limited in its bio's.......2007-09-19
Though the book is imformative, the bios are very limited. There are no scales to properly determine strength and intelligence. Also there are a lot of typos, leading me to believe that they didn't care much when they created this. If you want a short overview on marvel characters then this book is for you, otherwise don't bother.
Tons of good information!.......2007-08-06
Great book for anyone. Being an avid marvel fan I thought I knew most everything, but I have learned a lot from this book. It is a good buy.
The Marvel Encyclopedia.......2007-06-11
The book is well illustrated and has exhaustive description of each character of Marvel Comic Books.
so many errors!.......2007-06-07
Like any Marvel fan I was very excited about getting my hands on this encyclopedia, only to be sorely disappointed by the amount of errors found within it's pages. Error examples include: page 46, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, an image of Nightcrawler is found under a listing for Black Tom Cassidy. Page 212 , an image of the Shiar imperial guardsman Nightside is shown under the character listing for Nightshade. Page 171 An image of the Asgardian character Lorelei is shown under the character listing for the Savage Land mutate of the same name. These are few example of the many errors throughout the book.
It's not an encyclopedia.......2007-06-06
There isn't enough information on individual characters. (There are a lot of them, and there are pictures, but the pictures take up some much space that there's none left for details.)

The History of Comics.......2007-08-14
I bought this book because I wanted a guide of comics but all the comics, marvel, dc, image, dark horse, press, etc, and this book has that.
A decent comic encyclopedia that gears mostly towards the golden age........2007-02-14
As with most of these comic book/fantasy "guides" or "encyclopedias", such a huge task is bound to end up with a few factual errors and typos. There are certainly a few of those here in this book. For instance, Ron Goulart mentions that Jim Lee helped launch X-Men, Vol. 2 in 2001 (a full ten years after it originally happened). Such a mistake would probably fall in the "typo" category, but still pretty silly nonetheless.
The author admits that he grew up reading comics during it's "golden age", and it shows as this book *mostly* focuses on the industry throughout the late 20s-50s, and seems to completely forget all but the truly major top-selling characters of the 60s onward. But this indeed the "Comic Book Encyclopedia" because all years are represented, up to about 2001, it's just that the golden age seems to be the primary focus. Reading many entries in this book, I often wondered if Goulart was simply inserting his own favorites from his childhood into the book, because many of these characters and titles I had never heard of, even though I am a fan of that era. He seems to showcase the most obscure of companies, creators, and books even for the 30s & 40s.
Also at times Goulart seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder and may make remarks in regards to how underrated or overrated an artist or writer was, going as far to call out certain artists by speaking of how poor their style is.
But don't get me wrong, this encyclopedia is a joy to read. There's a great use of artwork here in relations to characters, comic book covers, and a creator's work. Having been born in 1981, I still have great interest in all those comic book years before me and I really enjoy reading about and seeing the artwork of the books of the 30s and 40s and 50s. So as long as you're not expecting an overview covering the New Avengers, X-Men, JLA, and Batman universes exclusively and don't mind catching up on the golden age, this is a very good book to pick up for fans of comics in general.
found a few mistakes..........2006-04-18
I skimmed through this book, which I fortunately bought from SFBC instead of a book store or Amazon, and found at least three errors.
Basically, don't count on this book to be 100% factual.
Superficial but beautiful.......2005-08-29
The graphics are simply outstanding and worth the price of the book alone. The text is something else, though. It's pretty superficial for the most part, and it misses some influential artists such as Gahan Wilson, Roy Krenkel and Edward Gorey (yes, I know they weren't really comic book artists, but they're so famous and their influence so profound they should have been included). For the most part I'd say this is light, enjoyable reading, certainly nothing in depth, but again, the graphics are just simply gorgeous.
An Enjoyable Light Study of Comic Books.......2005-08-21
The Comic Book Encyclopedia is a good light reference book to have. Is it an in depth comprehensive reference manual, for the professional researcher? No. But one of this book's best features is the ability to give some direction to more focused comprehensive research. Specific targeted areas and ample availability of keywords and keyword phrases, will help immensely with an Internet search.
If you understand anything about marketing at all, you know that packaging is half the battle. This book is packaged extremely well. It has great visuals on the front and back covers. Be wary though, and accept the book for its general lighthearted nature.
There is a useable informative timeline of comic book evolution, located inside the front and back covers. But there is no table of contents, which would have been extremely helpful. The index is available, but many times a table of contents is of better use to me.
If this book is purchased from Amazon, it is a lot cheaper than running down to a local bookstore. And if you would like to learn more about comic books or want a general reference resource, I would recommend this book. If more in depth comic book knowledge is wanted, this book is also a good starting point.
