This is the big one -- 20 thick volumes packed full of information on musical history, composers, artists and more. It carries a big price tag, but it's an invaluable aid for the serious student or writer. Grove has several other dictionaries, opera and jazz among them, but if you can only handle one, this is the one to get. This text refers to the 20 Volume edition of this title.

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Nothing better...period.......2006-04-04

Despite the fact many have tried to "pretend" there are other dictionarys/encyclopedias that are better than The Groves, there simply are not. Sure, The Groves is not cheap, however, if you are looking for a quality work, it will never be cheap. So, whether you are a person with degrees in Music History, or someone who just wants to have information readily available on music/musicians, this is the only way to go.

1 out of 5 stars Don't believe that you are getting 20 books........2004-02-29

Although the announcement makes you think that maybe yo will be getting 20 books for a song, you will be singing a different tune when it arrives. You will get one (yes, 1) volume selected apparently at random. I got volume 13.

2 out of 5 stars dumbed down.......2002-05-02

Four stars for what has been carried over from the 1980 version, zero stars for what has been appended to it. We can't entirely blame the dictionary for the poor quality of most of these additions. The dictionary depends on a large pool of contributors, most of whom hold academic positions, and our academies are beset with insufficiently acknowledged problems.

One problem is the graduate-school analogue of what in secondary schools has been called "grade inflation". We might call it "degree inflation". Unqualified candidates are routinely pushed through graduate school; mediocre minds are awarded doctorates and assume faculty positions. This is partly the result of a misguided egalitarianism and partly the result of a quid-pro-quo cronyism. In any case, it is self-perpetuating and self-proliferating. It manifests itself here most obviously in rambling pseudo-intellectual essays on such empty buzzwords as "postmodernism".

Another problem is commercialization. It manifests itself here most obviously in vacuous and clumsily written (and randomly strewn with rock journalism cliches) extended accounts of various pop music figures, such as, for example, Bob Dylan and David Bowie. (Both Bob Dylan and David Bowie have composed interesting song lyrics and are worthy subjects for popular culture historians, but neither have any particular MUSICAL significance.)

5 out of 5 stars The definitive dictionary of music and musicians.......1999-09-13

One could never hope for a 'compleat' dictionary of music and musicians any more than one could hope for hope for a 'compleat'library of knowledge in one publication. But, just as the Encycopeadia Britannica has come to be seen the most comprehensive summary available of knowledge generally, so has Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians come to be seen as the ultimate summary of information available about music and musicians.

The question now is: when will 'Grove' follow the Encyclopaedia Britannica and reach out to a wider audience via CD-ROM and Internet on-line services? For this reviewer: the sooner the better

Ian Bowie

5 out of 5 stars The standard reference - deservedly.......1998-09-27

Discursive and authoritative, the one failing is the lack of convenient text search. When available on CD-ROM with that capability, it will be an ideal reference.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Country Music-- The Music of the People.......2007-07-10

Anyone who has enjoyed Country Music over the years will be thrilled with this excellent resource. I already own several large Country Music "books".They all try to do much the same thing;that being to cover the history and the people associated with this music over the years. They all cover the huge number of people involved, from the Legends to the not so famous, but had important contributions and impact on the music.
The description here is very goog, but gives only a taste of what one will find in this book.It is loaded with photographs, many I have never seen before.
It is organized by time periods ,rather than alphabetically and that results in it being a real history of the music's development. One must keep in mind that this is such a huge field of performers and songs;that it would be impossible to cover everyone and every song, even if a hundred books this size were assembled. The book is large at 12.6 X 10.5 X 1.6 inches, and weighs 5.6 pounds. Even the greatest Legends recieve only a page or so.Don't expect to find every performer and song in it.Just to show you what a big field this is,Bobby Bare, even though a huge personality is only mentioned in passing, and no details or even a photograph. The same with Doc Watson and Barbara Fairchild and The Kendalls.Sammi Smith is only mentioned for her No.1 recording of Kristofferson's "Help Me Make it Through the Night." Many books of this type have many pages dedicated to Discographies of the Artists, but that is not the case here.

