
