As a website builder of "www.comic-book-collection-made-easy.com", it has helped me with content and direction into further research. So I have not regretted my purchase. There are better reference materials and websites available though, for the more experienced comic book connoisseur.

This is the mother of all revenge books! You'd have to buy more than 25 books to get all the wit and wisdom contained in this compilation from the best of Paladin's revenge books. Don't be fooled by cheap imitators that claim to know how to get even. Paladin is still your revenge source when you need to even the score with nosy neighbors, bungling bureaucrats, snarly clerks or other pests. For entertainment purposes only.

This book is a hoot. Please be careful....if taken seriously, you could get into a lot of trouble.

I really enjoyed this book, I think it is very clever!
Quantity not Quality.... .......2005-08-24
Revenge Encyclopedia, is full of many tips that would cost alot of money to buy in other books. However, other books take the time to explain how not to get caught.
What am I saying... This can be a dangerous book if given to the worng person, AKA someone with no common sense. However if it's quantity not quality you're looking for, these pages have about 1000 ticks and pranks. Some are so cruel I wouldn't use them on my worst enemy. I would suggest for those who want to be more careful to buy George Haydukes books as most of the pranks came from him.
PS... Printed really cheaply.... book is think and large. Not easily concealed. Bad choice for production if you want to conceal this book. It's about the size of a relatively think coloring book. The print is off center, top of the word is ahead of the bottom of the word. I don't feel it was worth the price as for quality but quantity was worth every penny. If only they were less cheap and printed it in a more well rounded way...
Very Practical........1998-06-12
This may be the mother of revenge books. You would have to buy and read more than 25 books to get the wisdom and wit contained in this volume. You'll like it!

The fifth title in the National Lampoon classic library, The National Lampoon Encyclopedia of Humor returns with the madness that only Michael O’Donoghue, P.J. O’Rourke, Terry Southern, Anne Beatts, Doug Kenney and Brian McConnachie could have possibly created.
Includes a pullout, 4-color, National Lampoon World Map and artwork from Edward Gorey, Bruce McCall and Rick Meyerwitz
Customer Reviews:
Thank goodness they cut down trees for this!.......2005-08-29
At last a timely reprint (though not quite of the highest quality) of this brilliant 1973 Lampoon special. The original was a hardback book and the contents (not reprinted from the magazine) ran in alphabetical order from Aa, Antique plastics to Zz, Zen lizard. You don't need me to tell you that this is seriously funny stuff, beautifully written under the editorship of Michael O'Donoghue and stunningly designed by David Kaestle.
Some of the goodies I've enjoyed include ten pages of 'Battling Buses of World War II', six pages of the comic 'Deco Desperados', designed in the Art Deco/Moderne style (in my 1973 edition this has a fifth color of silver ink as an extra graphic element) an eight page 'The Name-On-Request Correspondence School of Home Study's Official 747 'Big Rig' Pilot's Training Course in Aviation', which includes an official diploma 'suitable for framing', six pages of a very wicked parody of the famous 'Family of Man' photo book, eleven page comic 'Cowgirls of War', drawn by Russ Heath in his best bondage style and plenty more articles, fiction, cartoons and comics.
Between all these feature pages there are contributions from all the Lampoon regulars who made the magazine the hippest pages around in the Seventies and Eighties.
Book Description
This collection of sports-related uniforms - applicable to all fields of art including manga, book illustration, and animation - is full of sexy offshoot costumes such as race-queen and cheerleader uniforms. Featuring more than 3,000 images, this volume presents sports uniforms from a wide range of angles. To boot, the end of the book also includes a discussion of basic uniform structure and design.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome!.......2007-04-22
This book is full of great tips. It has hundreds of various poses and positions that can defintely help in the long run. It shows the creases in certain skirts and tops and also covers swimsuits, such as one and two-pieces. It even shows the styles from way back in ancient times with the Eqyptians and their swimsuits!
It is a great reference book for poses. There are not step-by-step instructions, but it is definetly worth the time and money. It's a definte keep on my How To Draw shelf.
A good book.......2006-11-28
Trust me when I say, some of the titles can be very misleading. Fortunately, this book was not misleading at all. This book has what the title suggests, sport wear. In the book, it shows you a variety of sport wear that characters wear in their active lifestyles. Not only does it have sporty wear, but they also managed to sneak in some fantasy style clothing as well as cheerleading outfits in there as well. This book has a good bit of poses that would be very useful, and it shows how the body would look in certain outfits. If you are looking for a book that helps you come up with some cute and sporty ideas for a sport genre manga then this is definately a must buy! Also, there is very, I mean very little nudity in this book, so I would also recommend this book for those who are offended by nudity.