The book deals with these time periods:

Early Days,Late 1800's & Early 1900's-- through the 1930's

1940's--1950's

1960's--1970's

1980's--Present

So what we get is really a detailed history of what Country Musuc is all about, what and who inluenced it,who the important performers and songwriters were, and what forms of music developed and the songs that were part of it all.
The book shows that there have been tremendous changes in the music from the early days when it grew from Irish and Scottish roots, later to build on Gospel Music, all the way through the years to what we have today.
The book clearly shows how this music was the music of the people .The people themselves were the source of the music played and what became popular. Be it Jimmie Rogers,The Carter Family,Hank Williams,Elvis Presely,Roy Acuff ,Bill Monroe etc.;this music came from them and not the publishing industry;who in most cases only jumped on the bandwagon as a business. For a long time the industry had little or no effect on what type of music and performers developed and was embraced by the performers and the fans.
Although the book does not dwell on this aspect, what we hear today does not come from the heart and soul of the people, but from what the "industry" determines it to be. In other words Country Music today, hardly resembles what it was when I became a fan of it all in the 1940's. I recall seeing Kitty Wells and Johnny and Jack perform in our local Arena when I was in High school. Then at home we were listening to Hank Snow,Hank Williams,Wilf Carter (Montana Slim),Tex Ritter and all on the radio.I had a rare experience a year or so ago when Don Helms,Hank Williams's Steel Guitar player performed at he local Legion outside Hamilton. What an afternoon;and what a reminder of what Country Music was all about---at least to me anyway.
I say "was" because I don't have the same attachment to it as I did years ago.I loved the Grand Ole Opry,in those days when all the performers were well known to every fan.In those days the performers played and wrote what they wanted to,the fans decided what they liked;but not so today. However;today the "industry" decides what and who we are going to get;and even when I do turn on the Opry,I am given music that just doesn't do it for me. Thank goodness I have a large collection of the music and performers that I collected over the years ,and that I can still listen to and enjoy. While there are a few performers around such as Marty Stewart,Kristofferson,Jones, Jackson ;but slowly and methodically the industry is replacing them with what I call "Line Dance Music". It all sounds the same to me.Real Country Music like "A Picture From Life's Other Side" ,"The First Fall of Snow"."Your Cheatin' Heart","Detroit City","Help Me Make it Through The Night","I'm Walking the Floor Over You","Four Walls","Folsom Prison Blues","An Okie From Muskokie","He Stopped Loving Her Today",Ruby","The Gambler"; "Will The Circle Be Unbroken","Amazing Grace","I Saw The Light","Seven Spanish Algles" and on and on.That was what Country music was all about;and when have we recently heard anything new that can even remotely be compared to these songs?
Even though my tastes have not changed,Country Music is still my favorite, but not the stuff coming out nowadays. Thank God I have my recordings and thanks to Richard Carlin for giving us this wonderful reminder of "Our Music". Maybe there are many who disagree with me and like the direction Country Music has taken. To those,my only wish is that it gives you the enjoyment that I got from this music we call Country.

Book Description

Singing Cowboys tells the fabled story of the men and women who shone brightly during the magical era of the singing cowboy movie star. It was an era when Western heroes sang and yodeled as well as threw punches and drew six-guns; an era where for a time nearly half the Western films churned out in Hollywood's golden age either featured a singer as a hero, or had singing second leads or singing ranch hands to provide that dreamy, romantic, exquisitely beautiful music we now think of as western.

5 out of 5 stars Singing Cowboys.......2007-08-26

A book like this has been needed for a long time. I wish that it wasn't such a brief overview, but had more depth with the characters. There were minor singing cowboys that I would like to have learned more about, but at least they were mentioned. When I picked this book up to read it, I didn't know I couldn't put it down until I had finished. The accompanying CD has good coverage, but leaves you wanting more. Good thing I have a good collection this type of music.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding, colorful history.......2007-02-03

An audio cd of music packs added punch to the review of Western cowboy music's development and colorful characters in SINGING COWBOYS, which charts a bygone era when cowboys sang, yodeled, and were active members of the real West. From the singing cowboy movie fad to the evolution of the cowboy from ranch hand to musician, the lives of some sixty 'singing cowboys' are presented in a blend of biographical sketches, photos, and music. An outstanding, colorful history, SINGING COWBOYS will interest even readers who have only a casual affection for the genre, and deserves a spot in any general or music-specific library.

4 out of 5 stars Singing Cowboys.......2007-01-04

Interesting to see all the history of the original country singers that were real cowboys. The CD adds greatly to the history, especially for those who didn't hear them originally. Wish there were more of the old songs by these artists on CD.

5 out of 5 stars SINGING COWBOYS: THE STORIES AND THE SONGS.......2006-12-16

Doug (Ranger Doug) Green has followed up on "Singing in the Saddle," his scholarly milestone in the history of the singing cowboy phenomena, with this delightful treat for the fans. If someone sang in a "B" western just once they are surely here. Incisive thumbnail essays describe the contributions of fifty personalities and five singing groups who made lasting impressions singing in the
silver screen sagebrush. An additional chapter covers working bands and pickup bands
that would provide music where needed.
One group forinstance, the very popular Beverly Hillbillies, appeared uncredited as the Radio Ranch band in "The Phantom Empire" before getting their due in Gene Autry's "The Big Show."
If the brief resumes of the stars fail to conjure memories of matinees past then the beautiful graphics, from a publisher dedicated to beautiful book production,
will knock your nostalgia into gear.
Opening the book provides a wide-screen, eye-poppin' (not a trite phrase in this case) spread of lobby cards, posters, songbook covers, stills and occasional publicity shots. My particular favorite is the full page picture of Roy Rogers sittin' on a fence and pickin' a guitar which I hadn't seen since my youth. This is an expanded, and strangely colorless version of a photograph originally shot in the studios of the New York Daily News for publication in their Sunday Coloroto Magazine.
There are a few minor glitches in the text. Dick Foran appeared with Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis in "Petrified Forest" not "Painted Desert," Tex Ritter's work on "High Noon" was in 1952, at the midpoint of his career, not 1950, and a bit of clarification in the Jane Frazee article would have helped. "Captain Blood" was a big picture in 1935 starring Errol Flynn and readers might think it is the film alluded to but it is "Captain Blueblood," (not Blue Blood) a two-reel Vitaphone short trading on the Flynn features' title. These caveats aside the book is a treasury of memories, pictorial marvels and music.
Accompanying the book is a 10 song CD starting with Patsy Montana's "I Want to be A Cowboy's Sweetheart" and ending with Rex Allen's "Too Lee Roll Um." In between you can hear Smiley Burnette's "Mama Don't Like Music," a song whose history deserves a couple of paragraphs, the classic "Blue Shadows on the Trail" by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers" and Ray Whitley's recording of "Back in the Saddle Again" made before Gene Autry put his brand on it.
All in all a great round-up of stars, scenes, and songs for the "B" western fan .

5 out of 5 stars Great book, new edition needed.......2005-11-07

This is a great biographical guide to blues musicians and their careers, but it's time for an updated edition. The book contains 600+ entries with fairly detailed bio info in each, with musicians ranging from Bessie Smith to Robert Cray, and even including crossover groups like the Yardbirds. But the book predates the CD era somewhat, with the "essential listening" section for each musician lacking in CD listings. For some, this is a major omission (I'm thinking of the 1,000 or so Document CDs that could have been accessed with so many of the pre-war musicians).