Lousy name, but inspiring designs.......2005-09-30
I was a little skeptical when I first saw the cover of this book, not to mention the title of this book. I think they titled it that so men would be drawn to it and buy it. But I must say this book is actually pretty good. It has some really creative ideas when it comes to fashion designs. You can also use the ideas to not only make sports wear, but anything your imagination can come up with. You could design simple bathing suits to active sports wear to even a hero's outfit or even yet a cool space suit. With this book you can even design a fashion that best suites a unique characters personality, that could have nothing to do with sports, the book is fantastically inspiring.
The only down fall is its awfully weak when it comes to men's. Not that very many men will have sexy sports wear, but neither the first or second Costume Encyclopedias have much of anything for the men. The whole How To Draw Manga series kind of left in the dark when it comes to men. They have one book for Male Characters and five for Female Characters.
Yet, this book is worth buying. But if you don't have the first Costume Encyclopedia, get that one first and skip over the second one.
Book Description
Jewish humor mirrors the minds and hearts of the Jewish people. It reflects their joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments. Perhaps most significant, it demonstrates their willingness to poke fun at themselves, which has no doubt enabled Jews to endure centuries of hardship with head held high and a smile on their collective face.
In the Encyclopedia of Jewish Humor, hailed as a landmark work when first published, Henry D. Spalding presents delightful anecdotes, quips, jokes, and yarns featuring the colorful folk who have added spice and spirit to Jewish life from biblical to modern times. Some of the selections are pungent, many are scornful of deceit and pretense, others are alive with brotherhood. Most are just downright hilarious.
In thirty-nine chapters, Spalding allows forty centuries of Jewish life to speak through characters we have all grown to love. Here, you'll find the itinerant shnorrer who arrives in a small Lithuanian town late one Friday afternoon with no place to stay; the Yiddishe papa whose task it is to instruct little Mortie in the ways of the birds and bees; the congregant whose life's goal, it seems, is to make his rabbi miserable; the hypochondriac who complains of ailments as yet undiscovered. The author (re)introduces us to the shlemiels and shlimazls, rebbes and rebbetzins, mamas and papas, doctors and patients, marriage brokers and divorce lawyers, yeshiva students and sisterhood presidents whose peculiar antics never fail to entertain.
In the preface to this classic work, Henry Spalding writes that the surest way to destroy humor is to analyze it. So no more analyzing...Now it's time to read a little something!
Customer Reviews:
The classic work on Jewish humor.......2007-02-18
This is the definitve work on all of the old Jewish stories and/or jokes which your parents knew. A must have
Encyclpedia of jewish humour.......2006-02-25
In my opinion this book should be on the shelves of every Jewish family ,not just for display but as a study and reference ,
Informative, but not funny.......2006-02-23
There is much to learn about Jewish slang and the structure of Jewish humor in this collection, but the author has a knack for taking funny material and making it sound stupid. Let me give an example by relating one of my favorite Jewish jokes, in my own words.
Hymie and Sophie owned a little convenience store in a nice Jewish neighborhood, and they made a nice living. However, the neighborhood began to change, the Jews moving to the suburbs and a wave of Catholic immigrants replaced them, working in the growing factories around the city. Their business fell to almost nothing. One day Hymie says to Sophie [please add Yiddish accent here and throughout], "you know, if we were Catholics, we would get our business back." So the next day the couple went to the local Catholic church and professed their desire to become Catholics. Father O'Reilly was suspicious and put the pair through months of study and service, but the couple pulled through with honors. On the Sunday they were to be baptized, the whole Catholic community attended, each in his or her best attire. Hymie and Sophie looked radiant. They knelt before the alter, ate the wafer, and the good Father O'Reilly blessed them. Three times to each he said, "you're a Catholic," sprinkling the water on them. There followed a great feast and celebration.
Well, business did pick up. The couple were doing so well that one day Hymie said, "You know, Sophie [add Yiddish accent] we must invite the priest to dinner." Father O'Reilly accepted with pleasure, and showed up Friday evening for dinner. The had some wine and hors d'oeuvres, and Sophie came out of the kitchen with the steaming piece de resistance: a magnificent pot roast. Father O'Reilly was horrified. "After all your studies, you don't remember that you must eat fish on Friday!" Sophie, mortified, quickly regained her composure. Taking some water from the pitcher, she stood over the pot roast, intoning "You're a fish, you're a fish, you're a fish" while sprinkling the steaming dish.
Now, that is a funny joke! Forever after, when you want to say that you can't change the leopard's spots in Jewish, you just say "You're a fish."