Books like this often impel people to go through them to note who was left out as well as who made it in. Some of the earlier female blues singers who recorded many important sides in the 1920s seem under represented: Viola McCoy, Josie Miles, Monette Moore, and Merlene Johnson (The Yas Yas Girl) were all left out, though each recorded dozens of sides. Of course, artists who have come on the scene since 1993, when the book was published, are not included either (Keb Mo, Jerry Ricks, and Corey Harris to name just three come to mind). No book, obviously, that is documenting an on-going subject will ever be complete, but this one is valuable enough to warrant a revised edition. Hopefully one is in the planning stages. In the meantime, this is (along with Harris's BLUES WHO'S WHO, which also needs updating) an important reference book for lovers of the blues. A must-have book.

4 out of 5 stars Definitive, but not definitive..........2000-08-02

This is a great book to have in your collection if you're a fan of blues music and history. By far, it's not the ONLY book out there. There are a number of notable artists this book is missing. Hopefully, future editions of this book will begin to fill some of the gaps. That being said, this is a very good reference just the same.

4 out of 5 stars A good referance to accompany other reading or listening........1998-08-24

The information provided in the biographical encyclopaedia is a good referance when reading other publications on the "Blues" or listening to recordings by a performer with whome you may not be familiar. Whilst the referances are not complete, it is nevertheless a source of sound information on numerous blues performers from the 1890's to the present. (I found I had a number of recordings in my collection made in the 1920's and 1930's by individuals not referenced in the book.)

The book is a very good "handbook" to have by your side when you want to learn or simply recap on some details of an individual whose story you may be absorbing either through reading or listening.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, highly recommended for any fan of the blues.......1996-05-26

I recently picked up a copy of "The Big Book of Blues" by Robert Santelli at the Delta Blues Museum bookstore in Clarksdale Mississippi. Billed as "a biographical encyclopedia with more than 600 entries covering classic blues, country and urban blues, rhythm and blues, and blues rock", the author has achieved his daunting goal of creating a definitive reference for both the uninitiated and the true blues aficionado.

Rather than a dry, vital statistics only type of approach, Robert Santelli's comprehensive reference presents a brief vignette of each artist's career and their influences, along with in depth discussion and subjective observations on their style of playing and songwriting.

The entry for Robert Johnson is a great example of the folksy storytelling style employed by the author. It tells of Johnson's illegitimate birth in 1911 and his untimely death from poisoning by a jealous husband in 1938, and covers all the significant highlights of his short career including details of the infamous "crossroads" myth.

The author also includes "essential listening" for each artist. These lists of recordings are not complete discographies as found in some references, compilation of which would take years for such a diverse group of artists whose recordings appear on the most obscure labels imaginable. Instead, the "essential listening" references cover the artist's major works and significant career milestones, and represent the best examples of the artist's style.

From world renowned performers such as B. B. King and John Lee Hooker to more obscure local club players like Cripple Clarence Lofton, the author covers a lot of ground and has done extensive research into the lives and times of nearly every artist who ever played the blues. The author's extensive knowledge and resourcefulness is clearly evident in this informative, entertaining, and well researched volume, which appears to be a true "labor of love". I highly recommend this book

Book Description

Providing fascinating profiles of musicians and bands ranging from the popular and influential Eric Clapton and Mike Bloomfield to lesser-known artists such as Bakerloo and Black Cat Bones, this collection spans a vibrant period in which blues music enjoyed a significant renaissance due largely to young white musicians who fused it with rock 'n' roll. Exhaustive searches of 1960s and 1970s rock journalism are combined with up-to-date personal interviews to create new, fuller pictures of the musicians who defined this genre, and new light is shed on the riveting dynamics that shaped and ultimately defined combustible groups such as the Yardbirds, Cream, and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Included are in-depth artist biographies, discographies, and discussions of the artists' critical and commercial impact.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More Praise...And A Minor Correction.......2004-03-01

In a previous review of this book, I mentioned some minor gaps in the discography. Actually, it was my own error, I hadn't noticed that the cut-off date for this mainly '60s-oriented work was 1972 and that releases by the artists discussed after that date were discussed fairly extensively in a "postscript" to the main entry on the group or artist.

In any event, that was only a very minor concern. As I've read more and more of this book, I've come to decide that it is an almost indespensible reference work for lovers of rock, blues and 60s music in general.

And I take issue with those who feel a bit miffed that this or that artist or group has not been included in this volume. If all goes as hoped, this book will be one of many in a series devoted to music of the 60s. The old goats at Old Goat Publishing are hard at work at follow ups, so please be a little patient. (You can check them out at www.oldgoat.com.) Many artists of the era were eclectic to the point where genre bending became their modus operadi. Creatively, that was an exciting and flat out wonderful turn of events. Critically, well, it makes classification and categorization all the harder.

Yes, Led Zeppelin had a strong blues influence, but there would be a much stronger argument for including them in a future volume on "metal" or "megastars." The focus of this work is more on those artists that you may NOT have heard of and whose work deserves attention. (No one can deny that Led Zep has not had a fair amount of ink spilled in their name.) By comparsion, the inclusion of Cream in this volume is justified, not just because Cream was significantly "rootsier" than Zep, but because (apparently) an editorial decision was made to include all of Eric Clapton's work in one volume.

And speaking of Erics, wouldn't Burden be more appropriate in an eventual "British Invasion" volume? Yeah, it's all somewhat arbitrary, but if you're familiar with any kind of criticism (literary, film, music or whatever), you know that those kinds of distinctions are absolutely necessary. There are people out there, for instance, who will tell you in no uncertain terms that "classical" music should NOT be an umbrella term for the music of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras. But sometimes that kind of critical shorthand is necessary if you're going to have any kind of discussion at all.

BLUES-ROCK EXPLOSION should help initiate discussion of the oft-neglected music to which it is devoted. There'll be plenty more to discuss with future volumes in the Old Goat series. At least this old goat hopes so.

4 out of 5 stars Passes My Litmus Test.......2004-02-16

Whenever I find a book that devotes significant ink to my all-time favorite singer (the criminally neglected Tracy Nelson--and no, I don't mean Ricky's TV actress daughter), I can't help get excited. BLUES ROCK EXPLOSION devotes several pages to Tracy and her original band, Mother Earth. And the info is all pretty much accurate, with quotes dug up from what now must be pretty obscure sources like late 1960s HIT PARADER articles. (HP used to be quite the informative little music mag back in the day--before it went heavy metal hair band crazy.) There are gaps in the discography, and that disturbed me a bit. But any coverage of this great singer in a major publication is heartening nonetheless.

Interesting though, the entry on Tracy goes on at some length about the inevitable Joplin comparisons (which were always somewhat misleading, since Tracy was more gospel influenced and much less raspy and raw than Janis--god love 'em both though). But oddly, there is no entry on Joplin herself. Hmmm. Could it be that they're going after only the rootsiest of "blues rockers" for this book, and that Janis and Big Brother will surface in some future volume (psychedelia maybe? or rock icons in general?).

Some of the reviewers below complain about this or that artist or group not being included in this otherwise fairly comprehensive reference work. I AM guessing here, but as indicated above, this appears to be the first in a series of Old Goat publications, and it is likely that when the artists overlap genres that they will be included in some other volume. Led Zeppelin may strike some as the "ultimate blues rockers" as one poster notes below. But, as mentioned, this book's focus seems to be on the rootsiest artists--and Led Zep could be being saved for the metal volume. And of course, Zep only showed up at the tail end of the 60s (which is the temporal focal point of this volume) and went on to conquer the world mainly in the 70s, so that could be another factor.

I have less of an answer for why Eric Burden and the Animals didn't make the cut, however, although Eric could slip into a psychedelia volume later on too (that just wasn't his BEST work). And maybe Hot Tuna was too much tied to the San Fran scene as well (though on their own, they were pretty darn rootsy too). Well, we'll have to see what future efforts by the Old Goats bring. In the meantime, this is welcome coverage for some pretty deserving artists, much of whose work is still available. Even though the book is a bit on the pricy side, I recommend it to any half-way serious student of the blues.