What is the joke like in the book? It occurs on page 61. I won't repeat the whole joke, but only the last three paragraphs. "This is disgraceful!" cried the indignant priest. "Didn't you promise to abstain from eating meat on Friday?" "Meat? Who's eating meat?" answered the other blandly. "This is gefilteh fish." "You must take me for a fool!" snapped the outraged priest. "How can anyone make fish out of meat?" "The same way you made a Catholic out of a Jew," answered the convert smoothly. "I sprinkled water on it!."
Isn't that just awful? Lots of adverbs and adjectives ("indignant" "outraged" "smoothly"...) but no subtlety. I invite someone to take these joke and restore their humor.
By the way, if you liked my version of the joke, someday I'll tell you "I Could Have Saved Mama". Now that's a funny joke.

Book Description
What do Neil Diamond, Touched by an Angel, Pamela Anderson, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, White Castle hamburgers, Benny Hill, Thomas Kinkade, and the song "You Light Up My Life" have in common? They're all guilty pleasures -- and they're all celebrated in this massive A-to-Z encyclopedia.
Authors Sam Stall, Lou Harry, and Julia Spalding have unearthed fascinating trivia about literature (Valley of the Dolls, The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue), television (The Real World, Land of the Lost), fashion (Members Only jackets, the WonderBra), and more. Every page features a sophisticated two-column design and handy guide words for quick at-a-glance reference. Best of all, we've illustrated 100 of the guiltiest pleasures with the same portrait style used by the Wall Street Journal.
Complete with 1,001 entries, it's the ultimate guide to everything you hate to love!
Customer Reviews:
Actually VERY Good.......2007-01-27
Well-written, well-selected, and often very funny. The entries do a good job pinpointing the appeal of their respective cultural oddities, and the array is pretty dazzling. Heavily weighted toward the generation that came of age in the eighties, but hey, where else can you go for so much guilt in one place? Our colleges should consider giving it to foreign graduate students on their way through customs--it's a guide to all that's 'essentially useless', the hidden flotsam and jetsam of our culture.
I got this as an 'extra' gift from a friend, and expected to find it moderately amusing, something to thumb through. Surprise: My partner and I were so impressed with the book that we both wound-up reading through the entire thing.
Afterthought ends up being great purchase!.......2006-06-30
I bought this book simply to bring my purchase up to the free shipping total, but it ended up being a great purchase! It's a hilarious look at all those guilty pleasures we all harbor. Don't pass up this little gem of a book. You'll be laughing for hours! It's illustrated, too.
This book is itself a guilty pleasure.......2006-04-10
What's not to like? Three hundred pages of your favorite trash, elevated to nostalgia, handily packaged, and punchily, pithily, wittily written. Makes a great gift! (see "Infomercials")
From ABBA and Abbott & Costello to Ziggy and Zima.......2006-01-29
Please! _Doctor Who_, a "guilty pleasure"?! Or anime, which is a genuine art form? And I'm very good at "Trivial Pursuit" -- most reference librarians are. It's also obviously a generational thing; my mother was a Liberace fan in the `50s, and I loved Jiffy Pop in the pre-microwave days myself. (I was already too old when MTV debuted in 1981, or for paintball, which appeared that same year.) And is there anyone who *doesn't* have a few souvenir T-shirts in the closet? On the other hand, who's gonna admit to deliberately watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons? Or _Leave It to Beaver_ reruns, or _The Gong Show_? Or to drinking Big Red? This is the perfect book for a long road trip, for reading aloud to each other and starting arguments. There are some odd omissions, though: How can you talk about "End-of-the-World Movies" without mentioning _On the Beach_? Or "Elvis Impersonators" without noting Andy Kaufman's eerily accurate version early in his career? Or, for the ultimate in self-reference, why isn't there a listing under "Trivia Books"?
meandering through silly memories.......2005-06-14
I loved this book, particularly the illustrations which I have found out were actually done by the creator of the wall street journal portait hedcut, Kevin Sprouls. I have admired his work for years and was delighted to find him working in a less serious venue. The book's descriptions were bright, sharp and quick. It was an ironic pairing with Sprouls' serious style and made for a more humorous mix.
buy it.
Customer Reviews:
Browser's paradise.......2002-03-27
Despite not being a large book, this paperback makes a great "coffee table" book in the sense that it is great to leave laying around to have guests browse through. Flipping it open, one finds such important questions as: who's the best baseball player? which art museum is best? addressed. These are all questions that people have idled away time answering; the value Poundstone adds is having researched them. He provides just enough information--even on topics for which I don't have much expertise I found his commentary interesting. Even for those who don't care about the details the book is worth flipping through to see the comparative charts and conclusions.
Some of his choices of important questions to answer seem a bit odd (what's the most difficult shot in billiards) but even these result in a brief, interesting chapter devoted to some topic I'd never previously pondered.