5 out of 5 stars Old Goats at Play.......2003-09-08

Old Goat Publishing Company, located in Mission Viejo, California, is a group of elite rock music writers who have come together for a common purpose: Bring the vibrant music scene of the 1960's to life in a series of books that are painstakingly researched and meticulously detailed. Blues-Rock Explosion, the first offering in this series, delivers 42 profiles of many of the seminal groups of the so-called "Blues Revival Movement of 1968." Generously assisted by recollections from many of the principals involved, Blues-Rock explosion paints a vibrant portrait of a (primarily British) scene suffused with excitement, as the musicians start by slavishly imitating the great American bluesmen like Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters, then grow by leaps and bounds to create an entirely new genre (blues-rock) that forms the basis for much of popular music's later development into hard rock and heavy metal. One could argue for inclusion of more bands, such as, say, the Animals and Led Zeppelin, but the author's decision to limit the time period covered (from roughly the mid-1960's until 1973) puts sensible boundaries around the subject, making the book's length a very manageable 300 pages instead of 900. Several future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are detailed in these portraits (the Allman Brothers, Cream, Eric Clapton, and the Yardbirds), but just as compelling are the chapters concerning artists whose careers were cut short by tragedy (the Mark Leeman Five, Jo Ann Kelly). Also, even though it is not surprising that many of the British artists played with and were influenced by each other (since England is a smallish country), it is a great pleasure to read that Chicago in the 1960's remained a vital component of the blues scene, contributing such greats as Electric Flag, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Mike Bloomfield, and Nick Gravenites. Last, and perhaps most important, Blues-Rock Explosion finally spotlights such long-neglected heavyweights as Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Canned Heat, and Ten Years After, many of whom are not only still alive in the 21st Century, but are still contributing relevant, listenable new albums to those of us who never tired of hearing the blues in its many incarnations. Good luck and continued success to the Old Goats for continuing to believe that these great artists are still worthy of our attention.

5 out of 5 stars What Rock Books Should Be.......2002-10-01

No cobbled-together overview, this is an impressive, meaty book of great integrity. Care has obviously been taken to do the research & get the facts straight. "Heavy hitters" like John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, the Butterfield Band & the Yardbirds are covered admirably in a way that is both comprehensive & concise. Lesser known artists also appear, & when reading the book one constantly encounter players who would turn up in other places, at other times. The reader feels himself in good, knowledgeable hands from the get-go. (Martin Celmin's introductory essay is worth the price of the book in & of itself.)
It's that rarest of things, a book that is both entertaining & a solid reference work as well. The A-Z approach also makes it, as my friend Chris Darrow calls it, a great "toilet book." Meaning, I hasten to clarify, a book one can dip into whenever or wherever.
It's the first in a series, & I look forward to the future volumes.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any blues rock lover.......2002-09-01

This book is fantastic! The only thing that would make it better yet, would be the addition of a few more blues artists that seem to have been left out. (The Animals, Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis,...and WHERE is Led Zeppelin!...the greatest Blues rock band ever??) It is still well worth owning, if you can still get one...lots of information, and things even an avid Blues Rock fan probably didn't know. The "Introduction" is one of the best parts, giving you virtually a complete history of how this great music evolved. Gives Blues Music the attention it has deserved for so long, and never got.

5 out of 5 stars What is it you say most?.......2007-05-17

Since life is just an illusion to reflect back at ourselves, I am glad to have the chance to ponder what Bob Marley thought and spoke most of. I agree with a lot of them, but not all. This is definately a book of "less is more". Makes me want to write "me own". Maybe he knows his name now, "51" or if he comes again "56" will we know him? "55" He's the rainbow too.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff.......2005-06-29

Personally, I enjoyed this booklet. It contains some very thought-provoking quotes from the don gargon, Bob Marley. What a way to capture these thoughts, Cedella and Gerald! Nice work entirely.

5 out of 5 stars The Prophet Among Us.......2004-12-07

After the 60s, the movement for a better world faded into the 70s, and dissappeared entirely in the 80s. At least in the USA. God and his disciples were still alive and well in Jamaica. Instead of fishermen, they were musicians. When you listen deeply, you'll hear the message clearly. Bob Marley carried the truth for our times. That torch still burns in his music and the writing that came afterward. Read 56 Thoughts. It will touch you, move you, and enlighten you. 56 Thoughts is a book you will never put down. It will go with you every where because it is pure soul from a philosopher who knew what he was talking about.

5 out of 5 stars True Bob.......2004-12-03

This book by Cedella Marley sets the record straight in one-line and short off-the-cuff wisps of light and dark, humorous and serious wisdom that Bob Marley was famous for. I read it once a day, twice a day, three times a day, as Doctor Jamaica recommends.

There are four sections to this encyclopedia: Elton A-Z, featuring explanations, details, and anecdotes related to aspects of his career and life, with entries on celebrity friends, important places, and a wide variety of other topics; Albums, giving a chrononlogical, behind-the-scenes look at his more than 35 albums up to and including 1995's Made in England; Performances, listing his concert tours year by year, highlighting major performances such as John Lennon's final stage appearance in a 1974 show, a 1979 concert in Russia, and a little-publicized 1992 tribute; and Songs, listing alphabetically more than 500 songs recorded or written by Elton John.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK OUT THERE ON ELTON JOHN.......2005-09-07

Dates,songs,eras in Elton's career;it's all here.

The author who did research on this book,Claude Bernardin, did an outstanding job.His research was relentless.

I prefer this book to many others because it is an encyclopedia type book and facts are easily found.

Alot of information on unreleased songs, which is my favorite part of the book.

I recommend this book to all Elton John enthusiasts.

It is a book you must have in your library if you are a die hard Elton John fan.

4 out of 5 stars There's A Mistake.......2004-01-05

While the book is a fun read with Elton facts in alphbetical order, this is a mistake in the book that has just bugged me for a while. The two authors, especially one of them, is known as a major Elton historian. Why then, did he make the mistake?. The error in question is this - In describing the "Honky Chateau" album, it was stated that "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat", the two singles off the album, were Elton's first top 10 singles?. Uh, sorry, but wrong. 2 years prior to this record, "Your Song" was a top 10 hit on the Billboard single charts. How can such a big historian make that mistake?.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on rocket man.......2001-06-19

Mr.Bernardin has shared his wealth of knowledge on the subject of Elton John in a clear, concise and enjoyable format. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to know the all of Elton.

4 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad.......2000-07-21

This book is okay, but not great. It isn't a biography, but rather a compilation of facts about people, events, and things in Elton's life in alphabetical order. It does however give some really good info on Elton.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and extremely useful.......2006-04-13

This well-illustrated book makes for an intriguing reference on some of the greatest American artists of the 20th century. Lots and lots of books and studies fail to join jazz and blues at all, and none do as clearly or as effortlessly as this much-needed and very worthwhile volume. It is both comprehensive and sensible. It covers a lot of ground. Though I wish it had more information on specific solos, which is where we really get a grasp of the depth of artistry here, this is the best book of its kind I have seen and I am grateful for it.

5 out of 5 stars reader-friendly illustrated jazz history and reference.......2005-11-09

The innovative user-friendly touch of the Internet links is integrated into the sections of many of the artists (i. e., not put in an appendix or resources section at the back of the main text) by graphics with a web address. Another reader-friendly touch is a graphic noting the most representative recording by a particular musician. This is especially helpful considering the long careers, many recordings, and evolving styles of many of them. Most of the photographs show the artists in performance. Blues and Jazz are taken decade by decade from the early years through the nineteen twenties down to the eighties and the contemporary era, with a closing section on the instruments and equipment going with the two long-lasting and changeable types of music. Profiles of each artist cover biographical background, music career, and the artist's influences on or contributions to the field. For historical overview, comprehensive treatment of all the leading jazz and blues performers, and primary references cited, the "Illustrated Encyclopedia..." is an ideal introduction to these interrelated fields of music.
